The Tortola cruise port in the British Virgin Islands is known for Cane Garden Bay Beach, Dolphin Discovery and the Baths at Virgin Gorda.

The British Virgin Islands in the heart of the eastern Caribbean are an equally popular destination for cruise lines and overnight visitors.

Historic sites in Road Town include Britannic Hall, Her Majesty’s Prison, Old Government House, Sir Olva Georges Plaza and Virgin Islands Folk Museum.

J.R. O’Neil is a 3-acre park in the middle of Road Town. Mount Healthy features the remains of a thickly walled stone windmill that used to be part of an 18th century sugar plantation. Sage Mountain is the highest point in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands at 1,719 feet and offers expansive views of the area. Shark Bay is a nature preserve and the territory’s first coastal park.

Forts Burt and Recovery are near Road Town. Burt was originally built on a hill overlooking the harbor to defend the town. The foundations and magazines remain of this historic ruin rebuilt in 1776. The site is free and open daily. It is a two-mile walk or drive southwest of town.

Fort Recovery was built in the 1640s as a military gun post. The ruins are intact and are the oldest historical landmark in Tortola. It is a five-mile drive southwest of Road Town.   The parks on Tortola include J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens, Mount Healthy, Sage Mountain and Shark Bay.

One of the most popular excursions in Tortola is the Dolphin Discovery Swim. This interactive dolphin program gives children and adults alike the opportunity to kiss, hug, and swim with a dolphin.

Starting prices for Dolphin Discovery excursions are $100 to $150 per person, depending on the program, with discounts for children.

Several excursions offer sightseeing trips around the island that may include a beach stop. These excursions cost about $50 per person.

Although touring Tortola itself is a popular activity for cruise visitors, the country’s 21 national parks are a big draw for anyone who likes beaches, hiking, tropical forests, bird sanctuaries and shipwrecks.

Beaches Near the Port

Tortola has several major beaches near the cruise port , although they require transportation to reach them.

The most popular beach that is often called one of the best beaches in the Caribbean is Cane Garden Bay. It is a 25-minute drive from Road Town on the east side of Tortola near Callwood Rum Distillery.

This sheltered and curved bay is popular with boaters because it lacks heavy winds. It also attracts swimmers, windsurfers and local residents. Because of its popularity, it also has a number of bars and restaurants.

Shore excursions that go to Cane Garden Bay cost about $50 per person including transportation. Posted taxi rates show one way is $24 per person, $12 each for two people and $8 each for three or more people. Rates are subject to change at any time. Always ask for rates before getting into the cab.

Nearby and to the northeast of Cane Garden Bay is Brewer’s Bay Beach. It is known for the ruins of old plantations and distilleries and for snorkeling among the reefs.

Some cruise lines and excursion operators offer a 30-minute trip to Long Bay Beach at Beef Island.

Shopping and Restaurants

The Road Town cruise terminal has a complex of shops and restaurants. But Main Street is the place to go for the biggest concentration of shopping and dining.

Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda

Jost Van Dyke is easy to reach from Tortola by ferry. The island is home to beautiful beaches and some of the most popular and unique bars in the British Virgin Islands.

The Soggy Dollar, a famous swim up bar and legendary creator of the Painkiller, is located on White Bay.

Virgin Gorda is the second largest of the British Virgin Islands and popular for cruisers because it is far less crowded than Tortola.

From Tortola, cruise lines often offer a shuttle to Virgin Gorda.

The Baths are a must-see in Virgin Gorda. Visitors can climb and swim through the giant boulders scattered along the bay by an ancient volcano eruption.

Getting Around

Weather is slightly cooler than the nearby St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, which lie a bit to the southwest.

Average high temperatures are in the low to mid 80s Fahrenheit during the winter and nearly 90 during the summer.

The driest months are January through March with less than two inches of rain per month. December and April through July are a little more wet. The rainy season arrives in August and reaches a high point from September through November.

The best times to visit Tortola are March and April are for a combination of warm temperatures and low risk of rain. March and December are the most popular months for tourists to visit.

Good To Know

The climate on Tortola is tropical and hot throughout the year. May to October are the hotter months with an average of 82°F.  From December to March, the temperatures range from 75°F to 77°F and tend to be more pleasant. January to April are relatively dry and May to December sees the most precipitation. The sea is warm enough to swim all year round and the sun shines pretty much every day.

U.S. currency is used in the British Virgin Islands. There are ATMs in Tortola Pier Park.

Wireless Internet:

There is WiFi at most of the venues at the Tortola Pier Park.

The language is British English, and there is also a local dialect. Spanish is also spoken by some of the islanders.

Where You Dock in Tortola – British Virgin Islands

Cruise ships dock at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park in Road Town. The pier can handle two ships at a time. Built in a colonial style, the cruise and shopping center is located in Road Town.

This outdoor shopping mall has over 70 retail outlets, restaurants, and service centers, with shops open from 9am-6pm and restaurants open from 7am to midnight.

Wi-Fi, ATMs and washrooms are available here as well as car rentals.

Tortola Pier Park is quite wheelchair accessible with flat sidewalks and curb cut-outs, but sidewalks made up of interlocking brick or stone could make for a bumpier ride.

  Water Ferries

Going between islands is done by water ferries. They operate on a schedule, and information can be found in the Pier Park. You can catch a ferry at Road Town, Soper’s Hole and Beef Island. To get to Soper’s Hole or Beef Island, you will need a cab.

There are taxi stands at the Pier Park, Soper’s Hole or Wickham’s Cay. Safari cabs and mini vans are the typical mode of taxis. Avoid a safari cab if you are nervous on steep, winding roads, as there are so many of them on Tortola.

  Rental Cars

If you choose to rent a car in Tortola, you will need to purchase a British Virgin Islands temporary license. You will need a vaild driver’s license to do so, and the BVI license is about $10. It is good for no more than three months. You do not have to take a written or road skills test but do remember that driving is on the left side of the road in BVI.

The roads on Tortola can be bumpy, and a bit treacherous. There are steep roads into the mountains and blind turns, along with the usual potholes. The occasional cow, goat or chicken will also share the roadway with you.

Shopping In Tortola – British Virgin Islands

When in Tortola, there are a few things that you might want to look for:

  Spices: Tortola is known for the wonderful spices that it produces. Because of the climate, growing spices has been a major source of trade for the island.

Local Rum: Most islands in the Caribbean make their own rum and Tortola is no exception.

Pottery: Local artists create one-of-a-kind pottery in Tortola. It is nice to know that the pottery here is made on the Island, not imported for tourists.

Jams and Jellies: These condiments are made from the fruits grown on the island and are something you won’t find in the grocery store at home.

Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park , where cruise ships dock, is an outdoor mall which has shopping, dining and entertainment, for locals and vistors alike.

The 80,000 square foot sprawling complex is framed by the picturesque harbor, where luxury yachts and cruise ships frequently dock. This enhanced cruise pier features 11 buildings, 18 kiosks and is home to over 70 retail outlets, restaurants, and service centers.

Located in Trellis Bay on Beef Island, beside the airport, this studio showcases some of the most talented artisans on the island. They have copper sculptures, island prints, pottery and jewelry.

Sunny Caribee Spice Co

In Road Town on Main Street, the building that Sunny’s occupies was once the first hotel on Tortola. Here you will find Caribbean spices, teas, condiments, and handicrafts. They also have a selection of cosmetics, bath gels, perfumes, and sunscreens.

Pusser’s Company Store

Located a 10 minute walk from the dock,  Pusser’s Company Store offers gourmet food items like meat, spices and fish along with Pusser’s Rum, one of their best selling items. A must try at their onsite restaurant is the “Painkiller” – a drink made with their own rum, pineapple juice, cream of coconut and orange juice. Sounds like the tropics in a glass! In addition to  they offer nautical and tropical clothing, mugs and bags.

British Virgin Islands Post Office

If you, or someone you know, is into collecting stamps, philatelists from all over the world value the stamps from the BVI. The British Virgin Island post office on Main Street in Road Town sees many international visitors come to purchase the stamps with unusual and beautiful designs. While most philatelists don’t use the stamps they collect on pieces of mail, know that although the stamps carry U.S. monetary designations, they can only be used in the BVI.

Dining In Tortola – British Virgin Islands

One of the favorite dishes in Tortola is fungi. Similar to polenta, fungi is made with cornmeal and okra. Another favorite is roti, which is a flatbread that is deep fried. It can also be stuffed with lentils, curry or vegetables.

If you are looking to grab a bite to eat near the dock, you will have about 16 different choices in the Tortola Pier Park.

Located about a 10 minute walk from the cruise pier, this will be your spot for fine dining on Tortola. They serve contemporary international haute cuisine, craft cocktails and fine wines. Upstairs at The Dove is the Dragonfly Lounge where you can enjoy a cocktail in a stylish old-world environment.

Brandywine Estate Restaurant

Enjoy superb Mediterranean cuisine while enjoying beautiful beach views of Brandywine Bay. Located off the beaten path, 7.5 kms east of the cruise port, you will find tapas and bistro options for a leisurely lunch, or mains such as filet mignon or seafood for dinner. Menus change often, with daily specials, and is open Wednesday through Sunday.

D’CoalPot BVI Restaurant Bar & Grill

Located about a 20 minute drive from the cruise port, on the north-west shore of the island, fresh fish, lobster and conch along with Caribbean spiced dishes will give you plenty to choose from. You will find the popular roti and jerk pork along with key lime pie for dessert. It’s best to call ahead to make sure they’re open as their hours can vary.

Things To Do in Tortola – British Virgin Islands

In the center of Road Town, this botanical garden has collections from the different habitats on the British Virgin Islands. There are exotic species from the rainforest type environments on the mountains, coastal environments, the dry forest and an extensive collection of palms.  A gazebo of orchids and a nursery for endangered species of flora are within this three acre park.

Sage Mountain National Park

The highest point on Tortola, Sage Mountain stands at 1,716 feet. While a trip here is probably not on anyone’s bucket list, it is a good way to spend a pleasant afternoon. There are about 12 looped, winding trails and excellent views of some of the other islands. Plan on spending about two hours and wear sturdy shoes along with sunscreen.

While many people associate B.V.I with beaches, there aren’t any within walking distance of the cruise terminal. Most are located along the north shore and are about a 20 minute drive from the cruise terminal.

Cane Garden Bay Beach is on Tortola’s north shore, and it is about 20 minutes from the pier in Road Town. This is a popular beach for families because of the clear and calm waters. There are areas where you can rent chairs, umbrellas, stand up paddleboards, kayaks and jet skis. The sands are pure white and beautiful. There are also spots for food and beverage at this beach.

Apple Bay is a favorite for surfers, especially in January and February. This small beach can get crowded if the surf is good.

Cruising to Tortola, BVI

The port of Tortola offers cruisers a variety of things to do that begin just a few steps from the cruise ship and extend to the North Shores of the island. If you plan to stay close to the ship, there are a variety of shops, restaurants, and attractions that you can easily walk to. If exploring the island on your own is your thing, renting a car or jeep is the best way to get around; although you should be aware that they do drive on the ‘wrong’ side of the road in the BVIs. Many rental companies will meet you at the pier if you plan ahead. If you’d like to visit a specific destination on Tortola but aren’t into driving, no worries, taxis are plentiful in Road Town and can take you wherever you want to go. Also be sure to check with your cruise ship for featured excursions that take you on Tortola adventures.

Tortola’s Best Beaches 

Beach lovers looking to relax on some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean have come to the right island. Tortola has many amazing beaches to enjoy, depending on your interests. If you want to try your hand at surfing, or just watch the locals catch a wave, hail a taxi to Josiah’s Bay where the waves are the best.   Those looking for calm waters and beautiful views with private beaches can relax and enjoy Brewers Bay for a great day of snorkeling. Cane Garden Bay is a popular beach and offers fun restaurants, calm waters, and eclectic shops, but it does tend to get a bit crowded, so be prepared to share the sandy shores.

There are plenty of shopping opportunities available for visitors cruising to Tortola. Tortola Pier Park are just steps from your ship and offer a variety of shops and restaurants. Outer towns and beaches also offer opportunities for souvenirs and island gifts. Tortola is known for its unique variety of spices, so this is a popular purchase with many cruisers. In addition, great deals are to be had on fine jewelry and gemstones, as well as duty free alcohol and electronics. Port Tortola Island BVI cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Tortola Island BVI, Road Town, UK Virgin Islands. Tortola Island's cruise port Road Town is located on Baughers Bay. The island is part of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) - a British overseas territory in the Caribbean, located to the east of Puerto Rico (USA) . The other islands of the Virgin Islands archipelago constitute US Virgin Islands (USVI / aka American Virgin Islands) and the Spanish Virgin Islands ( Culebra and Vieques , both located to the east of Puerto Rico). The archipelago is part of the Leeward Islands (Lesser Antilles). Road Town is located approx 22 mi (35 km) from Charlotte Amalie (St Thomas USVI) .

Tortola Island was named by Christopher Columbus (Italian explorer and colonizer, 1451-1506). The name means "land of the turtle dove”. Tortola BVI attracts cruise tourists with amazing beaches and the fact that Road Town is not so “commercialized” like most of Caribbean cruise ports. The island's official language is English.

On April 29, 2015, was officially opened the expanded Tortola cruise pier. The revamped facility was renovated, widened and lengthened to accommodate larger vessels. The opening ceremony was attended by BVI Government officials and cruise industry representatives. During the event was announced that NCL Norwegian and Disney ships would be bringing around 425,000 cruise tourists to Totrola Island per year, or a 21% increase over 2015.

The new cruise ship facility in Road Town was first used by the NCL ship Norwegian Getaway (berthing here on April 29 / on the pier's opening day). During the Pier's construction works, many cruise ships had to anchor and ferry their passengers via tender boats, which made the port less attractive for travelers. The exclusive agreement with NCL and Disney also caused other cruise lines (including Carnival ) to drop Port Road Town from their Caribbean itineraries leaving roundtrip from the USA.

In 2023, BVIPA (British Virgin Islands Ports Authority) announced a record year with a total of 720392 cruise tourists, or 3% increase over the previous record year 2016 (699105 cruisers). In 2023, In 2023, BVI handled a total of 354 cruise ship calls, of which 232x at Tortola Cruise Ship Pier and the remaining 122x were ships handled at anchorage sites across the BVI (9x at Road Harbour/Tortola, 56x off Jost Van Dyke Island , 38x off Virgin Gorda Island , and 19x other).

Smaller-sized luxury ships and superyachts often use for berthing or tendering the Soper's Hole Marina (West Edn Tortola).

Road Town Cruise Pier (Tortola BVI)

Until 2015, Road Town port didn't have dedicated cruise terminal building.

With the new pier, Tortola cruise port has berthing capacity of two large-sized vessels at a time. If there are more than 2 vessels, one of them anchors in the bay and its passengers are tendered ashore to the Road Town Jetty. It is closer to downtown than the cruise pier.

Before the new pier project, at the end of the cruise pier was located a shelter where passengers were gathered before shore excursions/tours. The new termonal has a dedicated parking area. Local taxi service includes minivans and safari cabs. There is a taxi rank at the pier (close to Wickham's Cay or Soper's Hole).

A BVI license is needed for car rentals. The license is easily obtainable with a valid US driver’s license and costs USD 10. Be aware to drive on the road's left side!

Tourists willing to visit other British Virgin Islands from Tortola, there is a regularly scheduled ferry service. The island has two ferry terminals – at the west end (Soper's Hole) and at the east end (Beef Island). Regular ferry services are offered between Tortola and Cruz Bay (St John Island USVI) .

Tortola Pier Park

The cruise port development project resulted in building a new cruise terminal building.

In 2014 started the construction works on the port's new cruise ship dedicated complex "Tortola Pier Park". The new docking pier was completed by December 2014. Its construction included a total of 123 piles that were driven into the seabed to support the above structure (retail buildings).

The expanded cruise pier has total length 1039 ft (317 m) and width 60 ft (18 m). Additional 273 ft (83 m) docking space is provided by mooring dolphins, giving a total berthing space 1312 ft (400 m). The pier's capacity is 2 ships at a time (each vessel up to 180,000 GT tons).

Dredging started in November. It was required to lower the seabed to 37,5 ft (11,5 m) allowing such max draft for docking cruise vessels. The project's scheduled completion of the pier was April 2015, with the entire "Tortola Pier Park" complex to be inaugurated in summer 2015.

The "Tortola Pier Park" building cost is around USD 75 million. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) and Disney Cruise Line were the projects main investors. Of the whole budget, USD 25 million was for the new pier and new excursion docks, Another USD 25 million were for the waterfront land development (area adjacent to the cruise pier). The BVI Government leased the land for a period of 48 years (with buy-out option at 15 and 30 years). The Tortola Pier Park design was developed by the US company IDEA (Orlando FL-based). This is a leading cruise port designer company that specializes in marine and waterfront port developments.

A separate concrete slab was built to support the flagship restaurant (part of Pier Park). The entire park includes 17 buildings, among which the cruise terminal, passenger welcome center, 2 restaurants, 1 pier bar, 1 shopping market, 1 chapel, 1 boat museum, 18 tourist kiosks.  The park's 2 main buildings are sized each approx 8000 ft2 (750 m2).

The construction plan was to transform Road Town's waterfront into a marketplace with festive events and tourist attractions. The waterfront development included building a new shopping village (with trolly cars for cruise passengers to explore it) plus a Ferris Wheel.

On February 16, 2016, was inaugurated Tortola Pier Park. Prior to its construction, British Virgin Islands received around 370,000 cruise passengers annually. For the 1 year period since the park's opening, BVI received almost 700,000 passengers. The new terminal's statistics for that period showed 11 maiden ship calls.

For the summer 2017, Tortola Pier Park planned special cruise terminal events, featuring live concerts and fun family activities.

Bomba’s Surfside Shack: located in Cappoon’s Bay. It is interesting palce to visit famous with its mushroom tea, Bomba Punch and logos saying “Girls with big boops: give Bomba a hug” and “Get naked for Bomba”. The decoration features bras and panties.

Scuba Diving: the best area is north from Tortola cruise port. You can easily access the place (Smuggler’s cove) walking. There is a vendor where you can rent all the equipment.

Willie T’s Floating Bar&Restaurant: the original wooden restaurant sank in 1995. This is the second one dating from 1996. You can enjoy nice cuisine and great party onboard. The restaurant leaves the Nanny Cay Marina at 5PM and returns usually at 11PM.

Included on many eastern Caribbean cruises, Tortola offers plenty of cruise port excursions to choose. From beautiful beaches and mountain drives to shopping or sipping rum, there’s something for everyone. 

Here are our recommendations for cruise excursions on your day in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

Take a Shore Excursion to Tortola Beaches

If you’re looking for the perfect tropical beach, many cruise ship excursions head to the north side of Tortola for some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Laid-back and picturesque, these soft sand beaches offer swimming, snorkeling and in winter, surfing.

Apple Bay is located on the north-western end of Tortola. It’s a great beach for surfing or boogie boarding especially in the winter months. 

Cane Garden Bay isn’t a secluded hideaway but it’s not to be missed, either. Nestled against a lush green hillside, the sand is like sugar and the water, calm. It’s also close to the port so you could find other cruise passengers enjoying the beach and the few restaurants and bars.

Brewers Bay beckons you to its hidden shores on the north side of the island. Accessible by taxi or car, it’s a haven for locals and those looking for something off the beaten path. Not filled with tourist-y restaurants, you may want to bring water and a snack.

Taste the Local Food in Tortola

Cultures come together in the BVI to create a flavorful mélange of Caribbean cuisine . Tortola food tours are fun shore excursions. Locals love their roti, a flatbread stuffed with barbecued meat and folded like a burrito.

Fragrant spices include curry, allspice and hot peppers and they are used in abundance. Feel daring? Try curried goat meat soup (tastes like chicken of course).

Fresh seafood and just-caught fish plus colorful tropical fruits round out the culinary experience. Close to the port, the main thoroughfare in Road Town, Main Street, is dotted with lively restaurants, cafés and open-air bars.

Stop in for lunch and try a fresh fruit rum punch, one of the most popular (and potent!) drinks on the island.

Go Shopping in Tortola

St. Thomas this isn’t. And for sure not St. John’s, USVI . And you’re in the British Virgin Islands not the US Virgin Islands. Prices will be a bit higher here. 

Tortola is smaller and less touristy but there’s wonderful shopping that’s walking distance to the port. You’ll find most of the shops along and just off of Main Street, which parallels the waterfront. Wander the little side streets and you’ll find art galleries, spice stores and of course tropical clothing boutiques.

If you like to cook, be sure to take home some local spices and a Caribbean cookbook. Several stores sell only spices, hot pepper sauces and condiments. Where are these shops? Your nose will lead you there, once you’re in the vicinity. (Hint: Sunny Caribee is one of the popular spice stores.)

Wickhams Cay: Near to the marina and not far from where the tender will dock, this new waterfront development has yet more stores to burn up your cash or credit card.

Crafts Alive Village: This “village” recently opened at the lower end of Road Town to replace the tent vendors. Rows of brightly-colored tiny “houses” with gingerbread trim (sort of like enclosed kiosks), comprise this new shopping area. Here you’ll find unique and beautiful arts and crafts, handmade in the British Virgin Islands.

Chances are your ship will offer shore tours for those who just want to shop for souvenirs, too.

Historic Sights in Tortola

Sage Mountain National Park: This first National Park in the British Virgin Islands was established in 1964 to preserve and regrow what was lost through decades of deforestation. Sage Mountain, at a stunning 1,716 feet, is the highest point in all of the Virgin Islands.

On a clear day, there’s a breathtaking view of neighboring islands including St. Croix. A dozen trails begin at the parking lot for the hike to the summit and through the park. The easiest way for this excursion is to hire a taxi from Road Town or rent a car to reach the park, located in the center of the island.

Old Government House Museum: Located in Road Town, this historic building is just a short walk from where your ship’s tender will dock. Originally the Governor’s residence from1880 until 1996, you’ll find an interesting display of British memorabilia, maritime antiques and original furniture. A nice detour when strolling along Waterfront Drive.

Virgin Islands Folk Museum: From the dock, head towards downtown Road Town along Main Street. Moved to its historic second location in 1993, the museum is located in the Penn House built in 1911. The West Indies-style house is a showcase for artifacts dating from over two thousand years ago, belonging to the Amerindians, the first known inhabitants. Old photographs, pottery and carvings highlight life on this island and surrounding area.

More Cruise Excursions in Tortola on Your Own

On an eastern Caribbean cruise, there’s always a nearby island to visit. From Tortola, take a ferry boat across the bay to Virgin Gorda, also in the British Virgin Islands.

Visit the mysterious Baths formed by giant boulders that seem to have dropped from the sky. Explore winding caves, snake your way through narrow passageways and take a dip in one of the hidden, crystal-clear pools.

After wandering through the caves, head up the stone stairs to the souvenir store before returning to your ship. Available by cruise excursion or on your own.

If you’ve always wanted to play with Flipper, Tortola has a cruise excursion over to Dolphin Discovery and just jump into the water. Watch as the trainer and dolphin go through their paces.

Then, you’ll get onto a platform in the water and have 30 minutes to interact, play and even get your photo taken while getting a kiss from a dolphin. Life aquatic isn’t cheap; tickets for adults and children are over $100 each. But it’s an amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity.

Tiptoe through the tulips at J.R. O’Neal Botanic Garden, just a short walk from the harbor, across Waterfront Drive. Just kidding about the tulips, this is the tropics, after all.

A walk through this 4-acre garden leads you through a wide range of indigenous vegetation, from cacti to herbs and orchids. Learn about the plants and trees native to this area or sit in the shade under a massive banyan tree.

Meander along the paths past fountains and exotics ferns and take a break from the blazing Caribbean sun. A small admission fee is charged.

Your day in Tortola will go by quicker than you’d like. Choose the best Tortola shore excursion for your time in port before you leave home so you don’t miss a thing.

I have read many of the threads that discuss whether or not Moscow is worth the expense and long day, especially when there are only 2 days in port.  I realize there are two strong opinions from people with one side saying it is worth it and the other side says stay in St Petersburg. We have decided to go Moscow on day 1 of our visit. 

So, those who have done the long trip to Moscow....did you go with the cruise ship or a private guide?   If a private guide, who and would you recommend them?  Did you take the train both ways or fly one direction?

Been to Moscow several times. We have used the Sapsan both ways and have also flown both ways - never a combo of the train/plane. We enjoyed the Sapsan more than the flight. We have NOT travelled to Moscow when arriving by cruise ship so have no comment on your particular situation regarding a one day tour with only 2 days in St. Pete.  Good luck - hope the visit meets your expectations.

Thanks for the info.  Good to know you enjoyed the train more than the plane - I would expect we would too as flying is typically more hassle than taking the train.  

We decided to book the trip to Moscow with the cruise ship after learning that if we miss the train or plane we don’t get a refund in addition to missing Moscow.  And, I’ve had friends who’s ship missed the St Petersburg stop due to weather.

Moscow is a great city but I would rather spend all two days in St Petersburg. Some years ago we had almost a week there and still it doesn’t seem enough. We also had one day in Moscow and the journey arranged by the local travel agency was well organized and comfortable. In a view of time restrictions of the journey (we spent almost 8 hours on the train and just 6-7 hours in the city) one day in Moscow still felt a little rushed. Anyway, enjoy planning your trip and hope you have a great time in Russia!

Just make sure the day you are going to Moscow, it is not one of their holidays or even a day before a holiday.

Moscow is an amazing city but it is frustrating when Red Square is closed for parades, etc.... It is hard to determine when they close it but it is definitely closed for their holidays. When it is closed - you can only walk around the exterior of the square and look in.

I have 2 days in St. Petersburg and am thinking about this possibility. I think it’s hard to do this with 2 days. The first day will take longer time to go ashore because of the immigration process. The second day is not possible due to the early all abroad time. It seems that it’s only worth doing it if there are 3 days in St. Petersburg especially when a full day of touring in Moscow is preferred.

For 2 days - spend the time in St. Petersburg. There is so much to see there. Save this for a 2nd trip.

When we were in St. Petersburg we were also very interested in visiting Moscow. We were already in Russia why not visit as much places as we could, right? We used Anastasia Travel for our St. Petersburg tour and also asked them to include Moscow. They were very helpful and were very much willing to arrange a day trip to Moscow for us but they suggested we just stay in St. Petersburg since we only had 2 days. They were kind enough to explain that we would just waste time and money if me push through with the Moscow trip. We would spend more time on the train instead of using the time to explore and enjoy the sights. They were actually correct and we ended up enjoying a wonderful 2-day tour in St. Petersburg. I guess we'll have to go back to see Moscow and make sure to stay longer!

When we went to St Petersburg we had the same dilemma. We decided not to go to Moscow and didn’t regret it one bit. There is so much to see! If you spend the 2 days in St Petersburg you can go and see Peterhof Palace on one of the days. We were on a Princess cruise and like flowslow, we booked our private tours with Katharina from Anastasia Travel.   This way we used our time to the fullest to see as much as possible at our pace with a personal guide. (We are not fond of the big group tours from the cruise lines).

We have two days and decided only staying in SPB for both days. We are thinking of forming a private tour with other cruisers on another forum as the CC roll call for that cruise is so quiet. We are looking into Anastasia Travel as well. Very excited to go!

Great idea to form a small group!! Have a fantastic time and I am sure you wont regret that decision!!

I'm not sure about customs when coming in on a cruise ship. We were told that if we wanted to leave the ship, we would have to be on a tour, either a ships tour or private tour. I know we had to show our tour tickets at customs to be allowed to go further. We chose Alla tours and they were fantastic. We were docked in St. Petersburg for 3 days and we did go to Moscow on the Capsan train on the 2nd day. It was a VERY long day. We had to meet our group at 6:00am and were on the train at 7:00am. We arrived back at to our cabin at 1:30am the next day. It was a wonderful day and we're so glad we went but if we were in St. Petersburg for only 2 days, I probably wouldn't spend a day in Moscow. It is a 4 hour train ride each way, and if you need to be back to the ship to depart, it may not leave you much time in Moscow. The 8 hours we spent there, wasn't nearly enough. Traffic is horrible and we ended up getting off our bus and taking the subway to Red Square. Those 8 hours allowed us a tour of Red Square, which was phenomenal as well as a quick walk through GUM department store and a ride on the subway with several stops to see the mosaics, sculptures and chandeliers that are in the corridors of the subway stops.

But.....there is so much to see in St. Petersburg , the 2 days we spent there, were a whirl.

Whatever you decide to do, be sure you're in line to get off the ship before the ship arrives in port. We were in line an hour early and there were still about 20 people ahead of us. We found that the cruise ship allowed their tour groups to get off the ship first, so when we got to customs, the lines were outrageous. It took us about an hour in line and we were late starting our tour. I had organized the tour with Alla and had advertised it on our cruise forum here at Cruise Critic. There were 12 of us and we met up on the ship each morning and went through customs together so we all met the tour bus at the same time. That was very helpful!

The lines the first day were the worst and days 2 and 3 went much more quickly. Also, everyone was getting off the ship at the same time on Day 1, but tours met and left at different times on Days 2 and 3.

This is one of the reasons that we decided to use the cruise ship to go to Moscow our first day in St Petersburg.

Yes, as others have noted, there is MUCH to see in Saint Petersburg and in spending a week there one will barely scratch the surface - the same is true for Moscow.

It sounds like you want to get a "taste" of both cities - don't allow anyone to "throw water" on your plans as you best know what you want to do. You can always return for an extended visit.  😉

No, our ship tour is going by train there and back unless I misread something.  You are right...we just want a taste of both cities.  In fact, that is what we get from all cruise port stops - just a taste.  We are never there long enough to the see the area completely.

Interesting - I thought that the ship tours flew to Moscow when in port for only 2 days. Hope you will post upon return and let us know how it went.

Double checked and it says we go to Moscow on the high speed train.   Come back the same way.   From all I’ve read it takes a little longer (ship to Moscow sites) to fly than to take the train.  

I've been thinking about that - and I might be wrong, but it seems to me an SPB-Moscow combo over a 3-day cruise is one of the few remaining cases where obtaining a full-fledged Russian visa actually makes sense (especially for families/groups and especially if one is willing to do some DIY trip planning). 

Just to make sure, though - for those staying on the ship, is there some kind of curfew, or are you able to come and go as you please?

If you have a Russian visa there is no curfew - you may come and go as you wish. In fact, if you so choose, you can spend the entire time in the city (staying at a hotel in either Moscow or St. Petersburg) rather than returning to your ship each evening - but ONLY if you have a visa.

That is what my research shows too.  A quick google search showed the tourist visas for US citizens are $160.  I’m willing to pay for a tour rather than get the visa.  We’ve gotten most of the visas that are a pain to get and I’m tired of doing that.

I'm just trying to come up with a reasonably conservative number - what can one realistically expect to pay for a mad 1-day Moscow dash if they go DIY.

For a regular SPB-only itinerary, visa doesn't seem to make sense - not only price-wise, but also from the standpoint of convenience - all the local operators have their itineraries down to a science.

With Moscow, though, it's not so clear-cut.

I found that most of the tour operators will give you a tour but no guarantee that you make it to Moscow because you will miss the train if debarkation is too slow.  I found one tour that offers a 2 day tour with a flight to Moscow day 1 and train back and St Petersburg day 2.   Seriously considered them.   I briefly thought about getting a visa and spending the night in Moscow but never priced everything out. If you look into that I would love to see what you find. Probably not for us though because I want to see some of both cities.

I have visited Russia multiple times. I received my latest 3 year visa in May and here are the associated costs:

Single/Double/Multiple entry visa, consular fee = $198

Visa Center Processing fee = $50

Total = $248   (this is your total if you apply in person at one of the 4 consulates located in the USA - since I don't live near a Russian consulate, I must use the more costly mail option)

SO ... here is what I actually paid:

Multiple entry visa, consular fee = $198

Visa Center Processing fee by mail = $120

Return shipping/handling fee = $35

Total = $353

Totally worth the fee as I spend multiple weeks in Russia yearly and prefer DIY - personally, I would not consider a visa if it was a one time visit via cruise.

So, for DIY, added to the visa expense, one must add the cost of the sapsan train (or flight), Moscow transportation (metro is great), food & associated entrance fees to the Kremlin (and whatever else one has the time/desire to visit).

FYI: There is a HOHO in both Moscow & St. Petersburg.

Okay, I think the diy budget might be something like ₽20,000 (about $300) per person. This includes:

Train tickets: ₽9000 (5+4); Kremlin+armory: 1700 (1000+700)

Boat ride:600

Meals: 3000 (1500 per casual meal)

Contingencies (Uber ride if needed, etc): 2500. 

It's based on a number of assumptions, so real-life mileage will vary - please let me know if you identify some glaring omissions or errors.

Assumptions:

Done on day 2 of three.

Good weather (lots of outside/walking time)

Earliest Sapsan to Moscow, overnight double decker from Moscow (no hotel stays)

Train tickets purchased at least 30 days in advance, economy for Sapsan and economy plus for the double decker (includes a bottle of water and a piece of gingerbread).

All group members are adults

Done on a day when the Kremlin, Red Sq, and other Moscow attractions are actually open.

Boat ride via watertrams-radisson.ru (the cheapest option with English audio guide)

Sample itinerary:

leave SPB on Sapsan 743a (5:30am), sleep on the train.

Arrive Moscow 9am

DIY Metro tour until 11am

Kremlin excursion (cathedral Sq, DIY) 11:30

Armory excursion (audioguide) 12:30 

Quick lunch (at GUM stolovaya or fast food chains at Manezhnaya sq) : 2 to 3pm.

Walk to Zaryadye boat pier via Alexander's garden, Red Sq, Zaryadye. Boats leave every 30 minutes. Route: Zaryadye- Gorky Park - luzhniki- Ukraina - turnaround - sparrow hills - Gorky Park. Time on board: 2 hrs. 

Gorky Park/muzeon (5:30 to 7:30). 

Head back (metro) towards red sq for evening walk/dinner (tverskaya-kamergersky-b.dmitrovka-metropol-nikolskaya area)

Need to be back at the train station by 10:30 to catch the 006aa train departing at 10:50. 

Back to SPB at 6:47 am.

Cargo ship that hit Baltimore bridge was involved in Antwerp collision in 2016

The same vessel that hit the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday, destroying it and sending people and vehicles tumbling into the water, was also involved in a collision while leaving the port of Antwerp, Belgium, in 2016.

According to Vessel Finder and the maritime incident archive Shipwrecklog, the Dali – a 948ft (290-meter) cargo ship with a capacity of 10,000 containers – was leaving the container terminal of Antwerp heading to Bremerhaven.

As it did so, its bow reportedly swung around, causing the stern to scrape the side of the quay, significantly damaging several meters of the hull.

The ship was reportedly detained by authorities afterward and docked in Deurganckdok, Belgium . There were reportedly no injuries or adverse pollution.

According to Vessel Finder , the weather was fine at the time, and the incident was reportedly blamed on the ship’s master and pilot on board.

What are flags of convenience?

A ship flying a flag of convenience means the owner has registered the vessel in a country other than their own. The ship flies the ensign or flag of that country, known as the flag state and operates under its laws, typically laxer than the owner’s own.

For a ship owner, the advantage of this arrangement includes comparatively fewer regulations, lower employment requirements, and thus cheaper labour, cheaper registration fees and lower or no taxes.

For crew members, the disadvantages tend towards lower working standards, fewer rights and little protection. They are opposed by the International Transport Workers' Federation.

Panama, which has the largest ship registry globally, followed by Liberia, operates an “open registry”, allowing foreign owners to register ships under its flag. It guarantees anonymity to the owners, making it difficult for them to be held to account.

The practice began in the 1920s in the US, when owners of cruise ships registered their vessels in Panama so that they could serve their passengers alcohol during Prohibition.

It is unclear what crew were aboard the ship. Vessel Finder said at the time that the ship, which was built in South Korea in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, was owned by the Greek company Oceanbulk Maritime but was chartered by Maersk.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed on Tuesday that the Dali was registered in Singapore and had 22 crew on board, with Maersk adding in a statement that the crew were all Indian but none of them were Maersk crew or personnel. It said the ship was operated by the charter vessel company Synergy Group.

Maersk has been approached for comment.

About 2.6km (1.6 miles) of the Baltimore bridge collapsed on Tuesday when the Dali crashed into it, causing a number of vehicles to fall into the Patapsco River below. At least seven people were being searched for with two rescued, including one in critical condition, officials said on Tuesday at a pre-dawn press conference.

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge into the Patapsco River overnight has an impact on the Port of Baltimore and cruises.

The Maryland Port Administration announced on Tuesday the suspension of vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore until further notice. The port is not shut down and it's still processing trucks inside of the terminals.

As far as cruises go, Carnival Cruise Line sent a statement to 11 News, saying it will temporarily move Carnival Legend's Baltimore operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

Carnival Legend was scheduled to return to Baltimore from its current voyage on Sunday. It will now return to Norfolk on Sunday, and guests will be provided free bus service to Baltimore.

Carnival Legend's next seven-day itinerary on March 31 will then operate from and return to Norfolk. Guests on the current and upcoming cruises are being informed of this change.

"Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore," Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement. "We appreciate the pledge made by President (Joe) Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible . As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk."

WBAL-TV 11 News has also reached out to Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and will update this article when a response is received. Royal Caribbean has a sailing scheduled to leave Baltimore in April.

The Cruise Lines International Association's statement follows: "We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted. We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind — to save lives. We are closely following this situation. Right now, the most important thing to do is to allow the emergency workers to do their work."

Based on published itineraries, there are 12 ships making 115 ship calls in 2024. Baltimore is the 29th largest cruise port in the U.S. with 378,000 passengers scheduled to move through the port.

The Baltimore Water Taxi released a statement, saying its service continues in the harbor: "Today, the entire Baltimore Water Taxi team is thinking of all those impacted by the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse – families and friends of loved ones who are missing and the first responders at the scene working under dangerous conditions. Baltimore is a tough, brave community. Together, we will come out of this tragedy even stronger.

"At this time, the Harbor Connector continues to provide public transit. We will alert the public if any impacts to our operations develop."

Carnival Cruise Passenger Captures Ship Fire on Video After Reports of Lightning Strike

The incident marks the second time in two years this particular ship has caught fire. It has caused the cancellation of two upcoming voyages

A Carnival cruise ship’s exhaust funnel caught fire on Saturday during a trip to the Bahamas, causing the company to cancel its next two voyages.

This is the second time in less than two years that the Carnival Freedom, based in Port Canaveral, Fla., has been impacted by a fire.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations, told Florida Today in a statement. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

PEOPLE has reached out to Carnival, but did not immediately hear back.

While the cause of the fire is still being investigated, Carnival noted in a post on X Saturday that eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike.

One of the cruise’s passengers, Heath Barnes, posted footage of the incident on Facebook Saturday afternoon.

In a statement to TMX, Barnes said it had been storming on and off and he was on one of the ship’s upper decks when he experienced “the loudest thunder and lightening [sic] I have ever heard.”

After he returned to his cabin for about 15 minutes, his nephew and two friends came to tell him the ship was on fire.

“I thought they were giving me a hard time but I got up and went out on the balcony and sure enough the flames and smoke was pouring out of the tail,” he continued, adding that he took the videos from his balcony before travelers were asked to stay indoors.

Carnival's brand ambassador John Heald addressed the incident on Facebook, acknowledging that those impacted by the cancellations “will be feeling very disappointed.” 

“And I want to add my apologies and my assurances that when you rebook using your full refund and your 100% future cruise credit, that the crew will be standing by to give you all the Fun you deserve,” he added.

In May 2022, the Carnival Freedom caught fire during a five-day cruise to Turks and Caicos.

At the time, Carnival Cruise Line verified that a fire broke out in the funnel of the ship while it was in Grand Turk.

The company said its "emergency response team quickly activated and extinguished" the flames.

"All guests and crew are safe, and the ship's guests were cleared by local authorities to go ashore," Carnival added.

The 948-foot Carnival Freedom, built in 2007, can hold just over 3,500 passengers, according to Cruise Mapper .

Carnival Cruise Line said the crew reported a fire on the port side of the ship's exhaust funnel around 3:15 p.m. Saturday. The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas, sailing to Freeport after being unable to dock at Princess Cay due to weather conditions. 

"Our onboard team acted quickly to contain and put out the fire," Carnival Cruise Line said. "While we continue to investigate multiple eyewitness reports of a lightning strike, our technical team completed a thorough assessment during the ship’s visit to Freeport on Sunday."

Around the time of the fire, radar showed a storm cell over the area and a lot of lightning activity.

Multiple passenger videos show flames and dark smoke billowing from the exhaust funnel as rain continues to pour onto the deck.

Passenger Heath Barnes said the ship was supposed to dock at Princess Cay on Saturday about 9 a.m., but passengers were told that the boat would continue to Freeport due to strong winds . 

During the afternoon, the rain returned, and passengers reported hearing loud thunder and then seeing the smoke. Soon after, guests were told to remain in their cabins.

"Why is our tail on fire?" someone can be heard saying in the video recorded by Barnes. "That's not good, y'all."

On Monday, Carnival Freedom returned to Port Canaveral , where guests disembarked.

The cruise line said damage to the ship is "more than we first thought" and will require immediate repair to stabilize the funnel. Cruises scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on March 25th and March 29th have been canceled. All guests on the canceled trips will receive a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit.

FOX Business reported that the same cruise ship caught on fire in 2022 after being struck by lightning.

Another video recorded on Saturday by X user @breezebreeze showed the fire on the ship.

LONDON (Reuters) – A major bridge collapsed in the U.S. port of Baltimore in the early hours of Tuesday after being struck by a container ship, plunging cars into the river below.

Traffic was suspended at the port until further notice, Maryland transportation authorities said.

PORT FEATURES

It is the deepest harbor in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, closer to the Midwest than other East Coast ports, with five public and 12 private terminals, according to Maryland government website.

It is one of the smallest container ports on the Northeastern seaboard, handling 265,000 containers in the fourth quarter of last year, according to container shipping expert Lars Jensen.

The Port of New York and New Jersey handled around 2 million containers in that same period, and Norfolk Port in Virginia handled 850,000, so the flow of containers to Baltimore can likely be redistributed to bigger ports, Jensen said.

CURRENT STATUS OF CARGO SHIPS INSIDE PORT

More than 40 ships remained inside Baltimore port, including small cargo ships, tug boats and pleasure craft, data from ship tracking and maritime analytics provider MarineTraffic shows.

At least 30 other ships had signalled their destination was Baltimore, the data showed.

It is the busiest U.S. port for car shipments, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration.

The port handles imports and exports for major automakers including Nissan, Toyota, General Motors, Volvo Car, Jaguar Land Rover and Volkswagen, including luxury models for Audi, Lamborghini and Bentley.

It is also the largest U.S. port by volume for handling farm and construction machinery, as well as agricultural products.

Imports of agricultural products totalled 3 million tonnes last year, including 1.2 million of sugar and salt, as well as gypsum, fertilisers and forest products, according to Ishan Bhanu, lead agricultural commodities analyst at Kpler.

Other top imports were paper/paperboard and plywood/veneer/particle board, the Maryland authority website shows.

In 2023, the port was the second busiest for coal exports. Its eight dry bulk terminals exported 22 million tonnes of coal last year and small amounts of other metals and minerals, according to Kpler’s Bhanu.

Other top export commodities by weight in 2022 were liquefied natural gas (LNG), wastepaper, ferrous scrap, and automobiles/light trucks, according to Maryland government data.

Cove Point, which is upstream from the bridge, is the nearest LNG terminal. ICIS ship tracking data show Cove Point typically exports about 500,000 tonnes per month.

CRUISE SHIPS

It is also a cruise terminal, with operators Norwegian, Carnival and Royal Caribbean, all using the port for Caribbean, Canadian, and other Atlantic destinations.

In 2023, cruises carrying more than 444,000 passengers departed from the port, the Maryland government website says.

LONDON METAL EXCHANGE WAREHOUSES

In Baltimore warehouses registered with the London Metal Exchange, there are 756 metric tons of nickel, 150 tons of tin and 50 tons of copper, LME data shows.

Video shows Carnival Freedom on fire, again. Two upcoming cruises were canceled. Here's what to know

The Carnival Freedom 's next two sailings have been canceled after the cruise ship, based out of Florida, caught fire . Again.

Carnival initially said there were no expected changes in its schedule but on Sunday afternoon announced cancellations of the Monday and Friday cruises out of Port Canaveral, which come during a busy spring break period.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," according to a statement issued by Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

This is the second time in less than two years this cruise ship's funnel has caught on fire and disrupted the schedule.

When did the Carnival Freedom catch on fire?

The fire broke out on the port side of the ship's exhaust funnel area at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, Carnival said.

The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas. It was intended to call on the Carnival private island of Princess Cay but had rerouted toward Freeport due to adverse weather.

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," an earlier Carnival statement said. The fire was put out by 5:20 p.m., the cruise line said.

"Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike, and that is being investigated," Carnival said, "but cannot yet be confirmed."
