The UK’s biggest country music export The Shires have announced an intimate acoustic tour for 2024. The two of us tour will see Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes tour the length and breadth of the UK performing all their classic tracks. Tickets go on sale Friday 15 th  December at 10am via  HERE *. The Shires have an impressive track record that speaks volumes about their success in the country music scene. With three consecutive UK Top 3 albums, four #1 UK Country albums, over 100 million streams, two Gold-certified records, and numerous sold-out headline shows, including a memorable performance at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall, The Shires have firmly established themselves as trailblazers.

Their journey began in 2014 with the breakthrough single ‘Nashville Grey Skies,’ a playful ode to the need for a British country scene. They not only envisioned but actively contributed to making it a reality, starting with their 2015 debut ‘Brave,’ which became the first-ever Top 10 album by a UK country music artist. This success continued with a string of hit albums: ‘My Universe’ (2016), ‘Accidentally On Purpose’ (2018), ‘Good Years’ (2020), and ’10 Year Plan’ (2022).

Fate is a curious thing. One small twist here, a turn there… Before they became The Shires, singer-songwriters Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes had met a series of dead-ends. Now they’re the UK’s most successful country music export, with four top 10 albums and hundreds of thousands of tickets sold around the world. 

The fact that Nashville has embraced The Shires with open arms – from a record deal to a history-making award from the American Country Music Association – is testament to the duo's authenticity. Debut single “Nashville Grey Skies,” a playful song about Britain needing its own country scene, caught the attention of broadcasting legend Bob Harris in 2014. Achieving a place on the BBC Radio 2 A list, its soaring harmonies and uplifting sound offered an early glimpse at the alchemy that transpires when Earle and Rhodes join forces. Career milestones followed like pieces of a jigsaw fitting into place: supporting slots with Little Big Town, The Corrs, and Carrie Underwood (during her Cry Pretty UK tour), playing C2C Festival, a sold-out headline tour and the release of their spectacular debut album,   Brave,   which became the first-ever top 10 album by a UK country music act. Another three top 10 albums followed: 2016’s   My Universe   (featuring fan-favourite “Daddy’s Little Girl”, about Rhodes’s late father), 2018’s   Accidentally on Purpose,   and 2020’s   Good Years,   each one soaring to No 3 in the UK. 

As it did for so many, though, 2020 brought fresh challenges. The Shires had been booked as the first-ever British act to play the main stage at C2C festival – about to board the plane from Nashville to the O2 Arena in London – when live events were brought to a devastating halt. Always keen to seek out those silver linings, Earle and Rhodes decided to use this unexpected free time as a creative reset. “We were in rehearsals joking how we’d end up on the street busking, then a couple of months later we were like, 'Seriously what are we gonna do?!'” Earle recalls. In between the bread-baking and home-schooling, he found himself in his home studio, rediscovering some of the songwriter identity he’d lost amid so many fruitful collaborations over the years. The result is immediately apparent on   Ten Year Plan   – The Shires’ fifth album, and one of the most enthralling, soul-stirring country albums of 2022.    

It opens on “Cut Me Loose”, a colourful blast of country-pop euphoria that recalls early classics by Taylor Swift and Lady A. “I’m getting dizzy from the runaround/ Wasting time trying to figure out/ What your game is all about,” Rhodes sings, before the embers catch and the chorus bursts into flame, licks of pedal steel forging with percussion as thunderous and joyful as wild horses on the run. It’s a song where Rhodes is given full rein to show off her astounding voice, belting out the chorus with raw passion. “If you listen to our first two albums, we sing everything equally,” she explains. “As the years have gone by, there are certain songs where one of us takes the lead, and that’s the case here.” 

Ten Year Plan   takes all of The Shires’ biggest influences and condenses them into one cohesive, confident record. “Where country music is now really reminds me of the songs I grew up with,” Earle says. The deeply affecting “Skydive” demonstrates Earle’s affinity for an exquisite, Coldplay-style anthem. Piano notes freefall gracefully, like autumn leaves dancing in a soft breeze, as the duo’s voices come together in perfect harmony: “You jump, I tumble into the blue/Wherever you go, I’ll follow you.” Then comes the build, piano and guitar surging upwards, towards the horizon. “Sparks Fly” brings in a folk flair with a propulsive banjo riff and a fantastic sense of space in the production; it’s a song built for stadiums.  

One track that means a lot to both Earle and Rhodes is “Plot Twist”, written with London-based artist Beth McCarthy. Performed over soft strums of acoustic guitar, it encapsulates the nervousness that creeps in when we know we should be at our happiest, because we can’t help but think the rug is about to be pulled from under our feet. “It’s how I feel about The Shires,” Earle admits. “We both had false starts – I got signed, Crissie was on The X Factor – and I can’t help but have this mentality of, ‘How long is this going to last?’ On “Plot Twist”, he gives this feeling more of a romantic slant; the slight tension in the harmonies create a yin and yang, as one offers comfort to the other’s anxieties. “It’s my favourite on the record, and musically it’s quite different for us – quite Civil Wars-esque – pushing the boundaries of what country music is,” Earle says.  

Perhaps the biggest lyrical curveball on the record is “Bar Without You”. What at first seems like a traditional kiss-off song transpires to be something entirely different. “I could go dancing, have a good time/ See that ‘come on over’ look in a stranger’s eyes,” Rhodes sings. But: “There ain’t a bar without you in it/ Ain’t a drink, ain’t a song, ain’t a passin’ minute/ That my heart ain’t missing you/ Wishing your drink was next to mine/ Baby don’t you forget it.” It’s what The Shires do best: putting a smart spin on some of the more well-worn tropes of country music. “It’s saying don’t worry when I go, you’re always in my thoughts,” Earle says, nodding. “But that’s the point – it does feel like a sad song.” Rhodes notes that the harmonies here play to their strengths, too: “It’s what we do best, the way we layer them together.” Usually, the duo would add extra backing vocals, but saw no need to this time round: “It’s fascinating because we recorded in the shed [at Earle’s home], and so it’s really gone back to just us,” he says.  

While The Shires have enjoyed plenty of chart success and recognition among fans both in the UK and overseas, it’s not always been the easiest ride. “The number of people enjoying country music has exploded in the UK, but it still feels like an undercurrent,” Rhodes says. “Even recently, we’ve had people come to our shows and say they were surprised, because they didn’t think country was for them!” Earle recalls one moment when they had achieved the third best-selling album of the year. The first, second and fourth best-selling records were all nominated at the Brit Awards… somehow, The Shires didn’t make the cut. “People almost don’t believe me when I say we sold out the Royal Albert Hall,” Earle says, laughing. “But I’ll take all of [the achievements we’ve had] over anything else.” 

Their song “Side by Side” celebrates those moments that seem like more than just a case of “right case, right time”, including their own first meeting. “I live under the flight path in Luton, so at night it’s pitch black and you can see all the stars,” Earle says. “I went out and this thought came into my head, if every person was a star, what are the chances you ended up next to this one person? It’s like that Sliding Doors thing…” By the time she was in her early twenties, Rhodes had already graduated from a music course at university, performed cover songs at weddings and pubs around the UK, and reached boot camp on The X Factor after initially being tipped as a winner. Earle had struggled as a solo singer before trying his hand as a songwriter for other artists. Neither of them had imagined they would succeed as a country act. “Nobody would have known back then that I liked country music,” Rhodes says with a smile. “I didn’t tell anyone! I didn’t know anyone else who liked it.” 

All of that changed in 2012 when Earle, who had by then fallen in love with pioneering country artists such as Kacey Musgraves, posted a message on Facebook: “There must be a country singer somewhere.” A friend tagged Rhodes; the next day, she was sitting in Earle’s living room. “He’d sent me some songs and I emailed straight back,” she recalls. “We met up in his little flat in St Alban’s, sat down and talked about all these songs that we loved. It was crazy to find someone who had that same passion to do country music.” For Earle, everything that had been difficult before became easy once he met Rhodes. “I said to her, ‘This isn’t normal, you don’t just get a record deal. You don’t just get on the radio.” But The Shires did.   

Almost a decade later, their initial goals now come across as ludicrously modest when you consider what they’ve achieved since. “We wanted to get our music to Bob Harris, and we wanted a thousand Facebook followers,” Rhodes laughs. “At the time that seemed crazy, but Ben was committed to it.” Title track “Ten Year Plan” is imbued with Earle’s natural optimism; a little tongue-in-cheek, but poignant, too. It’s the perfect song to start a new year, one that follows plenty of bumps in the road, all those unexpected turns, but perhaps has brought us to where we need to be. It's a song – and an album – to remind us to be grateful for the things we might otherwise take for granted. Here’s to the next 10 years.

At just 22-years-old, Billie Eilish has accomplished more than most recording artists will in their entire lives.

Eilish just announced she is embarking on the worldwide ‘HIT ME HARD AND SOFT: THE TOUR’ in support of her upcoming album with the same name, due out May 17.

Her 10-month run concludes at Dublin’s 3Arena on July 27, 2025.

Listening to your favorite musician at home is fun, but there's nothing quite like the experience of singing along with them, and tons of more fans, live. And as luck would have it, 2024 is shaping up to be a massive year for some of the world's top musical acts, so chances are your favorite performer might be stopping at a city near you soon.

Ahead, we rounded up some of the biggest concert tours of 2024, ranging from Taylor Swift's mega-popular Eras Tour to Drake and J. Cole's exciting It's All A Blur Tour - Big as the What?—set to kick off this winter. You can also expect tour dates from classic icons like Stevie Nicks, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and more.

1) Taylor Swift

Undoubtedly one of the biggest concert tours ever, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour will continue right through 2024. The international leg of the tour kicked off in Japan, where she played four shows in Tokyo. She'll also stop in Melbourne, Singapore, Paris, Madrid, London, Milan, and more before returning to the States to play in the fall.

There's nothing like seeing T. Swift IRL, but don't fret if you're unable to nab tickets—the Eras Tour movie is now available to stream from the comfort of your home.

2) Olivia Rodrigo

This is not a drill—"Drivers License" singer Olivia Rodrigo will be hitting the road on tour starting at the end of February. The Guts World Tour runs from February through mid-August and has dates in Nashville, Toronto, Chicago, and New York City, among others. Even cooler? Rodrigo will have a stacked list of special guests—like PinkPantheress, Remi Wolf, The Breeders, and Chappell Roan—with her.

3) Red Hot Chili Peppers

Did you hear the good news? The Red Hot Chili Peppers have extended their global tour through summer 2024. The buzzy stadium tour, which kicked off in June 2022, will now run until July 2024 and bring the California-based band to places like Los Angeles, Tampa, Toronto, and Salt Lake City.

4) Bad Bunny

It's fitting that "Monaco" rapper Bad Bunny titled his tour Most Wanted —it's slated to be one of the year's hottest tours. Planned to help promote his latest studio album, Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana , Most Wanted will kick off in Salt Lake City on February 21 and run through May 26.

5) Billy Joel

If you haven't yet seen Billy Joel perform live, there's still time! The Piano Man has added more tour dates to his schedule, stopping in cities like Tampa, New York, Denver, and St. Louis this year. Even more exciting? He'll share the stage with fellow iconic performers Sting and Stevie Nicks for some of these dates.

Mitski recently announced that she's expanding her North American tour dates , and we couldn't be more excited. The months-long tour, which supports her 2023 studio album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, has a long list of stops, including Miami Beach, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Paris.

There's nothing quite like a Madonna concert, that's for sure. The singer's Celebration Tour , which started last October, continues straight through the spring with dates in Seattle, San Francisco, Mexico City, and more. Besides her eye-catching sets, chart-topping songs, and impressive choreography, concertgoers also get a glimpse of the performer's fantastic costumes, which include looks from Versace and Jean Paul Gaultier.

8) Bleachers

The New Jersey-founded rock band, which is fronted by Jack Antonoff—known for producing albums for top acts like Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Lana Del Rey—not only has announced a new album but a new tour , too. The tour will start in the UK in March, ending fittingly in the band's home state of New Jersey in mid-June. 9) Nicki Minaj

Nicki fans rejoice: the rapper and singer might be coming to a city near you soon as part of her Pink Friday 2 World Tour. The massive tour will include performances in Brooklyn, Oakland, and Baltimore, with stops at Dreamville Festival and Rolling Loud California along the way.

10) Blink 182

Live out all of your nineties and early aughts pop-punk dreams with one of Blink 182's One More Time Tour dates. The tour, which supports the band's ninth studio album, One More Time..., will bring the trio to cities all over the globe, including Sydney, Santiago, Portland, and Boston. The tour's supporting act is Pierce the Veil, which is also worth checking out.

11) Stevie Nicks

The oh-so-magical Stevie Nicks continues her touring streak with a bunch of 2024 concert dates . Set to begin in Atlantic City, NJ on February 10, Nicks will visit a dozen cities throughout the U.S. this year, such as New Orleans, Omaha, and Chicago. "Let's keep this party going in 2024," the singer-songwriter posted on her Instagram in September to announce the newly added tour dates.

12) The 1975

The 1975 is showing no signs of slowing down. The British band, famous for hits like "Somebody Else" and "Robbers," has extended their 2023 tour through 2024. Titled Still...At Their Very Best , the 22-date tour will open in Glasgow on February 8 and conclude in Amsterdam on March 24.

13) Drake and J. Cole

Rap greats Drake and J. Cole come together for the It's All a Blur Tour – Big As the What? which is guaranteed to be a good time. Drake, fresh off his 2023 It's All a Blur tour with 21 Savage, is set to hit dozens of cities starting in February, many of which J. Cole will also be in tow for. Scoop up tickets ASAP, as Drake's shows are known to sell out.

14) Janet Jackson

Superstar Janet Jackson is also extending her 2023 tour, Together Again , into 2024 with dates in Anaheim, Austin, New Orleans, and Hartford. Even cooler? Jackson's supporting act is the 2000s southern rap legend Nelly.

15) Rolling Stones

If you've ever dreamed of seeing the Rolling Stones perform live in person, now's your chance. The iconic rockers, who released their studio album Hackney Diamonds this past fall, are returning on the road for a 16-date tour with shows throughout the United States and Canada. Concertgoers can expect a mix of new tunes and Stones classics.

16) Bruce Springsteen

Famous for countless listenable hits like "Born to Run" and "Glory Days," Bruce Springsteen is set to embark on a massive world tour this year with his band, The E Street Band. The much-anticipated tour will take the Boss and his crew to cities such as Phoenix, San Diego, Dublin, and Madrid, from March through November.

17) John Mayer

Be sure to catch John Mayer's solo tour this year, which will bring the guitarist and crooner to cities throughout Europe. This leg, an extension of his popular 2023 solo tour, will kick off in Stockholm on March 13 and finish in Dublin on March 29.

18) Shania Twain

Okay, this one is technically a residency , but we're excited nonetheless. Shania Twain, most known for her incredible outfits (her hooded leopard print look, anyone?) and hits like "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" is setting up shop in Vegas starting May 10. Twain's residency will take place at the Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood on and off throughout December 2024.

All good things must come to an end. The Eagles, known for "Hotel California" and other amazing rock songs, began their final concert tour this winter. It launched in Phoenix on January 20, with March 16 as its last date in the United States. Eagles fans won't want to miss this one.

20) Alanis Morisette: The Triple Moon Tour

Alanis Morisette joins forces with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts for their 2024 Triple Moon Tour , which has dates in North America and Canada. This tour is a great one to catch this summer, as it's slated to run from June through August.

Northam's 'Flying 50' helps preserve a piece of Australian racing history

The streets of a West Australian country town have been transformed into an old-school race track in celebration of the storied history of Australian motorsport.

With roads closed and bollards erected, the streets of Northam, 100 kilometres east of Perth in WA's Wheatbelt, turn into a 1950s inspired racetrack almost overnight, where thousands of spectators watch time trial action up close. 

Prior to the creation of purpose-built tracks such as Wanneroo Raceway and the Collie Motorplex, car enthusiasts took to the streets of towns such as Northam, Geraldton, Narrogin, Pingelly, Beverley and Albany. 

The only two around-the-town style events that remain in Australia — Northam and Albany — are both in WA.

Northam Motor Sport Festival co-event coordinator Randle Beavis attributed the event's long-term success to the community's natural curiosity for days gone by. 

"We are continually showing people, as they migrate away from cities and move to country regions, which we know they're doing ... that this is what used to happen once upon a time," Mr Beavis said.

"For this year's 90 competitors it is a chance to do something they may have never done before, all while showing off their pride and joy."

First run in 1952, before being phased out later that decade, the Northam Flying 50 re-emerged in 1999.

Entrant numbers for the 2024 event, held at the weekend, were the highest since before the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Mr Beavis said safety was a key component of the event's continuation in the Wheatbelt.

"WA is unbelievably fortunate to get the only two events that the country has both in the same state," Mr Beavis said.

"We have recreated and managed each year's events in a manner that is showing the general public, shires and insurance companies that we can set up, run and achieve these events in today's world without any issues. 

"We've been doing it for that long that the authorities have realised that these people know what they're doing, they can do it safely."

Mr Beavis said organisers with hopes of replicating the success of the Northam Flying 50 often had a critical eye on the event. 

"We have been scrutinised, and we continually get scrutinised, because various motorsport groups on the east coast are always looking to do these kinds of events, and they keep getting knocked back," he said.

"We're under immense scrutiny about our events to make sure that we run them correctly, and that we don't have any major issues — but they can't find a reason to shut us down — that's how we see it."

Women's contribution

The theme of this year's festival was Celebrating Women in Australian Motorsport. 

Car enthusiast and first-time attendee, Janielle Andersen, showcased a 1934 Ford Coupe hot rod she shared with her partner in the show and shine competition.

Ms Andersen said the competitive spirit of V8 Supercars and Formula 1 increased her appreciation for all things automotive.

"I've always been the person who keeps a keen eye out for new cars on the road, cars I want to own and appreciated cars in all the senses," she said.

"Being a part of a car club has given us the ability to travel to different towns and make new friends. 

"The race around the streets has been a stand out today; it's exciting to be at an event where people are actually racing the cars that they are showcasing."

Shire of Northam President Chris Antonio said the event was a focal point of the town's calendar, bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars to local businesses. 

"It's one of our four main cornerstone events of the year where people out of town travel to our shire and inject much-needed funds into our community," he said.

"I've already spoken to people who have booked their accommodation ready to come back next year which is a really good indication that we are doing something really special here."

Russia arrests another suspect in the concert hall attack that killed 144

A Moscow court has detained another suspect as an accomplice in the attack by gunmen on a suburban Moscow concert hall that killed 144 people in March, the Moscow City Courts Telegram channel said Saturday.

Dzhumokhon Kurbonov, a citizen of Tajikistan, is accused of providing the attackers with means of communication and financing. The judge at Moscow’s Basmanny District Court ruled that Kurbonov would be kept in custody until May 22 pending investigation and trial.

Russian state news agency RIA Novosti said Kurbonov was reportedly detained on April 11 for 15 days on the administrative charge of petty hooliganism. Independent Russian media outlet Mediazona noted that this is a common practice used by Russian security forces to hold a person in custody while a criminal case is prepared against them.

Twelve defendants have been arrested in the case, including four who allegedly carried out the attack at the Crocus City Hall concert venue, according to RIA Novosti.

Those four appeared in the same Moscow court at the end of March on terrorism charges and showed signs of severe beatings. One appeared to be barely conscious during the hearing. The court ordered that the men, all of whom were identified in the media as citizens of Tajikistan, also be held in custody until May 22.

A faction of the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the massacre in which gunmen shot people who were waiting for a show by a popular rock band and then set the building on fire. But Russian officials including President Vladimir Putin have persistently claimed, without presenting evidence, that Ukraine and the West had a role in the attack.

Ukraine denies involvement and its officials claim that Moscow is pushing the allegation as a pretext to intensify its fighting in Ukraine .
