Legendary Journeys and Adventures
Explore the best of New England on a journey through its picturesque heart, discovering new insights into landmark sites and historic homes, where country farms and nature's dramatically contrasting vistas evoke the spirit of a place whose ideas shaped America.
Classic New England lives in Boston Common, in the White Mountains aglow with autumn colors, in the general store and the diamond at Fenway Park... the drama of the rugged Maine coast... in Augustus Saint-Gaudens' studio where images of American heroes were forged, in millwheels, covered bridges, and white-steepled churches, and the rocky soil that has long been fertile ground for thinkers, artists, writers, inventors, entrepreneurs and Revolutionaries. This is, as Dayton Duncan observes, Ken Burns' backyard: "New England has always had a special place in American history and American thought. And New England has become Ken Burns' backyard – not just the place where he's raised his family and made his documentaries in the classic New England town of Walpole, New Hampshire, but also a place intertwined with many of the stories he's told: Mark Twain , Baseball , The Civil War and The National Parks: America's Best Idea . It's a distinct region with its own beauty and its own secret treasures – and who better to share them but one of its proudest residents."
Tauck Exclusive – film vignettes by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan

Ken Burns has been making groundbreaking films chronicling the "American story" for more than 30 years, with a mission to explore who we are as Americans. His films have won more than a dozen Emmy Awards and two Oscar nominations, and include documentaries about our national parks and pastimes, America's wars and wealthy families, the men and women who changed history, and the times that changed us all.

Over the decades, Fenway has accumulated a number of famous features, such as the legendary "Green Monster" left field wall; the center field "Triangle;" "Pesky's Pole" in right field; and "Williamsburg," named for Hall of Famer Ted Williams; you may see some of these landmarks on a walking tour of the stadium.
Mount Washington Omni Hotel

About Booking This Tour
Travel Documents
Hidden Gems of New England begins and ends in the U.S.
Real ID Act - Effective May 7, 2025
Beginning in May 2025, some state IDs will no longer permit you to board a domestic flight. Currently, some states are compliant, some have received extensions, and some are not compliant. Click here to see the status of your state. If your state license is not compliant, you can use a passport in lieu of a valid state ID.
Please Note: The federal government has extended the deadline to May 7, 2025 for domestic airline passengers to secure a Real ID driver's license for use as identification at the airport. Travelers without a verified license or ID card will also have the option of showing other identity documents, such as a passport or military ID to board a plane.
If you are traveling by air to join and/or depart from this tour within the U.S., please read the section entitled Airline Security Measures under Additional Information to determine what travel documentation is required.
If you are frequent traveler to the U.S. from Canada, you may benefit from the NEXUS program, which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet website by clicking here .
If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of the U.S. to determine what travel documentation is necessary. You may also log on to the U.S. State Department's Internet site by clicking here.
We strongly recommend that your passport be valid for six months beyond the completion of your tour. We also recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents or cards are misplaced, lost or stolen.
To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.
TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour
Air Information and Luggage Restrictions
AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.
TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.
AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.
Checked Luggage – General
Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).
Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.
Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.
Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.
Carry-on Luggage - General
Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.
For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.
Health, Safety and Mobility
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.
Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.
VACCINATIONS
If you are a resident of another country traveling to or within the U.S., we suggest that contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations and medications for vaccine-preventable diseases and other diseases for which you might be at risk when you reach your destination in the U.S. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .
To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.
All of the hotels and resorts on this itinerary have an elevator, with the exception of the Hawk Inn & Mountain Resort. If you have a walking difficulty, be sure to advise your Tauck Director at the beginning of the tour so that rooms close to the public areas or on the ground floor can be requested, if possible.
PLEASE NOTE: We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

What To Pack
Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.
Following is a list of recommended items to pack for New England tours:
- Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
- A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
- Insect repellent
- Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
- Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
- Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms

Itinerary idea in detail
Private customized tour.
On arrival in Boston, make your way to your accommodation. The rest of the day is free to explore this historic city at your own speed. You could visit Harvard University, look around the New England Aquarium, or browse the city's shops, galleries, and museums.
You will start the day with a guided walk along the Freedom Trail, taking in the city's iconic sights and gaining an insight into its fascinating history. You have the rest of the day at leisure — you may wish to visit Boston Common, Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, the red-brick houses of Beacon Hill or the world-famous Harvard University over the river in Cambridge.
Today, you will pick up your rental car. A gentle two-hour drive north takes you through the New England countryside to the coastal town of Kennebunkport, perched on Maine's rocky Atlantic coastline. Your afternoon is free to relax on the beach or explore this pretty coastal town's galleries and craft shops.
Today's two-and-a-half-hour drive takes you inland, the road weaving its way through New Hampshire's Lakes Region to the picture-postcard town of Jackson. The traditional town comes complete with a wooden covered bridge and white clapboard houses and is located in the heart of the White Mountains National Forest. There are many scenic walks and drives to enjoy in the surrounding area, or you can relax in your hotel while taking in the beautiful mountain scenery.
This morning, you will make your way to North Conway, where you will enjoy a train journey on an authentic cog railway up to Mount Washington's summit, the region's highest peak. You have the rest of the day at leisure to explore New Hampshire's White Mountains. This rugged region is a paradise for hikers, allowing an opportunity to sample the Appalachian Trail that stretches from Maine to Georgia. If you'd prefer to enjoy the panorama from the comfort of your car, we can recommend some excellent scenic drives that weave their way through the mountains.
Continue your journey southwest into Vermont — a particularly scenic drive along the Kancamagus Highway mountain road which is frequently rated as one of America's best scenic byways. Allow yourself plenty of time to stop at the numerous scenic viewpoints, and if you're lucky, you may even see moose meandering across the road, so ensure you have your camera on hand. This breathtaking drive takes you across the state border into Vermont and to the incredibly scenic Green Mountains. The rest of the day is free to explore Manchester's rolling hills and pretty villages.
A day at leisure to enjoy Vermont's Green Mountains. Take a scenic drive around some of the little towns here, or enjoy some easy hiking in the nearby hills. For those interested in history, Abraham Lincoln's family home at Hildene is just a short drive away, and shoppers are able to pick up bargains at Manchester's small selection of outlet stores.
Today's five-hour drive south brings you back to the coast and to the upmarket maritime town of Newport, Rhode Island. Be sure to visit one of the town's extravagant Gilded Age mansions, which were built in the late 19th century as summer homes for New York's wealthiest families.
Spend the day at leisure in the City by the Sea. You may wish to explore Newport's historic mansions for an insight into America's wealthiest families from the Gilded Age. Movie buffs will enjoy visiting Rosecliff, the house in Robert Redford's 1974 adaptation of The Great Gatsby.
An easy drive east takes you to Cape Cod, where your afternoon is free to relax on a beach, explore coastal villages or go whale watching — humpback, finback and minke whales migrate to these waters to feed between April and October.
Spend the day at leisure on Cape Cod. We recommend visiting Provincetown at the very tip of the Cape to enjoy the vibrant arts scene around Commercial Street.
One more day at leisure to enjoy the views as the Atlantic Ocean crashes onto this beautiful coastline, strewn with quaint harbors, windswept beaches, golden dunes and romantic lighthouses. It's worth making the trip up to Provincetown, known as one of America's premier whale-watching destinations, or you may wish to take the short ferry ride over to the islands of Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket. Your specialist will be able to provide more details on ferry tickets, schedules and whale-watching trips.
Return to Boston today to end your New England journey. During the two-hour journey, if your flight departs this evening, we recommend stopping at Plymouth, renowned as the landing point of the Pilgrim Fathers, who arrived in the New World on the Mayflower in 1620. You could also pay a visit to Pilgrim Hall Museum, which is the oldest continuous museum in the USA and has a collection of pilgrim artifacts. Plimoth Patuxet Museum is a well-established living history museum. Exhibits depict the lives of the Wampanoag community, who have lived in the region for thousands of years, and the 17th-century pilgrims who settled here. A superb reconstruction of the original ship, the Mayflower II, is not far away, which you can visit using your Plimoth Patuxet Museums ticket. Arriving in Boston, return your car before boarding your onward flight.

We will write up an itinerary for you based on your interests and how long you are able to tour, then, together we will custom tailor to your interests.
We can do these at any time of the year, and typically we would begin with a drive up the Maine Coast, see a bit of the ocean and lighthouses…maybe some woods – 80% of Maine is forest! We would then cross over into New Hampshire in the Lakes region, head north to North Conway in the Presidential Mountain Range, drive through the White Mountain National Park and along the scenic, winding 2-lane Kancamagus highway, maybe stroll through “The Flume” in Lincoln, or visit the elegant White Mountain Resort, where the Bretton Woods Accords established the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in 1945.
Including Boston, Concord and the Berkshires Mountains of Massachusetts is a nice way to start your journey. From there, your guide will make suggestions for stops along the way. There are many old villages to tour, orchards and wineries with cider donuts and wine tastings, cultural stops, antique shops and so much more.
We then come down the west side of the Lakes region and can stop at the Canterbury Shaker Village, which has a remarkable sense of serenity about it.
If you are daring, consider an optional open-cockpit bi-plane ride over the lakes and rolling hills of New Hampshire, or a warm-weather ride on a ski-lift to the top of a mountain for a view of the Presidential Mountain Range in the national forests of New Hampshire.
New Hampshire has no sales tax, no income tax, no bottle tax, and no gun laws – their state motto is “Live Free or Die”, and there are also no state death taxes.
After this, we flit over the border into Vermont, where the cows outnumber the people. Look up “Woodstock, Vermont” – this pristine old town is straight out of a photography book, there are dozens of photogenic old covered bridges in town and we can stop at Simon Pearce’s Glassblowing Studio to watch as master craftsmen create crystal glass goblets, wineglasses, candlesticks, and more. We can have lunch alongside a strong, running river, visit arts and crafts shows, see working farms, country fairs, watch apple-pressing, or visit vineyards to taste samples – there is so much to see and do here!
We can then head back to Boston the long way, through southern Vermont and western Massachusetts, stay a night in Pioneer Valley in Massachusetts (look up “Old Deerfield, MA”), and on our last day visit a quaint little red schoolhouse where Mary Sawyer went to school – she’s the Mary in “Mary Had a Little Lamb”.
Ordinarily we stay at Bed & Breakfasts, but can stay at hotels or motels to keep costs down – and usually these tours last between 4 and 6 nights. These tours are limited, so it’s first-come-first-served. The vehicle we bring depends on the size of your group, the number of days we’ll be gone, and the amount of luggage.

This tour, this week, has expanded my understanding of the history, geography and culture of the New England area: a place where both my mother and father were born and raised. I felt proud to have family member from here. So many wonderful memories I bring back to Seattle. Thank you so much for all of your hard work and your tireless dedication!
The group gelled immediately and continued to be a very happy tour. No disagreements, no awkwardness just a really enjoyable time and the guide and driver were fantastic. Highly recommend to any other solo travelers.

Our Customers Rave About Us
We rented every seat on the boat for an extended family ride (children, teens and adults) and it was AMAZING! The captain was so knowledgeable and his first mate was super friendly and helpful! The boat is super clean with a private bathroom, the seats are comfy and really neat in their saddle-back style with grip bar. Initially I was a little nervous about the kids being safe, but once on the boat - I realized there was not reason to be. We cruised by many other boats as some of their guest looked on enviously. Highly recommend for a fun time for all ages!
We had a beautiful time on the water, saw about 8 whales (many of which the Captain, Gary, recognized and referred to by name…Patches, Pinball, etc.) as well as a couple of sharks and roughly a gazillion seals of two varieties. Also, it was the first time we had ever been on a RIB boat and it was amazing. Fast, super stable, and dry as a bone. Many thanks to Captain Gary for sharing so much knowledge and giving us the best tour any of us can remember. We’ll see you next year!
We had such a blast, and the crew were attentive, fun, and hilarious. They took great care of us, and created a memorable and awesome experience. I was already planning on which friends to bring next before we even got back to the dock. Thank you so much!

New England's Fall Foliage (Classic, 8 Days)
I was hoping we'd stop more so that I could take more pictures of foliage but overall I enjoyed all that we did. Brigette is a great person, with a fantastic personality.
Boston Cape Cod & The Islands (Classic, 8 Days)
Cons: 1. Daniel Webster Inn was over-rated. Would not stay there again. 2. Visit to the Plimouth Plantation was a waste of time. Spent way too much time there. 3. Transportation from Logan Airport to the Boston Hyatt was a mess!!!! No signs, no directions, and the taxi driver had no idea what to do with the voucher. Ended up paying for the taxi! Ridiculous!! 4. Service at the included dinner at the Daniel Webster Inn was horrible!! Kathy (our waitress) should be fired! However, the food was delicious! 5. Not enough time spent in Nantucket. 6. Way too much time spent at the Breakers in Newport. 7. This should not be considered an 8-day tour. All we did on day 8 was ride on the bus to the airport! Pros: 1. Tour director Robin was outstanding!! Wellness director, Brittany, was also fabulous! 2. Canolis, Cape Code Chips and Cape Codders on the bus was a nice touch! Thoroughly enjoyed the snacks on the bus! 3. Ferry to Martha's Vineyard was fun! Thoroughly enjoyed the talk session/information about the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association. Very interesting. 4. Local guide tour of Nantucket Island was great! Lots of interesting information. Not enough time spent in Nantucket. 5. Loved the Harbor View hotel! 6. Sailing on the Adirondack II was THE BEST!! Need to offer more than one Mimosa! 7. Luggage service was great.

If you can tear yourself away from your elegant digs, head off campus to one of the region's numerous apple orchards or sugarhouses for a maple syrup tasting. Time your visit for fall to explore nearby Pisgah State Park's vibrant foliage, or travel during the colder months to see the inn transform into a winter wonderland.

Another great place to hang your hat in Jackson is The Inn at Thorn Hill & Spa, a regal property with a wine cellar and a library. Favorite New England Fall Foliage Tours
Ready for some leaf-peeping but not sure where to go? One of these guided New England fall foliage tours may be just what you need.

Quiet country roads and idyllic Vermont farms like this one are often on the itinerary of a New England fall foliage tour.
One of the best ways to experience the autumn landscape is via one of the many New England fall foliage tours that roll through the region each year. For a story in Yankee ’s September/October 2017 issue ( “Leaf People” ), I took a New England fall foliage tour with Tauck Tours, which has been leading guided visits to the region in fall for more than nine decades. Tauck is considered by many to offer the best New England fall foliage tours, but it’s far from the only company with such excursions. Read on for a selection of great New England fall foliage tour operators.
Tauck Tours
It’s not an overstatement to say Tauck invented the New England foliage tour because, well, it sort of did. In 1925, Arthur Tauck, a 27-year-old traveling salesman, decided to share the beauty he often discovered while motoring along the region’s back roads. He advertised his guided tour in a local New Jersey paper, pricing his one-week excursion, which included all meals and accommodations, for $69. Six people signed on for the journey, and a business was born.
Today, Connecticut-based Tauck leads tours all over the world. But its New England fall foliage tours continue to be one of its biggest draws. Tauck offers several choices. Its 12-day “Grand New England” provides an in-depth portrait of the region, from Revolutionary War sites in Concord and Lexington , Massachusetts, to a weather lesson atop New Hampshire’s Mount Washington , to a full-on lobster experience in Portland, Maine. A more condensed version of this journey is offered in Tauck’s eight-day “Hidden Gems of New England” tour.

Another ten-day tour option includes the Vermont side of Lake Champlain.
Caravan Tours
On this eight-day guided journey, travelers hit many New England highlights: Boston, Plymouth Rock , Martha’s Vineyard, the Newport mansions, Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, the Norman Rockwell Museum in the Berkshires, picture-perfect Woodstock, Vermont , and a Maine lobster dinner.
Northeast Unlimited Tours
Over the course of eight autumn-themed days, travelers on the “Taste of New England” tour cover a lot of ground and sample a lot of delicious local food, from Boston and the Berkshires to the historic downtown of Manchester, Vermont , to a trip up Mount Washington on the famed Cog Railway and a lobster cruise in Maine.
