How long can you stay in a visa-free country?

In most cases, NZ passport holders can stay in the countries marked in green for up to 90 days . There are, however, exceptions:

Visa Exempt Countries for New Zealand Citizens

Visa on Arrival (VoA) or Electronic Visa (eVisa)

Several countries (e.g., Indonesia, Maldives, and Qatar) require all NZ passport holders to obtain either a VoA or an eVisa. How do they work?

• Visa on Arrival: VoAs are granted for tourists upon arrival at your destination. Simply go to a designated immigration officer, hand in the required documents, and pay a fee. Remember to examine which documents you must show to obtain a VoA, as it varies depending on the country. Usually, you’ll need a valid NZ passport, a return ticket, and a  booking confirmation

You do not need a visa to visit New Zealand if you are:

• A New Zealand citizen travelling on a New Zealand passport or on a foreign passport that has a New Zealand citizen endorsement
• An Australian citizen travelling on an Australian passport
• A foreign passport holder with a valid visa for New Zealand - including a Permanent Resident visa

If you plan to visit New Zealand for a short period, you need to request a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (opens in new window) (NZeTA) before you travel if you are:

• A citizen of a country which has a visa waiver (opens in new window) agreement with New Zealand (you can stay up to three months)

If you don’t meet the above, then you’ll need a visitor visa. The fastest and easiest way to apply for a visitor visa (opens in new window) is online.

Before travelling to New Zealand, you need to make sure your passport is valid for at least three months longer than your expected departure date.

Working holiday visas (opens in new window) are available to young people, usually aged 18-30 (but 18-35 for a select few nationalities). They let you travel and work in New Zealand for up to 12 months, or 23 months if you’re from the UK. To apply you’ll need to meet the visa requirements, and have:

Arriving in Aotearoa New Zealand

Everyone entering New Zealand needs to complete a  New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) (opens in new window)  including babies and children.

It’s free and you can complete it on the NZTD website or by downloading the NZTD app ahead of your travel.

You can start your NZTD at a time that suits you. If arriving by plane, the earliest you can submit your declaration is 24 hours before you start your trip to New Zealand. An NZTD needs to be submitted by the time you reach New Zealand passport control.

If arriving by boat (including cruise ships), the earliest you can submit your NZTD is 24 hours before departing the vessel’s last foreign port prior to arriving in New Zealand.

It needs to be submitted by the time the vessel has berthed at its first port in New Zealand. ​

If you apply for a visa or NZeTA, you still need to complete an NZTD (opens in new window) .

The form is available in English and Te Reo Māori, as well as simplified and traditional Chinese Mandarin. 

From April 2024, the form will be in 12 more languages: Hindi, Samoan, Fijian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Tagalog, Tamil, Tongan, and Portuguese.

What you can bring into New Zealand

After you’ve cleared passport control, you should collect your baggage and proceed through customs and biosecurity checks. In order to protect New Zealand and its environment, certain items are not allowed to be brought into the country, have restrictions for entry or must be declared if they are deemed to present a biosecurity risk. These include food, plants, animal products and outdoor recreational equipment.

Your baggage may be sniffed by a detector dog and/or x-rayed, and it may be searched to identify any risk goods you might be carrying.

First and foremost, an arrangement exists with Australia allowing most Kiwis to live, work and study indefinitely here. You will automatically be issued a special category visa 444 by the Australian government when you enter through.

The expiry date is on the photo page of your passport. If your passport is due to expire in less than a year, you may need to renew your passport before you travel.

A passport is required for travel to all countries, including Australia. If you are planning to travel and your passport is due to expire in less than a year, you may need to renew your passport. Some countries require that your passport has at least six months validity remaining after your intended departure from the country you are visiting. Check with Embassies of the countries you are planning to visit for validity requirements. You should also make sure you have at least one clear visa page in your passport for immigration stamps. Your passport should be signed. Signatures are not required if the passport holder is unable to sign or is a child under 10 years.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade does not issue passports.

How do I get a passport in New Zealand?

The Department of Internal Affairs issues passports. Their website provides information about passports, and application forms .

How do I get a passport overseas?

Only the Passport Offices in London, Sydney or New Zealand can issue a passport.

In an emergency, a New Zealand Embassy overseas may be able to issue an Emergency Travel Document (ETD).  Please note this service is not available through our offices in Austria, Barbados, Iraq, Niue, New Caledonia, Myanmar, Timor-Leste, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia or Poland.   People requiring assistance in those locations should go to http://www.passports.govt.nz/ for further information on applying for a standard New Zealand passport.

In addition our offices in Guangzhou and Honolulu are not able to issue Emergency Travel Documents, however an ETD can be obtained from Beijing and Los Angeles.

How do I get a visa for another country?

You should check with your travel agent or with the Embassy or High Commissions of the countries you intend to visit or transit to find out their visa / entry requirements and if you need to apply for a visa. You should do this well before your planned departure date to ensure you have the correct visa. The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade can not provide this information. If you do not have the required visa, you may be refused entry to a country. Having a visa does not necessarily guarantee entry into another country; this decision rests with immigration officials.

Tips for keeping your passport secure

Make a note of your passport number, take a photocopy of the personal details page, and keep this separately from the passport.

• keep your passport in a secure place
• don’t carry your passport in your pocket
• have an additional means of photo identification to carry with you
• never hand your passport over as a guarantee
• if your passport is lost or stolen overseas, report it to the police and then contact the nearest New Zealand Embassy.

Working Holiday Schemes

Working Holiday Schemes are reciprocal arrangements that allow people aged 18 to 30 years, who are not accompanied by children, to spend up to 12 months on holiday in the host country. Australian Visa on Arrival for New Zealand Citizens

ETIAS for New Zealanders

Although citizens of New Zealand can currently visit the Schengen Area without travel authorization for short stays, this will change in 2025 when the online ETIAS visa waiver is implemented.

ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization that will become mandatory for New Zealand passport holders who wish to travel to any of the countries in the Europe Schengen zone in 2025.

An approved ETIAS visa waiver for New Zealand citizens is a multiple entry travel authorizatio n which permits travel to all of the Schengen countries for up to 90 days with each entry, within every 180-day period.

An approved ETIAS authorization for New Zealanders is valid for a total of 3 years from the date of approval, meaning there is no need to submit an online application before every trip to Europe. It permits the traveler to enter the Schengen Area for purposes of business, tourism, medical treatment, or transit .

To travel to Europe for other purposes and longer periods, NZ passport holders will be required to apply for the relevant visa from a diplomatic office of the individual country of destination.

Can I Travel to New Zealand Without a Visa?

Technically, there is no New Zealand “travel without visa” offering for non–New Zealand passport holders.

• A valid passport
• A return ticket to a country you are allowed to enter (a one-way ticket will not be acceptable)
• Sufficient funds to support your stay in New Zealand
• A completed arrival card, obtainable at the airport, declaring good character and an acceptable standard of health

If you cannot meet any or all of these requirements, you should apply for a visitor visa before you travel to New Zealand, as you may not be allowed to enter with a visa waiver (even if you have an NZeTA).

If you are passing through Auckland International Airport on your way to another country, you do not have to apply for a visa if you are from a transit visa waiver country.

Those countries include: Bahamas, Bermuda, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Federated States of Micronesia, Indonesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Palau, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Republic of Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Thailand, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Venezuela.

It’s not always possible to obtain a visa on arrival in New Zealand, but passport holders from visa-waiver countries and territories can apply in advance for the NZeTA.

If you are a New Zealand citizen traveling on a foreign passport, you’ll need an endorsement of your New Zealand citizenship. It’s a record that allows passport holders who are New Zealand citizens to enter New Zealand as citizens although they are traveling on a foreign passport.

There are different types of New Zealand visas depending on your reason for visiting.

If you are a citizen of a country that has a visa-waiver agreement with New Zealand and plan to visit for a short period, you need to request a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (also known as an NZeTA or New Zealand ETA) before you travel. An NZeTA permits travelers to stay up to three months.

What New Zealand Visas are Accepted?

Depending on the VISA-FREE country, any of the below New Zealand visas can be used.

• Visitor Visa (tourism, business, academic, etc)
• Work Visa (talent, accredited, etc)
• Student Visa (exchange, fee-paying, etc)
• Residence Visa (Skilled migrant, permanent residence, etc)

Refer to each country below for permitted New Zealand visas. Some countries require the New Zealand visa to be multiple-entry and have been used at least once to travel to New Zealand.

Are New Zealand e-Visas accepted?

New Zealand is moving towards issuing only e-Visas. Whether or not a country accepts New Zealand e-Visa is completely dependent on that country’s immigration being familiar with New Zealand’s Visa Verification Service (also called Visa View).

New Zealand’s Visa Verification Service (Visa View) is the official portal to verify the validity of New Zealand e-Visas. However, using this service requires prior consent from the visa holder. Also, a RealMe account is necessary to log into Visa View portal. 

That means, it not only takes time but also requires consent from the visa holder and RealMe credentials to verify a New Zealand e-Visa. 

Countries with friendly and patient immigration officers may adapt to using online systems to verify the authenticity of electronic visas. As of now, it’s difficult to say if you can gain a smooth VISA-FREE entry into the below countries with a New Zealand e-Visa. 

01. Malaysia (Currently suspended)

• Permitted New Zealand visas: All valid used/unused multiple-entry (or used single-entry) New Zealand visas
• Permitted New Zealand PRs: All valid New Zealand residence visas
• Entry granted: 120 hours (5 days)
• Visa is NOT EXEMPT but are eligible to obtain Transit Without Visa (TWOA) at the VOA counter
• TWOA is free of charge, valid for 120 hours (5 days), single-entry only
• TWOA is available at Kuala Lumpur Airport (KLIA1 and KLIA2 terminals) only
• TWOA is available only if flying with Malaysian Airlines, AirAsia or Malindo Air
• Must be in transit to reach New Zealand as the destination. Must hold a confirmed onward eTicket or original boarding pass to New Zealand within 120 hours. (Exception for longer-term pass holders such as work visa, student visa, etc. who can depart to any third country)
• Issuing of TWOA is at the discretion of the immigration offices at Kuala Lumpur Airport

• Permitted New Zealand visas: All valid used/unused single/multiple-entry New Zealand visas, except transit
• Entry granted: 96 hours (4 days)
• Visa is NOT EXEMPT but are eligible to obtain Visa Free Transit Facility (VFTF) upon arrival
• Must be traveling to or from the country of passport. Example: Must be traveling to a third country from India via Singapore or traveling to India from a third country via Singapore. An example itinerary would be India-Singapore-Bali or Bali-Singapore-India.
• Both arriving and departing flights in Singapore must be on the same itinerary
• New Zealand visa must be valid for at least 1 month at the time of arrival

• Eligible Nationalities: All nationalities (except these 23 countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cameron, Cuba, Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Senegal, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Uzbekistan and Yemen)
• Permitted New Zealand visas: All valid used/unused multiple-entry New Zealand visas, except transit Permitted New Zealand PRs: All valid New Zealand residence visas
• Entry granted: 30 days
• Must be traveling to/from New Zealand through South Korea
• New Zealand visa or residence permit MUST be a sticker in the passport (NZ e-Visas are NOT accepted)

• Permitted New Zealand visas: All valid/expired used/unused multiple or single-entry New Zealand visas, except transit
• Permitted New Zealand PRs: All valid/expired New Zealand residence visas
• Entry granted: 14 days
• Visa is NOT EXEMPT but are eligible to apply for ROC Travel Authorization Certificate online
• ROC Travel Authorization Certificate is free of charge, valid for 90 days, multiple-entry
• If using an EXPIRED New Zealand visa or PR, it must have expired in the last 10 years only

• Eligible Nationalities: All nationalities
• Permitted New Zealand visas: All valid New Zealand RESIDENT visas such as student, work, etc.
• Entry granted: 60 days
• Visa is NOT EXEMPT, but are eligible to apply for Thailand e-Visa online
• E-Visa fee is 40 USD, valid for 90 days or 180 days, single or multiple-entry
• Must submit proof of residence in New Zealand such as driver’s license, utility bill, etc.

06. New Zealand (of course!)

Includes New Zealand territories: Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau. 

Cook Islands and Niue are VISA-FREE for all nationalities. But flights to these two islands are only through New Zealand, so a visa for New Zealand is required. If you hold a New Zealand visa, you can not only travel to New Zealand but also to its territories Cook Islands and Niue.

• A3 Visa fee is QAR 100, valid for 30 days, single-entry only
• Must provide hotel booking for the entire stay reserved through the Discover Qatar website
• New Zealand visa or residence permit must be valid on the day of the A3 Visa application

New Zealand visa is not as powerful as other visas, but it does come with a few visa-free countries. As of 2024, there are 13 VISA-FREE countries you can visit with New Zealand visa. The challenge with New Zealand visas is that they are mostly electronic visas. Airline staff and immigration officers must know how to verify the validity and authenticity of e-Visas on the New Zealand Visa Verification Service portal.

Entry requirements.

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in New Zealand set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the New Zealand High Commission in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering New Zealand.

Passport validity requirements

To enter New Zealand, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. If you’re travelling through another country on your way to or from New Zealand, check the entry requirements for that country. Many countries will only allow entry if you have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

You do not need a visa to enter New Zealand if you are a visitor staying less than 6 months. You do need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority ( NZeTA ).

At New Zealand border control, you will also need to show that you meet the criteria for visa-free entry:

• proof of a return or onward ticket
• proof that you have enough money for your stay

New Zealand has strict immigration rules, particularly on employment. Visitors cannot work in New Zealand.

New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority ( NZeTA )

If you are entering without a visa, you need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority ( NZeTA ) before you travel. You will also need to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy when you apply.

Allow up to 72 hours for it to be processed. Your NZeTA is valid for up to 2 years.

Applying for a visa

Check the visa options and costs on New Zealand Immigration .

To extend your visa, first check your visa expiry date on the New Zealand Visa Verification Service . See further information from New Zealand Immigration on how to apply for a visa extension .

Travelling through New Zealand

You will need to get a NZeTA before you travel if you are travelling through New Zealand to another country.

In most cases, transit passengers must hold an NZeTA or transit NZeTA before travel.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s New Zealand guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of New Zealand. It is illegal to import most food products. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Some products, including wood products, golf clubs, footwear, tents, fishing equipment and items made from animal skin, can carry harmful pests or diseases. Check what items you are permitted to bring into New Zealand . If in doubt, declare items to a Biosecurity New Zealand official or dispose of them in one of the marked bins available at the airport.

If you break any of these rules you could get a fine of up to 100,000 New Zealand dollars or a prison sentence.

New Zealand tightens visa rules after migration hits ‘unsustainable’ levels

Net migration to New Zealand hit a near record high in 2023 after a new temporary work visa was introduced after the pandemic

New Zealand will tighten its visa rules for some migrants as the coalition government moves to overhaul the immigration system it says has led to “unsustainable” levels of migration.

Last year, annual net migration to New Zealand hit a near record high of more than 173,000 non-New Zealand citizens in the year to December, Stats NZ reported .

Immigration minister Erica Stanford announced on Sunday changes to the accredited employer worker visa (AEWV), the main temporary work visa, which was introduced in mid-2022 to help fill workforce shortages after the pandemic.

The government’s changes to the scheme would include introducing English-language requirements for low-skilled jobs and setting a minimum skills and work experience threshold for most employer work visas. The maximum continuous stay for most low-skilled roles will also be reduced to three years from five years.

The changes would be immediate, she said.

“The government is focused on attracting and retaining the highly skilled migrants such as secondary teachers, where there is a skill shortage,” Stanford said in a statement. “At the same time we need to ensure that New Zealanders are put to the front of the line for jobs where there are no skills shortages.”

New Zealand, which has a population of about 5.1 million, has seen a rapid growth in migrant numbers since the end of the pandemic, raising concerns last year that it was fanning inflation. A Reserve Bank-commissioned report released last month into the possible links between migration levels and inflation was inconclusive.

Stanford said the changes would also reduce the vulnerability of migrants to exploitation.

In February, the Public Service Commission released its review of the AEWV scheme, which former immigration minister Andrew Little ordered after complaints of exploitation. The commission found that a small number of “unscrupulous employers” targeted the scheme and took payments from people wanting to move to New Zealand.

“By having an English-language requirement migrants will be better able to understand their rights or raise concerns about an employer early,” Stanford said.

The government had scrapped plans to add 11 new roles to the Green List – a list of highly skilled roles that New Zealand is struggling to fill – including welders, and fitters and turners.

Neighbouring Australia, which has also seen a big increase in migration, has said it would halve its migrant intake over the next two years.

The United States is experiencing a touch of sociopolitical instability — perhaps karma for the nation's history of interference in other countries ' politics ? — that is putting its people on edge.

Not everyone has the means to prepare an exit plan, but the wealthy Americans who do, are. They've started acquiring second passports to other countries through so-called golden visa programs, which allow wannabe residents to establish residency through investment.

Here are some of the top countries they're eyeing if they need to make a break for it.

Portugal is one of the top destinations for Americans seeking a second passport, executives from the citizenship brokerage firm Henley & Partners previously told Business Insider .

Americans can become residents after five years through Portugal's golden visa program, according to Henley & Partners .

However, Portuguese authorities know their passports are in high demand. The government recently added restrictions to its Golden Visa Program, removing an allowance that buying property in Portugal could offer a path to citizenship, Reuters reported . Hopeful future residents can still leverage the program by investing in the country in other ways.

Malta is another top choice for wealthy Americans. They can acquire residency through a mixed capital investment (meaning it could be a financial or property investment).

Malta's residency program offers the ability to live in Malta indefinitely, as well as monthslong access to most of Europe without a visa, according to Henley & Partners .

While few of Henley & Partners's clients actually move abroad, they said they find comfort in having the option available to them, the firm's Dominic Volek previously told BI.

Greece is another top destination for wealthy Americans — as well as another nation that is increasing the price tag on its golden visa.

In February, government officials announced they would raise the investment price to 800,000 euros (about $859,308) for its most popular islands, Reuters reported .

The change came after the nation already raised the property investment requirement from 250,000 euros to 500,000 euros in 2023 for tourist-heavy cities and islands like Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini, Reuters reported.

Some Americans seeking an additional passport have landed on Italy's residency program. The program requires a "significant contribution to the country's economy," according to Henley & Partners .

To obtain the right to live and work in Italy, investors must be ready to pay anywhere from 250,000 to 2 million euros (or up to $2,148,560).

New Zealand

Some of the mega-rich have set their sights on New Zealand , such as tech mogul Peter Thiel, CNBC reported .

While Henley & Partners ranks New Zealand as one of the top 10 most desirable countries for a second passport, that document comes with a steep price tag.

Would-be residents should be prepared to shell out between $5 million and $15 million New Zealand dollars — or between $2,987,275 and $8,961,825.

New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA)

Some people can use an NZeTA to travel to New Zealand without applying for a visa first. This depends on your passport, how you are travelling and if you are visiting or only transiting.

Visitor Visa

People travelling on a passport from some countries must apply for a Visitor Visa to visit New Zealand. You can stay for up to either 6 months (multiple entry) or 9 months (single entry). You cannot work, but you can study for up to 3 months.

Visa Waiver Visitor Visa

People from visa waiver countries can visit New Zealand for short periods without first applying for a visa but, from 1 October 2019, you must hold an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority).

Group Visitor Visa

A group travelling to New Zealand for the same purpose and with the same travel arrangements can apply for a Group Visitor Visa.

Pitcairn Islander Visitor Visa

Pitcairn Islanders can visit New Zealand for up to 6 months.

Critical Purpose Visitor Visa

You could apply for this visa if you had a critical purpose for coming to New Zealand while the border was closed due to COVID-19.

Argentina Working Holiday Visa

This visa is for young citizens of the Argentine Republic who want to work or study while they holiday in New Zealand.

Austria Working Holiday Visa

This visa is for young citizens of Austria who want to work or study while they holiday in New Zealand.

Belgium Working Holiday Visa

Brazil Working Holiday Visa

This visa is for young citizens of the Federative Republic of Brazil who want to work or study while they holiday in New Zealand.

Chile Working Holiday Visa

China Working Holiday Visa

This visa is for young citizens of the People's Republic of China who want to work or study while they holiday in New Zealand.

Croatia Working Holiday Visa

This visa is for young citizens of the Republic of Croatia who want to work or study while they holiday in New Zealand.

Czech Working Holiday Visa

This visa is for young citizens of the Czech Republic who want to work or study while they holiday in New Zealand.

Denmark Working Holiday Visa

This visa is for young citizens of Denmark who want to work or study while they holiday in New Zealand.

Estonia Working Holiday Visa

Hungary Working Holiday Visa

This visa is for young citizens of Hungary who want to work or study while they holiday in New Zealand.

Ireland Working Holiday Visa

This visa is for young citizens of the Republic of Ireland who want to work or study while they holiday in New Zealand.

Israel Working Holiday Visa

This visa is for young citizens of the State of Israel who want to work or study while they holiday in New Zealand.

Italy Working Holiday Visa

This visa is for young citizens of the Italian Republic who want to work or study while they holiday in New Zealand.

Japan Working Holiday Visa

This visa is for young citizens of Japan who want to work or study while they holiday in New Zealand.

Korea Working Holiday Visa

This visa is for young citizens of the Republic of Korea who want to work or study while they holiday in New Zealand.

Latvia Working Holiday Visa

Singapore Work Exchange Programme Visa

This visa helps young people from Singapore come to New Zealand for some work experience. You can apply if you are a citizen of Singapore. You will need at least NZD $2,250 to live on while you are here.

Child of a Worker Visitor Visa

If you have a work visa or you’re applying for one, you can apply for your children who are 19 and under to come to New Zealand as visitors. Your children can stay in New Zealand for the same length of time as your visa.

Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa

Parents and grandparents can visit family in New Zealand multiple times on the same visa, for up to 18 months in a 3-year period.

Crew joining a Ship or Plane Visitor Visa

Crew members can enter New Zealand to join a vessel or aircraft that will then depart for another country.

Child of a Student Visitor Visa

If you have a student visa, your dependent children can come to New Zealand as visitors. They can stay here for the same length of time as your visa allows.

Parents and legal guardians can visit New Zealand to live with and care for their children who are studying in New Zealand.

Partner of a New Zealander Visitor Visa

If your partner is a New Zealand citizen or residence class visa holder, you can come to New Zealand as a visitor. Depending on how long you have been together, you may be able to stay here for up to 2 years.

Transit Visa

If you are passing through New Zealand as a transit passenger, you need to apply for a Transit Visa before you travel, unless you are travelling to Australia or are from a visa waiver country or a transit visa waiver country.

Business Visitor Visa

You can come to New Zealand for business reasons for up to 3 months in any one year.

Medical Treatment Visitor Visa

You can come to New Zealand for medical treatment or consultation you’ve been accepted for. You’ll need to be able to pay for your treatment, or have it funded under a special arrangement for citizens of South Pacific countries.

Partner of a Worker Visitor Visa

If your partner has an appropriate work visa, you may be able to come to New Zealand as a visitor. If you are granted a visitor visa, you will be able to stay for the same length of time as your partner.

Private Yacht or Plane Visitor Visa

You can travel to New Zealand on a private yacht or aircraft.

You can escort a patient who's coming to New Zealand for medical treatment or consultation.

Culturally Arranged Marriage Visitor Visa

If you have recently married a New Zealand citizen in a traditional arranged marriage, or want to marry in New Zealand, you can get a 3 month visitor visa to begin living with your partner.

Visiting Media Visitor Visa

This visa is for people taking part in the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise or New Zealand Tourism Board's Visiting Media Programme.

Super Yachts Visitor Visa

Owners or crew on super yachts can travel to New Zealand.

Partner of a Student Visitor Visa

If your partner has a student visa, you can come to New Zealand as a visitor. You can stay here for the same length of time as your partner. You can study for up to 3 months with this visa, but you cannot work.

Temporary Retirement Visitor Visa

If you are 66 years or older and want to invest in New Zealand, you can apply to stay for up to 2 years. To apply, you will need an annual income of NZ $60,000 plus NZ $750,000 to invest for 2 years, and another NZ $500,000 to live on.

Trafficking Child Victim Student Visa

We may grant a visa to a child if they are certified by New Zealand Police as a victim of people trafficking. This visa can help them to leave an exploitative situation and study as a domestic student at primary or secondary school in New Zealand.

If you’re a New Zealand citizen or resident any of your dependent children who aren’t New Zealand citizens or residents can join you in New Zealand as visitors.

Antarctic Traveller Visitor Visa

Apply to transit through New Zealand to work in Antarctica for a Contracting Party as part of a scientific programme or expedition under the Antarctic Treaty.

Academic Visitor Visa

You can visit New Zealand as an academic and participate in teaching, educational, professional management or research activities.

Adoption Pre-citizenship Visitor Visa

Children adopted from other countries can visit New Zealand, before their New Zealand citizenship is confirmed.

Adoption Visitor Visa

Children can come to New Zealand to be adopted by New Zealand citizens or residents. The adoption must have the support of Oranga Tamariki - Ministry of Children.

Arts and Music Festival Visitor Visa

Performers and their immediate support crews can visit New Zealand to take part in approved arts and music festivals.

Dismissed Worker Visitor Visa

Apply for this visa if you have a current work visa and you were dismissed from your job during a trial period. You can stay up to 3 months, but you cannot work.

German Law Student Visitor Visa

German law students or graduates can visit New Zealand as unpaid observers with New Zealand law firms.

Occupational Registration Visitor Visa

You can apply for this visa if you want to come to New Zealand to obtain New Zealand occupational registration. You can also apply if you are already in New Zealand, have applied for residence, and need more time to obtain your occupational registration.

Refugee Claimant Visitor Visa

We may grant you a visitor visa if you are a refugee or protection status claimant who is in New Zealand, while you wait for a decision on your refugee or protection status claim.

Short-term Entertainment Act Visitor Visa

Performers and their immediate support crew can apply for a visitor visa to perform in a short-term live entertainment act, in New Zealand. To apply, the entertainment act must be promoted by a promoter on our Approved Promoters List.

Sports Events Visitor Visa

This visa is for sports people, support staff, match and tournament officials, and media and broadcasting personnel visiting New Zealand for sports events or tours.
