Looking for some really interesting things to do in Cozumel with kids? You’ve come to the right place!

I lived in Riviera Maya for almost a year with my family. We spent a fair amount of time day-tripping and weekending on Cozumel, so we found all the best spots to spend some time.

Cozumel is an island off the coast of Playa del Carmen in the Riviera Maya region of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It’s approximately 12 miles from the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

As the largest inhabited island in Mexico, it is roughly 30 miles long and 10 miles wide. While its size may sound overwhelming, there is a lot of undeveloped land on the island.

The lack of development does not mean there aren’t many things to do in Cozumel Mexico with kids , though! On the contrary, as we quickly discovered, one day will not be enough to finish your Cozumel family vacation wish list.

Top Activities in Cozumel with Kids

1. wander around centro.

There is so much to do in Cozumel with kids that it’s tempting to zoom off as soon as you arrive at the ferry or cruise port. However, the downtown area (called Centro) also has a lot to offer.

👉 If you want to ensure you see all the best sights in Centro, this tour provides exactly that along with a tasty lunch!

Every town in Mexico has a zocalo (aka: town square). The zocalo in Cozumel is called Plaza del Sol. It’s a scenic spot to shop for souvenirs. There are several popular restaurants in town as well.

2. Museo de Cozumel

The newly renovated museum has 11 interactive rooms with cutting-edge technology. Displays are posted in both English and Spanish. Visitors can discover Cozumel’s culture, history, and biocultural heritage.

The museum tells a fascinating history you won’t find anywhere else from who conquered it in the 1500s to how Abraham Lincoln tried to buy it!

It also has displays about the island’s history with Carnivale as well as ancient artifacts found on the island, what the island is made of, and local history about the Mayan people.

Whether you’re popping in to escape the heat (the AC is excellent) or want to engage in a bit of worldschooling , the museum is a fun and interactive experience for the whole family.

An Instagrammer hotspot, the landmark is located adjacent to the passenger ferry terminal. It is a beautiful monument to the coral reefs. It has two scuba divers diving the reefs as the water sprays down from above.

3. Visit the Coral Reefs Monument

The divers are surrounded by fish and sea life. All around the sculpture, there are various animals along the bottom and up it.

At night, it lights up and the adjacent fountain changes colors. The best time to visit is at dusk because the sun sets right behind the monument. Get there early for a good seat!

4. Take a Photo of the Cozumel Sign

Like every town in Mexico, there is a rainbow sign with the name in the Zocalo. There are actually two Cozumel signs, but the one in the Zocalo is easier to get to and easier to photos of.

The downside is that also makes it very popular. Especially later in the day, it can be difficult to get a photo without at least a couple of strangers in there.

The *other* sign is on Avenida Rafael E. Melgar/Highway C-1, the main street that runs along the entire east side of the island. It’s south of Centro, just a bit north of the cruise ship terminal. Keep an eye out for it on the ocean (southbound) side of the street.

Like much of the Yucatan peninsula, Mayan culture is actively celebrated on Cozumel. Despite their civilization disappearing over 2,000 years ago, its history is taught and shared with anyone who is interested to explore it.

There are several really cool ways to learn about Mayan culture on Cozumel. These experiences are what actually prompted us to visit!

5. Chocolate Making Class

David and I made chocolate during a visit to Nicaragua , but that was before having kids. Plus, different parts of the world have different ways of making chocolate.

Since Little Man is a chocoholic, we knew that a chocolate-making class had to be on our itinerary. When visiting Cozumel kids will love this activity!

After a quick tour showing us the history of Mayan chocolate making, you get escorted to a private outdoor ‘classroom.

Our teacher was really accommodating to Little Man and taught us about the symbolism of each ingredient that went into our chocolate.

From peeling and hand-grinding your own cacao beans to choosing how sweet of chocolate you want to make, the class is fun and interactive for the whole family.

6. Kun Che Park

👉 Kun Che Park is a theme park that celebrates all the things that make the Mayan culture so captivating.

Now that Discover Mexico Park is permanently closed, Kun Che is one of the top educational experiences in Cozumel with kids.

Visitors can watch the famous Mayan ball game (Pok To Pok) and explore local foods like tamales and tortillas.

Enjoy cultural fiestas and folklore dances during meals. They offer various packages to suit different budgets and timeframes, including transportation and a visit to nearby Cedral town with a cute gift shop and Mayan ruins.

Smaller than San Gervasio, they are nestled between homes and shops in town.

7. Mayan Bee Sanctuary

👉 While you can just show up at the sanctuary, it’s better to book in advance so you won’t have to wait for a tour to be available.

Mayan bees are truly special because they are stingless. This means you can get close to them and their hives without risking injury.

They are the perfect way for kids and adults alike to learn more about how integral bees are to the global ecosystem.

We learned a little bit about these magical creatures during our Mayan Cacao Company tour.

However, our guide even told us he learned everything he knew from the owner at the Mayan Bee Sanctuary. When we told him we planned to visit, he said we wouldn’t regret it. He was right!

During the tour of the sanctuary, we got to see several types of beehives. It was a really neat experience to have bees swarming around us without feeling at all nervous. Little Man was full of questions.

He loved being able to sit and watch the bees at their hives. Watching the bees actually guard the hives was truly a unique moment for all of us.

My favorite part was the honey tasting at the end of the tour. It’s darker and has a much different flavor than traditional bee honey. You can even buy some of their honey on-site, which I definitely recommend doing!

8. San Gervasio Mayan Ruins

While not as vast as the more popular mainland sites, like Chichen Itza , the San Gervasio ruins have their own magical feeling.

This may be because the archaeological site was one of the premier Mayan pilgrimage sites in all of Mesoamerica. It was dedicated to the worship of Ix Chel, the goddess of childbirth, medicine, and weaving.

Although ruins aren’t always the most exciting thing for kids , this site adds a bit of adventure for families. It has a lot more trees around than Chichen Itza and Tulum.

So kids who’ve seen an adventure film, like Dora the Explorer or even Indiana Jones, can pretend they’re in their own movie as your family strolls through the site.

☑️ Enjoy Cozumel Water Sports

It’s an island, so of course, at least some aquatic Cozumel tourist attractions need to be on your list of things to do with kids in Cozumel, right? These are our favorites!

9. Go Diving (or Snorkeling)

Cozumel is home to some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in Mexico. However, scuba diving is only something that families of older children (12+) can do if certified.

Since Little Man wasn’t old enough yet, on any of our visits to Cozumel, that wasn’t part of our explorations.

👉 Families traveling to Cozumel with kids over 12 should certainly consider going Discover Scuba diving or getting certified there.

Alternatively, if your family has young kids that can’t safely swim in deeper water , then scuba diving may not be a good activity. Never fear, though!

Parent Tip: Keep scrolling for other underwater family friendly activities that don’t involve swimming.

10. Snorkeling with Sea Stars

Along with some of the best scuba diving in Mexico, Cozumel also offers amazing snorkeling offshore. A day trip to the three best reefs is a wonderful adventure for any water-loving family .

👉 The best way to see El Cielo, Panacur, and Columbia reefs is on a guided tour .

Panacur has a wide variety of sea life, Columbia has colorful fish, and El Cielo has starfish laying on a pure white sand bottom. Each place is truly unique.

Many tours for snorkeling Cozumel with kids allow children as young as three or four to participate because the water surrounding the reefs is fairly calm.

As long as younger kids are comfortable floating in a life vest in water where they can’t touch the bottom, they should find the experience to be a lot of fun.

When Little Man was three and four years old, he simply held on to one of us adults while he floated and watched the fish. He’s pretty fearless, though, so each family should decide their comfort level with this type of activity.

11. Snorkeling at Money Bar

If getting on a boat isn’t your thing, it’s still possible to enjoy snorkeling on Cozumel with kids. Money Bar isn’t a swanky drinking establishment. It’s a waterfront restaurant with a small beach that allows guests to snorkel right from the shore!

If you don’t have your own snorkeling equipment (we do), then it’s available for rent from a hut adjacent to the restaurant’s dining area.

We had lunch and then stored our stuff in the car while we snorkeled. Although other guests left their stuff at their table, I wouldn’t recommend doing that if possible to avoid someone walking off with your belongings.

Cozumel is one of the safest places in all of Mexico, but why tempt fate?

During water excursions Cozumel Mexico, I store our essentials in a waterproof waist pouch. It’s one of the best Amazon purchases I’ve made.

👉 I love this waist pouch . It triple seals before rolling down to velcro shut. After 2+ years of regular use, I’ve had no problems.

In all honesty, the food was overpriced and just mediocre. The snorkeling was mostly just fish. Avid snorkelers who’ve been to some really amazing places might find it a little boring. However, Little Man had an absolute blast!

Afterward, we were able to take a cold freshwater shower and then pop into the restrooms to change our clothes. It was really nice not to have to get back in our rental car all wet! Overall, the staff were friendly and the snorkeling was fun.

Note: I do not recommend Dolphin Discovery Cozumel, or any of their other locations. Authentic experiences with wild animals, like swimming with whale sharks , are much more ethical.

12. Cozumel Pearl Farm

The Cozumel Pearl Farm is the only active pearl farm in the Caribbean. Only accessible by boat, it’s the best-kept secret on the island of Cozumel.

Owned and operated by a local family, this beautiful location at the north end of the island has remained pristine. It offers visitors gentle breezes, clear turquoise waters, coral reefs for snorkeling, and a white sandy beach.

During the tour, you walk the farm facilities to learn about how they cultivate pearls. You even get to snorkel at the hatchery, which has a life-size Virgin of Guadalupe underwater statue and some beautiful natural reef formations.

After snorkeling, you visit the farm’s sandbank while a local chef grills pineapple for a tasty afternoon snack. Adults can even enjoy a cold beer under a beach palapa. The rest of the afternoon is left for relaxing.

Whether you spend it lying in a hammock, swimming in the ocean, or playing in the sand, it’s a perfect day for parents who want to enjoy a special day on Cozumel with kids.

☑️ Relax at a Beach Club

Whether you want to spend all day chilling in a lounge chair or prefer to relax for a few hours after a morning out adventuring, Cozumel has excellent beach clubs. Many have much better amenities than the ones in Playa del Carmen , too!

13. Paradise Beach Club

This beach club is on one of the best stretches of sand on Cozumel. There’s also a huge palapa in the middle of the pool that provides shaded pool time. It does not disappoint!

👉 This all-inclusive pass to Paradise beach Cozumel provides unlimited food and drinks at two restaurants.

You can also get food and drink delivered to your lounge chair while sitting at the heated pool or on the beach.

In addition, there’s a huge inflatable obstacle course available to guests as well as select non-motorized watersports, like stand-up paddleboarding. Plus there’s free wifi and freshwater showers.

14. Mr. Sanchos Beach Club

This is the most popular beach club Cozumel has to offer. This means it can get a bit hectic during the high season when multiple cruise ships are in port.

👉 With their all-inclusive pass , you get access to all their amenities in addition to unlimited food and beverages all day long, too.

However, it consistently gets high reviews so clearly, they know how to provide good service regardless of how busy they get!

In addition to relaxing on the beach in a hammock or lounge chair, visitors can also enjoy the inflatable obstacle course. If beaches and saltwater aren’t your things, then hang out at the pool or the pool bar while the kiddos swim.

Unlike some other beach clubs, lockers are included here. Wifi, showers, changing rooms, and restrooms are also available to all guests. Even ocean kayaks are included in the access pass!

15. Mia Grand Beach Park

Playa Mia Beach Club is popular with families because it has excursions in Cozumel Mexico for kids of all ages. It’s one of the top things to do in Cozumel with toddlers!

👉 With an all-inclusive day pass , you don’t have to worry about meals or drinks all day long.

From zero-entry pools with a small splash park to a larger-than-life inflatable obstacle course off the beach, families in Cozumel with kids young and old will enjoy every moment here. There are even water slides, ice cream, and wifi!

This beach club and its kid-friendly Cozumel water park is a perfect end to a one-day itinerary on Cozumel for kids and families who don’t want to rent a car or hire a driver.

Wander Centro, take a morning chocolate factory tour/chocolate-making class at Mayan Cacao Company, and then stroll across the parking lot to Playa Mia. They are right next to each other.

You can either arrange to have the taxi that dropped you off come back at a set time to pick you up, or the beach club can call one for you when you’re ready to leave.

16. Punta Sur Eco Beach Park

While this isn’t the typical beach club experience offered at the clubs along the western shore, it’s still a fun time.

In addition to enjoying the beach on the southern tip of the island, visitors here also get to see a variety of wildlife. Punta Sur is an eco-reserve with over 1,000 hectares of protected land as well as a beach park.

Don’t be surprised if you see iguanas sunbathing or a crocodile in the lagoon! If you visit at the right time of year, you may even get to see some sea turtle nests on the beach!

In addition to relaxing on the beach, visitors can check out the Navigation Museum and explore the two lighthouses. But if relaxing on the beach is all you seek there are hammocks, restrooms, and showers to make the day easier.

There is so much more to do on Cozumel with kids than historical or swimming activities. So if that’s not your jam, keep reading!

From indoor, air-conditioned experiences to outdoor adventures, there truly is something for everyone to enjoy on the island.

17. Atlantis Submarine

Even if you do a snorkeling excursion on Cozumel, the Atlantis Submarine goes far deeper.

👉 The Atlantis submarine ride often sells out so prebook tickets in advance!

At 100 feet deep in Chankanaab Eco Marine Park, near Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park on Chankanaab Beach in Cozumel, you will see sights unlike any snorkeling excursion on the island.

The Atlantis Submarine visits the most colorful reef on Cozumel Island. You’ll even get to see 30-foot-tall corals!

In addition, there is an actual guide navigating the sub. They also explain the plants and wildlife you see out your window. It can finally be your opportunity to put names to all the different types of fish you’ve seen on other snorkeling adventures!

This 45-minute tour is limited to guests who are at least 3 feet tall *and* 4 years old. This age and height limit is for safety purposes and cannot be negotiated.

Pro Tip: Check your kiddos’ height before booking the tour to avoid potential disappointment.

18. ATV to Cenote

Until we experienced an ATV ride through a fruit farm in Malaysia with Little Man, we never would have considered ATVs a family-friendly activity.

👉 This ATV tour is perfect for adventurous folks in Cozumel with kids ages eight and up.

However, they’re stable enough on designated trails to be fairly safe. In addition, when driven at the slower speeds of a guided tour , they don’t feel dangerous at all. Little Man loves riding in front of his dad to feel like he’s steering!

After driving a path to an underground cenote, you get to jump or climb in for a refreshing swim. Then, you ride through a coral cave and even get to learn about some local Mayan culture.

Your kiddos will be having so much fun they won’t even realize they’re learning!

19. Private Sunset Sailboat Cruise

If you’re looking for a truly unique experience, enjoy the sunset on Cozumel from the deck of your own private sailboat.

👉 This luxury yacht has a perfect five-star rating on Viator and is a perfect way for families to unwind.

It allows for customized music and premium beverage options. The menu also includes local, handpicked food that is prepared fresh onboard. The catamaran even has wifi!

Even families of small children will enjoy this excursion. Since it’s a private sailboat, adults can put the youngest ones to bed downstairs while they enjoy a peaceful sunset upstairs. It’s a great option even for families in Cozumel with baby.

The sailboat holds up to 15 people, so don’t be afraid to book it with some friends!

20. Drive the Wild Side

Most of the development on Cozumel is on the west side of the island facing the mainland. However, there is a smooth highway circling the entire island.

👉 I recommend using Discover Cars for renting a car on your trip!

There are a number of beautiful beaches on the eastern side of the island. None of them have the beach club amenities of the western beaches. In addition, the waves are big and the tide is strong.

Family Tip: Families with small kids may want to skip trying to swim at west side beaches for safety reasons. Even the locals recommended we skip swimming there during our visit.

The only exception is Chen Rio beach on the southeastern shore of Cozumel. While it has big waves and strong tides, there are some small tidal pools along the beach where little ones can play more safely.

Whether you swim or not these rugged, eastern beaches are a beautiful sight to behold!

21. Cozumel Planetarium

Located around the corner from the cruise ship terminal, the Cozumel Planetarium offers some truly unique experiences for adults and kids alike. It’s one of the best indoor activities Cozumel has to offer!

From presentations in the digital dome to hands-on workshops for kids, it’s a great way to spend a little time learning about Mexican culture. They even offer a presentation on Mayan constellations from time to time!

Workshops are presented Thursdays-Saturdays to kids 5-12. There are extra fees included with these workshops.

Hours: 10 am – 6 pm Closed: Sundays & Mondays General Admission: Free Digital Dome Price: 200 pesos for adults 150 pesos for kids Workshop Prices: 30-50 pesos

Not all the workshops and shows are in Spanish. Check their website for the day you want to visit to confirm which experiences will be presented in your preferred language, Spanish or English.

Getting to Cozumel with Kids

Unless you’re planning to swim, the most common way to get to Cozumel is by boat. There are three main types of boat that people use to get to Cozumel.

It is also possible to fly to Cozumel. Some visitors fly directly to Cozumel from far-away cities on name-brand carriers like Southwest or Aeromexico.

However, it is also possible to fly there on small aircraft that leave from the local airports in Playa del Carmen , Valladolid, and elsewhere in the Yucatan peninsula.

⛴ Passenger Ferry

The most common way to get to Cozumel is by boat. Most people take a ferry from Playa del Carmen . Passenger ferries arrive at the main ferry pier closest to Centro.

The pier to the south of downtown near the lighthouse is used for vehicle ferries but not cruise ship passengers.

There are two main ferry companies that run between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel: Winjet and Ultramar. Their prices and amenities are similar.

Note: Pet owners may only sit with their animals in the outdoor seating area.

During High Season: Ultramar runs at the top of each hour and Winjet runs at the half hours. Don’t book round-trip tickets. This allows for more flexibility in your return in case the next ferry leaving is a different one than you took to get to the island.

During Off-Season : The ferry companies take turns running daily. Go ahead and buy a round-trip ticket if you’re only visiting for a single day.

🛥 Car Ferry

If you prefer to bring your car to Cozumel, there is a car ferry at the Calica cruise ship port . This is located a bit south of Playa del Carmen . It’s well-marked on highway 307 but it has a more limited departure schedule.

One-way fares are 500 pesos per vehicle. In addition, each passenger (including kids) costs 68 pesos for a one-way ride. Most people visiting Cozumel for a short trip simply rent a car on the island because the car ferry schedule is so limited.

The island of Cozumel is also a popular cruise port. Sometimes, multiple cruise ships are in port on the same day! If this happens, the quiet island can become very busy, especially in Centro.

There are three cruise ship piers to accommodate all the cruise ships during the high season. The closest is a five-minute walk from Centro and the furthest is five kilometers south of Centro.

People arriving by cruise ship to that pier will need to take a taxi up to Centro in order to wander around.

👉 Many people on cruise ships prefer to book a guided cruise excursion to see more of the island in just one day.

If you aren’t planning a guided excursion, though, there are still some amazing activities Cozumel offers for families on any budget.

Getting Around Cozumel with Kids

Cozumel is a pretty big island, so you’ll need a vehicle to go anywhere outside of Centro.

Unlike in Isla Mujeres , there is not a booming golf cart rental industry to enjoy. Instead, there are public buses and colectivos (shared-ride taxi vans common throughout Riviera Maya ) on the island.

However, none of them run outside the town of San Miguel de Cozumel where all the cruise and ferry docks are located.

Your only other options to explore further afield are to hire a driver or rent a car. Whenever we visited, we chose the latter option.

Not only was it more cost-effective, but it was also more flexible. This was key for us visiting Cozumel with kids.

We like being able to store all our stuff safely in the trunk. It’s also nice to be able to change our Cozumel itinerary at the moment if it suits us.

👉 This driver is an excellent choice to take you around Cozumel on a day trip!

Final Thoughts on Cozumel with Kids

Visitors on a day trip or cruise excursion won’t be able to do everything on our list in a single visit. There are easily enough Cozumel Mexico things to do with kids to keep a family busy on a one-week vacation!

Although we lived in Playa del Carmen , we found ourselves returning to Cozumel because it was just so much fun!

If you’re visiting Cozumel for a single day, it’ll likely be just enough time to convince you to return again for another adventure.

A glass bottom boat tour is a gentle yet exciting way to explore Cozumel’s stunning marine life with a toddler. Cruise along the surface of the crystal clear waters in an air-conditioned boat and peer through the transparent floor at the colorful fish and coral below.

Most tours make stops for snorkeling and beach time. Spacious boats with ample seating and washrooms cater well to little passengers. It’s an easy way to discover the ocean without any stress.

Kiddie pools have zero depth entries and mini water slides. Fountains, splash pads, and falling buckets of water provide endless amusement. Parents can watch comfortably from shaded lounge chairs.

Living here for years, I’ve come to see how great Cozumel can be for kids! Visiting kids and the cool little kids who live here ! There are many safe and fun family activities do do in Cozumel with kids, making it easy to find things to do on your family vacation. 

Cozumel is a safe and kid-friendly place for a family vacation, primarily due to its extremely low crime rate, friendly locals, and a wide array of family activities.  Cozumel has easy yet action-filled outings, and quaint cultural activities for kids to try, without the added stress. Whether your family is into snorkeling, outdoor sports, history, shopping, people watching, trying new foods, or just chilling out by the pool, you’ll find fun activities for your kids and your whole family in Cozumel.

1. Alebrije Treasure Hunt (DIY)

Alebrijes are delightfully colorful Mexican handicrafts. These painted animal forms, often made of wood or a form of paper maché, have a fantastical quality and represent spirit animals or guides to netherworlds.  

You and your kids might recognize them from the incredible Pixar movie, Coco .

Get your littles ready for their Cozumel adventure by watching Coco on the plane, and then keep an eye out for these magical little creatures featured in street murals and artisan shops, all over downtown San Miguel de Cozumel .

You can shop for amazingly intricate finished alebrijes at many pretty art and souvenir shops in the downtown Cozumel area, in and around Benito Juarez Park – the central plaza in town.  

2. Bee Sanctuary in Cozumel

Bees are all the buzz, and Cozumel now has a few bee-related organizations, too! This new one is really cute and a great experience for people young and old. 

The Mayan Bee Sanctuary on the Transversal Road (at km. 10) is open to the public and offers a neat education on bees, their importance to our ecosystems , beekeeping, hive rescues, and honey production.  

You can also taste various honey varieties, and take some with you to ward off allergies, sweeten your tea, or bring them home as unique gifts . Try the various honey candies and beauty products, too.

This is the type of thing I’d do more of if I had a kid to hang out with! Take advantage of touring around Cozumel with kids and get curious.

3. Chocolate Bars – A Cozumel Tradition

Learn the history and importance of Cacao (chocolate) in Mexico , from the Mayans up to today. 

There are several places on the island now that offer chocolate tours, including the chance for your family to hand-grind your own beans and craft them into a chocolate bar you can take home with you.  

These places also offer gift shops, tastings, and plenty of gifts and souvenirs (or snacks for your hotel!).  

Try the charming Kao Kao Chocolate Factory Tour in the Centro/Downtown San Miguel area, or if you’re staying in the Southern Hotel Zone, head for the Mayan Cacao Company’s tour near Playa Mia.

4. Discover Scuba Diving in Cozumel with Kids (Age 10+)

If your kids (or you!) are interested in diving, but not quite ready to commit to an Open-Water Certification course, a Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) class is a great way to safely try scuba in a very controlled way.  

DSD classes are run by fully certified instructors (be sure to confirm that!) and the ratio of students to instructor is intentionally kept very low to allow for careful attention and personalized teaching.  Try our favorite dive shop for scuba instruction – see here .  

By the end of your family’s discover scuba diving sessions in Cozumel, you and your kids (ages 10+) will understand how diving equipment should be set up safely, the basic safety precautions and maneuvers to know when diving, and your level of comfort when breathing underwater.  

From there, you can decide if you want to continue your studies, and move on to enjoying the full diving experience .  (We think you will!) 

5. Eating Tacos in Cozumel Like a Local

Everybody loves tacos, right?  Well, when in Mexico…you must try some delicious local Mexican tacos .  

Head downtown and sample some of your favorites, like chicken ( pollo ) or beef ( res , or arrechera ). But also be sure to try at least one of Mexico’s best – “tacos al pastor.” 

Tacos al Pastor are made with roasted pork, a little mild chile kick, and diced pineapple on top.  

Vegetarians visiting Cozumel can look for tacos frijoles (beans), nopales (cactus), or head to one of the other plant-based spots featured in this related post HERE . You can find other tacos filled with mushrooms, chile rellenos, and more. Yum!

6. Finding Clues around San Miguel de Cozumel

Families now have another great experience in recent years with Cozumel’s own Amazing Race . 

This activity is full of fun clue solving, friendly competition, and a good amount of walking (or running) around town.   

It gives kids and families the chance to see the downtown, meet some awesome local (bi-lingual) tour guides and clue-givers, and learn a little about the history of Cozumel – all while having some good, healthy fun. 

The Race winds up at a fun local outdoor restaurant, where teams can enjoy a cold drink and some snacks, and compare notes from the day.  

There is usually an (optional) snorkeling portion mid-way through so you can jump in and cool off.  Again – optional.

7. Get Your Mermaid On

Even if you don’t want to try scuba diving with your kids in Cozumel, they might want to pretend to live ‘beneath the sea’ from time to time. 

One lesser-known activity in Cozumel is the Mermaid Experience , with DeLille Sports.  

DeLille Sports is truly the best shop for learning to Kiteboard and SUP , so your more extreme sports lovers might prefer those.  But for the mermaid experience, they have a fun session. 

Meet at their shop, and get your kids sized and suited up.  And then make like mermaids, and hit the water.  Action mermaid photoshoots are available!

8. Hunt for Cozumel’s Crocodiles

Cozumel is sweet and safe, but don’t tell that to our resident crocodiles.  

There are indeed crocodiles here on the island, and occasionally they’ve been seen poking out of the jungles and mangroves where they live. 

But don’t worry – they don’t normally like saltwater, so you won’t see them at the beach or when you’re out diving.  (well, almost never…)  

But there are some places where you can see them on purpose, and see their amazing anatomy and slightly scary behavior.  

One of the best places to try and spot a Cozumel crocodile in the wild is at the observation tower at Punta Sur Eco Park , one of the public beach and nature parks, run by the municipality.   

At the far south point on the Island, Punta Sur Park also has a lighthouse museum where you can climb to the top, as well as a beach, a mangrove boat tour, and plenty of places to stop for a snack or to get Mom and Dad a cold one. 

9. Ice Cream, Cozumel Style

Need I say more? 

Cozumel has ice cream shops all over the place!   

All around town you’ll see shops called “Michoacana,” usually either painted orange or pink-and-white.  They are usually located on a corner.  Each is different, but all have a wide selection of ice creams, fruity popsicles, shakes, and smoothies.  

There are also a few pushcart vendors with hand-made ice cream in Benito Juárez park (central plaza with clocktower) – people rave about the homemade coconut ice cream cones.  

10. Jumping in the Cozumel Plaza Fountain

Parque Benito Juárez also features a dancing water fountain feature where kids of all ages love to cool off and play around.  Talk about a fun and free family activity on vacation! 

Join the local munchkins and let your little ones jump in and play around.  

There are plenty of shaded benches nearby to sit and keep an eye on kids – and the fun. And it’s also a great spot to do some serious people-watching in one of Cozumel’s many pleasant and safe public parks. 

11. Kite Surfing in Cozumel

DeLille Sports, as mentioned above, is a seriously cool and fun surf shop that teaches Stand-up Paddleboarding (SUP) and Kite-boarding in Cozumel .  Run by a Mexican wind-surfing champ, DeLille has a great staff and quality equipment to set you up right.  

Kite-surfing is not easy to learn, so book ahead for their multi-day package if you have a serious intent. Or let them start you out on a SUP, either for your first time, or experience boarders can take one of their specialty tours – including one at night , with lights on the bottom of your board.  

The kids don’t get to try that every day! 

12. Lighthouse Tours of Cozumel

There are historic lighthouses at the Northernmost and the Southernmost tips of Cozumel island. Pick one, or try to check out both!  

The lighthouse in the Northern point, called Punta Molas, is harder to access.  These days, your best bet is to join one of Cozumel’s new Lighthouse Project razor tours to the lighthouse .  

You can rev up the family activity meter and ride these fun off-road vehicles to get there and do some beach cleaning on the way, to give back to this precious environment.  

Once you’re at the lighthouse, enjoy some swimming, a snack, and the views. 

The South lighthouse, called “Celarain,” is within the grounds of the Punta Sur Eco Park, run by the Cozumel municipality.  

Punta Sur is an awesome way to spend the day, with the lighthouse just being one-stop (see above for more info).  

Climb to the top of Cozumel’s Celarain lighthouse for an amazing view, and learn about its working history in the cute museum on the ground floor.

13. Mayan Ball Game in Cozumel

Kids of all ages love seeing this reenactment of an ancient Mayan Ball Game , called “Pok-ta Pok” in the Mayan language.   

Demonstrated by trained historic performers in exciting and elaborate Mayan warrior garb , a large, hard rubber ball is moved around a walled court by the players’ feet, legs, and hips. 

It is thought by some to be the direct precursor to modern-day futbol, or soccer. 

Sometimes the city of Cozumel also puts on live demonstrations in the main central plaza, or you can book a day at the cultural theme park Kun Che in Cozumel , and see a live ball game as part of your daily ticket.   Book now !

14. Night Observation at the Cozumel Planetarium

Completed in 2016, Cozumel’s planetarium, named Cha’an Ka’an, is a sharp new facility in the southern hotel zone area . 

Cha’an Ka’an offers planetarium shows and a rotating program of evening movies in the dome .  They also have various observations at night or during special astrological events.

15. Open Water Scuba Class in Cozumel

If you’re a family of divers or aspiring divers, and your kids are at least 10 years old, you can start the process of becoming a certified Open Water Diver .  

Ideally, in our educated opinion, you should start the eLearning knowledge portion of the class at your local dive shop before you arrive. That way no one feels rushed, and you can make sure everyone is comfortable and taking the time to absorb all of the important information.  

But there’s no place like Cozumel to take or finish the open-water scuba diving class , or do your first “check out” dives for certification – or just your first certified dives as a proud, new C-Card holder.  

16. Pizza Party for the Family in Cozumel Beach

If you poke around our Food & Restaurant posts on the blog more, you’ll see that we take our pizza pretty seriously.  Luckily, so does Cozumel!  We love the local Mexican food , but every now and then crave something different, or a little more familiar. 

The good news for families visiting Cozumel with kids: there are now at least 10 solid pizza joints on the island – and that number is growing! 

So, no matter what style you like or where you’re staying, you can have a break from nachos and have a family pizza party any time you want.

Take your pick.  Most have dine-in and take-out options. 

17. Quintana Roo Park at Cozumel’s City Hall

Quintana Roo Park is a great park right in front of Cozumel’s “town hall”, El Palacio. 

The Park has a main bandshell area, famous for hosting the spectacular annual Carnaval competition events early each year, as well as the Independence Day party and fireworks (September 16th). 

This park also serves as the finish line and recovery area for the Cozumel Ironman in the Fall, and many other public parties and exhibitions, year-round.

Don’t miss it if you’re in town around Christmas time .   

There are also frequent street fairs with midway games and rides at this location , so no matter when you’re in town, take a peek or ask your hosts about what public events are going on in town that week.

Chances are, there will be some fun kid stuff in Quintana Roo Park. 

And if not, on regular evenings the park almost always has some family activities and locals there with their precious little ones playing on the playground, or trying out the pint-sized electric vehicles.  It’s adorable and open and free .  Make some new friends. 

18. Riding Electric Bikes Along Cozumel’s Shores

Electric bikes are a blast!

They’re very easy to learn for anyone who can already ride a bike, but you and your kids will still feel the thrill of going a bit faster on your fun glide along the shoreline and through some beach parks and trails.

And don’t worry – E-bikes are way lighter and far safer than a moto or moped .   They’re also one of our favorite eco-friendly outings to recommend on the island.

The first time I tried the Beach Bum Bikes tour of the East Side of Cozumel island , I was hooked.  (now I have my own e-bike, I liked it so much)  

Their friendly bilingual young guides ride with you the whole time, and there’s a support vehicle to make sure everyone’s bike is in fine riding shape.

They also have tours of Punta Sur Eco Park, which is my favorite of all the municipality’s beach parks, and it’s great for families – see the “Lighthouse’ entry, above!  Maybe it could be a combo.  

19. Snorkeling Heaven in Cozumel

Cozumel is nothing if not an amazing scuba diving locale, and if you don’t dive, snorkeling is the next best thing .  

There are many tours that include snorkeling, as well as boat outings l i k e t h i s o n e that can get you to some of the prime – but still shallow – reef sections a little farther offshore. 

If you’re staying at a resort or other water-front dive hotel , they’ll surely have snorkeling gear for you to try, and you can take an easy look around right off the beach.  

Or head to one of many beach clubs that have great snorkeling reefs. 

A large Cozumel-run beach and water park, like Chankanaab is good for an entire day packed with fun activities, definitely including some snorkeling.  

There are also smaller beach clubs that have good snorkel spots , and gear on loan .  Try someplace like Sky Reef or Corona Beach if you’re in the south part of the island, or Playa Azul in the north .  

Grab a beach-side lunch and then snorkel around to take a look at what critters you can spot in the clear blue waters just off the beach. 

20. Turtle Nesting and Hatching Program in Cozumel

The East Side of Cozumel island and the Punta Sur shores are wild and wonderful. One of their many special qualities is that these areas are the nesting sites for thousands of green, hawksbill, and loggerhead turtles every year. 

Starting in the late Spring, usually in May, mature turtles start to return to these Cozumel beaches and lay large nests full of turtle eggs. 

Each mother turtle digs a deep hole, lays her eggs, and then covers them up, in a painstaking process.  Then with no fanfare, she turns and returns right back into the ocean.  

Then, about 90 days later – so starting in August and going through September or October – these nests of eggs hatch.  

Clusters of tiny young hatchlings struggle their way out of the deep nest and then flipper and waddle their way down the sandy Cozumel shores, and right into the open surf. 

And off they go. 

The annual turtle nests are carefully marked, recorded, and monitored by Cozumel’s Department of Ecology throughout the whole season. 

Volunteers can pitch in at both ends of the process.  This may be the perfect family activity in Cozumel, if you’re here during the right months.  And you’ll be teaching the kids to appreciate nature and give back at the same time.  The fees to participate are really donations, used for their simple equipment, to pay the marine-bio staff, and keep this critical sea turtle program alive.  

Please, on that note : Volunteers are encouraged to seek out the official Ecology Department’s program if they’d like to help. Please don’t opt for a “tour” run by a cruise ship or other non-scientific entity.  Ask your hotel concierge for help contacting the Ecology Dept. and/or the Parks Department to reserve your spot.

21. Underwater Submarine Ride is Great for Cozumel with Kids

Maybe the kids aren’t ready for diving, or maybe you have no intention of breathing underwater.  At least not from a tank!  Well, what about aboard a submarine? 

The Atlantis Submarine is a local family favorite . It’s operated by a dedicated and experienced Cozumel crew and captain who’s been at the helm for years. 

Typically, there is an orientation session, and then an exciting ride down to see a deep reef wall and a nearby shipwreck.  

You can experience diving down along incredible coral formations, and of course have a chance to see some Cozumel marine life, including eagle rays , stingrays, nurse sharks , turtles, colorful tropical fish, and sometimes divers!  

I have seen the submarine come along a few times when I’ve been diving the shipwreck site!  It’s fun to wave! 

There aren’t age restrictions for the Cozumel submarine experience, but children must be at least 3 ft tall, to meet the size requirements of their safety equipment .

22. Voladores Fly High in Cozumel

The Voladores (meaning ‘flying men’) demonstrate a death-defying ritual dance from an ancient Meso-American tradition . But this dance is performed atop a tall “pole” towering at least 18 meters / 40 feet in the air (or higher).  

To the beat of a steady drum and flute melody, the voladores ‘fly’ in circles around this pole, attached by fabric wrapped around their waists and legs. Their fearless and graceful dance is done to honor the natural elements and appeal to the gods for fertile lands.  

You can catch them throughout the day at the beach in Playa del Carmen, or at Cozumel’s southern cruise pier area – both free of charge (times vary).  

Or as shown in the video, you can see this group as part of your entrance into Discover Mexico Park – which as a whole is a great way for a family to spend a few hours .  

There is a gallery of impressive artwork from across the country (including the alebrijes mentioned above), and other exhibits on Mexico’s history of architecture, and some fun activities to get hands-on.  

The Voladores also perform in the plaza near the southern cruise ports, and in the main park upon your arrival in Playa del Carmen, so if you go over to the mainland, you might catch them there, too.  

23. Wildlife on Land – Cozumel Mangroves & Jungle

Besides the crocodiles and marine life you’ll see either diving, snorkeling, or on the submarine,  Cozumel is known for land-based wildlife, too .  

Cozumel is a well-known spot for bird watchers , with records of hundreds of local and migrating birds being spotted, including the endemic Cozumel Emerald hummingbird .  

There are lots of large iguanas that you are sure to see around town, lazing in the sun.

Cute little gecko lizards that you will probably encounter on sidewalks, and maybe even on an indoor wall or two.

But be glad!  They help us keep the mosquitos at bay. 

There are other furry friends on land, as well.  Cozumel has wild deer, pigs, and small endemic raccoon-like animals called coati. 

Cozumel is known to have its own endemic coati, simply know as the Cozumel Island Coati.  

The coati can be seen all over, but are especially known to hang out at a lot of beaches along the southern shore of the marine park, like at Palancar Beach, Nachii Cocom beach club , and at Punta Sur Eco Beach Park (see above).

24. Xcaret Theme Park via Cozumel Ferry

If your family is in Cozumel for more than a few days, you might decide to take a ferry trip to the mainland at least once. Maybe just to see the Voladores in Playa del Carmen…or to go do some major shopping.   

For families with kids, one of the best reasons to cross over on the ferry to the “Riviera Maya” is the large theme park known as Xcaret .  

Xcaret park is a full day and evening’s worth of stimulating fun. Learn about archaeology and traditions in Mexico, from Meso-American customs through more modern history and culture. 

You’ll encounter exhibits featuring natural environments, like a coral reef aquarium or an aviary, as well as areas featuring music, art, and various dining venues. 

There’s also just pure vacation fun on underwater river rides, swimming and snorkeling in their lagoon waters, and more. In the evening, you can choose to stay for dinner and their cultural performance shows.  

Just be sure to leave enough time to catch the last ferry back to Cozumel !  

Or make your life a LOT easier and book ahead of time and reserve your tickets for Xcaret .

25. Yucatecan Food – Pride of Cozumel

Traveling often opens us up to regional food specialties, and the Yucatan Peninsula has some specialties that you have to seek out and try.  

Beyond the coconut ice cream and fresh fruits we’ve mentioned, there are certain foods that are specifically from the Yucatan . 

The region has an interesting food history, as its geographical position and history have led to a variety of cultural blends and culinary fusion .  

Cochinita Pibil is perhaps the most indicative of this cuisine and has become one of the most known and sought after. 

Basically, cochinita is a tasty and tender slow-roasted pulled pork specifically from the Yucatan, flavored and seasoned with a local twist of tart orange citrus tang and mild chile heat. 

Cochinita is a Sunday tradition in Cozumel , and delicious eaten as family-style tacos , loaded up on tortillas with pickled red onion and fresh cilantro.  

Or try the local chicken soup, Sopa Lima.  A nice simple soup and more familiar to kids, but with a nice bright kiss of fresh limas (closely related to the lime).  

There are also yummy little panuchos –  like pint-sized tostadas loaded with beans, cheese and various meats and toppings. Kind of like a new spin on nachos, and great for adventurous little hands.  

Finally, even if you have some shy or picky young eaters, most kids can’t turn their nose up at a fresh local street-food favorite – the “marquesita.”  

These made-to-order sweets are like warm, slightly crunchy crepes, filled with caramel, nutella, or fruit jams.  Look for a cart near El Palacio / Parque Quintana Roo, or down near the clock tower in Parque Benito Juarez.  

And if all else fails, don’t forget some Cozumel chocolate .  Or coconut ice cream.  

26. Zócalo, Where Cozumel Comes Alive  

In Mexico, due to a curious history of the original ‘zócalo” in the center of Mexico City , the word zócalo is the common word to reference a city’s main square in the center of town.  

Cozumel’s zócalo is the busy, central plaza officially named Parque Benito Juárez, after one of Mexico’s most famous and beloved presidents . 

(Trust me – now that you know, you’ll see his name everywhere ).  

For our last recommendation for traveling family activities in Cozumel? Just show up in the zócalo!

Whatever free time you have , when in doubt, take a walk around Juárez Park and just see what’s going on.  

Have a meal at Casa Denis, a famous Yucatecan spot that’s also one of the oldest restaurants in town. 

Catch some music at Woody’s.  Shop for your alebrijes or other beautiful handicrafts, like Talavera pottery, leather goods, or some of the island’s finest silver jewelry . 

Get that ice cream, jump in the dancing water fountains, take your picture at the iconic “Cozumel” sign.  

And then just hang out for a while. You’ll very likely catch a musical performance, and there are often local artists and craftsmen at work, demonstrating their art, and happy to show off their traditions .

People-watch all the different characters of daily life in town, or those arriving off of the ferry from the mainland each hour.  Watch the various boats come in and out of port. 

And if you’re lucky enough to be in town at the time of a seasonal holiday , like Christmas week, Carnaval (late February/Mardi-gras times), Mexico’s Independence Day (September 16th) or Mexico’s Day of the Dead (November 1-2), and many others, the zócalo will be especially alive with families and children enjoying Mexico’s regional decor and displays.

The Cozumel municipal cultural board sponsors lots of live shows in the Plaza square , as well. 

Weekly free concerts or dance performances are usually on the schedule – traditionally on Sunday evenings.

There are also frequently small street fairs in the Zócalo plaza , with handmade jewelry, arts and crafts, local honey or baked goods, and more. 

Also keep your eye out for non-holiday current events, like the Cozumel Ironman triathlons or the annual GFNY bicycle road race . 

When those races are on, the Plaza is typically a cool spot to watch the race or poke around at booths and tables with info and products for sale.  

Cozumel is a Family-Friendly Town

Cozumel is a great place for traveling families with kids because Cozumel is a lovely town full of working families with kids!   

You can feel it wherever you go.  

Take some time to just meander and visit in town and interact with other kids and local families – especially the zócalo. 

Give your kids the time to look around, notice the local people and their peers. Let them see and experience how they live and play.  And have them try some of their foods , cool down with a delicious Cozumel ice cream or gelato , and life cultural entertainment. 

Opening their eyes to new cultures and ideas is free, yet arguably the most valuable and memorable family vacation activity of the whole trip!

The official hotel zone in Cozumel is located north of the airport. However, you’ll be able to find hotels all through San Miguel de Cozumel’s Centro neighborhood, as well as Airbnb vacation rentals. 

Additionally, there are several higher end resorts found along the western coast of the island, including all-inclusive resorts. Check out these highly rated hotels and resorts you can book for your trip to Cozumel with kids.

InterContinental Presidente Cozumel Resort Spa

Cozumel is full of fun things to do for kids and families. From learning about the island’s history, to exploring the beautiful waters that surround the island, families will want to pack in as much as they can into a visit to Cozumel with kids.

As you’re exploring the many things to do in Cozumel with kids, be sure to brush up on some basic Spanish phrases for travel as well. This will make your experience in Cozumel so much more worthwhile.

1. Explore Centro

If you only have a few hours to visit, and are looking for something low-key to do in Cozumel for kids, take a stroll through Centro. The main city center is full of restaurants and shops where you can buy souvenirs and get a good meal.

Along the northern end of Avenida Rafael E. Melgar, you’ll find the Museo de Cozumel . This museum has exhibits showcasing Cozumel’s history. Admission to the museum is $9 USD for children over 3 years old and adults. 

The museum is open on Tuesdays to Sundays. Hours of operation are 9 am to 5 pm.

If you prefer to have a guide on your visit to Cozumel with kids, book this private tour of the island. Besides touring through Centro, your guide will take you to other highlights of the island too.

2. Spend the day at a beach park

A popular activity to do in Cozumel for kids is to spend a day at a beach park. Many of the beach parks have lounge chairs you can rent. And they offer swimming, snorkeling, diving, and massages, as well as food and drink.

Chaankanaab is a popular beach club that also has live dolphin and seal shows. Admission to Chaankanaab is $28 USD for adults, and $20 USD for children between the ages of 4 and 12. The park is open Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. Food, lounge chair rentals, shows, and activities cost extra.

If you want to splurge during your time in Cozumel with kids, you can also rent beach cabanas for the day at The Cabana Beach , which is adjacent to Chaankanaab. Cabana rentals cost $105 USD for the cabana, plus $17 per individual guest over the age of 3. Cabanas can accommodate a maximum of 6 people, so groups larger than that will need to book 2 or more cabanas. Along with the cabana rental, you have access to Chaankanaab park, and free snorkel gear rental.

Other well-rated beach clubs in Cozumel for kids include Paradise Beach , Mr. Sanchos Beach Club , and Punta Sur Eco Beach Park .

3. Snorkel experiences in Cozumel for kids

The beach parks in Cozumel all have options for snorkeling. The island is surrounded by coral, so you’ll usually be able to see fish and coral just by swimming off the shore.

However, the best snorkeling experience in Cozumel for kids and families is to visit Playa Palancar. At the Playa Palancar Beach Club , you can take a 2 hour snorkel trip to the deep water reefs.

Entrance into the beach club is $20 USD per person, and the trip costs $54 USD per person. The snorkel trip includes a guide who will take you to the Palancar, Columbia, and el Cielo reefs. You’ll see starfish, rays, and maybe even a sea turtle!

Everyone is provided a snorkel, a mask, fins, and a life vest. If your kids aren’t strong swimmers, there are life rings they can hold on to as they observe the underwater life. Remember to use reef safe sunscreen when you're snorkeling.

As an alternative, you can book one of these snorkeling tours around the island during your time in Cozumel with kids:

• Palancar, Columbia, and El Cielo reef tour
• Turtle sanctuary snorkeling tour
• Invisible boat snorkeling tour

4. Learn to dive in Cozumel with kids

Due to the many coral reefs surrounding Cozumel, the island is a great place to learn how to dive. If your children are over 10 years old, your family can take a dive certification course during your trip to Cozumel with kids through Cozumel’s many PADI dive schools.

Blue Magic is a great dive school for kids. Courses range from $145 USD for a 4-5 hour introductory scuba lesson to $456 USD for a 3-4 day open water dive certification course. More advanced courses are also available for experienced divers. 

If you’re already proficient in diving, the dive schools also offer equipment rental. The beach clubs also offer equipment rental for visitors. Take a look at this resource for scuba diving in Cozumel for more information.

For those who are brand new to scuba diving, an introductory diving lesson would be a great fit while you're in Cozumel with kids. While kids need to be at least 10 years old to get their scuba certification, they can be any age to do an introductory diving lesson. However, they should be strong swimmers and be able to follow directions.

5. Submarine ride in Cozumel for kids

If you’re not into snorkeling and diving, but you still want to see marine life, take the Atlantis Submarine tour while you're in Cozumel with kids. This is a 2 hour submarine tour that takes you as deep as 100 feet underwater.

Tours with Atlantis Submarine cost $115 USD for adults and $75 USD for kids. The tours are timed, so check the website to see which tours are available. You can also combine the submarine tours with other activities such as a Jeep tour, a snorkel expedition, or an afternoon at a beach club. 

Kids taking the Atlantis Submarine tour will be able to see various types of reef fish, rays, and sea turtles. The submarine also takes you to the edge of the coral reef, where the seafloor drops off to as much as 2,700 feet! Our kids were so amazed at all the sea creatures we saw on the submarine ride.

6. Explore things to do in Cozumel with kids on the east side

Most visitors to Cozumel stay on the western side of the island. But there are also fun things to do in Cozumel for kids along the island’s east side as well.

If you are looking for a relaxing day on the beach while you're in Cozumel with kids, Playa Chen Rio has tide pools that kids can play in. It’s also a good surf spot for those who enjoy surfing. Cozumel Surfing with Nacho offers surf lessons for individuals and groups of all abilities. You can also take surfing lessons at Playa Punta Morena with Machito Surf Lessons .

The water is much more choppier on the eastern side of the island than on the western side. Plus, you’ll need a car to get there. Alternatively, you can arrange for a taxi to pick you up at a pre-arranged time. The cell phone signal is not very strong on this part of the island, so plan accordingly. 

Additionally, while there are some restaurants along the beach, you won’t find the same beach amenities as on the island’s west side. If you’re planning a visit to the beach, bring along your own snacks and drinks.

As an alternative, you can take a guided e-bike tour of the eastern side of the island. That way, you won’t miss out on the must-see spots. This tour is ideal for families with teens, as the minimum height requirement is 5 feet tall.

7. Other activity ideas in Cozumel for kids

If you have more time on your hands while you're in Cozumel with kids, there are plenty of other things to do in Cozumel for kids that will keep them entertained and engaged.

If you want to explore an archaeological site in Mexico, visit San Gervasio . This was a sacred site for Mayans during the pre-Hispanic era. Families can also explore the agricultural-focused activities in Cozumel for kids with a visit to the Mayan Bee Sanctuary or the Mayan Cacao Company .

Basic Cozumel geography

Cozumel is an island located 23 kms off the eastern coast of Mexico. It’s part of the state of Quintana Roo, in the Yucatán peninsula. As of 2011, there are approximately 100,000 people living in Cozumel.

The main city in Cozumel is San Miguel de Cozumel, which has 77,000 people. Because of the coral reefs that surround the island, tourism is a very important part of Cozumel’s economy. Getting to Cozumel for kids and families 

For families coming to Cozumel with kids from the mainland of Mexico, the best way to get to Cozumel is by ferry. From Playa del Carmen, Winjet and Ultramar both offer ferry rides.

Fares cost between 290-360 pesos (roughly $14-18 USD) per person, one way, depending on the company. Check their websites for schedules and up to date fares. You can also purchase tickets online ahead of time, or at the kiosks at the ferry terminal.

If you’re coming to Cozumel by car, you can take a Transcaribe ferry at the Calica cruise ship port just south of Playa del Carmen. Fares range from 780-2,500 pesos per family car (roughly $39-125 USD), one way, depending on the size of the car. 

Going by plane is another option for getting to Cozumel for kids and families. Cozumel International Airport has limited flights from Mexico and the United States. Airlines that service the airport include United, American, Sun Country, Southwest, and Volaris. Look for flights for your trip to Cozumel with kids on Kayak .

Options for getting around Cozumel

As previously mentioned, the main city in Cozumel is San Miguel de Cozumel. The central part of the city is called Centro. It is located right at the ferry terminal. If you’re planning on mainly staying around Centro during your time in Cozumel with kids, it’s easy to walk around.

Taxis are available to help you get around Cozumel with kids, especially young ones. Within the city, fares are 50 pesos. If you’re going out to the beach clubs or other parts of the island, expect to pay at least 140 pesos.

For peace of mind if you're coming from the airport, you can pre-book a private shuttle from the airport to your hotel, so you don’t have to worry about the hassle of finding a taxi.

If you’re looking for other options for getting around Cozumel for kids and families, you can also rent a car. Avis has a rental office right at the ferry terminal. Their base rates range from $41-$132 USD per day, depending on the make and model of the vehicle. 

You will be able to find less expensive rates if you rent a car through a smaller locally owned rental company. There are many locally owned car rental offices located near the ferry terminal. Additionally, you can rent cars from the Cozumel airport.

Best restaurants in Cozumel for families

In terms of where to eat, Gastropark 140 is a great place in Cozumel for kids to explore different cuisines throughout Mexico. It’s located on 15A Avenida Sur, between Calle 1 Sur and Calle Dr. Adolfo Rosado Salas.

For a more seafood-focused restaurant that’s popular with locals, head to Coctelería La Estrella on 20 Avenida Sur. You’ll get local dishes like salbutes and tacos made with seafood like octopus and snails. And if you want to experience a sunset dinner, head to Sunset Restaurant and Bar on Avenida Rafael E. Melgar.

Money matters and basic costs in Cozumel

Mexico uses the peso as its currency. The paper bills come in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and sometimes 1,000. For coins, you’ll find 1, 2, 5, 10, and sometimes 20. At the time of this writing, the dollar-peso exchange rate is 20 pesos for $1 USD.

While Mexico is generally a cash economy, you can still use a debit or credit card (referred to as tarjeta ) at some restaurants and stores. Hotels and resorts will accept cards. And some attractions in Cozumel for kids, particularly the beach clubs, will also allow you to pay with a card. 

Major banks in Cozumel are Santander and Banorte. These banks have ATMs for withdrawing cash. Expect to pay between 35-40 pesos for the ATM transaction fees. To keep your cash secure, be sure to pack along a unisex travel belt that's compact and discrete.

In terms of planning for costs in your Mexico travel budget , the costs in Cozumel are on par with costs in most parts of Mexico. Lodging can be as little as $26 USD per night for a family of four, or as high as $800 USD per night. Food can range from 30 pesos per dish to upwards of 400 pesos per dish, depending on the restaurant.

The Ultimate List of Family Things To Do in Cozumel

Thinking of visiting the beautiful island of Cozumel with your family? Whether you’re in port for the day, or on the island for a week, there are plenty of family things to do in Cozumel with kids.

We just finished up a five day stay on the island. Between this trip and another visit a few years ago, we’ve found a lot to keep our family of four busy.

Fun family things to do in Cozumel

Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean sea that’s famous for some of the world’s best snorkeling and scuba diving, and it’s only a short 15 minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

This all means that there’s a lot for families to do in the area, whether you’re looking for beach fun, shopping, or exploring ancient Mayan ruins.

Find a beach

Two of the things that make Cozumel kid friendly are its beautiful climate and small beaches. With crystal clear water and white sand, beach time is probably the most affordable and fun thing to do with kids on Cozumel. Because Cozumel is such a relatively small island, it’s easy to reach most beaches from a great vacation timeshare.

If you have smaller kids, you’ll want to stick to the sheltered west side with its reefs to protect against crashing surf. Southern beaches like Playa San Francisco or Playa Palancar are a good choice.

With only a few decent beaches to choose from compared to nearby Playa Del Carmen, Beach Clubs are huge on Cozumel and they can be a lot of fun with the family. We had a blast at the typically touristy and fun Carlos and Charlies beach bar on our first visit to Cozumel.

Often there’s an admission charge for beach clubs, and you’re definitely expected to order food or drinks there if there’s not, however nearly all of them offer you a lounge chair and shade.

Water trampolines and water parks!

f your kids are big enough to enjoy them, there are some fun water trampolines at Mr. Sancho’s Beach Club on Paradise Beach, which is just down the beach from Carlos and Charlies beach bar.

Playa Mia Beach Club will also keep you and the kids occupied. There are water slides, kayaks, water toys, an on-water trampoline park, and the little ones will love Bucanneers Bay, which has a kids lagoon pool with a pirate ship, water spray-cannons and all the fun they can handle.

Snorkel or SCUBA dive

If your kids are too little, skip snorkeling and SCUBA in favor of beach time. That said, Cozumel is home to some of the best snorkeling and diving in the world. If your kids are old enough to snorkel, they’ll find an abundance of colorful fish and corals at Cozumel’s Mesoamerican Reef.

Older kids and teens will love snorkeling at the Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park, while smaller kids will likely do better snorkeling from shore somewhere like the Money Bar Beach Club .

We only snorkeled on our own in Cozumel.

San Gervasio Mayan Ruins

Despite its small size, Cozumel has an interesting Mayan site, the San Gervasio ruins. Check out the video below for a walk through the site.

Atlantis Submarine

Shop Plaza del Sol

Plaza del Sol is the zocalo (town square) in San Miguel, Cozumel’s only square.

There are plenty of souvenirs to be found in the streets around the Plaza del Sol, including hammocks, embroidered and lace clothing, silver jewelry, and little wooden toys for the kids. There are also plenty of places to stop for lunch or ice cream.

Kids will enjoy the street performers and musicians who are ever present in the square.

Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park

Chankanaab is located inside Cozumel´s National Marine Park. You can swim, snorkel in the lagoon at the Chankanaab reef, grab a snack and check out the exhibitions, spa or zip line. Cost is $21.00 USD  for adults and $14 for kids age 3 to 11.

Punta Sur Park Ecological Reserve

Punta Sur is Cozumel’s largest ecological reserve. It boasts a gorgeous white beach and reef for snorkeling as well as tons of wildlife on the lagoon side. In the lagoon you can see crocodiles, turtles and tons of birds including flamingos and there is a free pontoon boat ride available. The cost is $14 USD for adults, and $8 for children age 3 to 11. It’s open Monday to Saturday and there are change rooms, hammocks, chairs, showers, restaurants and even lifeguards on duty there. The Faro Celerain lighthouse is also at Punta Sur.

Faro Celarain lighthouse

One of Cozumel’s most iconic buildings, the Faro Celarain lighthouse is located in the Punta Sur ecological reserve. It’s included in your admission to the park and you can climb to the top for some of the best views on the island. It’s a bit of a climb though so make sure you and the kids can handle it. There are nearby hammocks at the bottom for those that prefer to wait for others in comfort.

Cozumel Pearl Farm

If you’re looking for something unique and memorable to do in Cozumel, a visit to the Cozumel Pearl Farm may just be it. This is around a six hour tour that gets stellar reviews, where you learn how pearls are made and farmed, with time to relax on a private beach, eat lunch and play in the water.

I only wish I’d seen this while we were in Cozumel. It’s a must-do for our next trip. Reviews say it’s good for small children, as well as older kids.

Cozumel Glass Bottom Tour

A glass bottom boat is a great alternative for those who don’t like to snorkel, or if you have little ones that are too young to SCUBA or snorkel. Viator offers a three hour glass bottom boat tour in Cozumel.

Drive around the island

If you have a little time on your hands, you can rent a car in town and see most of the sites above all in the same day. Prices for cars are decent and there is only the one ring road so it’s hard to get lost. The road only covers the south side of the island so if you want to see the northern end you either need to take a boat or rent some atvs. In both cases it’s better to take a tour.

For those on a more tight deadline, you can always hire a private driver that will take you around the island. Most cruise ship day tourers opt for this to make sure they’re back in time for departure. You can often just hire a taxi driver to take you where you want to go however the taxis aren’t metered on Cozumel so make sure you agree on the price before you get in.

Day trip to Playa del Carmen

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of Playa del Carmen, returning every couple of years to spend a month or two. It’s just a 15 minute ferry ride from Cozumel, with the pedestrian friendly Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) just in front of the ferry terminal. With plenty of shops and restaurants, there’s also many family friendly activities in Playa del Carmen itself, and lots of free things to do .

There are also miles of beaches right in town that are free and easily accessible for families with children.

Xcaret Theme Parks

While you’re in Playa Del Carmen, you may want to check out one of the parks in the Xcaret family, including Xcaret  itself ( our favorite for kids), Xel-ha  (where you can snorkel and swim to your hearts content), Xplor  (which has some fun ziplines, ATV tours and swimming), or the new and quirky Xsenses , which we loved.

Day trip to Tulum

While most first time visitors make a beeline for the Mayn Ruins at Chichen Itza or Coba, the ruins at Tulum are closer and are perched spectacularly at the edge of the Caribbean sea. Make sure you make time to visit the seemingly endless stretch of beach in Tulum , and nosh at some of the good restaurants on the main road through town.

Visit a Cenote!

The most popular cenotes (clear, natural, freshwater limestone pools) are located on the mainland near Playa del Carmen and Cancun. If you’re looking to visit one, blogger Anna Everywhere has a helpful article on the best centotes in Mexico  and we’ve visited more than a few ourselves including nearby Cenote Cristalino  and Cenote dos Ojos .

Generally, we prefer Playa del Carmen to Cancun, as we find Cancun to be more touristy, its beaches are rougher and the town less walkable. There’s no shortage of things to do in Cancun , but it’s a little trickier to visit Cancun on a budget .

That said, there’s a lot to do in things to do in Cancun for kids , and it can make for an exciting day out. Cancun is also a quick and easy bus ride from Playa Del Carmen and the main ADO bus terminal is only a few blocks from the ferry terminal.

Day trips to Coba or Chitzen Iza

Most visitors to the Mayan Riviera make a beeline for the famous Mayan Ruins at Chitzen Iza and the massive El Castillo pyramid.

We loved our time at the smaller, but definitely impressive Coba Mayan ruins. It was an incredibly important site for the ancient Mayans, and because it’s a little less known than Chitzen Iza, you can climb many of the pyramids with fewer other tourists around.

Viator has some fun tour options for both Chitzen Iza  departing from Cozumel and a fun looking tour that takes in cenotes, Coba and the ruins at Tulum .

What to bring

You can rent masks, snorkels, and fins at any hotel or beach club, or simply bring your own. We haven’t had a chance to try them ourselves, but we’ve heard great things about the adult full face Tribord EasyBreath mask  and the kids Cressi DELUXE Youth Mask Snorkel Set .

Most tour operators include children’s and adult life jackets, but inquire first to be sure.

Also make sure that you have waterproof sunscreen on hand if you go snorkeling. Xcaret and most of the nature reserves require you to use biodegradable sunscreen when swimming in the water however we haven’t loved the biodegradable sunscreen we’ve tried so far. Our friends swear by the  Badger Sport Sunscreen Cream  and it gets great reviews on Amazon so we’ll give it a try next.

Another great option for kids (and even adults) is to get a SPF 50 rash guard t-shirt like this one . We’ve used rash guard shirts on our kids for years and they’re so much easier to deal with rather than constantly applying sunscreen. Our kids love them and they’re great when snorkeling or even just hanging by the water. We plan to pick up one for ourselves when we get back for when we go stand up paddle boarding or kayaking.

When we’re in a beach destination, we also like to have two sets of swimwear for everyone. That way, one swimsuit is always dry, and we don’t have to deal with putting on a cold, clammy suit.

Most hotels and tour operators provide towels, though we carry a lightweight travel towel  that works as a cover up, towel, and a lightweight blanket for cold airplane rides. It also makes a great impromptu fort for the kids.

Cozumel, Mexico with Kids [CRUISE PORT GUIDE]

Located 12 miles off the northeastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Cozumel is Mexico’s largest inhabited island.

The island is rated one of the top diving destinations in the world thanks to the second largest coral reef in the world.

In addition to spectacular diving, Cozumel is also known for their white powdery beaches, thriving markets and restaurants and proximity to popular visitor sites like the Mayan (San Gervasio)  and Tulum Ruins .

Cozumel is a very popular port of call for Western Caribbean cruise itineraries.

There are over 3 million cruise ship passengers that visit Cozumel each year.

Currency:  Mexican Peso, US Dollar

Primary Language Spoken:  Spanish, English

Where Do Cruise Ships Dock?

There are 3 cruise ship piers in Cozumel – all of which are on west side of the island.

Punta Langosta is located in downtown Cozumel. Cruise passengers walk off their ship, cross over a pedestrian bridge into a shopping plaza which then leads out into the city (San Miguel).

The tourist information office is located at the end of the pier by the Punta Langosta shopping plaza.

International Pier is the island’s oldest pier and a 10-minute taxi ride from downtown San Miguel. The walk to downtown San Miguel is a pretty one as it’s along the coast line but it is a lengthy one – approximately 30 minutes.

Puerta Maya is 1/2 mile south of International Pier. Carnival Cruise Lines built this pier and is touted by some as a superficial replica of the real Mexico. Store and restaurant prices are inflated here to reflect the commissions the businesses pay cruise lines to be in this area.

When there are many ships in port, some will anchor outside Punta Langosta pier with tenders taking cruise passengers into Cozumel.

Getting Around Cozumel

Taxi / Taxi Van – There is no shortage of taxis around the three cruise docks. It’s the most economical way to get around Cozumel and many make multiple trips from the piers to popular tourist spots like Chankannab Park and the beach clubs that offer all-day resort/activity passes for cruisers. Just be sure to agree on a price before getting into the vehicle. All drivers are required show a rate card to show fares from the pier to popular tourist spots.

Car Rental – Car seats are not available in taxis or taxi vans so if you require one for your child, your only option is to rent a car and request a car seat. Most attractions and points of interest are close to all three cruise ship piers so if you are OK with holding your children in your lap like the locals do, it might be easier to take a taxi than renting a car.

Walking – If you’re not interested in visiting a tourist attraction or the beaches, you won’t need transportation to explore downtown San Miguel or the area around the three piers. There are plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants within walking distance of each of them.

Kid Friendly Beaches in Cozumel

Swimming, snorkeling and lounging on a beach chair is a very popular way to spend the day in Cozumel.

If you’re driving along the east or west coastlines, you’ll find many spot snorkel, swim or play in the sand. This can be done with no additional cost other than your taxi fare or rental car cost however there are no washrooms or change rooms, beach chairs or umbrellas to protect you from the sun.

For a small fee, check out these popular kid-friendly beaches near Cozumel’s cruise ports.

Paradise Beach –  For a budget friendly beach day head to Paradise Beach – only a 10 minute cab ride from the Puerta Maya and International Pier cruise ports. Expect to pay $4-5/person for a one way cab ride to the beach. ($4-5 USD/person one way).

Entrance to Paradise Beach is $3 with a $10 minimum food purchase (kids under 6 are exempt) and includes a beach chair, access to the swimming pool and of course the beach. For an additional fee guest can access the inflatable water park and water sports equipment. Bathrooms, showers, taxi stand, life vests and locker rentals ($4 USD/day) are other amenities available at Paradise Beach. The beach is a bit rocky in some areas so bring water shoes if you have them. Advance reservations are not required but this beach fills up quickly when there are several cruise ships in port.

Punta Sur Eco Beach Park – Located on the southern tip of the island, Punta Sur is the largest ecological reserve in Cozumel. Families can combine a beach day with some time exploring Cozumel’s wilder habitats.  Families can climb to the top of the lighthouse for a bird’s-eye view of the island or visit the lagoon to learn about crocodiles, iguanas, fish and birds.

Punta Sur Eco Beach Park is open Monday to Saturday from 9AM to 4PM and admission ($14 USD/adult, $8 USD/child 3 to 11 years old) includes access to the lighthouse, beach and a museum. Onsite amenities include restrooms, outdoor showers, restaurants, snack bars, on duty lifeguard, beach chairs, hammocks and snorkeling equipment.

Chankanaab National Park – Many cruise lines offer excursions to Chankanaab National Park and there’s a good reason for it. This national park packs a lot activities and entertainment in one space. It is open Monday to Saturday from 8AM to 4PM and admission is $21 for adults and $14 for kids (3 to 11 years old) . Guests get access to a beautiful man-made sand beach and can spend a few hours relaxing in a beach lounger, hammock or under the palapas. They also can spend some time exploring the reef, lagoon or botanical garden, watch the sea lion show or visit the crocodile exhibit.

There are bathrooms, change rooms and showers here for guests to use. Spa treatments, water sports and zip lines, and animal encounters with dolphins and manatees are also available for an additional fee. Restaurants, lockers and snack bars are other amenities offered here so make sure you remember to bring some extra cash with you. It is recommended you arrive before 11:30AM as beach chairs and hammocks go very quickly here.

Beach Clubs are Cozumel’s answer to providing a beach experience with extra amenities – think aquatic parks, splash pads for kids, all you can drink and eat packages,  water sports and horseback riding tours. You’ll find many of them lining the oceanfront and almost all taxi drivers can recommend which one would be best for your family. The most popular family-friendly beach clubs are:

Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park –  For families looking for a bit of everything – walking trails, zip lines, aerial obstacle course, sea lion and dolphin shows, snorkeling, learning about Mexican and Mayan culture and time at the beach – Chankanaab Park may be worth a visit. Admission is $21 for adults and $14 for kids (3 to 11 years) and includes complimentary use of life vests, access to the reef, lagoon, botanical garden, eco-arqueologicial tour, crocodile exhibit and sea lion show. Fees apply for additional water sports and animal encounters. The 10 minute taxi ride from port to Chankanaab is approximately $15 one way for a family of four. Recommended length of visit – 3 to 4 hours

San Gervasio Ruins – Learn about the Mayan goddess Ixchel and explore Cozumel’s only archaeological site at San Gervasio. Located about a 30 minute drive from the cruise ports, San Gervasio is populated with iguanas, lush flowers and foliage. It is generally very hot here so make sure you pack your sunglasses, hat and sunscreen in your day bag as well as a bottle of water. Visitors can buy purified water at the entrance of the ruins.  Recommended length of visit – 1 to 2.5 hours

Atlantis Submarine – Perfect for non-swimmers, the Atlantis Submarine allows visitors to experience Cozumel’s incredible coral reef without getting wet. Learn about tropical fish, sting rays and other aquatic life during your tour. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise passengers are eligible for a special rate and other cruisers who book online in advance receive a 20% discount. Recommended length of visit – 1 to 1.5 hours 

Chocolate Factory Tour – For an educational and fun tour, head to the Kaokao Chocolate Factory (approximately 10 minute cab ride from port) and sample and learn how to make chocolate from scratch. Tours run 6 times a day with a limit of 12 people per tour. Tours are approximately one hour long and cost $15 per person. Be sure to book your tour in advance and if you’re interested in a private tour with just your family, that can be arranged as well. Recommended length of visit – 1 to 1.5 hours

Explore San Miguel On Your Own – Walking around Cozumel’s largest town is a great family activity when you don’t want to head to the beach or book a tour. It’s very safe explore on your own and Plaza Central and Plaza del Sol (the town square) offers opportunities to learn about the history and culture of the island. Grab some ice cream or head to one of the many restaurants near the cruise port. Shop for souvenirs, Mayan handicrafts or silver jewelry.

Where to Get Free WiFi in Cozumel

There are several restaurants and cafes in Cozumel that offer free WiFi for paying customers – including Starbucks near the Punta Lagosta cruise port and Margaritaville near the International Pier.

It’s hard to travel to Mexico with kids and pass up on a prime opportunity to learn about the indigenous peoples’ cultures. While Mexico is home to many indigenous groups, the most notable from the Caribbean coastal region were the Maya. Pueblo del Maiz is a local attraction in Cozumel that showcases some of the most notable aspects of Mayan culture in a way that is fun and digestible for kids and adults alike.

On a visit to Pueblo del Maiz, you can expect to play ancient ball games, watch live performances, create your own chocolate from raw cacao, and roll your own tamales. The staff is incredibly friendly, and they do a great job of bringing Mayan culture to life.

Pueblo del Maiz is located just a short 10-minute drive from the island’s main square. Entrance fees vary by season but are very affordable compared to some other attractions on this tourist-centric island. There is no need to make a reservation in advance.

Try Local Food in the Central Square

One of Mexico’s proudest international claims to fame is its cuisine. Mexican food can be found all over the world, but the best is served right on the streets in any Mexican City. Cozumel’s main street foods are representative of what you’d find in cities all across the states of Quintana Roo and Yucatan, which make up the Yucatan Peninsula.

Eating street food in Mexico is safe, so long as you take basic precautions. It’s best to only eat meat that is served warm, and you should avoid salads when possible. The best approach is to stick to fruits and vegetables that you peel, when possible, as any contaminants tend to be on the skin and not the fruit.

Some foods you won’t want to miss in Cozumel are esquites, churros, and tacos. Churros are fried dough covered in cinnamon sugar, and a good churro is life-changing. Esquites is essentially corn sliced off of the cob, stewed in broth and herbs, and served in a cup with a range of toppings including cheese, salsa, and cream.

For a special treat, ask the vendor to put the esquites in a bag of Doritos along with the toppings of your choice. Like a meatless walking taco, these “Dori-esquites” are a hidden secret of Mexican street food, and there are great vendors right in the central square of Cozumel.

Explore at Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park

Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park is one of the most popular venues on the entire island. This park is equipped with beach access with private cabanas, restaurants, a spa, and a great diving center. In addition to these, there are excursions that allow visitors to swim with manatees, sea lion performances, playgrounds, and more.

Entrance into the park is pricey by Mexican standards, but generally affordable by international standards. Adult tickets cost $26, while children’s tickets cost $19. All children under the age of 3 are admitted for free.

The park is located just a short drive away from the island’s main city center and the cruise port. Most guests that go to Chankanaab spend a half day or longer there, and you could easily spend a full day enjoying this park’s various amenities.

Have Fun at Playa Mia Grand Beach Park

While Chankanaab is a great place for adventure, Playa Mia Grand is one of the best places for pure fun and relaxation in Cozumel. This park is packed with great activities for children, from a 200-foot waterslide to pools to floating jungle gyms and more. Playa Mia Grand claims to have one of the biggest private beaches in all of Cozumel, and the water is immaculate.

For parents, the park also offers all-inclusive packages for drinks and food, as well as various spa packages. This place is a load of fun for the whole family, and tickets start at around $35 per person at the time of writing.

Dive Underwater with the Atlantis Submarine Tour

If you’re looking for a dose of adventure but aren’t able to take your kids scuba diving, the Atlantis Submarine Tour might be a great option for you. This exciting tour takes you and your family 100 feet below the Caribbean Sea, where you get exclusive looks at some of the exotic marine life around the island. The submarine excursion is considered to be very safe, with a highly experienced crew available onboard at all times.

The submarine adventure is suitable for all kids above the age of four, but no kids younger than that are allowed onboard. Similarly, pregnant women may partake up to the 6th month of pregnancy.

The total time that you spend underwater on the tour is about 45 minutes, but there is additional time involved to get from the land to the submarine. In total, you can expect your experience to last about two hours, and the memories to last a lifetime.

Relax at Playa Chen Rio

Cozumel is known for having some of the best beaches in all of Mexico. As a Caribbean island several miles off the coast of the mainland, its beaches are raw, pure, and stunning.

The beaches on the west side of the island, which is the side facing the mainland, are the most crowded. This is where the majority of the beach clubs are, and it is the most developed area of the island.

The island’s east coast is a sight to behold, though. While the sound of raw, virgin beaches is boring to some families who prefer large waterparks, it is equally exciting to others. Playa Chen Rio is one of the best beaches in Mexico, and there’s a good chance you won’t even see anyone else there.

This area doesn’t get great cell phone reception and doesn’t have many amenities to offer, but the pure beauty of the nature is otherworldly. If you decide to spend a day at Playa Chen Rio, consider taking your own food and drinks so that you don’t need to leave early.

Additionally, if you don’t have your own car, ask your taxi driver if he’d be willing to come back and pick you up at a certain time. Sometimes, very few cabs pass through this area.

Learn About Chocolate at the Mayan Cacao Company

Did you know that chocolate is originally from Latin America? While some of the world’s best chocolate nowadays comes from places like Belgium, Switzerland, and the United States, the true origin of chocolate is in Mexico. Mayan people and other indigenous groups created chocolate thousands of years ago, and the practice was eventually brought back to Europe by explorers to the New World.

The Mayan Cacao Company offers sessions that teach visitors about the history of chocolate and show them how it has been made for thousands of years. Conveniently, the Mayan Cacao Company is located within Playa Mia Grand Beach Park, so you can visit it while enjoying all of the other amenities that the park has to offer. Beware that separate reservations are necessary, and you’ll have to book directly with the Mayan Cacao Company.

There are organized beach clubs for families who prefer to relax in the sunshine and play around on the water toys, or more remote spots where wildlife and nature are the stars. Kids will love bumping along dirt tracks on ATVs, trying their first scuba dive, or learning how to make a bar of chocolate.

Whether you want to see how many sea stars you can count in one snorkel trip, swim among gentle whale sharks, or spot crocodiles lurking in coastal lagoons, a trip to Cozumel with kids will create special memories for the whole family.

Take a Catamaran Cruise

Taco making is a great activity for the whole family. At a masterclass in Cozumel, you’ll also prepare salsa and guacamole, both essential accompaniments to a good taco.

You’ll learn to make authentic corn tortillas and prepare different styles of taco. Dorados are topped with tomato, cheese, and sour cream. Take a guided snorkel tour over the reefs and admire brightly colored sea fans. On land, take a jeep tour to look out for basking iguanas, coatimundi, and pygmy raccoons, which are smaller (and cuter) than common raccoons.

Head up the observation tower to look for crocodiles lurking in the shallows of the lagoons, or take a boat trip to get closer to these prehistoric-looking reptiles. Climb up the steps inside the lighthouse for sweeping views across the south of Cozumel.

Aside from being one of the best water parks in the Caribbean , the beach itself is gorgeous. Here, you’ll find soft, white sands and crystal clear waters for snorkeling, and palm trees and parasols for shade. There’s an extensive buffet for when you need to refuel.

Learn How To Make Chocolate

The whole family will enjoy an interactive workshop about the origins of chocolate, which was made in Mexico some 4,000 years ago by the ancient Aztecs and Mayans. This workshop takes place on a terrace overlooking the sparkling Caribbean , making the experience all the more pleasurable.

You’ll learn about the history of chocolate and make your own bar. There are various chocolate food pairings to follow: chocolate and red wine for adults, as well as chocolate martinis, and cocoa and chocolate cake for younger visitors.

Try Scuba Diving

Scuba diving is one of the best things to do in Cozumel , and it isn’t just for adults. Kids who are over 10 years old, confident swimmers and, ideally, have some snorkeling experience, can join a beginner’s course in Cozumel with a certified PADI dive instructor.

The day includes an orientation, and a chance to try on full scuba gear and practice breathing underwater. The biggest thrill is a 30-minute dive with the instructor down as far as 25 feet, to spot colorful fish and spectacular coral.

Admire Mayan Antiquities

Granted, not all kids will be initially enthused about a lesson in Mayan history, but Cozumel’s San Gervasio is a fun and educational short trip while you’re on the island. You can see it in about one to two hours, so there’s plenty of time afterward for the beach.

The antiquities stand in the jungle and have been identified as a pilgrimage site where the Mayans worshiped Ixchel, a goddess of childbirth and fertility. The site was occupied as early as 200 BC and, as well as being a place of worship, was an important commercial center.

Visit the Mayan ruins with a guide who will bring the mysteries of the Maya to life. One of the structures, Las Manitas (“little hands”), bears red handprints, the origin of which isn’t known. Some believe they are the handprints of a god, while another theory is that they’re a form of graffiti left by pilgrims who came to worship Ixchel.

Swim With Whale Sharks

May to September is whale shark season in the waters off the Yucatan Peninsula, and you can join a boat trip to spot these gentle beasts.

Don’t be put off by the name; a whale shark filter-feeds on plankton and will barely take any notice of a human near them in the water. They can grow up to 36 feet long, making them the world’s largest fish.

Whale shark spotting tours offer you the opportunity to get in the water with these gentle giants, which can be a real thrill for teens. Anybody who doesn’t want to swim with them can observe them from the boat.

Count Starfish at Playa El Cielo

Playa El Cielo is one of Cozumel’s most beautiful beaches , with white sand and astonishingly clear water. As well as the beach, there’s a shallow sandbar offshore, which is accessible by boat.

Snorkeling here is like swimming in an aquarium, with spectacular marine life in abundance, particularly colorful sea stars. Kids will also love spotting blue tang as well as angelfish, sea turtles, and stingrays.

A trip to Playa El Cielo is a great opportunity for kids to start learning about underwater photography, thanks to the clarity of the water and the sheer number of sea creatures. Investing in a GoPro for your trip to Cozumel with kids is a good idea.

Bargain for Souvenirs in San Miguel

Cozumel is a great place to shop for souvenirs with kids as there are plenty of affordable items—and a little bit of haggling can be fun.

Silver jewelry and beaded bracelets are a good buy, as are lace items, embroidered cotton dresses in traditional Mayan style, and locally made hammocks, which can be folded up small to take home.

Colorful ceramics make fun gifts, as does Mexican chocolate and bags of coffee. Budding chefs will want to stock up on vanilla, too.

There are retail opportunities all over the island, but one of the easiest places to shop in Cozumel (and people-watch) is Plaza de Sol in the center of San Miguel.

Jump Into a Cenote at the Jade Cavern

The Yucatan Peninsula is famous for its cenotes, or freshwater sinkholes, and Cozumel, although an island, is no exception. These natural water holes had great spiritual significance to the Maya, who used them for sacrifices and fertility rituals. Cozumel has around 80 cenotes, all connected by underground rivers.

The Jade Cavern, one of the most famous, is a cenote of cool, green water overhung by dramatic stalactites and greenery. It’s accessed via a 30-minute off-road drive in a special ATV, which is fun for all the family.

You can take a cooling dip when you arrive (although kids won’t be able to touch the bottom as it’s very deep). The brave can jump off the rocks 20 feet into the water.

Get Close to Nature at Isla de la Pasion

Isla de Pasión is a sandy, partly wooded strip of an island just off Cozumel’s north coast. This is a more rustic experience perfect for families who want to explore different ecosystems like mangroves, forest, and lagoons, as well as Caribbean coral reefs offshore.

You can paddle a kayak, looking out for aquatic species, or walk with a guide through the mangroves, where you can see large iguanas and birds.

Along the beach, there are palapas for shade, as well as hammocks for the full castaway experience. Kids can play in the inflatable water park, or join a game of beach volleyball. There’s a full buffet and an open bar to complete the perfect beach day in Cozumel.

Sample Snuba at Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park

An alternative to scuba diving is snuba, in which you wear the same basic gear—fins, mask, weight belt, and regulator—but you don’t carry a tank on your back. Instead, you’re fed compressed air through a tube from a tank on the surface.

Snuba allows you to go deeper than you would with a snorkel, and you don’t have to keep coming up for breath. It can be done with no scuba qualifications and is suitable for anybody eight years old and up.

Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park

Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park is a great place to try snuba. This beach and jungle playground is within the National Reef Marine Park, a protected area where marine life thrives, so there’s plenty to see.

Bring an underwater camera as a visit to Chankanaab is a chance to see a series of dramatic bronze statues that have been installed on the sea bed, some of which are over 14 feet tall.

See Turtles & Stingrays at Playa Palancar

Playa Palancar

One of the best places for families to snorkel in Cozumel is the beautiful Playa Palancar on the southwest of the island. The water is exceptionally clear here, and the Palancar Garden Reef, which lies between 30 and 80 feet deep, teems with life.

Snorkel out over a gently shelving sandy seabed to reach the reef. On the way across, look for stingrays that have buried themselves in the sand, emerging suddenly and gliding across the ocean floor. Floats are available for kids who are not strong swimmers.

Once you’re at the reef, the whole family will be transfixed by the colors and forms of the coral, and the sheer variety of fish. Sea turtles are a common sight, drifting gracefully through the blue. Butterflyfish and angelfish flit around the corals, while grouper patrol the deeper water like guard dogs.

Dive Deep in a Submarine

Not so keen on getting wet? Or do you just want to dive down deeper into Cozumel’s endless blue? Then the best way to admire Cozumel’s underwater world is on the Atlantis Submarine.

You’ll head out to the edge of the island’s reef, which suddenly drops off to more than 2,700 feet deep, although you’ll only dive to depths of around 100 feet. Admire the colors of the coral and the spectacular fish, from big snappers and groupers to stingrays and even sharks.

You’ll glide over a sunken ship, 95 feet down, that’s gradually being colonized as an artificial reef. Everybody gets a window seat, so kids will be mesmerized by the experience.

I’ve been to Mexico’s Mayan Riviera more than a dozen times, and even Tween Traveler has been there twice as a toddler and younger kid. So on our Norwegian Getaway Western Caribbean cruise, we didn’t have a lot of curiosity and high expectations around our port days in Cozumel and Costa Maya .

Indeed, my family planned for these two ports days to be more about relaxing at the beach than sightseeing. But we still managed to get a bit off the beaten trail and experience some the port areas’ local flavors.

I enjoyed our time in both ports, in very different ways. Tween Traveler and Rich liked Cozumel better and we maximized our time on shore here. They headed back to the cruise ship early in Costa Maya , something we never do, while I stayed behind to explore the port a bit more.

Costa Maya and Cozumel Cruise Ports: The Best Things Do On Shore With A Tween

How to make the most of 1 day in the costa maya cruise port.

As we were pulling in to the Costa Maya, it looked like they built a cruise ship port in the middle of the  Yucatan jungle. And that’s exactly what it is. Popular Riviera Maya destinations like Sian Ka’an Bioreserve, the ruins at Tulum or lively Playa del Carmen are all three or four hours away.

 It’s yet another destination where, if you want to get out of the port and do more than go to the beach, you need to book an excursion, either through your cruise ship or at one of the tour companies in the port.  

What’s In Costa Maya’s Port

This was my favorite port area or the four we visited. It was a good size, it was lively and it had fun things to do.

The best thing about the port is Mayan Healing Ritual spa .  The prices are fantastic and the service is even better. I asked for a foot and leg massage, which was expertly done and whisked away my plantar fasciitis. I was at an upstairs table where I could hear the ocean, birds and music in the distance.

It was like getting a massage in a jungle tree house. The whole experience was relaxing and I wished afterward that I’d opted for a full-body massage. If I ever go back, this is where I will spend the whole day.

You can book an appointment ahead, but I had no problem walking in, and it’s good to see the menu of options.

There is a large, free pool  in the middle of the port and free beach chairs, where you can hang out for the day, and many people do. there are a couple of cute fountains for little kids to splash in, too. 

If you want to go to the beach you can catch a shuttle or taxi for a few dollars to nearby Mahahual , a once sleepy fishing village that’s now in the business of catering to cruise ship passengers.

It’s not my kind of beach experience. A paved boardwalk runs the length of the beach, with souvenir stands and restaurants on one side.  On the other side the restaurants have beachside bars and lounge chairs going all the way down to the water. There’s quite a bit of loud music to create a “party” atmosphere.

The sea is clear blue but piles of sargassum seaweed along the water’s edge made swimming unappealing. Between the chairs and the seaweed, walking along the shore was impossible.

(I learned afterward that seaweed overload is a problem all along the Yucatan. The local government and tourism authorities are working very hard to find a solution.)

We ate lunch, walked the length of the beach and did some souvenir shopping. Since the swimming didn’t seem worth the price of renting a beach chair, we headed back to the port.

A lot of the Mahahual restaurants have colorful beach themes, loud music and touts on the boardwalk trying to get you to come in. They offer a mix of Mexican and American food.

We walked to the far end of the boardwalk and found the low-key Jaime’s café with plastic patio furniture, swings instead of bar stools, no music, no touts and a few people who looked local. It also had a nice beach view. We decided that this was where we would find good food.

We did well. Tween Traveler got a plate full of garlicky shrimp, rice and tortillas. 

Rich and I shared fresh guacamole and chips and a plate of fish and shrimp tacos. The food, two beers and a Coke came to around $30.

Back at the port , you’ll find fresh juices, made-to-order tacos, local seafood and larger Mexican dishes, all at pretty reasonable prices. There are a few bars, too, including a swim-up bar in the pool.

A cafe sells Mexican coffee drinks and a panaderia sells sugary fried churros and conches, sweet glazed bread that’s spiraled like a shell. We popped in to the bakery for samples and bought some goats-milk caramel and spicy tamarind candy to take back to the ship.

The souvenir stalls at the port are your typical Mexican tchotchkes. Prices seemed fair and are probably fixed (but it never hurts to ask). There are high-end jewelry stores, too, but I don’t think they’re selling Mexican jewelry, which is lovely when you find the high-quality items.

There are opportunities to sample and buy both tequila and very good local artisanal chocolate.

In Mahahual , the stalls sell some of the same tchotchkes but there’s more inexpensive (not real) silver jewelry and some hand-crafted items and large conch shells. Tween Traveler found some cute turtle earrings that were in her budget.

Here you definitely bargain. The seller quoted us $15 for the earrings but when Tween Traveler started to walk away she quickly dropped her price to $10.

A popular excursion takes you to the Chacchoben Mayan ruins about an hour away, followed by lunch and swimming in a freshwater lagoon .

The ruins are more recently discovered and less excavated than Tulum or Coba, but probably less crowded and moe accessible as well.

There is also the Maya: Lost Mayan Kingdom  water park adjacent to the port with ziplines, water slides, swimming pools and a lazy river. You can book an “excursion” through the ship, but I don’t see an advantage to doing this over just booking tickets on your own.

There are also snorkeling excursions . If you book one either on your own or through the ship, make sure they take you to the large off-shore reef. Some packages only offer off-the-beach snorkeling, which is handy with very small children but won’t be nearly as good.

If you want to stay near the port try one of the cooking classes that teach you how to make authentic guacamole, fish tacos and margaritas.

How To Make the Most of 1 Day in the Cozumel Cruise Port

I had always heard of Cozumel described as Cancun’s low-key sister. So I was surprised at how developed it is, at least where we anchored for our day in port. 

That said, we liked Cozumel because it’s a real destination, not a private island or isolated port, and it was easy to do things on our own.

What’s In Cozumel’s Port

There are a few cruise terminals in San Miguel, so make sure you know which one you’re returning to. The NCL Getaway pulled in to a side port, not the main cruise-ship terminal when we were there. 

We arrived in a port that was a fairly non-descript mall. But it has two information and booking desks, which seem to be official Cozumel tourism desks. We stopped by to ask for information about taxis and for a nearby beach where we could snorkel near the shore and that would be quiet; not a party place.

Because of time and logistical limits we did the easy thing and opted for Playa Uvas , a beach club about 15 minutes from the port. For small per-person fee we had chairs and umbrellas, hammocks, showers and changing rooms (in good condition), a small pool, snorkel gear, kayaks and one cocktail, beer or soft drink apiece.  

There was a craggy line of coral and rocks between the sand and water, so it wouldn’t have been ideal for splashing in the shallows with a toddler. But because of the rocks and coral the snorkeling was as good as promised.

Tween Traveler isn’t keen on snorkeling but she swam near shore with her goggles and saw quite a bit. Rich and I had our own masks and borrowed flippers so we could explore further out and around. We saw a lot of fish, and a staff member in the water pointed out a baby ray and a puffer fish hiding in the rocks. 

You could rent glass-bottom kayaks for an additional fee, which we didn’t do, but they looked cool. The water was clear enough that we could see some fish over the side of our sit-on-top kayaks.

The beach was quiet when we arrived, but around lunchtime excursion groups that had beeen to Mayan ruins or on ATV tours started to show up for snorkeling. Of course all their splashing and noise scared the nearest fish away, so early morning or late afternoon is the best time to hang out there. We were beginning to feel a bit baked anyway, so we decided to take a taxi to the mercado municipal for lunch.

Round trip taxi was about $30, bringing the whole excursion to less than $80. Playa Uvas has different packages that include lunch and drinks , an open bar or a massage.

Tween Traveler had a second breakfast of rice and refried black beans at the beach and declared them the best beans she’s ever had. I think if we’d stayed for lunch the food would have been predictable Mexican fare but good and reasonably priced.

The municipal market wasn’t as busy on a weekday afternoon as I imagine it in in the morning and on weekends. There were a few restaurants inside with counters and tables nearby. Some are cash only and not expensive.

We walked around the outside just to explore a bit and found El Chino Marinero , which looked like a diner and served good seafood at local prices.

Tween traveler had fried shrimp that were seasoned but not spicy with rice and tortillas. Rich and I had shared a huge ceviche, fried fish tacos and chile relleno, all topped with housemade salsas. it was all freshly made and showed how good authentic Mexican food can be.

For dessert we went to a paleteria across from the market that was fantastic.

Their homemade paletas (ice pops) and ice creams combined tropical fruit, cream and sugar. The ice pops had chunks of strawberries, guava and oreos. Ice cream flavors included strawberry, guava, guanabana and elote (grilled corn).

My cajeta paleta had ribbon of rich goats milk caramel running through vanilla ice cream and a square of soft caramel in the middle. Rich’s pistachio ice pop had bits of nuts mixed in.

Tween Traveler, afraid a pop would melt down her arm before she could finish it, opted for bright blue and purple cotton-candy ice cream. It was real, full-fat ice cream and better than hose kinds of kid flavors usually are.

The Zocalo is at the center of a large group of pedestrian streets not far from the ship terminal. The souvenir shops around here had more variety of products and a wider range of quality than in Costa Maya.

You can probably find good Mexican silver if you look hard, but there are a lot of knock-offs, too. Real silver always has a number inscribed on it. But prices are an easier indicator: If silver and vanilla inexpensive, they’re almost certainly fake.

We bought some small, colorful Day of the Dead skulls to hang on our Christmas tree. I spotted a day spa and a pharmacy. We hoped to find a supermarket but didn’t come across one.

You can find hamburgers, coffee, pizza, sports bars, party bars (yes, there’s a Señor Frogs), and even some Mexican food around the Zocalo, too.

The shopping at the port was uninspiring. Unless you really need a lucha libre mask you can skip it.

NCL offers a plethora of excursions from this port. You can SCUBA dive , combine any number of land and water activities with snorkeling, have them deliver you to a beach for the day or go to the main land to visit ruins, cenotes or one of the eco parks. 

I would use the ship for any mainland ventures to make sure you’re back on time. Otherwise, it’s easy to book local excursions ahead of time or in the port.

After the beach, lunch, ice pops and some shopping we walked back to the ship relaxed and feeling like for once, we’d made the most of our time in port.

Things to do in Cozumel with Kids: Chankanaab Park

I’ve been to Cozumel in Mexico a few times, but this past Thanksgiving marked the first time I’d traveled there with with kids. In other words, no Senor Frogs or lazy day at beach with a bucket of Corona – we needed to find things to do in Cozumel with kids . Enter  Chankanaab Park .

The park is located inside Cozumel’s National Marine Park and offers almost everything for families so EVERYONE is happy. And that’s a hard thing to do – make everyone happy – but Chankanaab Park does a really great job in trying to accomplish this. From hiking, touring Mayan ruins, snorkeling, swimming with dolphins, to sitting and reading on the beach (bucket of Corona is optional), you name it this park is a perfect place to spend a day with your family in Cozumel.

The word Chankanaab comes from the Mayan language: Chan, which is small and Kanaab means sea. Small sea, which is making reference to the natural lagoon inside the park. But, there is nothing small about Chankanaab Park. The park offers a lot,  these are just a few of the activities you can enjoy at Chankanaab Park.

Great Pool I’m not sure why I was surprised by how nice the pool at Chankanaab Park was, but I was. It’s a very large, tiled pool that is divided into separate sections for different types of visitors to enjoy. On one side of the pool there is a swim up bar for adults to lounge and grab a snack. On the opposite side of the pool there is a shallow children’s play area. The two sections are connected via a shallow section of the pool, making it an excellent way for older kids to have a little space from mom and dad (not to mention mom and dad having some space).  On either side of the shallow connection, there is a deeper area for swimming. There are life guards on duty, but you need to make sure and be responsible for your kids.

Mayan Ruins If you are bent on seeing Mayan Ruins in Cozumel, you can get a little taste of it at Chankanaab Park. However, you may be disappointed to learn the ruins are simply replicas. I knew this walking in so my exceptions were low. I was pleased though, the park does a good job in showcasing the ruins on a short walk through the “jungle” trial. Along the trail, you see different statues, wildlife and a beautiful waterfall. I absolutely loved the Iguanas we came across and will never forget the scream that came from Princess One when an Iguana nearly as big as her darted across the path in front of her. Ah, mixing nature and Princesses…

The “jungle” trail ends in a replica Mayan village complete with a few huts, bathhouse and outdoor meeting area. I really enjoyed taking the historical walk with Princess One and talking to her about what things were and how people used to live. Even though it was a replica it provided a nice introduction to Mayan history and it was short enough for a five-year-old to stay entertained and soak in a short history lesson – or at least humor me.

Crocodile Exhibition Princess One and I had set out on our “jungle walk” to find the Mayan Ruins when we happened upon the Crocodile Exhibition. It’s a fairly small exhibition with only two enclosed areas for the crocodiles but interesting non-the-less. One of the exhibition’s is home to smaller, younger croc’s while the other has a few larger ones swimming or basking in the sun.

Children’s Beach There is a small, children’s beach area with a shallow lagoon for kids to safely play in the water and build sand castles. The area also has several shaded spots for families to sit back and relax while the kids play. A small store is located near the beach so you can purchase sand toys if you did not bring any. There are life guards on duty, but as usual you need to be responsible for your kids.

Snorkeling Snorkeling at Chankanaab Park is allowed in the snorkeling areas on the main beach. If you plan to snorkel you’ll need to be a good swimmer as the entry points to the snorkeling areas are by large concert steps that put you into deeper water. Swimming out a bit from the shore/rock line will provide a little calmer experience. This isn’t something you’ll really want to do with little ones unless they’re good swimmers (and wearing a life jacket) since the water is deep and bit rougher. Kids can attempt to snorkel in the kids lagoon, although they’re likely to see more swimmers than fish.

Tequila Tasting and Tour Inside Chankanaab Park Hacienda Antique offers tequila tastings and tours for people to learn how tequila is made and the origins of the famous Mexican drink. Prices vary depending on if you want to do a simple tasting or have a full tour.

Sea Lion and Manatee Discovery Programs The Sea Lion and Manatee Discovery Programs are also offered by Dolphin Discovery at Chankanaab Park. Both are $50 for kids and $60 for adults. The Sea Lion program includes activities such as learning about sea lion s diet, feeding them, petting them and getting a kiss from them. The Manatee Encounter is the only swim with manatees program in the Caribbean. The program allows participants to learn about Manatees and share a kiss, a hug and feed these massive sea animals.

Free Sea Lion show Throughout the day at Chankanaab Park there are free discovery sessions that take place in the Sea Lion and Manatee area. These sessions are general shows for visitors to come and watch the sea animals perform with their trainers. They make for a nice break from the beach or after lunch performance.

Onsite Dining There are three dining options at Chankanaab Park, they all looked delicious and were reasonably priced. Outside near the pool, you can order traditional American food – burgers, hot dogs and french fries as well as more local, Mexican cuisine. There is also restaurant alongside the beach where the menu consists of Mexican specialties (no burgers and fries). We grabbed lunch at the pool and I must admit, it was one of the best meals of our trip – shrimp tacos, shrimp and beef fajitas, rice and beans, guacamole and quesadillas. Delish!

Spa If lounging at the beach isn’t relaxing enough, there is a spa located on the beach at Chankanaab Park. Services range from short shoulder massages, to Swedish massages to deep tissue massages. All while you’re listening to the waves and enjoying the tranquility of the beach.

We we just there last week, and I feel like we missed out! Our group of four adults spent most of the day snorkeling, sunning and enjoying some adult beverages on the beach. Will definitely have to go back and check out some of the other features of the park.

I’m so excited to find this post, because I just booked our family’s tickets to Cozumel for June! It will be our first time there, and first trip to Mexico. This park looks like a great day excursion.

We were there on Christmas-eve Day on a cruise. We loved it. Only did the snorkeling – skipped the pool, dolphins and everything else. Was surprised with how great this place was!

We skipped the snorkeling! With the kids it just didn’t seem do-able. Next time.

We just went to Cozumel and I was determined to see Mayan ruins so we went to San Gervasio. Chankanaab park does look really fun and I would be all about the tequila tasting!

Ohhhh, I haven’t been to San Gervasio. Was it good?

Yeah, it was really interesting. Small, but that was perfect for our small kids attention spans.

Watch your children interact with bottlenose dolphins in a sheltered cove while a trainer stands by to ensure a memorable experience for everyone. It will just take a few minutes to reach Dolphinaris Cozumel, an aquatic park dedicated to the conservation and protection of marine mammals. After a kid-friendly introduction to dolphin behavior and characteristics, your kids will ease onto a shallow submerged platform in the water that the dolphins inhabit. These marine mammals are exceptionally friendly, curious and highly intelligent. Chances are, the dolphins will soon approach as they enjoy human contact. Your children will be encouraged to touch, hug and even kiss the dolphins, if they are comfortable with that level of contact. All the while, you can observe the playful interaction between your kids and the dolphins.

Parents can take full advantage of everything Dolphinaris Cozumel has to offer. Stop by the restaurant for a la carta Lunch and unlimited drinks. Have the option to snorkel at Serenity Cove, a safe inlet where you can swim through an underwater aquarium filled with tropical fish and starfish!
