This happens often because Harry Potter Studios – the Warner Brothers tour outside of London – sells out months in advance. For popular dates like Christmas time, Halloween, and school holidays, it can sell out even faster. 

It also happens because buying directly is the cheapest ticket. Harry Potter studio tickets directly from the Warner Brothers website start at £53.50.

Here are 4 ways to buy Harry Potter Studio tickets when they’re sold out on the website.

1. Purchase Harry Potter Studio Tickets Resale 

By “resale,” I mean tickets through a 3rd party retailer. There are tons of these companies that buy up tickets, or are allocated a certain amount for their business, and resell them. 

There is generally more availability with these retailers since it’s a bit more expensive than booking directly with Warner Brothers Studios. But many of them offer transportation included with the ticket, so it’s not a bad deal at all!

Here are the most trusted 3rd party retailers to purchase Harry Potter Studios tickets resale, according to travelers who have purchased before.

a) Tiquets : from £104

Tiquets is a reliable ticket vendor for tickets for Harry Potter Studios that offer either the basic entry ticket, plus transportation from Central London. Customers have said the buses are comfortable, have Wifi, and the 4 hour studio tour is well worth the price and it’s incredible.

b) Viator : from £104

Travel giant Viator usually has Harry Potter studio tickets available, and they too offer transport from Central London included with the ticket. Prices between Viator & Tiquets are usually about the same.

c) ⭐️ Get Your Guide : from £99 ⭐️

Get Your Guide is another reliable vendor for tickets for Harry Potter Studios, and they include comfortable coach transport from Central London. Harry Potter Studio tickets from Get Your Guide average about £5 less than Viator and Tiquets , though prices may fluctuate.  

d) Evan Evans Tours: from £105

If you have a Mastercard, you can join Mastercard Priceless.

Priceless is Mastercard’s exclusive events and experiences platform, where tickets are released to Mastercard members before the general public.

20 tickets are released each day for 2-7 days in advance , so this is a great option if you need last minute Harry Potter studios tickets.

4. Harry Potter Studio Tickets Resale Are Too Expensive, and It’s Still Sold Out! 

There are so many ways to experience the magic of Harry Potter in London, and the studio isn’t the only place that the movies were filmed! There are a huge number of locations in London where you can experience Hogwarts in the Capital.

1. Guided Harry Potter Tours: See All The Filming Locations!

Lots of tour companies offer guided Harry Potter walking tours of London. But which is the best?

a) ⭐️ Get Your Guide: Magical London Harry Potter Walking Tour ⭐️

From £20pp you can explore the magic of Harry Potter in London with this interactive tour. You even get to hop on a boat and explore the Thames – this is really two experiences for the price of one!

b) Viator: The Original Harry Potter London Locations Tour

From £20pp you can test your Harry Potter knowledge with quiz questions as you stroll along the streets of Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square, seeing some of the iconic locations where the films were made!

c) Tiquets: Harry Potter Guided Film Locations Tour

This experience from Tiquets is on the pricier end (from £29pp) , but it’s the only Harry Potter tour that includes a visit to Platform 9 3/4. It’s also the longest at 2.5 hours, so it covers a lot that the other tours don’t.

2. Self-Guided Tours

3. The Cursed Child

The Cursed Child is the never-before published story by JK Rowling, entering a brand new storyline in the Harry Potter Universe. This theatre production is absolutely MAGICAL.

I was absolutely blown away by the production value, the sets, the effects – it’s like you’re watching magic happen in front of your eyes. It’s not only a great way to experience Harry Potter in London, it’s also just a fantastic theatre experience.

Tickets vary in price, and they do sell out quickly, especially during peak times. There are a huge amount of vendors to choose from for tickets, but Ticketmaster sometimes has really great deals and promos.

4. Shopping

There are tons of shopping destinations for Harry Potter merch and memorabilia in London. My favorites are: Hamleys (Oxford Street), Forbidden Planet (Covent Garden), and the Platform 9 3/4 Shop at King’s Cross Station.

5. Visit Platform 9 3/4

Most visitors to London will find themselves at King’s Cross Station at some point. Don’t forget to visit the iconic photo stop! Sometimes it gets crowded and you’ll have to wait your turn in the queue. But it’s never more than 30 minutes or so.

Most of it is, but parts – like Privet Drive – are outdoors. No matter the weather, this is a really fun attraction!

Where to stay for Harry Potter studio tour?

You can easily stay in London for easy access to the Harry Potter studio. It’s an hour by train or 90 minutes by coach (and most tour companies provide transport). If you want to stay closer, Watford has a lot of affordable hotels to choose from.

Is Harry Potter World the same as Harry Potter Studios?

These two often get confused. Harry Potter World usually refers to the Universal Studios attractions- both in Orlando and Los Angeles. But often when you’re in the UK, people will refer to Harry Potter Studios as ‘Harry Potter World’ because it’s the largest Harry Potter attraction in the UK, and it’s like stepping into Harry Potter’s world!

Get Tickets to Harry Potter Studio Tour If Sold Out

There are several ways of getting tickets to the Harry Potter Studio Tour if sold out. Since tickets offered directly from the Warner Bros Studio Website normally sell out months in advance, we’ve come up with a lifesaving guide with links to all the companies that offer Harry Potter Studio tickets with or without transportation from Central London. You can also get in touch  using the form at the bottom of this page. How to Find Tickets:

The first place to look is here  and here .

You can choose your meeting point on the booking form. Some options include the possibility of collecting the tickets from the Studio Tour without taking the transportation. Please note that the ticket price will remain the same, even if you do not take the transport.

This is one of the major providers of Harry Potter Studio tickets and your tour includes entrance to the studios plus transportation from Central London. There are several departure times at 08.30, 10.30. 11.30 and 13.30. Price is £105 per adult and £100 per child.

These are two Harry Potter Warner Bros Studio tours that also include a visit to Oxford.

Tours are available in smaller and larger groups and depart from Central London in the morning. There are often tickets available for these tours when other providers are sold out. On these tours, there is sometimes also an option to visit just the Warner Bros Studios without visiting Oxford. In this case, you would have to return to London from the Warner Bros studios independently. The ticket price is the same whichever option you choose.

STEP 3…

The third place to check for tickets is here ,

Use the search functions and include all possible travel dates to maximize your chances of success. GetYourGuide is a website where many different companies market Harry Potter Studio Tour tickets at varying prices and conditions. Some include transportation by bus, others by train and some with a private transfer. Some companies offer guided tours of the Warner Brother Studio whilst others simply provide a ticket which is self-guided.

STEP 4…

The fourth place to look is   here , here and here . This option includes pickup from Victoria Station.

Make sure to check tickets for all the different entrance times, and especially at 5pm or 6pm .  This is a major provider which might just offer a good way of getting to the Harry Potter studio tour when sold out. Tours are offered with return transportation to Central London and with departure times every hour from 9am to 6pm from London Victoria. Make sure to check this option regularly as last minute tickets do become available.

The fifth place to check is here , here , and here . These are the most expensive ticket options, which can be the last to sell out. Options include the only Fully Guided tour of the Studio, a Hotel pickup and dropoff service, and, on Friday evenings only, a visit to the Studio with a Champagne reception.

The sixth place to check for tickets is here and here  

Get a ticket and a hotel room from £125 per person.If you are planning on staying in a hotel during your trip, this is a very good way of getting tickets with transportation, which are normally sold out first. Hotel prices are very competitive, can be booked for up to 3 nights, and you’ll pay the regular cost of a studio ticket. It’s possible to stay in a number of 3* and 4* hotels located in Central London. You can see full terms and conditions on their website.

If you are visiting London and have already booked a hotel, you may be able to cancel your reservation for free. You could then book a hotel that’s included in this package.

We’ve left this suggestion to last because they are normally the first place to get sold out, but it’s worth a go! (This option includes just the ticket to the studio tour, with no transportation to and from London.) If you find a ticket,   you can buy return bus transportation tickets to the Studios from Central London  here .

All Harry Potter Studio Tours from London include entrance tickets. From here, each provider will offer a slightly different product.

Some tour operators provide a shuttle bus transportation service from London Victoria Coach Station. This tends to be the cheapest way of getting from London to the Warner Bros Studio Tour. However, since it’s the cheapest, tickets also tend to get sold out first!

You might consider a more expensive option, which is to take a fully guided Harry Potter Studio Tour which includes escorted train tickets from London Euston Station. The great advantage of this option is that not only is it a fully guided tour, but you also get to stay on as long as you want after the official tour has ended, with time perhaps to check out the café and souvenir shop.

Another alternative is to purchase a hotel package , whereby tickets are included as part of a deal that includes a hotel pickup service directly from Central London. The service is offered for anyone staying in a hotel, apartment or accommodation within zone 1.

If this option is also sold out, then by far the most expensive option (and so with the best chance of success!) is to take a private taxi service from London. This service picks up from Baker Street and you get to enjoy the pleasure of a private car to and from the Studios. The price, of course, includes entrance tickets to the Harry Potter Warner Bros Studios.

One final option to consider is a full day tour that combines a visit to the Harry Potter Warner Bros Studios with a tour of Harry Potter locations in the university town of Oxford. The tour is not that much more expensive than the shuttle service and tends to get sold out only a week or two before the date of departure. The advantage of this tour is that you get a great full day out for all the family! The tour is available every Saturday, with Wednesday and Sunday departures available from April to October.

This tip worked for me on my last trip to London. I decided I wanted to revisit the studio tour and looked up tickets a few weeks before my trip. And, of course, everything was sold out. There were zero tickets available for the entire week I was in London. Instead of giving up, I checked the website daily starting the week before my trip. Tickets are re-released, if available, one week before on the official website.

If your heart is absolutely set on visiting the studio tour, this option might not be the best for you. Waiting until the very last minute could cause some pre-trip anxiety. Also, you will be disappointed if you cannot secure last-minute tickets and all the tours sell out.

Harry Potter Studio Tour Resale Tickets

You’ll find Harry Potter resale tickets available on various platforms. Most of these tickets are at a higher price point than the official website, yet usually include transportation from London. While there are a handful of sites where you can purchase your tickets, I highly recommend booking from a reputable site like Get Your Guide . Get Your Guide typically allows you to cancel any of their tours for a full refund up to a certain number of days leading up to your trip (make sure to check the cancellation policy before you book).

Book a Harry Potter Studio Tour with Transport

This option for securing last-minute tickets to the Harry Potter Studio tour is the most expensive, but it is also the least stressful. Many people choose to book one of these tours, regardless if tickets are available on the official website. Booking one of these tours is great because they include transport from London. That means you don’t need to worry about navigating public transportation to Watford Junction.

These private transfers can accommodate groups of up to eight people. The Harry Potter Studio Tour with private transfer  is a great option if you’re looking for last-minute Harry Potter Studio Tickets for a group.

If one of these guided tours to the Harry Potter Studio is out of your budget and you can’t find tickets on the website, there’s really not much you can do besides wait. I suggest scheduling loose plans that you’re okay with changing for the day you hoped to get tickets to the Harry Potter Studio Tour. You might luck out, and tickets will become available a few days or even the day before your visit.

And it’s not just about looking. This place lets you get hands-on with the magic, too.

You can hop aboard the Hogwarts Express at a recreated Platform 9¾ – they’ve even got a luggage trolley disappearing into the wall. And if you’ve ever fancied a spin in the Weasley’s flying car , this is your chance!

One of the most incredible things about the studios is how it peels back the curtain on filmmaking. 

Ever wondered how they made Dobby look so lifelike or how they built those complex sets?

The Creature Effects and Art Department sections have you covered, showing off the incredible craftsmanship and detailing that went into creating Harry’s world.

I’m a massive Harry Potter fan, so I had to book the fully guided tour that takes you behind the scenes in the Harry Potter Studios. 

Was it worth it?

While browsing GetYourGuide , I chanced upon tickets for a guided tour at Harry Potter Studios, scheduled for a week later. As a long-time fan, I couldn’t resist.

I swiftly secured my ticket, booked a flight to London and arranged a night’s stay at The Phoenix – a charming hotel in the Paddington/Bayswater area of London .

With that, I was set for my magical escapade.

Tickets for this luxury tour are quite pricey, but when you consider the array of benefits included, it’s undeniable value for money:

Our rendezvous point was at Euston Station, underneath the grand ‘ Arrivals ‘ board.

The guide, easy to spot with his tour flag, briefed us that we had about 15 minutes before the train departure – just enough time for a coffee and an Irn-Bru (the drink I’m still craving daily after living in Scotland). 

The journey from Euston to Watford Junction was a swift 20 minutes.

Once there, our guide led us to a shuttle bus for a brief 10-15 minute drive to the studios, located amid the tranquil countryside.

Though the exterior of the Harry Potter Studios may not be particularly awe-inspiring, what lies inside is nothing short of spectacular.

Upon disembarking from the shuttle, our second guide led us into the massive box-like building.

Once inside, each visitor was given a headset, a brilliant feature ensuring everyone could clearly hear the guide, regardless of their proximity.

As we stepped into the studios, we were greeted by the splendid sight of the Great Hall.

As an ardent fan who has read each book at least ten times and sought every Harry Potter experience in London, and Edinburgh I was thoroughly impressed by the wealth of knowledge our guide offered.

Our guide expertly navigated the roped-off boundaries separating us from the numerous sets, props, and costumes, providing a depth of insight and engaging stories about the actors, the Harry Potter universe, and the exhibits.

The opportunity to experience such intimacy with the magic behind the films validates the cost of the ‘luxury tour’.

I’ve done a video from the Studios – and even though it’s in Danish I’m sure you can get a feel for the vibes:

At the tour’s conclusion, the guide offered to escort anyone who wished to revisit the studios back to the entrance, bypassing the queue.

However, I opted to return to London – travelling alone, waking up incredibly early, and the shuttle back seemed the best choice with a busy day at the office ahead.

There’s no doubt about it: if you’re a superfan of Harry Potter then this fully guided tour is a must and in my opinion one of the best things to do in London .

I must say that I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, I've been obsessed since I was a little kid. Having a day in London fully dedicated to my favorite books was so great. The tour in the city was really cool to see all the filming sites, then the studios was so awesome. The sets were so cool, the miniatures are really interesting. I over booked the ticket to Harry potter studio tour on December 19, 2015. How I can cancel it? Or any websit that I could resell my ticket?

‘Harry Potter’ Attraction Abandons Riders Upside Down, Safety Protocol Fails

Universal will not be able to use magic to make this lawsuit disappear.

Universal Studios Hollywood is undergoing a lawsuit after four guests were hung in a dangerous position and left “abandoned” for a lengthy period of time after riding Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. 

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey was and still is a groundbreaking attraction at Universal Studios theme parks, known for its immersive experience and cutting-edge technology. It opened at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida, on June 18, 2010, and later at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Japan.

The ride takes guests on a journey through Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where they encounter iconic characters from the Harry Potter series, including Harry, Ron, Hermione, and other magical creatures.

The plot revolves around a visit to Hogwarts for a tour of the castle, which quickly turns into an adventure when guests are enlisted to help Harry and his friends retrieve a lost item. Along the way, they encounter challenges, magical creatures, and scenes from the beloved books and films. It is truly both terrifying and magical, and feels like you are flying through the series in mere minutes.

According to news site The Blast , “Four individuals are suing Universal Studios Hollywood in California after their cart on the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride was left stranded in midair. According to the suit… Debra Biane, Gerald Scott Biane, Josh Taylorson, and Sami-Joh Goldberg, are suing the California theme park after riding the ‘Harry Potter’ attraction and suffering “severe injuries and incurred medical expenses.”

Around April 7, 2022, the four patrons visiting the theme park reported that while riding the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey attraction, the ride abruptly halted, leaving their cart suspended midair at an angle, causing them to tilt backward and to the right. Debra, Gerald, Josh, and Sam-Joh allege that they remained in this position for about an hour before the cart was eventually adjusted to an upright position.

Subsequently, after approximately thirty minutes in the upright position, the cart was maneuvered to the catwalk, allowing the four individuals to disembark from the rollercoaster.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey has had many malfunctions in the past, causing guests to either be stuck in an uncomfortable position for a lengthy period of time or to evacuate. This is not out of the ordinary, as nearly every theme park attraction breaks down from time to time, but there are areas in this ride that are less than ideal for ” hanging out.”

I myself have been stuck on this ride during the whomping willow scene, where the ride vehicle is nearly flipped upside down. In my case, I just had to remain in that position for a few minutes before the ride started back up again, but there were guests screaming for help. We were given the chance to ride again due to the technical issues, and unfortunately, the ride once again broke down.

All of that is to say, this experience is not a total shock, considering the ride’s history.

The lawsuit claims the “rollercoaster clearly malfunctioned,” and the guests were “left in a position which subjected them to severe injuries for an unreasonable and dangerous amount of time.”

The Blast continued to note, “The lawsuit further states that the malfunction of the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey rollercoaster “constituted a dangerous and/or unsafe condition” that subjected those who were riding “an unreasonable risk of injuries.”

The four individuals claim Universal Studios Hollywood should have known that the coaster “would malfunction and stop mid-ride,” but they “failed to properly inspect, maintain, and/or repair” the coaster “to adequately address this risk and prevent [the ride] from causing injuries to those who rode.”

Additionally, the four individuals accuse Universal Studios Hollywood of failing “to implement proper procedures to safely bring the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey rollercoaster to its landing for the safe exit by those who rode this [ride], and to prevent them from being suspended for an unreasonable amount of time.”

“The failure to implement and execute proper procedures for the safe and timely exit from the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey rollercoaster in the event of a malfunction” allowed the riders to suffer “severe injuries, and incurred medical expenses and general damages in an amount to be proven at the time of trial.”

Debra Biane, Gerald Scott Biane, Josh Taylorson, and Sami-Joh Goldberg have filed a lawsuit seeking damages, with the exact amount unspecified in the complaint but stated to exceed $25,000.

The ride has undergone two other lawsuits from rider injury — one in 2016 and one in 2018.

At Universal Studios Hollywood, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is the main attraction for guests . The other attraction, Flight of the Hippogriff, is a much smaller kids’ coaster. At Universal Orlando Resort, there are other major Harry Potter -themed rides, such as Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts. Soon, Epic Universe will also hold a ride themed to the Ministry of Magic.

Passengers Stuck on Harry Potter Ride for Over an Hour Are Suing Universal Studios Hollywood

Four people allege that they "suffered severe injuries and incurred medical expenses" after they were stranded on 'Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey'

Four people are suing Universal Studios Hollywood, alleging that they were left stranded on the “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey” ride for over an hour and sustained injuries as a result.

According to documents obtained by PEOPLE, Debra Biane, Gerald Scott Biane, Josh Taylorson and Sami-Joh Goldberg claim they “were left in a position which subjected them to severe injuries for an unreasonable and dangerous amount of time” when they rode the attraction on April 7, 2022.

The complaint says that while they were on the ride, the ride vehicle "suddenly, and without warning came to an abrupt stop, stranding their cart midair at an angle that left them tilted backward and to the right." 

It alleges that they were then stuck in the position for approximately an hour, after which the cart was moved to an upright position. Approximately 30 minutes later, the cart was moved to the catwalk and they were able to exit the ride.

They claim that due to the park's "negligence" they "suffered severe injuries, and incurred medical expenses and general damages in an amount to be proven at the time of trial,” according to the complaint.

The complaint alleges that one of the plaintiffs, Debra Biane, underwent  “significant medical treatment, including surgery,” as a result of the incident, and “has been unable to perform the duties of a wife” to her husband, fellow plaintiff Gerald Scott Biane.

The married couple also “suffered serious emotional distress as a result of watching the other spouse being injured,” per the document.

PEOPLE reached out to Universal for comment, but did not immediately hear back.

The day of the incident in 2022, ABC 7 reported that a power outage in Los Angeles left nearly a dozen people stuck on another ride at Universal Studios Hollywood. 

According to the outlet, the Los Angeles County Fire Department learned that 11 people were stranded on the theme park's "Transformers" ride. In aerial footage, LACOFD units could be seen swarming the north side of Universal Studios, the area affected by the outage, ABC added, noting that a ride in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter area was also impacted.

The complaint accuses Universal of "failing to provide proper backups such as generators in case of a power outage; failing to properly maintain backups such as generators in case of a power outage; permitting rollercoasters to operate when power outages were occurring; failing to warn customers of rolling power outages" and "failing to implement policies and procedures to safely and timely remove customers from rollercoasters in cases of power outages."

“Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey” is the signature attraction at the California version of the Wizarding World, which opened at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2016 .

Universal’s website describes the ride as a “thrilling adventure,” during which riders enter Hogwarts through the “towering castle gates” and travel through the “familiar passageways and corridors” of the school of witchcraft and wizardry, before they “soar above the castle grounds." The dark ride uses a vehicle mechanism in which riders legs dangle below them in order to simulate flying.

Universal categorizes it as a "Thrill, Motion Simulation" attraction and notes visitors must be 48" tall to ride.

Early reports had each season of the series focusing on one book in the Harry Potter book series, which consists of seven novels, but Bloys said the project would run for “10 consecutive years,” which would seem to defy the 1 season, 1 book assertion. For those who say Fantastic Beasts could be leveraged to provide 10 seasons over 10 years, WBD brass said specifically during the announcement that FB will not be a part of the series.

Whatever the case, Bloys promised that, as the company embarks on its new Harry Potter adventure, “We do so with the full care and craft of this franchise.”

Who Is creating the Harry Potter series?

It has taken a bit, given the initial announcement was in April 2023, but in recent months Warner Bros. invited a select group of creatives in to pitch ideas for what the series could be. They were Martha Hillier, Kathleen Jordan, Tom Moran and Michael Lesslie. Now, the streaming service and Warner Bros. Television have narrowed it to Jordan, Moran and newer addition Francesca Gardiner, sources said.

Deadline broke the news last month that Succession  writer  Francesca Gardiner  is among the finalists. Gardiner was a consulting producer on Seasons 3 and 4 of HBO’s  Succession . Before working on the Jesse Armstrong creation, she was an exec producer of HBO and BBC fantasy co- production   His Dark Materials  and was a co-exec producer of AMC’s  Killing Eve . She has also written on shows including Starz’s  The Rook  and Amazon’s  The Man In The High Castle.

Tom Moran is a British writer, who created Amazon series The Devil’s Hour , which starred Peter Capaldi. He also worked on Amazon sci-fi series The Feed and Rob Lowe cop drama Wild Bill .

It’s an interesting mix of Brits and Americans, most of whom have some experience working with streamers and many of whom have shepherded projects in the sci-fi/fantasy space.

We’ve heard that the group of writers were commissioned by Max to create pitches for a series reflecting their take on the IP. Rowling is understood to be involved in this pitching process. The trio will be able to hone in on their pitches for the next couple of months, with a decision on who gets the job expected in June. 

When will the Harry Potter series be released?

The series is expected to be on air in 2026, according to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

“We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter,” Zaslav told Wall Street analysts on the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call. “I was in London a few weeks ago with Casey [Bloys, CEO of HBO] and Channing [Dungey, chairperson of Warner Bros Television] and we spent some real time with JK and her team,” he enthused. “Both sides just thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great.”

Given the results on that earnings call, WBD needs Harry Potter’s magic sooner rather than later.

Ditto J.K. Rowling, whose production company posted a 74% drop in profits in 2022. That rebounded somewhat after the stage version of  Harry Potter  And The Cursed Child  proved to be a post-pandemic crowd pleaser. The author got a $10.5 million paycheck for it in 2023.

The success of the stage show demonstrates that there’s still an appetite for Hogwarts-related content. Likewise the massive hit that is Hogwarts Legacy, which became the bestselling video game of 2023 , moving 22 million units. (That’s fantastic, but for comparison Rowling’s seven bestselling  Harry Potter  books have moved 600M copies worldwide.)

At a Goldman Sachs conference last year, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made pointed out the need for more Hogwarts magic explicitly. Ignoring the Harry-less Fantastic Beasts films, the CEO insisted the boy wizard presents a huge opportunity, claiming that the IP has been “underused” of late.

“We haven’t done anything with Harry Potter for more than a decade,” he said, before going on to note that when one examines the performance of Warner Bros. over the last 20 years without accounting for it’s big three — Potter , Lord of the Rings and DC — the company’s performance is “relatively flat.”

Zaslav called that type of big-ticket IP “one of the big differentiators of this company.” And he seems to be counting on it to make a big difference.

“When you put those franchises in, it’s the best-performing studio in the world. We need to deploy our best capital, and we need to do it with the best creative people in the world,” he said.

How to watch the series

It will, of course, be on Max once the series is ready. The service has three price tiers: Max Ad Light, which goes for $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year and allows two concurrent streams; Max Ad Free will be priced at $15.99 a month, or $149.99 a year, and will also allow two concurrent streams; and Max Ultimate Ad Free which costs $19.99 a month, or $199.99 a year, and allows access to four concurrent streams.

If you’re in Canada, WBD has struck a multi-year licensing agreement with Crave for the likes of  Harry Potter ,  Game of Thrones ,  the  DC  Universe and  HBO  content.

Which actors are starring in the series? Are any of the original Harry Potter stars returning?

There will be new actors playing the series’ main characters, but no one has been cast yet. Warner Bros. TV Group Chairman Channing Dungey said recently that that casting will come after they find a showrunner.

As for that, Warner Bros. is very likely looking to cast young actors, given that they’re proceeding through Rowling’s books in order. “The tricky part is the first two books, where the kids are on the younger end, around 11 or 12,” said Dungey of the casting process.

“We have been trying to be very close to the vest,” said Bloys. “We haven’t gone out to agencies. We have our own internal process where we’ve been thinking about people but we have not wanted to go out into the world. Now that the news is out there…we’ll start going out to the business.”

As for a return of any of the film franchise’s stars — like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson or Rupert Grint — never say never. It would certainly be a PR boost for the series and, while new actors will be cast in the primary roles, there are always flashforwards or the currently en vogue multiverse plot ploy that could create space for more familiar faces in the series.

But Daniel Radcliffe has said he is fine with sitting on the sidelines.

“My understanding is that they’re trying to very much start fresh and I’m sure whoever is making them will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere,” Radcliffe told ComicBook.com . “So I’m definitely not seeking it out in any way. But I do wish them, obviously, all the luck in the world and I’m very excited to have that torch passed. But I don’t think it needs me to physically pass it.”

Another longtime Potter player who likely won’t be involved is David Yates, who directed the last four movies,  Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix  (2007),  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince  (2009) and  Deathly Hallows Part One and Two  (2010 and 2011). In addition, Yates took on the  Potter  spinoff  Fantastic Beasts  trilogy. He says there has been no conversation about his involvement with the series. And it sounds like he’s ok with that.

“Huge affection and a lovely group of people I worked with,” Yates told Deadline . “But we haven’t had a conversation since we finished it.”

“It’s been about ‘Let’s just park it, and be done for a while,'” he said of the Potter franchise.

“Never say never, I would say, but I’m excited about moving on,” he said.

Will J.K. Rowling be involved in the new Harry Potter TV series?

Yes. A deal for J.K. Rowling’s involvement in the series had been the biggest hurdle in its path to the screen: The author has creative control over any exploitation of her work. That agreement was finalized in 2023.

“Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series,” said Rowling in a statement.

Since Warners launched its streaming service, there’s always been a goal to exploit Warners’ biggest franchise for streaming. Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav, taking the reigns after the merger last year, met with Rowling several times in the UK. He’s even spoken up in support of the author, who has been involved in an ongoing controversy over her comments on transgender issues . Asked about the streaming event about those controversies, Bloys demurred.

“No, I don’t think this is the forum [to discuss that],” he said. “That’s a very online conversation, very nuanced and complicated and not something we’re going to get into.”

“Our priority is what’s on the screen,” Bloys continued. “Obviously, the Harry Potter story is incredibly affirmative and positive and about love and self-acceptance. That’s our priority — what’s on screen.”

As for how close the author will be to the series, Bloys said, “[Rowling] will be involved. She’s an executive producer on the show. Her insights are going to be helpful on that.”

The author’s involvement could prove a hurdle to having the principals from the films involved in the series. Relations between Rowling, Radcliffe and Emma Watson can’t be great, given the author recently said she was “bloody angry” over stances taken by trans rights activists, which she sees being in opposition to women’s rights.

Rowling claimed that “thousands are complicit, not just medics, but the celebrity mouthpieces, unquestioning media and cynical corporations.” Asked specifically whether she would forgive Radcliffe and Watson for their unabashed pro-trans rights stance on the issue Rowling replied, “Celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women’s hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies.”

Bloys was clear, however, that WBD wasn’t entirely dependent on Rowling for the project.

“The TV show is new and we’re excited about that. But, remember, we’ve been in the Potter business for 20 years. This is not a new decision for us, we’re very comfortable being in the Potter business.”

How much will the series cost to produce?

“You know we make shows at this scale with House of the Dragon , Game of Thrones ,” said Bloys. “I imagine will be that scale or higher. The shorter answer is whatever it takes to make a quality show.”

Per Deadline reporting, House of the Dragon cost nearly $200 million and was the subject of HBO’s biggest marketing campaign ever, valued at over $100M in media spend (that’s a combo of ad spot value and hard cash shelled out). So fans can expect a similar outlay for the Potter series “or higher,” according to HBO/Max boss Bloys.

Will there be other Harry Potter-related projects?

“We’re free to do anything we want,” Zaslav has said, before hedging a bit. “Some areas we need to do with J.K., other areas we have the full ability to go forward. This is a full deployment on Max of Harry Potter. We can still develop other properties.”

Deadline understands that there may also be an opportunity for more than one of the above-mentioned writers to be involved and that Max is open to the possibility of developing more than one idea based on  Harry Potter.

How long has this been in the works?

Max and its then-parent company WarnerMedia  started exploring  a potential Harry Potter TV series a couple of years ago. At the time, Warner Bros. appointed Kids, Young Adult and Classics president Tom Ascheim to manage the Wizarding World and Potter franchises, which include theme parks, tours and the $9.1 billion-grossing theatrical library that spans the  Harry Potter  and spinoff  Fantastic Beasts  titles. Under that setup, Ascheim became WarnerMedia’s senior rep in its relationship with Rowling and her representatives, and exploratory conversations for a Max series got underway.

After the Discovery acquisition was completed a year ago, that unit was disbanded and  Ascheim exited the company . However, the importance of the   Harry Potter IP has only grown post-merger.

Zaslav spoke about his family’s own personal connection to the series.

“My wife and I, we read (the Harry Potter books) to each of our three kids,” said Zaslav, going off script at the Max announcement. “It’s really moving, for ten consecutive years, people will see  Harry Potter  on HBO; I mean it’s really something.”
