Handling Money in Dubai.

This post may contain affiliate links.

Dubai, in the country of The United Arab Emirates , is one of the easier countries for travellers to handle their travel money at minimum cost.

We normally tell our readers just to get money out at ATM s or cash points, and in Dubai, you should be able to find ATMs with no withdrawal costs.

Your bank back home may, of course, charge you something for this service. Taking cash out of the bank via a cash machine in Dubai won’t cut into your budget as it can in some other countries (for instance, in Thailand there are fees )

In this post we give you a little insider information on handling cash, exchanging currency, and paying with credit cards and apps in Dubai UAE.

A round-up on money in Dubai, how to take money into Dubai and the best travel tips on travel money and exchange.

Obviously, things change, this information was correct at the time of writing and you’ll need to double-check costs, exchange rates, and fees.

Currency in Dubai

The currency of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates is the UAE Dirham  (Dir) The UAE Dirham is sub-divided into 100 fils. The UAE Dirham can also be called AED or Emirati Dirhams.

The word Dirham comes from the Greek word “drachmae”, meaning “handful”.

The Arabic Dirham can only be used in the UAE.

1 US dollar is approximately 3.67 UAE Dirhams in Dubai.

1 UK pound is approximately 4.5 UAE Dirhams in Dubai.

1 Euro is approximately 3.87 UAE Dirhams in Dubai.

1 Au dollar is approximately 2.49 UAE Dirhams in Dubai

Dubai Bank Notes and Coins

The following bank notes are usually available in Dubai.

Paying With Cash or Card in Dubai UAE

pay with cash or card dubai uae

It’s always a good idea to have some cash on you. In Dubai taxis should all have the equipment necessary to take electronic payments. However, these can sometimes be out of order, so a cash backup is essential.

There are many ways to pay for taxis in Dubai including cash, credit cards, Apple Pay, nol Cards (used on the Dubai Metro and bus system too), or Careem Pay if booked on the app. Careem Pay is approved by the UAE central bank and is a digital wallet system within the UAE.

For haggling in market stalls in the tourist souks along The Creek, cash would be a good idea. Be certain to have small denomination notes and coins as nobody will have change. Taxis can be paid for with various types of card, Google, and Apple Pay, but occeasionaly meters will be broken. Public buses may require cash. Major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are widely accepted in Dubai’s hotels, malls, restaurants and other attractions.

Is Google Wallet or Google Pay Accepted in Dubai UAE

Yes, you can pay using Google Pay in many places in Dubai and the UAE including most large shops, restaurants and hotels that have contactless payment terminals. You will need cash for some small transactions or for tips.

The Best Way to Get United Arab Emirates Dirhams?

currency exchange dubai

You can exchange some money for UAE Dirhams in your home country. Alternatively, bring some cash in your home currency with you. Changing pounds, Euros, or dollars in a currency exchange office at the airport or in exchange offices in Dubai may give you a better rate than anywhere else. Alternatively simply rely on your cards and withdraw Emirati money at cash points or ATMs at the airport.

Airport rates are usually lower than in exchange bureaus, don’t exchange all your cash at the airport.

You may be able to get a better exchange rate in Dubai than in your home country.

Travellers’ cheques are rarely used these days.

Fees on Cash Withdrawal at ATMs in Dubai

Save on every electronic payment.

Ask for funds to be withdrawn in Dubai dihrams. You can normally do this with Agoda when you book your hotel, at ATMs or in any larger shop. The currency conversion rate will generally be better at your home bank.

This goes for just about every country I can think of, charge in the local currency.

Prepaid Travel Money Cards

Some shops will accept prepaid travel money cards with no fee, so they’re worth bringing as backup.

They are a good buy if your home currency is experiencing a real high that you expect to drop for your holiday period.

Lock in that good rate! Check with your own bank to buy these or take a look at this guide to independent prepaid travel money cards , some have fees, some don’t.

More Useful Dubai Information and FAQs

  • Can you book trains and buses before arriving in Dubai? The Etihad Railway which will connect Dubai’s Emirates, is under construction and due to open. At the time of publication you could not easily travel around The Emirates by train, but Dubai has a metro system. Yes, absolutely you can pre-book some forms of transport in Dubai. There is a site called 12 Go Asia which allows you to do this from your home country. That way you have reservations, everything is paid for and you won’t be disappointed by no availability. This service is quite limited in the UAE currently, booking tours and transfers, using the company below is a better option.
  • Can you book tours and activities in Dubai in advance? Again, yes. We are big fans of this site for booking all sorts of tours and transfers . This allows you to pay online with your card, have the backup of a big company with guarantees, and avoid all local scams, rip-offs and haggling.
  • Can you pay for many things using your credit card in Dubai? Yes, in Dubai we often use ultra-modern shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, convenience stores and so on. They will usually accept your credit card, no problem whatsoever. For markets and street food you are more likely to need cash.
  • Is card skimming a problem in Dubai? Nothing like this has ever happened to us in Dubai, it has in Vietnam. Dubai has very low crime rates.
  • Are pickpockets a problem in Dubai? We have never had any problems of this kind in Dubai.. However, it pays to be sensible. Take a look at a few clever anti-theft devices, we give you a link at the bottom of the page. Crime rates in Dubai are some of the lowest in the world. ( source )

Limit Cash Usage

You will need cash in Dubai quite rarely. Try not to use it for big purchases.

Book accommodation and pay for it online, we normally use Agoda for Asia as they are reliable specialists for the region.

It’s annoying to have to find a bank and withdraw cash when you’re travelling, so use your card where you can.

Should You Tip in Dubai?

Tipping is not expected in Dubai as it is in the US. There are no hard and fast rules about tipping in Dubai but it’s always nice to give something to a service provider doing a good job. Aim for around 10% and tip in UAE Dirhams in, cash. Big hotels and restaurants are quite likely to add a service fee to your bill or cheque.

For Americans

You’ve got it lucky! Certain US bank accounts refund cash withdrawal fees in foreign countries, including Thailand. I believe, but don’t know for sure, that you need to submit proof of fees.

We’re not American, so this isn’t something we can fully cover here. Investigate Charles Schwab .

British Credit, Debit and Bank Cards That Give You Zero Fees when you Travel

The UK’s Halifax bank had a card and account that can help you avoid foreign transaction fees.

Cumberland Building Society’s Plus account offered no fees on SOME ACCOUNTS ONLY.

NatWest and RBS Reward accounts offered a summer fee waiver for a limited time.

Obviously, these banks and accounts change all the time, so double-check.

Starling Monzo and Revolut

These 3 app banks, Starling , Monzo and Revolut offer free current accounts.

At the time of writing, Starling had no foreign fees whatsoever on foreign transactions and pays interest on your balance.

Monzo and Revolut allowed cash withdrawals and transactions of up to £200 a month without fees.

There is also Loot card, it gave your first 2 transactions free in 210 countries worldwide.

However, Transferwise, now Wise, is also a good option these days. Payoneer is still a good choice for some circumstances and we do still have one and use it.

The Old Rule, Don’t Carry Too Much Cash – Theft Prevention and Safety

It’s the oldest piece of travel advice out there, don’t get a big wodge of cash out of the bank and stick it in your pocket.

It could be stolen or, more likely, you could lose it. If you have a safe in your hotel room, use it.

We always feel very safe in Dubai, and we don’t worry about theft, but if you’re heading to the big beach tourist spots or enjoying nightlife, souks and markets, it may be wise to take typical precautions.

You could consider some of the money concealment devices below.

If there are 2 of you split the cash between you, some in wallet, some in a bag, some elsewhere, is always a great idea. Just remember where you put it!

You may feel safer with one or more anti-theft travel devices during your time in Thailand. We have a full post on anti theft bags  to keep your money, passport, phone, and more, safe in Thailand.

These bags normally offer RFID blocking, slash-proof internal mesh, wire-enforced straps, lockable zippers and mechanisms to secure the bag to a fixture (for instance your chair or table in a restaurant). Take a look at those in the dedicated post on antitheft bags.

Money in Dubai: A Comprehensive Guide for Tourists

All money matters in dubai, from currency exchange to atm money withdrawal and tipping.

It’s time to talk about money in Dubai. As a popular tourist destination, Dubai attracts millions of visitors each year. Whether you are coming for business or leisure, one of the essential aspects of your trip is money. Dubai is a city of luxury and extravagance, but you will also perfectly manage here on a budget. It is important to understand the currency in Dubai and how to manage your money while you are there. In this comprehensive guide, I will provide you with all the information you need to know about money in Dubai, UAE currency exchange rates, using ATMs and withdrawing money in Dubai, local tipping culture, best payment methods, credit cards and banks .

Overview: Jump Here to Your Favourite Topic

Which currency is used in Dubai

What is the currency in Dubai? The official currency of Dubai is the United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED, Dhs or Dh). The AED is divided into 100 fils. The currency has been in circulation since 1973 when it replaced the Qatar and Dubai riyal.

At the moment, you will find the following coins and banknotes in circulation:

  • Coins : 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 fils and 1 dirham
  • Banknotes : 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 dirhams

As in other countries, the UAE currency features national landmarks and symbols. For example, on the front side of AED 10 and 50 banknotes, you can see, respectively, the khanjar (a traditional dagger) and the Arabian oryx. At the same time, AED 100 and 500 paper notes show the Al-Fahidi Fortress and the Jumeirah Mosque images.

Dubai currency exchange rates

Now that we know that the Dubai currency name is the United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED), you are probably wondering about the exchange rates. When you exchange money, you will see the exchange rate listed in the following format: AED/USD (or the opposite way). The exchange rate can fluctuate slightly based on the market conditions , but if you are coming for a short period, you will not notice significant changes.

I always recommend checking the AED exchange rate to your local currency before travelling to Dubai to ensure that you get the best value for your money. Besides, if you know the Dubai dirham exchange rate, you will be well-prepared to manage your costs during the visit.

Where to check the latest UAE currency exchange rate? You can do it right on this page using a helpful currency converter to the right of the post in the desktop version or below the post if you are viewing it on your smartphone or any other mobile device.

You can find many popular currency pairs in the currency converter:

  • United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) to Euro (EUR)
  • United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) to US Dollar (USD)
  • United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) to British Pound (GBP)
  • United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) to Australian Dollar (AUD)
  • United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) to Canadian Dollar (CAD)
  • United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) to Japanese Yen (JPY)
  • United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) to Indian Rupee (INR), and many more

How to exchange money in Dubai

If you are wondering where to exchange money in Dubai, there are several ways to do it.

As a tourist, you can exchange currency at:

  • Exchange offices
  • Pre-order websites (like Travelex)

Banks, exchange offices and ATM machines can be found in many public places across the city . They all offer reliable exchange rates, but some may charge an additional commission fee, or it will be already included in the buy or sell rate you see (so the rate will be less attractive). The commission may vary from 0.05% to 1.5%.

Have Fun Dubai’s Tip : You can exchange currency at Dubai International Airport (Terminals 1, 2 and 3) , hotels, malls and big supermarkets. Remember that currency exchange rates at airports and hotels are generally less attractive, so I always recommend first checking the current market exchange rate and then comparing it on-site. You can often get a better Dubai money rate somewhere in the city.

Travelex also offers an AED exchange pre-ordering service on their website. Basically, you exchange your currency to UAE dirhams online and choose a pick-up point at Dubai Airport. Online exchange rates can be better than at the airport, so if you are arriving soon, you can also use this option.

How much cash can I bring to Dubai as a tourist

There is no limit to the amount of cash you can bring into Dubai as a tourist. However, if you are carrying more than AED 100,000, you must declare it at customs . It is also important to note that carrying large amounts of cash can be risky, and it is recommended that you use a credit card or other cashless methods instead.

Can I withdraw money in Dubai

Yes, you can withdraw money in Dubai. ATMs are widely available throughout the city, and most accept international debit and credit cards . However, it is important to check with your bank or change settings in the online banking app before you travel to ensure that your card will work in Dubai.

Using ATMs in Dubai

In my opinion, ATMs are the most convenient way to withdraw cash in Dubai. Most ATMs have an English language option and accept international debit and credit cards. However, there will be withdrawal fees that your bank charges per foreign transaction and eventual ATM fees if your home bank does not operate it. Be prepared to pay an average bank transaction fee ranging from 0,5 to 1,5% . Additionally, some ATM machines may have a daily withdrawal limit, so checking with your bank before you travel is important.

How can I pay in Dubai

In Dubai, you can pay for goods and services using multiple ways:

  • Debit and credit cards
  • Mobile payment apps and digital wallets
  • NOL smart card

What are the best credit cards to use in Dubai? Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in the city , and most establishments accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Union Pay. Mobile payment apps and digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay are also gaining popularity in Dubai.

Besides, a NOL card is available in the city — you will need it to use public transportation in Dubai, but you can also top-up certain card types to pay for taxi rides, RTA parking, shopping at multiple stores and museum entries.

Using Bitcoin in Dubai

Dubai is becoming an increasingly popular destination for cryptocurrency enthusiasts. There are several Bitcoin ATMs located throughout the city, and some establishments accept Bitcoin as a form of payment . It is important to note that the legal status of Bitcoin in Dubai is still unclear, and it is recommended that you use the cryptocurrency with caution.

International banks in Dubai

Dubai is home to several international banks, including Citibank, HSBC, BNP Paribas, Royal Bank of Canada and Standard Chartered . These banks offer a wide range of services, including foreign currency accounts, international wire transfers and wealth management services.

What are the popular local UAE banks in Dubai

There are several local banks in Dubai that offer a range of services for tourists. Some of the most popular banks include Emirates NBD, Dubai Islamic Bank, Bank of Sharjah and Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank . These banks offer currency exchange services, ATM services and online banking options.

Tipping in Dubai

Should you tip in Dubai, and how much? Here are a few recommendations to help you understand Dubai’s tipping culture.

  • Tipping is not mandatory in Dubai, but it is appreciated for good service.
  • It is customary to tip between 10-15% of the total bill at restaurants and cafes, for hairdressing and spa treatments.
  • For taxi rides or food delivery, you can round off the amount.
  • Tour guides and drivers will appreciate any amount you give if you wish so.
  • Tipping hotel concierges and bellboys is not obligatory, but anything from AED 3 to 5 will be great.
  • It is important to note that some establishments may include a service charge in the bill, so check before tipping.

Your Guide to Currency in Dubai

Pankaj & Insy Shah/Getty Images

Before you hit the Dubai Mall or dive into Dubai’s vibrant nightlife scene , it’s worth getting a handle on the local currency .

The official currency of Dubai is the United Arab Emirates dirham, which is officially abbreviated to AED and is commonly shortened to Dhs or DH. Each dirham contains 100 fils. Dirham notes are available in denominations of 5 (brown), 10 (green), 20 (blue/green) 50 (purple), 100 (red), 200 (brown), 500 (navy blue) and 1000 (green/blue) dirhams. You’ll generally only see 1 dirham, 50 fils and 25 fils coins in circulation, with most stores rounding up to the nearest 25 fils. Try to carry smaller notes with you—not only are they handy for tipping, it can be hard to get change of anything larger than a 100 dirham note in taxis and some convenience stores.

The History of the Dirham

The United Arab Emirates dirham first came into circulation in May 1973, 18 months after the formation of the UAE. The word ‘dirham’ is derived from the Ottoman unit of mass, ‘dram’, hailing from the ancient Greek coin ‘drachma’, which was widely traded during the Byzantine Empire.

Since 1997, the United Arab Emirates dirham has been pegged to the U.S. dollar at the rate of 1 dollar to 3.6725 dirhams. As most of the world’s currencies aren’t pegged to the dollar, you should expect to see daily fluctuations when trading in anything other than U.S. dollars.

Exchanging Currency in Dubai

You should have no trouble exchanging your local currency into dirhams. The market is tightly regulated here, so there’s little chance of being taken for a ride. And as Dubai is such a massive transit hub, most money exchangers trade in a broad range of currencies from around the world.

For the best rate, exchange a small amount at the airport to cover tips and taxis, then make a larger exchange once you’ve reached the city. Shopping malls are one of the easiest places to exchange money in Dubai, as they generally have banks and money exchange counters. You may wish to shop around for the best rate, as money exchanges often offer a better deal than the banks.

Banks are generally open Saturday–Thursday, 8 a.m.–1 p.m. (closed Fridays), but as Dubai is a late-night city, you’ll find many of the currency outlets in malls stay open until late in the evening. Dubai is also home to thousands of ATMs, conveniently located in shopping malls, metro stations, supermarkets and in air-conditioned cubicles on the street, generally allowing you to withdraw dirhams directly from your personal account for a small fee.

Using Credit Cards in Dubai

While it’s great to have cash on hand for tips, taxis, and bargaining in the souks (markets), you won’t need to carry wads of notes for larger transactions. Major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are widely accepted in Dubai’s hotels, shops and restaurants.

Tipping in Dubai

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to tipping in Dubai, so while it is customary to tip it is by no means compulsory. As a guide, if you’re happy with the service at a restaurant, bar or café, tip your server 10 to 15 percent, even if a service charge is noted on the receipt.

For taxis, round up to the nearest note or offer a 5 or 10 dirham note. Most taxis don’t accept credit cards. Hotel staff and valets often receive 5 to 10 dirhams as a tip, more if they are tasked with carrying heavy luggage.

For spa and beauty treatments, 5 to 10 dirhams is sufficient for short treatments, such as a manicure, but you may want to give 10 percent for longer treatments, such as haircuts and massages.

In Dubai, you can get almost anything delivered at any time of day or night. Fancy a can of soda or a snack at 3 a.m.? Just call down to the nearest convenience store. To show your appreciation for the service, allow your delivery driver to keep the change or offer 5 to 10 dirhams, even if a delivery charge is added to your order.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the shining crowns of the UAE and attract the bulk of tourists and expats. The Emirati dirham is the currency of the region. How we chose these accounts

Using debit cards.

A debit card can be used to make over-the-counter purchases and cash withdrawals from ATMs. Like credit cards and travel cards, debit card transactions are protected against fraud and unauthorised transactions.

Using prepaid travel cards

UAE dirhams are supported by all travel cards issued in the UK. These cards allow you to avoid currency conversion fees and lock in a competitive exchange rate before your trip. Many also come with an additional, emergency card in case the first one is lost or stolen. A travel card can be used to make over-the-counter purchases and ATM withdrawals in the Emirates.

  • Tip: Order a travel card online so it has your name printed on the front.

Using credit cards

Visa and Mastercard credit cards can be used without issue at businesses in the UAE. Some hotels in Abu Dhabi and Dubai require a credit card for deposits, so it might be good to carry one as a backup.

  • Tip: Some users preload these products with their own money to use like a debit card. The cash advance fee applies regardless of whether the card has a positive balance and the Mastercard and Visa no liability guarantees do not apply if you’re the victim of credit card fraud.

Using traveller’s cheques

It is probably better to take a travel-friendly debit or prepaid card for ATM withdrawals. Banks and exchange offices will charge a commission to cash traveller’s cheques and you can get a better rate from the ATM.

Paying with cash in the UAE

You can use your credit card, debit card or travel card in many places throughout the UAE. Smaller businesses such as cafeterias and cafes, some public transportation, street vendors and souks are all cash only. ATMs are widespread in the cities, you will have many chances to withdraw cash if you need it.

Accommodation, food and holiday activities can be expensive in the UAE. There are less than a handful of hostels, although value 2- and 3-star hotels are widely available in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Because the UAE is filled with many different nationalities, food from all over the world is available for cheap. As well as expensive theme park visits and sightseeing trips, there are also ways for you to explore Abu Dhabi and Dubai for free.

*Prices are indicative and subject to change.

There are 2 prepaid travel cards suited to spend in Emirati dirhams. You’ll incur currency conversion fees with the rest and American Express acceptance is touch-and-go in the UAE. A debit card can be a cost-effective way to withdraw money and make over-the-counter purchases if you have the right one. Plus, you could consider a travel credit card for the fee waivers and travel perks.

You can use Visa and Mastercard in the tourist and expatriate centres of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. While many smaller businesses and taxis now take cards, you will need cash at some point on your travels. ATMs are widespread and you’ll see some familiar names like Barclays and HSBC.

A quick summary of travel money options for the UAE

This table is a general summary of the travel money products in the market. Features and benefits can vary between cards.

Exchanging cash

If you have British pounds you want to change when you arrive, avoid exchanging cash at your hotel or at the airport. You will get a better rate if you wait until you get into the city. Have a look in shopping centres for exchange offices.

ATM withdrawals

Some of the banks you’ll recognise in the UAE include Citi, HSBC and Barclays Bank. International banks will give you a higher ATM withdrawal limit than local banks. Try to select a withdrawal amount that will give you notes in smaller denominations. These machines have a tendency to dispense large bills, which can be a problem to cash outside your hotel.

You can find ATMs in the international airports, you can make a withdrawal once you go through customs and before you get in a taxi.

Example: Dean in Abu Dhabi

Dean visited Abu Dhabi so he could attend the F1 Grand Prix. He spent about 4 nights in Abu Dhabi and 2 nights in Dubai before flying back home. He was at the Yas Marina circuit to watch the practice and qualifying laps and the race itself. Dean says that at the end of each day, there were performances from major artists such as Florence and the Machine.

Where could you use your cards?

Dean says he could use his cards in most places he visited. He made a withdrawal from an ATM when he landed but he says he used his credit card to pay for the taxi from the airport and for a deposit when he checked into the hotel. When he ventured into the city, he could use his travel debit card all the time except for when he ate in a few of the smaller restaurants – he didn't ask if they took cards but he thinks there's a good chance they do. He adds that a few of the taxis he took were cash only.

What about ATM withdrawals?

Dean only made 2 ATM withdrawals. The first time was in the airport and the second time was when he spotted a Citibank ATM in the Abu Dhabi Mall. He says there was no issue with ATM acceptance or availability. There was always an ATM around the corner.

Do you have any tips?

Dean says there is a service charge of 10% at places like hotels and restaurants included in the bill, but he says it can't hurt to round taxis up to the nearest 5 dirhams either.

* This is a fictional, but realistic, example.

You can get a better rate of exchange if you withdraw cash from an ATM in the UAE using a low-fee travel account. If you want some cash in your pocket when you land, these institutions can sell you dirhams.

The travel money products on this guide work best when they’re used together. Depending on the card, you could take advantage of interest-free days, complimentary insurance and an emergency line of credit with a credit card.

However, as you can’t use credit cards for ATM withdrawals, you’ll need to consider a travel-friendly debit card or prepaid card. Fees aside, spread your travel budget across a couple of different travel money types. This way, a lost or stolen card won’t derail your trip.

What is a travel money card?

A travel money card is a card you can use for secure and convenient payments and withdrawals overseas.

You can use a travel money card to tap and pay in stores and restaurants, with a wallet like Apple Pay, or to make ATM withdrawals so you'll always have a bit of cash in your pocket when you travel.

Although there are lots of different travel money cards on the market, all of which are unique, one similarity you'll spot is that the features and fees have always been optimised for international use. That might mean you get a better exchange rate compared to using your normal card overseas, or that you run into fewer fees for common international transactions like ATM withdrawals.

Travel money cards also offer distinct benefits when it comes to security. Your travel money card isn't linked to your United States Dollar everyday account, so even if you were unlucky and had your card stolen, your primary bank account remains secure.

Travel money vs prepaid card vs travel credit card

It's helpful to know that you'll be able to pick from several different types of travel cards, depending on your priorities and preferences. Travel cards commonly include:

  • Travel debit cards
  • Travel prepaid cards
  • Travel credit cards

They all have distinct benefits when you head off to Dubai or elsewhere in the world, but they do work a bit differently.

Travel debit and prepaid cards are usually linked to an online account, and may come from specialist digital providers - like the Wise card. These cards are usually flexible and cheap to use. You'll be able to manage your account and card through an app or on the web.

Travel credit cards are different and may suit different customer needs. As with any other credit card, you may need to pay an annual fee or interest and penalties depending on how you manage your account - but you could also earn extra rewards when spending in a foreign currency, or travel benefits like free insurance for example. Generally using a travel credit card can be more expensive compared to a debit or prepaid card - but it does let you spread out the costs of your travel across several months if you'd like to and don't mind paying interest to do so.

What is a prepaid travel money card best for?

Let's take a look at the advantages of using a prepaid travel money card for travellers going to Dubai. While each travel card is a little different, you'll usually find some or all of the following benefits:

  • Hold and exchange foreign currencies - allowing you to lock in exchange rates and set a travel budget before you leave
  • Convenient for spending in person and through mobile wallets like Apple Pay, as well as for cash withdrawals
  • You may find you get a better exchange rate compared to your bank - and you'll usually be able to avoid any foreign transaction fee, too
  • Travel cards are secure as they're not linked to your everyday USD account - and because you can make ATM withdrawals when you need to, you can also avoid carrying too much cash at once

Overall, travel cards offer flexible and low cost ways to avoid bank foreign transaction and international ATM fees, while accessing decent exchange rates.

How to choose the best travel card for Dubai

We've picked out 5 great travel cards available in the US - but there are also more options available, which can make choosing a daunting task. Some things to consider when picking a travel card for Dubai include:

  • What exchange rates does the card use? Choosing one with the mid-market rate or as close as possible to it is usually a smart plan
  • What fees are unavoidable? For example, ATM charges or top up fees for your preferred top up methods
  • Does the card support a good range of currencies? Getting a card which allows you to hold and spend in AED can give you the most flexibility, but it's also a good idea to pick a card with lots of currency options, so you can use it again in future, too
  • Are there any other charges? Check in particular for foreign transaction fees, local ATM withdrawal fees, inactivity fees and account close fees

Ultimately the right card for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences.

What makes a good travel card for Dubai

The best travel debit card for Dubai really depends on your personal preferences and how you like to manage your money.

Overall, it pays to look for a card which lets you minimise fees and access favourable exchange rates - ideally the mid-market rate. While currency exchange rates do change all the time, the mid-market rate is a good benchmark to use as it’s the one available to banks when trading on wholesale markets. Getting this rate, with transparent conversion fees, makes it easier to compare costs and see exactly what you’re paying when you spend in AED.

Other features and benefits to look out for include low ATM withdrawal fees, complimentary travel insurance, airport lounge access or emergency cash if your card is stolen. It’s also important to look into the security features of any travel card you might pick for Dubai. Look for a card which uses 2 factor authentication when accessing the account app, which allows you to set instant transaction notifications, and which has easy ways to freeze, unfreeze and cancel your card with your phone.

For Dubai in particular, choosing a card which offers contactless payments and which is compatible with mobile wallets like Apple Pay could be a good plan. Card payments are extremely popular in Dubai - so having a card which lets you tap and pay easily can speed things up and make it more convenient during your trip.

Ways to pay in Dubai

Cash and card payments - including contactless, mobile wallet, debit, credit and prepaid card payments - are the most popular ways to pay globally.

In Dubai card payments are common in most situations. You’ll be able to make Chip and PIN or contactless payments or use your favourite mobile wallet like Apple Pay to tap and pay on the go. It’s still worth having a little cash on you just in case - and for the odd situations where cash is more convenient, such as when tipping or buying a small item in a market.

Which countries use AED?

If you have AED, you should be able to use it in a few countries. You may decide to keep your travel card topped up with a balance for this trip to Dubai or for the next time you’re headed somewhere which uses AED.

What should you be aware of when travelling to Dubai

You’re sure to have a great time in Dubai - but whenever you’re travelling abroad it's worth putting in a little advance thought to make sure everything is organised and your trip goes smoothly. Here are a few things to think about:

1. Double check the latest entry requirements and visas - rules can change abruptly, so even if you’re been to Dubai before it’s worth looking up the most recent entry requirements so you don’t have any hassle on the border

2. Plan your currency exchange and payment methods - you can change USD to AED before you travel to Dubai if you’d like to, but as card payments are common, and ATMs widely available, you can actually leave it until you arrive to get everything sorted as long as you have a travel money card. Top up your travel money card in USD and either exchange to AED in advance or at the point of payment, and make ATM withdrawals whenever you need cash. Bear in mind that currency exchange at the airport will be expensive - so hold on until you reach Dubai to make an ATM withdrawal in AED if you can.

3. Get clued up on any health or safety concerns - get travel insurance before you leave the US so you have peace of mind. It’s also worth reading up on any common scams or issues experienced by tourists. These tend to change over time, but may include things like rip off taxis or tour agents which don’t offer fair prices or adequate services.

Conclusion - Best travel cards for Dubai

Ultimately the best travel card for your trip to Dubai will depend on how you like to manage your money. Use this guide to get some insights into the most popular options out there, and to decide which may suit your specific needs.

Choosing the Best Currency to Carry while Preparing for a Trip to Dubai

Preparing for a Trip to Dubai: Choosing the Best Currency to Carry

Dubai, the ‘City of Gold’, is a dazzling blend of tradition and modernity, attracting millions with its skyscrapers, malls, historic souks, and beaches. While exploring this vibrant city, from shopping at the Mall of the Emirates to dining near the Burj Khalifa, effective financial planning is crucial. Managing your finances well is key to fully experiencing Dubai’s offerings and avoiding financial pitfalls.

What is the best type of currency to carry while visiting Dubai? The most convenient currency to carry in Dubai is the UAE Dirham (AED). It’s accepted everywhere in the city, providing hassle-free transactions for travelers. Although ATMs and currency exchange services are readily available, having AED on hand is ideal for all purchases and services.

In this guide, we’ll delve deep into making the right currency choices for your trip and describe what currency to use in Dubai, so you can focus on making memories, not monetary concerns.

Table of Contents

Understanding dubai’s official currency, introduction to the united arab emirates dirham (aed).

Choosing the Best Currency to Carry in Dubai trip

Symbol and Basic Currency Details

  • Symbol: The Dirham is symbolized as “د.إ” in Arabic and often represented as “AED” or “Dhs” in common usage, especially in price tags and receipts.
  • Denominations: The Dirham is subdivided into 100 smaller units called “fils”. Coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 fils, and 1 Dirham. It’s worth noting that smaller denominations like 1 fils or 5 fils are less commonly used due to their low value.

What’s important for travelers?

  • Exchange Rates: While the AED is pegged to the US dollar, making its value relatively stable, it’s crucial to keep an eye on exchange rates. As of the last update, the exchange rate was approximately 3.67 AED to 1 USD but always check for current rates before making significant transactions.
  • Availability: Given Dubai’s status as a global hub, AED is readily available in currency exchange outlets worldwide. However, rates in your home country might not be as favorable as those found in Dubai.
  • Acceptance: While major credit cards are widely accepted in Dubai, carrying a certain amount of Dirhams is essential for places that don’t accept cards or for smaller transactions at local markets or souks.

Benefits of Carrying the UAE Dirham (AED)

  • Quick Payments: Carrying the AED ensures that you can pay for goods and services promptly. Whether you’re grabbing a quick snack at a local eatery, paying for a taxi ride, or purchasing souvenirs at a bustling market, having Dirhams in hand makes transactions seamless.
  • No Hassle of Currency Conversion: With AED in your wallet, you don’t have to pause and calculate conversion rates every time you make a purchase. This means more time enjoying your trip and less time crunching numbers.
  • Universal Acceptance: While international credit and debit cards are popular in malls and high-end establishments, local vendors, especially in traditional markets or souks, might only accept cash. The AED ensures that you’re always prepared, no matter where you shop or dine.
  • Tip-Friendly: In Dubai, while tipping isn’t mandatory, it’s appreciated. Having Dirhams on hand makes it easier to tip service staff, like bellboys, valets, or waitstaff, showing appreciation for their service.
  • Stable Value: The AED is pegged to the US dollar, which ensures its value remains relatively stable. By converting your money to Dirhams at the onset of your trip, you lock in your exchange rate, protecting you from potential fluctuations that might occur with other currencies during your stay.
  • Budgeting Simplicity: By having a fixed amount of AED, it’s easier to set and stick to a daily budget. You can gauge your spending and avoid unexpected expenses related to currency conversion fees or rate changes.

Foreign Currency Alternatives

  • US Dollar (USD): Given that the AED is pegged to the US Dollar, many businesses in Dubai are familiar with the currency. While you might not get an exchange rate as favorable as at currency exchange centers, you can still comfortably use USD in most places.
  • Euro (EUR): As Europe is one of Dubai’s significant tourist sources, the Euro is a well-recognized and accepted currency in many establishments.
  • British Pound (GBP): With strong ties between the UAE and the UK, the British Pound is another currency that’s familiar to merchants in Dubai. Tourists from the UK will find it relatively easy to use GBP in various locations.

Choosing the Best Currency to Carry in Dubai

  • Widespread Acceptance: Major international credit and debit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, are accepted at hotels, malls, and most restaurants and shops in Dubai.
  • ATM Access: There’s a vast network of ATMs throughout Dubai where visitors can withdraw AED using their international cards. However, be mindful of transaction fees and exchange rates.
  • Safety and Security: Carrying cards reduces the need for large amounts of cash, offering a safer way to manage your finances while traveling. Moreover, many credit cards offer travel perks, insurance, and protection against theft or loss.
  • Rising Popularity: Mobile payments have gained immense popularity in Dubai. Platforms like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay are commonly used in retail and dining establishments.
  • Local Digital Wallets: Platforms such as Beam Wallet, Emirates Digital Wallet (Klip), and Etisalat Wallet are tailored for use within the UAE and provide various offers and cashback options for users.
  • Efficiency and Promotions: Digital payments often come with the advantage of quick checkouts, promotional offers, and discounts, making them an attractive option for savvy travelers.
  • Government Initiatives: The government of Dubai has launched several initiatives to integrate blockchain technology into the city’s financial services, which indicates a growing acceptance of cryptocurrency.
  • Crypto-Friendly Businesses: An increasing number of businesses, especially those targeting tech-savvy and international clientele, are starting to accept cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum as a form of payment.
  • Legal Framework: Dubai is working on creating a legal framework that aims to regulate the use of cryptocurrencies, making transactions more secure and reliable for users.
  • Tourism and Crypto: In an effort to attract a diverse range of visitors, some luxury hotels and services in Dubai are beginning to accept digital currencies, providing an innovative payment solution for tech-centric travelers.

  • Convenience: One of the most obvious places to exchange money is at the airport. It’s the first point of contact for many tourists, and exchange counters are easily accessible. Perfect for those who need immediate cash for initial expenses like transportation.
  • Exchange Rates: While airport exchange counters offer the advantage of convenience, they often have less favorable exchange rates compared to their city counterparts. Additionally, they may charge higher commission fees.
  • Better Rates: Downtown Dubai and other popular tourist areas have numerous currency exchange offices that typically offer more competitive rates than the airport.
  • Reputability: Stick to recognized and well-reviewed exchange offices. Avoid street-side vendors or unofficial exchanges. Some popular and reputable chains include Al Ansari Exchange, UAE Exchange, and Al Rostamani Exchange.
  • Service Fees: Many downtown exchange offices don’t charge commissions or service fees, which means you get more value for your money.
  • Planning Ahead: If you prefer planning, consider exchanging a small amount of currency before leaving your home country. This ensures you have enough for immediate expenses upon arrival without resorting to airport exchanges.
  • Comparison: Research and compare rates at local banks and currency exchange providers to get the best deal.
  • Convenience: ATMs are ubiquitous in Dubai, found in malls, streets, hotels, and other tourist attractions.
  • Fair Exchange Rates: ATMs often provide a bank’s exchange rate, which can be more favorable than those at currency exchange offices or airports.
  • Safety: Withdrawing from an ATM means you don’t need to carry a large amount of cash while traveling.
  • Fees: Be mindful of transaction fees that your home bank might charge for international withdrawals. Additionally, the local bank operating the ATM might have its own fee.
  • Withdrawal Limits: ATMs may have daily withdrawal limits, which can be inconvenient if you need a large amount of cash.

Tips for Travelers

  • Taxis: While many taxis accept card payments, drivers may appreciate and prefer cash. Plus, in the rare event of a card machine malfunction, having cash ensures a smooth journey.
  • Local Markets: Shopping at traditional souks or local markets is an experience not to be missed. These places often operate on cash, especially when bargaining is involved.
  • Planning: Keep an eye on currency conversion rates a few weeks before your trip. This will give you an idea of the best times to exchange money.
  • Apps & Websites: Use reliable financial news websites or currency converter apps for real-time updates.
  • Savings: Foreign transaction fees can add up, especially if you’re making multiple purchases daily. A travel-friendly card can save you a significant amount in the long run.
  • Benefits: Many travel cards offer added perks such as travel insurance, rewards points, and lounge access. Research and choose one that aligns with your travel habits.
  • Local Bank Charges: Some local banks in Dubai may charge a fee for international card withdrawals. Check the ATM for any notifications regarding this.
  • Your Home Bank: Your own bank might also charge you for international transactions. It’s wise to inform them of your travel dates and inquire about any potential fees.
  • Withdraw Wisely: Instead of making several small withdrawals, consider withdrawing a larger amount less frequently to minimize fees.

Potential Financial Scams to Watch Out For in Dubai

1. overcharging in touristy areas, 2. unofficial money exchangers offering “too good to be true” rates, 3. common scams targeting tourists.

Dubai, with its awe-inspiring skyline, lavish shopping malls, and unparalleled luxury, promises an experience like no other. But as with any global destination, the key to truly enjoying the city’s offerings lies in meticulous preparation, particularly on the financial front.

Being financially prepared does more than just ensure you don’t run out of money halfway through your trip. It means being aware of the local currency, understanding where and how to get the best exchange rates, and most importantly, being vigilant about potential pitfalls and scams that might mar the experience. Equipping oneself with knowledge about the UAE Dirham, the benefits of carrying it, and the various alternatives available can significantly simplify transactions during your stay.

Furthermore, understanding where to exchange money and being prudent about it can save you from unnecessary expenses. Awareness of potential financial scams ensures that you’re always a step ahead, safeguarding yourself from deceitful practices.

In wrapping up, as you embark on your journey to the City of Gold, remember that being financially astute is as essential as packing your passport. It’s not just about having enough money but being smart with it. With the right preparation, you can immerse yourself fully in all that Dubai has to offer, ensuring a journey that is as hassle-free as it is unforgettable. Safe travels and may your adventures in Dubai be filled with wonder and joy!

Dubai is a cosmopolitan city and a diverse melting pot where almost all attires and cultural expressions are accepted. Swimwear is permissible at beaches, waterparks, public pools and spa areas but is not considered appropriate in areas such as business districts and shopping malls.

Dressing conservatively is appreciated in Dubai's historic neighbourhoods and places of worship. There are specific requirements for entering a mosque, like wearing clothing that covers shoulders, arms and legs – and headscarves for women.

Marhaba! Dubai is a warm and friendly city and you will come across many people who will greet you with a smile and wish you well. A handshake is customary, but do note it is typically accepted that this should be initiated by women.

Public displays of affection are best kept to a minimum. Holding hands is acceptable, but kissing and hugging in public areas is not permitted.

Alcohol is served in licensed establishments such as hotels, bars and specialised shops to those over 21 years of age. However, drunk and disorderly conduct and drunk driving are not acceptable. Use or possession of illegal drugs is also strictly prohibited.

Many medicines used worldwide are readily available in pharmacies and hospitals across Dubai, but as in most countries, there are some medications which are restricted or prohibited for use in the UAE.

The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) has full details of controlled or prohibited medications, plus information on what documents you need to carry with you if you need to bring a controlled medication into Dubai. MOHAP also issues a permit to import medicines into the UAE, which you can apply for on their website .

While the permit is optional, it is strongly recommended to obtain it prior to your trip as it will help ensure you have all the correct information and documents. You must also bring your official prescription from the issuing authority of where you are receiving treatment. Please note you can carry medicines for a maximum period of three months. If you have any questions, or want to check the status of a particular medication, contact your local UAE embassy, or get in touch with MOHAP .

To tip or not to tip? The short answer is, there are no rules when it comes to tipping in Dubai. How much you tip varies from profession to profession, and is also largely down to personal preference. It is customary to offer a little extra in most cases, but it certainly isn’t compulsory. Everyone arrives in Dubai with their own customs and expectations, but one thing that's always consistent is the high level of service.

Your travel money card isn't linked to your British Pound everyday account, so even if you were unlucky and had your card stolen, your primary bank account remains secure.

You'll be able to manage your account and card through an app, although you can also often add money in person by visiting a branch - we've picked out the Post Office and the Travelex travel card as popular prepaid cards with a branch network in the UK, for example.

  • You may find you get a better exchange rate compared to your bank - and you'll usually be able to avoid any foreign transaction fee, too
  • Travel cards are secure as they're not linked to your everyday GBP account - and because you can make ATM withdrawals when you need to, you can also avoid carrying too much cash at once

Overall, travel cards offer flexible and low cost ways to avoid bank foreign transaction and international ATM fees, while accessing decent exchange rates.

How to choose the best travel card for Dubai

We've picked out 5 great travel cards available in the UK - but there are also more options available, which can make choosing a daunting task.

If you're looking for a low cost card with the mid-market rate, which you can use in 150+ countries, the Wise card may be a good fit. If you'd prefer to pay a monthly fee to get higher no-fee transaction limits, take a look at Wise. And if you need to get a card in a hurry, check out a travel card from a provider with a physical branch network, like the Post Office card or the Travelex travel money card.

2. Plan your currency exchange and payment methods - you can change GBP to AED before you travel to Dubai if you’d like to, but as card payments are common, and ATMs widely available, you can actually leave it until you arrive to get everything sorted as long as you have a travel money card. Top up your travel money card in GBP and either exchange to AED in advance or at the point of payment, and make ATM withdrawals whenever you need cash. Bear in mind that currency exchange at the airport will be expensive - so hold on until you reach Dubai to make an ATM withdrawal in AED if you can.

3. Get clued up on any health or safety concerns - get travel insurance before you leave the UK so you have peace of mind.

Your travel money card isn't linked to your Malaysian ringgit everyday account, so even if you were unlucky and had your card stolen, your primary bank account remains secure.

You'll be able to manage your account and card through an app, although you can also often add money via the web or, if the card has physical branches, in-branch.

  • You may find you get a better exchange rate compared to your bank - and you'll usually be able to avoid any foreign transaction fee, too
  • Travel cards are secure as they're not linked to your everyday MYR account - and because you can make ATM withdrawals when you need to, you can also avoid carrying too much cash at once

Overall, travel cards offer flexible and low cost ways to avoid bank foreign transaction and international ATM fees, while accessing decent exchange rates.

How to choose the best travel card for Dubai

We've picked out 4 great travel cards available in Malaysia - but there are also more options available, which can make choosing a daunting task.

2. Plan your currency exchange and payment methods - you can change MYR to AED before you travel to Dubai if you’d like to, but as card payments are common, and ATMs widely available, you can actually leave it until you arrive to get everything sorted as long as you have a travel money card. Top up your travel money card in MYR and either exchange to AED in advance or at the point of payment, and make ATM withdrawals whenever you need cash. Bear in mind that currency exchange at the airport will be expensive - so hold on until you reach Dubai to make an ATM withdrawal in AED if you can.

3. Get clued up on any health or safety concerns - get travel insurance before you leave Malaysia so you have peace of mind.

Different rental companies have different policies, so it’s a good idea to check with the rental company you plan to use to confirm their requirements. Some rental companies may also require a passport or other form of identification, so be sure to bring these with you when you go to pick up your rental car.

Keep in mind that having a credit card can make the rental process smoother and may provide additional benefits, such as collision insurance or roadside assistance. If you’re planning to rent a car in Dubai, it’s a good idea to consider obtaining a credit card if you don’t already have one.

The currency in Dubai and all of the United Arab Emirates is the Dirham (AED). The Dirham is fixed to the USD but will fluctuate against other currencies.

  • The fixed-rate is $1USD = 3.6725AED

You will find it written as AED, DH or Dhs – all mean the same thing. The notes come in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 & 1000 AED denominations. Don’t be surprised if an ATM spits out large denomination notes, and you then need to find a shop willing to break it for you!

Each Dirham is divided into 100 fils – there are 50 and 25 fil coins (small denominations are rarely seen and no longer in circulation). You will usually find shops round to the nearest half dirham to give you change.

Wave Pass for cashless payment is slowly catching on, though not everywhere. You will still want some walk-around cash as well as take debit or credit cards with you. Always choose to be charged on a credit card in AED, not your local currency, as your bank will charge you an extortionate exchange rate.

Currency exchange in Dubai

Given the vast expatriate population in Dubai and the UAE, there are lots of cash exchange shops available in the UAE. Do not pay airport prices! You can get cash out at an ATM or from a currency exchange in a shopping mall with your photo identification.

In January 2018, the UAE government introduced VAT (Value Added Tax) at 5% . VAT should be included in the price you pay for any goods and services in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates.

You can get the VAT Refunded on certain purchases via the Tax Refund for Tourists Scheme – learn more here.

This is largely variable on where you set out from and how far in advance you book.  You can search for cheap flights here:

Top Tip: Don’t just search for Emirates flights. Whilst the giant carrier is a top airline, there can be cheaper options; use a pricing tool such as Skyscanner to see all direct and indirect options, as well as budget carriers that may be able to get you into other UAE airports much cheaper.

We explain here how to get between Abu Dhabi and Dubai should yuou choose to land in AUH

Whilst you can find some of the world’s most expensive and luxury hotels in Dubai, there are plenty of other budget options too.

Price is hugely variable on location and number of guests (upgrading to a suite or 2/3 bedroom apartments can substantially add to the cost). Also, look out for busy travel periods; during popular holiday times prices will substantially increase.

You can search for prices on the likes of booking com. Their search features are second to none on the online market and make it easy to compare both in map view and with hotel features by those who like to self-plan their trips.

  • The best areas to stay in Dubai we discuss in a lot more detail here.

Bear in mind that quoted prices almost always don’t include the municipality charges, service charges and VAT. These can add >20% to your final price for your Dubai accommodation.

You can read our complete guide to hotel and restaurant tourist taxes here

Are there any budget hotel options in Dubai?

Yes! Don’t be mistaken into thinking everything in Dubai has to be about glitz and glamour. With only a few small compromises, perhaps on location, there are still plenty of hotels in the budget range, suitable for singles, couples through to families for under 200 AED per night.

We suggest you search the Deira and Bur Dubai areas as they are older and less expensive than the Downtown or Jumeirah areas of the city.

You can find our complete guide to best areas to stay in Dubai here.

There are also hostel options available in Dubai – though note many are male or female only if you’re travelling as a couple/family.

Our full listing of budget accommodation options in Dubai is coming soon!

Food and restaurants come in all different price categories. It really depends if you are coming for a romantic getaway , a solo adventure or having a family to cater for.  You can find it all in Dubai, so it’s totally up to you how much you spend in Dubai.

The most practical dining options for most tourists is around hotels and malls where you can get a huge variety of cuisines and price points from basic takeaway dishes in a food court to fine dining.

We have a detailed Dubai dining guide here.

Average Dubai restaurant prices

This is always subject to change, but here are some average prices you can expect to pay at a mall or hotel family dining establishment (as of 2022):

  • Soft drinks:  18 to 25 AED
  • Children’s meal (with drink & dessert): 25 to 50 AED
  • Main meal dish: 50 to 100 AED
  • Salad: 40 to 60 AED
  • Large Pizza : 40 to 60 AED
  • Medium-sized coffee: 19 AED to 25 AED
  • Big Mac Meal: 23 AED

Dining out in Dubai Traditonal Food

There are plenty of ways to get food cheaper if you are willing to self-cater or shop outside of the main touristy areas.

Saving tip . If you’re going to be dining on several occasions, get your hands on the Entertainer App .  This has dine-in and delivery discount vouchers, which normally pay for themselves within a few meals, especially if you are dining as a group.

We talk about all the handy apps you might want for Dubai here

Another good value option for meals in Dubai can be a Brunch experience. These all-you-can-eat style dining experiences include your food and drinks, so can be a great way to get a lot of value for money (and trust me, you won’t need dinner!)

Traditionally Brunch was a Friday afternoon affair, but with the change of the weekend and dining dynamic in Dubai, you will increasingly find great night brunches appear, as well as Sunday afternoons for a more family-orientated affair.

How much does alcohol cost in Dubai?

Alcohol is available for tourists to buy at licensed premises.  This used to be restricted to bars within hotels but is now much more widely accepted.

You can read more about Dubai’s alcohol and drinking rules here.

You can expect to pay at an average-priced hotel bar:

  • Beer Pint : 35 to 50 AED
  • House spirit: 40 to 50AED
  • Glass of wine: 40 to 50 AED
  • Basic cocktail: 50 to 60 AED

This is hugely variable by location though and if you’re visiting during a happy hour special – which can bring drinks down to around 35AED or 2-for-1 specials.

We have a complete guide here to Dubai’s rooftop bar scene and happy hours.

Relative to other countries around the world, Dubai’s public transport and taxis are not overly expensive, but this may depend on how far out of the city you choose to stay.

The minimum cab fare is 12AED, which includes 5 AED flagfall (10AED if booked) and 1.82AED per kilometre.

Public transport in Dubai requires you to purchase a Nol card and pre-load payment. Costs vary on the number of zones you travel. Fares start from 4 AED on a regular Nol card.

You can read our complete guide to Dubai public transport and pricing here.

You may be surprised just how many of Dubai’s activities are free or really cheap – definitely look to balance these with the paid activities to keep your budget under control.

Day trips and excursions are no doubt going to cost.  But attractions such as theme park tickets can be cheaper than some of their overseas counterparts.

A good way to save is getting the Dubai Pass by iVenture.   We give a full rundown of all its benefits and how the card works here , or try the GoCity Dubai Pass , great value if you’re visiting Dubai & Abu Dhabi

How expensive is it to visit ‘At The Top’ in Burj Khalifa?

The cheapest tickets which get you to levels 124 & 125 are 149 AED for adults and 114 AED for children.

This is for non-primetime slots, pre-booked in advance. This can substantially increase for fast-track tickets to 378 AED, or if you are after a bubbly package with access to the lounges on levels 152-154 with refreshments and entertainment, you can look at paying 650 AED per person. And dinner at At.Mosphere, wow!

We have a complete guide of what to expect and how to plan your trip to the Burj Khalifa here .

How expensive are theme parks in Dubai?

The theme parks at Dubai Parks & Resorts cost, on average, 295 AED for a one-day one-park pass or 355 AED for a two-park pass; it’s quite easy though, to find 2-4-1 special deals.

A day out at Aquaventure, at Atlantis, will also cost 295 AED per adult, with access to the Lost Chambers aquarium to 355 AED.

Get Your Guide offers some combination tickets that can help you save (we also love their cancellation policy and the fact you can keep all your ticket bookings on your phone).

If going to one of the big waterparks is the focus of your trip, consider staying at that hotel, as you can get an entry for free. For Aquaventure, you can stay at Atlantis the Palm ; Wild Wadi, you can stay at Jumeirah Beach Hotel (or any of the Jumeirah group hotels). For Legoland Dubai Waterpark or any of the Dubai Parks & Resorts Theme Parks, you can stay at Lapita Resort .

Travelling to Dubai with children?

The cut-off age where you must pay for a child’s ticket at different attractions varies from roughly 3 to 6 years.

In our experience, age restrictions are not strictly enforced – i.e. no forced providing photo ID! But what is strictly enforced is height restrictions.  Some theme parks and water parks base their payment system on height rather than age!

At most attractions and restaurants, those 12 years and over are considered to be adults; this can certainly dent your budget if you’re travelling with teens .

Find our complete guide to the best Dubai activities for kids here .

Once in a lifetime Dubai experiences

There are a few experiences in Dubai that can break the bank, but sensible budgeting can give you an experience you won’t forget.  As an idea, you can expect to pay the following for these exclusive Dubai experiences:

  • Afternoon tea at Burj al Arab : From 500 AED per person
  • Skydive over the Dubai Palm: From 1699 AED per person
  • Helicopter tour of the city: From 649 AED per person
  • Hot air balloon experience : From 1378 AED per person

We will leave you with one tip, research in advance, especially if you are visiting at a busy time of year . Booking in advance or finding discount offers can save you greatly in the long run, and make an otherwise expensive city quite affordable.

can you use travel money card in dubai

You will no doubt want to take back some memorabilia and souvenirs for family and friends from your trip to Dubai. We recommend you check out not just the big shopping malls but the souks too.

Souk Madinat Jumeirah is a great modern shopping spot for tourists (although on the pricey side), same with Souk Al Bahar opposite Dubai Mall . You can also try the shops along Al Seef on Dubai Creek, as well as the traditional souks in Deira.

Dates and camel milk chocolates can make wonderful inexpensive gifts, or save up your spending money if you want to pick up something special at the gold market.

You can find all our suggested locations for picking up souvenirs in Dubai here .

As you can see, it’s hugely variable depending on what budget you have set for yourself.

The important thing is DO SET A BUDGET. It’s an easy city to get carried away and spend far more than you planned.

If you can, travel outside peak times to reduce your flight and hotel costs and pre-book your paid attractions. Study a map to see what attractions you can fit together to save on transportation costs and mix in some of Dubai’s great free activities with special paid experiences.

One of the significant attributes of the Niyo Global account is that while you are taking in the sights and enjoying your vacation, your account continues to be at work. Your savings account balance earns up to 5% interest* p.a. with a monthly payout, which you don’t get with travel credit cards . Therefore, irrespective of the amount you load into the card, you do not need to agonize over it being stuck there.

3. Load in INR and spend in 100+ currencies across 150+ countries.

When travelling to Dubai , there are various travel requirements one must follow. For travelling to Dubai from India , you need to convert your Indian Rupees(INR) to United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED), which can incur different charges. With the Niyo travel card , you don’t have to think about loading it in different currencies . You just need to load your account in INR (Indian Rupees), and the card takes care of the rest . Every time you use your cards in Dubai to make a payment, it automatically converts the amount required from INR to your country’s local currency. And the remaining money continues to earn interest.

So, in case you consider hopping from UAE to some other neighbouring nation(s), the Niyo Global card will make your life easier. And no matter what country you visit, you may use your card as it works at all VISA-accepting merchants. Considering the worldwide VISA network, the Niyo Global card has the best acceptance rate in 100+ currencies across 150+ countries.

4. Real-time transaction tracking

Keeping abreast of all the financial transactions carried out is a sign of a cautious and wise traveller. And when you are travelling in a foreign land, your sense of vigilance will automatically turn up by a few notches. This is where the Niyo travel card will come in to play a consequential role. It will send you alerts and notifications so that even a smidgen of discrepancy does not go unnoticed. To help you keep track of your funds, all your transactions are always listed in the local currency and updated in the app each time you spend somewhere. This is what makes Niyo one of the best foreign travel cards in the market.

5. No hidden charges

You probably know that credit and debit cards levy additional charges every time they are swiped at a point-of-sale counter. Though there are various benefits of forex cards , they still charge you various fees. That is why Niyo is a better solution to tackle that . If you carry out your transaction using a Niyo Global card, you can rest assured that there are no hidden charges.

6. Nearby ATM Locator

Today, carrying cash along on a trip is a matter of concern. The possibilities of money loss are manifold, hence the increasing inclination towards the usage of plastic money like credit and debit cards. Thankfully some travel guidelines to Dubai can help you. You may think that a traveller’s cheque can be a good alternative to cash. But the inevitable problem with a traveller’s cheque is that you need to factor in an excessive amount of time waiting at the counter of a business establishment or bank in order to accept the cheque so that you may encash your money for use. The matter may worsen if you discover that there are no banks close by, smacking further waste of your valuable vacation time. Moreover, travellers’ cheques have become redundant in recent times.

You surely have a lot of benefits of forex cards , but they still lack behind in many areas. On the other hand, the Niyo Global card will simply let you load money so that you can swipe it at any ATM and withdraw local currency at any time. That way, you don’t risk breaking any travel guidelines to Dubai and perform your transactions without worry.

To make it easy for Indian passport holders travelling overseas, Niyo Global brings you a bundle of cost-efficient and smart features that’ll help make handling payments during your trip smooth and easy.

We hope these points are self-explanatory enough to aid you in making informed decisions about the financial aspect of your future trips. In fact, not just in the case of your upcoming trip to Dubai but also in the case of other international trips, as well as multi-country trips, you may be able to limit your overall expenditure to an acceptable figure with the information. In fact, with the money saved through the Niyo Global card, you may do a little more harmless shopping! That is why despite all the benefits of forex card , credit card or traveller’s cheque, Niyo Global is undoubtedly more beneficial.

can you use travel money card in dubai

Revolut card is quite popular thanks to their various benefits. From speed to ease of use, customers have many reasons to use it.

It explains why millions of people use its services. They also want to enjoy its pocket-friendliness.

Its support for major currencies is also a plus. However, some things about it remain a mystery.

For example, can you use Revolut Card in Dubai? Let’s find out and learn more about it.

Table of Contents

Which Countries Can One Use a Revolut Card In?

There are a few countries where Revolut serves its residents. They include the following;

  • European Economic Area (EEA)
  • Switzerland
  • The United Kingdom (UK)
  • The United States (US)

Can You Use Revolut Internationally?

If the list of countries is that short, does it mean that you can’t use it internationally? That’s far from the truth despite that.

The service of sending money to one’s bank account using Revolut’s interbank exchange rate is available in more than 150 countries. Equally important, the transfers won’t cost you a dime.

This service allows you to transact in 30 currencies which is quite impressive. You can also send money to friends, banks and companies depending on your current needs.

Can I Use Revolut Card in Dubai?

The card is usable internationally and United Arab Emirates (UAE) including Dubai is no exception. Follow these steps to get this card;

  • Open the Revolut app
  • Navigate to the Cards -> Add new card by swiping right
  • Choose a real or virtual card
  • Select your card’s features
  • Create a 4-digit pin and confirm it
  • Finally, tap Continue

The card will arrive in Dubai within 10 working days. Upon receiving your card, enter its information to get going.

The set up of a virtual card takes a few seconds. It is also free and doesn’t have a pin or any security feature.

For that reason, one can’t use the virtual card to withdraw money from an ATM. Equally important, not all payment terminals will accept it.

Despite lack of these security features, its characteristics are enough to handle fraud squarely. After all, it is disposable hence easy to change or remove one after several months.

Besides, the card number changes as soon as you transact. That’s why it is ideal for preventing fraud.

As for these virtual cards, follow these steps

Go to Cards

Choose “Virtual” on its top right side

Tap “Get Virtual” to apply for the card

How Can You Transfer Money from Dubai to Revolut

It is the same for any other part of UAE. Ensure that you have the username or the phone number of that particular recipient.

You also need other details including the cardholder’s full name and the card number. If the bank transfer is international, you will also need an IBAN and a SWIFT/BIC code.

Bank transfers and card transfers are available. However, card transactions only apply to a few.

Sending AED is possible to both UAE and non-UAE recipients. However, you incur high costs when sending to the latter.

Card transfer take around 30 minutes and AED transactions can take between 3 and 5 business days to complete.

Revolut Send Limits

Transfer limits don’t apply for most currencies. However, it is normal for payment partners to place them although not for all currencies for compliance.

If you are transferring to a Visa card, you won’t exceed $2500 for a single transaction. On the other hand, the limit for a Mastercard card is $5000.

Which Currencies Can You Use when Transferring Money Using Revolut?

How will revolut tell the ideal currency.

The payment currency of a particular transaction determines the currency that your Revolut card will use. Therefore, if you are in the United States and have a USD transaction, the card will deduct money from the corresponding wallet.

If your USD balance is inadequate to facilitate the payment, the card shifts to the next active currency with sufficient balance. When it comes to currency conversions, the USD base currency depends on your location.

The bottom line is that you don’t need to purchase other currencies let’s say even when travelling enough. As long as the balance is sufficient, the transaction will succeed regardless of the currency.

Nevertheless, an issue may arise if you have several currency balances but none of it have enough money for the transaction. It is in no position to add the various balances in different wallets to facilitate the payment.
