Dragon Isles Pathfinder

Dragon Isles Pathfinder Icon

The vast majority of Pathfinder requirements can be completed right now and only a small portion requires the launch of Patch 10.2.

How to Unlock Regular Flying in Dragonflight?

The requirements mix zone campaigns and exploration. In the subsequent sections of the guide, we will be delving into more details for each.

Zone Campaign Achievements

The first requirement is to complete storylines in the five Dragonflight zones, including Zaralek Cavern . If you are having trouble completing the campaigns in the zones, do not forget to check out your Quest Log and hover with your mouse over the Campaign tab. Sometimes, you abandon a quest accidentally, but you should easily track it down by searching for an exclamation point icon with a shield background on the zone map.

Exploration Achievements

You need to fully explore all six Dragonflight zones by revealing the covered areas of the world map. The achievements can be easily completed on your Dragonriding mount.

Are you wondering how you can fly in World of Warcraft? Flying is a faster means of transportation, but there are a few things you need to do before you can fly. This wikiHow article teaches you not only how to acquire and use a flying mount, but also how to fly as a druid.

Meeting the Requirements

Step 1 Reach level 30.

  • If you reach Exalted reputation with your faction, then you can purchase the skill for 200 gold. [3] X Research source

Step 4 Purchase a flying mount.

  • To fly in Zereth Mortis, you need to complete the achievement "Unlocking the Secrets", which is a meta-achievement containing 6 other achievements. [6] X Research source
  • To fly in Battle for Azeroth zones, you need the Pathfinder, Part 2 achievement. [7] X Research source

Flying on Your Mount and Upgrading It

Step 1 Use the flying skill.

  • Press W to move forward.
  • Press S to move back.
  • Press A to turn left, and D to turn right.
  • Press Q to strafe left, and E to strafe right.
  • Press the space bar to tilt up.
  • Press X to tilt down.

Step 4 Reach level 45 to unlock Master Riding.

  • Oribos, the Maw, and Korthia (Shadowlands)
  • Argus (Legion)
  • Tanaan Jungle (intro to Warlords of Draenor)
  • Isle of Thunder and Timeless Isle (Pandaria)
  • The Molten Front (near Firelands)
  • Tol Barad (PvP area introduced in Cataclysm)
  • The Darkmoon Faire and Darkmoon Island
  • Exodar, Azuremist Isle, and Bloodmyst Isle
  • Silvermoon, Eversong Woods, and Ghostlands
  • Most instanced content (like scenarios, dungeons, raids, battlegrounds, and arenas). [9] X Research source

Flying as a Druid

Step 1 Purchase the Expert Riding skill.

  • If you reach Exalted reputation with your faction, then you can purchase the skill for 200 gold. [10] X Research source

Step 2 Know the limitations of your flying travel form.

  • You cannot use it while fighting.
  • You cannot use it indoors.
  • You cannot use it while already in another form.
  • It will not benefit from Mount Equipment or Guild Perks (which make your riding faster).

Step 3 Open your Spellbook and use Travel Form.

  • Increase your flying speed by buying Master Riding at level 45.

Flying in Shadowlands

Step 1 Complete your Covenant storyline.

  • You'll then be able to fly in Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, and Revendreth. You cannot, however, fly from one zone to another since flying is not permitted in the In-Between.

  • Note that if you dismount in midair you will not be able to remount whilst falling - druids however can still use flying form whilst falling. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

Unlocking Flying in Battle for Azeroth: Part 1

If you’ve got your eye on the skies where Pterrodax rule, you’ll need to complete five achievements as a part of earning Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part One. On completion, you will earn this achievement account-wide.

Where to Start

I’m not 120 yet.

Don’t worry – if you haven’t reached maximum level yet, you have time. Go questing, run dungeons, level up your professions. In the end, you will hit that magic number. You can always take a look at one of the many leveling guides available on various fansites, like this one .

I’m 120 but Haven’t Started the War Campaign

If you’re still working your way through the Horde and Alliance War Campaigns, don’t worry. We’ve put together a brief walkthrough below of what you need to do to complete it.

Achievements

Exploration.

Battle for Azeroth Explorer:  Explore the regions of Kul Tiras and Zandalar.

You’ll need to complete the Battle for Azeroth Explorer achievement by visiting locations in Kul Tiras and Zandalar.

Tip: If you have War Mode on, you’ll want to exercise an abundance of caution as you travel into enemy territory.  Having outposts unlocked and available within those zones will help you get around a little easier. And of course, you can always grab a friend or two to go with you and get in a little PvP while you’re at it.

Explore Tiragarde Sound

Stormsong valley, reputations.

Azerothian Diplomat:  Reach Revered with all the reputations listed.

Whether you’re Horde or Alliance, you’ll want to reach Revered with specific factions to earn this achievement.

  • Horde: Zandalari Empire, Talanji’s Expedition, Voldunai, The Honorbound, Champions of Azeroth, Tortollan Seekers
  • Alliance: Proudmoore Admiralty, Order of Embers, Storm’s Wake, 7 th Legion, Champions of Azeroth, Tortollan Seekers

Tip: There are a lot of ways to maximize your Reputation gains. Make sure you’re keeping on top World Quests and completing Emissaries. (You can check which ones are active with the WoW Companion App .) You’ll also want to make your way to the Darkmoon Faire when it’s around to purchase a Darkmoon Hat (or two) or go for a ride on the Darkmoon carousel or the new Darkmoon roller coaster to get a buff to your reputation gains. Check out Wowhead’s guide to learn more.

World Quests

Wide World of Quests:  Complete 100 different World Quests in Kul Tiras and Zandalar.

From slaying bosses to taking part in profession quests, there are a variety of activities in Kul Tiras and Zandalar to participate in. World Quests become available at level 120 and can be rewarding if you’re looking for some new gear, a little extra gold in your pocket, War Resources, or some Azerite to boost up your Heart of Azeroth.

Left-clicking on Emissaries on the Map (Hotkey- M) will cycle through the zones that have quests available for that specific Emissary. You can also mouse-over the quests in the map to see which Faction it corresponds to, the task they're asking of you, and the rewards you’ll earn by completing them.

Keep an eye out here for more information on Pathfinder Part 2 in the Rise of Azshara content update, when you’ll be able to earn your wings and fly high above the shimmering seas and rugged valleys of Kul Tiras and Zandalar.

How to unlock flying in World of Warcraft's 8.2 update, Rise of Azshara

You can finally take to the skies in WoW's latest update but you'll have to do a bit of grinding first.

World of Warcraft's latest update, Patch 8.2: Rise of Azshara, is out today and with it comes the ability to use flying mounts in Kul Tiras, Zandalar, and the two new zones of Nazjatar and Mechagon. The only roadblock between you and your pilot's license, however, is two in-game achievements: "Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part One" and "Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part Two."

If you're an active player, you should already have Battle for Azeroth Part One completed. Part Two is available once 8.2 is live and it'll take a week or two to wrap it up (if you're a more casual player). So don't expect to take flight straight away.

If you're a newer player, though, expect flying to take a few weeks of grinding. The good news is that these achievements are account-wide, though, so all of your characters will be able to fly once you complete both Part One and Part Two.

If you're confused about what steps you have left in these achievements, Wowhead has a great tool that shows you exactly what you have to do.

Here's what you'll need to do to complete both achievements and unlock flying.

Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part One

This will be the most time-intensive part of unlocking flying because players are expected to have been chipping away at Part One since Battle for Azeroth first launched. The biggest grind will undoubtedly be Azerothian Diplomat, which required 'revered' reputation with the six main factions in Battle for Azeroth. That alone could take a more casual player months to complete.

It's a little confusing, but Part One is actually a series of individual achievements (which are often themselves a series of different achievements) you have to first complete in order to earn the Part One achievement itself. Here's a breakdown of what achievements you'll need and what they require:

  • Battle for Azeroth Explorer: Explore all of Kul Tiras and Zandalar (each continent has three zones, each with their own achievement that lists the individual areas you have to discover.
  • Azerothian Diplomat: Earn revered reputation with the six main factions in Battle for Azeroth.
  • Wide World of Quests: Complete 100 World Quests in Kul Tiras or Zandalar.
  • Loremaster of Kul Tiras (Alliance) / Zandalar Forever! (Horde): Complete each of the zone-specific story quests for your faction's starting zone.
  • Ready for War: Complete the War Campaign for your respective faction.

Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part Two

This achievement is, thankfully, much easier to earn. In addition to needing to complete Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part One to unlock this achievement, the rest of its requirements can be met in a week or so of heavy grinding.

  • Explore Nazjatar: Simply visit each of the locations in this list to fully explore all of Nazjatar.
  • Explore Mechagon: Same idea, here's the list of each location you need.
  • Reach revered with two factions: If you're Horde, you'll need to reach revered with The Unshackled, while Alliance players have to get revered with the Waveblade Ankoan. You'll also need to be revered with the Rustbold Resistance, which is a neutral faction available to both Horde and Alliance players.

And that's it! Hopefully you've been chipping away at Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part One for months now and already have it completed, otherwise this will be a long and arduous grind. Wowhead has a great guide that further breaks down the requirements for each achievement and even lists the exact coordinates of areas you need to discover, so you don't waste time running all over the map.

All Druid forms in WoW Dragonflight Patch 10.2

Image of Izabela Tomakic

World of Warcraft Dragonflight Patch 10.2 is finally taking players to one of the most anticipated and teased zones in the history of the game—the Emerald Dream. Known as the land of dreams and Ysera’s realm, the Emerald Dream is closely tied to Druids, and that’s why they are getting special treatment with a ton of new form customizations .

Druids are, by definition, Jack of all trades, and they can assume four different forms—bear, cat, moonkin, and travel form which will vary depending if you’re traveling in water, by foot, or you’re flying. In Legion , Druids got a ton of new customizations via Artifact Weapons, but ever since then, you had to work with what you got to create your ideal version of this class, at least visually.

So, here are all currently known Druid forms coming in Dragonflight Patch 10.2.

All Druid forms you can get in WoW Dragonflight Patch 10.2

In Dragonflight Patch 10.2, all Druid enjoyers can expect to have more new toys or customizations to play around with. Blizzard Entertainment isn’t playing favorites, and no matter if you’re a cat or a bear lover, you’ll have plenty of customization options to choose from. It’s still unclear how you’ll unlock most of these customizations, but it will most likely revolve around completing content in the Emerald Dream .

To travel fast in World of Warcraft you will either need to play a class which has access to class specific teleports abilities or you will need to learn the engineering profession.

World of Warcraft is such a huge game that covers a mind boggling amount of zones to explore. There are multiple Planets, Continents, and Zones and Dungeons/Raids to explore. But how do we, as players, manage to navigate this massive world?

Traditionally large games in the MMO niche have Fast Travel systems, and World of Warcraft is no exception! The Fast Travel Systems in World of Warcraft are Immersive and match the Player Fantasy in amazing ways!

WoW How to get a Mount (Solved)

In World of Warcraft, there are collectible Mounts. Epic animals or machines that the players can travel on to increase your speed. Some are Ground Based and increase your run speed. Some Mounts Fly, allowing you to take to the skies and view the world below you! There are even aquatic mounts that will carry you through the tides and down to the sea floor with great speed!

To learn mount riding in World of Warcraft you must be level 10. You will need to go to the mount trainer in your major city. They will teach you 60% mount speed.

To learn 100% mount speed you will need to raise your character level to 20. Upon reaching level 20 you will need to return to a major city to learn the next level of mount training (100% mount speed).

WoW How to Fly (Explained)

Level your character to level 30 and then travel to your major faction city. Go to your flight master (Stormwind for Alliance) & (Ogrimmar for Horde) to learn flying. Purchase your flying training (280% speed flying).

Note that when your character reaches level 40 you will be able to learn from the same flight master trainer, the last tier of flying in World of Warcraft (320% speed flying).

WoW Flight Points Fast Travel

For Players that want a more Automated mode of Fast Travel, one of the first systems players will be introduced to are Flight Paths. Flight Paths are managed by NPC’s and connect you to locations that you have discovered previously.

This lets you get back to your Major Cities or to your Questing Hubs without having to walk yourself.

Using flight paths saves time and allowing you a well deserved break to stretch your legs, make a coffee or even get a snack!

WoW Teleports (Explained)

Teleportation in WoW is a very fast and interesting mode of travel. Being able to teleport from one location to another instantly can be achieved in many different ways! From Toys, to player spells, Teleportation is the FASTEST and most sought after mode of transportation in World of Warcraft.

  • Special note: Druids, Death Knights, and Monks can use their TP’s twice in a row to exit long dungeons quickly instead of walking back out!

Mage: Mages have SO many teleportation options, for themselves and for their party/raid! Mages can either cast Teleport abilities, or open Portals that anyone in their Party/Raid can use!

List of Mage Teleport locations!

  • ALL Factions major cities
  • Dalaran- Legion
  • Dalaran- Wrath of the Lich King
  • Dalaran- Crater (Be prepared for a long fall if you take this portal!)
  • Stonard (Horde only, located in Swamp of Sorrows.)
  • Theramore (Alliance only. Located in Dustwallow Marsh.)
  • Vale of Eternal Blossoms
  • Stormshield (Alliance only. Located in Draenor.)
  • Warspear (Horde only. Located in Draenor.)
  • Hall of the Guardian (Mage Class Order Hall.)

WoW Portal Rooms (Explained)

If you are a member of the Noble Alliance, you can find a Portal Room in the Mage District of Stormwind, allowing you to teleport to many Points of Interest from every expansion.

If you are a member of the Mighty Horde, then there is a Portal Room located beneath the Gates of Orgrimmar, slightly hidden and easily defended from attacks!

WoW Engineering Teleport Devices

If you are one of the Industrious Engineers, one of the items you can craft is a Wormhole Generator! This toy exists for every expansion.

List of WoW Engineering Teleport locations!

  • Ultrasafe Transporter-Gagetzan (Requires Gnomish Engineering)
  • Ultrasafe Transporter- Toshley’s Station (Outland)(Requires Gnomish Engineering)
  • Dimensional Ripper – Everlook (Requires Goblin Engineering)
  • Dimensional Ripper – Area 52 (Outland)(Requires Goblin Engineering)
  • Wormhole Generator-Northrend (you get to choose the zone from a list)
  • Wormhole Generator-Pandaria (Teleports you to a “mostly” random location on Pandaria)
  • Wormhole Centrifuge (WoD)-(Choose a zone from the list, but the descriptions are more vague)
  • Reaves Module: Wormhole Generator Mode (Legion) -(Allows you to choose the Wormhole Module for the Legion Reeves bot, teleporting you to a random location in a zone of your choice.)
  • Wormhole Generator- Argus
  • Wormhole Generator – Kul Tiras
  • Wormhole Generator – Zandalar
  • Wormhole Generator – Shadowlands

WOW how do Hearthstones work? (Explained)

Hearthstones can be provided to players by Innkeepers, and a select few special NPC’s. These Hearthstones let you travel back to your “Home” (Where the stone is bound to) which tends to be the Inn you received the stone.

  • Hearthstone: Traditional Hearthstone received from Innkeepers
  • Toy Hearthstones: Gathered from many different World Events.
  • Garrison Hearthstone: Teleports you to your Warlords of Draenor Garrison
  • Dalaran Hearthstone: Teleports you to the Legion version of Dalaran (Broken Isles.)

WoW Racial Fast Travel

  • Vulpera: Can set a campsite that allows them to teleport back to ANY outside location in the world! This is NOT on the same cooldown as your Hearthstone and can be great for traveling the world quickly!
  • Dark Iron Dwarf: Dark Iron Dwarves can spawn a Mole Machine allowing them to teleport to locations all over the world! These locations must be found first to “memorize” the location, and can then be traveled to in the future. See the list below for all Mole Machine locations!

Druid Ground travel Form - forced flight form in flying areas

Can we please, please, PLEASE split the flight and ground travel forms like it was before… Please…

Sometimes I don’t want to fly and would prefer to stay on the ground. Why was this choice ever taken away from us?

There is a way to do this, though. Go to Moonglade and in the inn is a merchant who sells a glyph that allows you to learn just stag form.

Because of the ability pruning, and the dumbing down of the game. Blizzard heard some casual players complain that there were too many buttons, and now they’re “fixing” it hard.

:deer:

Tome of the Wilds: Stag Form is what you’re looking for, sold by Lorelae Wintersong in Moonglade and Amurra Thistledew in the Dreamgrove

While we’re at it, can we please just transmog legendary weapons already?

Also may I ask why you didn’t check to see if it existed before whining?

What are you referring to? If you mean the artefact weapons from legion then come 9.0, they can be mogged separate from the forms. If you mean changing other weapons to legendries then that is already possible.

I know, I’m taking the mick. <3

Fair play if that’s your prerogative but nicer to be helpful isn’t it? Little things to improve what is quite a toxic community at the minute.

While that’s true, the forums has desensitised me to all that and like less than half of my posts are serious because I can’t take a lot of people here seriously. Not referring to you or OP btw.

It’s a sad state of affairs really but don’t drag yourself down with the rest. Be the difference.

Awesome, I didn’t know that existed. Thanks… But, I prefer the cheetah, is there one for that too?

Yes, you can buy the glyph from AH I believe to change your stag into a cheatah, also one to turn into a doe.

I’ve been a Druid main for around 10 years, how has this got past me unnoticed?

Druids and their 1st world problems…

All of the druid’s forms both old ones and new ones can be acquired through Glyph’s made by Inscription I suggest you buy and hold on to them though and use them after the patch coming “soon” as then it becomes permanently learned appearance in the barber shop rather than a spell amendment.

You are whining as always, you didn’t give advice to buy Glyph of Stag, you started whining, man, you won’t be taken seriously, never.

:joy_cat:

As facetious as it often sounds, suggesting people reroll when they complain about class complexity (not performance, survivability, etc), is not a bad thing. I like that some classes have more things to press than others. It’s nice having a hunter alt that I can not play for 6 weeks and still pick up and use because it only has 4 buttons anyway.

  • This form can only be used outdoors .
  • This form changes the druid into a stag if in land-restricted areas, a very fast bird in flying-enabled areas, and a seal in the water (which is immensely useful in Vashj'ir ).

Spell nature sleep

  • Your caster form will start regaining mana 5 seconds after you change to Travel Form.
  • Unlike a mount , which players cannot use while in combat, a druid is able to shift into travel form while fighting either a mob or another player if they choose to.
  • Travel Form is instantly cast, making it even better for those sticky situations. With Travel Form, druids are able to escape from nearly any fight or simply put distance between themselves and their attackers practically whenever they wish.
  • As with any form, you may harvest herbs through herbalism , and skin dead beasts through skinning . This makes it an excellent way to achieve the fastest results with a gathering profession.
  • The ground based travel form increases your speed by 100% when activated out of combat, and 40% when in combat or when in an arena or battleground. Previously it always increased speed by just 40%. Which speed you get depends on your combat status when you shapeshift.

Tips and tactics [ ]

  • This form is instant cast, so it can be used to beat a strategic retreat if a fight is going badly. However when used in combat you'll be considered land-restricted, even in flying-enabled zones, and so must wait until you're out of combat to use the flying form.
  • The travel form does not stack with speed enchants or speed gems, with the exception of the level 60 and 70 Feral PvP 4 piece set bonus.

Speculation [ ]

It was widely speculated that a stag model was intended to be implemented from day one but changed before release, explaining the odd hoof-shaped icon, and the fact that while the other forms had unique skins, this form looked identical to cheetahs in the game.

Powerful rewards await in Season 4 to deliver the best of what the Dragonflight expansion offers. Jump into the new Mythic+ dungeon rotation, rally your forces for new challenges in raids, prepare for the new PvP season, and ready yourselves for The War Within .

fly travel in wow

Return to all eight Dragonflight dungeons for a refined and rewarding progression curve for Heroic, Mythic, and Mythic+ with better pacing and meaningful rewards.

  • Algeth’ar Academy
  • Brackenhide Hollow
  • Halls of Infusion
  • Ruby Life Pools
  • The Azure Vault
  • The Nokhud Offensive
  • Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr

The baseline Dawn of the Infinite will be more challenging and rewarding; however, it will not be included in the bi-weekly rotation. Additional details on the variety of adjustments to dungeons and their progression can be found in our previously published article .

Awakened Raids

Every week during Dragonflight Season 4, one of the three Dragonflight raids will become Awakened—Vault of the Incarnates; Aberrus, the Shadowed Crucible; or Amirdrassil, the Dream's Hope. Enemies within Awakened raids are stronger and drop upgraded loot with a higher item level. Also, a buff that increases reputation gain with Dragonflight reputations will be enabled whenever a specific raid is Awakened. Schedule:

  • Vault of the Incarnates: Sign of Awakened Storms – Dragonscale Expedition, Maruuk Centaur, and Iskaara Tuskaar
  • Aberrus, the Shadowed Crucible: Sign of Awakened Embers – Loamm Niffen, Soridormi, and Sabellian/Wrathion
  • Amirdrassil, the Dream's Hope: Sign of Awakened Dreams – Dream Wardens and Valdrakken Accord

Powerful New Rewards

Earn fresh rewards through PvE and PvP content, purchase them with a new currency— Antique Bronze Bullion —or through the new gear upgrade track—Awakened. By defeating Awakened bosses, earn one Antique Bronze Bullion a week per character, with the cap rising by one each week. If you miss a week, you can catch up to the current weekly max.

Exchange two Bullion for weapons and powerful items from the Dragonflight raids from the vendors in the Parting Glass in Valdrakken. An additional vendor nearby sells Jigglesworth Sr mount for three Bullion and cosmetics that grant you the choice of any raid weapon appearance at any difficulty color for one Bullion each.

Complete all three Awakened Dragonflight raids on Heroic difficulty to receive the Voyaging Wildering dynamic flying mount. Earn the new achievement title, The Awakened Hero, for completing the Dragonriding Awakened raids on Heroic difficulty. Dedicated defenders can obtain the new Keystone Master mount, Infinite Armoredon , once the Dragonflight Keystone Master: Season 4 achievement is attained.

Also, those who complete the Dragonflight Awakened raids on Mythic difficulty are rewarded with Path Portals to the three raids:

  • Path of the Primal Prison : Teleport to the Vault of the Incarnates entrance.
  • Path of the Bitter Legacy : Teleport to the Aberrus, the Shadowed Crucible entrance.
  • Path of the Scorching Dream : Teleport to the Amirdrassil, the Dream’s Hope entrance.

All three raids will also drop a new tier token to exchange for new tier pieces with the appearance and bonus combination that players voted for .

Legendary items will drop as usual from raids, but players who have previously obtained them can purchase a Scale of Awakening to upgrade their items to the Season 4 ilvls (base is 502 and can be upgraded further through Crests and Flightstones).

A New PvP Season

Season 4 arrives with PvP rankings reset, new gear sets, mounts, titles, and more! Earn the Vicious Dreamtalon (Horde or Alliance version) for Rated Arena and Rated Battleground, and the Draconic Gladiator’s Drake for earning the Gladiator: Dragonflight Season 4 achievement.

Another Boeing plane issue? Don't fall for the headlines. | Cruising Altitude

fly travel in wow

Not all issues involving Boeings are created equal.

Boeing has been in the news a lot lately, and that’s partly because of me. As an aviation reporter, it’s my job to follow what’s going on at the company and update the public about any important developments. Where it gets a little muddier, though, is when some incident involves a Boeing airplane that is not specifically a Boeing Issue (caps intentional).

As a result of some very high-profile and serious safety incidents, Boeing is rightfully under a microscope now. But just because there’s a news appetite for it doesn’t mean that Boeing is responsible for everything that goes on with its aircraft once they leave the factory floor.

At a time when people are thinking about the planes they fly on more than usual, it can be hard to highlight relevant information without misleading readers into thinking there’s more malfeasance than there actually is.

It’s a newsroom conversation every time we see Boeing bubbling in news trends. My job is to hold Boeing accountable without fearmongering.

Aviation professionals agree that while Boeing and its practices deserve scrutiny, you should still feel alright flying on their planes.

So, let’s try to cut through the noise.

What’s wrong with Boeing?

“There are genuine worries about Boeing in terms of its performance as a company, its safety culture, its manufacturing culture,” Jon Ostrower, editor-in-chief of The Air Current , told me.

It’s hard to boil down the issues at Boeing because they didn’t happen overnight. They’re systemic and the result of a series of small changes and corporate decisions over decades that de-emphasized engineering excellence and safety and put extra importance on shareholder returns. But that’s not the only thing.

“During COVID we had a lot of retirements that happened both on the pilot front and the mechanic front, and there was a lot of senior expertise that left,” Laurie Garrow, a civil engineering professor specializing in aviation at Georgia Tech, told me. “The senior expertise probably provided a series of checks and balances that are being relearned and reinstitutionalized in some companies.”

Garrow is currently on a consulting contract with Boeing on unrelated issues. She said her perspective applies to not just Boeing but the aviation industry as a whole.

According to Ostrower, Boeing needs to change its corporate culture to emerge from the current shadow.

“Boeing’s behavior in terms of the design of the 737 Max is an aberration in an otherwise phenomenally safe system,” he said. “They need to put themselves back together, and I mean that quite literally. There has been an internal breakup of the company over decades that has fractured their workforce, both the engineers and the machinists, spiritually and geographically.”

Boeing is, of course, under investigation by federal regulators as a result of these issues. It’s unclear what the outcome of those investigations will be, but it seems likely that some internal company changes will be required.

What airplane issues is Boeing responsible for?

“What’s going on at Boeing is distinctly separate from the types of issues that happen in service, that by the way, would largely go unnoticed or unreported on if it wasn’t what happened on Alaska 1282,” Ostrower said.

Said another way: A Boeing plane can be involved in an incident that has nothing to do with Boeing itself.

“There is a pile-on fixation that happens in the broader media landscape,” Ostrower said. “That is a function of how people are feeling about their confidence in Boeing, but it fundamentally is not related to anything that’s been going on at Boeing.”

Garrow pointed out that aviation is extremely safe overall and has only gotten safer over time.

“A lot of the safety features have redundancy. A lot of the kinks have been worked out,” she said. “Not every aircraft flies perfectly, there are maintenance issues that happen, but they are getting increased scrutiny right now.”

Of course, Boeing is responsible for manufacturing defects like the missing bolts that led to the Alaska Airlines explosive decompression earlier this year. But as an airframer, Boeing doesn’t manufacture things like engines – those are supplied by other companies – or place the tires on planes that have been in service for many years. Once an aircraft is away from the factory, airlines largely take over its maintenance.

“If a flight is delayed because of a problem, it’s because someone has noticed it and it’s being addressed,” Ostrower said.

That’s the system working.

“These are incredibly complex machines, and they run at a reliability level that is truly extraordinary,” Ostrower added. “There are levels of redundancy. You can defer maintenance items in a safe and well-understood way … This component wasn’t active on my airplane, and that’s fine, you can operate safely with that, it’s approved to do that.”

What is an emergency landing?

Another gray area when it comes to the news is emergency landings. A casual traveler understandably hears the word “emergency” and thinks of the absolute worst case. Still, the Federal Aviation Administration allows, and in fact encourages, pilots to declare an emergency in any “ distress or urgency condition .”

According to the pilot/controller glossary , that can include “a condition of being concerned about safety and of requiring timely but not immediate assistance.”

Aviation safety is built on redundancy and overcaution, so a pilot declaring an emergency is usually another sign that the system is working as designed. It doesn’t always bear being reported on.

Are Boeing airplanes safe?

The short answer is yes.

“Trust has been broken at Boeing and the airlines are paying for that,” Ostrower said. “It makes it really hard for us to say ‘trust the airlines and their processes,’ but you have to because there’s ample evidence and ample history and safety culture to back that up.”

Thousands of Boeing aircraft fly without incident every day. Eventually, the company’s place at the top of the news cycle will fade, though the focus on safety throughout aviation will remain as it always has.

“People shouldn’t have to think about what kind of airplane they’re getting on, and we need to get back to that,” Ostrower said. “The way we’re going to get back to that is through getting not just Boeing but the airlines on a reliable footing.”

In the meantime, Garrow said, travelers should consider the bigger picture.

“The few times an aircraft has gone down or there has been a major accident. I personally have found it very difficult the next day to get on a flight if I’m traveling. Aviation has one of the best safety records of all of the modes and I personally don’t want to change my life – not go on my dream vacation to Europe or not go on my professional trip that I literally could not drive to – because of a fear of flying,” she said. “I just always remind myself that aviation has had one of the best safety records, and I’m comforted by the fact that I’m not driving the plane, that I have two experienced pilots that have been trained for multiple safety scenarios, and I’m in good hands when I travel.”

Where to fly on a budget this summer

Airfare experts share their forecasts for summer vacation destinations that won’t break your budget.

fly travel in wow

This summer is shaping up to be another scorcher , and the demand for summer travel is piping hot, too. If early 2024 trends are any indication of what’s to come, “it’s looking to be busier than 2023,” said Katy Nastro, spokesperson for the flight booking site Going . Recent airport passenger volume numbers have regularly exceeded last year and pre-pandemic levels.

Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir.com , says airline capacity has rebounded from pandemic complications, but strong travel demand means summer flight prices can be high, depending on when you’re hoping to go. Flying in June, July or early August will be more expensive than later in the season, according to the company’s summer forecast .

“And it’s not just the airfare,” Klee said in an email. “Expensive hotel rates and crowds everywhere make Western Europe tricky for the summer.”

Despite the price tag, “people are going to go,” said Melanie Fish, the head of global public relations for all Expedia Brands, including Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com . “When we look at searches for destinations, they are definitely up year over year.”

For popular destinations like Europe , Klee and Fish say to push trips later into August, September or even October. Not only will prices soften, but you’ll alleviate some of the strain of overtourism .

“My number one tip is go ahead and take that summer vacation, but maybe hold on to take that big, big trip in September,” Fish said.

According to Expedia’s summer 2024 travel outlook , we’re currently in the sweet spot for shopping for early summer flights at the best rates, as Fish says lower fares tend to pop up 21 to 60 days out. It doesn’t hurt to start your search even earlier, setting up price alerts to flag when airfare drops. If you can swing it, look to fly on a Monday for international trips or a Tuesday for domestic trips to save up to 15 percent on fares, Fish added.

It’s not impossible to find good deals on airfare, whether you’re looking for a tropical beach trip , a mountain adventure or a vibrant city. Here are places that are trending cheaper — and the destinations you’ll want to avoid.

Go to Mexico

Sun, surf, culture, chilaquiles — Mexico is always a good idea , but particularly so this summer. With the opening of the new airport in Tulum , U.S. airlines have been adding gobs of new flights to Mexico, particularly to beach regions. “We’ve seen a healthy amount of deals down to Mexico resort areas like Cancún,” Nastro said.

Laura Lindsay, global travel trends expert at Skyscanner , says three Mexican cities — Cancún, San José del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta — are among the top 10 destinations offering travelers the best bang for their buck in 2024.

To escape the summer heat, Phyllis Stoller, president of the Women’s Travel Group , recommends high-altitude destinations like Mexico City or Ixtapan de la Sal, a town near Mexico City with thermal springs.

Avoid European port cities

If you’re considering a visit to a popular European city that’s also a cruise hub, beware. Not only will you be battling the usual summer crowds, you’ll be joined by thousands of day-trippers flooding into the ports — meaning Barcelona, Venice , Athens and Santorini.

Sandra Weinacht, who co-owns the tour company Inside Europe Travel Experiences , says you can avoid some of the madness in these hot spots by staying in neighborhoods away from the typical tourist zones. You can also visit top sites in the late afternoon or evening, after cruise travelers have returned to their ships.

Better yet, wait to visit until the shoulder season

Go to Colorado

Epic hiking, breathtaking nature and more craft beer than you could ever try in a lifetime: The Centennial State is a domestic gem. Ashlee Collins of Inspirato , a luxury travel and lifestyle subscription service, says Vail is popular among members this summer. Not only is the ski resort beautiful sans snow, it’s drivable for many, cutting a significant cost for travelers.

Airfare to Colorado is looking more reasonable than other domestic vacation hubs. Nastro recently spotted a Miami-to-Denver, round-trip fare over the July Fourth holiday for just $199. She says an average round trip from major U.S. cities is running between $173 and $250, but those prices are expected to climb upward of $350 the closer we get to summer.

Avoid places at risk for wildfires

Wildfires have become an unfortunate fixture of summers in the Northern Hemisphere. Last year’s fires in Europe — including those in Cyprus and Greece — were among the worst so far this century, the European Commission reported .

Stoller says fire risk has been a factor in her summer travel planning; she nixed a New England cruise after remembering how bad smoke was last year because of the fires in Canada . “None of us can predict everything, but that would be something I would be aware of,” she said.

Extreme heat is also an issue. Last July, Southern Europe experienced excessively high temperatures from a “heat dome.”

“There’s a concern about heat,” Stoller said. “Last summer was really painful.”

Go to the Caribbean

The Caribbean has its peak tourist season during the winter, when Americans flock to warmer waters. That means summer trips to the region tend to be quieter and cheaper.

“You can go under $300 to pretty much all of the islands: Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Aruba, Dominican Republic,” said Lindsay Schwimer, a consumer travel expert at Hopper . She’s seen similar price point flights to Colombia.

Lindsay of Skyscanner also said Puerto Rico and the Bahamas offer some of the most affordable flights from the United States this summer.

Avoid Paris

Unless you’re going for the Olympics , skip the French capital this summer.

“Paris is always a top destination in the summer, but this summer … it’s going to be on another level,” said Madison Pietrowski, head of U.S. brand at GetYourGuide .

Not only are hotel prices high, “we’re seeing that some of the top attractions like the Louvre have raised their ticket prices,” Pietrowski said.

Nastro says the crowds are going to be “bananas” during the Games, and not just in Paris. Olympic travelers are likely to add on other French destinations to their trip, like Nice — which will host soccer games — or the Côte d’Azur, which already gets popular in the summertime.

Even if you try to get ahead of the rush by visiting before the July 26 start date, you may still have some Olympics-related headaches in the French capital. As the city races to finish prep, “you might find that there’s going to be eyesores and scaffolding and loud noises early in the morning,” Nastro said.

Go to rural Europe

Interest in Western Europe has not slowed down, and Americans are expected to surge back en masse this summer. If you’d like to avoid them, put rural European destinations on your radar.

Weinacht is bullish on Spain’s Rioja region , the Basque countryside and the central Italian region of Umbria, which borders Tuscany but does not see the same levels of tourism. She’s also a fan of Carinthia, the least-populated state of Austria. “It is castle- and lake-dotted, doesn’t get too hot, and oh, the food and stories the cities and villages can tell,” Weinacht said in an email.

Weinacht says she’s been getting more requests from Americans for trips to her homeland, Germany. The country is easy to navigate with its high-speed trains, and offers a mix of small and big cities spread across powerhouse wine regions, UNESCO World Heritage sites and many food festivals . According to Skyscanner, airlines in the United States have been increasing their flights to Germany — namely, Frankfurt, an international business hub — meaning you may be able to find more deals.

“They’re really going to be the most expensive and they’re going to be pretty crowded for the summer,” Schwimer said.

Southwest Airlines will no longer fly out of Bush Airport and 3 other airports after financial lows

S oon, you won't be able to take a Southwest Airlines flight out of Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport. After expanding to Bush Airport just three years ago, the airline says it's pulling out, leaving Hobby Airport as the only option for Southwest customers.

Southwest Airlines announced it will stop flying to IAH on Aug. 4, 2024, as part of a plan to cope with weak financial results and delays in getting new planes from Boeing.

The announcement comes after the airline reported a $231 million loss in its first quarter.

"We're also taking steps to restore an industry-leading financial performance that enables us to best serve the millions of customers who fly with us each week," the airline said in a statement.

CEO Robert Jordan said the airline was reacting quickly "to address our financial underperformance," including by slowing hiring and asking employees to take time off.

The Dallas-based carrier said it expects to end this year with 2,000 fewer employees than it had at the start of the year.

But money isn't the only bump on the tarmac for the airline.

"Southwest is really struggling with their delivery of aircraft, so that's really a significant struggle for them," Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports, said.

Unable to meet demand, Southwest will also stop flying to three other airports: Cozumel, Mexico; Syracuse, New York; and Bellingham, Washington; and implement capacity reductions in Atlanta, Georgia; and Chicago, Illinois.

The closures will help the airline focus on more profitable locations and deploy a fleet of planes that will be smaller than it had planned. Southwest said it's expecting only 20 new 737 Max 8 jets from Boeing this year, down from the 46 it expected just a few weeks ago. It will offset some of the shortage by retiring fewer planes.

Boeing is struggling with slower production since a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines Max 9 in January, and that is frustrating its airline customers.

Southwest said that its loss, after excluding special items, was 36 cents per share. That was slightly worse than the loss of 34 cents per share that Wall Street expected.

Revenue rose to $6.33 billion, below analysts' forecast of $6.42 billion.

American Airlines also reported first-quarter losses on Thursday. While demand for travel remains strong, including among business flyers, airlines are dealing with higher labor costs and delays in aircraft deliveries are limiting their ability to add more flights.

American said it lost $312 million as labor costs rose 18%, or nearly $600 million. The airline said it expects to return to profitability in the second quarter - a busier time for travel - and post earnings between $1.15 and $1.45 per share. Analysts expect $1.15 per share, according to a FactSet survey.

The first-quarter loss amounted to 34 cents per share, excluding special items, which was worse than the loss of 27 cents per share forecast by analysts.

Revenue was $12.57 billion.

CEO Robert Isom said American is less impacted by Boeing's problems because the airline had already received hundreds of new planes in recent years. American has ordered Boeing Max 10s, a larger model that has not yet been certified by the Federal Aviation Administration, but those planes are not due to start showing up until 2028.

"If they don't get it together, we have also made sure that we're protected," Isom told CNBC. He stopped short of saying American would switch Boeing orders to rival Airbus, saying only, "We'll take care of it."

In premarket trading, Southwest shares were down 9%, while American shares were up 3%.

But the airline isn't leaving Houston altogether.

"Because they have a really strong presence here at Hobby when they had to figure out a way to make their aircraft work with their network, it was one of those things where they decided, hey, we've got to pull out of (Bush) and concentrate on Hobby," Szczesniak said.

This is the airline's second split from IAH. They stopped operations in 2005 and returned just a few years ago in 2021.

Southwest will fully pull out on Aug. 4. Customers with flights after that will be contacted by Southwest to fly out of Hobby or to get a refund.

100-Year-Old Woman Mistakenly Identified as Unaccompanied Minor on Flights Due to Glitch with Birth Year, 1923

"I’m going through my second childhood," jokes the centenarian in an Instagram video

Gayle Kirschenbaum

At 100 years old, Mildred Kirschenbaum still enjoys traveling — but since reaching her milestone birthday last August, she’s had an unusual experience flying.

The centenarian, who once owned a travel agency in New York and is still a registered agent,  says she now shows up as an “unescorted minor” due to a glitch in the airlines’ computer systems.

“The code is two digits for the month, two digits for the day, and two digits for the year. I was born in 1923. So I put in 23,” Mildred explains in a video posted on the Instagram account of her daughter, Gayle.

“Soon as I check in, I’m an unescorted minor,” she continues. “The supervisor has to come. And they have to see me right through security. No one seems to know how to correct it.”

Mildred, who’s previously gone viral on social media for sharing advice on life and longevity, adds with her trademark humor, “I’m going through my second childhood.”

While the birth year error requires extra time to sort out at the airport before boarding, she tries not to stress too much over it.

“I allow myself a half hour at the counter,” she tells PEOPLE. “I'm not going to get myself worked up with it.”

The Florida resident shared the video ahead of a May trip to New York, where Gayle lives. But she’s taken multiple flights since turning 100, including traveling to London in September for a transatlantic cruise. And a quick jaunt to New York for an appearance on Sherri, hosted by Sherri Shepherd , just last week.

While the mother-daughter duo often fly Delta, they say the problem isn’t limited to one airline — nor was it caused by a booking mistake on Mildred's part.

“I was busy blaming her, saying, ‘Let me see what you did. You probably put it in incorrectly,’” Gayle tells PEOPLE.

However, Gayle then called a travel agency her mom is connected to and was told, “That's how it is. It's two digits in the system."

She adds that it now happens “every time" Mildred flies, no matter how they book the flight.

Delta confirmed to PEOPLE that because of how several legacy, industry-wide back-end booking and ticketing systems are built, the fields for customers' birth years only have the capacity for two digits instead of four.

"While it’s clear this customer is young at heart, she’ll simply have to check in with a friendly Delta agent at the airport to get her boarding pass," a representative for the airline told PEOPLE in a statement. "We appreciate her understanding and we’d love to hear her points on longevity and why she likes to travel as Delta marks our own 100th birthday next year.”

Gayle says she thinks the video she posted of her mom "has woken up the industry,” noting, “I'm hearing from people in the aviation IT area saying, ‘We're working on this.’”

Gayle has also heard from other relatives of centenarians who’ve had similar experiences.

“This happened to my mom too,” one commenter, who said her own mother was born in 1913, wrote on Gayle’s Instagram post.

Gayle says her social media followers also appreciated her mom’s playful take on the frustrating situation.

“They all love her attitude,” she says. “She makes light of everything.”

Never miss a story — sign up for  PEOPLE's free daily newsletter  to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Gayle describes Mildred — with whom she recently collaborated on a book, Mildred's Mindset: Wisdom from a Woman Centenarian — as “incredibly resilient and fearless” and “absolutely not her age.”

“Travel is in our blood, I have to tell you,” says Gayle, a photographer, writer and filmmaker, who made the 2015 documentary Look at Us Now, Mother! “We have had great adventures all over the world.”

“When you don't have this fear, you get to enjoy a lot of things in life and have a lot of adventures,” she adds.

Why Airplanes Fly at 35,000 Feet, According to a Former Pilot

The cruising altitude for commercial planes typically ranges between 30,000 and 42,000 feet.

fly travel in wow

Olena Ruban/Getty Images

Picture this: It's about 20 minutes after takeoff, and you hear your captain make an announcement. "Ladies and gentlemen, we've reached our cruising altitude of 35,000 feet," they say. Or, maybe they say 36,000 feet, or 40,000 feet, or 33,000 feet. Cruising altitude isn't actually a fixed number — there are many factors that go into computing this for every flight.

That said, planes generally fly at higher altitudes — usually between 30,000 to 42,000 feet — because the air gets thinner the higher you go. When the air is thinner, planes can fly faster and more efficiently, using less fuel to maintain the speed required to develop lift.

However, the air must not be too thin. "Most commercial airliners have what we call a 'service ceiling' of up to 45,000 feet," says former pilot Dan Bubb, now a professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. "The service ceiling is the point where the airplane can no longer develop lift, and gravity begins pulling it down to the ground."

Additionally, flying at higher altitudes allows planes to avoid most weather issues during the cruise phase of flight. Plus, there tends to be less turbulence at higher altitudes, according to NASA .

(An aside — flying at these high altitudes is why airplane cabins are pressurized. Even though the planes thrive in thinner air, the human body does not, so cabins are pressurized to a more comfortable level for the sake of their occupants.)

As for determining the specific cruising altitude for each commercial flight, aircraft dispatchers select the optimal flight path preflight. To do so, they consider factors like the specific aircraft and its weight, the wind and weather conditions, air traffic, and even the direction of the fight.

"Generally speaking, aircraft flying south, southwest, west, and northwest must be at an even altitude, like 36,000 feet. Aircraft flying north, northeast, east, and southeast must fly at an odd altitude, like 37,000 feet," says Bubb. "This enables air traffic controllers to safely space aircraft flying at different altitudes." Aircraft are allowed to pass within 1,000 vertical feet of one another, which is one of the reasons why planes stick to 1,000-foot increments for cruising altitude.

Then, once in-flight, the cruising altitude can change as conditions shift. For instance, if the pilots in one aircraft report turbulence at a specific altitude, those flying behind that plane may adjust their altitude to "find clear air," as you might hear over the loudspeaker.

The bottom line: As it goes with all things air travel, flying at a specific cruising altitude has everything to do with efficiency and safety .

How to Fly Your Kid Solo, Free of Stress

An illustration of children flying solo on the airplane.

By Alexander Nazaryan

For many parents and guardians, putting a child on a flight alone may seem terrifying. Belligerent passengers, delays, turbulence: All loom large in a caregiver’s imagination.

Life sometimes leaves no other option. Hudson Crites , 17, of Marshall, Va., was 10 when he started flying unaccompanied to visit his father in Kansas and later Georgia, said his mother, Chelsea Tippett. But the extra attention from airline staff made Hudson “feel special,” Ms. Tippett recalls. Other than a single tarmac delay, he has had no problems.

On rare occasions, children have had troubling experiences. In December, Spirit Airlines accidentally flew a 6-year-old to Orlando, Fla., instead of the intended destination of Fort Myers. Spirit apologized, fired the gate agent responsible and offered reimbursement to the boy’s grandmother for her travel to Orlando. But while the boy was unharmed, his grandmother expressed worry that he had been kidnapped .

If you decide to fly your child unaccompanied, you’ll discover that each airline has its own procedures, fees and routes open to children. While some may find the process complicated, flying alone may be exciting for your child, instilling some independence. Here’s what you need to know.

Before you book, know the process

Regardless of the airline or route, flying an unaccompanied minor differs from an adult or a family catching a flight. Airlines require a trusted pre-authorized adult to be at the departure and arrival gates, and will ask you at booking to provide contact information for those adults. They will also need to present identification at the terminals.

The journey begins at the originating airport’s airline ticket counter. There, airline staff will check your identification and check in the child, perhaps handing them a lanyard or wristband to wear. The agents will provide you with a pass to get through security with your child. You will accompany them to the gate, where you will hand them off to a gate agent. You must stay at the gate until the plane takes off.

In the air, the flight crew will keep watch — but will not babysit, or sit with, your child. If the flight has a connection, a crew member will walk your child off the plane and a gate agent will take him or her to the next gate.

At the arrival airport, the child will be handed off by staff to the authorized guardian or parent who should have already checked in at the ticket counter with proper identification, gone through security with their gate pass and be waiting at the gate.

To learn more about this process, read the Department of Transportation’s online guide, “When Kids Fly Alone,” followed by the website of your selected carrier.

Choosing an airline and paying an extra fee

Before purchasing a ticket, experts advise you to consider an airline’s on-time performance. “Solid on-time performance is hard-earned, and signals a carrier that has tight control of its operation,” said the Ask the Pilot author, Patrick Smith. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics has those numbers.

Booking procedures vary. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines require you to call. United Airlines allows bookings online. JetBlue Airways does online bookings, too, but asks for three printed copies of its forms upon arrival at the airport.

International flights may call for a notarized consent letter describing where the child is traveling, with whom they’ll stay and how long they’ll be there.

On top of the ticket fare, flying an unaccompanied minor can be pricey.

Southwest Airlines charges $100 one way for each child, regardless of distance. Alaska Airlines charges $50 per child if the flight is nonstop; a connection adds $25. On Delta, one $150 fee will cover up to four children, and American’s $150 covers all siblings, with no cap on number. United charges $150 for one child, or two children flying together.

Restrictions: There are plenty

U.S. carriers allow children to fly as unaccompanied minors once they turn 5 and before they turn 18. But regardless of your child’s age, make sure he or she is ready by discussing the trip details and your expectations of their behavior. No policy can replace your judgment.

The low-cost carriers Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Air don’t allow unaccompanied minors, Other airlines have restrictions that, in the broadest terms, differentiate between young children and teenagers. American and Delta restrict children under 8 from routes requiring connections. Both airlines allow children between 8 and 14 to take some connecting flights.

On American, no unaccompanied minor is allowed to take an overnight flight requiring a connection, or a flight that includes a connection on its final leg that also happens to be the last such flight that day (“unless it’s the only flight,” the company adds). Minors are not allowed on code-share flights.

United and Delta have similar rules. Southwest, JetBlue and Spirit don’t allow unaccompanied minors on connecting flights.

JetBlue prohibits minors from flying to Europe, and limits the number of unaccompanied minors in one party to three. Spirit does not allow children on flights to Central or South America. Southwest doesn’t allow children on any international flights. American, United and Delta let minors fly abroad, but restrictions on connections, code-shares and overnights limit options.

American and Delta allow children to opt out of flying as unaccompanied minors once they turn 15 — that is, the child can fly without the assistance of airline personnel. JetBlue ends unaccompanied minor service at 14, while Alaska has an opt-out option at 13. Southwest boasts the lowest opt-out age: 12.

However, you should be able to accompany your child to the gate even if they’re not flying unaccompanied. American requires that you do so for teens between the ages of 15 and 17, even if they’ve opted out.

What to pack

Have a plan to head off your child’s hunger, boredom and thirst. If they are older, make sure they have emergency money and a charged phone.

When her two daughters, then 9 and 11, flew to Denver, Joey Conover of Charlottesville, Va., had a long list for their carry-ons.

“Pack a backpack with iPad, headphones, lightweight book to read, a pad of paper and colored pencils (markers might smear), a small travel game, water bottle (bring empty and fill in airport), snacks, some kind of surprise fidget or animals to play with, hoodie, and a lovey,” she wrote in an email.

“Write your name and phone number on the inside of their arm in Sharpie and put a parent’s business card in a luggage tag on both suitcase and backpack,” Ms. Conover said. (A sheet of paper with all their identification, and their guardian’s contact information, also works. Simply stick in an easy-to-access pocket.)
