Congratulations to the #AGU21 travel grants winners
#AGU21 is less than four weeks from today! I am looking forward to seeing you at this meeting, whether in-person in New Orleans or online.
I am pleased to announce that AGU has awarded travel grants and fellowships to 239 early career professionals and students from around the world. These grants and fellowships will offset the costs of Fall Meeting-related expenses, whether incurred in-person or virtually.
AGU is proud to support the participation of students and early career professionals at #AGU21. All of us understand the positive influence that attending an AGU Fall Meeting can have on an early career, and we recognize that the participation of students and early career professionals at our meetings enriches our community as a whole.
Given AGU’s goal of creating an inclusive scientific culture and fostering the participation of historically marginalized groups across the Earth and space sciences, I am proud to announce that:
- 225 students were awarded 2021 student travel grants from 22 countries.
- 14 students and early career professionals were awarded the Berkner Travel Fellowship .
- 78% of the awardees are first-time presenters at Fall Meeting.
- 61% of the awardees identify as belonging to a marginalized community/vulnerable population.
- 63% of the awardees are non-U.S. citizens.
- 64% of the awardees are first in their families to pursue a post-secondary degree.
These grants and fellowships are made possible by generous donors and AGU funds.
We encourage you to help us support the next generation of Earth and space sciences. Please consider:
- Signing up to be a mentor through Mentoring365 .
- Volunteering to serve as a judge for the Outstanding Student Participation Award program (sign up opens 1 December).
- Donating to AGU by visiting https://www.agu.org/Give-to-AGU/Giving or use this form to donate by mail.
Once again, congratulations to the #AGU21 student travel grant winners. I look forward to seeing you at Fall Meeting!

Student Travel Grants
NASA's Astrobiology Program and Mars Program Office are funding a limited number of travel grants to qualified students to attend the conference. Reimbursable costs include transportation (airfare or mileage in one’s personal vehicle, compact car rental, fuel costs, and shuttle ride(s) – as allowable under government regulations), lodging, meals and incidental expenses, and the conference registration fee. In most cases, actual expenses will exceed the funding provided. Students who are awarded travel grants may be asked to assist conference organizers with tasks during the conference. These tasks will not interfere with their ability to participate in technical sessions.
Eligibility:
- Undergraduate and graduate students
- Students must be U. S. citizens or resident aliens formally affiliated with a U. S. college or university at the time of the conference, or the semester immediately following the conference, if during break.
- Preference will be given to those students who intend to present a talk or poster.
Applications must include proof of applicant’s affiliation with a U.S. institution. A copy of your current student ID or confirmation of course registration must be submitted with your application.
Students who are depending on travel assistance should not pay the registration fee or make travel arrangements until they have been notified that they have received an award. All applicants will be notified no later than late April 2019.
