CSU Now Offers a Graduate Certificate in Adventure Tourism

It’s no secret that Colorado has a booming adventure travel industry. Now, with a new program at Colorado State University, the Centennial State could shape the future of the industry worldwide.

Every year, an estimated $28 billion is spent in Colorado on activities like camping, hiking, skiing, rafting, climbing, and hunting. But the people who work in adventure industries often have no formal education specific to their job, which can make it challenging to rise up the corporate ranks after a certain point. Thanks to a new program at Colorado State University focused on the business behind adventure, that’s about to change.

The Graduate Certificate in Adventure Tourism is a 12-credit online program starting this month that focuses on topics like how to build an adventure tourism business, how to plan and lead adventures, how to brand, sell, and distribute outdoor gear, and how to market it all.

“[Tourism] is an economic powerhouse to the state,” says Mark Gasta, program coordinator and associate professor in CSU’s Department of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources.

Mark Gasta

As the former executive vice president, chief people officer, and chief sustainability officer for Vail Resorts Management Company, Gasta saw a need for specialized training among staff members who grew into advanced roles without any formal education on the business side.

“[Adventure travel] is really a passion-based industry,” Gasta says. “Most individuals have gotten into it as a result of their love for the activities. As the industry grows and as the businesses grow, there’s a real need for greater levels of sophistication.”

CSU already offers a masters of tourism management program in its Warner College of Natural Resources, which made it a natural fit for a certificate focused on the intricacies of adventure travel. Other adventure-focused degree programs do exist—for example, Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia offers a bachelor’s degree in tourism management with an adventure travel focus—but none are graduate programs and many of them are focused on guiding. CSU’s program differentiates itself with its concentration on entrepreneurship and inclusion of topics like advocacy for the environment and lobbying for changes in public policy.

“It’s not just going to Disneyland,” says Luis Benitez, director of Colorado’s Outdoor Recreation Industry Office and a former leader of talent management for Vail. He worked with Gasta to develop the new program. “If you’re talking about tourism in Colorado, you’re talking about the outdoor industry. Adventure travel tourism is a very specific niche that deals with policy, access to federal lands, preservation, and stewardship issues.” According to Benitez, running these businesses “requires a skill set that hasn’t been seen yet” in higher education.

The adventure travel market appears to be growing, as people seem to care more about spending their money on experiences. Last year, three quarters of Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) members—which encompasses tour companies, destination marketing organizations, outdoor gear brands, and other relevant businesses all over the world—surveyed said their profit outlook for 2017 was up from 2016. Because it’s online, CSU’s certificate program is available for tour operators and prospective business owners worldwide.

That could have far-reaching implications for the industry as a whole, says ATTA president Shannon Stowell. He agreed with Gasta’s assessment that this “passion-based” industry has been in need of additional educational opportunities. “More and more, we need to professionalize [the industry] and need people to be as well-rounded as possible so their skillset is relevant for the market,” he says. A course like CSU’s could “put a whole new wave of smart, fresh young people in a business that needs an injection of talent.”

For a long time, these jobs have been seen as fun, seasonal gigs, Benitez says. But finally, there’s “serious leadership to lead a serious economy,” he says. The outdoor industry has traditionally been led by people who stumbled into business because the products they needed didn’t exist, or they didn’t have an easy or affordable way to access them except to buy in bulk and sell to friends. Many legacy brands started out this way. Now, Colorado has a chance to train and create those future leaders, rather than wait for happy accidents.

“Who’s the next [Patagonia founder] Yvon Chouinard?” Benitez asks. Who will shape the future of the outdoor and adventure travel industries? “We’ve celebrated—and should continue to celebrate—those pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps stories. But having an opportunity in academia to make sure we have the right person at the right place at the right time will be vital.”

Interested? The deadline to apply for the fall semester is July 15. You must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and two letters of recommendation.

The adventure and outdoor recreation industry is an economic powerhouse in the United States, with  consumers spending $887 billion annually and a workforce of 7.6 million people . To help better prepare people to work in the industry, and improve the skills of those already employed, Colorado State University has launched an  Online Graduate Certificate in Adventure Tourism .

adventure tourism certificate

The new certificate program, a first of its kind in the nation, will provide students and budding entrepreneurs with the skills required to successfully develop and manage land-, water-, and air-based adventures. It combines information gleaned from industry leaders and natural resource tourism management theory with an emphasis on the practice of managing an adventure tourism enterprise.

“This course provides a unique opportunity for individuals to live their passion, while making a lasting positive difference in the world by transforming lives, increasing cultural awareness, and expanding worldviews,” said  Mark Gasta , associate professor of tourism and director of the Adventure Tourism program in CSU’s  Warner College of Natural Resources . Gasta is the former executive vice president of Vail Resorts.

“The outdoor recreation industry represents a new economy,” according to Luis Benitez, director of the  Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office . “The leaders of this economy will need to have a deep understanding of our natural resources, and how to integrate the components of innovation, health, and wellness into a vision for what comes next.”

The certificate program will accept students in spring 2018. The flexible online format will allow students from around the world to complete the coursework — six classes — at their own pace. Courses will include narrated presentations, discussion groups, and a range of multi-media content, including video interviews and discussions with industry experts.

The Online Graduate Certificate in Adventure Tourism is one of a number of programs developed by CSU’s  Department of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources  to serve the needs of students and professionals in the natural resource tourism and outdoor recreation industries. These programs include the Master of Tourism Management program (available on-campus and online) and an online Graduate Certificate in Ski Area Management.

Love the outdoors? Make it your profession. Colorado State University launches an adventure tourism program for the spring semester that will teach students to manage land, water, and air-based adventures.

The outdoors industry is big business. CSU wants to arm future leaders of outdoor recreation with the tools needed to capitalize on the burgeoning industry of adventure.

CSU introduces an adventure tourism certificate for spring semester 2018. The graduate-level certificate teaches students to build an adventure tourism enterprise with skills like policy and planning, marketing, and product development.

CSU Adventure Tourism Certificate

The program starts with a class called “Insight Into the Adventure Tourism Industry .” Students must take this class first, and the school offers it beginning January 2018. All courses are available online.

Designed for those already working in adventure tourism, the program follows a nine-month progression with the majority of coursework taking place during “shoulder seasons” when tourism slows and most professionals have more time to study.

Other classes include “Adventure Tourism Policy and Planning” and “Tourism Marketing Concepts and Applications.”

Business of Adventure

The certificate follows a report that  outdoors industry consumers spend $877 billion  annually, supporting 7.6 million jobs. Another report from the United Nations World Tourism Organization states adventure tourism is the fastest-growing category of tourism.

In addition to the mandatory introductory class, other courses teach marketing, policy and planning, enterprise building, and branding, selling, and distributing outdoors products.

Together, the certificate totals 12 credits and is open to outdoors industry newcomers, professionals, and students.

CSU graduate certificates  are different than degrees. It says they represent “successful completion of a focused area of study.”

The faculty consists of academics and professionals within the adventure tourism industry. Outdoor executives and trade professionals contributed to the coursework.

Zipline intern at Mt. Bachelor

TRAL student Dominic Vezzani has worked as a terrain park supervisor at Mt. Bachelor for the past six years. For his internship, he wanted to gain experience as a tour guide – and only had to look across the mountain to the zipline to find it. Launching from an elevation of 7,800 feet and dropping nearly 1,400 vertical feet — Mt. Bachelor's zipline is the Northwest's steepest and fastest. Groups of 12 are guided down three platforms in this multi-step thrill ride. Dom scheduled the other tour guides, communicated with ticket sales, and did a lot of problem-solving. "My self-confidence grew as a manager this summer," he said. "It's easier to have the hard conversations now."

James major.

“After 5 years working as a tour guide in Europe, I realized that it was the wilderness where I wanted to be guiding. But, I was woefully under-qualified for any adventure tourism jobs. I can’t tell you how happy I was when I discovered that the ATBO program not only existed, but that its status as a diploma program allowed me (a British citizen), to get a Canadian study permit and work permit so I could help support myself over the 2 year course. I took a gamble giving up a good career to come back to school, but so far it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.” Read more about James on our blog.

In 2013, Greg beat out more than 600,000 applicants to win one of six spots in Australia’s “Best Job in the World” contest as Kangaroo Island’s wildlife caretaker. For six months, Greg swam with great white sharks, hung out with kangaroos and helped to conserve the pristine natural environment of the island. After leaving Australia, Greg went on to his next best job in the world – launching an online documentary series called Travel Global Think Local. The travel series focuses on community projects that encourage empowerment, and sustainability and the actions of people who are making the world a better place.

Steve Cloke

Steve Cloke was always active and interested in outdoor recreation. As he grew older, that interest developed into work opportunities. Loving the industry, he decided to pursue a diploma that would give him the professional skills needed to thrive. “I researched several programs and this one was the perfect blend of small business studies and guide training,” says Steve. “I was interested in learning about the business side of the industry and not just the hard skills so this program was a great choice.” Through his practicum, Steve began guiding for 1000 Islands Kayaking in Brockville, Ontario. He is now the General Manager of the company and has helped the company grow from 10 boats to a fleet of 85.

Meet Your Instructors

Dave wan, program coordinator.

I initially earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Melbourne, Australia but spent a lot of my free time with the local SCUBA diving and bushwalking (back packing, rock-climbing, white-water kayaking, and skiing) clubs. I was first drawn to outdoor adventure sports for exactly that reason – the adventure. I also appreciate the challenge, the personal development, and the connection to the outdoors. My passion for outdoor adventure inspired me to complete a post-graduate diploma in Outdoor Education.

I have continued to pursue outdoor adventure because of the friendships and close personal bonds that are developed with others. You are often responsible for each other’s safety and that creates a long-lasting, deeply caring connection. Outdoor adventures became such an important part of my life, after a decade working in the field, I completed a master’s degree in Outdoor Education.

In 2006, I joined the College as coordinator and instructor for the Adventure Tourism Business Operations (ATBO) program, held at the Golden campus. I am very close with my students and get great joy from sharing my love of adventure sports with them and from helping them succeed. If you’re thinking of enrolling in the ATBO program, I look forward to having the opportunity to get to know you.

Away from work, I continue to be active. Adventure sports are what I do for work, what I do for play, and are what I do with my family. I’m exactly where I want to be, doing what I want to do and surrounded by the people I love. Life is good.

Gideon ‘Montana’ Smith, Computer and Natural Interpretation Instructor

Gideon ‘Montana’ Smith, Computer and Natural Interpretation Instructor Gideon completed a geology program at Cambrian College (now the Sault College) in Ontario.  He worked professionally for four years as a field geophysicist and topographic surveyor in various parts of Canada.

He then completed an archaeology program at the University of Calgary.  After working in archaeology for several years, Gideon returned to the field of geology, and worked with the Geological Survey of Canada for eight years.  While with the Geological Survey he participated in two field expeditions, one to the high arctic, and one to the Rocky Mountains on the northern edge of Jasper Park.

Gideon has participated in archaeological projects throughout Alberta and in the Northwest Territories.  During trips to Mexico he has also extensively photographed some 25 Mesoamerican archaeological ruins.

Gideon moved to Golden in 1990, and began teaching with College of the Rockies in 1991.  An earth sciences background, along with field work, and many years experience hiking, mountain climbing, ski-touring, and canoeing have given Gideon a wide knowledge of the natural environment.

Over the years he has also worked as a professional ski patroller, and has acquired expertise in computer spreadsheet and database design.

Glen Reisenhofer, Backpacking Guide/Instructor

Glen Reisenhofer, Backpacking Guide/Instructor Glen Reisenhofer has been climbing, hiking, skiing and backpacking all over North America since 1982. However, his favourite place to play is in the Columbia and Rocky Mountains of Canada. Somehow, Glenn managed to find the time to finish a science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Calgary.

The lure of the mountains changed his direction and prevented Glenn from getting stuck in a laboratory. He started guiding officially in 2004. Glenn received his backpacking certification in 2005 from the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides.

He also went on to become a professional interpreter with the Banff based Mountain Parks Heritage Interpretation Association.

Glenn is a freelance photographer and writer with 36 published articles and various published photographs. Glenn is often found at the crags or in the great outdoors with his partner Colleen and daughter Elsa.

Success Stories

Most of our students will have a job working in the industry before they even graduate – in the last few years, we have been approached by more employers than we have students!

OCEAN RIVER SPORTS AND ADVENTURE

General Manager, Lee Phillips

“Cedric Torres has been a great addition to our team. He has a really wonderful way of connecting with people. A tour with Cedric is based on true passion for providing a high quality experience for his clients.

“My best guides leave their egos at home. They come with open minds, ready to learn with calm confidence. They have something to share through life experience or research and can tell stories about the landscape. The best guides are authentic and are good with people. Guides that can read the crowd, pay attention to their clients and adjust the trip accordingly always have better trips.”

CEDRIC TORRES

2019 Graduate

“There have been a lot of lessons I have used from the program. Probably the most valuable was our training with group management. At the time, I didn’t expect or think that it was so important but I quickly realized that it was absolutely critical to being a guide.

“Also, building a solid foundation with weather systems, tides and currents has given me the confidence and skill to plan my tours and manage my group in the field.

“A really enjoyable part of the program was meeting and learning with my peers. I had a great cohort that I was proud to be part of.”

MORESBY EXPLORERS

“A good guide can handle the technical aspects of the job but a great guide has the soft skills to connect with people and communicate how incredible this part of the world truly is”.

In her first season after graduating at WAC,  Chelsea St. Louis  joined the Moresby Explorer team.

“Chelsea had a good level of professionalism and understood customer service and risk management. She is a huge asset and an exceptional addition to the team.”

Moresby Explorers

CHELSEA ST LOUIS

WAC Graduate

“What I love about my job is seeing people’s perspective change and be influenced by their time on the water and on the land. The wildlife is unreal and the landscape is awe inspiring. You are literally in the middle of nowhere. You have to be able to be prepared to handle many different types of situations from sudden inclement weather changes, equipment malfunctions to sea sick guests. From witnessing a baby orca learn how to spy hop to navigating 16’ standing waves to transport gear, any time I got into a situation I thought, I can handle this.”

FAREWELL HARBOUR

Tim McGrady, Managing Partner of Farewell Harbour Lodge

“We love hiring Westcoast Adventure College (WAC) graduates because they are well rounded with a great skills set. They are also just generally good humans. Students come with a high level of first aid training and a strong passion for sharing knowledge about the natural world.”

“The marine focus of the program is a huge benefit. Having the interface between marine and terrestrial is critical for our guides. WAC students are more in touch with the tides and currents and have a great passion for the marine environment. It’s obviously a program that motivates and excites them. That energy is channelled directly to their performance in the field.”

Marlie Temple

MARLIE TEMPLE

After graduating from WAC in 2019, Marlie started her first guiding season at  Farewell Harbour  Lodge as a skipper and bear guide. Her days were spent wading through estuaries in search of grizzly bears or looking for whales around the Broughton Archipelago. She spent her evenings giving ecology lectures to the guests to deepen their understanding of the natural world they are visiting.

“Everyday I am in awe by something stunning that happens out there. One of the best parts of my job is getting to share that experience with our guests. I see them realize how special and interconnected our planet truly is. It is incredibly rewarding to see people leave with a greater sense of awareness of themselves and the part they play within the environment.”

“One of our most memorable [WAC graduates], who started from the beginning, was Allison Lang. She worked up to operations manager and was one heck of an employee and an excellent guide.  Avelynn Anderson  was an excellent employee and team player.  Codey Cudworth and Ryan Miller were also great guides.

“Guides are ultimately 4 things: educators, entertainers, coaches and leaders. Great guides are knowledgeable, professional and have a high regard for safety.

“The goal is to have a fun time while creating a meaningful memory. Our guides are also coaches and can lead people through an experience that helps them step out of their comfort zone, build self- confidence and overcome challenges. It is ultimately a craft and a lifestyle.”

AVELYNN ANDERSON

2013 Graduate

“I’ve just started working for Community Living Victoria and Teen Community Connections. This position in relation to the studies I took with WAC were essential in me getting this job.  I will be working with teens with developmental disabilities and going out in the community doing various activities (Swimming, Summer Camps, Bowling etc.).

“I also worked at Adrenaline Zipline Adventure Tours and it was amazing!  It’s the best job I’ve had and couldn’t have gotten it with out my experience from WAC.  I will hopefully be returning this upcoming season, and look forward to another great summer.

“I’m beyond grateful for the knowledge I possess now due to Scot, Phil and Bryan. With my first aid and risk management skills I gained from WAC it gave me the extra edge in getting this position.”

Adventure Guide Certificate

The Adventure Guide Certificate is a 30-credit, eight-month introduction to adventure sports and the adventure industry with extensive time on field activity courses and compressed and modularized classroom course instruction. This is the ideal program for students wishing to explore their career interests in adventure-related fields.

This is the ideal program for you, if you ...

  • Are interested in an introduction to adventure sports.
  • Are interested in improving current adventure sport skills.
  • Are interested in exploring the adventure industry as a career.
  • Prefer a relatively short course of study.
  • Wish to transfer credit earned into further Diploma or Degree studies.

Risk Statement

At TRU Adventure, we use the land and water as tools to teach students technical skills, leadership and guiding skills. Our adventure sport courses include mountaineering, white water rafting, ski touring, sea kayaking, rock climbing, and much more. Field courses are immersive and can be intense.

Safety is a top priority at TRU Adventure, and we incorporate risk management as an essential element in all our programming. Risk and uncertainty, however, are central to adventure guide training.

Students are exposed to settings and situations which will challenge them physically and emotionally. The environments in which our courses operate have inherent risks which range from avalanches, to drowning, to falling rock or ice. Adventure sports by their nature have risks that cannot be eliminated and which we accept as part and parcel to the learning process of becoming a guide.

Since our start 31 years ago in 1992, there have been no student fatalities, but there are occasional injuries which range from sprains and strains to shoulder dislocations and concussions. While we have robust risk management processes to reduce risk, the possibility of injury and even death cannot be eliminated.

Areas of study

The Adventure Guide Certificate will give you the skills, knowledge and experiences leading to a broader understanding in the adventure industry and leadership within. Applied and practical modularized classroom courses are offered in wilderness travel, wilderness first aid, guiding leadership, wilderness environment, expedition planning and the adventure industry.

Leadership, risk management and technical skills are built within the following adventure areas:

  • Ski Touring and Avalanche Education
  • Ski Instruction
  • White Water Rafting
  • White Water Kayaking
  • Swift Water Rescue

Program structure

The Adventure Guide Certificate allows for extensive time engaged in field activity courses and compressed and modularized classroom course instruction. There are approximately twelve weeks of classroom instruction and twelve weeks of field activity courses that make up the program.

All course credit completed in the Adventure Guide Certificate is transferable to other Adventure Studies programs. Students who complete the Adventure Guide Certificate and wish to continue their adventure studies at TRU may ladder directly into the Adventure Guide Diploma. Providing the required entrance requirements are met, students can ladder into the following degrees: the Adventure Concentrations in the Bachelor of Tourism Management (BTM) degree, or the Adventure Concentrations in the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) degree. Top 11 Tour Guide Certifications

Photo of Brenna Goyette

Updated July 12, 2023 18 min read

Certifications are important for a tour guide in the job market because they help to demonstrate their knowledge and qualifications. Certifications show employers that they have the necessary skills and expertise to provide quality service. They also help to differentiate them from other applicants who may not have the same level of experience or qualifications. Certification can also help tour guides gain more confidence when dealing with clients and potential employers, as it provides recognition for their hard work and dedication to the profession.

The purpose of this article is to review the top certifications for Tour Guides and explain how they can help advance a tour guide's career.

What are Tour Guide Certifications?

Tour guide certification is a process that certifies an individual as a qualified and knowledgeable tour guide. Through the certification process, individuals can demonstrate that they have the knowledge, skills and experience needed to provide tours in a safe and professional manner. The certification process involves taking classes in tourism, customer service, cultural sensitivity, local history and other relevant topics. In addition to providing tangible credentials, tour guide certification also helps to ensure that tour guides are up-to-date on the latest travel regulations and safety guidelines.

Certified tour guides can help make sure tourists get the most out of their trip by providing them with accurate information about destinations. Tour guides can provide insight into local customs, culture and cuisine as well as offer assistance with selecting restaurants or attractions or finding the best deals on accommodations. Certified tour guides can also help make sure travelers stay safe by alerting them to any potential risks associated with certain areas or activities. By having a reliable source of information available for travelers, certified tour guides can help ensure that tourists have a positive experience during their travels.

Pro tip: Look for tour guide certification programs that offer a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on field experience, and online learning. This will ensure you get the most comprehensive training possible to become a successful tour guide.

Here’s our list of the best certifications available to Tour Guides today.

1. Certified Tour Guide (CTG)

Certified Tour Guide (CTG) is a professional designation for individuals who have completed an accredited training program and passed a certification exam. It is designed to ensure that tour guides possess the knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe, enjoyable, and educational tours.

The length of time it takes to get certified as a tour guide varies depending on the specific program chosen. Most programs require completion of a certain number of hours of instruction, which can range from 40-100 hours depending on the program.

To become certified as a tour guide, individuals must first complete an approved training program. These programs are offered by various organizations throughout the country and may include classroom instruction, field trips, and hands-on experience. After completing the required coursework, individuals must pass a written exam in order to receive their certification.

The cost of becoming certified as a tour guide varies depending on the specific program chosen. Generally speaking, most programs cost between $500-$1,000. This cost includes tuition fees, materials needed for the coursework, and any additional costs associated with taking the certification exam.

2. Certified Professional Tour Guide (CPTG)

Certified Professional Tour Guide (CPTG) is a certification program for professional tour guides. This certification program was created to recognize and promote the highest standards of professionalism and quality in the tour guiding industry. It is designed to ensure that tour guides are providing their clients with a safe, enjoyable and educational experience.

The CPTG certification process includes an online application, a written exam, an interview and a practical assessment. The written exam consists of questions about customer service, tour planning, cultural sensitivity and other topics related to being a professional tour guide. The practical assessment requires candidates to demonstrate their ability to lead tours in different settings.

It typically takes around six months to complete the CPTG certification process. Candidates must submit their applications at least three months before they plan on taking the written exam or practical assessment.

The cost of obtaining CPTG certification varies depending on where you live, but it usually ranges from $300-$500 USD. This cost covers the application fee, exam fee and any additional materials needed for the assessment process.

3. Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA)

Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA) is a program that recognizes individuals who have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the tourism industry. The program is designed to recognize those who have made a commitment to promoting their city or region as a tourist destination.

The CTA program is offered by Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI). It consists of an online training course and an in-person exam. The online course covers topics such as customer service, hospitality, marketing, and event planning. Once the online course has been completed, individuals must pass an in-person exam to become certified.

It typically takes about six weeks to complete the CTA program. Individuals can register for the program on the DMAI website and pay a fee of $175 USD. After registering, they will be given access to the online course materials and will be able to schedule their in-person exam at a local testing center.

Once individuals have successfully passed the exam, they will receive their official CTA certificate from DMAI and be recognized as Certified Tourism Ambassadors.

4. Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG)

A Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) is a professional designation for those who are knowledgeable about natural and cultural resources, and who have the skills to interpret these resources to visitors. The CIG program is offered by the National Association for Interpretation (NAI), a professional organization dedicated to promoting excellence in interpretation.

To become certified as an interpretive guide, applicants must complete a comprehensive training program that covers topics such as communication techniques, visitor services, resource management, and interpretation planning. The program typically takes between 6-12 months to complete depending on the individual's background and experience.

The cost of certification varies depending on the type of training program chosen, but can range from $500-$2,000 or more. In addition to the cost of the training program itself, there may be additional costs associated with travel expenses and other materials required for certification.

Once an individual has completed their training program and passed all necessary exams, they will be eligible to apply for certification through NAI. Upon approval of their application, they will receive their official CIG certificate and become part of NAI's network of certified interpreters.

5. National Association for Interpretation (NAI) Certification

The National Association for Interpretation (NAI) Certification is a professional credential that recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a high level of knowledge and experience in the field of interpretation. It is designed to help professionals advance their careers and provide them with recognition from peers, employers, and the public.

NAI Certification requires applicants to demonstrate their knowledge of interpretation practices through a written exam. The exam covers topics such as natural history, cultural history, communication skills, visitor services, and resource management. Applicants must also submit evidence of their professional experience in the field of interpretation.

The process for obtaining NAI Certification typically takes about six months. After submitting an application, applicants are required to take the written exam within three months. Once they pass the exam, they must submit evidence of their professional experience within another three months in order to receive certification.

The cost of obtaining NAI Certification varies depending on the applicant’s individual circumstances. Generally speaking, it costs around $500-$600 to apply for certification and take the written exam. Additional fees may be required if an applicant needs to retake the exam or if they require additional documentation or verification of their professional experience.

6. American Alliance of Museums Accreditation Program

The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) Accreditation Program is a rigorous process that assesses the operations and programs of museums against standards developed by the museum field. The program is designed to ensure that accredited museums are operating at a high level of excellence, providing quality services to the public, and managing their collections responsibly.

The accreditation process takes approximately two years from start to finish. During this time, museums must complete an extensive self-study report and host an on-site visit by a team of trained professionals. This team then makes a recommendation to the AAM Accreditation Commission based on its findings. If approved, the museum will be granted accreditation for five years.

To apply for accreditation, museums must first become members of AAM and then submit an application form along with supporting documentation such as financial statements, organizational charts, and policies and procedures. They must also pay an application fee which varies depending on the size of the museum.

Once accepted into the program, museums must complete their self-study report within one year. This document should include information about all aspects of their operations including governance, collections management, education programs, finances, security systems, visitor services and more. After submitting this report they will be assigned an on-site review team who will evaluate their operations in person over two days or more.

At the end of this process, if approved by the AAM Accreditation Commission, the museum will receive its official accreditation certificate and can use AAM’s logo in promotional materials to demonstrate its commitment to excellence in museum practice.

The International Guide Academy Certification (IGA) is a professional certification program designed to provide aspiring tour guides with the skills and knowledge necessary to become successful professionals in the tourism industry. The program is offered through the International Guide Academy, an organization that provides comprehensive training for prospective tour guides.

The IGA certification consists of two components: a comprehensive online course and an on-site field experience. The online course covers topics such as customer service, cultural sensitivity, safety and security, and regional information. It also includes interactive activities and quizzes to help participants learn and retain the material. The on-site field experience is designed to give participants hands-on experience in leading tours, working with customers, and dealing with different types of travelers.

The IGA certification typically takes between 6-12 months to complete depending on how quickly participants progress through the coursework. To get certified, applicants must first complete the online course followed by an on-site field experience at one of several approved locations around the world. In addition to obtaining certification from TIES, applicants must also commit to ongoing monitoring and reporting requirements in order to maintain their certification status over time. This includes submitting annual reports on their operations as well as periodic audits by third-party auditors appointed by TIES.

Do You Really Need a Tour Guide Certificate?

Yes, you do need a Tour Guide Certificate if you want to work as a tour guide. Tour guides help people explore their destination and interact with the locals. They provide information on the local culture, history, attractions, and more. Without a certificate, potential employers may not take your application seriously or consider you for the job.

Having a Tour Guide Certificate shows that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to guide tourists around a destination. It demonstrates that you understand the importance of safety, customer service, and cultural sensitivity when dealing with clients from different backgrounds. It also shows that you are up to date on local regulations and laws in regards to tourism.

The certificate is an important step in becoming a successful tour guide because it sets you apart from others who may not have taken the time to get certified. It gives potential employers confidence in your abilities because they know that you have gone through the necessary training to become qualified for the job.

The certification process varies depending on where you live and what type of tour guide position you are looking for. In some places, there are government-issued certificates while other places require applicants to complete courses or workshops before being eligible for certification. You can find out more about these requirements by researching online or contacting local tourism organizations or travel agencies in your area.

In conclusion, having a Tour Guide Certificate is essential if you want to work as a tour guide because it demonstrates your commitment and knowledge of the industry as well as sets you apart from other applicants.

Best time to travel: June for the “White Nights” Best gateway city: Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia Moscow and St. Petersburg Slide Show

Experience the art treasures of Moscow and St. Petersburg with guide, Amy Osaki. Begin in Moscow, continental Europe’s largest city, the seat of the government of Russia, and now home to over twenty billionaires! View iconic sites such as the Kremlin (which began as a fortress in the eleventh century), Red Square, and the sixteenth century St. Basil’s Cathedral. Then explore the art masterpieces at the Tretyakov Gallery, the National Museum of Russian Fine Art encompassing works from the eleventh to the twentieth century. Visit the Armory at the Kremlin filled with Imperial treasures including Faberge eggs once exchanged by the tsar and tsarina at Easter. Conclude your Moscow experience at the quiet seventeenth century Novodevichy Convent, one of many World Heritage sites included in the trip.

After a short flight, continue the trip with five days in St. Petersburg where you’ll be immersed in the opulence of Imperial Russia. Established by Tsar Peter I in 1703, St. Petersburg (known as Petrograd and Leningrad for most of the twentieth century) was the capital of the Russian empire for over two hundred years until the Russian Revolution of 1917. The Hermitage—said to be the largest art museum in the world with a collection of over three million objects housed in four main buildings—rivals the Louvre in Paris for both the quantity and quality of its treasures. Founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great, and open to the pubic for over two hundred years the museum is so vast that we’ll spread our visit out over several days and organize it by different themes. Also on the schedule is a visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress—the original citadel above the river founded in 1703—as well as some of the Imperial palaces in and around St. Petersburg such as Peterhof, a World Heritage Site. Peter I hired French architects to work on his many palaces, including Jean Baptiste Le Blond who worked with Andre Le Notre at Versailles. Consider enhancing your Russian experience by purchasing tickets to a performance—perhaps a ballet at St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre (also known as the Kirov).

Day 1 Overnight in Moscow Arrive in Moscow and transfer to your centrally-located hotel, your base for the next two nights. Enjoy an afternoon and early evening walk through Red Square (Krasnaya Ploshchad) past St. Basil’s Cathedral, and GUM department store all of which are back-dropped by the walls of the Kremlin fortress. Remember that we are here during the fabled “White Nights” when the summer days linger with light-filled evenings.

Day 2 Overnight in Moscow Within the walls of the Kremlin fortress, visit the Armoury Museum, one of Moscow’s oldest museums established at the start of the nineteenth century. The Kremlin Armoury was the royal arsenal; it produced and stored the weapons, jewelry and other regalia of the tsars. The museum’s collection encompasses four thousand items of applied art from Russia and elsewhere dating from the early fourth century to the twentieth century. Later in the day, visit the collection of masterpieces of the renowned Tretyakov Gallery. The Tretyakov collections were begun by the philanthropist Tretyakov brothers in the early nineteenth century. The gallery is recognized by many as a key repository of Russian art spanning the nation’s artistic tradition from early Orthodox icons to art nouveau, impressionist, and avant-garde works.

Day 3 Overnight in St Petersburg Enjoy a morning visit to the sixteenth century Novodevichy Convent named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004. The convent’s name is sometimes translated as “New Maidens’ Monastery” to differentiate is from the convent within the walls of the Moscow Kremlin. Surrounded by white crenellated walls, this complex of churches has remained essentially intact since the seventeenth century. Here you’ll find the five-domed Cathedral of Our Lady of Smolensk with its spectacular iconostasis and the tall, red and white Gate Church of the Transfiguration which is often cited as a fine example of “Moscow Baroque” architecture. The neighboring Novodevichy Cemetery is the final resting place of the likes of Anton Chekhov, Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Boris Yeltsin. This afternoon fly to St. Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city situated on the banks of the Neva River where it empties into the Gulf of Finland.

Day 4 Overnight in St Petersburg Start of your exploration of St. Petersburg with a visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress, the original citadel of St. Petersburg. The fortress was built to the designs of the Swiss Italian architect Domenico Trezzini in the early eighteenth century. Trezzini’s Peter and Paul Cathedral dominates the fortress grounds and its iconic golden spire punctuates into the Baltic sky. Later visit the Yusupov Palace on the Moika, acclaimed as an “encyclopedia of St. Petersburg aristocratic interior design.” The palace was the home of the Yusupov family from 1830 and 1917 and was the place where Grigori Rasputin, a spiritual mentor to Tsar Nicholas II and the Royal Family in the early 20th century, was assassinated. A visit to the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood built between 1883 and 1907 rounds out the day. The church was built in “Russian Revivalist” architectural style by Tsar Alexander III in commemoration of his father, Alexander II. The church occupies a conspicuous location on St. Petersburg’s Griboedov Canal and contains 7,500 square meters of mosaics; the interior walls and ceilings are completely covered by mosaics.

Day 5 Overnight in St Petersburg Seeing St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum in a day would be like trying to see the Smithsonian in a day! Rather than a forced march through the galleries at a rapid pace, we will slow down and savor the masterpieces. Remember, there are nearly seven miles worth of exhibitions! Today we focus on “Imperial Russia,” touring the rooms decorated for members of the Russian Imperial Family and viewing the art they commissioned and collected. This is the art that influenced the style of the grand palaces of the era. View the Grand Suite of rooms, Peter I’s collection of gold, and the jewelers art owned by the Russian Imperial Family (including Fabergé eggs, gold and diamonds). Here, too, are the rooms of Catherine II and her son Paul I with their fifteenth to eighteenth century French paintings and sculpture (Poussin, Watteau, Fragonard, Chardin, and Houdon).

Day 6 Overnight in St Petersburg Return for a second dose of the Hermitage! Today is dedicated to the famous European masterpieces exhibited at the Hermitage. Feast your eyes on memorable works by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Tintoretto, Tiepolo, Velazquez, and El Greco. At the Hermitage, you can revel in Rembrandt; there are twenty of his works in the museum’s collection. After lunch, enjoy the eighteenth to twentieth century masterpieces of Monet, van Gogh, Gauguin, Rodin, Picasso, Matisse and Kandinsky. Digest the art and reflect on this unique collection of human creations. Consider an evening performance, possibly at the Mariinsky Theatre.

Day 7 Overnight in St Petersburg Journey by hydrofoil across the Gulf of Finland to experience Peter I’s palace at Peterhof, a series of palaces and gardens that evoke comparisons with Versailles which Peter visited in 1715. Begun in 1714 with the construction of the Monplaisir palace and expanded by later Imperial generations who added Rococo and Neo-classical elements, Peterhof is now a World Heritage Site. The creative mastery of architects, engineers, artists and craftsmen from throughout Europe is on display here and all is choreographed to celebrate water in homage to Peter, the maritime emperor.

Day 8 Overnight in St Petersburg Go behind the scenes with an excursion to the Hermitage Museum’s Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Center on the right back of the Neva River north of Kamenny Island. This vast treasure house is only accessible by private tour. Later, travel to Vasilvesky Island across the river from the Hermitage to visit Menishkov Palace completed in 1721 and now the oldest stone building in St. Petersburg. Enjoy a farewell dinner this evening.
