History of Chowmahalla Palace

The history of Chowmahalla Palace dates back to the 18th century, when the first Nizam of Hyderabad, Asaf Jah I, decided to build his official residence near the Charminar. He commissioned his prime minister, Khan-e-Dauran Khan Bahadur, to design and construct the palace complex. The construction began in 1750 and was completed in 1869 by the seventh and last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan.

The palace complex consists of two courtyards: the northern courtyard and the southern courtyard. The northern courtyard contains four palaces: Afzal Mahal, Mahtab Mahal, Tahniyat Mahal, and Aftab Mahal. The southern courtyard contains the grand Khilwat (Durbar Hall), where the Nizams held their ceremonies and receptions. The palace also has a clock tower, a council hall, a library, and several gardens and fountains.

The project was completed in 2010 and the palace was opened to the public.

The palace has been awarded the UNESCO Asia Pacific Merit Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2010 for its remarkable restoration work. The palace has also been featured in several movies and documentaries, such as Jodhaa Akbar, The Last Nizam, and The Lost World of Hyderabad.

Chowmahalla Palace

The history of Hyderabad is so enticing that it feels like reading a wonderful love story and its glorious past is no less than a fairy tale. And the most interesting part of this novel forms the rule of the Nizams, which fills pages of history with legendary contributions of art, architecture and science.

A testimony to this aspect is seen in the form of the many exquisite monuments scattered all over the city. One such monument that in its striking sumptuousness still shows off the power of time immemorial is the engrossing Chowmahalla Palace. The name Chowmahalla refers to four palaces. The construction of the palace was initiated in the year 1750 by Nizam Salabhat Jung but it was Nizam Afzar-ud-Dawla Bahadur who saw that the palace was completed between the years 1857 and 1869. Originally, the palace covered 45 acres from Laad Bazaar on the north to Aspan Chowk Road which is on the south. The Chowmohalla complex is a replica of Shah’s Palace in Teheran, Iran. Presently the palace consists of two courtyards with graceful palaces, the grand Durbar Hall or the Khilwat. Gardens and fountains add to the elegance

Southern Courtyard is the oldest part of the complex. It comprises of four graceful palaces Tahniyat Mahal, Mahtab Mahal, Afzal Mahal, and Aftab Mahal. Northern Courtyard has been restored and is open to the public. The main attraction of this area is the Bara Imam, which is a long corridor. It has rooms on the east wing, which once served as the administrative wing. Another stunning construction is the Clock Tower. It houses the Khilwat Clock which still works perfectly.

Best Time to Visit Chowmahalla Palace

The Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad , Telangana, is one of the magnificent historical landmarks in India that reflect the grandeur of the bygone era. It is best experienced during the cooler months from October to February . During this period, the weather is pleasantly cool, making it comfortable for tourists to explore the expansive courtyards and grand halls without the discomfort of the scorching heat typical to Hyderabad. The winter months are also ideal for visitors because of the numerous cultural events and festivals happening around the city, offering a chance to experience local culture and festivities.

Avoid visiting during the summer season from March to June as temperatures can soar to extreme highs, making outdoor activities challenging and less enjoyable. Monsoon season, which typically runs from July to September , brings heavy rains to the region, which could potentially disrupt your plans to visit the palace. However, the palace looks even more beautiful after a fresh spell of rain, with the fresh greenery enhancing the historic charm. If you don't mind the occasional showers, the monsoon season could be a lesser crowded time to visit, allowing for a more peaceful exploration of the palace grounds.
