Ships of the Line

Publisher Description

In celebration of one of science fiction's most beloved franchises, an updated edition of the acclaimed Ships of the Line hardcover collection. They dared to risk it all in a skiff of reeds or leather, on a ship of wood or steel, knowing the only thing between them and certain death was their ship. To explore, to seek out what lay beyond the close and comfortable, every explorer had to embrace danger. And as they did so, what arose was a mystical bond, a passion for the ships that carried them. From the very first time humans dared to warp the fabric of space, escaping from the ashes of the third World War, they also created ships. These vessels have become the icons of mankind's desire to rise above the everyday, to seek out and make the unknown known. And these ships that travel the stellar seas have stirred the same passions as the ones that floated in the oceans. While every captain has wished that their starship could be outfitted in the same manner as the sailing ship H.M.S. Beagle— without weapons—that proved untenable. From the start, Starfleet realized that each vessel, due to the limited range of the early warp engines, must be able to stand alone against any attack. Thus arose the idea, taken from the days of wooden sailing ships, that every Starfleet vessel must stand as a ship of the line. Through the actions of their captains and crews, countless starships have taken on that role. Here we remember some of those ships and their heroic crews. In celebration of one of science fiction's most beloved franchises, this updated edition of the acclaimed Ships of the Line hardcover collection now includes dozens of additional images brought together for the first time in book format—spectacular renderings featured in the highly successful Star Trek: Ships of the Line calendar series. With text by Star Trek 's own Michael Okuda, the story of each of these valiant starships now comes to life. ™, ®, & © 2014 CBS Studios, Inc. I wish the pictures where enlargable.

SHIPS Alright.

As a hard-core and dedicated fan of STAR TREK in all its various incarnations, there is nothing more appealing and exciting than when an art book is freshly minted and is able to provide a unique look into the world that Gene Roddenberry has created. For the diehard fan, any additional glimpses whether in art form or technical illustrations that feature the iconic vessels that inhabit Roddenberry's universe – those are truly a special treat. The annual "Ships of the Line" calendars beautifully capture the majesty of the hero ships from the "Enterprise" through to "Voyager" and venture further into the final frontiers of "Deep Space Nine" and beyond. The large format end-to-end illustrations are wonderfully imaginative and capture the detail that makes these wonders so real to so many fans all over the world. As a printed feature this updated and revised "Ships of the Line" tome is a genuine diamond and for any enthusiast it will bring hours of enjoyment. As an ebook version here on iBooks, it leaves much to be desired. The presentation has little creative initiative and the images themselves are not even in a hi-res formate that makes them exciting to look at. The picture notes lifted right from the printed version are placed underneath without much enthusiasm – the ebook presentation could have benefitted from an iBooks publication that could have been more interactive. Not exactly a collectors dream, it won't break the bank, but it has little character, and deserves a better send off.

star trek ship of the line book

The upcoming hardcover/eBook Star Trek: Ships of the Line (2014 Edition) will celebrate Trek with an updated edition of the acclaimed Ships of the Line hardcover book. That means the new Star Trek: Ships of the Line edition will boast more than 75 new images, with all of the images brought together for the first time in book format and complemented with text by Star Trek 's own Michael Okuda.

Ships of the Star Fleet, Volume One/Revised is "The standard reference guide to the vessels of Star Fleet ", and an unlicenced technical manual written from an in-universe point-of-view, exploring the canon Constitution -class and Miranda -class and their non-canon class derivatives.

  • 1.1 Contents
  • 2 Background information
  • 3 External link

Summary [ ]

Contents [ ], background information [ ].

  • Though professionally executed, the authors have self-published the book through Guenther's own Holyoke, Massachusetts-based "Mastercom Data Center", which they have also used for their similarly executed 1992 follow-up volume Ships of the Star Fleet: Akyazi -Class Perimeter Action Ships, Volume Two/Number One ( ISBN 9993524794 ), as well as for the release of starship blueprint sets and art prints. Being both unauthorized and unlicensed by the franchise , not to mention mostly non-canon, Mastercom's publications are in effect fan fiction .
  • While the design was canon, the author-introduced " Avenger -class" became a popular designation circulating in fan circles, before Miranda -class became definitively settled upon as the class moniker by the production staff of Star Trek: The Next Generation over the course of the series.
  • Michael Okuda has used the on pages 74-75 featured blueprints of the USS Courageous (NCC-1861) Miranda , or rather Avenger -class, as coined in the book, to make adjustments annotations for it to become the Soyuz -class , introduced in TNG : " Cause And Effect " as the USS Bozeman . ( Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Continuing Mission , p. 161) The adjustment parts as designed by Okuda were built by Greg Jein for temporary attachment on the Miranda -class studio model .
  • Coined Decatur -class ( β ) on Memory Beta, the Belknap -class "Strike Cruiser", given extra attention in the appendix of the book, became later featured as a by Leonard A. Emery slightly modified CGI model on the June spread of the officially licensed Star Trek: Ships of the Line (2014) calendar, in its 2014 book derivative – as the USS Golden Gate ( β ) – , and as the solicitation cover for the 2015 calendar issue.
  • Reissued twice by Guenther as "revised" editions (in the process dropping Riel as co-author), the book, modeled after Franz Joseph 's Star Trek Star Fleet Technical Manual and Shane Johnson 's then recent Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise , has in its day been an influential and popular one in the world of fan-designed starfleet vessels as it served as the basis for expansions created by other fans, like Emery and the aforementioned Riel, adhering to the nomenclature and systematics introduced by the authors, precipitating a 1990s upsurge in the publication of fan-produced starfleet blueprints and technical manuals.
  • While in essence a work of fan fiction, therefore usually falling outside the purview of Memory Alpha, an entry for this book is warranted due to its use as a source for both the official live-action and the print franchises.

Recently viewed, grading system.

Every item in our inventory has been inspected, very strictly graded, and bagged for its protection.

Shrink Wrapped. Still in the original factory shrink wrap, with condition visible through shrink noted. For example, "SW (NM)" means shrink wrapped in near-mint condition.

Perfect. Brand new.

Near Mint. Like new with only the slightest wear, many times indistinguishable from a Mint item. Close to perfect, very collectible. Board & war games in this condition will show very little to no wear and are considered to be punched unless the condition note says unpunched.

Excellent. Lightly used, but almost like new. May show very small spine creases or slight corner wear. Absolutely no tears and no marks, a collectible condition.

Very Good. Used. May have medium-sized creases, corner dings, minor tears or scuff marks, small stains, etc. Complete and very useable.

Very well used, but complete and useable. May have flaws such as tears, pen marks or highlighting, large creases, stains, marks, etc.

  • Boxed items are listed as "code/code" where the first code represents the box, and the second code describes the contents. When only one condition is listed, then the box and contents are in the same condition.
  • A "plus" sign indicates that an item is close to the next highest condition. Example, EX+ is an item between Excellent and Near Mint condition. A "minus" sign indicates the opposite.
  • Major defects and/or missing components are noted separately.
  • Boardgame counters are punched, unless noted. Due to the nature of loose counters, if a game is unplayable it may be returned for a refund of the purchase price.
  • In most cases, boxed games and box sets do not come with dice.
  • The cardboard backing of miniature packs is not graded. If excessively worn, they will be marked as "card worn."
  • Flat trays for SPI games are not graded, and have the usual problems. If excessively worn, they will be marked as "tray worn."
  • Remainder Mark - A remainder mark is usually a small black line or dot written with a felt tip pen or Sharpie on the top, bottom, side page edges and sometimes on the UPC symbol on the back of the book. Publishers use these marks when books are returned to them.

star trek ship of the line book

With a large, lively gathering of Star Trek redshirts posing for a group photo, WonderCon kicked off at the Anaheim Convention Center on Friday, March 29. Now in its 36th year, the comics convention runs through Easter Sunday and brings together costumed fans, artists, authors and celebrity guests sharing their love and enthusiasm for pop culture.

The redshirts – who are renowned for often dying in “Star Trek” episodes – were among the throngs of Spider-Men, Batmen, pirates from the anime “One Piece” and Disney princesses who posed in front of the “Ocean Fountain” just outside the entrance to the convention center.

While waiting for more Spider-Men to show up for a prearranged group photo, Alec Zarate from Whittier, dressed as Spidey’s Venom symbiote, struck the superhero’s classic crouch position on the top of a garbage can by the fountain. A mask of the alien symbiote’s face sprang from the neck of Zarate’s black outfit on a wire, as a nod to Venom’s bond with Peter Parker.

“Venom’s really rowdy, but he’s friendly,” Zarate joked.

Zarate said he hopes to see a Saturday panel with Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel, co-creators of the animated series “Smiling Friends” from Adult Swim. This year, WonderCon’s panels will spotlight comic books writers and artists like Gail Simone and Dustin Nguyen , as well as the cast and crew of TV shows and movies such as “The Spiderwick Chronicles” with Christian Slater and “Boy Kills World,” with Famke Janssen.

Low-key con

Run by the same organizers as San Diego Comic-Con , the largest comics and pop culture convention in the world, WonderCon is known for being a friendly, more chill experience for attendees. There’s no nerves-shredding lottery system for badges, nor are the lines for panels and merchandise anywhere near as exhaustingly long as those at SDCC. At the time this article was written, badges were still available for sale on-site.

Inside the convention center on the exhibition floor, Barbara Robles and her family were playing pinball on a “Jaws”-themed pinball machine. Robles, her husband and stepdaughter were respectively dressed as Dark Phoenix, “Beast” and “Rogue” from “X-Men.” Her son Ezra, 9, was dressed as Sebastian from the children’s book, “The Impossible Quest.”

“He wanted to do his own thing this year,” Robles said with a laugh. “We all like to dress up, and usually we vote on the group costume we want to do. Last year, we dressed as Scooby-Doo characters, and we even had the Mystery Machine van.”

Regular WonderCon-goers, Robles said they traveled down from Lompoc to attend WonderCon, although they will head back home for Easter. “Even though we’re not here long, it’s a great family event for us.”

Droids from Star Wars roamed the exhibition hall, stopping every few feet for photos and videos with fans. Five-year-old Alison Yao from Pasadena struck a pose with R2D2.

“I’m a huge Star Wars fan,” said her father, Tony Yao. “So she recognizes R2 now.”

Yao hopes WonderCon sees good crowds this year, even with the rainy forecast for Saturday and Sunday. “I’m worried that the weather will put a damper on it a little bit. But it’s a fun weekend, so I hope folks still come out.”

A toy designer, Yao was attending WonderCon as both a fan and a creator of action figures. He works with some of the companies presenting merchandise on the floor, including Toynami.

Rather than the industry giants at SDCC, WonderCon’s floor tends to run to independent artists and small press. A couple of the bigger names this year are IDW comics, which will host a few of its artists for signings, and FiGPiN, which will have exclusive Star Wars Rebels , My Hero Academia and Scooby-Doo collectibles only available to con-goers.

Fans who needed masks for their cosplay could visit the “Mad Masks” booth run by Rachel and David Quintana of Mission Viejo. Rachel Quintana said they began making masks from their home 12 years ago.

“My husband was dressed as the Joker and I was doing Harley Quinn, but the mask that came with my costume didn’t fit properly,” she said. “So I made my own, and a couple extra, and sold them on eBay, and they were just snapped up.”

The couple have been selling their handmade leather masks at WonderCon for the last four years, and will also have a presence at San Diego Comic Con this July.

“I love WonderCon and Comic Con because I love seeing my customers in person, and just the buzz of the whole atmosphere,” Quintana said. “I look forward to it every year.”

Star trek is officially bringing back deep space nine's chief o'brien for its new god war.

Chief O'Brien has not been seen in the Star Trek universe for decades, but now he is set to make his grand return, just in time for the god war.

  • Chief O'Brien returns to Star Trek to join Data in a massive god war, marking a monumental comeback for the fan favorite character.
  • The upcoming Star Trek Annual 2024 features Chief O'Brien as Watson to Data's Sherlock Holmes in his quest to track down Lore and stop his sinister plans.
  • Chief O'Brien's return is a cause for celebration among fans, as his engineering savvy is expected to play a crucial role in Data's mission.

Warning: contains potential spoilers for Star Trek Annual 2024!

Deep Space Nine ’ s Chief O’Brien will soon return to fight in Star Trek ’s big god war. A fan favorite character, Chief O’Brien, has not been seen on-screen since Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s final episode in 1999. IDW’s new line of Star Trek comics has united characters from nearly every incarnation of the franchise in its massive god war, and now Chief O’Brien joins in Star Trek Annual 2024.

IDW shared their May and June solicitations with League of Comic Geeks , including Star Trek Annual 2024. The book will be written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Rachael Stott. IDW’s solicitation for the book reads as follows:

With no one but himself to blame for his brother's sudden escape during the Klingon Day of Blood, Lieutenant Commander Data sheds his Starfleet uniform for an ensemble inspired by none other than Sherlock Holmes to track down Lore's whereabouts... and figure out what sinister plans he's been scheming. With the one and only Miles O'Brien as his Watson at his side, there is no mystery that Detective Data can't solve!

The annual continues Data’s journey, which began in issue 17 of Star Trek. After learning a bit of critical information, Data’s memory core shut down, and it took Bruce Maddox many attempts to bring him back.

Maddox was successful, but Data then leaves Starfleet to continue his work–and he is bringing Chief O’Brien with him.

Chief O'Brien's Return Is a Cause for Celebration

Chief o'brien's star trek arc was one of the franchise's best.

Portrayed by actor Colm Meaney, Chief Miles O’Brien is one of the best-developed characters in the Star Trek franchise, having received substantial screen time across six seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation , where he was the Enterprise’s transporter chief. Mid-way through the show’s sixth season, O’Brien made the leap to Deep Space Nine , where he became a regular. The head of engineering on the station, O’Brien proved himself time and again by coming up with brilliant work-arounds and jury-rigs. Deep Space Nine was old and dilapidated, but Chief O’Brien made it work.

Chief O'Brien first appeared in the pilot episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation , but was not named until later in the show.

Chief O’Brien is a huge part of the franchise, but he has not returned to any of the new shows on Paramount +, but this year’s Star Trek Annual will not only redeem that, but insert him front and center in the god war consuming the galaxy. The solicitation mentions O’Brien will be helping Data with whatever crusade he is on, referring to him as the “Watson” to Data’s “Sherlock Holmes.” While IDW has remained mum on what role O’Brien will play, it will no doubt call on his engineering savvy. Data’s quest is in good hands with Chief O’Brien.

Doctor Who/Star Trek Crossover Planned to Send the Doctor to Deep Space Nine

Fans have been clamoring for chief o'brien's return to star trek, his star trek return now needs to happen on-screen.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine concluded in 1999, and O’Brien left the station to be a Dean at Starfleet Academy. O’Brien’s vast knowledge and personable nature make him a great instructor, but his true professional love is engineering. It is not out of the question for O’Brien to leave the Academy and come back to active duty. Chief O’Brien will one day be remembered as a great Starfleet hero, and he is soon to return to the Star Trek universe, ready to help Data in the god war.
