Ketchikan is a small fishing town known for its breathtaking seascapes, diverse wildlife, artistic spirit, and close-knit community. We invite you to experience a little bit of it all on our Lighthouse, Totems and Eagles Excursion.

While on board one of our tour vessels, you can immerse yourself in the beautiful views of our world’s largest temperate rainforest, the Tongass National Forest, in full panorama; admire the stunning artwork and cultural history captured in the Alaska Native totem poles and clan house at Totem Bight State Park; uncover the unique past and present of Guard Island Lighthouse; and keep your eyes open for a plethora of wildlife opportunities, including guaranteed sightings of American bald eagles.

SEE WHY WE'RE AN AWARD-WINNING TOUR

Lighthouse Excursions Icon

It was a cool and rainy day for this tour which turned out to be perfect for finding eagles! We saw 38. The crew of the boat was very attentive to the needs of the passengers... If you take this trip, make sure to enjoy the hot chocolate and salmon spread with crackers.

Could not have asked for a better experience! Our deckhand, Andrew, was instrumental in making it so as my daughter was on crutches at the time. He went out of his way to ensure she had a wonderful experience despite her lack of mobility.

We were lucky on our tour we not only saw Eagles. But even some humpback whales were near. Win-win! Super informative Captain who is a native Alaskan himself!... they give you some snacks to have love the dip they even gave us the recipe! highly recommend!

The wildlife wasn't in captivity. They showed up on time ....... The area was stunning, the crew was knowledgeable, and we got a sea shanty that wasn't advertised. Excellent tour.

As a local, I love this tour. I have gone on it and learned something new. When family or friends come to town this is the tour I recommend. The Captains are great at their job and the crew they hire are funny and informative.

This is a world winning excursion... The captain and crew truly do have so much passion in their service... We received hot chocolate upon arrival, home made delicious salmon dip and crackers as a snack. We saw at least a dozen bald eagles and overall had an outstanding time. Thank you to Anthony, Marcus & Captain Kyle!

Excursion Overview

Explore the world of commercial fishing aboard the aleutian ballard.

The Bering Sea crab fishermen's tour will have you set out into the calm protected waters of Ketchikan, Alaska on the Aleutian Ballad crab boat which was a part of season two of the Discovery Channel's award-winning TV series Deadliest Catch. The Aleutian Ballad is the only genuine Bering Sea crab fishing vessel licensed to carry leisure passengers. It has been completely remodeled to provide the comfort and safety you expect in a top-notch excursion. The Bering Sea Crab fishermen's tour allows people from all walks of life to stand on the edge of the commercial fishing world. It is a profession that has captured the interest and fascination of millions worldwide. Our heated amphitheater allows you to enjoy an experience unlike any other. You will watch the crew work through many different types of commercial fishing gear as you are educated and inspired by their way of life. Be prepared with your camera to capture the King and snow crab, octopus, prawns, and sharks, just to name a few, that are placed in the live tank on deck before being released back into the wild. Alaska is home to eagles, whales, seals, and sea lions. These magnificent creatures form images and memories that will live with you forever. What we share with you is the extraordinary experience of life aboard a beautiful working boat. What you take home with you - is the heart of its crew. An adventure so real - you can hold it in your hand!

Guest Reviews

On sep 2023.

This tour was excellent. Top notch. Professional. Polished. Not only did we get to see and learn a LOT - the owner and his crew were outstanding .

Informative, hands-on and very funny in a beautiful location. What's not to like? The crew work hard to give you an insight into this very dangerous job but also make time to take in the most beautiful scenery and wildlife.

The best excursion I did on this cruise. And booking with Alaska Shore Excursions was great. I sent a couple emails with questions that were promptly answered. Also, I was with the same group of people who booked their excursion through Norwegian so it was the exact same experience, only a lot cheaper. Would definitely use them again.

On Aug 2023

This was the best excursion of our trip! Big D, Kevin and crew put on a fantastic show not only explaining in detail what their job(s) entailed but also how dangerous they were. If your going to do an excursion, DON'T miss this one.

By far one of our most favorite excursions! The crew was phenomenal! There were seven of us and they made sure we were seated together! Loved that they had jackets in case you got cold. We ranged in age from 83-55 and we all loved it! I have already told all our friends and family to do this excursion! Top notch!

Totems, Tlingit, and the Tongass Are Tops on Ketchikan Shore Excursions

Alaska’s native legacy is clearly visible from the moment your cruise ship docks at Ketchikan , and happily, it’s equally visible in the nature and character of available Ketchikan shore excursions. As you reach street level at the port, there’s a colorful map that details not only downtown streets, but also locations of the town’s many totem poles and of buildings with totem carvings.

The totem poles are representative of the culture of the Tlingit tribe of Native American Indians indigenous to this area of Alaska. Many Southern Alaskans are descended from the Tlingit and throughout Ketchikan, you’ll see homage to that legacy. Ketchikan shore tours that put you in touch with Tlingit culture, including totem art and carving, canoe building, foods, dance, and most importantly, the Tlingit people, will create priceless memories.

As Alaska’s southernmost entrance to the Inside Passage , Ketchikan offers eye-popping as well as eye-opening vistas and experiences. And, when booking Ketchikan shore excursions, you can thoroughly explore the wonders of Alaska that persuaded you to taking an Alaska cruise in the first place: Unrivaled scenery that starts with Tongass National Forest, the largest forest in the United States; incredible crystal-blue waterways - Misty Fjords, the Tongass Narrows, and the Revillagigedo Channel to name a few; and world-class fishing for salmon, halibut, cod or crab.

Whether you’re an active or passive nature lover, you’ll find multiple Ketchikan shore excursions that fit your interests and activity level. For any nature lover, exploring aboard a luxurious cruise boat to the rugged coastline bordering the Revillagigedo Channel is a great choice. With guidance from an on-board naturalist, you’ll glide past Misty Fjords monument and wilderness area, see bald eagles and black bears, and gaze up at 3,000-foot high cliffs. You can also book specialized bear-watching tours, wildlife cruises, and rainforest expeditions in Tongass, including zip-line adventures.

If you’re looking to score a big catch, be it salmon or halibut, book half- or full-day charters, and if you’re lucky enough to reel one in, it can be cleaned, cut, packed, and shipped to you in the U.S. Fishing of another sort, that is, crab fishing, is a king-size industry in Ketchikan, and if you can never get enough of a good thing, there are crabbing charters that let you set pots in the Bering Sea, then help pull in the catch, and others that let you sit and enjoy a crab feast while viewing the glorious natural wonders of Ketchikan.
