Bajaj Avenger Street 160 Summary

Bajaj Auto had introduced the Avenger Street 150 which was later replaced with the new Avenger Street 160 owning to customer feedback. In terms of design, the cruiser remains the same as the now discontinued Avenger Street 150 model. It offers the same laid-back stance with an aggressive flat handlebar. The blacked-out theme has been continued featuring black powder coated components including the handlebar, exhaust, grab-rail and indicators. The alloy wheels are also finished in black completing the look. The biggest change, however, is the engine that is now BS6-compliant. The 160.4cc, single-cylinder, fuel-injected motor produces 14.8bhp and 13.4Nmand comes mated to a five-speed gearbox. For cycle parts, the Avenger Street 160 is equipped with telescopic forks at the front and twin shock absorbers at the rear. Braking is taken care with a 230mm single disc up front equipped with single-channel ABS while the rear continues to feature a 130mm drum brake. You can have the Avenger Street 160 in two colour options black or red. The Avenger Street 160 competes directly with the Suzuki Intruder 150 in the cruiser market.

BikeWale's Take

Bajaj avenger street 160 expert opinion, introduction.

I don’t know about you, but I had to go back and read up to keep track of the number of iterations the Bajaj Avenger has gone through. And, that’s not bad because if nothing else, it keeps the product fresh. And with it, it prevents the sales numbers from tumbling so low that it might warrant the discontinuation of the model.

Now, the Avenger 220 has had a fairly consistent run. No flashes in the pan, and no real slump to talk about. The same, however, cannot be said about the smaller Avenger. The latter started with a 150cc engine. It was well priced and reasonably fuel efficient. But, it wasn’t powerful enough to justify the ‘cruiser’ tag. And so, in came the 180cc version to replace it.

That too didn’t last long. Now, Bajaj says the consumers - who are mostly commuters - expected better fuel economy numbers from the 180. And therefore, the lukewarm response. So now the bike maker has brought in the 160 Avenger. And it says the new motorcycle strikes the right balance. But does it, really?

When it comes to bodywork, fit and finish, paint quality, and the overall look and feel, the new Avenger is identical to the older one. So, the paint quality is good all round, the switchgear operation is crisp, the fit is even almost everywhere, and the chrome - whatever little there is - doesn’t look cheap at all.

But, the silver finish - for the exhaust shields and the headlamp surround - looks a bit tacky. Even the matte finish, particularly for the plastic pieces, could certainly have looked more premium. We are also not thrilled about some of the welds either. The finish for these stand out like a sore thumb.

The seating ergonomics are one of the reasons consumers buy the Avenger, apart from its design, of course. Many commuters - and tourers - believe the low seat, the forward set footpegs, and the wide and easy to reach handlebar will make for comfortable seating. And it does. For the most part at least.

Show it nicely surfaced roads and you’d be able to spend a considerable amount of time in the saddle without bother. Even in stop and go traffic, the footpegs aren’t that far forward to cause you to pull a thigh muscle after repeated peg-on-peg-off use. Plus, the pegs being ahead means there’s nothing to foul with the legs when leg-paddling in traffic.

Now, mildly broken tarmac and low amplitude undulations are handled well by the Avenger 160 - the benefit of having a soft suspension setup, if you will. However, fail to spot a speed breaker. Or, try being brave over badly scarred tarmac. And, your lower back will take a beating. On most other bikes, one can just stand on the footpegs and take the bite off the impact. But, on the Avenger - or on any other leg-forward cruiser - that’s a tough ask.

Performance

The really new bit about the Avenger 160 is, of course, its engine. It is essentially the same unit as on the Pulsar NS160. It has the same bore and stroke and even the power output is nearly the same. It makes around 15bhp and a little over 13Nm, which incidentally is almost identical to what the 180cc Avenger made. Back to the NS160 engine, and the big difference between the two 160s is that the Avenger uses a two-valve head against a four-valve configuration on the NS.

On the road, the Avenger 160’s engine feels and sounds like the rest of its brethren. So, it’s loud. And once you are in the mid-range, the vibrations start coming in. Plus, the higher you rev the engine, the more the vibrations. Yes, it’s directly proportional. So much so in fact that close to its redline, a dot of light in the rear view mirror turns into a large circle, as if someone were light painting!

But, it also performs in the same tune as Pulsars. So, it has a potent mid-range. And, it doesn’t lose any of its enthusiasm and charm closer to the redline either. It’s an engine that doesn’t mind being thrashed and is happy to rev its guts out all day long. Needless to say, the Avenger 160 feels peppy and quick. It’s like one of those excitable commuters which can be fun when you are in the mood.

And don’t let that raked out front fool you. The Avenger is more than willing to be flicked from side to side in traffic. Sure, it doesn’t feel as alert or willing as some of the other 150-160cc commuters. But, it’s also nowhere near being lazy or cumbersome as its front end geometry might suggest.  Even at high speeds or the speeds it can do - just under 120kmph on the speedo, by the way - it feels stable and confident. But yes, around a twisty road, that front end does feel a tad vague which might prevent you from committing into a corner as much as you might like.

The Avenger is now old in the tooth. And it shows in the technology that the motorcycle has, or doesn’t. It gets single-channel ABS, of course, because it is mandated by law. But that apart, there’s nothing cutting edge about the motorcycle.

The cycle parts, be it the chassis or the suspension, are almost the same as it were in 2015. Or maybe before that. As I said, it’s not easy to keep track of all the Avengers. Also, the engine is still air cooled; the fuelling is still via a carburettor, and the instrumentation is as basic as it comes with just one trip meter as a value add.

Fuel Efficiency

One of the main reasons Bajaj has switched to the 160cc motor from the 180cc engine is to deliver better fuel economy. And on our city run, it returned a little over 48kmpl. Now, we know these figures aren’t great, especially for a 160cc motorcycle, but it is an improvement.

Fitness of Purpose

The idea behind the Avenger hasn’t been about ‘feeling like god’, as is widely conveyed. It’s more utilitarian than that. Especially, the Avenger 160. It’s about offering an easy to ride, affordable, and comfortable everyday commute centric motorcycle, which also has a healthy dose of aspiration. The latter has always come via styling for the Avenger series.

The 160 is easy to ride and it is comfortable for the most part. And, at around a lakh rupees on the road in Mumbai, it’s accessible too. But, it now lacks the aspirational co-efficient. Styling can only take you so far. Eventually, being current - be it tech or engineering- is important too.

The Avenger 160 has its pluses. Like we mentioned earlier, it is easy to ride. It’s also accessible, then be it the low seat height, its relatively light weight, or its pricing. But, it’s not an exciting proposition to own anymore, not with its styling being at least half a decade old, and with nothing of note on the technology or newness front.

What we’d like to see now is a complete revamp of the design. We’d like to see LED lighting and a smart digital console. And of course, some new and relevant features which would make the Avenger desirable again.

Great function and practicality make it a top choice among all, the Bajaj Avenger Street 160 is a total go-to two-wheeler model for absolutely all purposes. My buying experience at a nearby hero showroom was quite pleasing and smooth. The purchase range is also quite offering and is budget friendly in exchange for modern features that function very smoothly, providing hassle-free rides all along your commute. The ground clearance is good. This model comes with good fuel capacity and stunning looks as well.

Avenger Street Bike Review: Cruising with Style (A Rider's Perspective)

Nirmal Laxmanbhai Keshvani

1. Buying Experience: Walking into the showroom, the Avenger immediately grabbed my attention. The muscular stance and chrome accents oozed a certain attitude. The staff were helpful, explaining the features and offering a test ride. Finalizing the deal was smooth, and the bike rolled out gleaming under the sunlight. 2. Riding Experience: The first thing that struck me was the comfortable riding posture. The wide seat and forward-set footpegs had me cruising in comfort. The engine, while not a powerhouse, provided enough grunt for city commutes and highway cruising. Maneuvering through traffic felt manageable, though the weight might be noticeable for shorter riders. 3. Looks, Performance: The Avenger commands attention on the road. The muscular design, blacked-out elements, and chrome touches give it a distinct personality. Performance-wise, it's a cruiser, not a speed demon. It excels in relaxed riding, offering a smooth power delivery at moderate speeds. 4. Servicing and Maintenance: Bajaj service centers are widely available, making maintenance hassle-free. The Avenger itself isn't complex to maintain, and parts are readily accessible. Regular servicing ensures a smooth ride and prolongs the bike's life. 5. Pros and Cons: Pros: Comfort: Excellent for long rides due to the relaxed riding posture. Style: Stands out from the crowd with its bold design. Mileage: Offers decent fuel economy for a cruiser in its segment. Maintenance: Easy to maintain with readily available parts and service network. Cons: Power: Not ideal for those seeking powerful acceleration or high-speed riding. Weight: The heavier weight might be challenging for shorter riders to maneuver in tight spaces. Features: Lacks some modern features like a fully digital instrument cluster. Overall: The Avenger Street is a cruiser bike built for those who prioritize comfort and style over raw power. It's a perfect companion for relaxed rides, weekend getaways, and cruising around town. While it might not be the choice for adrenaline seekers, it offers a unique riding experience with a touch of old-school charm.

I've owned the Bajaj Avenger for years, and it has consistently delivered a great riding experience. The sleek design, comfortable seating, and powerful engine make it an ideal choice for long rides. Its fuel efficiency has also impressed me. Overall, the Bajaj Avenger has been a reliable and enjoyable companion on the road. In 3-4years the most I had to spend ever on one repair was 4k else my every service costs less than 1k.

It has a small battery so make sure you don't add too much lights it drains faster

Bajaj Avenger 160- Users Feedback

Javeed Ahmed Soudagar

I Bought Bajaj Avenger 160 street bike in the month of January 2016. The mileage of the vehicle is very poor in the range of 30 to 35 kms/Litre. The handle lock and bike start/off key location are in different areas. Accidently I did not remove the handle lock and used the and started the bike and fell. There is no indication that the handle is locked and the bike got started which led to the accident this is very dangerous. The length of the bike is long and difficult to take turns. Not good for city-level riders. Good for long journeys and tours.

Occasional Commute

< 3 months

Handle lock to be opened first than ignition to be started as the key location for both the purposes are at different location. User may fell to ground if he forgets to open the handle lock before ignition- No foul proof system in this area.

The buying experience was awesome as I got a good dealer it was done in a matter of a half hour and in 7 days all paperwork was done from the dealer only Riding is a mix of experiences city is good and comfortable but long rides were not good for me to sprain in my spine seat could have been a good Looks and performance are great service and maintenance are well done by the company and goes Pro Good power, Catchy looks, and Good suspension. Cons Need good comfort seat for rider Tyre could be good like Ralco Speed Blaster better for off-road and city rides

Daily Commute

10000-15000 kms

Lubrication of chain has to be done periodically oil change in around 3000 kms any 20w 50 but fully synthetic oil Better to get a good comfort seat that has grip not slippery default one slips a lot

Bajaj Avenger Street 160 Overview

What's new.

On May 10, 2019, Bajaj Auto introduced the new Bajaj Avenger Street 160 ABS in India. The new Avenger Street 160 is the Pune-based two-wheeler manufacturer's most unique entry-level cruiser motorbike. The bike replaces the Bajaj Avenger Street 180, which was previously available in India. With a street control handlebar, low-slung seat, and alloy wheels, the new Bajaj Avenger Street 160 combines roadster and cruiser design languages. A single-channel Anti-Locking Braking System (ABS) is also standard on the motorbike.

The new Bajaj Avenger Street 160 has a roadster headlight with LED daytime running lights, a blackened engine, and a relaxed riding position, similar to the larger Avenger Street models (180 and 220). New artwork and a more prominent logo have been added, and black alloy wheels and a rubberized rear grip rail.

The 160.4 cc single-cylinder engine of the 2019 Bajaj Avenger Street 160 ABS produces 14.7 bhp and 13.5 Nm of max torque. The output is superior to that of the Avenger 150 and identical to that of the Avenger 180. The power-to-weight ratio has increased substantially from the previous Avenger 150's power output of 98 bhp to 103.3 bhp.

A 5-speed manual gearbox is included with the power plant. The bike has an upright posture with a low slung seat and a unique extended footrest position for optimal riding comfort, while the 177 mm ground clearance makes city and highway riding more pleasant. Telescopic forks in the front and dual shock absorbers in the back handle the suspension chores. The braking performance is provided by a 220 mm single disc up front with single-channel ABS, while the rear wheel gets a drum brake.

Specifications & Features

Explore an in-depth overview of the Bajaj Avenger Street 160 specifications and features, offering comprehensive details on its engine, fuel efficiency, mileage, brakes, max power, and tyre. Additionally, gain insights into the bike's advanced safety features.

Bajaj Avenger Street 160 Expert Review

  • Good stability
  • Decent engine
  • Affordable cruiser
  • Lack features
  • Dated design
  • Braking could be better

The Bajaj Avenger Street 160 offers an affordable package in a cruiser-like design over what is essentially a commuter motorcycle. Ergonomics are feet forward and the suspension is softly sprung, not so great while going over broken surfaces. While the engine is good enough to potter around the city, the Avenger Street 160 is happiest at speeds under 80 kmph, and that limits its touring capabilities.

How is the design of the Bajaj Avenger Street 160?

The Avenger Street 160 is a well-built motorcycle with a low-slung cruiser appearance. The seat height is low for a relaxed riding stance, the wheelbase is longer, and the footpegs are positioned front. A circular headlamp, a simple digital Plus analogue speedometer, and a streamlined fuel tank are all standard features. The seat is made up of a single component that acts as a step. The construction quality and fit-and-finish of the various pieces are satisfactory. Alloy wheels contribute to the whole package's sportiness and street-oriented design language.

How does the Bajaj Avenger Street 160 Ride?

The Avenger Street is a cruiser-style motorbike that puts the rider in an upright riding position with a straight handlebar that is simple to reach. The foot pegs are placed forward for a more relaxed riding experience. For city and short highway journeys, the seat is well-cushioned, and the suspension is capable of handling a variety of road conditions.

The quality of the ride is also unchanged. The seat is comfortable, and the suspension is a little squishy. The rear tends to bottom out when driving over a deep pothole. Because of the feet-forward seating position, you'll receive a shock up your spine when it does that. Speaking of ergonomics, I'm not a fan of the bike's - your feet are front as on a cruiser, but the handlebars are more in line with a typical street motorbike, and this does tax your core over extended periods.

How comfortable is Bajaj Avenger Street 160?

Apart from its appearance, the Avenger's sitting ergonomics are one of the reasons people buy it. Many commuters and tourers feel that the low seat, forward-set foot pegs, and wide, easy-to-reach handlebar will provide comfortable sitting. It does so, for most of the part.

Show its well-maintained roads, and you'll be able to spend a lot of time in the saddle without any problems. Even in stop-and-go traffic, the foot pegs aren't far enough forward to cause a thigh muscle to tear from frequent peg-on-peg-off use. Furthermore, because the pegs are in front, there is nothing to foul with the legs while leg-paddling in traffic.

How's the tech?

Following are the tech features offered by the Bajaj Avenger Street 160:

  • Speedometer - Digital
  • Gear Indicator
  • Fuel Warning Indicator
  • Pillion Seat
  • Pillion Grabrail
  • Engine Kill Switch
  • Tripmeter Type - Digital
  • Tripmeter Count

How's the mileage of the Bajaj Avenger Street 160?

Bajaj chose the 160cc engine over the 180cc engine for various reasons, one of which was to improve fuel efficiency. It also returned a bit over 45kmpl on our city run. These statistics aren't ideal, especially for a 160cc motorbike, but they're a step forward.

How's the performance of Bajaj Avenger Street 160?

The Avenger 160's engine is, of course, the most innovative feature. On the Pulsar NS160, it's effectively the same device. It features the same bore and stroke, as well as a virtually identical power output. It produces about 15 bhp and a little over 13 Nm, which is nearly similar to the 180cc Avenger's output. Back to the NS160 engine, the main difference between the two is that the Avenger has a two-valve head, whilst the NS has a four-valve authority.

The Avenger 160's engine feels and sounds like the rest of its siblings on the road. As a result, it's rather loud. The vibrations begin to come in as you reach the mid-range. Furthermore, the vibrations increase when the engine is revved higher. Yes, it's a linear proportional relationship. So much so that a dot of light in the rear view mirror transforms into a massive circle as it approaches its redline, as if someone were light painting!

Is Bajaj Avenger Street 160 a good value?

The Avenger 160 Street ABS is now officially the most inexpensive cruiser on the market. The Bajaj Avenger 160 Street ABS is India's most inexpensive cruiser, priced at Rs 1.01 (ex-showroom Delhi). It is Rs 6,000 less expensive than the previous Avenger 180, but it has additional functionality. In fact, the Suzuki Intruder 150, the next best option, costs Rs 12,400 more!

Aside from being a good deal, the Avenger 160 accomplishes everything you'd expect from an entry-level city cruiser. Yes, it lacks the lungs for lengthy highway trips, but there's always the option of upgrading to the 220cc model. The Avenger 160 Street is a good choice for people looking for a city commuter that can also be used on weekends.
