Steve Schirripa talks James Gandolfini and how Jerry Stiller was almost a Soprano

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – George Costanza’s dad a Soprano?

It almost happened.

That’s one of the behind-the-scenes secrets you might hear about the iconic mob drama “The Sopranos” when the live event “In Conversation with The Sopranos” comes to the St. George Theatre on Feb. 12.

“We give you a little peek behind the curtain,” said Steve Schirripa, who played Bobby “Bobby Bacala” Baccalieri on the HBO series, “what went on, what the vibe was.”

Joining Schirripa at the live event are Michael Imperioli, who played Christopher Moltisanti on the show, and Vincent Pastore, who portrayed Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero.

And, yes, comedian Jerry Stiller, who played Frank Costanza on “Seinfeld,” was almost a part of the Sopranos TV mob.

Schirripa told the Advance that Stiller was set to play the role of Herman “Hesh” Rabkin, unofficial consigliere to mob boss Tony Soprano, “and at the last minute didn’t take it.”

That wasn’t the only potential Sopranos switcheroo.

Schirripa said he originally read for the role of FBI agent Skip Lipari, while Dominic Chianese, who played “Uncle Junior” Soprano on the show, read for the role of Big Pussy.

Schirripa, Imperioli and Pastore have toured the Sopranos live event across the country and to Australia. There’s been a Sopranos podcast, “Talking Sopranos” as well, and Schirripa and Imperioli also wrote “Woke Up This Morning,” an oral history of “The Sopranos.”

The live event, hosted by comedian Joey Kola, sees the three actors swap inside stories about the series, show “Sopranos” clips and take questions from the audience.

“This is their chance to ask a Soprano a question, any question they want,” Schirripa said. “We’ll answer anything.”

Of course, one of the top questions is what really happened to Tony, played by the late James Gandolfini, after the famous cut-to-black final scene of the series.

“I think Tony Soprano is alive and well,” Schirripa said. “Maybe that’s just wishful thinking, but that’s what I think. Sometimes I go, maybe he did die. Maybe I just want to believe that he’s alive and well and he’s in New Jersey somewhere.”

What do Imperioli and Pastore think?

“Michael has flip-flopped,” Schirripa said. “I don’t know what Vinny thinks. No one knows what Vinny thinks.”

Once in a while, Schirripa said, an audience member will come up with a question that surprises and stumps the actors. One, he said, involved Tony’s treacherous mother, Livia, played by Nancy Marchand.

“Somebody asked us, what would have happened if Tony Soprano’s mother didn’t die?” he said. “Great question. I don’t really know. She was going to snitch on Tony.”

Audience members also want to hear about Gandolfini, the three-time Emmy Award winner who died suddenly in 2013.

“Jim was a very close friend of the three of us,” Schirripa said. “He was very generous. We talk about how after he passed away, he’d paid off people’s mortgages. He’d loaned them money. He’d given them money. He helped a lot of people. The guy was a good guy.”

Some fans, Schirripa said, are even more knowledgeable about “The Sopranos” than the cast members.

“They’ll bring up stuff, you know, ‘Season four, episode 12 …,’” he said. “You get a lot of that. A lot of these people have seen [the series] a lot more than I have.”

Schirripa said he re-watched the series as part of his work with the podcast, book and live tour, and that “The Sopranos” still holds up after all these years.

“I hadn’t watched it in 20 years,” Schirripa said. “I watched each episode two or three times. The thing is brilliant. It’s funny.”

And he said he’s come to better appreciate the storyline between Tony and his psychiatrist, Dr. Jennifer Melfi, played by Lorraine Bracco.

“I love the stuff with Melfi,” Schirripa said. “It used to bore me when I was younger. But now that I’m older, I think the stuff with Tony and Melfi is fantastic.”

Schirripa, seen on TV these days as Detective Anthony Abetemarco on “Blue Bloods,” was working as a hotel executive in Las Vegas and “dabbling in acting” when he landed the role on “The Sopranos.”

He said being on the show was “like hitting the lottery twice” and that he believes “The Sopranos” will endure.

“Fifty years from now, people will still be watching,” Schirripa said, “the way that we watch ‘The Honeymooners’ and these other shows from years and years ago.”

“In Conversation with The Sopranos” will be at the St. George Theatre, 35 Hyatt St., on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or at the theater box office. You can contact the theater at 718-442-2900 or [email protected] .

TOURS STOPS & DETAILS

  • Chevron down From Manhattan to “Sopranoland”

The tour begins in New York and starts out with sites as seen in the opening credits, including the exit of the Lincoln Tunnel and the famous Manhattan skyline. As you arrive in Jersey, you’ll see more sites including The Muffler Man, Pizza Land, a featured Tudor house, and the ramp to the Pulaski Skyway as seen at the end of every episode.

The tour then hits some more recognizable places: Barone Sanitation, the Skyway Diner, Big Pussy’s auto body shop, and Satin Dolls, also known as the Bada Bing.

The tour visits major sites that were used in filming the show such as Cozzarelli’s; Party Box (now unoccupied), Car Wash, Searchlight Diner and St. Cecilia’s Church, all of which were locations for major scenes as seen in the series.

Get off the bus for a fun stop at Holsten’s (where the final scene of the last episode was shot) and feel free to order some onion rings! Sit in “Tony’s” booth with your family for a nostalgic photo to share with friends.

Another major location, Satriale’s Pork Store, was a fictional establishment that was housed in an empty warehouse next to the Irish American Club in Kearny.  The set was dismantled after the filming of the series concluded, and the building was torn down to make way for condominiums, which never happened!

More filming locations include the Gold Driving Range, Harrison High School, Seabra’s Rodizio, the statue of Christopher Columbus, St. Cecilia’s, the Nuovo Vesuvio; and many, many more.

  • Chevron down You Gotta Eat…

During the tour, you’ll get the chance to eat at Holsten’s Diner. If you’d rather venture on your own after the tour, grab a bite to eat in the great Manhattan neighborhood of Little Italy.

Just follow the red, white, and green parking meters along Mulberry Street (between Grand and Canal streets) and you will find more Italian eateries than you could ever hope to visit in a single trip, like Amici II, Café Roma, Casa Bella, Lombardi’s, Fratelli, Caffe Sorrento, Il Palazzo, and more.

In the late 1800s, an influx of Italian immigrants created a Little Italy that wasn’t so little. Now, it is a bit smaller, with only a few thousand Italian-Americans calling Little Italy their home. However, the neighborhood has never lost its charm.

Stop by Umberto’s Clam House, or Il Cortile to have a delicious lunch or dinner. Try La Mela for family-style Italian or Grotta Azzura for upscale Italian. Skip dessert and grab some great cannolis over at Ferrara Bakery and Café, or enjoy a glass of wine and tiramisu at one of the many outdoor cafes.

Let me tell you, it is true what they say, French is the BEST language to rap in!

Soprano, the Marseille, France, born star is flawless. His flow is tight, his word play is immense and even his singing vocals are on point.

Soprano had the place PACKED out, he was amazing, so much energy so much stamina, I was out of breath just dancing along with the audience.

The audience was commanded, letting us feel apart of his performance, most artists don't do this but Soprano let us feek like we were a part of something big.

When performing his song 'Crazy' he let the audience sing the chorus, and there was not a single body in the audience that did not know the words, this is what HIP HOP is about, not setting people apart and determining who is better than who but bringing us all together. The lights were immense and a gentle mist went into the air, the atmosphere was so wild you could just let yourself go and really get into the music, how many other shows let you even get close to doing that?

Then 'Victory' was performed and there was so much emotion in Soprano and you could really feel it, that this song meant so much to him. Perhaps this was his victory because when the beat cut out and all that could be heard was his voice and fan girls screaming, you could hear the power in his voice to the point it made the hairs on my neck stand and goosebumps cover my skin!

Language is nothing, language is but a barrier and barriers are easily broken. When something sounds as good as this you will learn the language by accident, it is that real.

Soprano is supreme and he needs to be heard!
