A backpack designed for kids is the best way to store any and all carry-on essentials in one easy-to-access place. From packing snacks to technology, a kids travel backpack can be a game-changer on your next family vacation, ensuring they have what they need on long journeys.

Our expert product-testing parents and their children tried 38 kids backpacks from brands like Nike, Lululemon, Jansport, and more to find the best of the best for durability, comfort, design, and capacity. After carefully reviewing each backpack, we're recommending the most durable, comfortable, and functional bags for all ages ranging from preschoolers to seniors in high school.

Best Overall, Younger Kids

Wildkin jurassic dinosaurs backpack.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5

The backpack has comfy padded straps and a material that spot cleans easily.

There aren’t many pockets.

The Wildkin Pack-it-all Backpack is both kid- and parent-approved after impressing us in the durability and comfort testing categories. While the dinosaur print pattern was a big factor in design ratings, the lightweight material and padded straps also won us over. The adjustable straps were easy to tighten and the backpack remained securely fastened, especially for active kiddos. No worries if the backpack gets dirty, as all you have to do is grab a washcloth and the bag can be spot-cleaned in minutes to look good as new.

In addition, we love that the capacity is big enough to fit a laptop, folders, a lunchbox, and a water bottle without feeling bulky or cumbersome to carry. The smooth zippers open up to reveal a spacious main compartment, but we wish there were a few more pockets besides the front slip pocket and side water bottle holder. With no major drawbacks during testing, we think this Wildkin backpack is plenty versatile for your little one to travel from the classroom to the airport in comfort and style.

Best Overall, Older Kids

The north face vault backpack.

The 27-liter capacity is perfect for storing everyday school supplies without feeling too bulky.

There could be one more zippered pocket for extra organization.

Middle and high schoolers alike will appreciate the sleek and straightforward design of The North Face Vault Backpack. The 27-liter capacity is just the right size for loading up the bag with necessities for school, including a lunchbox, water bottle, binders, and a laptop or tablet, and would offer great space for plane trips, too.

There are two separate compartments for dividing contents with a 15-inch laptop sleeve in the back section and several slip and zippered pockets in the front compartment. One more zippered pocket on the inside of either compartment would have been helpful for extra organization but the backpack still offers a solid amount of storage. When it comes to comfort, the back panel has two strips of thick foam padding in addition to the plush padded shoulder straps that are also adjustable. The bag is the perfect size for swinging it on and off the shoulders and the zippered pockets are easy to access with one hand to conveniently grab a snack or water bottle.

The Details: 27 liters | 1.11 pounds | 18 x 11 x 8.5 inches | 15-inch laptop sleeve

Best Budget

Abshoo classical travel backpack.

  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Design 4 /5
  • Comfort 4 /5

The generous capacity is perfect for packing everything from clothes to snacks.

It feels a bit bulky to wear.

This cost-effective travel backpack wowed us with an impressive capacity for packing kids' essentials. With two large zippered compartments, the bag can stash a lunch box, water bottle, folders, gloves, and a football for school days — all in just one section — so we're certain in-flight essentials will easily fit, too. Although the backpack feels a bit bulky due to its large capacity, the adjustable and padded straps certainly help with customizing the fit of the backpack for extra comfort. After using the backpack in various weather conditions like rain and snow (and the occasional water bottle leak), it looks good as new without any signs of wear.

The Details: 16.5 x 12.2 x 5.3 inches | Ages 3 and up

Best for Air Travel

State bags kane kids backpack.

The dual compartments make it easy to separate and organize items while flying.

It’s best suited for older kids.

When it comes to traveling by airplane, the State Bags Kane Kids Double Pocket Backpack is the best option for kids. The two spacious compartments make it easy to efficiently pack a carry-on backpack with your child since there are designated spots for air travel essentials plus a luggage sleeve on the reverse. The back compartment has a padded laptop or tablet sleeve, so you’ll know exactly where to grab electronics when you pass through TSA security checkpoints. Since both the back and front sections are similar sizes, there’s plenty of space for a blanket, headphones, snacks, and a change of clothes.

After testing the backpack on sunny and rainy days, we were thrilled that the polyester canvas material holds up perfectly against the elements without any color fading or staining. For long travel days, we’re confident this backpack will provide plenty of comfort, as we found the padded and adjustable straps to be snug and secure without feeling constrictive or rough. One thing to note is that the bag is on the bulkier side so it could be too large for smaller kids.

The Details: 16 liters | 14.95 x 11.22 x 7.5 inches | Ages 7 and up

Nike Elemental Kids Backpack

  • Capacity 4.2 /5
  • Design 3.9 /5

The design is simple and ideal for versatility.

The capacity is on the smaller side.

The no-frills design of the Nike Elemental Backpack makes it a versatile backpack for a range of activities. Our middle-school-aged tester used the backpack for trips to school, but they noted after the initial tests that they are looking forward to using it for upcoming hikes, as its lightweight feel is perfect for treks. While the polyester material is noticeably lightweight, the backpack doesn’t feel flimsy or any less supportive. In fact, the padded back panel and straps were a hit with our tester for comfort and stability while running or walking. There aren’t any interior pockets, but we were still able to fit books and a jacket, though the capacity could be a bit bigger if the backpack is being used for school. One of the best parts of the bag is that it’s exceptionally easy to clean with a paper towel to wipe away stains from daily wear and tear.

The Details: 20 liters | 18 x 12 x 5 inches

Best Pattern

Lands end kids classmate small backpack.

The fabric design is colorful and sparkly without getting glitter everywhere.

The straps are slightly difficult to adjust.

Lands’ End is known for boasting unique patterns on clothing and accessories, and the Kids ClassMate Small Backpack is no exception. The sparkly green, purple, and blue paint stripe pattern was an instant eye-catcher and there are plenty more unique colors and patterns to choose from. Besides the colorful design, we love the lightweight polyester material of the backpack and our tester was able to wear it without feeling any discomfort. Parents will appreciate the lighter weight of the backpack since they carry the bag half of the time, too. The only issue you may run into is with adjusting the backpack straps, as it might be slightly difficult for little ones. One of the bag's best features is that the material dries very quickly if it gets wet or caught in the rain, so we think this backpack not only looks stylish, but it’s versatile and functional for traveling year-round.

The Details: 16 x 11.5 x 6 inches

Best Customizable

Light + nine kids starter backpack.

  • Durability 4 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

The exterior polyester has little holes in it for charms and pins.

The holes in the material could make it difficult to clean.

This customizable backpack makes getting ready for school or traveling a little more fun with the option to buy Light + Nine’s Nimix decor sets for adding removable patches like rainbows, animals, and astronauts. The backpack is designed for adding decorations without damaging the exterior fabric thanks to the small silicone holes surrounding the bag. In addition to the customizable features, we appreciate that the lining is easy to wipe down for cleaning, and the backpack can be unzipped to lay flat to clean and dry easier. The backpack and straps feel a little stiff, but the materials loosen up over time so we don't think that's a deal-breaker by any means.

The Details: 1 pound | 11.5 x 14.5 x 4 inches | Ages 3 to 6

Best Wheeled

J world new york sunrise rolling backpack.

It’s easy for small children to wear the backpack or wheel it when it’s packed full.

We wish there were a few more pockets for organization.

Sometimes a backpack can be a little too heavy for a little one, so we’re big fans of the JWorld Sunrise Rolling Backpack. From wheeling the bag to preschool to packing it with snacks and clothes for trips, it's super easy and intuitive to load up and use the bag. The main compartment is simple to unzip with two hands so you can pack it with clothes, a water bottle, a tablet, books, and snacks. While we love the spacious main compartment, we wish there were a few more interior pockets for storing smaller items. While it's important to not back a bag too full for small kids, the option to roll the backpack if it felt too heavy is helpful for days when the bag is on the heavier side. Whether the backpack was wheeled or carried, it proved to be plenty comfortable while on the go and easy to maneuver, which is perfect for a busy airport .

The Details: 4.5 pounds | 34.50 liters | 18 x 13 x 9 inches | Ages 8 and up

Best for Toddlers

Skip hop spark style backpack rocket.

Skip Hop

The generous capacity is ideal for travel necessities for little ones like an extra change of clothes.

The straps are lightly padded and a bit stiff at first.

The rocket ship design of the Skip Hop Spark Style Big Kid Backpack offers a creative backpack that toddlers will surely love. Thanks to the wide opening into the main compartment, it was a breeze to pack toddler travel essentials like a change of clothes, snacks, and a water bottle. The durability of the backpack material made it a winner since all it needs is a quick spot clean to get any dirt or other stains out quickly. While this wasn’t the most comfortable backpack we tested due to the stiff straps and less padding, there wasn’t any noticeable discomfort or pain after wearing the backpack over time.

The Details: 10.5 x 5 x 14 inches | Ages 3 and up

Best for Middle Schoolers

High sierra loop backpack.

  • Durability 4.2 /5

There are lots of pockets and compartments for organizing school supplies.

The capacity could be a bit bigger.

The High Sierra Loop Daypack Backpack offers an impressive amount of comfort and generous capacity for storing school supplies. The three different-sized compartments make it easy to pack items like folders, binders, lunch boxes, headphones, pencil cases, and water bottles with ease. There is an interior media pocket that is ideal for easy access to headphones or a tablet while traveling. We wish the middle compartment was a little bit bigger for a lunch box, as it was a squeeze to get it in with everything else, but the capacity works well for travel and school necessities. The straps are fully padded and, although there isn’t a chest strap, the weight feels evenly distributed when our tester wore the backpack for long periods of time. After wearing the backpack in the rain, we’re happy to report that it kept all of the contents dry, and with lots of use to and from school, it’s still in excellent condition with minimal stains.

The Details: 2.05 pounds | 33 liters | 19 x 13.5 x 8.5 inches

Best Organization

L.l. bean deluxe book pack.

  • Design 4.2 /5

There are plenty of pockets and the capacity is large enough to fit a jacket, books, snacks, and a water bottle.

The chest strap doesn’t get tight enough to fit snugly across the chest.

The L.L.Bean Deluxe Book Pack will keep the contents of the backpack neatly organized thanks to the variety of pockets and pouches for a variety of items. We were able to fit a jacket, a water bottle, a folder, a binder, and several library books between the two main compartments. For smaller items like little toys or cash, we loved the interior zipper and mesh pockets, as well as the small front pocket for easy access to the packed items. In terms of comfort, the plush padded straps were a hit with our tester and although the chest strap was a little big, the backpack stayed in place while running to catch the bus.

The Details: 1.5 pounds | 32 liters | Nylon | Ages 10 and up

Nordace Aerial Infinity Backpack

The USB charging port, RFID-blocking pockets, and comfortable padded straps make this bag ideal for travel.

It cannot be machine-washed due to the built-in smart features.

The Aerial Infinity Backpack from Nordace is packed full of handy features to make traveling a breeze, especially for high school and even college students. For charging a laptop, phone, or tablet, the 3-in-1 USB port can accommodate type-C, lightning, and micro-USB cables so that all of your technology can be fully charged on the go (but a power bank is not included). The 20-liter capacity is large enough for basic school supplies or small travel accessories and the high-quality feel of the water-resistant fabric matches the higher price point.

Lined with a breathable soft padding on the back panel and straps, the backpack is exceptionally comfortable for wearing it for long periods of time without getting sweaty or overheating. Additional features include RFID-blocking credit card slots, a variety of slip pockets on the interior, a water bottle holder, and luggage sleeve. One thing to note is that the backpack can’t be machine-washed but dirt and dust easily comes off with the help of a damp washcloth.

The Details: 20 liters | 2.2 pounds | 18.5 x 11.5 x 6.25  inches | 15-inch laptop sleeve | 3-in-1 USB charging port | RFID-blocking pockets

JanSport Main Campus

The bag lives up the reliable backpack brand’s promise of durability and functionality for all ages.

Some of the pockets and compartments felt excessive.

One of the most recognizable bag brands out there, you simply can’t go wrong with a durable and affordable JanSport backpack. Come rain or shine, the recycled 600-denier polyester protects the contents packed in the bag thanks to the double-layered and water-resistant fabric. There are two main compartments for packing a sweatshirt, binders, books, notebooks, or a lunchbox, and there are pockets upon pockets for organizing smaller school or travel supplies, too. For peace of mind, the laptop sleeve is fully padded to protect your expensive technology while out and about.

Some of the pockets seem unnecessary but for those who like to be extra organized, this backpack is your best bet. The fabric does attract some dirt and dust when it’s on the floor but as soon as you shake off the bag, it looks good as new. Plus, there are 25 colors and patterns to choose from to please any age range.

The Details: 32 liters | 1.55 pounds | 17 x 12.5 x 7 inches | 15-inch laptop sleeve

Best Capacity

Columbia zigzag 30l backpack.

The minimalist design and larger 30-liter capacity makes it easy to pack the bag with a variety of items.

There could be more pockets for smaller items.

For packing sweatshirts, lunchboxes, and any smaller supplies in between, the Columbia Zigzag backpack has an impressive 30-liter capacity. The backpack has two main compartments that are super spacious and help separate bigger items to stay naturally organized when traveling or heading to school. There aren’t many interior pockets but the front of the bag has one medium-size zippered pocket and a water bottle holder on the side for some extra storage. For school-aged kids using laptops or tablets, there is a padded laptop sleeve that can fit a device up to 15 inches long. Both the back panel and shoulder straps have generous padding which helps with comfort but it isn’t the most breathable on warmer days which is something to consider for hot or humid climates. The shoulder straps are very easy to adjust to get the best fit and the water-repellent PU-coated polyester fabric is long-lasting so the backpack can easily be reused year after year.

The Details: 30 liters | 1.3 pounds | 18.1 x 11.8 x 10.6 inches | 15-inch laptop sleeve

Other Kids Backpacks We Tested

There were several backpacks we tested and liked, but didn’t quite make our final list due to a few downsides like slight discomfort, thin materials, and a lack of pockets for organization.

Pottery Barn Kids Glow-in-the-Dark Backpacks : We love the bright patterns and ability to customize the backpack with a monogram, but the fabric feels a little flimsy and less durable than other backpacks we tried.

Simple Modern Disney Kids Backpack : This backpack is comfortable to wear, comes in tons of designs and colors, and spot cleans easily, but we felt that there were other backpacks with more standout features for traveling.

Athleta Girl Limitless Backpack : There are plenty of pockets, padded straps, and a solid capacity, but it wasn’t the most comfortable backpack we tested.

Adidas Prime Backpack : This sporty backpack is made with a durable recycled polyester material that can be spot-cleaned to get rid of dirt or grass marks easily. The capacity is impressive but excessive and there was almost too much room left over, even after the bag was packed with school supplies and sports gear.

lululemon City Adventurer Pack : If you’re looking for a stylish backpack for your teens or tweens, this lululemon bag is a great option but it comes at a higher price point for a fairly simple bag.

Herschel Pop Quiz Backpack : The no-frills backpack has an intuitive design for packing up all of your essentials in an organized manner thanks to the variety of helpful pockets. The backpack is a little large and bulky so it might be too big for smaller kids.

When it comes to testing travel products for kids, we turn to our expert product-testing parents and their children to help us find the best picks on the market for upcoming trips. For this test, the parents provided us with detailed observations and insights about each backpack after their children (ages 3 to 18 years old) used the bags for school, travel, and extracurricular activities.

Paying close attention to capacity, design, durability, and comfort, we rated 38 backpacks on a scale of one to five in each category. We packed the bags full of everyday essentials like snacks, extra clothing, water bottles, and books, and then the kids used the bag for school or other activities. In the end, the best backpacks we tried had plenty of room without feeling bulky, plus padding and adjustable straps for comfort. We loved the backpacks with a variety of pockets for staying organized while traveling and found the most durable backpacks were easy to spot clean after getting dirty and looked good as new even with prolonged use.

Tips for Buying a Kids Backpack

Look at backpack size and weight.

When it comes to purchasing a comfortable backpack for your youngster, it's helpful to look at the capacity, weight, and materials of the bag to get a better idea of the size. Usually, there will be product specifications that also list the intended age range for the backpack, so you can factor in the most important features of the backpack to select the best one for your child.

Consider wheels versus straps

Traveling with a backpack with just shoulder straps is the most common route to go, but backpacks with wheels can be ideal when the bag gets too heavy to be carried comfortably. However, it can be slightly difficult to maneuver a rolled backpack so you may want to look for a wheeled backpack that also has straps for extra versatility.

Factor in the intended use

Whether you’re looking for a backpack for school, travel, or both, you’ll want to consider the main use of the backpack to choose the best one for your child. For example, a larger backpack might be better for school, because it can accommodate a tablet and a lunch box , for example, but it could be cumbersome to carry around for long trips. Opting for a lightweight backpack with less space or pockets might be better for a little one carrying a bag through an airport.

In general, anyone with a ticket for a flight will be able to have a personal item like a small backpack. Packing travel necessities in your child’s backpack is a great way to utilize the amount of bags you’re allowed to bring onto the plane. However, you’ll want to double-check any airline restrictions if you’ve booked a fare with no allotted carry-on bags .

We always recommend looking at the manufacturer’s guidelines for washing a backpack, but if directions are unavailable, you should be able to spot clean the fabric with soapy water and a towel.

11 Best Travel Bags for Children (+ Kids Luggage Tips)

Are you looking for a travel bag for your children and wondering which one to get? Or maybe you are wondering if it’s even worth getting a separate travel bag for kids? This article should answer your questions.

When it comes to traveling with kids , a little organization goes a long way! Something that we’ve found key to a smooth journey is packing carefully and making sure that we have easy access to things we need when we need them. The best way to achieve this is by having a dedicated luggage space for everyone’s belongings.

If you have no luggage restrictions, then it’s often really handy to allow your kids to have their own travel bags.

One thing you should keep in mind, however, is that every trip is different and so your kids’ luggage needs might be very different as well, depending on your family vacation destination . You won’t pack the same way when you are going for a short weekend getaway by plane compared to a long road trip with your own car…

So while sometimes it’s extremely convenient to have separate travel bags for kids, there might be trips where you better do without them (especially if you are traveling with more than one child).

To help you decide, we listed some of the advantages of kids having their own travel bag . See further below.

Also, there are dozens of kids travel bags on the market right now. So it is not always easy to choose the right travel bag for your children. Further below you can find some tips on what to look for in good travel luggage and how to choose the best travel bag for kids .

And finally, you will find our hand-picked selection of some of the best kids’ travel luggage available with a list of the features they offer. Hopefully, this will help you find just the right thing to make your family travel easier. Find out!

Kids Luggage – OVERVIEW

  • Should you get a travel bag for your child and why?
  • What to look for in a good kids travel bag
  • Our selection of the best travel bags for kids of all ages

Advantages of Kids Having Their Own Travel Bags

As already mentioned, there might be situations when you don’t want to carry any extra bags on your family trip. However, there are many advantages of each child having their own travel bag. Take a look!

Better Organization

If you have several family members traveling together, packing everyone’s things individually is a real time-saver. Rather than trying to separate a large mixed bag of toys and clothes on arrival at your destination, everyone will have their own items at hand, making it quick and easy to unpack.

The same applies to hand luggage for your journey. Having each child carry their own toys, snacks, and precious items keeps your own bag clear. This also makes it easier for everyone to locate exactly what they need.

TIP: We always try to pack a spare set of clothes in each child’s travel bag. Accidents happen and it’s reassuring to know that you can easily access a change of clothing in an emergency! If you travel with several kids of similar ages and your luggage space is limited, you can also just pack one set of emergency clothes in the carry on luggage.

TIP: If you don’t want to take a separate travel bag for each child, give them each a packing cube (or two). That way, they can still have their own travel ‘bag’ to pack something that they really want to take with them.

Excitement!

Getting your children involved in the packing really helps add to their excitement as your trip draws closer. Furthermore, having your kids help you pack, teaches them some organizational skills.

Sense of Responsibility

Kids respond so well to independence and by providing them with their own travel bags, you are giving them a real sense of responsibility during their journey. It’s also helpful for them to realize at the packing stage that they can’t take ALL their toys with them and that choices have to be made!

When our kids were younger, they would usually get a set number of toys they could bring with them (usually not more than 2-3 if we traveled by plane and a few more if we travelled by car). As hard as it looks, it really helps you travel light. In addition, it teaches your kids to make choices. More often than not, kids don’t play with the toys they pack from home anyway. Playing with shells and stones on a beach is much more exciting than anything they could have packed from home.

What to Look for in a Good Travel Bag for Kids

If you think that it’s the right time for your kids to have their own travel bags, here are a few tips on what to look for when choosing the right luggage for your kids.

How durable a bag needs to be, depends largely on the type of traveling you’ll be doing. If the bag is only needed for shorter, local journeys, then you will be able to get away with something lightweight and less robust. But for other types of journeys – particularly air travel – it makes sense to have a sturdy bag. You need something that can withstand the trials and tribulations of long-haul travel, especially if you are planning to check it in.

Hardshell or Softshell?

There are pros and cons to both types of luggage.

Hardshell bags offer the most protection for fragile items and they are better at protecting their contents from the weather. This is especially important if you plan to check the bag for flying and there’s a chance it might be sitting on the runway in the pouring rain!

Hardshell bags, however, are more prone to scratches and cosmetic damage and are much less flexible in terms of how much you can pack.

You can certainly cram a lot more into a soft bag and they often have lots of extra little pockets and compartments, which make it easy for your kids to separate their toys, snacks etc. They are often more lightweight too.

TIP: The fact that you can get a lot more into a softshell bag makes it easy to overstuff it! If you are planning to take it on a plane as hand luggage, make sure that it meets the airline requirements.

The zipper is often the weak point in any luggage and can be the first thing to break. It can be pretty devastating in the middle of a packed airport! Look for strong zippers that are easy for little hands to manage, and sturdy seams that are less likely to bust.

Weight and Design

You need to make sure that your child can manage the weight of the travel bag you buy, and that you will be able to manage it in addition to your own bags if they ask for your help. And they certainly will! You should always anticipate that young children will tire of carrying their own bags and you will be the one who ends up carrying it.

Backpack or Suitcase?

Kids travel backpacks are a good choice for shorter trips, for carry-on, or when the luggage isn’t too heavy. The weight is divided by the straps which make them easier for children to carry. Just make sure to look for wider straps for ultimate comfort.

Another bonus with backpacks is that they tend to include lots of compartments, helping to keep items better organized.

Trolley-type bags and kids suitcases with wheels are great for longer journeys, or when the luggage is heavier. If your child has smaller items to organize, look for a wheeled bag that includes additional pockets or get them a couple of packing cubes .

Make sure that the wheels roll smoothly and that the suitcase won’t easily tip over, which children can find very frustrating.

Depending on the trip or your child’s age, you may want to consider a hybrid design, which offers the option of a backpack and a wheeled bag. This gives the best of both worlds, allowing your child to go from one mode to another when they get tired.

A Bag That Will Grow With Your Child

If you only travel now and then, you really want to look for a bag that will give you several years of service. This means that you need to give careful thought to the design of the bag you choose. It needs to be large enough for both a younger child and an older child to use, both in terms of capacity and height.

In this case, you may also like to avoid cartoon designs or certain colors. While your child may love a certain TV character now, it could be a very different story even a year from now!

However, if your child will be using their travel bag on a regular basis, then its life may be fairly limited anyway. In this case, I would let your kids choose the bag they like the most, even though it has pink unicorns or colorful cars all over it. The more they like the bag, the more likely it is that they will carry it themselves the whole time.

TIP: Choose a bag that the kids could also use at home – for sleepovers, school trips, extracurricular activities, and similar. That way, you don’t waste money on a travel bag that will only be used once.

Some kids’ travel bags offer extended warranties, although it’s important to note that these only usually cover manufacturing faults rather than wear and tear, accidental rips, etc.

Also, if you are getting a travel bag for a really young child, chances are that it will not be used for long anyway. So I wouldn’t necessarily let my choice for kids luggage depend on the warranty duration.

All the kids travel bags listed here are really good and they all have something unique. There is no one perfect choice for everyone, but I hope that this list will help you find the right bag for your child. Find out!

1. Skip Hop Kids Luggage with Wheels

One of the cutest travel bags for kids on the market, Skip Hop Kids Luggage will best suit the youngest members of the family . It has been a favorite of many traveling families for years. In fact, we already featured this travel bag in our selection of the best kids travel gear . I know several families who use these bags for all their kids and all their trips.

The Skip Hop kids luggage is not only fun to look at, but it’s also really well made and easy to use.

Available in different animal designs, this kids’ travel bag is sturdy and durable. We love the cute, matching zipper pulls and the handy write-on name tag, which is useful if your child takes the bag to daycare.

Deceptively spacious, the bag will hold up to a week’s clothing for younger children. The only disadvantage is that the retractable handle can’t be set to different heights, so it can be difficult for younger children to pull comfortably.

  • Suitable for youngest kids – from toddlers to preschoolers.
  • Dimensions: 7″ x 12.5″ x 18″.
  • Easy to clean.
  • Elastic mesh bottle pocket.
  • Back loop to keep shoulder strap tucked away.

TIP: Skip Hop has a big selection of matching items, such as toddler backpacks , lunch boxes , or reusable water bottles , so you can get the whole set of accessories for your kids.

2. American Tourister Kids’ Softside Suitcases

There are a variety of American Tourister softside bags to choose from. The kids’ models often feature Disney characters and there are also really nice designs that would appeal to teenagers as well.

The front is made of vinyl, which is flexible enough to allow you to squeeze in those extra items, and there’s a large mesh pocket on the interior panel.

These bags tick lots of boxes – they are durable, lightweight and easy to roll, with an easy-pull handle that makes them perfect for little hands. The 18″ models are fairly small in size, so we recommend using them for younger children only. For older kids and teens, we recommend 21-28″ luggage.

  • Suitable for kids of all ages, starting with 18″ bags that will suit kids from about 3 years old.
  • Wide range of designs and sizes available.
  • Easy-to-roll in-line skate wheels.
  • 10-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.

3. American Tourister Hardside 18″

There are lots of different vibrant Disney designs to choose from in American Tourister’s hardshell range , which offers that extra layer of protection for your child’s belongings.

The 18″ kids hardshell suitcases feature a very useful zip-around mesh divider which effectively creates an extra compartment. The zippered side is really useful for storing socks and undies.

The wheels move smoothly and quietly and the bag rolls along upright, so it’s very easy to manage, also for young kids (age 3 and up). The handle is comfortable for little hands and slides up and down easily.

  • Suitable for kids from about 3 years old.
  • Dimensions 18.0″ x 13.0″ x 8.0″.
  • Mesh divider to create a separate compartment inside the suitcase.
  • Cute Disney zipper pulls.

TIP: There are also similar models for somewhat older children and teens – take a look at the bigger sizes here .

4. Trunki Original

The durable Trunki is the original ride-on suitcase for kids and is a great way to keep little ones occupied when they are waiting around en route. It can also be used as a seat when the kids are tired of standing.

It has horn grips for steering and a comfy saddle, but there is also a shoulder strap that doubles up as a tow leash. This means you can easily pull your little one along if he’s simply too weary to ride!

The perfect size to use as carry-on luggage, the Trunki has a capacity of nearly 15 gallons, with an internal pocket and elastic straps to keep everything in place. There’s also a lock, so you don’t have to worry about it coming open as your child moves it along.

One disadvantage is that the wheels of the Trunki are designed to allow it to move in a straight line only. This means it has a tendency to tip over fairly easily on corners, which can be annoying when it happens repeatedly!

Nevertheless, this is still a great travel bag for kids. It provides some entertainment and might help you survive airport madness without losing your mind! Just make sure to make clear arrangements with your kids, so that they don’t get too wild on their little wheels, because other passengers might not appreciate that.

  • Suitable for children age 3+.
  • 5-year warranty.
  • Ride-along, tow-along, carry-on.
  • Dimensions 17.5″ x 8″ x 12.2″.
  • Can be locked.

5. Kids Hardside Carry on Luggage Sets with Wheels

There are so many really nice luggage sets for little kids . The iPlay iLearn luggage sets offer a nice cuteness/quality ratio. They come in a range of different fun designs.

These kids luggage sets are constructed from tough, durable polycarbonate material, offering great protection for delicate items and that all-important weather-proofing!

Despite being tough, these bags are lightweight and easy for kids to manage, with multi-directional wheels that make it easy to roll them along. The telescopic handle is comfortable for little hands, with smooth and sturdy grippers.

The backpack has nice wide, adjustable straps so it’s comfortable to wear, while the case has pockets inside (a nice touch, since some hardshell suitcases don’t offer this feature).

TIP: The backpack would work well as a school backpack too, making the most of your investment.

  • Best suitable for little kids.
  • Made of durable Polycarbonate, ABS and Nylon.
  • Lightweight.
  • Sturdy, 2-way zippers.

6. Jack Wolfskin Explorer Backpacks

If you are looking for a comfortable travel backpack for kids, take a look at the Jack Wolfskin Explorer series . These backpacks are very light and extremely comfortable to wear for a longer time. These backpacks exist in various sizes; for preschoolers as well as for kids from about 6 years old.

Two of our kids have these backpacks (20l) and they use them on many trips and also at home, for music school or school field trips. If we plan a vacation that involves lots of hiking, we always pack these backpacks and the kids can carry them without any problems for longer hikes of 4-6 hours.

These backpacks are really well-made and have no zippers. I was a bit skeptical about that at first, but kids love them and don’t mind the closing mechanism at all. In fact, I think that any backpack with a zipper would have been broken long ago, while these bags have been used for over 3 years and they still look as good as new.

  • The smaller backpacks are suitable for kids up to 3-5 years old, and the bigger ones – from about 5-6 years. Our twins used their 20l backpacks from about the age of 7 to 12.
  • Lightweight and very comfortable to carry for longer periods of time.
  • Durable quality materials.

7. Mountaintop Kids Backpacks

Mountaintop kids backpacks come in several sizes – from toddlers to school-going kids. These backpacks are great for all types of travel because they are light, versatile, and you can use them for so many purposes.

These backpacks have comfortable wide adjustable straps so they can be worn for longer periods of time. They can be easily used as a lightweight kids’ carry-on bag, but are also suitable for short hikes and other activities. In addition, they can be used for (pre)school and school trips too.

So if you don’t need a big travel bag for your child, this backpack might be a much better investment. Most designs are timeless, so these backpacks can easily be used for several years.

  • The toddler bags are suitable for kids up to 3-5 years old, whereas the bigger models will suit kids from about 4 to 10 years old.
  • Timeless designs.
  • Water-resistant quality materials.

8. Stephen Joseph Rolling Luggage

The Stephen Joseph Luggage Range includes lots of brightly colored designs for younger children, but the brand makes lots of other items for kids too, including umbrellas, rain boots, totes and more. If your child likes matching items, then a Stephen Joseph Luggage Set makes a great coordinated accessory.

Kids will love the multiple outside compartments on these bags, which are great for organization, but not always found in other models of kids travel bags. That extra bit of space is very useful and you can fit around a week’s clothing for a younger child into this bag.

The case rolls easily and can be easily used as kids carry on luggage. Our only cautionary note is that these children’s bags aren’t quite as sturdy as the others in this review.

TIP: Some parents find that the area at the top of the front pocket is ideal for adding your child’s name!

  • Dimensions: 14.5″x 18″x 6.5″.
  • Coordinates with a wide range of Stephen Joseph Accessories .
  • Multiple outside compartments for better organization.

9. Yodo Zoo Toddler Backpack with Wheels

Yodo Zoo 3-Way Kids Rolling Luggage is a toddler backpack with wheels. These cute sturdy bags are great travel bags for toddlers and younger kids. They can be used as a hand-held bag, a backpack or a rolling case.

Smaller in size and more suited for day or weekend trips, these bags come with a zip pocket on the inside and mesh pockets for drinks.

If your child becomes tired of carrying the bag as a backpack, he can secure the straps out of sight with Velcro and use it as a roll-along bag. And when he wants to use it as a backpack again, he can use the built-in covers to hide the wheels.

The bags come in small and medium sizes, although it’s worth noting that there is no name tag or inner pocket in the small versions. The only thing to take into account is that the backpack might be a bit too big for very young children.

TIP: Make sure that your child has removed the wheel covers before he starts rolling this bag along. It’s very easy to forget, but then there’s the risk of the covers becoming damaged or dirty after being in contact with the ground.

  • Dimensions: 11.8″ x 6.1″ x 15″.
  • Can be used as a hand-held bag, backpack, or rolling bag.
  • Easy-to-use zippers.
  • Adjustable handle height (meaning that it’s not too uncomfortable for you to pull the bag if needed).

10. ZOMAKE Ultra Lightweight Packable Backpack

This ultra-light packable backpack might be just the perfect solution if you don’t want to invest in a real travel bag for your kids or aren’t sure if and how often it will be used. It folds so small that you can always take it with you even if you are traveling extremely light.

These backpacks come in many different sizes and are actually meant for adults, but the smallest 20l backpack could be perfect for kids from about 10 years old as well.

This backpack is so light and versatile and offers great value for your money. Chances are big that you’ll end up buying one of these for each member of the family. This is a perfect travel backpack that you can always take with you. It will be used time and again.

  • Weight 0,5 LB (0,22kg).
  • Water-resistant.
  • Wide, breathable mesh shoulder straps.

11. Trunki BoostApak

No list of kids travel gear on my blog would be complete without mentioning our favorite travel bag that our kids have used for years – Trunki BoostApak .

The backpack makes a perfect kids carry-on luggage. Its 8-liter capacity is usually more than enough for everything that our kids want to pack on the plane .

We just love the versatility of this backpack, which doubles up as a booster seat. You can read more about it on our review of the best booster seats for travel .

Good to know: There is just one disadvantage – the booster seat is only approved in the EU, so you cannot buy Trunki BoostApak in the United States.

  • Suitable for children age 4-11 years, weighing from 15-36kg.
  • Approved as hand luggage by most airlines.
  • Converts from a backpack to a booster seat in seconds.
  • The fold-out seatbelt guides and seat belt adjuster help you ensure a perfect – and safe – fit.
  • EU-certified for everyday car use.

What kind of suitcase is the child pulling in the main picture? The red case with 2 wheels? Finding it so hard to find cabin cases with 2 wheels these days and I love this one in the picture - just not sure where to get it from.

Thursday 1st of December 2022

Hi Alan, luggage collections change all the time and you just have to see online or in the shops what you can find. There are still cabin bags with two wheels, you just need to look a bit deeper. But indeed, nowadays, most luggage is with 4 wheels (and it has lots of advantages too). Anyway, here is a nice 2-wheel cabin bag for adults. And here is a hardshell 2-wheel bag for kids. Hope this helps.

What kind of backpacks are the kids wearing in the train station picture? Thanks

Hi Riley, the green and the blue backpacks are Jack Wolfskin Kids Explorer 20l. They also have them in 16l size for younger kids. If your child is older than 6, definitely go with the bigger one. The black one our oldest son has is a limited edition from Salewa that I don't see anywhere. I think they only made it for promotional purposes - we got this one at a local tourism board in Italy. This model is the closest to the one we have, but they are quite big for younger kids. PS The Jack Wolfskin backpacks that our twins have are really good quality. When we are not traveling, kids use them for music school. We have them for over 3 years now and they are still in perfect condition. Hope this helps!

Tuesday 28th of January 2020

Hi Jurga, I just can't decide between a ride-on suitcase or a 'regular' kids suitcase (and soft or hard) for my 4-year old. We are flying to the Dominican Republic and she would take it as hand luggage on the plane. What do you suggest?

Hi Liv, it's really hard for me to say - it's such a personal choice. Why don't you just ask your daughter which one she'd prefer? :) If it was me, I'd probably go with a little suitcase with wheels for a girl that age (like this 18" soft-sided suitcase or this 18" hard-side suitcase). It's not too big for a little girl to pull and she'll probably be able to use it for several trips for at least 3-4 years. The only problem here might be the design - so make sure it's somewhat timeless and one she really loves. Whereas if you buy a ride-on suitcase, it's likely that it will be fun now and maybe next year, but not much longer. It's great for kids age 3-5 who travel more often because they'll use it a lot at the age when it's really fun, but if you just go on one trip a year and she's already 4, it's quite likely it won't be as interesting to her next year anymore... Hope this helps a bit. Enjoy your trip!

Let your young adventurer enjoy their own independence on the road with their very own child-size backpack. Made from strong and durable materials, these travel bags may be smaller in size, but they offer all the convenience and practicality of your favorite full-size adult version.

Packed full of useful pockets and compartments, your child will love having their very own backpack for school, sleepovers, and trips away.

Things To Consider With Travel Backpacks for Kids

There are lots of great travel backpacks for kids out there, but consider some of these factors before you buy:

Kids backpack

Depending on the age of your child, the size of the backpack they need will vary. In order to be comfortable and prevent pressure on the shoulders, any backpack should be proportionate to the size of the child.

The height should extend from around 2 inches below the shoulder blades , and the bottom of the backpack should sit nicely just above the waist. It goes without saying that the smaller the child, the more compact the backpack should be, and under no circumstances should a toddler be hauling around an adult-size backpack on their travels.

The capacity will also vary, with younger children not being expected to carry as much stuff as older children. Whatever the age and size of your child, it is important to remember that the backpack you choose will need to be fit for purpose.

For older children, look for backpacks that can comfortably carry folders with additional space for textbooks, notepads, and even extra clothing. For younger children, smaller compartments for drinks and snacks are a must!

Little people won’t want to be weighed down with heavy backpacks. If you want to avoid your preschooler tipping backward with a super-heavy hiking pack, look for the lightest backpacks you can buy.

Lightweight doesn’t need to mean flimsy, though, and modern-day backpacks are made from durable materials with feature-reinforced seams to ensure that they can withstand regular use without falling apart.

Most backpacks designed for use at school or travel tend to weigh around 6 to 12 pounds when empty , and even less for those designed for children under 4. While doctors and physical therapists recommend that kids carry no more than 10% to 15% of their body weight on their backs, heavy bags can sometimes not be avoided.

Bottom Line: As a general rule, look for the most durable but lightweight backpack you can find to ensure that your child doesn’t suffer back or shoulder pain.

Kids Backpack Carry Options

Kids love backpacks, and parents love them, too. One of the biggest benefits of using a backpack is the ability to wear it over the shoulders to help distribute the weight evenly across the body. Backpacks also allow for hands-free travel, making it easy for your child to hold your hand, ride their bike, or generally just enjoy a higher level of dexterity as they go about their day.

Shoulder straps should be adjustable and padded to ensure that they fit well and don’t dig in , and while a backpack wouldn’t be a backpack without them, there are other carry options available, too.

You might notice that your kid’s backpack comes with a grab handle on the top. While probably not suitable for 1-handed carrying over longer periods, these are useful for grabbing the pack from the trunk of your car and can be used to hang it on a peg or in a locker.

For larger backpacks that might be used for sporting events, sleepovers, or on vacation, you could consider one that offers the addition of smooth-rolling wheels and a retractable handle. Easy to maneuver, these may not be what your child wants to pull along the school hallways, but they are a practical alternative for oversize bags and heavier loads when traveling.

Lots of kid’s backpacks describe themselves as being waterproof and weatherproof, but exactly how much protection do they really offer?

The answer is pretty simple — waterproof bags can withstand being fully submerged in the water without getting the contents wet, while water-resistant bags are usually coated to allow light rain, drizzle, and moisture to run off of the bag and away from your belongings.

That said, “water-resistant” can be a fairly broad term, with some makes and models offering far higher levels of protection than others. The zippers on the backpack also play an important part in keeping your gear nice and dry. Zippers are full of holes that can easily allow the driving rain to seep in by their very nature.

Hot Tip: Look for backpacks that come with coated or covered zippers to improve the amount of protection they offer against rain.

Kids backpack Material

Your child’s backpack should be able to withstand the rigors of daily use. Being thrown around by older children is par for the course, and younger children probably won’t treat it with too much care, either.

Durable materials such as polyester or nylon will help extend the bag’s life span , and reinforced seams can cope better with heavy loads. Over time, rips, tears, and broken zippers can make any backpack unusable, so for regular use or frequent travel, opt for a backpack that is more about function than fashion.

Easy-to-clean materials are also a must. While some can be wiped down with a damp cloth, others can simply be chucked in the washing machine to remove any evidence of unwanted stains or spillages.

Your child’s backpack needs to be comfortable to carry even when full. A good backpack sits comfortably against the curve of the back and hangs nicely from the shoulders, but other factors will enhance the comfort levels significantly.

The straps should be easy to adjust to ensure that they can be made to fit. They should also be padded to prevent them from digging into the shoulders as your child walks. Larger backpacks often come with additional chest straps that help distribute the weight more evenly and are also useful if your child is planning to undertake outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, or running.

Some backpacks come with mesh material on the straps and the back panel . The nature of the fabric helps to hold the backpack away from your shoulders and back to allow air to pass through to keep that cool feeling.

Hot Tip: If your child’s backpack seems to be causing them discomfort, it could simply be that it is too full, badly loaded, or just not the right size or fit for them.

Children of different ages will be naturally drawn to different colors and designs. Younger children love carrying their favorite cartoon character or toy on their back, and with so many to choose from, they shouldn’t be disappointed. On the other hand, older children often prefer more fashionable designs that help them stand out from the crowd.

Plain-colored backpacks are practical and easy to keep clean , and some children may find that their school insists on a certain color as part of their uniform.

On the other hand, character backpacks or those that are designed to look like your little one’s favorite animal or toy will be much more visually attractive to younger children, and they will love to show off their new best bag friend to everyone they meet.

Whatever color or design your child goes for, remember that it needs to be practical enough to withstand the dirt and dust of regular usage.

The Ultimate List of Toddler Travel Essentials (+Toddler Packing List!)

This page may contain affiliate links, which means that we may earn from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you.

Traveling with a toddler is not the easiest of feats, but it can be made a lot easier by bringing a few toddler travel essentials. These are items that make traveling with a toddler go much more smoothly for everyone in your travel group.

On our many trips with our toddlers, we’ve come to learn that there are some items that we just can’t do without when traveling with young kids. And others that we can ditch to save the luggage space…

In this article, we’ve included detailed descriptions of the toddler travel essentials that you won’t want to forget on your trip. We’ve also provided a toddler travel packing list to make packing for your child that much easier! Read on for everything you need to bring for a successful trip with a toddler.

If you’re planning on visiting the beach, check out our article on the beach essential for toddlers .

Toddler Travel Essentials

Getting around

These are a few essential items that make getting around with your toddler a lot easier during travel.

Toddler in an Ergobaby Omni 360 Carrier

  • Toddler carrier

When traveling with a toddler, a carrier is at the top of my list of toddler travel essentials.

Toddler carriers can make life so much easier when traveling. They allow you to easily take your child places that are less stroller friendly and provide a perfect place for nursing (if your child is breastfeeding) and napping on the go. They’re also great for containing toddlers in places that might not be safe for them to roam free (say at the top of a bell tower or the edge of the grand canyon).

We’ve carried our toddlers in carriers all over the world and find it to be one of the easiest ways to travel with a toddler.

To find the best carrier for your child, see this article on the best toddler carriers for travel .

A stroller may or may not be a necessity for your trip, depending on what kind of trip you’re taking. We’ve taken trips with just a toddler carrier and others with both a carrier and a stroller (I always bring a carrier, even if I’m bringing a stroller).

Strollers can be very useful for navigating the airport with a toddler and for trips where you’ll be visiting stroller-accessible locations. They’re nice to have along to give you a break from having to carry your child all the time (or chase them down constantly).

We love our gb Pockit for travel. It’s the most compact strollers out there and folds down small enough to fit into the overhead bit or under your seat on the airplane. Be sure to see our full gb Pockit stroller review .

Travel car seat

A car seat is typically going to be one of your toddler travel essentials, barring a few locations where you can get by just using public transportation. But if you’re planning on getting around by car, you’ll want a car seat to keep your little one safe. Strapped in their car seat is also the safest way for toddlers to fly on a plane.

Younger toddlers might still fit within the safety requirements for an infant car seat, which are great for travel. Infant car seats are lightweight and easy to transport.

If your child has outgrown their infant seat, it’s worth it to invest in a lightweight travel car seat. Trust me, after you’ve spent your whole trip hauling that thing around you’ll be glad to have left your heavy, bulky regular seat at home. Our favorite travel car seat for toddlers is the Cosco Scenera next.

Car seat bag

If you’re bringing a car seat, you’ll want to bring a car seat travel bag. These bags make transporting your car seat much easier and more manageable.

There are a lot of different options out there so check out our review of the best car seat travel bags to find the best one for your trip.

Food/Snacks

These food relate toddler travel essentials will make mealtimes and snacks with your toddler go a lot more smoothly while on your trip.

A bib is a helpful way to keep your child cleaner while eating. As an added bonus, it keeps their clothes clean as well, which makes it more likely that you can pack light and reuse outfits.

These waterproof bibs are lightweight and pack down to practically nothing. We also love these silicone bibs which take a bit more space but are easier to clean and dry more quickly.

Snack catcher

Snacks are a great way to entertain a toddler while traveling. And a snack catcher allows them to feed themselves independently without making a huge mess. This can be a helpful tool for distracting and redirecting a child who is getting bored or on the verge of a meltdown.

Our favorite snack catcher for travel folds down compactly, making it easy to store when not in use. The material it’s made out of does tend to collect lint and crumbs, so I recommend bringing a baggie to store it in when you’re not using it.

  • Travel high chair

A travel high chair can be a useful item for traveling with a toddler. It ensures that your child always has their own seat at the table and helps keep them contained so that they’re not climbing all over you or running around. This can make for a much more relaxing meal for yourself and your toddler.

Travel high chairs are not always necessary if you’re going someplace where you know high chairs will be available. However if there aren’t high chairs, or if you’re not sure if there will be, bringing your own can be a nice way to ensure that mealtimes go smoothly.

  • Water bottle

You’ll want to make sure your child is drinking a lot while traveling, so be sure to bring a water bottle and offer it to them frequently throughout the day.

We prefer the straw kind because they are easier for our toddler to use and less likely to spill.

  • Disposable place mats

Feeding a toddler when you’re eating out can be tricky. The places you eat might not have toddler-safe dishes andd it can be a pain to have to feed your toddler bite by bite (plus in my experience toddlers often insist on feeding themselves!).

That’s where these disposable place mats come in so handy. They have adhesive on all four sides to secure it to the table, providing a clean and stable surface for your toddler to eat on. Once they’re done eating, you can easily pull the place mat off of the table and throw it away. This helps to minimize mess and allows your child to have an independent eating experience without you having to stress about them breaking the dishes.

Sleep Items

Toddler sleeping in a Kidco Peapod

Some of the most important toddler travel essentials are those related to sleep. Whether or not your toddler sleeps well can make a huge difference to the success of your trip. A tired and grumpy toddler makes for a very long day while traveling.

These sleep items are ones that can be hugely helpful in getting your toddler the sleep that they need. For everyone’s sake!

  • White noise

We always bring white noise for our children while traveling. It helps block any ambient sounds that they might not be used to and also means that we don’t have to be quite so quiet as we’re moving around our hotel room or Airbnb.

Oftentimes we’ll just use a white noise app on our phone, but if you want to be able to use your phone for other things, you can bring a travel white noise machine .

While you’re away from home, you’ll want to make sure your toddler has a cozy and comfortable place to sleep. There are a couple of different ways you can do this.

First, if your child sleeps in a crib you can see if your accommodations have a crib or pack ‘n play available for you to use while you’re there.

If you have a bed for your toddler, consider getting portable bed rails to keep your child from rolling off the bed in the night. These bed rails are placed underneath the bottom sheet to form a barrier at the edge of the bed. They provide a lot of peace of mind for when your toddler is sleeping in a full-sized bed. We’ve compiled a list of the best portable bed rails for travel with a toddlers to help you out.

You can also choose to bring a portable toddler bed for your child so you can set up a cozy spot for them to sleep wherever you are. These can come in several different forms, from toddler cots to inflatable beds to pop-up tents. You can see our reviews of the best options for portable toddler beds if you need help picking a good one.

Whichever option you pick, make sure that your child knows what to expect and do your best to make sure it feels as safe and familiar as possible.

Favorite stuffed animal

If your child has a special stuffed animal or blanket, make sure to bring it along to help them feel comfortable and safe during their sleep time.

You could also bring along a favorite story or two as part of their bedtime routine. The key is to help it feel as much like the environment they’re used to as possible.

A monitor may or may not be necessary, depending on your accommodations. If you’re all sleeping in the same room this may not be helpful as you’ll be able to easily hear if your child needs you.

However, if you have a suite, an apartment, or a balcony, a monitor can give you a lot of peace of mind knowing that you can keep a close eye on your baby while in an unfamiliar place.

You can see our recommendations for the best portable baby monitors to help your decision.

Blackout options

Toddler sleeping in a SlumberPod

For many young children, keeping a dark sleep environment is necessary for a good night’s sleep. This can be especially true if you’re changing time zones and trying to adjust their sleep schedule.

Many hotels will have blackout curtains in their rooms, however rentals or Airbnb’s often do not. We had a couple of really bad experiences with our children waking up extremely early in a new place due to light and since then I always bring a black out option for our toddlers.

One way to create a dark environment is to bring travel blackout curtains . These curtains have suction cups that you can use to attach them to the window, darkening the whole room for sleep.

Another great sleep aid is a SlumberPod (see our full SlumberPod review ) or SlumberPod alternative to create a dark sleep environment for your child. These products go around your child’s bed to block out light to help them sleep better and longer. The nice thing about this option is that it creates a private sleep area for you child, meaning you don’t have to be quite so quiet and careful about light if you’re sharing a room with your child.

  • Toddler airplane bed

If you’re flying with your toddler, another helpful sleep tool is a toddler airplane bed. These are products that can be used to extend the length of the seat and provide a comfortable place for your toddler to sleep on the plane. These can make a huge difference for international or long-haul flights where you’re traveling through your child’s normal bedtime.

There are few different kinds of airplane beds, and you can learn about the best options in our article on the best airplane beds for toddlers .

Toddler smelling flowers- toddler travel essentials

When you’re traveling with a toddler, there are a few health items that you want to make sure to always have on hand.

Medications

If your child has any medications, be sure to bring enough for your trip plus a bit extra to account for unexpected delays.

Also remember to pack your child’s medication in your carryon luggage so that you aren’t caught without it in case anything happens to your checked luggage.

  • Thermometer

Traveling with a thermometer ensures that you can monitor a fever if your child happens to get sick. I never travel without one and have actually had to use it a surprising number of times while on trips. It provides a little extra peace of mind knowing that you have a way to assess the severity of a sickness.

You never know when a child might get sick and bringing along some pain medication can make any unexpected sickness a lot less miserable for your child. This is another one I’ve had to use several times when traveling and I’m always so glad that I have it on hand.

Hand sanitizer/sanitizing wipes

Traveling with kids means exposing them to lots of germs, which can often lead to them getting sick. And toddlers are the worst at this, as they tend to touch everything and then stick their hands in their mouths. Bring along hand sanitizer so that you can sanitize their hands frequently, especially before they eat.

Sanitizing wipes are also very helpful for wiping down surfaces such as the tray tables and arm rests on the airplane and tables at restaurants.

No one wants a sick kid, especially when you’re far from home. While you can’t always prevent sickness, sanitizing often definitely increases your chances of keeping everyone healthy.

Toddler travel essential basics

Toddler playing with truck toys on the plane

Having awesome travel activities is an absolute necessity when traveling with a toddler. That doesn’t mean that you need a lot of activities, but you do want a few great options that can capture your child’s attention and that they will return to over and over.

Over our years of traveling with toddlers we’ve found some great activities that our toddlers always love. You can get some ideas from our list of our favorite toddler activities for planes and our favorite toddler activities for road trips .

Consider not only activities for the flight or drive, but also for your hotel room and when you’re out and about.

When you’re traveling with a toddler, you’ll want a great diaper bag to carry all of your essential items. I highly recommend a backpack diaper bag for travel. They are typically much more comfortable, secure against theft, and easier to carry over long periods of time.

Diapers and wipes

If your toddler isn’t potty trained, don’t forget to bring along diapers and wipes. You can choose to bring along enough for your whole trip or, if you want to pack lighter, you can pack enough for the first few days and plan on picking some up at your destination (make sure it’s a place where they’re easy to find).

When possible, I try to just bring along all the diapers and wipes I will need for my trip to save myself the hassle of needing to pick some up during the trip. However, I know people who would prefer to pack less up front, so do what makes the most sense to you.

Be sure to bring more diapers than you think you will need in your diaper bag if you’re traveling by plane. The middle of a long flight is not the place where you want to realize that your child is going through more diapers than you anticipated.

  • Travel potty

For toddlers who are potty trained or in the process of potty training, a portable potty can be a lifesaver when traveling.

There are a few different kinds, but one of the most useful for travel is a foldable seat that can be placed over a larger toilet to make a secure and smaller seat for your toddler. This allows toddlers to feel safer on a toilet and helps to prevent any potty training regressions while traveling. They’re also compact and can easily be folded up and carried in your diaper bag.

See our list of the best travel potties for toddlers for the best options out there.

Clothes are obviously going to be a travel essential. We’ll highlight a few items in this section and you can find a more detailed list of clothes down in the packing list.

If you’re trying to pack light, bring outfits that can be mixed and matched.

Make sure that you’re packing weather appropriate clothes for your toddler (eg. sun hat, swimsuit, sunglasses vs winter coat, gloves, warm hat).

Plan on bringing an extra pair of pajamas or two in case of nighttime accidents. It’s also a good idea to bring an extra pair of shoes in case you lose one or they get wet.

Toddler travel packing list

This is our tried and tested toddler packing list that I use for every trip. I love being able to pack for a trip and know I’m not missing anything important as long as I double check my trusty list!

Packing tip: Spend a few minutes thinking about your toddler to determine if there are any toddler travel essentials that you should include that are specific to your child. For example, our oldest went through a phase where he couldn’t handle the smell of the toilet, so there was a period where we always carried a travel sized Poo-Pourri around with us. Our other two never had the same issue, so that wasn’t included in their packing lists. There might be items that your child needs that other people wouldn’t think to include.

Final Thoughts

With a little preparation, traveling with a toddler can actually be a lot of fun. We’ve had great experiences traveling with our toddlers over the years (along with the occasional meltdown of course).

These toddler travel essentials will help your trip go a lot more smoothly. And you can rest assured knowing that you’ve done everything you can to set yourself up for success!

5 Best Toddler Backpacks for Preschool and Beyond, Tested by Kids

profile picture of Korin Miller

In a nutshell:

Based on my family’s experience testing each of these backpacks, the STATE Bags Kane Kids Mini Travel Backpack is the overall best backpack for toddlers. It was a big hit with me and my kids due to its comfortable, padded straps, spacious interior and style-conscious design.

Your little one may not be slinging a bag full of textbooks over their shoulders just yet, but a top-notch backpack for preschool (and other adventures) is still a must-have accessory. I first bought a toddler backpack when my third child was tiny, after noticing she wanted her own, like her big brothers. I now have four children and a mudroom crowded with everything from big kids’ backpacks to preschool bookbags and toddler backpacks.

I know from experience that the best toddler backpacks are multi-purpose vehicles for snacks, toys, books and more. Many will get daily use at daycare, preschool and other activities, making durability a crucial element in these bags. To help you find the best toddler backpacks, I had my family put popular options to the test. Luckily, there are plenty of kids’ backpacks out there for you and your child to choose from, and each one is cuter than the next. Shop our top picks for every style, budget and need—then, read on to learn what to look for in a toddler backpack and safety tips.

How We Tested and Chose the Toddler Backpacks

toddler travel bag preschool

A toddler backpack is an important accessory for your little one, making this a purchase you want to get right from the start. To streamline your search, we took the following steps to test and choose the best toddler backpacks:

  • We gave a one-year-old and 4-year-old several backpacks to test out. Each product was used for two full days and traveled to the playground, preschool and beach, among other places. Backpacks were zipped and unzipped at least 30 times to ensure the zipper’s durability. Each backpack was also handed to our kid testers, who got to choose how they used them at home to create a natural testing experience.
  • We consulted with the safety recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to ensure we only highlighted products that are safe and effective.
  • To see how these toddler backpacks have worked for kids, we conducted exhaustive market research, scouring external forums and message boards and reading user reviews to find out what brands and styles families across the country commonly used.

Editorial integrity is at the heart of everything we publish. Read about how The Bump develops and reviews all articles , including product reviews.

The Best Toddler Backpacks

Overall best toddler backpack.

STATE Bags Kane Kids Mini Travel Backpack

  • Organizational pockets, inside and out
  • Comfortable straps
  • Travel-friendly features
  • Customizable design
  • Chest strap available for additional fee
  • High price point

The best toddler backpacks give you a range of uses—easily transitioning from playtime to school or daycare—just like the Kane Kids Mini Travel Backpack from STATE Bags. It’s roomy enough to hold numerous items, including a folder, without being so big that younger toddlers can’t safely carry it. This bag features an impressive level of comfort thanks to thick straps with ample padding; my daughter even forgot she was wearing it at one point. The zippers are thick and sturdy, and glide around the backpack seamlessly. STATE Bags offers a mix of bright, fun colorways my daughter was drawn to, but it isn't overly cutesy, which style-conscious parents will appreciate.

Unlike most toddler backpacks, the Kane Kids Mini has an interior water bottle pocket to prevent spills. It kept my daughter’s water bottle from slipping out of the pocket when she bent over, and also left the top of her bottle free of dirt and other gunk it normally picks up. The only downside of this internal pocket is that it takes up some room on the inside of the bag—but the large exterior pocket helps make up the difference. This kids’ backpack is even travel-friendly, with a luggage band to slip over a suitcase for no added cost. However, it comes at a higher price if you want a detachable chest strap. You also have the option to customize the bag with initials, symptoms, pins and patches. While this isn’t the cheapest toddler backpack out there, it has plenty of uses to give busy families lots of mileage out of the bag.

Dimensions: 3.54” (L) x 9.45” (W) x 12.6” (H) | Capacity: 6.9 L | Weight: 12.3 oz. | Materials: 100% polyester | Age rating: 2 to 4 years

Our product tester says:

There's no flap surrounding the zipper exterior, making this the easiest back to secure and go.

Best toddler backpack for preschool

Herschel Heritage Backpack Kids 15L

  • Large enough to fit a folder
  • Plenty of padding
  • Fun, toddler-approved prints
  • No interior pocket
  • Not ideal for kids under three

Preschool backpacks need to be able to fit a lunchbox, water bottle, folder and usually a change of clothes—they’ll need to have a decent capacity. Herschel’s 15-liter Heritage Backpack for kids fits the bill. It has the roominess preschoolers need with large zipper teeth and pulls that are easy to fasten and unfasten independently. The backpack is designed for kiddos who are three years or older, which seems accurate—while it fit my 4-year-old, it came down to my one-year-old’s knees. The straps adjust seamlessly and have a band to keep excess fabric from flapping around when your child walks. There is also a chest clip that can be pushed up or down for quick adjustments. This kids’ backpack is durable, too: It survived a tug of war between my daughters just fine, to say nothing of being repeatedly being tossed around in the car and playground.

The straps on this toddler backpack are thick—with plenty of padding—and my 4-year-old wore this to preschool and the playground with no issues. She said it felt smooth and comfortable against her back, and nothing in her backpack poked her. The design isn't fussy—there's just a main pocket and exterior pocket, along with a large water bottle pocket—but my 4-year-old appreciated that. While I liked the function of this preschool bookbag, my daughter was drawn to the style the most. It comes in an array of color options, ranging from a bold floral print to basic black, so you’re sure to find a fit for even the most discerning of kiddos.

Dimensions: 5” (L) x 10.5” (W) x 14” (H) | Capacity: 15 L | Weight: 13.7 oz. | Materials: 100% polyester | Age rating: 3 to 7 years

It has thoughtful details I appreciate, like a mesh lining on the inside of the straps to lower the risk of sweat marks. I have an adult Herschel backpack and this feels very similar, but with larger zipper teeth and zipper pulls.

Best high-quality construction toddler backpack

L.L.Bean Junior Original Book Pack

  • Durable construction
  • Plenty of pockets
  • Low price point
  • Not suitable for kids under 4
  • No chest strap

L.L.Bean is an icon in the backpack world, and the brand’s Junior Original Book Pack doesn’t disappoint. This children’s backpack received a perfect score during our testing: The only reason it wasn’t the best overall toddler backpack is that it’s designed for kids aged 4 and up, so it’s not suitable for a large portion of the younger toddler age group, or even the youngest preschoolers. The sturdy bag is complete with a number of high-quality details, from the well-sewn zipper tags to the strong seams. It's made from polyester, with a 3M Scotchlite reflective strip on the front that reflects car headlights. My daughter took this to preschool and it held up just fine to being tossed around. It even survived being grabbed by our Labrador puppy—further demonstrating its impressive durability.

L.L.Bean’s Junior Original has plenty of room for everything a preschooler, kindergartener and younger elementary school student will need to put inside. For instance, my daughter shoved in a stuffed animal for show and tell, along with her usual lunchbox, folder and change of clothes, and there was room to spare. The backpack also encourages organization, thanks to plenty of pockets, including a spot for pencils, small loose objects and other essentials in the large exterior pocket. While many toddler backpacks only have one zipper on the exterior pocket, this option has two, allowing you to access the space from different angles. Plus, it’s available in several fun colors and patterns. One potential downside: The main backpack zipper is covered with a protective material to extend its life, but kids run the risk of catching the zipper on this fabric if they try to move it too fast.

Dimensions: 6” (L) x 11” (W) x 14.5” (H) | Capacity: 16 L | Weight: 13 oz. | Materials: 100% polyester | Age rating: 4+ years

I had L.L.Bean backpacks growing up, and they were always incredibly durable—this one is more of the same high quality.

Cutest toddler backpack

Skip Hop Zoo Little Kid Toddler Backpack

  • Durable; used by two of my kids over three years
  • Surprisingly spacious
  • Several sweet designs
  • Water bottle pocket isn’t deep
  • Lighter exterior may show stains

All Skip Hop Zoo products feature distinct designs that showcase the brand’s cute animals. I originally purchased the narwhal version of this backpack when my now-4-year-old was a one-year-old, based purely on its aesthetic. I had no idea it would hold up as well as it has. This bag now gets regular use from her little sister who’s now a one-year-old, and there are no rips or tears in the fabric. My daughter will sometimes play with it like a stuffed animal, and we've never had any issues getting her to wear it. Skip Hop went the extra mile by sticking with the theme. Both zippers have a coordinating seashell keychain that's large enough for little hands to grip, and there's a narwhal "horn" sticking out from the back—how cute!

This toddler backpack isn't big enough to hold a folder, but it can house a decent amount of stuff for everyday use. I sometimes toss toys and snacks in it when I'm taking my kids out and can sling it over my shoulder when I need to. The only thing worth noting is that it doesn't have a chest clip, which could be a problem for younger or more petite toddlers. (Skip Hop makes a Mini version of this bag that has a chest clip, though.) There’s no interior pocket, but I've never missed it. The inside offers enough space for several books, coloring supplies and a few additional toys. Moreover, the exterior pocket is generous and has organizational elements, so you can separate snacks or wipes and extra diapers. There's also a beverage pocket on the side that's the perfect size for toddler water bottles. I've already purchased this backpack as a gift for family and friends. It offers a nice wow factor that's a great talking point at the playground, too.

Dimensions: 5” (L) x 11” (W) x 12” (H) | Capacity: 11 L | Weight: 6.4 oz. | Materials: 100% polyester | Age rating: 3+ years

This backpack has survived two of my daughters, which is really saying a lot! We initially bought it for my now-4-year-old when she was a year old and it's been passed down to her one-year-old sister.

Best backpack with a safety harness

Yodo Kids Insulated Toddler Backpack with Safety Harness

  • Detachable safety harness
  • Insulated interior
  • Several cute styles
  • Small capacity
  • Water bottle holders are snug

Setting boundaries with busy toddlers can be tough, and it’s understandable to at least wonder if your energetic little one might benefit from a safety harness. The Yodo Kids Insulated Toddler Backpack comes with a removable lead that you can use when you want and unclip when you don’t. The attachment secures at the bottom, which could cause your child to tip forward if they took off at a sprint. However, it worked well and kept my active toddler near me; she just looked annoyed when she couldn't wander.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Yodo backpack. It has light stuffing all around the exterior for a slightly squishy feel my daughter was excited about. The inside of this kids’ backpack doubles as an insulated lunch box, making it great for taking drinks and snacks to the park. The petite design would probably be too small for older toddlers but works great for younger kids. What’s more, the zipper is fluid and easy for both me and my daughter to use. While the capacity isn't huge, you shouldn't run into any issues if you're using it to carry lunch to the park.

This toddler backpack is adorable, thanks to a sweet dog face print and 3D elements, like floppy ears. All of the colors fit the theme, making this bag look almost like a stuffed animal; my daughter hugged it when I first showed it to her. The only drawback is that the side water bottle pockets are pretty tight. You need to stretch them to shove a drink inside, and bottles with a larger circumference won't fit. But that snugness means you can toss something smaller, like a pack of crayons, in without worrying about them slipping out. If you want a bag to carry your child's lunch, snacks, a water bottle (in the main pocket) and a few toys, this can handle it.

Dimensions: 4.5” (D) x 8.5” (W) x 10.6” (H) | Capacity: N/A | Weight: 6.4 oz. | Materials: 100% polyester | Age rating: 18 months to 3 years

This is more of an insulated lunchbox than a standard backpack, although you can fit crayons, books, and a small drawing pad in here just fine.

What to Look for in Toddler Backpacks

Being adorable isn’t the only criteria to consider when searching for the best toddler backpack. Here are some other factors to think about as you shop:

Size. Toddler backpacks need to be compact enough for a little kid to carry, but roomy enough to hold all the essentials. Check to see if your child’s daycare or preschool has any specific size requirements for bookbags; some ask that bags be able to hold a standard letter-size sheet of paper. A good range is anywhere between 10 to 15 inches tall. If you’re looking for a teeny tiny option, opt for a mini toddler backpack.

Ease of care. Spills, stains and messes are inevitable, so a toddler backpack that’s machine-washable—or at least easy to wipe down—is a must. Choose a bookbag made from a durable material, so it’ll last for many school days (and maybe years) to come. Some are even made from water-resistant fabrics for added convenience.

Lifestyle. Will your preschooler be carrying their bag themselves? Or, are you looking for a daycare backpack you can send in with your child that’s large enough to hold a change of clothes, snacks, meals and other essentials? Maybe you’re on the hunt for a tot-friendly travel bag . If your toddler tends to dart around, a backpack with a safety harness is worth considering. Whatever the case, be sure to consider what your child will be using their bookbag for to find a match that has all the features and accessories they need.

Toddler Backpack Safety Tips

Of course, toddler backpacks are cute, but there are also safety considerations to keep in mind before your child uses them. The AAP calls attention to several features that help make the best kids’ backpacks safe for young children to carry. When shopping, look for a preschool bookbag with two wide shoulder straps, a padded back and a chest strap, if possible.

Moreover, note where the bag’s name label is located. Ideally, it should be placed on the interior of the backpack so your child’s personal information isn’t on display to strangers. The same goes for monogrammed backpacks for toddlers: It’s safer to stick to initials instead of your child’s first name.

How We Chose Our Best Toddler Backpacks

  • We utilized insight from the Babylist editorial team, including Gear Editor Jen LaBracio, an expert in the baby space for over six years and a mom of two who has written hundreds of baby gear guides and personally researched and tested hundreds of baby products, including many toddler backpacks.
  • We consulted the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) backpack safety guidelines , keeping in mind features such as backpack size and weight, strap and back padding and the inclusion of a waist or chest strap. We also considered things like durability, washability and functionality.

Features to Look for When Buying a Toddler Backpack

Even if you don’t love to shop, picking out a toddler backpack can be fun—there are so many prints, patterns and designs available, and there’s something particularly delightful about sorting through pint-sized backpacks for your tiny toddler. You should keep a few things in mind while shopping, though.

Size and Weight

Size and weight are the two most important things to pay attention to when choosing a backpack, especially when you’re shopping for a toddler—and bigger isn’t better. According to the AAP, look for a backpack that goes from your toddler’s waist up to about one to two inches below their shoulders. This means the backpack you choose likely won’t hold a ton, but it will be appropriately sized for your small child. (Most toddler backpacks are between 10-12 inches tall.)

When packed, a backpack shouldn’t weigh more than fifteen percent of your toddler’s body weight. Have a thirty-pound toddler? Their backpack shouldn’t weigh more than four and a half pounds.

Some preschools and daycares have specific backpack size requirements in place, so check for guidelines before you buy.

Comfort and Support

Look for a toddler backpack with broad, padded and adjustable shoulder straps that distribute weight evenly across your child’s back. Other features like a padded back and a waist belt or chest/sternum strap can also help provide increased comfort.

Toddlers are rough on…well, everything. Your toddler’s backpack should be made from a durable material that can stand up to lots of wear and tear. If you live in a rainy climate, look for a water-resistant or even completely waterproof backpack.

Washability

Make sure the backpack you choose is either machine washable or easy to wipe or spot clean. Some toddler backpacks have waterproof or wipe-clean linings, a nice bonus, especially if your toddler will be toting around food or anything wet like a bathing suit.

Functionality

A large interior pocket, outside zippered pockets and pouches and a side pocket for a water bottle are all nice-to-have features in a toddler backpack.

The Best Backpacks for Toddlers

Most durable toddler backpack.

Pottery Barn Kids Mackenzie Navy Pink Multi Hearts Backpacks - $39.50+.

Pottery Barn Kids Mackenzie Navy Pink Multi Hearts Backpacks

Pottery Barn makes some of the best kid backpacks around, and their toddler version—dubbed the “mini” size by the brand—certainly doesn’t disappoint. The Mackenzie Backpack is the perfect combination of form and function. It’s available in lots of fun designs, so even the most discerning of toddlers will find something they like. The material, a water-resistant polyester, feels both sturdy and durable and stands up well to toddler wear and tear. And there are lots of features to love like adjustable, padded shoulder straps, a padded back panel and lots of pockets both inside and out, including one specifically sized to hold a water bottle.

The mini size doesn’t hold a ton (think a snack, a change of clothes and a small toy), but that’s exactly the point—a huge backpack can easily overwhelm your tiny toddler and be too tough for them to carry independently. You can personalize the Mackenzie with a name or initials and add a matching lunch box or water bottle.

Additional Specs

Most stylish toddler backpack.

State Mini Kane Kids Travel Backpack - $78.00.

State Mini Kane Kids Travel Backpack

The first thing that stands out about this backpack is the style, one of the things we love most about it. Designed more like a trendy adult backpack than something for the three-and-under set, the color block look of Mini Kane gives off big-time toddler cool vibes. The padded straps are easy to adjust for a comfortable, secure fit and there’s a smaller outside front zippered pocket for toddler treasures in addition to the backpack’s roomy interior space.

Note that this backpack doesn’t have a side pocket for a water bottle. (Or any side pockets, for that matter.) It does feature a luggage slip sleeve on the back panel, however, which comes in handy if you’re traveling.

Best Toddler Backpack with Safety Harness

Skip Hop Toddler Backpack Leash - $15.99.

Skip Hop Toddler Backpack Leash

Skip Hop offers a few different-sized kid backpacks, all in bright, fun animal-themed designs. This one, the brand’s mini size, makes the ideal first toddler backpack. There are adjustable shoulder straps and a mesh side pocket for a water bottle, a chest clip for extra comfort and a toddler-sized main compartment that’s the perfect size for snacks, toys and anything else your little one deems important enough for carrying around.

This toddler backpack has one more important feature: a safety harness. The tether attaches to the bottom of the backpack and features a wrist strap for you to wear if you’re headed to a crowded space and your little one likes to run off.

Best Eco-Friendly Toddler Backpack

Ten Little Recycled Backpack - $36.00.

Ten Little Recycled Backpack

If you’ve yet to try a pair of Ten Little sneakers for your kiddo, run, don’t walk (see what we did there?)—and toss this backpack into your cart while you’re shopping. It’s packed with thoughtful details that both you and your toddler will appreciate. It’s also made from 100% recycled materials, making it one of the most eco-friendly choices on our list.

Like many of our favorite toddler backpacks, this one has adjustable straps, a padded foam back and an adjustable chest strap. There’s a mesh pocket on either side for water bottles (or anything else) and extra pockets in the front and inside the bag. Another big plus: the backpack’s interior lining is waterproof, so spills are easy to wipe up. And if you’ve ever met a toddler, you recognize just how important that feature is.

Best Customizable Toddler Backpack

Becco Bags Kid's Hook & Loop Sport Backpack - $82.00.

Becco Bags Kid's Hook & Loop Sport Backpack

Does your toddler love rainbows one day and construction vehicles the next? You’re in luck. Becco backpacks are endlessly customizable—and highly delightful. The patent-pending hook-and-loop design system creates a blank canvas where your little one can stick (and unstick) a host of interchangeable patches whenever their heart desires. Add a monogram, a cupcake, a narwhal or a dinosaur and change them up whenever you’d like. (The patches don’t even leave any pulls or pilling behind—we tried.) Becco bags are perfectly sized for toddlers and also feature an adjustable shoulder strap, two-way zippers, interior zip and front/side pockets and a top handle.

Best Toddler Backpack You'll Want to Borrow

FJÄLLRÄVEN Mini Kånken Backpack - $80.00.

FJÄLLRÄVEN Mini Kånken Backpack

Scandinavian style, miniaturized. What could be better? If you love the full-size version of this iconic backpack, you’ll be pleased to know the toddler-friendly pack is just as great. It’s made from water-resistant, durable fabric and comes in a rainbow of cool colors. There’s also a front zippered pocket, snap-together top carry handles, two side pockets and a removable foam back pad for added comfort.

Our favorite part, though? Buy this backpack for your toddler and “borrow” it anytime just for you!

Best Washable Toddler Backpack

Dabbawalla Bags Rocket Backpack - $46.00.

Dabbawalla Bags Rocket Backpack

If there’s one universal truth about toddlers it’s that most of them are pretty messy. That’s why this toddler backpack from Dabbawalla, a Seattle-based company specializing in sustainable, functional packs for the preschool and early elementary set, is so genius. It’s completely machine washable, so it’s really easy to keep clean. The fabric has a foam-like feel and is degradable, recyclable and free of toxic chemicals. Other features to love include padded, adjustable shoulder straps, one exterior pocket and three interior mesh pockets.

And the prints and patterns? There are SO many great ones, like this truck design for construction lovers, a whimsical kitty , an adorable panda and so many more. Each design comes in a traditional backpack style or a backpack + toddler harness .

Most Unique Toddler Backpack

Mini A Ture Recycled Waterproof Backpack - $70.00.

Mini A Ture Recycled Waterproof Backpack

Danish style gives Swedish cool a run for its money with this satchel-style toddler backpack that stands out from the crowd. This sustainable bag is made from 100 percent recycled (and completely waterproof) nylon. The top part can be rolled up or down, and there are taped seams to keep any moisture from finding its way in.

The shoulder straps are adjustable, but they’re not padded, and there’s no back padding, either. There also aren’t any side pockets for stashing a water bottle. There is an adjustable chest clip for added support, though.

Best Affordable Toddler Backpack

KK Crafts Toddler Backpack - $19.99.

KK Crafts Toddler Backpack

This pint-sized backpack has a lot going for it at under twenty bucks. It’s made from water-resistant neoprene so it’s lightweight, durable and soft. There are plenty of pockets (a large main pocket, one interior pocket, two mesh side pockets and a zippered outer pocket, to be exact) along with padded, adjustable shoulder straps and a padded back. And there are over twenty characters and designs for your little one to choose from—the perfect option for any (every?) picky toddler.

Best Toddler Backpack for Camping

Mountaintop Kids Backpack - $27.99.

Mountaintop Kids Backpack

Heading into the great outdoors with your toddler in tow? If you’re camping or hiking, look for a backpack like this one that’s lightweight, easy to clean and has good back and shoulder support. It’s made from durable, water-resistant polyester, and the main compartment is completely waterproof, perfect for storing a small towel or a wet bathing suit apart from everything else. The padded shoulder straps are adjustable and there’s a chest clip for added support if your toddler wants to carry their backpack while hiking. There’s also a front elastic loop with an adjustable toggle for attaching a jacket or even a stuffy.

Just note that this backpack is a larger size when compared to most on our list (15 inches tall, like many preschooler backpacks, rather than 10-12 inches tall like most toddler backpacks), so it may be better suited for an older or larger toddler.

Toddler Backpack with the Best Prints

Herschel Heritage Kids Backpack - $40.00.

Herschel Heritage Kids Backpack

Whether your toddler is into cute designs like sharks or dinosaurs or prefers solid color combos like pinks and purples, there’s something for everyone here. The Heritage is styled just like the brand’s adult backpacks (including the striped interior lining) but sized down for smaller wearers. There are two compartments, a main interior and a zippered exterior pouch, along with adjustable padded shoulder straps and a removable sternum strap. The kids’ version is sized for little ones ages three to seven, but the backpack is also available in youth and youth XL sizes. Just note there’s no water bottle pocket.

Most Whimsical Toddler Backpack

Crate&kids flower garden small kids backpack with side pockets.

Who doesn’t love a good floral? This whimsical print is both playful and stylish, but this toddler backpack is also super functional. It’s made from polyester sourced from recycled water bottles and is roomy enough to hold lots of stuff. The small size features a water-resistant shell, a zippered front pouch, two side pockets, adjustable padded shoulder straps and a padded grab handle. You can add a monogram or other personalization, too.

"My parents bought me my first Tough Traveler bag when I started kindergarten. I replaced it a couple years later with their standard book bag backpack and got a bit over a decade of service from it. In over 30 years, I've gone through 3 of those day packs plus one full sized frame pack and a weekend sized pack and put them ALL through the heaviest of use. Now I use just the Tough Traveler weekend sized pack for short term camping and have my decade old book bag as a spare. Nothing holds up so long through such heavy use. Nothing. I cannot recommend them highly enough." --Brian Chabot

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.
