Some travelers spend only 2-3 hours at Cenote Ik Kil and are content. Of course, you can spend the whole day at Cenote Ik Kil if you want to.

Cenote Ik Kil Layout and Structure

Are there facilities at Cenote Ik Kil?

Yes — The facilities at Ik Kil include changing rooms, bathrooms, lockers, outdoor showers, two restaurants, several snack bars, convenience stores, drink stands and bars, and even a souvenir shop.

🏩Cenote Ik Kil Cabanas

There are also cabanas at Cenote Ik Kil for those who want to stay the night.

Called Hotel Ik-Kil , you’ll also have access to the facility after most guests have gone, as well as amenities like hammocks and sun beds to relax on.

Cenote Ik Kil is definitely a more commercial cenote than some. In fact, some people call it the Disneyland Cenote because it is so developed.

🪜Cenote Ik Kil Staircase to Enter

guests wearing life jackets taking the stairs to go down cenote ik kil

Once you’ve passed through the changing room and shower area, it’s time to walk down to the cenote.

The staircase consists of 90 steps with chain railings and a few landings from which to take pictures (or leap into the water).

Cenote Ik Kil pier (platform)

At the base of the staircase, you’ll find a raised stone landing or platform where you can rest or jump into the water.

🛑 Note: You can’t store your belongings like backpacks and/or towels on the pier. There’s a guard at the cenote entrance that will make you take your belongings and store them in a locker.

🚿 Cenote Ik Kil Showers, Changing Rooms & Restrooms

bathroom and changing area in cenote ik kil

The first part of the installations at Ik Kil is much like a public swimming pool. Use the restrooms and changing rooms, then rinse off in the showers.

Taking a shower before going down to the cenote is MANDATORY .

You are not allowed to use sunscreen , bug spray, or any other product. It’s so far down that you don’t need sunscreen there anyway.

Rinsing off all of these chemicals helps protect the pure fresh water (and the beauty) of the cenote.

🔐 Cenote Ik Kil Lockers

locker area in cenote ik kil

The lockers at Ik Kil are pretty standard, but useful.

While I’ve always felt safe at Ik Kil Cenote, there’s always a possibility you lose something (or worse, someone might steal something), so make sure you use the lockers.

🦺 Cenote Ik Kil Life Jackets

life jackets in cenote ik kil

Wearing a life jacket in the cenote is mandatory because Cenote Ik-Kil is so deep at 157-feet (48 m). That’s pretty impressive, is it not?

Due to the extensive Cenote Ik Kil depth, lifejackets are required when swimming, but also when being in the cenote area.

Since there aren’t many places to rest along the sheer walls, wearing a lifejacket is an important safety precaution near the cenote in case you fall in.

Are there restaurants at Cenote Ik Kil?

Yes — There are two different restaurants at Ik Kil, one of them is a buffet restaurant, and the other offers fast-food-style fare.

guests eating at cenote ik kil restaurant

The latter is a great spot to enjoy a cold drink and a sandwich or hamburger with a big portion of guacamole on the side.

The buffet restaurant is all-you-can-eat. There are usually 11 different options for the main course, plus fruit and jello for dessert. You can eat inside with AC or outside on a porch, as there is a buffet in both areas.

🍻 Cenote Ik Kil Snack bars

You can also buy smaller snack foods like nachos and ice cream, as well as alcoholic drinks like micheladas, at various little stands on the property.

If you only want something quick so you can jump back in the cenote, opt for the snack bars at Cenote Ik-Kil.

Are there hotels in Cenote Ik Kil?

If you’d like to have Cenote Ik Kil to yourself, book a stay at the Hotel Ik Kil . There aren’t any other hotels Ik Kil offers, but this one is pretty great on its own.

A term that originates from the Maya language, Ik Kil means Place of the Wind .

Even the name cenote is derived from the Mayan dz’onot, which means abyss with water.

Cenote Ik Kil history

Multiple articles claim that bones and jewelry were found in Cenote Ik Kil as sacrifices to the Mayan rain god , and that it was reserved for Mayan Royalty.

However, I wasn’t able to find a definitive source for these claims.

The oils and chemicals in lotion and sunscreen (even eco-friendly sunscreens) will harm the cenotes.

Please do your part to practice sustainable tourism in Mexico by not applying lotion and sunscreen on the day you’re planning to visit Ik Kil.

As Ik Kil is located underground in a cave, there’s no worry of getting a sunburn for the majoriy of visitors.

When you get out of the cenote, you’re free to apply sunscreen, and this Bullfrog anti-bug sunscreen is great for both sun and mosquito protection.

🚫📆 If possible, DON’T Visit Cenote Ik Kil on Weekends

cenote sign

There have been quite a few mentions throughout this article about this being one of the most Instagram worthy cenotes in Mexico.

On that note, remember the Instagram vs Reality factor when you’re planning to visit.

Those people-less Instagram photos were likely taken on a Tuesday morning at 9am when there was no one else there.

Besides just photos, this is a smaller cenote, and an overall much more pleasant experience without 100 other people in there with you.

Cenote Ik kil Mexico

What are cenotes.

Cenotes are sinkholes created by underground rivers that eat away at the soft limestone rock of the Yucatan Peninsula. Over time, the rivers carve out deep pools underground, which are the cenotes.

cenote ik kil mexico with blue water and vine going into the water

Sometimes, the roof of the cavern above the pool falls in, opening all or part of it to the sky. That’s why cenotes can also be called sinkholes.

Other times, the cenote stays hidden underground in a cavern only accessible by narrow ladders, rappelling, or cave diving.

There are more than six thousand cenotes in the Yucatán Peninsula , making them a key part of the landscape. They have also been of cultural and religious importance since the days of the Itzá and the Maya.

While everyone in the Yucatan Peninsula raves about cenotes, now many know the answer to the question, What is a cenote? — but now you do!

What are the 4 types of cenotes?

Of the (approx.) 6,000 cenotes in Yucatan , there are four distinct types of cenotes: open , semi-open , cave and diving cenotes .

cenote azul

Each type is unique and beautiful in its own way, so make sure to visit as many types of Mexican cenotes as you can.

Open Cenotes

You may see these called swimming pool cenotes, as they are completely open and look like a natural swimming pool — like Cenote Azul and Casa Cenote .

Semi-Open Cenotes

These cenotes are semi-encased in their native limestone rock. Semi-open cenotes have large walls surrounding the pool itself, and a large hole in the top of it so some sunlight gets in — like Cenote Ik-Kil and El Gran Cenote .

Closed Cenotes in Caves

Cave cenotes are exactly as the name says. These are located underground in a cave, and you’ll have to access them by going down some stairs — like Cenote Suytun .

Dive Cenotes for Diving

man diving in cenote el pit

The final type is also located inside a cave, but the water in these cenotes is much deeper so they are sought out for diving — like Cenote El Pit at Cenote Dos Ojos Park.

🤿 Note: You must be certified to for cenotes diving! For those who are, check out these tours — Go Dive Cenotes in Tulum Tour and Cenotes Scuba Diving Tulum Tour .

Final Thoughts: How to Visit Cenote Ik Kil

guests swimming in cenote ik kil

Cenote Ik Kil is a gorgeous sinkhole famed for the trailing vines cascading down its sheer walls and its clear waters.

Thanks to its close proximity to Chichén Itzá Mayan Runs in Mexico, Cenote Ik Kil is an easy destination to add to an area itinerary.

It is also frequented by tour groups who are also headed on a Chichen Itza tour , so it gets very crowded. After all, this is the most popular cenote near Chichen Itza.

💡 Cenote Ik Kil Pro Tips: If you want to enjoy Cenote Ik Kil when there are few people there, it’s best to go near the Ik Kil opening hour, or 1-2 hours before closing time after the tour buses have left for the day.

What should you know before visiting cenote Ik Kil?

Why cenote ik kil is so special.

Cenote Ik Kil is an oustanding cenote due to its exceptional features.

First, its natural beauty is simply spectacular . As an open air cenote, Ik Kil consists of a almost perfectly rounded 200-feet (60-meter) wide sinkhole with walls going under ground level for about 30 meters before reaching the water level. This means, that you’ll need to climb down a quite slippery stairway before being able to enter the cenote waters which, by the way, have a depth of 50 meters. If you’re counting, that makes of Ik Kil a sinkhole of 80 meters or 240 feet deep in total . What’s more, on ground level, the sinkhole is surrounded by lush vegetation and lots of vines which go down all the way to the water level. This makes for a marvelous postcard-like effect, which adds to the beauty and popularity of Ik Kil. It’s important to mention that touching the vines is prohibited, in order to protect them from the massive amounts of visitors the cenote receives every day. Once you’ve walked down the steps that take you to the water level of the cenote, you can enter the water either by using the set of wooden ladders made up for that purpose or you can choose to jump from one of the two different jumping platforms of 10 and 20 feet (3 and 6 meters) high that you can reach by a separat set of stairs built around the cenote. Once in the water, you’ll notice that in contrast with the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, cenotes water is cold and refreshing . However, this is a welcomed feeling that helps to cool visitors a bit and make them forget about the high temperatures usually felt in the Riviera Maya.

Is cenote Ik Kil safe??

Yes, you can swim safely.

Although there are always two lifeguard on duty , there are also a couple of ropes in the water that visitors use to sit on it or simply grab it to take a respite from the constant swimming. Keep in mind that even if you’re an expert swimmer, this is a 50-meter deep cenote and if you suffer any muscle cramp or some kind of accident this could be dangerous. Lifejackets are available for rent at the entrance and are always a good idea.

Some important recommendations

Be careful, the steps that go down to the cenote can be slippery and it is recommended that families with children keep a close eye on them.

Remember that it is absolutely prohibited to touch the vines and even more so to hang from them. This measure is in order to protect them from the large number of visitors who come every year to discover this extraordinary site.

What are the rules for swimming in the cenotes?

Cenotes are extremely fragile ecosystems . Therefore, it is essential to respect very strict hygiene measures before swimming to avoid contaminating the waters of the cenotes.

It is prohibited to use sunscreen or mosquito repellent before entering the water.

A shower before entering the cenote is mandatory to remove all traces of these highly polluting products from your body.

People with dyed hair are asked not to get into the cenote because dyes are highly polluting. It is important to respect these measures to preserve the cenotes that are under strong tourist pressure and risk of contamination.

Fun fact about Cenote Ik Kl

It's a cenote for athletes.

To finish this post, one fun fact about Cenote Ik Kil.

Ik Kil has hosted the adrenaline- high Red Bull cliff diving events in 2010, 2011, and 2014. Although the event is quite popular and helped to make Ik Kil even more famous, cliff diving from the top isn’t allowed at Ik Kil. One thing is for professional divers to perform highly trained and choreographed jumps and quite a different story is for an amateur tourist trying to dive into a rocky cenote from a height of 30 meters.

Visiting Cenote Ik Kil, Yucatan, Mexico – a Complete Guide

The moment I saw Cenote Ik Kil’s trellising vines on Instagram, I wanted to go.

Cenote Ik Kil, also known as the Chichen Itza cenote, is one of the most recognizable cenotes near Tulum for its deep, cavernous pool and lush greenery-clad walls.

Is this photogenic cenote worth visiting?

Originally excited about my impending visit, the closer I got to actually going, the more skeptical I became of this cenote’s social media fame. Yet, I went and am here to share my experience with you.

how to visit cenote ik kil chichen itza swimming sinkhole yucatan mexico instagrammable spots tulum photo worthy

When to Go to Cenote Ik Kil

Cenote Ik Kil is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. Like many experiences in the Yucatan, 5 pm is the last entrance time. 5:30 pm is when the cenote actually closes.

Before going, I was concerned about how many people would be at the cenote when I visited. Cenote Ik Kil can have hundreds of visitors each hour.

I reached the cenote around 11 am. There were several people there, however nowhere near hundreds. By the time I was leaving, the cenote was already much busier than when I arrived. I’d imagine that by 1 or 2 pm, there would be closer to 100.

Visit Cenote Ik Kil as early as your itinerary allows. Many recommend going first thing in the morning, however I recommend visiting Chichen Itza first, as it gets significantly busier than the cenote.

Aim to reach Chichen Itza at its opening time at 8 am and Cenote Ik Kil by 10:30 am to beat large crowds.

Keep in mind that both Chichen Itza and Cenote Ik Kil are in the central time zone. If you’re traveling from Tulum or Cancun, plan accordingly!

cenote ik kil entrance fee admission price

Cenote Ik Kil Entrance Fee

Cenote Ik Kil admission has two options: a bundle with food and drink or entrance only.

Admission Package 1

Package 1 includes access to the cenote, use of a locker for the day, and a life jacket.

Adults: $150 pesos (approximately $7.50 USD)

Children: $100 pesos (approximately $5 USD)

Admission Package 2

Package 2 includes everything from Package 1, in addition to “restaurant service” and one drink.

Adults: $350 pesos (approximately $17.50 USD)

Children: $230 pesos (approximately $11.50 USD)

I recommend Package 1. There are two restaurants at Cenote Ik Kil, but if you’re going on a day trip to Chichen Itza and Coba as well, there are tons of great local restaurants along the way!

How Deep is Cenote Ik Kil?

Cenote Ik Kil is an open-air cenote, meaning that it’s basically a big sinkhole. As a result, the water level starts 26 meters (85 feet) below ground level. The water itself is roughly 40 meters (130 feet) deep.

As Cenote Ik Kil is much deeper than many of the cenotes in the Yucatan and near Tulum, I recommend wearing a life jacket.

Compared to other cenotes I have visited, Cenote Ik Kil does not have very many places in the water to grab a rock or wall, much less stand up. This makes the cenote less child-friendly than other cenotes in the area, but do still expect to see children there.

Life jackets are included with admission. Take advantage!

How to Get to Cenote Ik Kil

Renting a car and driving to cenote ik kil.

Driving is the best way to get to Cenote Ik Kil. Taxis to the cenote from Tulum and Cancun are pricey, especially if you’re not traveling with many people. Car rental in Cancun is very inexpensive and allows you better freedom to visit surrounding sites!

Rent a car when you land in Cancun to save on transfers to and from the Cancun airport and your resort. If you’re staying in Tulum, many hotels and Airbnbs offer free parking. Cenote Ik Kil also has a large parking lot on-site, where parking is free.

If you are driving, make sure to fill up on gas prior to leaving Tulum. There are very few gas stations on the way to Chichen Itza and the cenote.

Private Taxi to Cenote Ik Kil

If you are uncomfortable driving in Mexico, you can hire a taxi or private driver for the day to take you between Tulum and Chichen Itza. This is the most expensive way to reach the Chichen Itza area but it eliminates the stress of other transportation methods.

As the area the cenote is in is more remote than Tulum, I recommend hiring a driver for the full day rather than just one way. You may have difficulty trying to find return transportation if only hiring a taxi for one direction.

Colectivo to Cenote Ik Kil

If you’re staying in Valladolid, there are colectivos (minibusses) that shuttle between Valladolid and Chichen Itza. This is a very cost-effective way to reach Chichen Itza without a car, and relatively efficient as Valladolid is an hour away. A colectivo will run you 35 pesos ($1.75 USD) per person in each direction.

The first colectivo of the day departs from the center of Valladolid at 7 am. I recommend getting on this colectivo to reach Chichen Itza at the opening.

I did not take a colectivo to Cenote Ik Kil, however I have been informed that a colective can take you to the cenote directly. If not, hire a taxi from the colectivo drop-off at Chichen Itza to Cenote Ik Kil. Pay the taxi to wait while you’re at the cenote, and drop you off again at Chichen Itza to make the colectivo back.

Chichen Itza Tours with Cenote Ik Kil

Tours are the best option to reach Chichen Itza and Cenote Ik Kil without a car. Many of these tours include a stop in Valladolid, a colonial town an hour outside of the Chichen Itza area.

There are several tours from Cancun and Tulum that will pick you up and return you to your hotel. Book a private tour for more control over how much time you spend at each location.

Visiting Chichen Itza on a group tour is more cost-effective than hiring a driver for the day. Additionally, able to learn about Mayan civilization with a knowledgeable guide included in the price, which you wouldn’t have with a driver alone.

What to Bring to Cenote Ik Kil

Cash in pesos.

To pay for admission, you’ll need cash!

Always carry cash in Mexico, especially in the Yucatan. Some gas stations will only take cash, taxis only take cash, and street vendors are also cash-only.

Cenotes have a whole different world underneath the water. This makes them popular with divers. Even if you’re not a diver, bring goggles and maybe even a snorkel to explore what’s below!

The best part of visiting a cenote is being able to swim in the clear blue water in such a picturesque setting! There typically aren’t many places to purchase swimwear near cenotes if you forget your own, if any at all.

Most cenotes do not have towel rentals. Forgetting to bring a towel to the cenote is a mistake I’ve made too many times! Bring your own, whether it be from home or your hotel.

GoPro Camera

GoPro is my camera of choice for cenotes. GoPros are waterproof and will shoot underwater. Cenotes have so much beauty underneath the surface, and a GoPro will allow you to capture that.

Waterproof Phone Bag

Cenote Ik Kil especially has very few dry areas to put a phone. As a matter of fact, you need to walk through the water to reach the area you can!

If your phone isn’t water resistant, I recommend buying an inexpensive clear phone bag to protect it from being ruined. Click here to shop a six-pack of bags for under $15.

Visiting Cenote Ik Kil

After seeing so many dreamy images of Cenote Ik Kil on Instagram and Pinterest, I had high expectations. The romantic vines draping down from the top, the light streaming into the clear, blue water, it seemed magical and secluded.

When I arrived, I was surprised to see just how commercial and developed the cenote was. The grounds for it, the restaurants, rentals, and everything were larger than the actual cenote! It was a stark contrast to nearby Cenote Suytun , which I visited a few months prior.

After purchasing admission, everyone had to go through a temperature check, use hand sanitizer, and walk through a sanitation arch. From there, it’s a five-minute walk through the property to reach the locker and life jacket checkout. Put your belongings in a locker, and grab a life jacket. With the depth of the cenote, you’ll want it! If you don’t have many belongings, you can probably get away with just putting your towel and phone or camera on one of the steps inside the cenote if it isn’t a very busy time.

Outside of the locker and life jacket checkout are showers. You are expected to rinse off prior to getting into the water. It’s a general policy for most cenotes that they do not allow you to wear sunscreen or bug spray in them as they are concerned about polluting the water, hence why you need to rinse off thoroughly.

When you’re ready to get into the cenote, you’ll descend down a steep staircase to reach the water. The water level of the cenote is 26 meters below ground level, so watch your step on those steep stairs! There are a few overlook areas on the stairs down, which were a fun way to look over the cenote.

cenote ik kil overlook yucatan mexico sinkhole chichen itza swimming

In all honesty, the cenote itself was much smaller than I was expecting. I was expecting there to be a few more areas around the actual water that would allow for rest. There is a staircase on the other side of where you enter into the water, which many use to place phones and towels or to jump into the water. Cenote Ik Kil had a lifeguard watching out on the platform at the top of the staircase.

When I was there, the staircase was crowded with people trying to get the perfect shot for Instagram. Most of the time, there were more people on the staircase than there were in the actual water! As a blogger and photographer, I have no issue with people taking photos, unless they’re being disruptive to the actual experience or inconsiderate to others around them. Unfortunately, at Cenote Ik Kil, this was a little bit the case. It was more just a bit annoying and a slight inconvenience rather than a major issue.

cenote ik kil yucatan mexico sinkhole chichen itza sinkhole instagrammable cenote swimming

The water in the cenote is cool—perfect on a hot day, but if you’re visiting in the winter months, you may find it a bit chilly early in the morning. There are tons of small black catfish in the water, also. Not quite as many as Cenote Suytun , but definitely enough to be noticeable. These fish are harmless and will swim away when moved towards.

If you’re not a fish person, cenotes may not be for you. Each one I’ve been to has had aquatic life, which has been so much fun to see and discover!

I spent about an hour at Cenote Ik Kil total. Most of the time was spent looking at the cenote from the overlooks or hanging out in the water near the staircase rather than actually swimming in the center.

The Bottom Line: Is Cenote Ik Kil Worth Visiting

Cenote Ik Kil is a fun cenote to look at for the beautiful vines. However, fellow tourists being noisy and inconsiderate kind of ruined the magical, secluded feel of the cenote for me. The yelling, splashing, and kicking diminished the quiet beauty of nature. As the cenote is “Instafamous,” the staircase and platform were consistently crowded by people trying to take photos.

Although it’s most practical to get to the cenote around 10:30 or 11 am after a visit to Chichen Itza, if you really care about having the full Cenote Ik Kil effect, get to the cenote right when it opens at 9 am.

Is Cenote Ik Kil worth visiting? Honestly, I don’t have a straight answer for you.

Yes, if you’re visiting early in the morning when the cenote will be quiet. I think if I had visited when the cenote was empty or near empty, it would have been a totally different experience.

I think it’s worth visiting for at least a short time just to see it, but I wouldn’t plan on spending a lot of time here if you come during peak hours when the cenote is busy as it isn’t the most swimmable or explorable cenote. This isn’t a cenote I would go out of my way for, but it’s worth the stop on a Chichen Itza day trip.

I personally prefer Cenote Suytun on the way from Tulum to Chichen Itza over Cenote Ik Kil. It was a much quieter experience and felt like such a special place to be. Gran Cenote in Tulum is great if you’re looking for a cenote that’s easy to explore and swim in.

There’s a reason why cenotes are among the places to visit in Yucatan , Mexico. There are TONS of beautiful cenotes in the Yucatan and Quintana Roo, you can’t go wrong with any of them.

Ik Kil Cenote – Everything you need to know before you go!

Ik Kil Cenote – Everything you need to know before you go!

As one of the most popular attractions in the Yucatan Peninsula, the Ik Kil Cenote continues to attract visitors from all over the world. Although this sinkhole is quite large at 200 feet wide and over 150 feet deep, it’s Ik Kil’s lush, tropical setting that makes it one of the most stunning places to visit.

The perfectly round opening is overflowing with lush vines and plants, many of which are long enough to touch the surface of the turquoise blue waters.

Not only is Ik Kil a beautiful place to swim and cliff dive but it’s also believed to be one of the most sacred cenotes in Mexico . Historians believe that the Mayans would come to the sinkhole to make human sacrifices to Chaac, the rain god.

During the cenote’s discovery, historical artifacts and human remains were found at the bottom of the cenote by archeologists. Although everything has already been excavated, it’s still worth taking a dip in this cenote.

Below is our guide to making the most of your visit to this amazing cenote.

Best Ik Kil Cenote Tour – We recommend this one

Planning your visit to Ik Kil Cenote

Ik Kil is one of Mexico’s most beautiful cenotes but also one of the most popular. Ik Kil is often paired with a trip to the Chichen Itza Ruins since there is only a short distance apart.

Most tours will take you to the Mayan Ruins in the morning and then cool off in the cenote in the afternoon. While this is a good order to do things – if you want fewer crowds, try visiting this cenote earlier in the day.

Il Kil Cenote Hours & Entrance Fees

  • Hours: Daily 9 am – 5 pm
  • Entrance Fee: 100 Pesos (adults), 40 Pesos (children)
  • Get Directions

Snorkeling in Ik Kil Cenote

Compared to other places in Mexico, the Ik Kil Cenote isn’t overflowing with tropical fish or colorful corals. Although there’s not much to see, it’s still possible to snorkel in Ik Kil.

The water is extremely deep, so you will only be able to see a few feet below you. If you’re lucky, you might be able to see some black catfish swimming around. However, don’t expect to see a huge variety of fish in Ik Kil.

The facilities at Ik Kil Cenote do not rent snorkel equipment, so you should bring your own if you want to explore the depths. A snorkel mask also makes it easier to stay afloat since you don’t have to tread water the entire time.

Whatever you do, don’t drop the mask, as it will probably sink to the bottom of the 150-foot sinkhole, never to be found again.

Cliff Jumping in Ik Kil Cenote

Cliff jiving into the Ik Kil Cenote is by far the most popular activity for visitors. There is a carved stairway that leads up to several diving platforms. The lowest platform is nine feet high, which is a relatively easy jump for first-time divers.

You can head up to the higher 18-foot platform for something more thrilling. Don’t worry if the height makes you feel intimidated; there is a lifeguard on duty at all times in case something goes wrong.

Equipment Rental Prices at Ik Kil Cenote

Ik Kil has fully equipped facilities to make your trip more enjoyable. You’ll find a desk near the changing rooms that rents out lifejackets for 30 Pesos.

Since the sinkhole is over 150 feet deep, many people feel more comfortable swimming with a bit of extra protection. If you choose to swim without a lifejacket, be prepared to tread water since there are limited places to stand while in the cenote.

Reasons to Visit Ik Kil Cenote

1. The breathtaking scenery

Draped in lush vines and green leaves, Ik Kil Cenote is a spectacular sight to behold. The steep surrounding walls extend 90 feet into the air and add a dramatic look to the already stunning sinkhole. You’ll even find a few cascading waterfalls along the sides of the cenote walls.

Make sure not to pull, hang, or swing from the vines. This is strictly prohibited and will get you kicked out of the Ik Kil Cenote.

2. Easy to reach from Chichen Itza

Ik Kil Cenote is located in proximity to Chichen Itza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It’s the perfect place to relax and cool off after a long day of sightseeing and walking around the Mayan ruins.

Most tours to Ik Kil are combined with a day trip to Chichen Itza so that you can tick both destinations off your bucket list.

3. Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series

If Ik Kil’s tropical setting looks familiar, it’s because it was the setting for the Red Bull Cliff Diving competition, where professional athletes would jump down almost 100 feet off the edges of the cenote’s opening.

Ik Kil hosted the event in 2010, 2011, and, most recently, 2014. Although you are not allowed to jump from the opening of the cenote, there are still several diving platforms below where you can experience the thrill for yourself.

4. Excellent facilities

Despite its off-the-beaten-path location, Ik Kil has top-notch facilities to make your visit more comfortable. There are two on-site restaurants, a locker (30 pesos), changing rooms, and even a souvenir shop.

You can also rent lifejackets if you want assistance staying afloat while you’re swimming in the cenote. If you’re interested in spending a few days near Ik Kil, you can also rent a bungalow at the nearby hotel.

5. Several diving platforms

Although many people come to Ik Kil to swim, diving from one of the two diving platforms is possible. Although you may not be able to experience the thrill of diving from the cenote opening, you can still make a splash by jumping several feet down into the cool, refreshing waters.

If you’re looking for a thrilling adventure, make sure to take a dive off these heart-stopping cliffs!

Cenote Ik Kil: The Place of the Winds

Cenote Ik Kil is located around Valladolid in the Yucatán Peninsula. In Mayan, it translates roughly to “Place of the Winds”, and some would argue that it is the most beautiful cenote in the area.

As with other cenotes, you’ll get some of the same beautiful tropical and remote, mysterious aura. But there’s more to Ik Kil than that. In this article, you’ll see how you can get there, what you should do to make your trip most enjoyable, and what makes Cenote Ik Kil so uniquely beautiful.

In addition, we’ll share a tip on how to get this cenote all to yourself, in case you are interested in something fancy like an extended photoshoot (or even a proposal).

Everything to Know about Cenote Ik Kil

The Chichen Itza Pyramid from a distance, showing the great stone and green grass surrounding it.

Cenote Ik Kil is located outside Pisté in the Tinúm Municipality, Yucatán, Mexico. It is part of an archaeological park near Chichén Itzá, which you likely have seen before.

Back when Mayans lived there, this cenote was considered sacred. Archaeologists have found bones and jewelry in the deep water here, proving its significance historically to the Mayans.

At about 200 feet (60m) in diameter, and about 160 feet (50m) deep, it’s quite a drop. You will have to climb down about 85 feet (26 meters) just to reach the water from above.

We mentioned earlier that we would share what makes this cenote so appealing. See the image below, and it should become quite apparent.

The vines that reach down from the opening all the way to the water, and adjacent waterfalls give this cenote a beauty unmatched by anything you’ve ever seen before. It’s unbelievable to witness firsthand. Green leaves decorate these vines, and seeing them droop down for several meters makes it look like it was designed by human hand.

While you may not find any human bones yourself, you can still enjoy the beautiful view, cool waters, and hopefully arrive before the crowds do.

Inside the water, you’ll find some black catfish, but not much else. In addition, some have said that over the years, as this cenote has become more popular, it turned into somewhat of a mini theme park. People were not as easily impressed by the management, and it felt like less of a remote location for some. We highly recommend reading on to see how you could remedy this, but either way, keep your expectations in check if you plan to visit during a busy time of the year.

Cenote Ik Kil shown from above with the vines, trees, and stairway visible, where people are waiting with towels.

Directions to Cenote Ik Kil

If you are heading here from Valladolid, it will take about 45 minutes driving west. East from Pisté, it’s about 10 minutes. There is a large parking lot, where parking is free.

When traveling by colectivo, you can easily find one on Calle 39, and between Calle 44 and Calle 46. This will likely be more convenient, as colectivos come and go often. They will also take you straight to the cenote entrance, along with other cenotes if you’d like to make stops.

This cenote is much further inland than the others we’ve covered so far. This has a twofold effect – first, there are way less tourists willing to travel this far for one remote cenote, and second, it’s much more refreshing when the beach is not 10 minutes away.

Price of Admission

The entrance fee is only 100-150 MXN ($5-$7.50), which is quite cheap if you’ve been reading about some of the more popular cenotes (like Gran Cenote at a whopping 500 MXN).

Some users have reported that the entrance cost does not cover life jackets. However, others said that all is included, besides the lockers. Life jackets are required to enter, so keep a few extra pesos on you just in case.

There are two separate tickets as well, to make things even more complicated. The first provides a life jacket and locker, and the other provides everything above and one of five meals plus a beverage. It turns into a great lunch experience for the early afternoon or evening, if you decide to show up late.

Towels are also available for renting at 30 MXN ($1.50) but who’s trying to rent a towel? Just bring your own.

Cenote Ik Kil Tips & Tricks

ik kil tour

Here are some quick tips and tricks to improve your time at Cenote Ik Kil!

You can stick around a little after the closing time, as they are quite lenient with forcing everyone to leave.

Tour busses come and go, dropping visitors to Cenote Ik Kil in the afternoon and early evening. As with most cenotes, mornings are ideal for having more time to yourself. But if you’re looking for real privacy, there’s something even better you can do.

There is a sign, but we’ll mention it anyway. Do not touch the vines! It is very tempting, but this is not permitted.

Jumping from the very top is also not allowed. The drop is quite steep, as we said earlier. You will also not get away with it because of the security guards.

Because there isn’t a whole lot to see under the water, snorkeling is something you can skip here. Unlike other cenotes where we highly recommend it, you’re better off leaving that gear at the hotel for this one.

While not exactly a tip or trick, it’s important to mention. If you read our guide on Cenote Cristalino , you may remember there were some reports of theft. Unfortunately, there were some thieves here during a few of our followers’ visits. Someone had their slippers (imagine) taken simply seconds after leaving them unattended. It may be a misunderstanding, but it’s always best to keep your belongings locked up or with you when you’re traveling.

How to get Cenote Ik Kil to Yourself

Remember the bit about extra privacy? What some visitors have discovered is that you can book Hotel Ik Kil right next to the cenote. Once everything is closed for the day after 5:00 PM, you are free to enjoy the site on your own. You must book with them directly , though the website is in Spanish. It mentions that access to the cenote is extended from 6 PM to 8 PM, when everyone is gone.

Cenote Ik Kil Guided Tours

Due to the lack of underwater adventure here, there aren’t many guided tours available. Snorkeling and diving aren’t done here. However, there is still at least one good guided tour that will let you experience the cenote, and then some.

Chichén Itzá, Cenote Ik kil and Cobá, Reduced Group (All Fees Included)

Price: $149.00

Location: Pickup from just about any hotel in the Riviera Maya area. Some areas may have a charge of 15-20 USD for pickup.

Time: Begins at 9:00 AM, for roughly 10 hours

Description: This tour takes you to Chichén Itzá at first, then a lunch by Cenote Ik Kil where you can go swimming or simply relax. Finally, you will experience some of the great archaeological sites in the Cobá area.

An image of the of the old buildings from Mayan history, as part of the Cenote Ik Kil Tour.

Hotels Near Cenote Ik Kil

Hotels near Cenote Ik Kil are all smaller, budget hotels. The larger, more commercial hotels are closer to the beach, which may be where you end up staying. But this list is all the nearby, great quality hotels for those who want to explore the cities inland more.

As you can see, however, there are only two good hotels here (besides Hotel Ik Kil which must be booked directly). Thus, it will be best to book a guided tour that will handle the transportation and day for you.
