I have selected these 27 best travel YouTube channels from great Vloggers documenting their trips around the world. I am sure they will inspire you to travel and meet other cultures.

And if you cannot travel right now, they will surely take you to remote villages of unexplored countries and different worlds and cultures. So sit back and enjoy!

Watching traveling channels is the best way to relax after a long working day, instead of watching unreal movies or sad news, which certainly won’t help you unwind.

Many travel vloggers nowadays are amazingly talented and create spectacular videos out of their travel footage that will make you dream and travel from your couch.

Sometimes you can find travel-related fun videos on youtube that are just hilarious, and you wonder how come those people are not on the big screen. There are so many talented vloggers out there and I have watched hundreds of travel videos before creating this shortlist of the best youtube channels.

So without further ado, please find here the best travel vloggers on Youtube that will make you travel from the couch!

Please note that for navigation speed purposes I couldn’t embed the videos. But I linked them to the related image, for your convenience.

1. Sam Newton Media

Sam Newton is a young talented traveler who decided to drop out of college, buy a video camera, learn out to create amazing videos, and start to travel the world. I am sure you agree with me that he learned the craft quite well.

The way he captures the essence of every situation is mind-blowing. He creates tension and drama to make you stay glued to the videos. The amazing images make you feel as if you were right there, in the scene.

2. The Expert Vagabond – Matthew Kersten

Matthew is one of the first Bloggers who made it a real profession and made us all go for it too. He inspired me to write my first article and start my blog adventure. Of course, I am not even comparing myself to his spectacular work but I keep following him for inspiration.

His videos are breathtaking and very professional. He’s indeed one my favorites among all the travel video channels I have shared here.

This video that I have picked for you amongst the hundreds that he publishes has a special meaning to me because it has been recorded in Antarctica, a place that I am dreaming to visit, and the main character is a penguin, one of the reasons why I want to go to Antarctica, my favorite animal on earth.

This video is hilarious but although I was happy to see the penguin safe I couldn’t help but think how the human species is interfering with nature, in the good and in the bad of course.

Anyway, please watch it and let me know your thoughts.

As for me, I am working towards my goal to be in Antarctica in about 2 years. Will I make it? follow me on  Instagram  and you will know.

3. Jacob’s Laukaitis

I am so glad I have bumped into Jacob’s channel, especially for this particular video about Mexico.

I always suggest renting a car and driving around this beautiful country as I believe it is the best way to explore it. I know it can be a little scary after all the news you hear about Mexico, but I have written an extensive post about  safety in Mexico  and how it is to  drive around Mexico , which will be helpful I am sure.

Anyway, for now, just enjoy Jacob’s video on his 28 days itinerary on the road.

4. Alex the Vagabond

Alex is taking you through his favorite travel destinations for the year 2020. (let’s take it as an omen that we can get back to travel soon).

Check it out.

a couple on a beach

5. Alex and Marko from Vagabrothers

Alex and Marko are two brothers (of course) who will inspire you with the most complete videos about the places they visit.

I love their style because it’s very simple with no fancy effect but they take you right inside all the cultural aspects of the destination, the history, the food, the people, it’s like listening to an audioguide while watching the pictures.

In the video I chose for you  they are taking us to Uzbekistan but you can check out all the other amazing videos from their channel.

Now sit back and relax for the next 20 minutes with the  Vagabrothers .

6. Ryan Shirley

I just found Ryan’s videos while browsing through YouTube and I loved them. They are very detailed with useful tips and spectacular images.  I could relate to him for being a slow traveler as he spent 3 years traveling around Europe and exploring his beautiful corners. In this video that I have picked, he tells us his favorite places in Europe.

two legs hanging from a cliff overlooking a bay

7. Antoine Janssens

I love Antone’s style.

I have chosen his video on Costa Rica because I love wildlife, and the video is full of many details of the local species, portrayed in such a beautiful way. The music he uses helps create a dramatic scene that keeps you there with him. When the video is over, you feel like you want to see more. Check out the Life in the Artic video on his channel, mind-blowing.

lush tropical forest

In this exciting video, Alex Melis will take you around the world with breathtaking scenes of dreamy landscapes and adventurous trips. From snowcapped mountains to isolated waterfalls you can’t help but travel with your imagination.

Meli started to produce his videos for fun and is now a professional filmmaker. Check out his channel for more videos.

9. Tony Mcallister

I loved the way Tony portrayed Puerto Vallarta in this video. Spectacular close-ups on the local people and the city highlights, stunning time laps on sunsets, and bird eye view over the bay. This video has it all.

If you are planning a visit to Puerto Vallarta, check it out, but also you can read more on what to do and where to stay in my  Puerto Vallarta detailed guides.

a rock in the middle of the ocean

10. Mind Boggler channel

You might want to skip this one if you have a fear of heights. In case it doesn’t bother you at least to watch a video, this is a  spectacular video on the most terrifying bridges of the world.

If you are not too sensitive, the scenes are indeed spectacular and worth watching.

Also, I am glad I found out about this channel, as they have so many interesting videos about extraordinary things and places in the world. Click on the “Mind Boggler” tag to see what other videos you may like.

And you? Are you afraid of heights or would you walk on one of those tall bridges without any fear?

aerial view of a steep road

11. Benn TK

Benn makes the most creative videos ever.

Do not get misled by the beginning because in every video it seems like he speaks about motivational stuff, but it’s just a few seconds, and then it’s all about the destination’s amazing sceneries, the people and the spectacular landscapes, all put together with amazing editing skills.

He uses many effects that are very well blended together and flow with the narrative structure of the video. You will love it. I was undecided about what to pick from his amazing videos. I chose Vietnam because it’s a place where I would love to travel one day, but I suggest you check the main page of his channel and watch them all.

a girl on a bicycle in a city

12. Carlos Costa

Join Carlos and his crazy friends on their adventure in New Zealand. They will keep on the hook for the entire time. I couldn’t even breathe during the last scene. Got to check it out. Amazing videography, and now I want to go to New Zealand, maybe on a more tranquil journey.

a guy jumping on top of the mountain

13. Sailing Le Vagabond

A beautiful young couple sailing around the world on a romantic and adventurous trip.

What has started as an adventure it has now become their lifestyle. And now they even have a baby. They have amazing videos about their life on the water and the spectacular hidden gems they see. Watching their videos is like sailing away with them. Precious.

14. Mark Wiens

Mark is a travel Vlogger who loves chasing the unique culinary experience of the places he visits.

I chose this video about Pakistan because you can feel his enthusiasm for the delicious street food and the generosity of the people. His videos are genuine. He doesn’t focus on the transitions or other editing effects like many other videos that I shared.

Instead, he focuses more on the content and he takes you right inside the culture of the places he travels to.

It’s indeed one of my favorite travel Youtube channel to take virtual tours into the world.

a men stiring a huge pot of food

15. Mark Harrison

Mark is taking us on his 12-day adventure in Turkey.

I love his style because he switches between some useful information, funny real-life scene,s and spectacular scenery.

His video feels really authentic with no frills or fancy effects, but still, I believe, of professional quality.

I really enjoy it and, guess what? I want to go to Turkey right now.

a guy lookiing at air baloons

16. Luke Martin

If you love street food this is your vlog. Luke is going to take us through every sort of market and street food place in Asia and Europe.

He takes you on a journey through the local specialties, their taste, and how they are made.

Interesting to learn about local cuisine and their culture.

a lady serving food

17. The food ranger

And among the foodie travel bloggers, The Food Ranger, aka Trevor James,  is one of the most popular with almost 4 million subscribers.

In this video that I have picked, he’s showing us how they make noodles. I would have never imagined that it was such a handy job. After seeing this I am not sure I will eat noodles again. He will for sure.

Check this out

18. Eva Zu Beck

I have finally found a woman travel blogger that I really like.

She is real and passionate about the history and the cultural aspects of the amazing places that she visits as a solo traveler. She makes amazing videos without the need to show her boobs or butt. It resonates a lot with me because that’s the way I love to travel, immerse in the culture, alone among locals, and, when possible in lesser-known places.

And of course, alone. She does it in a Middle east country where for a woman traveling solo is not that easy.

I am sure you will love her videos as much as I do.

a girl and a boy in a car driving

19. Kara and Nate

One of the most popular couple vloggers with more than 1 million subscribers.

Their videos are very personal but offer a good balance between their adventures and facts, not to mention the beautiful landscapes. Drones are the best inventions.

In the video that I chose they take us to a tiny little village in Norway where they stayed in a beautiful design hotel in the middle of nowhere.

tiny houses in the mountains

20. Drew Binsky

Drew is a real storyteller, he explores the essence of the countries he visits and digs into the people’s stories.

It’s fun and interesting to watch.

His short captivating videos look more like documentary clips and I was not surprised when he announced that he will be making a 1-hour documentary that includes a few selected countries that he has visited (including Jamaica, one of my home countries).

I can’t wait to see it but in the meantime let’s watch this one that I have selected about a Jew village in Ethiopia.

group portraits picture

21. Backpacker Steve

Steve’s videos are quite straightforward and less personal than the others.

I wished he added more music, but I liked the simplicity of his narrative and the fact that he offers useful facts about the places, besides his own personal itinerary.

I am sharing his video on Cartagena because it’s one of the cities of Colombia that I have loved so much for its spectacular architecture and colonial vibe.

I am sure you will love his other videos too.

streets of cartagena colombia

22. Chris Rogers

Chris specializes in professional sports action videos, not something that all of us can relate to, but still, I wanted to share this one specifically because it includes its 2 years of traveling with spectacular effects and breathtaking transitions from one scene to the other.

You might lose some calories while watching it as it feels like you are skiing or surfing with them.

Worth watching just for that.

guys in the water

23. Sam Kold

motion pictures

This guy is an absolute genius in editing and filming.

Because you need to be good in both to be able to deliver something amazing like this video about The wall of China, but not only.

Don’t get misled by the title. He will take you around Beijing and you will explore the city with them, take cooking class, hope on a motorbike and mingle with the locals.

This video is absolutely phenomenal.

However, while I was browsing through his channel I found this other one here below which almost made me cry ( not easy). It’s the story of his life and how the loss of his brother has deeply affected him. It’s a work of art. So moving but beautiful.

“Don’t ask what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive. Because what the world needs most, is more people who come alive.” HOWARD THURMAN

24. Justin Poore

I’ve got to share this video because it’s about one of my favorite cities in Mexico and probably my future hometown.

Justin is there for only 1 day but he picked the best spots to share in his video. Check it out and fall in love with the colorful colonial Oaxaca.

Oaxaca City cathedral

25. Mr Brynnorth

Africa’s sceneries are unbeatable; you cannot go wrong.  In this video, you will see the magnificent landscapes and wildlife of Kenia portrayed beautifully by Mr. Brynnorth, whose real name I don’t know 🙂

Kenya landscape

26. Stefan Zimmerman

Welcome to the dreamlike scenery of Scotland.

If you are a fan of Outlander you will love this video, and if you are not a fan, you will love it anyway. The music is soothing and relaxing as well. There is no voice-over. So you can sit back and chill while watching the spectacular landscapes of the Island of Sky and the Highlands.

Stream These 4K Travel Videos For A Virtual Vacation

Today we should give thanks to the individuals that really like recording their walks — and/or breathtaking 4K drone escapades. It’s these people whose content is plastered all over YouTube giving people like you and I a temporary travel fix. We know it’s not the same as being there, but it’s definitely closer than a lot of other things.

Millions of travelers opted out of passport stamp collecting in 2020, but our eyes can still explore other parts of the world.

1. Namibia and Botswana

This breathtaking footage confirms what so many travelers know: there’s nothing quite as beautiful as Namibia and Botswana. Shot in 4k, the meditative visuals are spectacular, eerie, effervescent and tranquil.

2. Eight-Hour Flight Over Iceland In 4K

Iceland is one of the few countries with landscape varied enough to enjoy an eight-hour video of just that. Slow clap for the person that compiled this amazing video showing off Iceland’s wondrous wild in 4k.

3. Hanoi Walking Tour In 4K

This cozy video takes viewers through the romantic streets of charming Hanoi. The rainy Vietnamese city has a large expat community and is a gateway for travelers venturing to Ha Long Bay. President Barack Obama and Anthony Bourdain once famously dined at Bun Cha Huong Lien in Hanoi.

4. Sierra Leone Drive-Thru In 4k

Go on a quick uber ride through Sierra Leone’s streets in this surprisingly stable video tour. The approximately 30-minute YouTube journey shows a range of different areas throughout the West African city.

5. Pyramids Of Giza Educational Walk In 4k

Take a guided-walking tour through the Pyramids of Giza in 4k. Not purely for vanity, this video features important information about Giza and the seven pyramids that make up the famed monument.

6. Ben Böhmer Live Above Cappadocia in Turkey for Cercle

We stumbled across this performance by accident and were mesmerized by the production. German composer Ben Böhmer’s performance floating above Cappadocia is unlike any other live performance we’ve watched. The European house producer performed an entire set inside a hot air balloon while soaring over the picturesque Turkish region known for extraterrestrial landscape and cavern hotels.

7. Rio De Janeiro Walking Tour

A casual stroll from Rio De Janeiro’s Ipanema to Leblon neighborhoods. The walking tour features a couple of entertaining chats with locals along the way.

8. The Red Sea

One of the premiere diving destinations in the world is located off the shores of North Africa’s Egypt. Most tourists visiting Alexandria don’t get these views however. Filmed entirely underwater, this serene video will make your next shower a bit more relaxing

1. Varpet App Explainer Video

Using video to get your info seen

Mobile applications are now a big part of our lives. And companies that have a video on the App Store or Android Play Market have much better conversion.

People are lazy – they don’t want to download anything before knowing its benefits. They also don’t want to read tiny letters and descriptions from their devices.

That’s why videos work much better when they’re informative and persuade people to download your app.

The Varpet app video is a great example of that. It addresses the main pain point – too much time is wasted looking for a professional worker. Then it talks about the solution and benefits before ending on a strong call to action. It’s a classic and effective solution.

And the result? A 10-15% increase in downloads for Varpet.

Ways this video can inspire you:

  • Captivating visuals
  • Thorough explanation of benefits
  • A strong call to action
  • Result-oriented without being boring

2. Call Me Out Explainer Video

Using a Celebrity the Right Way

This video captures you instantly.

First of all, they use a fitting celebrity – Mike Tompkins .

Of course, just because a celebrity is in a commercial, that doesn’t mean it will sell your product . But the use here isn’t gratuitous, and let’s face it – Mike’s presence sells the message.

Then, in the following scene, you see amazingly executed animation with beautiful motion work and detail.

And the best part is they’re able to explain all the benefits of their app in just 30 seconds with an engaging story told by a known person. Well done!

  • Fast hook with gorgeous visuals
  • Smart use of a celebrity
  • Telling about the benefits throughout the entire story

3. Neat Streets App Explainer Video

Expensive doesn’t mean it will work, and inexpensive doesn’t mean it won’t

This 30-second explainer video is a wonderful example of spending your money wisely and still getting high value.

What I mean is, these days we see a lot of companies invest money in expensive productions and forget about the main goal of an explainer video – simplifying and explaining.

I believe this video cost around $3000 – $4000, but it does its job much better than a lot of videos that cost 10 times more. Let’s check together.

-Does it explain what the app does? Check! -Does it speak to the target audience? Check! -Is there a great hook? Check! -What about a strong call to action? Check!

Guys, spend your money wisely and remember, the main goal of an explainer video is to explain what you do and start a conversation.

  • Simple but effective
  • Results on a small budget

4. Hey You App Explainer Video

A great hook makes a great video

A promise to help people save time is a classic approach that has no expiration date – especially when it comes to keep you from wasting time in line.

This is a problem that we will always have.

Now, there are many products that promise to save time, and creating a video that stands out from the crowd is a challenge.

The solution this video uses is simple but still strong.

A captivating opening with word play and the visual metaphor of someone drowning in the sands of time hook viewers. Then comes the promise of using time in a better way – to spend time on the fun things in life.

Regardless of where the video goes next, this would at least keep you around to see what the product is, right?

  • Clever wordplay to capture attention at the beginning
  • Using visual metaphors

5. Axon Terminal

Hit viewers with triggers they aren’t even thinking about

After watching this 30-second marketing video, you may feel compelled to give them a try. Or at least have a gut feeling that this company can handle what they say they can.

As a video marketing expert , I thought for a while about what it is that works in this video. Why would I be compelled to use this, even though I live in a region that isn’t even covered by its services?

After a while, I figured it out – it’s the music.

See, it’s all about associations.

The music develops the entire atmosphere of those tough and reliable guys that handle big trucks and drive 24/7 to keep our supply chains flowing. It’s a tough guy on an empty road-ready for whatever challenge pops up.

A good, strong piece.

Ways this 30-second explainer video can inspire you:

  • The power of using the right music track

6. AllTrails Pro Explainer Video

Positivity works!

What we love about this video is that it doesn’t scare you with “bad things” that will happen if you don’t download their app.

Rather, it focuses on all the good things you’ll receive; joy, adventure, and a safe trip.

Another great conceptual choice is the main character of the video.

By using a young girl, they are making it clear and obvious that anyone can be safe with the app.

Since the question of safety is always brought up before any trip, the production company did a great job by countering potential objections.

  • Positive concept instead of a negative (using fear tactics, etc.)
  • Handling objections without being obvious about it

7. Bermuda Explainer Video

No “need”? Create one!

How do you create a need for people when it comes to luxury items ?

If you’re Bermuda, you sell the idea that luxury can be yours without the high cost of ownership.

They talk about the 2 happiest days of a boat owner’s life: buying it and selling it.

Then they let you know that you can have all the fun they aren’t having with none of the troubles, like maintenance and spending tons of money. Don’t know how to prepare it or sail it?

No problem, they’ll handle that too!

Another thing we love in this video is that there isn’t a pushy call to action. They don’t say you need to act now, or do something immediately.

They instead let you know that you can be the wise person who makes the right choice. They literally create a need for you.

What I mean is that you don’t really need this service, but the story develops a need you didn’t know you had, and a solution you suddenly realize you want!

  • Creating a need
  • Getting viewers to use their imagination and build a mental picture instead of spoon-feeding them every visual

8. Veruna Clean Animated Explainer Video

Another clever way to get people to pay attention

We always pay attention to something that’s weird or things we don’t recognize.

That stems from our very instincts to stay alive back from ancient times. Deep down, we don’t feel safe until we understand and process what it is we’re looking at.

Of course, we aren’t sitting here trembling from an animated explainer video, but the content grabs us at a subconscious level.

I’m not sure if the production company intended to create this concept for their video, but it works perfectly on social media channels when there is no sound and you need to capture a person’s attention.

Another concept that works here is that of a puzzle.

That works by triggering you to remember details when you solve a puzzle because you actively worked to assemble it.

That’s why some marketing materials make you think and you remember them so well.

  • Speaks to your instincts
  • Uses the interaction to familiarize the product to you

9. Instapay 30 Second Explainer Video

Know where video fits in your funnel

Sometimes you don’t need to dive deep to create a successful marketing message, especially in a 30 seconds explainer video.

It should be as simple as possible.

That’s what’s accomplished in this video. They just talked about the main benefits of the product in a simple manner and simple style.

No complex wording, no fancy visuals. Just a clean message.

Of course, this concept doesn’t always work, especially when you need to attract attention.

However, if you’re looking for a video to use in the later stages of your marketing funnel, it works perfectly.

If you want to learn how to use video the right way in your marketing funnel, check out this article, or schedule a free consultation with a video marketing expert.

Everyone else is doing it? Then don’t

When all the companies in your industry use the same style for their communication, the risk is high that your message will be lost in the mix.

The Guys from Coind made an effective decision because all the blockchain companies are using the same futuristic design style.

We understand the reasons, but it just isn’t effective anymore.

These guys understood that.

Our first 30 second explainer video is from the Lottie library Creattie. We chose this ad because the animators do an excellent job of understanding the audience. Creattie targets designers and web developers looking to create unique projects. As a result, the video shows how anyone can use their platform to customize designs to fit their branding and style with Creattie's built-in editor.

In just 30 seconds, viewers can see how Zluri can help them organize their SaaS application in one user-friendly dashboard.

13. 2D to 3D with Cinema 4D

We love how Cinema 4D uses tone in their 30 sec video to capture the audience's attention. The VO begins soft, speaking directly to the viewer, then switches to an upbeat and much more enthusiastic tone to showcase the service.

Accompanied by the change in tone, lively music, sound effects, and visually stunning transformations from 2d to 3D, the viewer can't take their eyes off the screen. The ad finishes by emphasizing how easy Cinema 4D is, making for a unique, memorable viewing experience.

14. Catch your Z's Melatonin Gummies

Implementing statistics is a great way to increase conversions in video advertising .

The 30 second video above uses a highly relatable stat to create urgency, a critical component in online advertising. "1 in every 3 individuals don't sleep enough" resonates with many viewers. The statistic raises awareness of the problem and is quickly followed by the advertiser's solution.

15. Semrush

Catching messaging is crucial when putting together your 30 second animation ideas. That's why we featured the Semrush.Trends ad campaign with the genius 3-word slogan – "Data. Insights. Impact."

Implementing a simple, easy-to-remember tagline that reflects your product or service is among the oldest marketing techniques . Semrush executes the strategy flawlessly and incentivizes viewers to try the product for free.

16. Retail Data with The Trade Desk

The Trade Desk delivers a fast-paced 30 second video idea with little to no waste from beginning to end.

You keep your audience entertained with an upbeat voice-over, soundtrack, and visuals. However, while The Trade Desk executes all three essential aspects of production, the video's strong point is the creative transitions. They keep the short scenes moving and viewers interested as they are walked through The Trade Desk's key selling propositions .

17. Qwqer Express

Qwqer Express demonstrates how to resonate with a large demographic when your product or service has mass appeal through character development. The 30 second explainer video features 3 types of characters facing logistical problems - a distressed senior couple, a frustrated businessman, and a new mother.

Everyone can directly relate to or knows someone who falls into these 3 categories, creating the narrative that Qwqer Express can help EVERYONE.

18. OkCupid

In highly competitive industries, like online dating apps, communicating the unique selling proposition is fundamental when curating 30 second animation ideas.

OkCupid executes by clearly identifying the questions it asks users when creating their dating profiles. They use the examples "cat or dog lover" and "religious or free thinker" to communicate to viewers how its personality prompts build comprehensive profiles and effectively match users.

19. Shopify + Aleran Software

Sometimes a 30 second explainer video isn't enough to effectively communicate how a product or service can benefit your audience. So instead of producing a longer video, Shopify presented a brief overview of the B2B platform Aleran, then directed viewers to download a free e-book covering the software extensively.

The strategy will save you production costs, and you can require a name and email for the free download and use the information for future marketing efforts.

Noom combines different animation styles to create a unique look for their 30 second video above. The technique delivers a memorable advertisement, instills branding, and centers focus on the main character.

The ad's protagonist is designed in 2D using Noom's signature red-orange branding on top of a 3-dimensional world. This choice helps the character stand out, and viewers can't help but relate to their struggles. Once the central figure shows improvement after using the Noom app, viewers have built a connection and are incentivized to take the free quiz.

Creating a 30-second explainer video can be quite cost-effective.If you're looking for something straightforward, you're likely to spend about $2,700 to $3,500. If you want a special one that stands out, with extra professional details, it can cost more - between $4,000 and $15,000. This price changes based on how complex it is, the kind of animation, and if you use special voice and  the licensing for voiceovers and music.

To make a short 30-second video that explains something, there are some important tips in this article. And the production process follows some easy steps, which we explain more about right here .

The key challenge is fitting your complete message into a tight 30-second window. It's a tougher task to weave a compelling story that's brief yet covers all bases, ensuring your core message is clearly understood.

For a 30-second video, use about 75 words. This is because in most videos, people speak at a speed of about 2.5 words every second. But to be safe, try to use no more than 70 words. This way, the video doesn't end too suddenly, and everything sounds clear.

Creating a 30-second explainer video usually takes about 4 to 5 weeks. Remember, this time doesn't count the hours you might need for any changes or for talks about different parts of the video like the storyboard or the design style.

Closing Words

Middle East latest: Israeli foreign ministry outlines 'initial price' Iran must pay for missile attacks - as Tehran warns of 'bigger' retaliation

Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said aircraft are still patrolling the skies. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden said the US military helped Israel "take down nearly all of the drones and missiles" fired by Iran.

The first direct attack on Israel by Iran has shaken Israelis and left them fearful a bigger war is looming.

Iranian weapons and interceptors could be seen flashing over the sky at night.

"I think it was quite scary when in the middle of the night we started hearing booming and we didn't know what it was, I mean we knew what it was, we didn't know to what extent it would be," said Jerusalem resident Cecile Smulowitz.

"But thank God the Israeli army came through, and so far it's quiet and we hope it would continue that way."

Some Israelis said they did not want an escalation but with the stakes so high they were nervous.

"I really hope there won't be a big war, none of us in Israel wants a big war so I hope that's it, and I hope Iran would stop now," said Jeremy Smith, 60, a resident of Tzur Hadassah.

"I imagine Israel will respond because I mean, our whole country was covered in missiles and drones. So what can you do? But we have to stop it somehow."

Jerusalem resident Amy Friedlang Morgans, 71, said: "We don't want a war with Iran, they, somehow they can't accept Jewish people living here. This is our homeland, it's written in the Bible."

Some further Israeli reaction to last night's attacks by Iran, with war cabinet minister Benny Gantz promising a response.

Mr Gantz, himself a retired army general, said that Israel would exact a price from Iran in a manner and time "that's right for us".

"Yesterday, Iran launched an attack on Israel - and met the strength of the Israeli security system," he said in a statement - just ahead of an expected war cabinet meeting.

He described Iran as a "global problem" as well as a regional challenge.

"This event is not over - the strategic alliance and the regional cooperation system that we built and stood its significant test need to be strengthened precisely now," he added.

He said that Israel had proven itself "an anchor of military and technological power" and of security in the region.

"Faced with the threat of Iran - we will build a regional coalition and collect the price from Iran, in the way and at the time that suits us," he said.

Footage released by Iranian state TV reportedly shows missiles being launched from Iran.

Some of the more than 150 cruise and ballistic missiles are shown blasting into the sky, leaving smoke trails behind.

While a military base sustained light damage, only a "handful" of the more than 300 missiles and drones made it through Israel's air defences, according to the IDF.

The Israeli foreign ministry has outlined an "initial price" it says Iran must pay for its attack.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps must be recognised as a terrorist organisation, said spokesperson Lior Haiat.

"Painful sanctions" must also be imposed on Iran, including in the field of missiles, he added.

"Israel has the right to defend itself in the face of Iran's massive attack. Israel successfully defended itself against Iran's aggression and will continue to do so in the future," read a statement.

Iran's attack on Israel, its threats issued to the US and its supply of weapons to Russia "endangers world peace", said Mr Haiat.

"This is precisely why Iran must never obtain nuclear weapons," the statement said.

Israel's air defence system is one of the most effective in the world.

The system consists of a series of truck-towed mobile units placed strategically throughout the country.

When their radars detect a threat, the information is sent to a 'battle management centre' where military personnel analyse it, anticipating its path and impact point, and decide which missile launcher to use to intercept it.

Italy, which holds the presidency at the G7, has confirmed our earlier reports that it will hold a meeting of the group this afternoon.

In a short statement, the Italian presidency website said the remote meeting would be held early this afternoon to "discuss Iran's attack against Israel".

The US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan make up the members of the Group of Seven major economies, set up in 1973.

Iran's actions, like Russia's, threaten to cause a larger conflict, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.

He called for efforts to prevent further escalation in the Middle East.

"Iran's actions threaten the entire region and the world, just as Russia's actions threaten a larger conflict.

"The obvious collaboration between the two regimes in spreading terror must face a resolute and united response from the world."

Israel will respond to Iran's attack, but the decision-makers have not come to a conclusion on the type of response, an Israeli official has told CNN.

The official said Israel has not decided whether to "break all the dishes" or take a more measured action.

Israel's war cabinet are expected to discuss the options today, the official said.

Iran informed the US that its attacks against Israel would be "limited" and for self-defence, Iran's foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian says.

He added Iran notified its neighbours of the strikes 72 hours in advance.

"We informed our friends and neighbours in the region that Iran's response against Israel was certain, legitimate, and irrevocable," Mr Amirabdollahian said at a press conference.

Two senior Arab officials say they are worried Benjamin Netanyahu could use this moment to start a wider war with Iran.

"Conventional wisdom is they won't [retaliate], but the guy sitting in power may go insane," one official told our partner network, NBC News.

The official has direct knowledge of negotiations between Israel and Hamas over Gaza and Israeli hostages.

Asked if he expected Israel would respond, the other senior official from a different regional country said: "I wouldn't be surprised if they try to do more. Bibi wants to drag us there."

Rare 4.8 magnitude quake rattles Northeast

By Elise Hammond , Leinz Vales and Matt Meyer , CNN

4.0 magnitude aftershock recorded in New Jersey, USGS says

From CNN's Brandon Miller

An aftershock of a preliminary magnitude 4.0 has struck just southwest of Gladstone, New Jersey, according to the United States Geological Survey .

It happened at about 5:59 p.m. ET, USGS said.

The aftershock comes nearly 8 hours after the main shock of 4.8 magnitude this morning. There have been at least 10 aftershocks, though most were in the 1.8 to 2.2 magnitude range.

No injuries or major damage in Northeast after morning quake in New Jersey. What to know to get caught up

From CNN staff

Residents and police gather outside of Newark, New Jersey, homes that were structurally damaged and had to be evacuated after an earthquake Friday.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattled buildings across parts of the US Northeast on Friday morning, according to the US Geological Survey, with tremors felt from Washington, DC to New York City and to Maine.

It was the third-largest earthquake recorded in the area in the last five decades and the strongest in New Jersey i n more than 240 years , the USGS said. But with authorities reporting little or no damage, and minimal travel disruptions, people soon resumed their everyday lives.

Here's what to know:

  • New Jersey: Gov. Phil Murphy said there are limited reports of damage and "little to no injuries" in the state. The USGS recorded at least six aftershocks in the immediate area of the initial earthquake. In an area more than 30 miles from the epicenter, three neighboring homes in Newark were evacuated after residents reported structural damage, according to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé.
  • New York: Gov. Kathy Hochul said there were no "life-threatening situations" after the earthquake and no reports of damaged buildings . There was one report of a gas line leak, but so far there's no “major” infrastructure impact, state officials said . New York City Mayor Eric Adams also said there have not been any reports of injuries and told people to " go about their normal day ." Additionally, all aspects of the New York City transit system were operating safely, said Metropolitan Transport Authority CEO Janno Lieber.
  • Philadelphia: The Philadelphia Police Department received "over 200 calls" from 911 "in a very short period of 20 minutes," following the earthquake, according to Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel. But, there were no injuries reported in the city, Mayor Cherelle L. Parker said.
  • Connecticut: State officials did not report any significant damage. Emergency management officials said their operations center was partially activated as agencies inspected key infrastructure points.
  • Travel: Runways at the three main airports servicing the New York City area were inspected and cleared, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Port Authority also said there were no operational or physical impacts to the bridges and tunnels. Amtrak said its trains were r unning at normal speeds after restrictions were put in place for track inspections.
  • Widespread impact: The shaking was felt by millions of people across hundreds of miles of the Northeast — a phenomenon made more likely by a few factors, including the geology of the region itself, according to the USGS. Rocks in the eastern US are much older, denser and harder, making them more efficient conduits of the seismic energy released by an earthquake, allowing it to travel in a more potent form over longer distances, the USGS says.

Amtrak trains resume running at normal speeds

From CNN's Pete Muntean

Amtrak trains are back to operating at normal speeds after an earthquake in New Jersey on Friday, the company said.

It said it started inspecting its tracks shortly after 11 a.m. ET, and put speed restrictions in place throughout the region. Amtrak said it has now completed those inspections.

“As of 3:30 PM ET, All inspections have been completed and service has been restored to normal speed. Residual delays should be expected,” Amtrak  posted  on X.

At least 6 aftershocks recorded following New Jersey earthquake, USGS reports

From CNN’s Samantha Beech, Brandon Miller and Taylor Ward

There have been at least six aftershocks in the hours following the New Jersey earthquake Friday morning, according to United States Geological Survey data.

The initial earthquake was felt in northern New Jersey just before 10:30 a.m. ET, and the aftershocks were all recorded in the immediate area of the earthquake, USGS said.

According to USGS, the largest of the six aftershocks was 2.2 magnitude, recorded just after 1:30 p.m. ET.

Here's a timeline (all times are ET):

  • 10:23 a.m.: The initial 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurred
  • 11:20 a.m.: 2.0 magnitude aftershock
  • 11:37 a.m.: 1.8 magnitude aftershock
  • 11:49 a.m.: 2.0 magnitude aftershock
  • 12:31 p.m.: 1.8 magnitude aftershock
  • 1:14 p.m.: 2.0 magnitude aftershock
  • 1:32 p.m.: 2.2 magnitude aftershock

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a social media post that "aftershocks of these size are normal and are not expected to cause further damage."

The governor said there have been no reports of injuries or damage.

See how people in the Northeast reacted when the earthquake hit

From CNN's Jeremy Moorhead and Sean Clark

When an earthquake rattled buildings across the Northeast Friday morning, stunned residents described initially thinking a passing tractor-trailer or freight train was passing them before they realized it was something more.

There were reports of the 4.8 magnitude quake being felt from Philadelphia to New York City, according to the US Geological Survey.

See how some people reacted:

3 neighboring homes in New Jersey evacuated after reporting structural damage, offical says

From CNN’s Nic F. Anderson and David Goldman

Three neighboring homes in Newark, New Jersey, have been evacuated after residents reported structural damage following this morning’s earthquake, according to the local public safety director.

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé told CNN no injuries have been reported after firefighters responded to reports of damage at the homes in an area more than 30 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter.

He said 10 families were relocated from the buildings, including 25 adults and three children.

Fragé added that all Newark city buildings, including City Hall and recreation centers, are closed. He said the city is inspecting buildings for any potential damage and power outages.

Also in New Jersey’s Essex County, in Montclair, officials believe the earthquake caused a water main break, according to an update from the Office of Emergency Management for the Township of Montclair. The OEM said the water bureau is working to repair the line.

The Montclair OEM said authorities have conducted a damage assessment of the township and there are no signs of damage to the infrastructure and all schools and municipal properties report no damage.

Today's earthquake was the strongest in New Jersey in more than 240 years

From CNN's Elliana Hebert, Sara Tonks and Eric Zerkel

First responders arrive to inspect homes in Lebanon, New Jersey, on Friday.

The rare 4.8 earthquake that struck northern New Jersey Friday was the third-strongest to strike the state, according to CNN analysis of US Geological Survey data.

The Friday morning earthquake also marked the strongest since 1783, more than 240 years ago. Two 5.1 magnitude temblors are the only stronger quakes in the state — one in 1755 and another in 1783. Both happened before New Jersey became a state in December 1787, but happened in the geographic area that now comprises the state's boundaries.

The quake is the third-strongest to hit the Northeast in 50 years and the 10th-strongest of all time in the region, USGS data shows.

Earthquakes in New Jersey and the region are rare. There have only been 24 earthquakes of 2.5 magnitude or greater in New Jersey since 1700.

All aspects of New York City transit system operating safely after earthquake, MTA chief says

From CNN's Samantha Beech

All aspects of the New York City transit system are operating safely following this morning’s earthquake, the Metropolitan Transport Authority, which runs the city's subway and other forms of public transit, said.

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said every part of the transit system operated safely during the earthquake, as well.

He said initial facility inspections have been completed, including inspections of the seven bridges the MTA operate.

“I want to emphasize those were designed to withstand much stronger seismic impact than we experienced today,” he added.

According to the  MTA website , MTA Bridges and Tunnels (B&T) serves more than 900,000 vehicles on an average day. In 2019, it carried more traffic than any bridge and tunnel authority in the nation — more than 329 million vehicles, the MTA says.

Lieber said MTA frontline staff have been directed to report any abnormalities in the system, but he said nothing had been flagged so far.

There's a low likelihood of aftershocks following today's quake, New York City's emergency chief says

New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zachary Iscol speaks at news conference at the New York City Emergency Management Department on Friday in New York.

There is a low likelihood of aftershocks following Friday's 4.8 magnitude earthquake that rattled several Northeast cities, New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zachary Iscol said.

Iscol, however, urged New Yorkers to remain vigilant.

“If you are outside during an aftershock, please move to an open area, away from buildings, trees and power lines. If you are driving, pull over to a safe location," he said at a news conference Friday alongside New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Iscol said there were no major impacts or safety events related to the earthquake, and added that New Yorkers can call 311 to report any damage.

The quake, he said, triggered the activation of the city's emergency response teams and prompted officials to issue guidance to the public.

“We activated our protocols for this earthquake, we immediately began coordinating with all city, state, federal and our utility partners. Public notifications were sent out both by Notify NYC and our wireless emergency alert system,” he said.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2024 and how is it celebrated?

The three-day festival celebrates the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan by Muslims across the world.

Interactive_Eid_2024_outside image

As a new moon was not sighted on Monday evening after Maghrib prayers, Muslims in Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries will fast one more day, completing 30 days of Ramadan. The first day of Eid will then be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10.

The first day of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon marking the start of the month of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.

How do Muslims celebrate Eid?

Traditionally, Eid is celebrated for three days as an official holiday in Muslim-majority countries. However, the number of holiday days varies by country.

Muslims begin Eid day celebrations by partaking in a prayer service that takes place shortly after dawn, followed by a short sermon.

On their way to the prayer, which is traditionally held in an open area, Muslims recite takbeerat, praising God by saying “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “God is great”.

It is customary to eat something sweet before the prayer, such as date -filled biscuits known as maamoul in the Middle East. This particular festival is known as the “sweet” Eid – and the distribution of sweets is common across the Muslim world.

Muslims usually spend the day visiting relatives and neighbours and accepting sweets as they move around from house to house.

Each country has traditional desserts and sweets that are prepared before Eid or on the morning of the first day.

Eid amid the onslaught in Gaza

For some 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza this Eid, this will be the first Muslim religious holiday after more than 33,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks. With little food aid, and very limited water, Gaza’s Eid al-Fitr will be mired in destruction amid the continuing attacks.
