The Lysefjord

The 42-kilometre-long Lysefjord is located in Ryfylke in the county of Rogaland, about 300 km south of Bergen and about 25 km east of Stavanger. An excellent way to discover the fjord is by car.   The National Tourist Route Ryfylke starts at the mouth of the Lysefjord in Ryfylke. 

The Pulpit Rock and Kjerag plateau

The Lysefjord was carved out and shaped by glaciers during the ice ages. The Pulpit Rock and Kjerag are both internationally renowned tourist destinations. Hundreds of thousands visit the attractions every, and many visitors take the option to hike to the beautiful viewpoints of Pulpit Rock and Kjerag plateau.

Another good way to explore the fjord is to join one of the organised cruises. How to go to Lysefjord?

When it comes to visiting Lysefjord, taking a tour is often the best option. Guided tours provide convenience and expertise, ensuring you don’t miss out on any of the highlights. Many tours from Stavanger offer transportation, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the scenic journey while an experienced guide shares interesting facts about the fjord and its surroundings.

Best Tours to Lyseflord from Stavanger

If you prefer a more independent adventure, renting a car is a great way to go. From Stavanger, you can rent a car and head northeast on Route E39. Follow the signs towards Lysebotn, the main entry point to Lysefjord. The drive takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on the traffic and the stops you make. But make sure that you do make stops to enjoy the views as you navigate through the winding roads.

Take a ferry.

Another option to reach Lysefjord is by taking a ferry. From Stavanger, you can catch a ferry to Lysebotn, which is located at the eastern end of the fjord. The ferry ride offers incredible scenery, passing through narrow fjord passages and towering cliffs. The journey takes around 2 hours, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the beauty of Lysefjord from the water.

Where to stay

You can choose one of the following towns as a base to explore Lysefjord. They all provide easy access to the fjords and proximity to its natural attractions:

The Lysefjord

The Lysefjord is the southernmost of the biggest fjords in Norway. The 40-kilometre-long fjord is flanked by steep mountains, some more than 1,000 meters.

The Lysefjord is not only long and narrow, it is in places as deep as the mountains are high! Only 13 metres (43 feet) deep where it meets the sea near Stavanger, the Lysefjord drops to a depth of over 400 metres (1,300 feet) below the famous Pulpit Rock.

The two most well-known sights in the Lysefjord are the Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen) and Mount Kjerag.  The Pulpit Rock is located in Forsand municipality and towers 604 metres on the northern side of the Lysefjord. 

Mount Kjerag is located on the southern side of the Lysefjord in Rogaland. On the western part of the plateau there is a 5 m³ boulder, wedged in a crevice 1,000 metres above the fjord.

The Lysefjord Sightseeing Cruise from Stavanger

Find out what to expect on the three-hour sightseeing cruise of Norway's Lysefjord.

Looking for something to do in Stavanger? Many people love to hike in the surrounding areas. But if you're not a fan of hiking, you could do a lot worse than join a sightseeing cruise to the Lysefjord.

That's exactly what I did earlier this summer. The reason was simple. The Lysefjord was the last one of the main Norwegian fjords that I had yet to see. As it's one of the major tourist attractions in south-west Norway, I had to put that right!

A quick web search later and I'd booked a trip to the Lysefjord. With my smartphone in tow, I took plenty of videos and photos to share with you.

Introducing the Lysefjord

The southernmost fjord in western Norway's fjord region, the Lysefjord is known for its hiking opportunities within a relatively short distance of Stavanger—about 25km away.

Located in the Ryfylke area of Rogaland county, the Lysefjord is 42 km long. Its name—which means light fjord in Norwegian—is believed to have come from the light-granite rock lining both sides of the fjord.

The ferry was simple to find in the centre of Stavanger . Pick up a map at the tourist information office or online when you book a ticket if you're unsure.

While I was a little reluctant to join a packed cruise during the restrictions of 2021, I needn't have worried. Capacity was lowered because of Norway's restrictions so there was plenty of room onboard.

As you'll see from the video and images, there's a large indoor section with comfortable seating. A small kiosk sells coffee, snacks and even beer and wine. And yes, there are several bathrooms on board.

There's several outdoor spaces, notably a large deck to the rear of the ship, an open area at the top, and a smaller deck at the front.

The ship was well designed for Norway's weather conditions with large windows and even some windowed shelter on the main outdoor deck.

The journey to the Lysefjord

It took around one hour to get to the fjord itself. That was plenty of time to buy a snack from the kiosk—a coffee and Kvikk Lunsj of course—but there was also plenty to see on the way.

The ferry takes a scenic route and passes close to islands. Occasional commentary in English, Norwegian and German provided insight into the small coastal communities we passed.

This helped pass the time and when we arrived at the Lysefjord it was hard to believe we had already travelled so far.

Highlights on the Lysefjord

Lysefjord bridge . It's impossible to miss the entrance to the fjord. This impressive bridge marks the entrance and is the only way to cross the fjord by car.

Vagabonds cove . I didn't quite catch all of the story, but this attractive cove apparently got its name as the hiding place for a couple of traders trying to escape paying their taxes!

Goats . The highlight for the younger members of the cruise—and plenty of the older ones too—was this small family of mountain goats.

They are very familiar with the vessel and can be relied upon to come and say hello, receiving food from the crew.

Preikestolen . Known in English as the Pulpit Rock , Preikestolen is one of Norway's most famous sights. However, it takes about four hours to hike there and back!

From the fjord, passengers get a very different view of the famous clifftop. It's hardly the same as seeing it from the top, but it does give you some fascinating perspective. It looks so small!

Hengjane waterfall . Pouring down the side of the fjord from a height of 400 metres, Hengjanefossen is a spectacular sight. It also marks the turnaround point for the cruise.

The return trip to Stavanger is more direct and so I'd recommend bringing a book or something similar to keep you occupied. While there is onboard Wi-Fi, it's not especially fast or stable.

Practical matters

At the time of writing, this Lysefjord sightseeing cruise operated by Rodne cost NOK 580 for adults. Tickets for children under 16 cost NOK 320, while under 4s go free. A family ticket for up to 2 adults and 4 children costs NOK 1600.

Booking tickets online is the best way to ensure your place. You can also buy tickets in person before boarding, as long as there are spaces left.

Rodne offers several fjord trips, including some that drop off hikers and/or pick them up later in the day. They do have different departure times, but even so, be sure to book the correct one!

When to Visit

The best time to visit Lysefjord in Norway largely depends on your preferences for weather, activities, and the type of experience you're seeking. Here are some considerations for different seasons:

Summer (June to August): Summer is the most popular time to visit Lysefjord due to the milder temperatures and longer days. The weather is relatively comfortable, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). This is an ideal time for hiking, boat cruises, and other outdoor activities. Keep in mind that summer is also the peak tourist season, so popular sites may be more crowded.

Spring (May to June) and Fall (September to October): Spring and fall offer a balance between fewer tourists and reasonably good weather. During these seasons, you can experience the beauty of blooming flowers in spring or the changing colors of autumn. Temperatures can vary, but you can generally expect cooler weather compared to summer.

Winter (November to March): Winter in Lysefjord can be a magical experience, especially if you enjoy a snowy landscape. While boat tours may be less frequent, the area transforms into a winter wonderland. If you're a fan of winter sports like skiing or simply want to experience the fjord in a quieter setting, visiting during the winter months can be a unique and serene experience. Keep in mind that some hiking trails may be closed or challenging due to snow and ice.

Getting Into

The Lysefjord is quite secluded with road (523) reaching the western part and the scenic FV500 road reaching the end of the fjord at Lysebotn. Most travel to the Lysefjord for a day trip to either hike the Pulpit Rock, Kjeragbolten, and/or do a fjord cruise, and keep the nearby town of Stavanger as their base.

Bus: The Company Go Fjords has an Express-bus taking you to Øygardsstøl, for those who want to hike up to Kjeragbolten (The Kjerag Boulder). They also offer a bus that takes you to the starting point of the hiking trail for Preikestolen (The Pulpit Rock).

Ferry: Lysefjorden 365 is a ferry company with several options for cruising on the Lysefjord. Their ferries stop at several of the main docks throughout the fjord. Rødne has a ferry heading to Flørli, where you can climb the Flørli stairs. Go Fjords operates a summer fjord cruise with one of their ferries.

Car: There are plenty of parking spots along the fjord where you can start various hikes. Find the Preikestolen parking here and the Kjerag parking here . The drive on FV550 to Lysebotn is a scenic and winding road which can be a fun experience. Rent a car in Norway here.

Places to Stay

Most who visit the lysefjord will end up staying in Stavanger (see my guide for Stavanger), but if you’d like to stay in the fjord area closer to nature there are a few options.

The Gøysa Farm is located at the west end of the Lysefjord in the small village of Forsand. It’s a family friendly place with their own playground and there is a grill you can use for cooking. The scenery is beautiful here and the area is great for biking trips.

If you plan on hiking the Pulpit Rock and want to stay nearby the hiking trail, then you could spend a couple of nights at the Hikers Camp which is part of the Pulpit Rock basecamp. Accommodations are small solid tent-like structures and you need to bring your own sleeping bag.

Further inside the fjord is the Flørli 4444 hostel which is a basic, but great option for staying deep inside the fjord and have easy access to the 4,444 steps (hence the hostel name) taking you up the mountain side with great views of the fjord.

If you are looking for some luxury accommodation, head to the Bolder Lodge nearby the Pulpit Rock. This place was designed by the architecture firm Snøhetta (designed the Opera House in Oslo) and is a architectural gem located high above the fjord.

Note that prices for hotels highly fluctuate throughout the year, and if you book early you can sometimes find good deals! The high season in Norway goes from June to August.

Places to Eat

Many end up renting a place with a kitchen and do some of their own cooking, and pack big lunches suited for long hikes.

You can find some restaurants/cafés in either Jørpeland , Flørli or Lysebotn .

Lysefjord is known for offering a range of outdoor activities and breathtaking natural attractions.

Here are some of my favorite things to do in and around Lysefjord:

Fjord cruises

The Lysefjord is surrounded by steep dramatic mountain sides, which makes it ideal for fjord cruises. Starting in Stavanger, you can join the Rødne Lysefjord Cruise which makes three stops along the way, including below the Pulpit Rock. The silent electric ferry makes this a very enjoyable cruise.

For another type of cruise take a guided kayak-tour bringing you close to wildlife and the scenery.

Lysefjorden offers a lot of possibilities for hiking, but there are three hikes that are particularly popular. The most well-known being the hike up to Preikestolen (The Pulpit Rock). To hike up is moderately-demanding and you can expect the hike to be about 4-5 hours round-trip. It’s advisable to be well-equipped with good shoes, hiking clothes, and something warm and waterproof. The second most famous hike is up to Kjeragbolten (The Kjerag Boulder). This is basically a big boulder jammed in between two mountain sides. Being able to stand on top of the boulder makes for some very memorable photos. In addition to that, it’s a great hike which I can highly recommend. The hike is a bit longer (6-10 hours) than the Pulpit Rock and you should be in a fairly good condition to enjoy it. Check out the page of Visit Norway for more information on this hike .

A third hike goes up the 4444 stairs of Flørli. The stairs follow next to the two water pipelines and the rails where a trolley used to transport people and materials up and down the mountain. This is a fairly easy 3-4 hour hike , and you can find more information here .

How to Get Around

Public transportation.

The Lysefjord has road access to the west and east (end) part, and there are several ferry companies connecting smaller villages along the fjord. Most who explore the Lysefjord end up staying in Stavanger, and do day trips from there.

Visit the “light fjord”, which is said to be derived from the light coloured granite rocks along its sides.

Located just a day trip from Stavanger is the beautiful Lysefjord . The name translates to “light fjord” and is said to be derived from the light coloured granite rocks along its sides. End to end, it measures 42 km (26 mi) with rocky walls falling nearly vertically over 1,000 metres (3,000 ft) into the water.

As well as the unbeatable scenery of the fjord itself, there are a few notable attractions along its length: Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock , an impressive cliff towering 604 metres (1,981 ft) over the fjord; Kjerag Mountain , a popular hiking and base jumping destination with spectacular drops from its 1,084 metres (3,556 ft) top; and the 400 metre (1,312 ft) Hengjanefossen Waterfall.

Because of its rugged terrain, the Lysefjord is sparsely populated with just two villages—Forsand and Lysebotn—and the few people who do live here travel mainly by ferry, as the slopes are too steep for roads. The exception is Lysebotn, where an impressive mountain road rises almost 900 m (2700 feet) over a series of 27 hairpin bends and one spiralling road tunnel. Near the top is the “Eagle's Nest” (Øygardstøl), a rest area with cafe and trailhead for the 5-6 hour hike to Kjerag.

Hike around Lysefjorden

One of Norway’s most spectacular multi-day hiking trails. World-reknown Preikestolen, Kjerag, and Flørli are all located along the Lysefjord in Ryfylke.

Lysefjorden Rundt is one of the country's most spectacular SignaTURes. World-renowned landmarks such as Preikestolen, Kjerag, and Flørli are all located along the route in Ryfylke.

The trail covers over 100 kilometers and is divided into 8 stages. The 42-kilometer-long Lysefjorden offers a wide range of well-known and lesser-known mountain formations and viewpoints.

The path takes you from fjords to mountains multiple times, passing by old mountain farms, abandoned hydroelectric towns, mountain lakes, ravines, and cliffs. You will traverse smooth-sculpted bedrock and lush forests. In addition to the stunning nature, you can discover many cultural and historical treasures.

Lysefjorden Rundt is signposted and marked in collaboration with Stavanger Turistforening and local landowners. The terrain and trail can be challenging at times.

Remember, you don't have to complete the entire Lysefjorden Rundt in one go! Feel free to collect different stages and come back multiple times. Along the way, you can stay overnight in various types of cabins and tourist accommodations.

The following is the recommended route, but you can also hike in the opposite direction:

Stage 1: Vinddalen – Skåpet Easy – 3.5 km There is no public transport to Vinddalen, so you have to arrange your own transportation. The first part of the hike follows a well-marked trail winding through trees and stones into the pine forest. It continues on a partially paved path, crossing marshes and sparse birch forests until reaching Skåpet. The design cabins operated by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) serve as the gateway to the trail network in the Frafjord Mountains on the south side of Lysefjorden.

Stage 2: Skåpet – Flørli Challenging – 10 km Follow the historic "Svenskaveien" through rocky terrain and a wild valley. This stage offers diverse nature, taking you from the high mountains back to the treeline and all the way down to Lysefjorden and the idyllic hydroelectric village of Flørli.

Stage 3: Flørli – Langavatn Very challenging – 17 km The hike starts with a brisk climb of 4,444 steps from Flørli to Ternevatnet, about 2 km from the fjord to the summit. According to CNN, the staircase is among the most terrifying in the world. Take it easy, turn around, and enjoy the view of Lysefjorden and Flørli frequently! You will continue on steep smooth rocks and undulating high mountain terrain, passing through small mountain birch forests, along idyllic lakes, and through impressive moraine landscapes. Be prepared for significant elevation changes.

Stage 4: Langavatn – Kjerag – Lysebotn Challenging – 13 km From Langavatn, the hike initially crosses smooth-sculpted bedrock before reaching the edge of Frafjordheiane, offering extensive views in all directions. One of the highlights along this stage is Kjeragbolten, a boulder wedged between two cliffs at an altitude of 984 meters. Standing on the boulder itself provides a thrilling adrenaline rush. The route continues on flat, smooth-sculpted bedrock along the edge of Lysefjorden. Then, it goes up and down two ridges before descending to Øygardstølen. From here, you can hike or take a bus or taxi to the charming village of Lysebotn, where you can enjoy a three-course meal, take a refreshing shower, and sleep in a comfortable bed.

Stage 5: Lysebotn – Songedalen Fjellgard Challenging – 24 km From Lysebotn, a spectacular construction road leads up to Fyljesdalen, offering views of Lysedalen, the Kjerag massif, and Fyljesdalen, where an English glider crashed during Operation Freshman in 1942. The trail continues through Songedalen on an easy gravel path. At the unique Songedalen Fjellgard, you can experience Lysefjorden's coolest outdoor toilet, a genuine throne!

Stage 6: Songedalen Fjellgard – Bakken Gård Moderate – 10 km This stage follows historical roads past charming farms along the shores of Lysefjorden. Follow the Dalaåna River from the mountains all the way to the fjord at Songesand. Eventually, the river flows through a spectacular canyon-like valley. If coming from the east, you'll have a view of the fjord, Neverdalsfjellet, and Preikestolen in the distance throughout the day. From Songesand, the trail traverses the coastal rocks, crosses a challenging rocky landscape, and ascends a steep slope to Bakken. End your day with homemade pizza from the wood-fired pizza oven at the newly renovated Bakken Gard. The tourist cabin used to be the home of the legendary Pilt-Ola, a hiking legend of Lysefjorden.

Stage 7: Bakken Gård – Preikestolen BaseCamp Challenging – 16 km This demanding stage, with some scrambling sections, features several highlights. From "Hoppet," you can see the entire Lysefjorden. The trail passes the spectacular Hengjanenibbå and the legendary Hengjanegården.

Stage 8: Preikestolen BaseCamp – Høllesliheia Challenging – 10 km This stage will take your breath away! After the beautiful Revsvatnet and a passage through dense forest, you reach Lysefjorden. The hike closely follows the fjord for 75% of the time, passing several hundred meters above the sea, along various cliffs and ravines, including Skjerajuvet and Fantahålå, and through magnificent nature with countless panoramic viewpoints. Don't miss the cool "Fantapytten" – Lysefjorden's eternal pool, located approximately midway between Preikestolen BaseCamp and Høllesliheia.

3 ways to experience the Lysefjord

On a fjord cruise 

This is definitely the most relaxing and comfortable way to see the fjord.

Departing from the harbor of Stavanger, you can admire the fjord and its attractions from the comfort of a boat, either through panoramic windows or on the sundeck. Among others the cruise takes you by the mysterious Fantahålå (Vagabond’s Cave) and up close to the Hengjane Falls. The highlight of the tour is of course the view of the world famous Preikestolen from below.

The Kjerag boulder, also known as the Kjerag bolt or Kjeragbolten is a popular tourist attraction and a base jumper’s paradise. 

A bus will bring you from Stavanger to Øygardstøl, the starting point of the spectacular hike up to Kjerag, also known as the Kjerag bolt or Kjeragbolten. The hike is challenging, but the spectacular views of the Lysefjord is worth the sweat. The Kjerag Boulder sits wedged in a mountain crevice suspended nearly 1,000 m (3280 ft) above the fjord. The most daring hikers take the leap out onto the rock to get the famous shot almost 1,000 meters (3280 ft) above the fjord. You have 6 hours to complete the hike. When you’re down safe and sound, the bus drives you back to Stavanger. 

PS: make sure to check the weather condition and dress in proper hiking gear. Bring extra layers and plenty of food and drinks.

Express bus from Stavanger

This is one of the most popular hiking destinations in all of Norway.

From central Stavanger a coach bus whisks you right to the start of the hike to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) in an hour or less. On the way you get to ride through the world’s newest and longest subsea tunnel. The hike up to Preikestolen is challenging, so make sure you’re prepared. Parts of the trail have beautiful granite stairways engineered by Nepalese Sherpas. 

The Preikestolen plateau measures 25 X 25 meters (ft. 82 by 82), and offers some incredible fjord views from 604 meters (1975 ft) above. Round-trip the hike takes between 4 and 5 hours. At the end you can kick back in the bus seat, swipe through your shots and digest the hike view and hike while the bus takes you back to town.

PS: Always check the weather conditions so that you can dress according to the forecast. Proper hiking boots are a must, as well as a daypack with plenty of food and drinks.
