Getting to Liverpool

Liverpool is really well connected by road, train, bus and air,

Driving into Liverpool

Liverpool is easily accessed from all around the country via the M6 . As you get close to Liverpool, be sure to take the Mersey Flow Liverpool Toll Bridge to help make your entry into Liverpool quicker, just don’t forget to pay online afterwards.

There are plenty of car parks in Liverpool , especially Q Parks so you’ll find somewhere central to park in the city no problem, just note that the city centre parking isn’t cheap!

Train into Liverpool

Liverpool has 2 central train stations – Liverpool Central and Liverpool Lime Street . Getting the train will help you start your Liverpool city break with ease as you’ll arrive right in the city centre.

I always use The Train Line to check train timetables and make my bookings.

Check out trains to Liverpool on The Train Line here!

Bus into Liverpool

Liverpool is well connected by bus and if you’re looking to do a Liverpool trip from London on a budget, getting the bus is the best option!

All buses whether they are local buses or national buses will go to Liverpool One which is the city centre.

Flying into Liverpool

Liverpool also has an airport . It’s not as big as nearby Manchester Airport but many European flights do land here and it’s just 30 minutes from the city centre with a regular Airport to City bus schedule .

If you are visiting Liverpool from overseas, instead of looking into flying into London and then travelling up to Liverpool, I suggest checking flights into Liverpool , or Manchester!

Check out flights to Liverpool on Skyscanner here!

Getting Around Liverpool

Liverpool is a very compact and walkable city so for your day trip to Liverpool you will be fine walking everywhere and won’t need to work out any public transport once in the city centre.

Liverpool Sightseeing Bus

If you have difficulties walking far, or your time in Liverpool is very limited, I do suggest booking a hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus tour .

I saw many of these buses driving around on my day in Liverpool recently and they are a great way to see the top Liverpool attractions whilst taking it easy and not needing to walk far.

This Beatles sightseeing bus is particularly popular too!

A Day in Liverpool

Ok now let’s get into ways to spend a day in Liverpool and how to visit Liverpool in one day.

Remember, I’m going to give you a few different options as you can’t do everything in Liverpool in 1 day so you can decide what attracts you most to Liverpool, whether it be the football, music, shopping, the docks and focus your Liverpool one day itinerary around this.

One Day Liverpool Itinerary

As with all day trips, the earlier you get to Liverpool the better so you can spend a full one day there!

Morning – Breakfast in a cool cafe

There are so many places to get a great breakfast or brunch in Liverpool and don’t think of this as wasting part of your day in Liverpool because going to one of these cafes or restaurants is bound to give you a good feel for the city.

One day in Liverpool, Avocado on toast at Bold Street Coffee

I went to Bold Street Coffee on Bold Street for my recent breakfast in Liverpool and I loved the vibe, especially on a weekday.

Here are more breakfast and brunch places to visit in Liverpool !

One day in Liverpool, Bold Street Coffee Liverpool from the outside

Morning – Start with a Football Tour

If you’re coming to Liverpool for football, you can book a tour of Anfield Stadium and they start at 10:00 am so visiting as you arrive in Liverpool is a great idea (especially if you are driving to Liverpool).

As with all football stadium tours, they have to work around the matches so check in advance if the day you plan to travel to Liverpool has football stadium tours and availability.

All Anfield Stadium Tours and activities:

If you’re not into football or not a Liverpool fan, I did a tour of Old Trafford stadium tour in Manchester and even though I’m not a big football fan, it was really great to see the stadium with no one else there and access parts you can only visit on a tour like the changing rooms!

Mid-morning – Royal Albert Docks

The benefit of visiting a city like Liverpool for one day over a city like Manchester is that you can go to the Liverpool Docks, see the iconic red brick and red pillar buildings and straight away feel like you’ve been to Liverpool and this place is so famous !

One day in Liverpool, Royal Albert Docks

The first place I recommend you visit in Liverpool is t he Royal Albert Docks . There are plenty of places to get coffee and food here as well so you could start your day in Liverpool here.

Rough Hand Made is a bakery I recommend, they make fresh pastries and bread onsite on the day and are right on the water. It is best to go early to get more options.

One day in Liverpool, pastries from Rough Hand Made Liverpool

Museums in Royal Albert Dock

There are a number of great museums in Liverpool to visit and many are just a few minutes from each other around Albert Docks:

  • Maritime Museum
  • Tate Liverpool
  • The Beatles Story Exhibition / Museum
  • British Museum Experience

One day in Liverpool, Museum of Liverpool

Mid-Morning – Mersey Ferry Boat Cruise

Going on a Mersey Ferry Cruise is one of the best things to do in Liverpool and it makes sense to go during your one day in Liverpool whilst you are exploring the docks as this is where it departs from.

The terminal is located next to the Museum of Liverpool and ferries run pretty much every hour on the hour.

I do recommend booking a ticket in advance , especially on the weekend and you can buy tickets online here for the same price as in the terminal. You don’t pre-book a set time either, just a ticket to use any time that day.

One day in Liverpool, Mersey Ferry on the water

I recommend getting to the terminal 20 minutes before the next scheduled departure because it does get busy and it’s first come first on the next ferry departure.

The River Cruise is 50 minutes , it takes you over to the Seacombe ferry terminal first which is the side of the Wirral and you can disembark here for a bit if you want.

If you are on looking for things to do in Liverpool with children , Eureka Science Museum aimed at children is next to Seacombe Port and a good place to visit whilst on your day trip to Liverpool with kids.

But, with just 1 day in Liverpool, it might be best to stay onboard and enjoy the views of the River Mersey and Liverpool City for 50 minutes.

The easiest way to book your Liverpool sightseeing tickets in advance:

One day in Liverpool, Mersey Ferry view of Liverpool City

Lunch Option – On the Docks

There are lots of places to get lunch at the Royal Albert Docks , there are food vans and cafes attached to the museums and the river ferry port for a quick and easy lunch.

One day in Liverpool, Food trucks on the docks

Lunch Option – Duke Street Food Market

But, if you can wait, after the Docks, head into Liverpool One a few minutes walk away and go to Duke Street Food Market .

One day in Liverpool, inside Duke Street Food Market

There are a few street food markets in Liverpool, Baltic Market is another popular one but Baltic Market is a bit further out of the city centre and only open in the evenings so it doesn’t work well for a day trip to Manchester, hence my recommendation for Duke Street Food Market.

Duke Street Food Market offers 6-7 restaurants of different cuisines to order from but everyone sits together in the middle.

One day in Liverpool, Sushi from Duke Street Food Market

Lunch Option – Water Street

Another option for lunch in Liverpool is on Water Street which is also close to the Docks. Water Street is one of the famous streets in Liverpool for films being shot here .

There are many places to eat in Liverpool on Water Street , mainly chain restaurants and the ones I recommend are Mowgli Street Food and Rudy’s Pizza .

After visiting Water Street, don’t leave without finding Queens Ave on the attached street. This is a small arcade which is beautiful and easily one of the hidden gems in Liverpool !

One day in Liverpool, view of Water Street Liverpool

Mid Afternoon – Shopping in Liverpool One

Liverpool is known for its shopping and I must say, I prefer the shopping here to Manchester.

Liverpool has so many sides and the Liverpool One shopping district really reflects this. Some shopping streets are older and not so nice to walk along but if you seek out John Lewis, Harvey Nichlos and Peters Lane shopping street you’ll find some nice areas and more upmarket shops to browse.

One day in Liverpool, inside Liverpool one shopping centre

Mid Afternoon – St Johns Beacon Tower

Radio Tower can be seen all over Liverpool City and going to the top is one of the top things to do in Liverpool and top Liverpool attractions !

Whilst many locals will call it Radio Tower , the viewing platform is called St Johns Beacon where an elevator will take you all the way to the top for a 360 view of the city which I recommend on your one day in. Liverpool! You can buy tickets online or once you arrive.

One day in Liverpool, view from St Johns Beacon Tower over Liverpool

Mid Afternoon – Churches & Cathedrals

Liverpool has 2 impressive cathedrals and an impressive Church all within walking distance from one another and you don’t have to be religious to appreciate them.

Liverpool Cathedral is the big red Cathedral you’ll see perched up high on the hill whilst walking around Liverpool, you can enter for free and go up to the tower for £6.00,

Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral is a modern and unique-looking building and very cool to visit, you can go inside for £5.00 pp.

The Bombed Out Cathedral is only open for events and is not a working cathedral but located at the top of Bold Street, it’s worth having a look in through the fence to see this historic building which was bombed in World War 2 and now acts as an open-air venue in Liverpool.

One day in Liverpool, Liverpool Bombed out church

Evening – Dinner on Bold Street

Bold Street is a great place to go for dinner in Liverpool, especially if you are finishing your day in Liverpool by getting the train from Liverpool Central Station as Bold Street is just next door .

Bold Street is a street full of restaurants offering fairly casual dining with cuisines around the world from Greek, Persian, Arab, Indian and more.

Elif, Bakchich and Leaf are the best Bold Street restaurants I was given on Instagram when I recently spent a weekend in Liverpoo l .

If you are looking for halal food in Liverpool , Bold Street is where you’ll find it!

One day in Liverpool, Bold Street Restaurants

Evening – Fancy Dinner in Liverpool

If you are looking for a more fancy dinner in Liverpool to end your day in Liverpool on a high, here are my recommendations:

  • The London Carriage Works
  • Marco Pierre White Steakhouse
  • Gino D’Acampo

One day in Liverpool, Desert at The London Carriage Works

Late Evening – Drinks at Gino D’Acampo Sky Bar 360

After dinner, we went to watch the sunset here and it was such a great way to end our day in Liverpool so I really recommend checking out the 360 Sky Bar Liverpool too!

One day in Liverpool, sunset view from Liverpool 360 Sky Bar

Late Evening – Theatre and Shows

Liverpool is known for its theatres and shows so if you are looking for things to do in Liverpool at night, check out what the Liverpool Theatres have on offer!

One day in Liverpool, outside Liverpool theatre

Best Hotels in Liverpool

If you’re staying for 24 hours in Liverpool and need a hotel rather than doing a day trip to Liverpool, I recommend staying central within the city.

On my recent visit to Liverpool I stayed at School Lane Hotel which I really recommend for a Liverpool city break. This is a brand new hotel in Liverpool One which is the very centre of Liverpool and the only independent hotel in Liverpool One.

This means School Lane Hotel has an amazing central location, less than a 5-minute walk from Liverpool Central Station and with shops and cafes directly outside of the hotel but, inside the hotel feels peaceful and modern and a great base to see the city from, especially with limited time.

Other city centre hotels in Liverpool I recommend are:

  • Holiday Inn Liverpool City Centre – $$
  • Novotel Liverpool Centre – $$
  • Quest Liverpool City Centre – $$$
  • INNSiDE by Meliá Liverpool – $$$
  • Crowne Plaza Liverpool City Centre – $$$
  • Hilton Liverpool City Centre – $$$
  • The Municipal Hotel Liverpool – MGallery – $$$$

How to Spend the Perfect One Day in Liverpool Itinerary

Last Updated on November 28, 2022 by Sophie Nadeau

A gem of the north, Liverpool is an extraordinary UK city that’s bursting with history and culture. And while you certainly won’t be able to see everything this famous northern English city has to offer over the course of 24 hours, you can certainly enjoy its highlights. Here’s how to spend the perfect one day in Liverpool itinerary .

liverpool guide

Home of the Beatles (possibly the world’s greatest ever band that inspired modern music as we now know it!), Liverpool is often overlooked by visitors to the UK. It can even be forgotten by Brits themselves, partially due to its proximity to more famous and larger Manchester.

But I’m here to show you that Liverpool is a city that’s well, well worth visiting – even if it’s just for a day! You can do a day trip to the northern city from plenty of UK destinations; so if you find yourself in this gorgeous city for 24 hours or less, here’s everything that you need to do to get a slice of Liverpudlian life.

visit liverpool

Brunch in one of Liverpool’s best spots

Liverpool’s foodie scene isn’t as well known as Manchester’s or Birmingham’s, but it’s a real force to be reckoned with, particularly for brunch.

There are plenty of incredible breakfast and brunch spots dotted around the city centre, ideal for fuelling up before a day spent sightseeing. Here are three of the best:

  • Hafla Hafla is a Middle Eastern-inspired restaurant serving incredible mezze-style brunches.
  • Papillon is right in the city centre, close to Liverpool Cathedral. With both meaty and vegetarian options, there’s something for everyone here!
  • If you’re vegan or are interested in trying more plant-based food, check out The Vibe Vegan Cafe – which specialises in vegan eggs! They create all the brunch classics like eggs benedict, but are completely plant-based!

Beatles Tour (or other Beatles attractions!)

You can’t go to Liverpool and not learn more about the Beatles. They’re synonymous with the city – and whether you’re a fan of their music or not, it’s well worth spending some time visiting some of the most well-known destinations related to the band.

If you’re a Beatles fantastic, I can heartily recommend the Magical Mystery Tour . This is a two-hour tour around the city centre on a brightly coloured bus, visiting all of the best places associated with the band on the way!

You’ll go past Paul and John’s houses, Penny Lane, Strawberry Field and the bandmates’ former schools – some of the stops are just a drive-by, whereas you’ll disembark the bus for others.

If you don’t want to do the full tour, take a walk down Matthew Street. This is where the famous Cavern Club, where the bandmates played their first Liverpool gig, is located. There’s also a statue of Elenor Rigby and John Lennon here.

There are also two Beatles-themed museums in Liverpool; the Beatles Story and Beatles Museum. As the name suggests, the Beatles Story covers the band’s entire history, from their humble beginnings to global phenomena.

The Beatles Museum is a gallery of artefacts that belonged to all four band members. For me, the Beatles Story is more interesting and immersive, but hardcore Beatles fans definitely do visit both in one day!

liverpool beatles

Lunch at the Baltic Triangle

The Baltic Triangle, located just south of the city centre, is potentially the most popular spot amongst locals for lunch.

Street food stalls line the area, and you can gorge on anything from Gyros to fresh noodles. It’s the ideal place to grab a quick bite to refuel yourself for the afternoon’s activities!

It is a short walk from the waterfront area where all the Beatles attractions and museums are based, so you may find yourself backtracking to see the museums. However, it’s well worth the journey – it’s a Liverpool institution, and a marvellous place to enjoy local culture.

Check out Liverpool’s best museums

There are plenty more museums to check out while you’re in town, and it’s well worth visiting at least one more during your stay.

Here are some of the best:

Museum of Liverpool

Fantastic if you’re visiting Liverpool for the first time, this extensive museum covers all you need to know about the northern city. Plus, it’s free!

museum of liverpool

Maritime Museum

Life in Liverpool has constantly revolved around its docks, and you can learn all about it in this fascinating exhibition. It focuses on the extensive history of the port, with a particular emphasis on the 19th century, when Liverpool was the richest port in the world. Don’t miss the Titanic Exhibition, which details the fateful journey that this boat took.

International Slavery Museum

This is probably the most important museum to visit in Liverpool. It’s located on the third floor of the Maritime Museum but deserves an entry in its own right.

It details the city’s connections with slavery, offering a sobering picture of how much Liverpool – and the UK in general – was involved in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. It also looks at modern slavery and its presence in both Liverpool and the wider world.

Did you know that London’s TATE Museum has a Liverpudlian counterpart? If you’re interested in art, then it’s well worth visiting this extensive gallery. What’s more, just like the TATE in the capital, entry to this museum is completely free!

tate liverpool

Cruise on the River Mersey

No trip to Liverpool is complete without taking in the River Mersey. This river was a big reason why the city turned into such a powerhouse in the 19th century, and you can take in incredible views of the city, plus learn a little more about local life, by setting sail.

From the water, you’ll see Royal Albert Dock and Liverpool’s Cathedrals, and you can listen to a commentary all about Liverpool’s thriving history as a port city. It’s the ideal activity to do when you’re winding down for the day; on some vessels, you can even purchase a drink to enjoy while you take in the views.

Cruise on the River Mersey

Liverpool Cathedral

Many tourists who visit Liverpool don’t know that it’s home to the largest religious building in the country (and the 8th largest in the world!).

That’s right, Liverpool Cathedral is one of the most significant religious buildings you can visit in the UK, so don’t miss it while you’re exploring the city!

Compared to other Cathedrals up and down the country, it’s very young – it was only finished in the 1970s. However, it’s home to the country’s biggest pipe organ and some of the highest bells in the world!

If you can, it’s worth ascending the cathedral tower and taking in views of the Mersey!

liverpool cathedral

Walk around Chinatown

One last area that’s well worth visiting in Liverpool is Chinatown. It’s the oldest of its kind in the UK, dating back to the latest 19th century when Chinese merchants arrived in the city to trade.

Nowadays, it’s a bustling neighbourhood with plenty of shops and restaurants. You could choose to eat here – New Capital Chinese Restaurant is known for its fantastic Asian dishes – or just take a stroll around!

chinatown liverpool

Dine at Panoramic 34 restuarant

If you decided to not eat in Chinatown, there are plenty more restaurants to sample when you’re in Liverpool centre.

Try Panoramic 34 for excellent views over the river; as the name suggests, it’s located on the 34th floor of one of Liverpool’s tallest buildings. The cuisine is fine dining with an extensive wine list.

A night out on the town!

Liverpool’s known to be a great night out, so if you’re partial to a bit of nightlife, then spend your evening hitting up a few pubs, bars and clubs! Many of Liverpool’s best bars are located in its buzzing Georgian Quarter.

Here are some favourites:

  • Jenever: This is a popular gin bar that is a must-visit for any fans of the tipple!
  • Jenny : Not to be confused with Jenever, this ultra-hip prohibition era bar will take you right back to 1920s America.
  • The Baltic Social: Back to where we recommended for lunch, this bar has lots of craft beers on offer.
  • The Smuggler’s Cove: Located right by the river, this pub is famous for both its rum and its pirate-esque theme!
  • The Lisbon: Liverpool is a very LGBTQIA+ friendly city, and while there are lots of venues for the community, The Lisbon is the oldest; it’s welcomed a gay community since the 1960s.

Where to stay in Liverpool

If you’re a backpacker, Embassie Liverpool Backpackers is one of the most atmospheric places to stay in the city. Located in a 200-year-old building, it was actually the first hostel in Liverpool – so they really know what they’re doing when it comes to hosting backpackers, with free WiFi, free breakfast, a shared kitchen and 24-hour reception.

For a more budget-friendly hotel, Z Hotel has a branch in Liverpool. They offer great value, no-frills but comfortable rooms with en-suite bathrooms and modern decor.

The Titanic Hotel Liverpool is situated right by the river. The rooms are opulent and comfortable, and there’s a spa on-site, with a swimming pool and sauna and steam room facilities. If you want somewhere to relax after a busy day exploring the city, there’s nowhere better.

The perfect city break, Liverpool has a thriving culture, beautiful views over the Mersey River and plenty of history to learn about. While you could spend weeks learning about its many fascinating tales, you can get a feel for this buzzing metropolis in just one day. Make sure you keep referring back to this one-day in Liverpool itinerary to ensure that you make the most out of your trip!

48 hours in Liverpool – 2 day Itinerary

I have spent a lot of time travelling around England and Liverpool has been one of my favorite places. Being rasied in the UK, I had the opportunity to see Liverpool through the eyes of a local, which allowed me to make the most out of my two days there. When I visited Liverpool with my family, we realized how much was there to do and explore! We were amazed by its history, culture, and iconic sites such as the Albert Dock and Beatles Story Museum. But our biggest challenge was figuring out what were the must-dos during our two days in Liverpool. Fortunately, I had done some research prior to our trip and spoke to several travelers who had recently visited the city. What’s more is that we found out about some hidden gems that only locals knew about (e.g., Durning Road Library). This gave us a huge edge over other tourists as well as an assurance that we were getting reliable advice from people who have already experienced it. Therefore, if you are looking for an itinerary or tips for your two days in Liverpool – look no further! You can be sure that this advice comes from someone who has lived in England, spent a lot of time travelling around, and experienced firsthand what it’s like visiting this amazing place.

Looking to spend 2 days in Liverpool? As the hometown of the Beatles, Liverpool has earned its place on the bucket list of all classic rock fans. However, the city has so much more to offer- from a rich history as one of the most important port cities of England, to its two iconic football (soccer!) teams.

Liverpool UK sunset aerial view. City in the United Kingdom.

How many days in Liverpool do you need? It’s hard to say- this city is really vibrant, but it’s also quite small- so while you could easily stay in Liverpool for weeks, two days is enough time to hit up many of the main tourist attractions and things to do in Liverpool.

Liverpool does have its own airport, the Liverpool John Lennon Airport, so you can take a direct flight to there from many other European destinations if you’re visiting as part of a longer trip. However, many people visit from other parts of the UK, and it couldn’t be easier to get to Liverpool via train.

The ride from London Euston station to Liverpool Lime Street Station takes just over two hours, and it leaves multiple times daily, so you can easily plan to spend a weekend in Liverpool from London (or other UK destinations!)

Liverpool has a lot of great neighborhoods, each of which has a unique feel to it. Stay in the City Center for easy access to cute pubs and the famous Mathew Street (where the Beatles performed).

The Baltic Triangle is a more trendy area with art and street food- stay in a converted warehouse here to experience a younger side of Liverpool- especially great if you’re looking for a stay for your  weekend in Liverpool itinerary.

If you’re looking for a budget stay, the more suburban Everton area offers less expensive accommodation with easy access to the city.

Below is a guide on What to do in Liverpool in two days, we hope you enjoy it!

The Ropewalks is a cool neighborhood in Liverpool made up of Victorian warehouses which have been converted into vintage shops, cafes, and trendy restaurants. It’s a great place to start your trip to Liverpool because it really shows how much regeneration and growth the city’s experiencing in recent years, and it’s super cool!

If the weather’s good, sit outside at Bold Street Coffee – a cute little café offering traditional English breakfast fare to a really high standard. We’d recommend getting the full English, a classic UK meal consisting of eggs, sausage, bacon, toast, and beans(plus a few extras).

Sitting on the street outside gives you a great chance to people watch- and you can also enjoy views of St Lukes Bombed Out Church down the street. This  church is in ruins after being bombed by the Germans in 1941 and now serves as a cultural institute with regular events, as well as a war memorial.

After breakfast, slowly make your way through the neighborhood to enjoy the quirky shops and galleries lining the streets here.

After lunch, make your way to the Royal Albert Dock, the center of Liverpool’s maritime heritage, and head to the International Slavery Museum .

This free museum documents the worldwide slave trade and the important part Liverpool played it in. It’s definitely a somber experience, but it’s important to appreciate the history of Liverpool and to acknowledge the role that slaves had in building its legacy.

The vision of the museum is “to inform and help visitors understand the history and legacy of transatlantic slavery and the wider issues of freedom and injustice”, and they have done an amazing job of curating the museum to do just that.

The Merseyside Maritime Museum is attached to the International Slavery Museum, and it also is free to enter. It tells the story of Liverpool’s maritime past, including exhibits about the sinking of the Titanic, which was registered in Liverpool (and many of the crew members were from the city).

You’ll find a large collection of maritime paintings, as well as large-scale models of how boats hundreds of years ago would have looked inside.

Eat Lunch at the Royal Albert Docks

The Royal Albert Dock has been built up a lot over the years, and is home to a huge number of cafes and restaurants in converted warehouses lining the Mersey river. There are tons of options here, but two which we’d really recommend.

The first is Maray , a restaurant recently named one of the UK’s best places to eat by the water. Their menu is made up of small plates inspired by the middle east, and their hummus is the star of the show. If you’re traveling alone or in a pair, pull up a bar seat and enjoy the view of the water from the window.

If you’re in the mood for something a bit more traditional, check out the Pump House . A typical pub, the Pump House is housed in a converted Victorian pump house. Get some bangers and mash, a pie, or a pint while enjoying a nice relaxed atmosphere.

Learn about Local Legends at the Beatles Story

While there’s much more to Liverpool than just the Beatles, they’re definitely high on any visitor’s list!

The Beatles were born and formed in Liverpool, so the city played an incredibly important part in the formation and success of the band. See artifacts from their childhoods to recent years and learn about the musical culture of the 60s.

The Beatles story museum is narrated by an audio guide, and it’s really well-curated, including representations of important locations in the band’s history like the Cavern Club (the venue in Liverpool where they were discovered).

After learning more about the Beatles, walk along the waterfront to find the famous statue of the four band members.

You’ll almost always find a busker singing Beatles songs, and seeing all the people coming to see the statue feels like a beautiful tribute to their incredible contribution to music.

A bit further along the dock, you’ll find the Memorial to Heroes of the Marine Engine Room (commonly known as the Titanic Memorial).

Originally built in honor of engineers who lost their lives as part of the Titanic tragedy, it was expanded to include all maritime engine room fatalities during World War II.

It’s a beautiful memorial and a touching tribute to Liverpool’s contribution to the maritime industry.

The Liver Building (pronounced Lie-ver) was Europe’s first ever skyscraper. Built in 1911 as the headquarters of the Royal Liver Group (an insurance company), the building is really important to Liverpool culturally and historically.

It also has an amazing view of all of Liverpool from the top. You can enter the building and visitor’s centre for free, but we’d recommend prebooking a ticket to head up to the top for the beautiful view.

Tower Tour and Experience

  • Access 360-degree views

After a very busy day of sightseeing, it’s time to relax with a meal and a pint. The Slaughter House may not have the most appetizing name.

But it will win you over with it’s cosy interior and delicious menu of British classic (plus a wide assortment of beers, from traditional ales to local microbrews). It’s the oldest pub in Liverpool, and you can really feel the history all around you when dining here.

From dinner, it’s just a quick stroll up the road to Mathew street, the heart of Liverpool’s famed nightlife. Home to the Cavern Club, where the Beatles were discovered, the street is full of bars with amazing live music acts.

The Cavern Club was rebuilt, so you can go there for some fun tribute acts (but you’ll need a ticket). Otherwise, head to the Grapes (another favorite Beatles haunt) or SGT Peppers for live acts basically every night of the week.

Liverpudlians (the locals) are known for their hospitality, so let loose, make some friends, and enjoy what Liverpool does best!

The Tate Liverpool is Liverpool’s leading art museum, and it’s one of the best collections in the whole of the UK.

The museum was created in the 1980s as the “Tate of the North”, as an addition to the famous Tate museums in London and Cornwall. Wander the galleries and take in some of the country’s most interesting pieces.

Have a casual lunch at the Duke Street Food & Drink Market

The Duke Street Food & Drink Market is a massive food hall with an industrial vibe that offers a wide selection of meal options.

From burgers to Spanish tapas to tacos, there’s something for everyone here. It’s really popular with young locals, so it’s a fun place to experience Liverpool like you live there.

After spending time inside learning about the Beatles on Day 1, hop on a bus on day 2 to experience Liverpool through the Beatles.

The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour will take you around the city on a fun, colorful coach to see famous places from Beatles songs like Strawberry Field and Penny Lane, as well as the childhood home of Paul McCartney, and more.

You can also find some information online to discover these places yourself, but by booking a tour you’ll get insight and information that you would never learn on your own.

Magical Mystery Tour

  • Entrance into The Cavern Club

Hope Street is the high street of Liverpool’s gorgeous Canning Georgian quarter, and has previously won the title of the best street in the UK! It’s well deserved- this picturesque street is full of bars, hotels and restaurants, and is an absolute highlight of the city.

It houses the famous Liverpool Philharmonic, as well as 2 of Liverpool’s most famous churches. Head to Papillon, a chic gastropub with twists on traditional pub dishes (including a venison scotch egg, yum!). They have an extensive drinks menu and even host regular jazz nights.

After dinner, head to the nearby Hot Water Comedy Club , which hosts standup acts 5 days a week. Whether its your first show, or you’re a comedy regular, you’ll be laughing until you cry at this fun spot.

The Baltic triangle is one of the trendiest spots in Liverpool, and is incredibly popular with young locals. Hosting a bunch of indie shops, restaurants, and bars in converted warehouses, Baltic Triangle is an amazing place for a night out with friends. Dance, be merry, and look back on your amazing 2 days in Liverpool!

We haven’t included a football match on the official itinerary, as it may not be feasible depending on seasonality, day you’re visiting, and a few other factors.

But Liverpool FC is as iconic as it gets, so managing to watch a match during your 48 hours in Liverpool would be an incredible experience! Even just watching from a pub is quite the experience – Liverpool fans are no joke!

One Day in Liverpool Itinerary – Top Things to do in Liverpool, United Kingdom

Liverpool is more than just the birthplace of the Beatles. Pressed against the banks of the Mersey River, it’s a city that was built on maritime trade and slavery. White Star Line had its headquarters on James Street and registered its ships in the city, and when the RMS Titanic sank in 1912 it had Liverpool written on its stern. Liverpool is one of the UK’s friendliest cities, but it also enjoys nurturing the intense footballing rivalry that comes from having two teams at neighbouring stadiums playing in the same league. All of this clearly shows that one day here is bound to be full of adventures, so follow this itinerary and prepare for something very special!

What’s the best time to visit Liverpool?

Liverpool is a northern city and therefore used to sitting under a drizzly grey sky even midway through the year. The UK’s changeable weather makes it difficult to pinpoint an ideal time to visit, but from early June until September the days are longer (and warmer), giving you more time to explore the city during daylight hours.

There are also plenty of events you can visit. Naturally, it comes as no surprise that International Beatleweek is held here (end of August), and Sound City is a huge indie and rock festival also worth a visit, usually in late spring. Sports fans will want to go and see a Liverpool FC or Everton match, and if you’re particularly lucky, you will be able to witness the Merseyside derby – the clash of these two teams in the Premier League. Africa Oye should also be noted as it is the biggest festival of African music in the UK.

Liverpool

A few facts about Liverpool

Outside London, Liverpool is the most filmed city in the UK. It’s doubled for a number of foreign locations over the years, including Gotham City in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ and Moscow in ‘The Hunt for Red October’. Many of its post-industrial buildings and backdrops have been featured in UK TV dramas including the BBC’s Peaky Blinders.

Liverpool Town Hall

You might hear people refer to themselves and others as ‘ Scouse ’ or as a ‘ Scouser ’. It’s a slang term describing either the city’s distinctive local accent or someone that was born and raised in Liverpool. The word comes from meat, vegetable and potato stew commonly eaten by the poor in the 19th century. You can still order scouse in a number of the city’s restaurants.

Panoramic View, Liverpool

Liverpool is a metropolitan city in every sense of the word, and this is confirmed by some quite fascinating facts. For example, the city’s black and Chinese communities are the oldest ones in Europe. Furthermore, the biggest Chinese Arch on the continent is also in Liverpool.

One Day in Liverpool Itinerary – Top things to do in Liverpool, UK

Welcome to the home of the Beatles! Liverpool’s city centre is surprisingly compact and easy to explore on foot. If you’re feeling tired or looking to explore the wider Merseyside area, then there’s an extensive local transport network including buses, trains, a metro-style railway and a ferry. Taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced, and Uber also operates throughout the city.

But to make the most of your one day in Liverpool, just follow this itinerary. These are the top sights and things to do while you’re here. Enjoy!

Meresyside area, Liverpool

Visit Liverpool Cathedral

Start your day with a short walk up to Liverpool Cathedral . It took 74 years to build and is the biggest Anglican Cathedral in Europe . Far less ostentatious than other places of worship, it’s the use of open space without the clutter of pews or seats that makes this place truly worth visiting. Stand under the world’s widest and highest Gothic arches and look up. Marvel at the glorious sunlit stained-glass windows.

Liverpool Cathedral

Visit the Lady Chapel for a more traditional but equally impressive place of reflection and worship. Art fans will enjoy the cathedral’s display of permanent and loaned pieces throughout the building. Volunteers in brown robes are on hand to answer any questions, and you can also join a free tour.

You can also enjoy a hot drink and a cake in the café or pick out a souvenir in the gift shop. Entry into the cathedral is free, but it’s worth dropping a few coins into one of the donation boxes at the exit. Those more energetically minded can pay to climb the tower for panoramic views over the city.

Liverpool Cathedral

Walk around Albert Dock

No visit to Liverpool is complete without a walk around Albert Dock . Opened in 1846, its dockside and warehouse complex allowed goods to be quickly unloaded from waiting ships and then safely stored. It was the world’s first fireproof dock ; made from cast iron, stone and brick rather than traditional wood.

Albert Docks, Liverpool

Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also has the largest collection of Grade I listed buildings in the UK. Walk around its colonnades, under its stone arches and along the water’s edge for a little retail therapy or stop for a drink at one of its cafes, restaurants or bars.

Albert Docks, Liverpool

Check out some great museums

History fans will enjoy an hour or two spent wandering around the exhibition space in the National Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum . Both are housed in the same building, are free to enter and well worth a visit. A permanent Titanic exhibition inside the Maritime Museum explores Liverpool’s connection to the doomed liner whilst the Slavery Museum highlights a far uglier side to the city’s maritime expansion. Modern Art fans will enjoy a visit to the Tate Gallery which is also free to enter.

Merseyside Maritime Museum, Liverpool

Journey through the Beatles Story

Pop into the Rough Hand Made Boutique Bakery on Albert Dock for a pastry and coffee if you’re hungry before heading to the Beatles Story . This fascinating museum follows the story of four local boys in post-war Liverpool from humble musical beginnings to global stardom. An audio guide is included in the price and narrated by John Lennon’s sister, Julia. You can book the ticket here .

The Beatles Story, Liverpool

Sit down for a nice lunch

Given Liverpool’s history, it’s no wonder that you can find all sorts of different restaurants here offering dishes from all over the world. Therefore, do take some time during your one day here to sit down for lunch.

Cowshed , for example, offers excellent steaks. Then there’s Greek Taverna Bold Street which has very agreeable prices, just like Salt House Tapas . Furthermore, Bacaro is a great Italian place, and Meet Argentinian Restaurant will introduce you to some South American specialties. In short, this city is amazing for foodies!

Visit the White Star Line HQ

From Albert Dock, you can walk past the Pier Master’s House towards Pier Head and along the banks of the Mersey towards the iconic Liver Building . Look out for the two metal birds (named Bertie and Bella) perched at the top.

The Royal Lliver Building, Liverpool

Just behind the Liver Building at the bottom of James Street, you’ll see a white and red striped brick building: this was where the White Star Line had its headquarters. When news of the Titanic’s sinking reached the city, people gathered outside for news of their relatives on board. Too scared to come down to greet the crowds, employees shouted information down from the balconies. The building is now a Titanic-themed hotel .

Take a tour of Anfield

Liverpool Football Club is one of the UK’s most successful teams . If you’re a fan of the beautiful game, then don’t miss the chance to visit Anfield on a tour . They run daily (with some restrictions on match days), and let you walk the players’ tunnel, go into the changing rooms, see the pitch from the stands and visit the Kop. Included in the ticket is entry to the Liverpool FC Museum where you can see all 6 European trophies.

trip ke liverpool

If you’re in a hurry, you can always skip the tour and pay a smaller fee to just visit the museum. The Premiership season runs from August to May. To experience Anfield at its absolute best, see if there’s a match on when you’re visiting. YNWA!

Go for some serious shopping

Not a football fan? You might feel more at home amongst the 170 shops, restaurants and bars at Liverpool One . Liverpool One has something for every shopper’s budget, but it’s an open-air mall so remember to bring a jacket in colder weather. There’s a wide range of places to eat, grab a caffeine fix, beer or cocktail. Try the Cosy Club if you’re looking for somewhere to sit and knock back a glass of something sparkling.

Liverpool One

End your day at the Cavern Club

The Cavern Club is Liverpool’s most famous live music venue and with good reason: the Beatles played the underground club almost 300 times. Other famous bands who sang under its arches were The Kinks, The Who, The Rolling Stones and Elton John . Unfortunately, the buildings above the original Cavern were demolished in 1973, so this isn’t the exact club itself but one rebuilt in its image (using many of the original bricks). The old entrance is slightly further down the street.

The Cavern, Liverpool

There’s a steady stream of live music most days and you can also sign up for a free behind-the-scenes tour. The cover charge to get inside is usually just a couple of pounds, but it’s well worth ending your night here as the drinks aren’t expensive and the singers and cover bands are often more than worthy of performing on its hallowed stage. You can also visit The Cavern Restaurant for dinner before hitting the drinks.

Day Trips From Liverpool

As you can see, there is plenty to do during your one day in Liverpool, so you may be tempted to stay longer. And if you do stay longer, this opens up a whole array of possibilities, especially when it comes to day trips from this wonderful city. There are some amazing options, so let’s go through them, shall we?

Manchester is an easy day trip from Liverpool and is similarly famous for its music scene, shopping, football rivalries, and industrial history. But there are also some fantastic museums, the John Rylands Library, the amazing town hall, and many, many other incredible sights. The city is also famous for its nightlife and is around one hour away by train, so spending one day in Manchester certainly seems like a good idea.

Another nice option for a day trip is Chester. This lovely town on the outskirts of Liverpool can be reached in about 40 minutes, both by car or train. Its zoo is a great day out for families and animal lovers, with about 500 animal species to see. Book online and you’ll save 10% on the price at the gate. The cathedral and the town hall are also worth a visit, so a trip to Chester is bound to be a wonderful experience.

Speke Hall is a Tudor timber-framed manor house managed by the National Trust and open to visitors. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and woodland, it’s the perfect day trip if you want to explore a different side of Liverpool’s history. The building’s history starts all the way back in 1530, so you can bet you’re in for something very special. Plus, you can visit the on-site restaurant for a taste of beef scouse.

The Peak District

The Peak District is the ideal place to burn off all the scouse you’ve been eating. There are plenty of opportunities to walk over glorious hills and valleys and lots of local pubs to reward yourself in, too. This wonderful area is actually a national park, which speaks volumes of the beauty you can expect to encounter here. A perfect day trip from Liverpool for any nature lover.

Extra tips for visiting Liverpool

– A great way to really get to know the city is to take one of the walking tours they have around here. They’re free!

– When it comes to tipping, remember that people here have a regular salary, so they don’t rely on tips exclusively to get by (as is the case with the US). Still, a tip will very much be appreciated – somewhere about 10% should be enough.

– Uber is often the cheapest way to get around town if you don’t have a car, especially if you use the UberPool option.

– But you may want to consider renting out a car, since the prices can be quite low: you should be able to find something for around 10 pounds a day.

One Day In Liverpool - The Ultimate 24 Hour Itinerary

Edited by Matthew Wears

Over the years I’ve seen Liverpool go from being a very industrial landscape, to becoming one of the most exciting places in the UK. Back in 2008, we were lucky enough to win the European Capital of culture, catapulting us into the global eye as a fun and vibrant city with lots going on. These days, we’re still continuing on that path and adding to our already huge repertoire of things to see and do. There’s now not really a best time to visit Liverpool, there’s so much going on all year round all across the city.

For my Liverpool one-day itinerary, I’ve tried to condense all of this as best I can to fit in one little twenty-four-hour bundle. I’ll try to get you to see as much of the city as you can – from the famous docks all the way up to our impressive cathedrals in the north of the city and everything in between. There’ll be bars, restaurants and lots of must-see sites that you can’t afford to miss. So, if you’ve ever thought about how to spend a day in Liverpool, then this one’s for you.

Morning

Before we start off your one-day itinerary in Liverpool, the first thing I will say is that there are lots of hotel options for tourists coming to Merseyside these days. You really shouldn’t have any trouble finding a hotel that will cover all of your needs – at any price or style.

Then, depending on where you’re staying or how you’re arriving in the city, I’d say the perfect place to start your one day in Liverpool would have to be the Pier Head. This as central as it gets for most people, although if you’re coming in by train then you might want to start with William Brown Street which I’ve mentioned down below.

Getting here couldn’t be easier – there are so many busses that come through this way from pretty much anywhere in the city and it’s within walking distance from most places too.

City Unscripted article image

The pier head is the part of Liverpool that most people are familiar with. I always think it’s interesting to imagine this area full of factories and docklands long ago because these days there’s been so much redevelopment you would hardly recognize it!

It’s the right place to start your one day in Liverpool because there are so many must-see attractions around here that you have to see. The Liver Building for example overlooks this pretty area. I’d say it’s our most famous building, although I probably wouldn’t go in there if you’re on a tight schedule. Instead, I’d spend some time along at the Royal Albert Docks which is right next to Pier Head.

There's lots to see and do here, but if you’ve not already had breakfast this is a good place for that. With just twenty-four hours in Liverpool, you won’t have time to cram everything in here – so just take your time and enjoy it.

City Unscripted article image

From the Docks, head back over to the Pier Head for a Mersey boat trip. These days, it’s quite popular for people to take ferries out onto the river and see the city that way. It only takes about fifty minutes or an hour but it’s a good way of seeing things like the Pier Head or the Docks from a different perspective.

There’s also a running commentary which is handy if you want to learn more about the various sights that you can see along the river Mersey. From here I’d recommend stopping for lunch because you probably won’t have too much time later on in the day.

I always find that one of the best things to do in Liverpool when you need some quick food is to go to Liverpool One Shopping Centre. You’ll find some familiar restaurants in this state-of-the-art shopping center as well as some unusual ones too. It’s always good to come somewhere with lots of choices, and nowhere has more than here.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, the first thing that you really should see is Liverpool’s famous cathedrals. The only thing is that they’re a little bit further out of town, so for one day it’s probably best that you skip the walk because it’ll just be a bit too much really. I’d recommend you get a day pass for the hop-on hop-off tourist bus that stops at both of the cathedrals – it’ll save you a lot of time.

Liverpool Cathedral is probably the one that you’ll be most familiar with and for very good reason – it’s Britain’s largest cathedral. It’s one of the most impressive Liverpool attractions and if you go to the top of the tower, you’ll get some really top views out over Merseyside.

The other cathedral is the Metropolitan, or as we call it, Paddys Wigwam. It gets this name for very obvious reasons; you just have to take one look at it really and you’ll see why! This is quite clearly much more modern, but I think it’s really interesting to see the two cathedrals in the same afternoon.

City Unscripted article image

From here, you should be able to get back on the bus back into the city centre. For a lot of people, one of the most interesting Liverpool attractions is that it’s a UNESCO world heritage site. There are three main areas dotted all across the city that are very important to Liverpool’s maritime history, and one is in the centre of town.

Up by the Lime Street Station area is William Brown Street, which is known as the cultural quarter of Liverpool. It’s got some really beautiful architecture such as the Great North Western Hotel and St. Georges Hall, so it’s a must for fans of lavish buildings and amazing exteriors. If you get the chance, the Walker Art Gallery and the Liverpool Library can be interesting if you’ve got a little bit of spare time.

Evening

In the evening, there’s a couple of different options for you to try. For food, I would definitely go to the Baltic Triangle area of town. This part of town was once very industrial, but these days it’s transforming itself to become the coolest part of the whole city .

If you do find yourself with more than one day in Liverpool, it’s well worth having a little look around the galleries and event spaces here. There’s plenty going on at night as well though – bars and restaurants included. Somewhere that’s really quite interesting is the and a bit of a gem is Cains Brewery .

This used to be a huge industrial site but it’s now quickly becoming the best place in Liverpool to get some really unusual foods . There’s a kind of food market with lots of little stalls here as well as lots of great restaurants to try here too. Afterwards, go for cocktail in Birdy’s bar, or a refreshing craft beer at the Craft Minded.

City Unscripted article image

I could write loads on what to do in Liverpool in a day, but I could write just as much if not more on what to do here at night! Liverpool’s nightlife is known all over the world – whether it’s for the vibrant bar culture or our legendary music scene .

To get a proper feel for it in just one night is difficult, but I don’t think anywhere sums it up better than the Cavern Quarter. This is home to the famous Cavern Club, which is where The Beatles started out playing their first gigs. Drink at the same bar as the Fab Four once did, or head to another bar nearby – there’s enough to choose from!

I don’t think you’ll have time to fit this in to your twenty-four hours in Liverpool, but if you’re interested in the Beatles then you can take part in a Beatles tour around the city on your next trip!

Planning a day trip to Liverpool? Great shout! This is one of my favourite cities in the UK . Although you could spend much longer, 1 day in Liverpool makes for a fantastic introduction. From the Beatles to the Titanic, Liverpool’s iconic history and connection to pop culture put it on the map. However, it’s a vibrant and cosmopolitan city in its own right. In particular, the Royal Albert Docks give the city a bright, outdoorsy feel with sea views. Since I have friends and family in Manchester , I’ve taken more than one day trip to Liverpool in the last few years. I love revisiting the same places and finding new, cool spots.

LIVERPOOL ESSENTIALS Accommodation:  Booking.com // Hostelworld Activities:  GetYourGuide Getting there: Air ( Skyscanner ) train ( Trainline ), bus ( Busbud ) Getting around: Foot / bus / Uber

When to visit Liverpool

It goes without saying that the summer months have the best weather. Liverpool is renowned for being rainy during autumn and winter but if you pack waterproof shoes and an umbrella, you’ll be fine.

Visiting out of season? Here’s what to do in Liverpool during winter

Something to note is that many of the museums and galleries are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. I’d really recommend visiting from Wednesday to Sunday to make the most of the city. Of course, if you hate crowds, avoid Liverpool at the weekend.

Getting to Liverpool

By train: this is usually the quickest way to get to Liverpool. Prices from Manchester to Liverpool Lime Street station start at £2 each way! Search for tickets on Trainline . By bus: Although buses usually take a bit longer in England , you can get super cheap tickets. Book bus tickets with Busbud . By car: Liverpool is an expensive city for parking. The most central option is Liverpool ONE shopping centre (£19 for 12 hours). If you don’t mind a walk, park along Otterspool Promenade for free and walk into town along the riverfront. It’s a few kilometers but completely flat. On a Sunday, there’s free parking on Bold Street and Rodney Street.

Getting around Liverpool

It’s easy to explore Liverpool on foot. If you’re feeling lazy, hop on a bus. Another tourist-friendly option is taking the Liverpool hop-on-hop-off bus tour .

1 day liverpool itinerary

What type of Liverpool itinerary is this?

This is a fast-paced itinerary for those exploring Liverpool for the first time. I’d recommend arriving as early as you can as there’s quite a bit to cover. Customise this 1 day Liverpool itinerary by choosing the museums and galleries you’re most interested in and set your own pace. If you’re speedy, you can probably do three museums but if you like to take your time, just do one thoroughly.

1 day in Liverpool highlights

  • Royal Albert Dock
  • Museums (pick 1-3)
  • The Waterfront

Queen Avenue

  • Mathew Street (Wall of Fame & Cavern Club)
  • The Bluecoats (gallery)
  • Chinatown & the Bombed Out Church
  • Dinner (keep reading for options).

Liverpool itinerary: Morning at the Royal Albert Dock

Royal albert docks day in liverpool

I’d suggest beginning your day here. If you’ve arrived by train, walk from Liverpool Lime Street Station to the Royal Albert Dock in 20 minutes. Although there’s plenty to do in terms of culture and history, let’s start this Liverpool day trip the right way with…

Coffee & pastries at Rough Hand Made

Croissant Rough Hand Made

Although I sniffed out this place by myself (if you don’t believe food hunting is my special skill, check out my foodie archives ), TWO Liverpudlians have told me about it since. Rough Hand Made is apparently a local institution, describing itself as a ’boutique bakery’. I don’t think I’ve ever seen bigger croissants, or ones stuffed and slathered with more delicious ingredients. I opted for a white chocolate croissant with flakes on top and liquid white chocolate inside. Other decadent options include dulce de leche croissants. This cafe beside the water also serves excellent coffee, as well as sandwiches and pizza slices. Address: Unit 2A, Britannia Pavilion Royal Albert Dock, L3 4AD.

Visit 1-2 museums

Although all the waterfront museums are worth a visit, with just one day in Liverpool you won’t be able to visit them all. I’d suggest picking two you’re interested in and spending around 90 minutes at each. The most popular museums at the docks are:

  • The Museum of Liverpool (free)
  • TATE Liverpool (free)
  • Merseyside Maritime Museum (free)
  • The Beatles Story (£17)
  • The British Music Experience (£16).

If you’re unsure which to visit, here are more details…

Museum of Liverpool

Museum of Liverpool itinerary 1 day

The Museum of Liverpool makes for a great introduction if it’s your first time in the city. This colourful, interactive centre covers everything Liverpool-related from archaeology to social history, community, suffragettes and the Beatles. Ever-changing exhibitions include Liverpool Against the Apartheid (how the city’s Black community supported the anti-apartheid movement in the ’80s) and Blitzed: Liverpool Lives (personal stories about the Blitz in Liverpool). Opening times: 10am-6pm, Tuesday-Sunday. Entry price: free!

Beatles Story

Beside the Royal Albert Dock is this iconic museum dedicated to the fab four. The Beatles Story covers the history of the band from their humble beginnings to international stardom. Admire replicas of Abbey Road Studios and The Cavern Club as they’d have looked in the ’60s, listen to an informative audio guide, and travel to another time and place via the Beatles in India exhibition. Opening times: 10am-5.30pm (last entry 4pm) daily. Entry fee: £17 for adults, £13.50 for concessions, £9.50 for children. Get your Beatles Story ticket here .

Maritime Museum

Maritime Museum

Where better to learn about Liverpool’s maritime history than the Docks? During the 19th century, Liverpool was the wealthiest port in the world; there are countless tales to be told from this era. Visit the Titanic collection to learn more about the famous ship registered to Liverpool, and the Life on Board gallery as told by past passengers. Opening times: 10am-6pm, Tuesday-Sunday. Entry price: free!

TATE Liverpool

tate liverpool in 1 day

The Tate is worth a visit while spending a day in Liverpool. The colourful stone sculpture outside is a prelude to the many vibrant and thought-provoking works of art inside. I especially enjoyed the Whose Tradition? collection rethinking how artists like Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brancusi took inspiration from Central and West African cultures which were not necessarily theirs to take. 2023 update – this specific exhibition is now over but I’m sure there will be more like it. Opening times: 10am–5:50pm, Tuesday-Sunday. Entry fee: Free but you need to book an arrival slot in advance.

British Music Experience

British Music Experience liverpool day trip

The British Music Experience in the impressive Cunard Building explores the iconic history of British rock and pop. Voted Liverpool’s Tourism Experience of the Year in 2020, it’s a must for music fans regardless of age or era. See outfits worn by Freddie Mercury and the Spice Girls, instruments played by world-famous musicians and even Adele’s hand-written lyrics. Opening times: 10am-5pm, Wednesday-Sunday. Entry fee: £16 for adults, £10 for children, £11.50 for concessions. Get your British Music Experience ticket here .

Wander the Waterfront

Waterfront

When you’ve had your fill of museums, continue your Liverpool itinerary by wandering the waterfront. This area is particularly enjoyable on a sunny day when live musicians play and boat trips cruise the harbour. Related activity: 50-minute harbour cruise for £11 . A few iconic waterfront buildings to see include… The Three Graces: this trio of buildings includes the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building. These are some of the grandest and most striking buildings in the city.

Three graces

Mann Island : this distinctive black building at Liverpool waterfront has apartments, a restaurant and a small art gallery inside. It’s free to enter so pop inside to visit the Open Eye Gallery .

Queen Avenue 1 day liverpool

By this point, you’ll have spent several hours at the waterfront so it’s time to explore other parts of Liverpool. Walk just 10 minutes to Queen Avenue off Castle Street, a hidden shopping street dubbed the ‘Diagon Alley of Liverpool’. Support local business by browsing the shops or stopping for lunch at Queen Bistro .

Foodie pick – another fantastic place for lunch is Chop Chop Korean just across from Queen Avenue. This cafe is known for its delicious and affordable Korean food.

Liverpool itinerary afternoon – Mathew Street’s Beatles locations

You can’t spend 1 day in Liverpool and miss Mathew Street, put on the map by the Cavern Club where the Beatles played their early gigs. There are a few points of interest for fans including…

The Eleanor Rigby Statue

Eleanor Rigby Statue

Located on Stanley Street just before the turning to Mathew Street, the Eleanor Rigby Statue is worth a quick stop. This sculpture of the fictional woman namechecked on the Yellow Submarine album was built in 1982 by singer, Tommy Steele. Turn onto Mathew Street to see the following…

Cavern Club

Cavern club

At number 10 Mathew Street is the venue described as the ‘birthplace of the Beatles’. The Cavern Club started life as a jazz club in the 1950s before switching to a rock ‘n’ roll venue. After returning from Hamburg in 1931, the Beatles played their first of 292 shows at the Cavern Club. You can go inside for a drink or night out but know you won’t be rubbing shoulders with the locals. The clientele is strictly tourists!

The Wall of Fame

In front of the Cavern Club is a wall adorned with the names of famous bands who played at the club. Don’t miss the chance to pose with the lifesize statue of John Lennon! As you’ll read, the bar beside it named the ‘Wall of Fame’ has no affiliation to the historic wall.

Beatles Museum

Beatles museum liverpool itinerary

The Beatles Museum is another place to learn about everyone’s favourite Liverpudlian band. Tour five floors containing over 1,000 rare items relating to John, George, Ringo and Paul. You’d have to be a super fan to visit the Beatles Story AND the Beatles Museum during a day trip to Liverpool (and probably wouldn’t have time to do much else) but I bet people do! Entry fee: £15 for adults, £10 for concessions, £7.50 for children. Opening times: 10am-5pm, 7 days a week. Last admission at 4pm. Get your Beatles Museum ticket here .

Mid-afternoon – the Bluecoat

The Bluecoat gallery

Before finishing your Liverpool day trip, squeeze in a quick trip to the Bluecoat . This hidden gem near Liverpool ONE shopping centre is an alternative art gallery with a cafe and lovely outdoor square. Sitting with a coffee listening to the birds sing is a peaceful experience in otherwise busy Liverpool city centre. This independent venue started life as a boarding school for poor children. Now the oldest building in Liverpool city centre, it’s also one of the most captivating. Tour exhibitions by local artists, many with a social conscience. Address: School Lane, L1 3BX. Opening times: 11am-5pm, Wednesday-Sunday. Entry fee: free!

Dinner option #1 – Chinatown

Chinatown arch

While spending 1 day in Liverpool, be sure to visit Chinatown , home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe (something you’ll know if you were paying attention at the museums earlier!). Shop at Chung Wah supermarket or eat a fantastic meal at one of the many highly-rated restaurants. Chamber 36  serves pan-Asian cuisine and cocktails while Yuet Ben has been serving authentic Northern Chinese cuisine since 1968. A couple of other places of interest near Chinatown include:

  • The Bombed Out Church (St Luke’s) – this church on the corner of Berry Street and Leece Street is now a cultural arts centre, cafe and garden bar. Visit ’til 10.30pm.
  • Rodney Street – hidden away from the city centre, this grand street of houses is one of the most historic places in Liverpool. For TV filming , the paved road is removed to reveal atmospheric cobbles beneath. Stroll down it to see where Peaky Blinders was shot.

Dinner option #2 – Duke Street Market

duke street food market

A handful of cool Liverpool food markets have sprung up in the last couple of years. One is Duke Street Market , a stylish food court with seating upstairs and downstairs. Eat tacos and burritos at Big Lola’s or Asian bowls at Ginger . It’s not the cheapest place to eat but it’s not the most expensive either: most main dishes are around £12. They also serve excellent coffee and cake, plus a huge range of drinks. Food times: Weds & Thurs ’til 9pm, Fri & Sat ’til 10pm and Sun ’til 8pm. From Weds to Sun, it stays open later but just for drinks.

Dinner option #3 – the Baltic Market

pad thai

For hipster dinner and drinks, finish your Liverpool day trip by walking 20 minutes from Chinatown to the Baltic Market , a colourful indoor marketplace popular with young people. Don’t expect anything gourmet but do expect excellent cocktails and fun foodie options like pizza, f ried chicken and Greek, Korean and Thai food. My friend and I shared halloumi fries and chicken katsu curry fries before I moved onto pad Thai and she ordered (much too much) Greek food including tzatziki, pitta, chicken souvlaki and, perhaps the highlight, feta rolls glazed with honey. What a feast! We spent about £20 each including drinks. Opening times: 5pm-10pm Weds & Thurs; 12pm-11pm Fri; 11am-11pm Sat; 11am-10pm Sun. Tip – the Baltic Market is quite far from Lime Street Station so I’d recommend calling an Uber on the way home. Liverpool is a safe city but it’s never fun walking at night especially as the market isn’t in the best-lit part of town.

I ended my day in Liverpool by hopping on a 9pm train arriving back in Manchester for 10pm. It was a busy day but worth it. Safe travels!

I’m usually left unsatisfied by one-day tours that I read, because I feel like they don’t cover a lot of ground, but I loved reading this one! I’m hoping I can squeeze it all into my day and I can’t wait to get to Liverpool 🙂

Hi Al, thanks for reading and commenting. I’m glad you enjoyed the itinerary and hope you love Liverpool… It’s a great city!

trip ke liverpool

This was a perfect 1 day itinerary! Let me say Rose does not lead you a stray with her food recommendations! We started our morning with a pastry and coffee from Rough Home Made, which gave us an opportunity to visit the docks, stroll by the waterfront and power up for the British Museum Experience. The BME was a fun experience with some great artifacts. However, several major British artists were not represented or barely mentioned such as Led Zeppelin (1 mention), Elton John (3 pairs of glasses), Rolling Stones (minimum mentions), The Police (no mention), Adele (1 mention) and a little disappointing. However, Joe who was in the “play” section was a wonderful ambassador and gave us tons of stories and information. We walked down Queen Anne Street and then over to the Cavern Club. Be aware that the original Cavern Club no longer exists. It was rebuilt a few doors up and cost £5 to go into. Lastly, we went in search of Chinatown. On our walk, we passed the Duke Street Market that was inviting, but we pressed ahead. We found the gate, but the holy grail is across the street…..Chamber 36! The pan-asian food is delicious there was not an item that we did not like and the service was like a neighborhood hangout! It was an outstanding experience! Thanks Rose for all the wonderful recommendations. we enjoyed our visit to Liverpool!

Hi Karen, wow thanks for such a detailed comment! I’m so glad you had a good day and especially that you enjoyed the food suggestions. Rough Hand Made have the best croissants ever!!

Guide to the best things to do in Liverpool

What To Do In Liverpool: Two Day Itinerary

Europe , Travel , UK | August 27, 2019

Liverpool has undergone a huge regeneration to establish itself as one of the best tourism destinations in the UK, boasting the largest collection of galleries and museums outside of London and (I’ll fight you on this) the friendliest locals in the country. There are so many fun things to do in Liverpool!

The city is as famous for its rich maritime history as it is for the musical legends it has produced, its nightlife is as alluring as the local food scene, and Liverpool’s shops hold as much lure as its cultural attractions.

My Dad is from Liverpool so the city holds a special place in my heart, but in all my years of visiting family there I’d never done Liverpool’s tourist attractions!

Keen to correct that with the help of the lovely people at Visit Liverpool , I set off to discover all the best things to do and see in Liverpool for two fabulous days.

Best things to do in Liverpool: art and culture

Liverpool has such a unique personality and is a fun place to be, day or night.

I’ve put together a guide to all the top things to do in Liverpool on a 48 hour visit – and many of the attractions listed in this Liverpool itinerary are completely free. I hope it makes you consider a trip!

Best Things To Do In Liverpool: My Two Day Guide

1. explore the albert dock.

Liverpool’s historic Royal Albert Dock has transformed into an aesthetically pleasing leisure destination with an array of independent shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and local attractions.

When the sun is shining, you could easily spend the whole morning there without spending a penny (though who can resist an ice cream from the van?) This area houses the largest collection of Grade I listed buildings in England.

If you’ve arrived in Liverpool hungry, grab coffee and a pastry from family-run bakery Rough Hand Made to keep you going until lunchtime.

Liverpool's Royal Albert Dock

There’s a calendar of events taking place in the Dock over the summer months, including a pop-up outdoor cinema on the water!

If you’re stuck for things to do in Liverpool when it rains, you won’t be short of indoor attractions. Art lovers can visit Tate Liverpool , which runs various contemporary art shows throughout the year.

Liverpool Tate: one of the best attractions in Albert Dock

If you’re enjoying a weekend break with your partner and looking for romantic things to do in Liverpool, eternalise your devotion by putting a love lock on the chains around the water.

2. Eat lunch in the Royal Albert Dock

After a morning at Albert Dock we stopped for lunch at Peaberry Coffee House , an independent artisan cafe that’s just along from Tate Liverpool. They use local ingredients wherever possible, so eating there supports the local economy. Their homemade bagels are delicious and they do a mean flat white!

3. Explore Liverpool’s Museums

Those visiting Liverpool on a budget will be happy to learn that loads of the museums offer free entry. If the weather doesn’t play nice, you can spend a whole day taking advantage Liverpool’s indoor attractions without blowing loads of cash.

Depending on your interests, visit one of the free museums located on the waterfront: The International Slavery Museum and the Merseyside Maritime Museum are housed in the same building.

We popped into the latter and I was fascinated by the exhibition about Lusitania. The Titanic may have been immortalised in film, but this vessel’s story is just as tragic!

Liverpool Maritime Museum

The Museum of Liverpool is hugely impressive and fun for kids as well as adults. There, you can learn how the port and Liverpudlians themselves have shaped their city, and in turn changed the world.

The museum is an absolute Liverpool must-visit and the views from those floor-to-ceiling windows are breathtaking!

Liverpool's museum: best free attraction in the city

4. Learn about The Beatles Story

The city is famous worldwide for four floppy haired local lads who changed the face of music, so even casual fans of The Beatles should devote part of their city break in Liverpool to following the fab four’s adventures.

At The Beatles Story you can tour through replicas of the Casbah, Mathew Street and The Cavern in the early 60s, learning about the band’s journey to fame using an audio guide. I certainly learned a lot!

Liverpool Beatles Story attraction

5. Have a drink in The Cavern Quarter

Once you’ve completed The Beatles Story, head over to Matthew Street and grab a selfie with John Lennon’s statue (Cilla Black, too!).

You can hole up in a dark corner of the iconic Cavern Club with a drink and catch a live band hoping to follow in Paul, John, Ringo and George’s footsteps.

Liverpool Matthew Street

If you would like to delve deeper into The Beatles’ experiences of their home city, you can do a full Beatles tour of Liverpool on this combined bus and walking tour with a local guide.

There’s also the relatively new Magical Beatles Museum , which has never-before-seen memorabilia. One for the true fans!

Liverpool Cavern Club

6. Enjoy dinner in the city

We had a fabulous meal at newly opened Mason’s on Seel Street. The restaurant is the first from hospitality chain EPIC and located directly under the hotel. The duck was to die for, but the sharing platters are a great option for catch-ups with friends.

Where to eat dinner in Liverpool: Masons Restaurant

7. Spend the evening at a cocktail bar

Liverpool’s nightlife attracts parties of stags and hens all year round, but if you just want to enjoy a drink or two in town there are loads of great cocktail bars to choose from.

Try Liberte on Brunswick Street, or head to Slater Street for Santa Chupitos and The Merchant . Neighbourhood on Castle Street is the place to be seen at the moment but if you’d prefer a more covert operation, Berry and Rye on Berry Street has a speakeasy vibe.

8. Join The Brunch Club

A night out in Liverpool means you will DEFINITELY need a decent feed when you surface the next day. We had an amazing brunch at The Brunch Club on Duke Street. Their mushrooms on toast is something I’ll crave when I’m rough for the rest of my life! Also, the interior decor is very Instagram friendly.

Best place for brunch in Liverpool: The Bruch Club for instagram friendly interiors and eggs!

Alternatively, Duke Street Market is opposite The Brunch Club and houses six independent food stalls, a flagship restaurant, three bars and a florist. I peeked in and it’s definitely more upmarket than your average food market. It’s on my to-visit list for my next trip.

Other local faves are Lock and Key (also on Duke Street), Moose for pancakes on Dale Street (prepare for queues) or LEAF on Bold Street.

9. Take the RLB360 tour

This was perhaps the best thing I did in Liverpool. For the first time ever, you can now tour the majestic Royal Liver Building !

The RLB360 tour commences in the basement and involves lifts and stairs, so you need to be physically able to climb. I learned so much and would recommend the tour to anyone even remotely interested in Liverpool’s history.

Best cultural things to do in Liverpool: tour the Royal Liver Building

Afterwards, head across the the waterfront to take in Liverpool’s majestic ‘Three Graces’.

Liverpool three graces

10. Immerse yourself in the British Music Experience

The British Music Experience in Liverpool’s landmark Cunard building (right next door the to Liver Building) is a fun, educational walk through the British music scene, from The Beatles to X Factor finalists.

The exhibition is mainly made up of memorabilia and outfits worn by the stars but there are also some interactive things, like a vocal booth and dance studio that will keep kids entertained.

Liverpool's British Music Experience

11. Go shopping at Liverpool ONE

Liverpool is an excellent city for shopping, and the mammoth Liverpool ONE complex is the place to spend. It has all the glitzy shops you can think of.

Best place for shopping in Liverpool

If you need a little sustenance to fuel your spending, look no further than Chavasse Park , on top of Liverpool ONE. You’ll find a variety of restaurants and bars up there, with loads of outdoor seating if the sun happens to bless your weekend in Liverpool with its appearance.

Clayton Square is a good place to find bargains while there are loads of independent businesses on Bold Street if you prefer quirky stuff.

12. Eat a final dinner in Liverpool

For your final meal in Liverpool, the rooftop bar and restaurant Matau is sure to impress. I’ve previously eaten at Alma de Cuba for a special occasion and it was fab: the building is an 18th century church and they serve Latin-inspired food by candlelight, then the place becomes a party after dark!

13. Toast the end of two days in Liverpool with drinks in Concert Square

Concert Square is a nightlife hub that’s popular with Liverpudlians, students and tourists alike. Grab a table outside Soho and watch the world go by!

We actually ended up there twice during our short visit. It’s just such a great place to people watch (and Liverpool has some real characters, so the show is always top-notch).

Liverpool's Concert Square

More things to do in Liverpool

If you have more time to explore Liverpool, check out these slightly more offbeat points of interest and activities in the city:

  • Tour Anfield Stadium and the Club’s interactive museum, The Liverpool FC Story, The Steven Gerrard Collection exhibition and all six European cups on this tour .
  • Take a 50 minute cruise on the Mersey
  • Do a Peaky Blinders bus tour of Liverpool where you see more than ten locations from the show
  • Do a historical ghost tour of the city
  • See Liverpool from above by going to the top of the iconic Radio City Tower to take in panoramic views from the 400-foot (121-meter) high observation deck.
  • See Open Eye Gallery , an independent not-for-profit photography gallery on the Waterfront. Entry is free!
  •  Watch a show at the  Everyman , Empire or  Playhouse  theatres, the  Philharmonic Hall  or  Echo Arena .
  • See Liverpool Cathedral (the largest in Britain!) and the Metropolitan Cathedral on Hope Street
  • Grab a bite in China Town and see the Chinese Arch
  • Go to Crosby Beach to see Antony Gormley’s ‘Another Place’:100 cast-iron, life-size figures spread out along three kilometres of the foreshore
  • See St Luke’s Church , or ‘the Bombed Out Church’ as it’s known locally

Where to stay in Liverpool

We were hosted by EPIC Hotel on Seel Street and thought it was the ideal base for our two days in Liverpool. The staff couldn’t do enough for you (but that’s just a Scouse thing!), the design was super slick and fun, and the beds were very comfortable.

It’s near Concert Square and takes just a few minutes to walk from the hotel to Liverpool ONE and the Albert Dock.

Best places to stay in Liverpool

My mum usually stays at the nearby The Nadle r as she likes the location but having spent two nights at EPIC Hotel, she said she’s converted and will be booking her new favourite in future.

If you’re on a tight budget and just need somewhere cheap and cheerful, I’ve also spent a night at CARO Short Stay . It’s basic but surprisingly nice!

On the more luxury end of the scale, I reviewed The Titanic Hotel in the docks recently and would definitely recommend. You can check prices and availability here .

Alternatively, The Shankly and the Beatles-themed Hard Day’s Night are popular choices.

For groups (hen and stag parties, take note), I’ve stayed at Signature Living apartments on a hen do and we couldn’t fault it.

How to get to Liverpool

I travelled to Liverpool by train and arrived at Lime Street Station. EPIC Hotel is a ten minute walk from there. I use TrainGenius to find the cheapest UK train fares.

It’s a walkable destination and you wouldn’t need to pay for taxis etc if you’re physically fit, but rainy days might call for cover! The Hop On Hop Off bus is a good option for getting around Liverpool if the weather doesn’t go in your favour.

I may be biased, but if you’re visiting Liverpool I think you should also book a ferry trip to my home, Isle of Man and experience island life for a few days. Check out my list of things to do in Isle of Man if you’re tempted!

The beatles story.

Ticket Price: 17 GBP

Recommended Length of Stay: 2-3 Hours

Location: Britannia Vaults, Kings Dock Street, Liverpool L3 4AD

Albert Dock brings us not only the memories of Liverpool 's past as a maritime trading port, but also the incomparable nostalgia and intoxication for the Beatles. The Beatles are a British rock band. They have multi-style innovations in musical techniques, sold hundreds of millions of records worldwide, won 8 Grammy Awards, and were awarded the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 1965. Using "immortal legend" to describe the Beatles is a little pale. Years later, this British rock band has been regarded as a great band in the history of world rock music. Although the death of the band's soul John Lennon made the resurrection of the Beatles a dream that could never be realized, their music still remains Infecting the world, touching people's heartstrings, the enthusiasm of fans has also increased. In the Beatles Memorial, you can see guitars, microphones, iconic glasses and even his manuscripts and autographed photos used by the band's soul frontman John Lennon, and the museum displays songs from The Beatles from the obscure pub Every step of the star journey to the glorious FlowerGeneration period. The classic song "Image" echoed in the pavilion, and I believe that many people could not help but sigh for John Lennon, an unsurpassed genius in the music industry. You can also buy a lot of Beatles souvenirs in the museum, such as badges, commemorative shirts, guitar picks, etc. Visitors can also sign up for the "Legend Tour" and take a sightseeing bus to get a thorough understanding of the places related to the Beatles. everything about them.

Royal Albert Dock Liverpool

Opening Hours: Open 24 hours

Ticket Price: Free

Location: 3-4 The Colonnades, Liverpool L3 4AA, UK

Albert Dock is an important attraction when you come to Liverpool, and it is a heritage building protected by British law. In 1846, Prince Albert praised the construction of the Dockyard at the inauguration of the Dockyard. This is one of the world's enclosed fire-resistant docks. It was once considered one of the most technologically advanced docks in the world. The port has made a great contribution. Architectural historian Berwick Nukins called Albert Dock a masterpiece of industrial architecture. However, due to the gradual decline of maritime trade, the dock has changed from prosperity to decline since the end of the 19th century, and gradually lost its original function. Due to the protection of the national industrial architectural heritage in the United Kingdom, it has been developed into a complex leisure tourist attraction integrating museums and restaurants. Here, you can go to the Merseyside Maritime Museum to explore Liverpool's maritime trade history, indulge in the artistic atmosphere of the Tate Liverpool, and even here, you and the Beatles will have a classic encounter. Travel back in time to that golden age with a trip to the Beatles Memorial. Or just take a nap on the riverside chair, there is sunshine and seabirds, it is very simple and beautiful.

Trip.com User: When I stayed at a hotel nearby, I couldn't be so happy to walk around the river every morning.

Day 3 | Evening

If you want to explore other popular attractions later, Novotel Liverpool Paddington Village is a suitable place for you to stay and refresh.

Day 4 | Morning

Liverpool cathedral.

Opening Hours: Open from 11:00am-3:00pm

Location: St James Mt, Liverpool L1 7AZ, UK

Liverpool Cathedral is the largest church in the United Kingdom, also known as the Cathedral of Christ in Liverpool (Catherdral Church of Chris in Liverpool), which is also the fifth largest cathedral in the world. Its architectural style combines traditional Gothic and more modern monument styles. The single-tower design was an innovation at the time, with a tower height of 101 meters and a built-in clock, the third largest in the world. It is worth mentioning that this magnificent and solemn religious building was actually created by a 22-year-old young man. In 1902, Giles Gilbert Scott, who was only 22 years old, was selected in the design competition of Liverpool Cathedral. Although it also caused a lot of controversy, Scott's family background in Gothic style (father and grandfather have designed and built many church) did not let the project run aground. In 1904, King Edward laid the foundation stone and the church began to be built. However, due to the downturn of the national economy and the impact of the World War, in 1978, after a lapse of 76 years, the main part of the church was officially completed, and Queen Elizabeth II participated in the completion. ceremony. It is a pity that Scott passed away in 1960. He did not wait for the day when his works were presented, but Scott not only left this beautiful church, but also the iconic red telephone booth in London. To this day, Liverpool Cathedral is an outstanding example of church architecture in the world. It attracts many tourists every year. The beautiful stained glass in the church depicts stories about the Bible. There are also more species in the world. Large and heavier chime pipe organ with a total of 9765 pipes. When the weather is good, you can climb the clock tower and get a great view of the city.

Trip.com User: So epic and Gothic I d love to visit inside when covid over

The 5 best Liverpool day trips

With easy transportation links to the north and south, Liverpool offers several opportunities for day trips to the seaside, nearby cities, historic towns and hilly hikes. After spending a few days exploring one of England ’s most fascinating cities, head out for one of these five incredible day trips.

off to the beach

Visit Southport for a classic day out at the seaside

Travel time: 47 minutes

The rich aromas of vinegar and hot sugar waft through the Southport air, while delighted screams from roller coasters echo out to sea. Situated on England’s western coast, Southport embodies what many consider a classic English seaside experience.

Central to Southport’s coastal experience is the pier – Britain's second longest. It’s stocked with crazy golf, a beautiful old Victorian canopy and shopping arcade, plus vintage arcade machines (sneak a giggle at the “Saucy Slots” – vintage automatic peep shows).

Be sure to check out the British Lawnmower Museum to indulge in the country’s love of a well-maintained garden (trust us, it’s fascinating). Nearby Pleasureland offers traditional funfair activities, such as coasters and thrill rides and games like ring toss and basketball shootouts.

For the best of the bounty the sea has to offer, the Swan Restaurant is a must for fish and chips. After, drop by Silcock's Ice Cream Parlour for ice cream or a freshly fried doughnut.

How to get to Southport from Liverpool

Jump on the direct Merseyrail train from Liverpool Central Station to Southport. It takes around 47 minutes, and you get to kick back, relax, and check out the scenery as you travel. It costs about £7.55 ($9.30) for an adult Anytime Return ticket that you can buy at the station or using the Trainline app.

By car it’s approximately an hour to Southport from central Liverpool. The best car park is on the Lower Parade just by the Bliss Hotel as it tends to be quieter than the more centrally located ones. You'll also enjoy a walk by the lake as you head to the main attractions.

View along the main street in the centre of Chester, Cheshire, UK. Shops can be seen on either side of the road and people can be seen walking and sitting on benches. The rows of upper level shops are pictured on left.

Head to Chester to walk your way around Roman history

Travel time: 40 minutes

Centuries of history are intertwined with modern shops and restaurants in Chester. Founded by the Romans over 2000 years ago, it’s one of the oldest walled cities in Britain, and Roman remains, Tudor-style half-timber buildings and Art Deco architecture are all within a short walk of each other.

Chester's food and drink outlets range from independent cafes like Jaunty Goat Coffee to the Michelin-starred hypha . For the perfect stroll, head to the Roman walls, which encircle the city on an easy 2-mile (3.2km) loop. Spend some time peering at Eastgate Clock (pun intended) – this is considered England’s most photographed clock after Big Ben. For a snack, head to Dinky Donuts, a “blink and you’ll miss it” snack shop hidden by the stairs leading up to the city walls beneath the clock... Or grab an ice cream from Snugbury’s on the River to eat along the River Dee.

How to get to Chester from Liverpool

To get to Chester from Liverpool, you can take the direct Merseyrail train from Liverpool Central or Lime Street. It takes about 40 minutes and costs around £8.25 ($10.16) for an Anytime Day Return ticket.

If going by car, it takes around 45 minutes, but you'll need £2 ($2.46) toll money at the ready for a trip through the Mersey Tunnel (payable both ways). You also need to budget some money for parking.

Go to Manchester for art, music and a city with football at its heart

Travel time: 1 hour

Today Manchester is known as much for its art, music and football as it is for its significance in the Industrial Revolution. With the vast array of mostly free museums , you can dive into the history of the people, place and even football without leaving the city center. Time it right and you can do almost everything in a single day.

The city's Northern Quarter is known for its food and drink scene, from the piled-high plates of vegan junk food at V-Rev diner to the rooftop terrace at 20 Stories , and vintage vibes and cocktails at Sammy’s Cocktail Bar .

Shopaholics will find plenty to browse in Manchester’s indy stores. Oklahoma and Manchester Craft and Design Centre offer quirky and artist-made products. Add a nice pop of color or a new curio to your home collection.

The '90s British game show The Crystal Maze lives on at its real-life incarnation in Manchester : teams compete to solve puzzles and overcome physical and mental challenges. Afterward, relive the experience over a drink in the backstreet arcade bar NQ64 .

With the right shoes (and an umbrella), walking is a wonderful way to explore Manchester. Invisible Manchester hosts walking tours guided by people affected by homelessness. Alternatively, local guide Hayley Flynn's Skyliner tours provide an equally unique look at the city and its people.

How to get to Manchester from Liverpool

To get to Manchester take the train from Liverpool Lime Street Station direct to Manchester Piccadilly. The price ranges from £8.80 for an advance return ticket to £21.30 for an Anytime Day Return, so it is worth planning for this day out.

The car journey takes around an hour. There is plenty of parking around the city, but it can be expensive.

Visit Port Sunlight for architecture and manufacturing history

Travel time: 18 minutes

In the late 19th century, Victorian entrepreneur Lord Lever needed a spot to house the staff for his soap factory. He purchased a plot of land in Cheshire and established the model village of Port Sunlight (the name comes from their best-selling brand of detergent). Today Port Sunlight is a worthwhile day trip from Liverpool, both a quiet and relaxing village that tells the story of the local industry, while also providing plenty of tea rooms and pubs to while away an afternoon or an evening.

The village showcases an interesting range of architectural styles, many influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement and its focus on local design and materials. The Port Sunlight museum tells of the growth of the soap factory, which became a global leader and remains one of the largest manufacturers today.

How to get to Port Sunlight from Liverpool

To get to Port Sunlight, you can take the Merseyrail trail direct from Liverpool stations. Prices are around £4.35 ($5.36) for an Anytime Day Return ticket for one adult and take 18 minutes on a direct train.

If you're taking the car, it will be approximately 25 minutes. You'll need to take £4 ($4.93) for the toll in the Liverpool Tunnel, £2 ($2.46) each way. There is free parking in Port Sunlight, but it can get busy.

Take in picturesque views at Frodsham and the Cheshire Sandstone Trail

Travel time: 1 hour, 15 minutes

Frodsham is a market town dating back to the 13th century. Many of today’s buildings still stand on the original plots that were drawn up in the 13th and 14th centuries. The thatched buildings, small doorways and winding side streets add to the picturesque charm of this Cheshire town.

The characterful old Fisherman’s Cottages perched atop a red sandstone outcrop far above the main road are some of the most intriguing. Fishing was once a vital trade for the town’s economy, and these cottages stood at the water’s edge. As water levels have fallen over the years, the cottages sit far from the rivers.

The town is also the starting point for the Cheshire Sandstone Trail, a 34-mile trail along the Cheshire Way. While it is far too much to do on a day trip, you can make your way up Frodsham Hill to the War Memorial for spectacular views over Cheshire and Liverpool.

End your day trip at one of the town’s many warm and welcoming old pubs such as the Ring O Bells , ideally situated for refreshments on your way up or down Frodsham Hill.

How to get to Frodsham from Liverpool

To get to Frodsham, take the train from Liverpool Lime Street Station to Frodsham. It takes 1 hour 15 minutes and the Off-Peak Day Return ticket costs £8.40 ($10.28).

You can drive from Liverpool to Frodsham, which will take around 50 minutes (or 40 on the toll road). There are many car parks in Frodsham where you pay and display the time you spend there.

Selanjutnya, ikuti tahapan berikut:
