Concert film [ ]

The 1989 World Tour Live is a concert film by Taylor Swift. It was released on December 20, 2015, exclusively via Apple Music. Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, the film follows the Sydney stop of Swift's fourth headlining concert tour, The 1989 World Tour. The show, which was attended by 75,980 fans, remains Swift's most attended concert to date.

Signs were displayed at the sold out Sydney concert on November 28, 2015, at ANZ Stadium which said "Today's events are being recorded and filmed for global streaming, and may also form part of a television program... for commercial and promotional purposes." Although there was no further information about what the filming was for at the time, there was speculation that it would form a DVD of the 1989 World Tour to be released once the tour concluded its run in Melbourne in late 2015. Later speculation involved an Apple Music Video launch, which was proved to be correct. Coincidentally, " All You Had to Do Was Stay " and " This Love " were added back into the show after having been left off the set list for several months. This makes the Sydney setlist identical to that of Tokyo when the tour premiered.

On December 13, 2015 — Swift's 26th birthday—she announced she had partnered with Apple Music to release a concert film entitled The 1989 World Tour Live in one weeks' time. It contains over two hours of concert, interview, and never-before seen backstage and rehearsal footage with some of the musical and surprise guests from previous shows. Celebrities making appearances in the film include Mick Jagger, Jason Derulo, Idina Menzel, Justin Timberlake, Wiz Khalifa, and Alanis Morissette. It was directed by Jonas Åkerlund. Clips from the film were later compiled for the music video for the seventh and final single from the album, " New Romantics ".

The custom stage built for the 1989 Tour is one-of-a-kind. It was a classic catwalk shape that's 100 ft long but the center part could detach from the main catwalk. It a was semi-modular type design able to rise up and do a 360° turn, it permitted to get closer to fans, the technology was like a propeller system.

Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy will be main support along the North American tour while singer, songwriter and viral sensation Shawn Mendes will support the global superstar along her North American stadium dates. “The 1989 World Tour” will encompass eight countries and span four continents including North America, Europe, Australia and Asia**. Last year, the North American portion of Taylor's sold out “The RED Tour” played to more than 1.36 million fans over 66 shows (including 13 stadium stops) in 47 cities in 29 states. Also in 2013, Taylor took “The RED Tour” Down Under -- performing sold out stadium shows in Australia (as well as arena dates in New Zealand), becoming the first solo female artist in twenty years to undertake a national stadium concert tour of Australia. In addition, “The RED Tour” visited Europe for six sold-out shows in 2014. Taylor Swift, who writes all of her own songs, is a global superstar, seven-time GRAMMY winner and the youngest winner in history of the music industry's highest honor, the GRAMMY “Award for Album of the Year.” Taylor is the only artist in music history to have an album (2010's “Speak Now,” 2012's “RED” and 2014's “1989”) hit the 1 million plus first-week sales figure three times. She is the first artist since the Beatles (and the only female artist in history) to log six or more weeks at #1 in the U.S. with three consecutive studio albums. Taylor has an album on Rolling Stone's prestigious “The 50 Greatest Albums of All Time” (by women) list, Time magazine has named her one the of the “100 Most Influential People” in the world, and she is Billboard's youngest-ever “Woman of the Year” and the only artist to have been awarded this honor twice. Taylor has career record sales in excess of 30 million albums and almost 80 million song downloads worldwide, and has had singles top both the pop and country radio charts around the globe. Taylor's album “RED” (Big Machine Records), released two years ago, sold more than 1.2 million copies in the U.S. in its first week, scoring the highest first-week sales debut of any album in over a decade. "Shake It Off,” the first single off her critically acclaimed fifth studio album “1989,” topped Billboard’s Pop, Hot AC and Hot 100 charts and has earned double Platinum-status by the RIAA for exceeding sales of two million downloads in the U.S., and has peaked at No. 1 in 64 countries on iTunes. “1989” topped iTunes’ sales charts in 95 countries on its release and was the highest selling first week release of 2014.

taylor swift 1989 world tour cd

"The 1989 World Tour" was the fourth concert tour by Taylor, in support of her fifth studio album, " 1989 " (2014). The tour began on May 5, 2015, in Tokyo, Japan, and concluded on December 12, 2015 in Melbourne, Australia, the day before her 26th birthday. It became Taylor's highest grossing and most attended tour at the time, mobilizing 2'278'647 fans and $250'733'097 in revenue. It was the highest grossing tour in the world in 2015.

Taylor’s fourth time around obliterated her previous box office revenue and delivered an electrifying show that reached many new heights for the superstar -- literally, as she danced on a massive rotating platform the entire duration of “Shake It Off.”

The "1989 World Tour" included a massive roster of nightly special guests, some of whom weren’t even musicians: Ellie Goulding, Alanis Morissette, Fifth Harmony, Fetty Wap, Justin Timberlake, Lisa Kudrow (performing as her Friendscharacter Phoebe), Selena Gomez and even Ellen DeGeneres were among Taylor’s celebrity friends to help her take the stage for the spectacle.

But for those who weren’t so lucky to be one of the 2 million-plus fans in attendance, Apple Music released a concert film shortly after the tour wrapped. On December 13, 2015, Swift announced that she had partnered with Apple Music to release a concert film entitled " The 1989 World Tour Live " on December 20, 2015. It was filmed at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on November 28, 2015, her largest show to date with 75,980 attendees.

BACKGROUND AND DEVELOPMENT

The tour was announced via Taylor's Twitter on November 3, 2014 in which she said: "#The1989WorldTour is happening!" before giving a link to her website where fans could find out the list of dates. It was also revealed that Vance Joy would be joining her on tour, and that tickets would go sale on for North American fans on November 14. The tour's European, as well as two shows in Japan, were also announced in November 2014, followed by the Oceania dates in December 2014. Additional dates for Singapore and Shanghai were announced in June 2015 with a third and final Melbourne show announced in July 2015.

In an interview with Time Magazine, Taylor said that "the setlist will be predominantly songs from "1989":

"I have so many things I've been dreaming up for this. If you look at the makeup of my previous music, as far as production elements go, there are a lot of live drums, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and live bass. And if you look at the landscape of '1989', it's mostly synths and automated drums and these kind of big epic synth pad sounds, and key bass, and layered vocals. I have a very big band, there are, what, 14 of us, so what you’re going to end up with is more of a live feel in that it's going to be filled in and more dramatic with more layers to it, but never to the point where it's going to feel noisy or overcrowded." -- Taylor Swift

Taylor also acknowledged the challenge of playing to stadiums, stating that "the challenge with a stadium show is making those people in the very top row feel like they got an intimate, personal experience." The following month in an interview with KIIS-FM, she revealed that she knew what the stage would look like, as well as knowing that "all the fans seem to be saying that they really don't want any song [from "1989"] left off the setlist".

The tour took seven months to plan before three months of music rehearsals, four weeks of stage rehearsals and ten days of two-a-days dress rehearsals. It traveled with 26 semi-trailer trucks and 11 buses carrying 146 people from city to city. Additionally, about 125-150 people were hired in each city to help with the load in and stage setup. The entire load in and stage setup process took between 6 and 8 hours for arenas, with stadiums requiring an additional day. Many of the traveling crew members had worked on Taylor's tours since the " Fearless" era . Taylor chose two designs for the trucks' vinyl wrap; 13 carried one design and 13 had the other.

Signs were displayed at the sold out Sydney concert on November 28, 2015 at ANZ Stadium which said "Today's events are being recorded and filmed for global streaming, and may also form part of a television program...for commercial and promotional purposes." Although there was no further information about what the filming was for at the time, there was speculation that it would form a DVD of the "1989 World Tour" to be released once the tour concludes its run in Melbourne in late 2015. Later speculation involved an Apple Music video launch, which was proved to be correct. Coincidentally, "All You Had To Do Was Stay" and "This Love" were added back into the show after having been left off the set list for several months. This makes the Sydney setlist identical to that of Tokyo when the tour premiered.

On December 13, 2015 (Taylor's 26th birthday), she announced she had partnered with Apple Music to release a concert film entitled " The 1989 World Tour Live " on December 20. Filmed in front of 75'980 fans during her stop at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on November 28, it shows the entire performance and never-before seen footage from backstage and from rehearsals with some of the musical and surprise guests from previous shows.

The Clean Speech

taylor swift 1989 world tour cd

As is tradition for her tours, Taylor regularly hosted after-show meet and greets for some of her lucky fans. During the concert, her mom Andrea and some members of Taylor Nation carefully watched the crowd to see which fans were the most excited to be there. The bigger the poster, the shinier the costume, the better. If chosen, fans got to enter the backstage VIP experience Loft ’89 backstage hangout after the end of the show. The space was inspired by Taylor’s own New York City apartment that fans had become deeply familiar through her social media. The setup included brick walls, couches, and foods including pizza and homemade cookies.

During the fan meetup, fans would wait around on couches, chatting with others until Taylor would come out to greet them. To pass the time, Loft ’89 included artifacts that every super fan would recognize from previous tours or photoshoots, as well as additional photo opportunities. When Taylor eventually showed up, she would spend time with each group of people, getting to know them and cracking jokes. They would then take a photo together and Taylor would sign one of their belongings, or a laminated tour photo.

I Decided To Listen To Every Taylor Swift Album After Finally Watching The Eras Tour - And I Think I Have A New Favorite Era

I feel like a born-again Swiftie.

I have a confession: I fell out of love with Taylor Swift for a while.

I know, I know, it seemed that when everyone in the world was starting to fall even more in love with her, the music she made and her life didn’t hit as hard as my early-twenties self. While I heard plenty about Taylor Swift, from her mega Eras Tour to her friendships with Blake Lively or her years-long one with Selena Gomez, I hadn’t properly listened to her music in a long time.

Then, of course, The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) began streaming on Disney+ , and while I hadn’t gotten the chance to see it in theaters, I decided to check it out on my big TV at home and see what I had been missing.

Of course, there were plenty of songs I recognized, all from my earlier days of liking Taylor Swift, but when she got to many of her songs from Folklore, Evermore, and more, I didn’t know them that well. So after I watched the movie, I decided to listen to every Taylor Swift album again—and I’m surprised at which one has become my favorite -- evermore . But before we get to how that came to be, let's rewind a bit...

Taylor Swift singing Shake It Off in The Eras Tour concert film.

Initially, My Favorite Album/Era Of Hers Was 1989

I grew up as a pop girl. My father works in the wedding industry, and at every wedding he performs, pop is the leading music he plays. I grew up constantly listening to the latest pop music.

That usually meant that most Taylor Swift stuff—at least her earlier albums—wasn’t often played in my house. But you want to know what it was? 1989.

Her album, which really cemented her transition to pop, is one that I have distinct memories of and have always loved listening to. Whether blasting “Blank Space” in the car or dancing to “Shake It Off” at school dances, it was my Swift album of choice for a long time.

Red Was Always A Close Second, And Reputation Was In Third

While Red was more country than pop, that was undoubtedly my second favorite era of hers. I loved “I Knew You Were Trouble,” and I used to sing “All Too Well” at the top of my lungs for a very long time. I sang it even more than the 10-minute version (which is one of her best music videos ), but that’s beside the point.

My third favorite era was Reputation. When it first came out, Swift got some backlash for suddenly switching up her vibe and releasing music like “Look What You Made Me Do” and “Ready For It,” but I was eating it up. I adored this new version of her, and I was looking forward to the potential of more albums like this.

But, ashamedly, I fell off a bit afterward and continued to do so until now.

Her Earlier Albums Were Fun To Me, But Not My Favorite Era

You’re probably wondering when I’m going to mention Fearless, Speak Now, or even the O.G. Swift album, Taylor Swift. That’s because I am not the biggest fan.

Again, I grew up with pop blasting in my household, so country was never really a thing. Swift’s earlier albums are certainly a lot more country than anything else.

While there were plenty of great songs from those albums that I did listen to, like “Love Story,” “Our Song,” “You Belong With Me,” and plenty more, they never hit quite as hard as some of her others, which is what leads me to this now.

I Had Never Listened To Evermore – And I Regret Not Doing So

Evermore came out in 2020, a few months after Folklore and a year after Lover. I had listened to Lover and liked the vibe it brought, but it wasn’t an album I replayed repeatedly.

Then, of course, 2020 happened.

Life was turned upside down for a while, and I was more preoccupied with trying to graduate and find a job for a long time. Listening to the new T-Swift albums was not my number one priority.

But I decided to listen to her new albums for a long time after watching The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version). I liked the vibes both gave during the concert, so I thought maybe I would like the albums.

And I genuinely mean this from the bottom of my heart – I wish I had listened to Evermore sooner.

In the next section, I’ll go into detail about what I feel regarding Folklore and Midnights, but this section is for Evermore. I had never felt so seen during an album, so heard. I started listening to it and was instantly transported to another part of the world.

The songs on Evermore are so expertly written that I was shocked at how great they were. I mean, obviously, Taylor Swift is a talented writer when it comes to her lyrics, but I don’t think I was quite expecting the amount of lyrical genius in some of her songs on this album.

There are plenty of songs I could point out, but the one I have to highlight is “Champagne Problems.” I saw the performance of it in the concert film, but listening to it is on another level; hearing about a woman saying no to a proposal because she doesn’t feel ready, she’s not emotionally there to take that next step – it hits so hard, especially as a mid-twenties adult.

Folklore And Midnights Are A Great Representation Of Taylor Now, But Evermore Has Become My Absolute Favorite

I’ll openly say I liked Folklore and Midnights in my rewatching. Both have very different vibes but are written lyrically well and have some great hits. I was still dancing like crazy listening to “Karma” two years after her album came out – and thinking even more about how she changed the lyrics to represent her current relationship with Travis Kelce .

Taylor Swift leaning against a chair while singing Vigilante Shit.

If you love Taylor Swift, here is everything she has coming up.

But there’s just something about Evermore that hits the hardest, and I think I know what it is— Evermore feels like an album that describes a young woman’s twenties. Swift wrote this album when she was barely in her thirties, and it feels like I’m opening someone’s journal and reading their most profound problems, insecurities about life, and so much more.

At the end of the day, despite how magical and whimsical some of the songs felt, they all hit very close to home, as I’m sure they do for many others. It’s an album that was composed during a tough time in our lives that still hits nearly four years later. No matter what, we all have these insecurities, strange feelings, and so much more – and it’s nice to hear someone as big as Taylor Swift speak about them candidly.

I have to say that I am excited for her next album, The Tortured Poet’s Department. While I know all the Swifties are waiting for RepTV , I’m excited for another Era of Swift and what she’s going to bring. And this time, I will not skip any of the albums because I’m a fan, and it’s nice to be back in it after all these years.

Ka-ching! Taylor Swift lands on Forbes' World's Billionaires list with $1.1B net worth

taylor swift 1989 world tour cd

If Taylor Swift still has a "Blank Space," she can write in a dollar sign now.

The pop superstar, who reached billionaire status in October , landed on Forbes' World’s Billionaires list , the business magazine shared Tuesday. Among other celeb billionaires who made the cut – including Rihanna , Kim Kardashian , Oprah Winfrey and "Star Wars" creator George Lucas – Swift was ranked at No. 14 with a net worth of $1.1 billion.

Lucas topped the celebrity billionaires list with a whopping net worth of $5.5 billion.

However, Swift has made history with her economic achievement. The "Is It Over Now?" singer is the first person to reach billionaire status "based solely on songwriting and performing," according to Forbes.

“I think what’s really interesting is the proliferation of self-made billionaires,” Grace Chung, senior editor at Forbes magazine, told the Nashville Tennessean (part of the USA TODAY network) of Swift's distinction. “To be a self-made woman, not just an heir that inherited her wealth, is really exciting to see and also see it grow.”

Swift had a lucrative 2023, thanks in large part to her record-breaking Eras Tour , which became the first tour in history to earn more than $1 billion. The global trek, which Chung said makes up approximately 45% of Swift's net worth, took in an estimated ticket gross of $1.04 billion in 2023 from 4.35 million tickets sold, according to  music industry trade publication Pollstar .

Swift's U.S. concerts added an estimated $4.3 billion to the country’s gross domestic product in 2023, Bloomberg reported in October .

A concert film of the tour, "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," opened at the box office in October with earnings of $92.8 million. Within days, it became the highest-grossing concert film ever in North America, not accounting for inflation.

'It's completely up to you': Taylor Swift wins artist of the year at iHeartRadio Awards

The singer's expanding music catalog has also added to her wealth. In 2019, Swift released "Lover," the  first album she owned  after the masters to her first six albums were purchased by Scooter Braun via his acquisition of Big Machine Label Group. She has re-released four "Taylor's Version" editions of those albums since then, including "1989," " Fearless ," " Red " and " Speak Now ."

“After her first six albums, she singed that lucrative distribution deal with Universal Music (Group), which gave her monetary control over her work,” Chung said. “That’s something very few artists have.”

Swift's billionaire ranking follows a big night at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards on Monday. The singer, who was not in attendance, took home six awards, including artist of the year.

"I wanted to say thank you so much to anyone who voted for this award," said Swift in a recorded video. "To the fans, it's completely up to you to choose how you spend your time, what concerts you want to go to, what music do you want to make the soundtrack to your life, and to anyone who has included me in those choices, I'm so so so thankful for that."

Taylor Swift built an empire on relatable lyrics. Will her billionaire status change that?

Taylor Swift leans back and closes her eyes on stage in an orange dress as lights blur around her

For Swifties, it was never a matter of if Taylor Swift would become a billionaire, but when.

In its  latest rich list, Forbes estimates Swift has a $1.1 billion fortune and says the megastar is the first artist to achieve billionaire status solely from songwriting and performing.

Other artists who have hit the milestone – including Rihanna and Jay-Z – earned their massive wealth in part thanks to fashion and cosmetics brands, alcohol companies or entertainment holdings.

In mere weeks Swift will treat her fans to yet another album – The Tortured Poets Department – which will fuel another merchandising spectacle.

But by building an empire on her vulnerable lyrics and "big sister" persona, will Swift's new billionaire status impact how Swifties relate to their idol?

The (super rich) girl next door

Taylor Swift smiles and clasps the hands of a fan at one of her shows.

"Taylor has an amazing relationship with her fans, or at least an amazing illusion of a relationship with her fans," says Georgia Carroll, who holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Sydney where she specialised in fandom.

"It's something she's cultivated since the earliest days of her career, where she's really presented herself as not quite a girl next door, but kind of as the aspirational big sister or cool friend who is going through the same things as you are."

Swift's sprawling discography captures the plethora of emotions and experiences, from the giddiness of first love (Fearless, Speak Now) to the rollercoaster that is your 20s (Red, 1989) to darker, more adult themes (Reputation, Midnights).

"She's taken her fans on this lifelong journey where it does feel as though you're kind of getting this peek into her life and her diary, which really builds a connection with her fans," Dr Carroll says.

This all feeds back into the concept of parasocial relationships, which is, as Dr Carroll explains, "anytime a fan feels as though they know a celebrity because of messages through the media, from social media and, in Taylor's instance, through her music."

"So you feel as though you actually know her even though she's a stranger."

'You can see those dollar signs rolling in'

Since 2019, Swift has released eight albums – four being re-releases – and her next album is due out this month.

In 2023 her Eras Tour hit the $1 billion mark after selling a staggering 4.35 million tickets across 60 tour dates, according to the Associated Press.

Taylor Swift sings over her shoulder into a microphone as her hair blows around her against a fiery back drop

To add to its success, the concert film grossed a further $261 million worldwide and secured the highest opening weekend for a concert film.

For Dr Carroll, "nobody is surprised" about Swift's new billionaire status.

"It's been something that has been on the cards for quite a while especially with the Eras Tour and the Eras Tour film making her so much money and all of the stories around the records that they've broken and her economic impact," she says.

"In the last five years she's released this crazy amount of content which obviously has multiple album versions, multiple vinyl versions, merchandise alongside it.

"It's been this trajectory in the last five years, but especially the last 12 to 18 months, where you can see those dollar signs rolling in for her."

Swift's strategy of releasing limited edition versions of vinyl albums – each with a different cover, colour or bonus track – has drawn criticism over the years.

The debate fired up again this week when Billie Eilish expressed her frustration at overconsumption in the music industry.

"It's some of the biggest artists in the world making f**king 40 different vinyl packages that have a different unique thing just to get you to keep buying more. It's so wasteful," she told Billboard .

Eilish later clarified her comments and said she wasn't singling anyone out.

'Do I need to give a billionaire more of my money?'

Dr Carroll says while Swifties have a strong connection to their idol, it's the current economic environment that may have them pausing for thought rather than Swift's billionaire status.

Young women dressed in purple and sparkles line up at a merchandise booth where Taylor Swift shirts are sold

"We have The Tortured Poets Department coming out in three weeks so that's going to come with a new wave of merchandise and then the Eras Tour is starting up again in Europe," she said.

"I think we are reaching the point where fans are kind of like, 'The cost of living is going up, my rent is increasing, my mortgage is increasing, do I need to give a billionaire more of my money?'"

"But at the same time, her fans are so connected to her and so willing to support her that they see it as their choice."

"The argument I make is that the way her marketing is structured, they are in a way manipulating the fans, but it is the fans' choice at the end of the day and the fans can say, 'You know what, I can't afford this.'

"The argument the fans make is that it makes them happy and they like supporting her."

Dr Carroll adds the biggest impact Swift's billionaire status will have is by giving critics "more of a provable backbone."

"I think it's going to just give legs to any critiques and arguments that exist and the discussions that are had by people who aren't necessarily in the fandom."

But Dr Carroll says when it comes to fans spending money, "not so much [do] they see it as supporting A Billionaire with a capital A-B".

"They see it as supporting Taylor Swift, somebody who has been there for them over the years and who has brought them joy and brought their life meaning and they want to kind of continue that relationship."

Taylor Swift Officially Joins Forbes’ Billionaire List As One Of 14 Celebrity Billionaires

T aylor Swift, who became a billionaire late last year, was included on the annual Forbes Billionaires List for the first time Tuesday, joining 13 other celebrities, who have a collective estimated net worth of $31 billion.

Swift became a billionaire in October in large part because of her record-breaking Eras Tour, which became the first tour in history to gross more than $1 billion .

The Eras Tour grossed an estimated $1.04 billion off of its first 60 shows alone, according to estimates by Pollstar, and Swift’s tour has dates scheduled in Europe and North America through 2024.

With her October accomplishment, Swift joined four other billionaire musicians—Jay-Z, Rihanna and Jimmy Buffet—but is the first musician to become a billionaire solely based on her songs and performances without relying on a side-hustle.

Forbes estimated in October that about $500 million of her fortune was cash from music royalties and touring, another $500 million was from the increasing value of her music catalog—much of which she has been re-recording and releasing—and $125 million of her net worth came from real estate.

Forbes Valuation

Forbes estimates Swift’s net worth about $1.1 billion as of Tuesday afternoon.

14. That’s how many celebrities —including Swift—were on this year's Billionaires List. George Lucas, known for directing “Star Wars,” is the wealthiest celebrity on the list, in large part because of his production company Lucasfilm, which he sold to Disney in 2012. Jay-Z and Rihanna are the only other musicians on the 2024 list.

What To Watch For

The debut of Swift’s new album on April 19. She announced her 11th studio album—“The Tortured Poets Departments”—after winning Best Pop Vocal Album for “Midnights” at the Grammys in February. The album has 16 songs and one bonus track, and Swift has announced there are four variations of the album, each of which will have a different bonus track.

Key Background

Swift had a record breaking and memorable 2023. In addition to becoming a billionaire and launching her Eras Tour—which began as a retrospective of her 17-year career and 10 albums, but morphed into a financial phenomenon—Swift was named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year, began a relationship with Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce and released the “Eras Tour” film, which grossed more than $261 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo . Swift also released two re-records of previous albums—“Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” and “1989 (Taylor’s Version)”—last year as part of her quest to regain control of her first six albums, the rights to which sold by Scooter Braun to Shamrock Capital for $300 million, something Swift said happened behind her back. Swift’s accolades led her to join 264 other new billionaires on Forbes’ list this year, up from just 150 new billionaires the year before.

Moscow Circus Tour Includes 26 U.S. Cities

With all the promotional eclat of the old-fashioned American three-ring circus, the one-ring Moscow Circus announced yesterday the details of its tour of 26 American cities starting in November. The circus is to play Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan for a whole month beginning Jan. 10.

As a sampler, the wild-riding Nugzarov Horsemen, the Ibragimov Bears (they dance and do tricks), the Gibadulin Jugglers (they hurl and catch dishes with a dexterity that will shame the fastest waiter) and two clowns appeared in a brief performance at the Winter Garden of the World Financial Center. This is the complex that houses the American Express Travel Related Services Company, which is presenting the Soviet circus on its tour.

Steven E. Leber, the producer of the American tour, noted that this season's tour has scheduled almost twice as many cities as were booked in 1988-89. Mr. Leber said the circus would have to gross $21 million, or a half-million dollars a week, to be counted a successful venture.
