Jispa village – A quaint place to make memories – Complete Travel Guide

Jispa, a beautiful little town in the Lahaul district of Himachal Pradesh, is a stunning must-visit. Perched on the banks of river Bhaga, Jispa lies 2 hours from Baralacha-la and provides the most stunning views of surrounding mountains!

While it is often regarded as a pit stop en route Leh on the Manali-Leh Highway, I beg to differ. This place is truly worthy of its own individually planned visit! Situated at a stunning height of 10,500 ft., this little village, home to about 78 households, serves as a halt for travelers on the long road trip to Leh-Ladakh

The calm, quiet and tranquil village with a very small population, offers the most beautiful Zen-like trip you will not soon forget.

About Jispa Village

Jispa is widely known as a pit stop for your onwards journey to Leh. Often regarded as a great first night stop on the journey, you can actually fully experience Jispa if you spend longer here! Given a leisurely schedule towards your much awaited destination – trust me, the journey is worth every additional second. But, if you’re pressed for time – try squeezing in an extra day for this hamlet.

You will be surrounded by picturesque views of the mist-covered mountains and clouds, both of which make the village look like a brilliantly painted portrait. Take in the leisurely pace of the Himalayan nature and enjoy a stroll by the river or even a picnic near the many many scenic spots near the village.

While there are some homestays available here – I am certain that camping out will make for the most exquisite experience. The campsites are stunningly comfortable and provide basic services such as waterproof tents as well as electricity (though restricted to certain times)!

Jispa is located 20 km north of Keylong and 7 km south of Darcha and is situated on the Manali-Leh Highway on the Bhaga river. There are approximately 20 villages between Jispa and Keylong.

The village has a helipad, a post office, and a monastery. Travelers often stop for the night here; the village has a hotel, a mountaineers’ hut, and a campground. Jispa also has a small folk museum

Best time to visit Jispa Village

Jispa village barely experiences hot summertime and the mercury level never rises above 15 degrees during the entire season. When the winter season dawns, the temperatures begin to drop drastically, and being in the zero to the sub-zero region is a common era!

Jispa is simply adorned by the rugged mountains in the background and the village seems very small when you see it from a distance. Enjoy the hospitality of the local people as they are very friendly. Take a sip of Himalayan tea with snacks and experience Buddhist culture in this small village of India.

In my opinion, the best time to visit the region is synonymous with what the region experience – i.e. pre-monsoon period after the opening of passes – April – June End as well as before the onset of the winter months, i.e. August end- October beginning. This will allow you a lot of comforts and the pleasure of truly experiencing the outdoors and exploring the region.

How to Reach Jispa

In order to reach the beautiful village of Jispa, you’ll need to take the scenic route of the road. While there are certain comforts and pit stops that can be covered by other forms, as detailed below – it is highly advisable to do the road route!

Nearest Airport to Jispa is the Kullu Airport, situated around 180 KMs from Jispa. From here, cabs and buses are easily available towards Keylong and further connectivity. Leh is situated on the other end of the journey at 335 Kms.

Chandigarh Railway Station is probably the most convenient railhead for Jispa. From here, you can hire private cabs and even get a public transport bus for Manali. From there, you can have decent connectivity by road.

Honestly, this is the only real way to travel to Jispa. While there are ways where you can cover part of your journey through other forms – it is essentially completed by road.

Buses run by HRTC (Himachal Road Transport Corporation) are available from Manali bus stand. You could also travel by shared taxis. In case of both of these ways of travelling, you will be halting at Keylong from where you’ll have choices to reach Jispa.

Local Commute

The village is best experienced on foot, following the many trails and communicating with the local folks.

Attractions in Jispa

The village of Jispa propositions many exploration opportunities for travelers. Whether it is in a lodge or a tented camp, it doesn’t matter. You are surrounded by picturesque views of the mist-covered mountains and clouds, both of which make the village look like a brilliantly painted portrait. What better thing to do here than soak in the dreamy scenery encompassing you?

One of the things you must do is pay a visit to the Jispa Rural Housing Museum. As an outsider wanting to learn the ways of the place, the museum will give you a glimpse of the way of life of the residents of Tod Valley of Lahaul district.

You can even purchase some lovely handicrafts made by local women. Also, the village also houses several Buddhist chortens or stupas which you should visit during your time there.

Things to Do near Jispa Village

Visit Suraj Tal – Suraj Tal (or lake) is a sacred water body literally meaning the Lake of the Sun God and is the third-highest lake in India. Situated about 40 Kms from Jispa, the road skirts around the Suraj Tal and is absolutely stunning with its clear blue water.

Stay in the monastery and meditate, interact with the monks. Learn the way of life where peace is how you lead and your heart helps keep and preserve happy vibes all around. Come out rejuvenated and with a refreshed love for all things nature!

Where to Stay

Jispa is a quaint little town perched atop beautiful Himalayan hills, makes it difficult to find standard hotel accommodation. Even though Jispa lacks in options, you will be more than comfortable in the lap of nature. You may choose to stay in a lodge or set-up a camp. Overall, one may describe the accommodations here as decent and comfortable for any traveler.

What to Eat

Mostly basic food will be available to you here. You will likely be eating at your campsite/homestay and the food, though basic, tastes great in the hills! The entire positive vibes in the Himalayas and the fact that you have a true feeling of earning your supper will take you through a food journey of its own. If you’re lucky, the locals will happily make some local delicacies for your eating pleasure.

Is there an ATM in Jispa Village? The nearest ATM is in the Keylong town which is almost 23km away.

Can I find a petrol pump in Jispa Village? The nearest petrol pump is at Tandi, which lies at a distance of almost 32km from the village. It would be better to carry extra fuel just in case.

Jispa is a beautiful hamlet that MUST be enjoyed. Jispa perfectly summarizes you of an era gone-by and the history and way of life of the residents of the Tod Valley.

Sissu - Jispa Valley: The dreamy getaways near Manali for your next bucket list

Month of Visit: May, 2022

Sissu is a small town situated in the Lahaul valley of Himachal Pradesh and on the banks of Chandra river (40 km from Manali). It is great place to go in summers if you want to enjoy nature, scenic view of snow covered mountains and pleasant weather. If you are in Manali then you can definitely visit this place as it will not take more than 1 day to explore here.

From Sissu you can go to Jispa Valley (53 km). Jispa is a village in Lahaul on the banks of river Bhaga offering you with mesmerizing view of the surrounding mountains and the valley. It is a preferred pitstop for Travelers going to Leh from Manali. This peaceful village offers views which you will never forget.

On the way from Sissu to Jispa you can also visit Keylong which is an administrative centre of the Lahaul and Spiti district.

Jispa may not be as popular as other cities in India, but don’t let that fool you. Jispa is a smaller but beautiful upcoming tourist destination that is worth a visit. You will be surprised by some of the unique things to do and places you can explore at this hidden destination.

You might wish to revisit it someday again, to take a break and relax at Jispa.

Jispa is a small town located in Himachal Pradesh, and is often marked as an essential halt on a Leh-Manali trip. As a part of the adventure itineraries travelers follow on their Ladakh tours , they will choose to halt in Jispa, a mesmerizing village 20 km north of Keylong and 7 km south of Darcha along the most explored Leh-Manali Highway and on the banks of Bhaga River. At a height of 3200 meters, Jipsa is located and it is the major village in Lahaul district.

In the backdrop, the lofty Himalayan Mountains create alluring images. There are 78 households in the village and the population is calculated as 332 including 235 males and 97 females. Travelers take a stopover here to stay one night during their travel to Leh from Manali. There are camping grounds and many other stay options. The village is occupied with a helipad, post office and a monastery.

The small houses shimmering in the multiple colors of nature would leave everyone stunned. Jispa is simply adorned by the rugged mountain terrains in the background and the village seems so small when you see it from a distance as the towering Himalayas play the dominant role.

How To Reach

Best way to reach Jispa is to take a road trip here via Leh-Manali highway. One can take a local HRTC bus to reach a nearby village Keylong and from there you can take a local or private taxi to reach Jispa.

Or you can hire a taxi from Manali and reach Jispa directly via Leh-Manali highway, which has two different routes, one is through Rohtang Pass, and other is through Atal tunnel. It takes more time from Rohtang pass to reach Jisap compared to Atal tunnel, so plan your trip accordingly.

There is no airport or railway station in Jispa, thus you can reach the nearby locations and take a taxi or bus to reach Jispa.

Nearest railway station to Jispa is Chandigarh Railway Station, and nearest airport to reach Jispa is Kullu Airport.

If you are considering riding on your own to Jispa via Rohtang then get a Rohtang pass in advance for a smooth commute.

Not just Jispa but the best time to visit any place depends on what kind of a trip were you looking forward to. Jispa is probably the most beautiful and easily accessible town of Lahaul Valley. It presents a different color each season. When to visit will depend on what color do you seek. It is the months of June, early July, and September that is considered to be the best time to visit Jispa. But will it suit you as well? Read on to find out.

About Jispa

Jispa is a small village located in the Lahaul district of Himachal Pradesh. It is at a distance of 23 kilometers from Keylong and 93 kilometers from Manali. The high altitude pass of Baralacha La is about 52 kilometers ahead of the village.

Located on the banks of the Bhaga River, Jispa offers some of the best views you can get in Lahaul Valley and on Manali Leh highway . It is really just a quiet little village consisting of a handful of houses, a school, a helipad, a post office, and a monastery. There is also a hotel here and a couple of small guest houses and campsites. But when it comes to natural beauty, the place is really a giant in every way.

Until a while ago, Lahaul valley was accessible by road only between May and October. For the rest of the time, Rohtang Pass used to remain snowed out and the only way to get to Lahaul Valley was by a Helicopter service. But the much anticipated Rohtang Tunnel was recently declared open. It greatly reduced the distance as well as the travel time between Manali and Jispa. Now you no longer have to cross Rohtang to reach Jispa and can access the valley for all 12 months.

Best time to Visit Jispa

The best time to visit Jispa is between the months of April to June and September. The weather at this time is very pleasant and will suit the majority of the tourists. If you want to see snowfall and planning a winter trip, January to March will be your best bet. If you do not want to travel via Rohtang Tunnel and would rather drive over the pass, you should plan a trip towards late May, June, and early July.

The months of July and August are considered to be a bad time because of the monsoon season. Manali, Rohtang, and Lahaul Valley receive a heavy amount of rain each year, enough to cause landslides. Even if things did not get that extreme, it may still rain non-stop and shut you indoors for the entire duration of your trip.

With that being said, it is also the time when the views and the landscape are at its best. Monsoon really brings the entire valley to life. Mountains will seem as if they have just been washed clean and covered with a carpet of green. If it was photography on your mind, July, August, and September will be a great time.

November is generally considered a bad time to go because the views at this time are very dull. If you were traveling with your family, you should really plan between April and June. If you were thinking of a bike ride, you must avoid the monsoon months. For a budget trip, July, August, October, November, and early December can be a good time to visit Jispa.

If you were thinking of visiting here for your honeymoon, you should plan between January and March. For including Jispa with Spiti Circuit, you will have to plan between June and September.

Weather of Jispa

Jispa is located at an elevation of 3,200 meters (10,500 ft). It means that the weather here remains cold for all 12 months. It is only a matter of whether it was ‘pleasantly cold’ or ‘freezing cold’. Even in the months of May and June, you will need light woolens for a visit to Jispa and will be sleeping under a heavy blanket for the night.

Below is a month by month breakdown of how the weather and the temperature in Jispa trends. Please note that the temperature I am mentioning below is the historical average. It is subject to change depending on the time of the day and weather conditions.

Jispa in January

Jispa remains buried under snow in January. It snows for most of the month and the temperature will range between 0°C maximum and -5°C minimum.

Jispa in February

It will continue to snow in February as well. The temperature will range between 2°C maximum and -5°C minimum. You will surely need to bring Heavy woolens, a windproof jacket, thermals, caps, gloves, muffler, insulated shoes, and woolens socks for a trip at this time.

Jispa in March

The weather will start to get slightly warmer. The intensity and frequency of the snowfall will also reduce. By end of March, the spring season arrives and things get a little pleasant. The temperature will remain between 5°C maximum and -3° minimum.

Jispa in April

Spring is the best season to visit Jispa which makes April a great time to be here. The weather will start turning warmer but there will still be plenty of snow around for you to see. You can take a drive towards Baralacha La and see frozen Deepak Taal and Suraj Tal lakes as well. The temperature will range between 8°maximum and 1°c minimum.

Jispa in May

If you want to include Rohtang on your trip, enjoy really good weather, and also see the famed snow walls at Rohtang, then May can be a good month for your trip. But this is also the time when it is most crowded in the region. You will find a lot of families visiting Manali and Lahaul Valley this month. The average temperature will be between 11°C maximum and 2°C minimum.

Jispa in June

This is the peak tourist season in Manali and Lahaul Valley and it will remain to be crowded. Passes for Rohtang will be hard to get and taxi charges will rocket sky high. The weather will get even warmer with temperature ranging between 17°C maximum and 7°C minimum. Rohtang will get declared open and can be included in the trip. You will also find a lot of people passing through Jispa on their way to Ladakh.

Jispa in July

July is the warmest month of the year with temperature fluctuating between 19°C maximum and 12°. But this is also when the monsoon arrives in the region and you should expect heavy rains throughout the month. Sometimes, even the road to Rohtang can get closed temporarily because of the incessant rains.

Jispa in August

Monsoon will continue to rule August as well. The temperature will increase but only just a degree or two. Landslides are really a common sight in August. Sometimes, the road to Manali as well can get affected and declared closed for safety reasons. For a trip in July and August, it would be wise to call ahead and inquire about the weather and road conditions.

Jispa in September

September is really my favorite month to visit the hills. Monsoon will be long gone but would have left plenty of greenery behind. This is when the landscape and the views will be at their best. The temperature will drop down to 15°C maximum and 10°C minimum.

Jispa in October

Autumn arrives in October. All that was green in September will now turn Orange. The passes of Rohtang and Baralacha La will start receiving snow this month. Weather will start getting colder with the temperature dropping down to 12°C maximum and 4°C minimum.

Jispa in November

November is my least favorite month to be in the hills. The landscape at this time is very featureless. It will all just be very dull and dry. The weather too will start getting colder with temperature ranging between 9°C maximum and -0°minimum.

Jispa in December

The first half of the month will pretty much be the same as November but even colder. The average temperature in December will be at a maximum of 6°C and a minimum of -2°C. It would already be snowing heavily at Rohtang and Baralacha and can snow anytime in the month in Jispa town as well.

Best month to visit Jispa

Based on the information above, I believe it is safe to say that April, May, June, and September are the best months to visit Jispa.

Summer and post-monsoon is the best season to visit Jispa. The weather at this time will suit the majority of the tourists.

February will be a good time if you want to see snow and the frozen waterfall. Just hire a local cab in Manali and book hotels on your own. I do not have any contact numbers, sorry

Come back to the hotel, relax for a while.

In the Evening, you are free to explore some local part of Manali – Mall Road, Club House, Hadimba Devi Temple (At your own)

DAY 2: CHECK OUT FROM MANALI | JISPA Via ATAL TUNNEL & SISSU | OVERNIGHT STAY AT JISPA CAMPS

Wake up early morning, have breakfast and check out the hotel.

Later kick starts your day with the road trip to Jispa via Atal tunnel

We will head towards Baralacha La pass, it is one of the highest passes on the Manali Leh highway at an altitude of approx. 16090 feet.

Later we will head towards jispa.

Arrival at Jispa, Check in to the camps.

Dinner will be served and overnight stay in Jispa Camps

DAY 3: CHECK OUT FROM JISPA | DEPARTURE FROM MANALI TO DELHI

Wake up in the Campsite.

After Breakfast checkout the camps, then head towards Manali.

Reach Manali by afternoon and later you are free to explore the local market or the mall road for some last-minute shopping experience.

Then board your vehicle.

Later in the evening, we depart for Delhi with lots of everlasting memories together.

DAY 4: REACH BACK TO DELHI BY MORNING

Reach Delhi in the morning.

Accommodation for 1 night in a hotel at Manali and 1 night in Jispa Camps.

4 meals will be provided throughout the trip. 1 meal on Day 1 (Breakfast) + 2 meals on Day 2 (Breakfast + Dinner) + 1 meal on Day 3 (Breakfast).

Local and Sissu Sightseeing via Atal Tunnel.

Florida is boring?!

The Sunshine State is home to Disney World and Universal Studios and has hundreds of miles of beaches. We have the oldest city in the U.S. in our backyard and some of the richest people in the world .

To keep life interesting, we even have sharks and alligators .

Apparently, that's not enough.

According to a study by Solitaired , Florida is the fifth most boring state in the United States , based on an analysis of 66.7 million Google reviews of 3,290 popular tourist attractions around the world. The analysis was made to determine what locations were the least interesting.

"With its 104 boring attractions, Florida might seem like the boredom capital at first glance ," Solitaired said.

"Yet, it only ranks as the fifth most boring state because each attraction garners very few yawns from visitors. Despite many attractions being labeled boring by reviewers, this sentiment is such a minority that Florida only pans out as the fifth most boring state."

In March 2024, Solitaired "analyzed 66.7 million Google reviews of 3,290 popular tourist attractions worldwide , spanning 384 cities across 71 countries.

"We focused our analysis on keyword mentions indicative of a bored tourist. Those keywords were "boring," "bored," "bore," "boredom," "tiresome," "dull," "drab," "lackluster," "lifeless," "mediocre," and "tedious.

"We ranked the attractions by the frequency with which tourists mentioned boredom-related keywords, comparing the mentions to the total reviews for each spot."

Attractions with fewer than 2,000 total reviews were removed.

The Best Places for the Northern Lights

The northern lights, known as the aurora borealis, are a spectacular natural light show visible at certain times of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. They occur when electrically charged particles from the sun collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere, creating vibrant streaks of blue, green, pink and violet dancing across the night sky. 2024 and 2025 are an excellent time to catch the northern lights: Solar activity will be at a peak, making for a more impressive experience, if you're in the right place.

The best places to see the aurora borealis have little light pollution, clear skies and no precipitation. The lights are only visible at northern latitudes when it's dark outside, so the months from September to April are best for seeing the aurora. There's also a Southern Hemisphere counterpart, the aurora australis; there are fewer easy spots from which to view this phenomenon, but if you're lucky, it can be equally brilliant.

Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks is by far one of the best places in the world to view the northern lights, as it's located directly under the auroral oval. This ring-shaped zone sits around the Earth's geomagnetic North Pole and is generally associated with the most vibrant aurora sightings. Visitors can expect to see the lights on an average of four out of five clear nights during aurora season, which lasts from late August to late April.

You can book a northern lights tour to see the aurora from the springs and tubs at Chena Hot Springs Resort. This excursion includes round-trip transportation to the resort from town, a soak in the hot springs, a visit to the Fairbanks Aurora Ice Museum and an aurora viewing tour; dinner and drinks centered around Alaska produce are an option extra with hot drinks supplied.

There's more to Fairbanks than just the northern lights: If you visit in late summer, consider family-friendly activities like a ride on the Riverboat Discovery or gold panning. For a festive holiday experience in the winter, head around 15 miles out of Fairbanks to visit the Santa Claus House in the city of North Pole. Travelers can also see ice sculptures in February and March at the impressive World Ice Art Championships or take a dog-sledding or snowmobiling tour .

Tromsø, Norway

Located about 220 miles above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is one of several top spots to view the northern lights in Norway. At the darkest point of the aurora season – which runs from September to early April – the sun doesn't rise in this northern part of the country, although there is twilight during the day. With this level of darkness, there are more opportunities to see the aurora.

Tromsø itself is a small but lively city, so there's plenty to see and do when you're not looking up at the sky, including a visit to the beautiful Arctic Cathedral. In late January to early February, the city hosts the Northern Lights Festival, a 10-day music and performing arts event featuring a variety of musical genres.

Aurora chasers can view the lights on their own while in town, but to get a better view, it's recommended to head away from the city lights. Arctic Circle Tours is one company offering guided trips, with small groups for a more personal vibe. Alternatively, adventure-seekers can embark on an exhilarating husky trekking expedition in the Arctic wilderness.

Luosto and Rovaniemi (Lapland), Finland

Lapland is located within the Arctic Circle in the northernmost part of Finland. The northern lights are most visible here between the end of August and April – and approximately 200 times a year – so there are many opportunities for aurora spotting. Finnish Lapland is also known as home to the Sámi people (the only recognized Indigenous group in the European Union region), some 200,000 reindeer and Santa Claus – who can be visited in the town of Rovaniemi, the region's largest city and a great base for your aurora expedition.

Consider venturing roughly 70 miles north of Rovaniemi to the resort town of Luosto, set among the picturesque and hilly landscape of Pyhä-Luosto National Park. Here, you can also spend a magical evening outdoors under star-filled skies during a reindeer-drawn sleigh ride through the snow-covered forests. Orkney, Scotland

This group of captivating (and mostly uninhabited) islands, located about 10 miles off Scotland's remote northern coast, is one of the best places to see the northern nights in the U.K. Fall and winter are the best seasons to witness the aurora, also known in local Shetland dialect as the "Mirrie Dancers," with fall bringing the highest proportion of clear nights. A few places to see the spectacular light show include along the coast at Birsay or the Broch of Gurness, an archaeological ruin on a sweeping and dramatic coastline.

In addition to the aurora, Orkney is home to breathtaking coastal landscapes and more sheep than you can count (try some local lamb, if you can). Travelers can also visit the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with several monuments dating back 5,000 years.

Where to stay: During your visit, plan to stay in the historic town of Kirkwall, the capital of the Orkney Islands: The no-fuss Ayre Hotel offers harbor views, and past visitors compliment the hearty meals in the hotel restaurant. Spot the aurora close to town at Inganess Bay and Wideford Hill.

Yellowknife, Canada

Yellowknife, the capital of Canada 's Northwest Territories, dubs itself the "Aurora Capital of the World." Thanks to its position in the middle of the auroral oval, the city puts on one of the world's most awe-inspiring light shows. The period from mid-November to the beginning of April is the recommended time to spot the aurora, but it's also possible to see the aurora during more hospitable weather from late summer to early fall as the lights are visible up to 240 days a year.

Located on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, Yellowknife boasts winter sports such as ice fishing and cross-country skiing. If you visit in March, plan to attend the monthlong Snowkings' Winter Festival, which features events and activities like a snow-carving competition, a snow castle, live music and more.

For a unique experience, book a tour through Aurora Village to view the lights. The property will pick you up from your hotel and take you to its site, where you can stay warm in a tent while sipping hot beverages. The Aboriginal-owned Aurora Village also offers activities such as dog-sledding or snowshoeing excursions.

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

The optimal time for seeing the illuminated skies in the northern part of Sweden, known as Swedish Lapland, is between early September and late March. The small Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi sits around 125 miles above the Arctic Circle on the Torne River and is an ideal locale for aurora viewing. You'll fly to the nearby Kiruna Airport to get here. With the village's origins dating back to the 17th century, you can still find some of the original homesteads, including an old timber cottage. Today the village boasts 800 residents – and more than 1,000 dogs.

Where to stay: If you're up for a chilly overnight adventure, reserve accommodations at the world's first permanent ice hotel, the aptly named Icehotel 365. Each of its artist-designed suites is sculpted from ice with a unique theme and maintains temperatures around minus 5 degrees Celsius (about 23 degrees Fahrenheit). The rooms also feature beds with reindeer hides and thermal sleeping bags so you can bundle up during the night. While you're at the property, take advantage of the guided "Northern Lights Safari on Snowmobile" or embark on the "Moose Safari on Horseback" atop an Icelandic horse.

Reykjavik, Iceland

October through March is the best time to chase the aurora borealis in Iceland . There are numerous natural parks and attractions throughout the country where you can view the show during the long and dark winter, but the capital city of Reykjavik also offers many options for accommodations, restaurants, tours and other activities for your visit. For optimum aurora viewing in the city away from the light pollution, head to Öskjuhlið. This wooded and hilly area in Reykjavik sits at 200 feet above sea level and has walkways and paths where you can see the nighttime show.

Atop this hill sits Perlan, which houses the only planetarium in the country and a museum featuring exhibits about Iceland. Perlan is also home to the world's first indoor ice cave and glacier exploratorium. During your visit, don't miss the panoramic views of the city from the building's fourth-floor observation deck. From this vantage point, you'll be able to see the Snæfellsjökull glacier; Keilir, a volcanic mountain; and Esja, the mountain of Reykjavik.

Where to stay: While in Reykjavik, splurge on an overnight tour with Buubble Tours. One unique place to see them is the black sand beach at Reynisfjara (but watch out for the dangerous waves here). Alternatively, head to Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon and seal habitat, where the aurora's reflections in the icy water are truly beautiful.

There's no shortage of tours that will stop by these locations and more for possible aurora sightings. Consider a 10- or 13-day tour around the country with Fun Travel, or a four-day option from Arctic Adventures. If you want to do things at your own place, it's also possible to self-drive – just know that road conditions can be icy, particularly in the depths of winter (although Icelandic roads are generally well-maintained).

Where to stay: Hotel Rangá is a formidable option for aurora-spotting. It offers a variety of special amenities, such as aurora wake-up calls, a lookout deck and snowsuits to keep you warm if you're outside viewing the lights. Past visitors praise Rangá for being a comfortable yet luxurious place to relax, be it in the outdoor hot tubs or the cozy and sociable bar.

Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Greenland may not be the most accessible place to travel for viewing the northern lights, with limited flight options (mostly via Iceland), but those who make it here will be thrilled they did. The tundra of Kalaallit Nunaat – the Greenlandic name for the country – is one of the best places on the globe to see the aurora from September to early April.

For the more adventurous aurora seekers, head to the top of the Greenland Ice Cap for spectacular views of the lights. This impressive glacier covers 80% of the country and is accessible via the tiny town of Kangerlussuaq. Located on a fjord right along the Arctic Circle, the town, often described as a gateway to Greenland, was a former U.S. Air Force base and is now home to Greenland's main airport. The town is known for having clear skies on some 300 nights per year, so chances of a sighting are particularly good here.

Tour company Guide to Greenland offers various tours, from two-hour aurora-viewing trips to a tough but rewarding multi-night dog-sledding expedition across the ice. For a less strenuous experience, companies like Nordic Saga Tours offer cruises through the Arctic landscapes around Kangerlussuaq.

Embrace the winter and set sail for the Arctic Circle to experience the aurora in northern Norway. The 13-day "In Search of the Northern Lights" cruise itinerary with Viking departs from London for the North Sea with stops in ports of call that are top aurora-viewing locales, including Tromsø, Alta and Narvik, plus a stop in Amsterdam en route. The cruise ends in Bergen, Norway.

While on land, take in the natural beauty of the snow-blanketed landscapes and book bucket list excursions like a night spent in an igloo or a reindeer sledding adventure. You can also chase the lights into the wilderness by snowmobile, take a dog sled ride under the stars or view them from a Sámi tent atop the mountain Pæska in Alta. This Viking Ocean Cruises itinerary is offered with departure dates from mid-January to mid-March.

Headlands International Dark Sky Park, Michigan

Regarded as one of the top spots in the U.S. to see the aurora outside Alaska, Headlands International Dark Sky Park sits at the top of Michigan 's lower peninsula, less than 5 miles from Mackinaw City. While the northern lights are less common here due to the relatively southern location, the best time to catch a glimpse of this phenomenon is typically during the spring and fall – and appearances can usually be predicted a couple of days in advance. The park even maintains an online Clear Sky Chart so you can check the weather forecast before you go.

There are also other stargazing opportunities throughout the year at Headlands. During the summer months the Milky Way is visible across the sky, and late summer evenings entertain visitors with meteor showers.

Where to stay: If you're visiting between late April and the end of October, splurge on a stay at Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island, where the aurora should also be visible. Guests describe this iconic property situated along the shoreline of Lake Huron as positively charming, thanks to its historic nature and manicured grounds. The resort also offers a host of outdoor activities from bike rentals to swimming.

Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

Located on the international border between Minnesota and Ontario, Voyageurs National Park is an approximately 218,000-acre labyrinth of boreal forests, lakes and streams. Voyageurs is Minnesota's only national park; it's also unique in that the park's interior is accessible only by boat, unless you visit by snowmobile in winter. As a certified International Dark Sky Park , Voyageurs provides opportunities to view the Milky Way on clear evenings, especially in the summer. Year-round aurora viewing is also possible on evenings with clear dark skies, but chances are better during the winter, when it's dark for longer.

For a guided stargazing tour – including the Milky Way, the constellations and (if you're lucky) the northern lights – book with Voyageurs Outfitters. If you're on your own, park officials note that almost any campsite is a good spot for northern lights viewing and stargazing. You can also check out the boat launch areas around Ash River, Kabetogama Lake and the Rainy Lake Visitor Center for top-notch views.

Where to stay: Those who prefer to sleep in a warm, cozy bed instead of camping under the stars can make reservations at the Cantilever Distillery + Hotel, a boutique Trademark Collection by Wyndham property in the nearby town of Ranier, Minnesota. Visitors report that there's a lot to like here, from the industrial-chic rooms to friendly staff to top-notch cocktails in the active distillery on the premises.

Abisko National Park, Sweden

Given its Arctic location, Sweden is one of the prime spots for aurora viewing in the Northern Hemisphere, with Swedish Lapland at the top of the list. The fall and winter months (from September to March) offer the best opportunities to witness the spectacle, as there is more darkness than light during the days.

If you're up for the Arctic adventure, December is an ideal month to visit Abisko National Park, which some regard as one of the best places on Earth to see the lights dance across the sky. The park's mountainous terrain and clear dark skies offer dramatic front-row seats for viewing the northern lights. The Aurora Sky Station is one of the best vantage points to see the aurora in the park. Join one of the expert presentations to learn about the science behind this fascinating phenomenon.

If you'd prefer to chase the lights with a curated tour, professional photographers and aurora-chasing guides at Visit Abisko lead three- to four-hour tours throughout the fall and winter. If you can, try to join the tours in fall, as this time of year offers a unique opportunity to view the lights both in the sky and reflected in the lakes and rivers, which you won't see in the winter months.

Where to stay: For cozy Nordic vibes, stay at Abisko Mountain Lodge, which also offers activities like ice climbing and snowmobile tours in winter. Guests love the excellent restaurant here, which offers Swedish specialties ranging from salmon to moose.

Nellim, Finland

Located a stone's throw from the Russian border in Finnish Lapland, this remote Arctic destination is a top-rated locale to view the northern lights due to the lack of light pollution. You'll be seriously out of the way of any built-up areas, as there's not even a paved road into Nellim. The best time to visit is between December and early April. This village is a great place to hunker down in a lodge and relax while enjoying a slice of life in the Finnish wilderness.

Where to stay: The Nellim Wilderness Hotel offers a perfect base with year-round activities, including aurora-chasing tours by car, snowmobile or on snowshoes. You can even take a sleigh ride through the snow to a campsite on Lake Inari to spot the aurora in pristine nature.

Beyond standard rooms, the Wilderness Hotel also offers glass-roofed cabins, as well as classic log cabins and bubble-shaped accommodations for two where guests can watch the dancing lights through the glass roof above your warm, cozy bed. When you're not chasing the lights, enjoy other Arctic activities like a husky safari, ice fishing, snowmobiling or a day in the snow meeting the local reindeer.

Saariselkä and Kakslauttanen, Finland

These two towns are around 150 miles above the Arctic Circle, with a prime location under the auroral oval, allowing as many as 200 opportunities per year to see the northern lights (weather permitting, of course). This area in Finnish Lapland is known for its stunning scenery, Sámi culture, cross-country and downhill skiing, and Urho Kekkonen National Park – one of Finland's largest.

Ski enthusiasts can roll two trips into one by hitting the slopes by day in Saariselkä and aurora spotting by night at Finland's northernmost ski resort. March into early April is the best time to view the aurora, as the Finnish Meteorological Institute notes that the weather is usually clearer at this time of year. But it's possible to see the northern lights at any time during the season from late August to early or mid-April.

Where to stay: Seven miles south of Saariselkä sits the village of Kakslauttanen, where you can book two- or four-person Glass Igloos at the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort. The new Kelo-Glass Igloos, which sleep up to six, mix the comforts of a log chalet with the visibility of the glass roof; enjoy a private sauna, a fireplace and more. There's also an impressive selection of year-round tours and activities at this resort, including northern lights excursions on snowmobiles or by horse-drawn carriage.

Stewart Island, New Zealand

Although they may be isolated, some far-south destinations offer the chance to see the aurora australis – or southern lights. While you might be able to see them year-round in some locations (just as with the northern lights), certain months are better for aurora viewing in the Southern Hemisphere. Stewart Island is regarded as one of the top spots to see the brilliant display in New Zealand , with 85% of the island encompassed by Rakiura National Park, so there are few people and virtually no light pollution. New Zealand's winter months – June to August – are the best time to see the southern lights; spring and fall are also not bad times to spot them. The brighter summer months, between December and February, make it more difficult to spot the aurora, but there's still a chance you'll catch a glimpse between midnight and 4 a.m.

Tasmania sits approximately 150 miles south of mainland Australia. This mountainous island is one of relatively few places on the planet where it's theoretically possible to see the aurora 365 days a year due to its latitude, which allows for full darkness even on summer nights. The capital city of Hobart is the easiest point of entry: It's home to Tasmania's largest airport and serves as a convenient base. The city's burgeoning food and cultural scenes will also give you plenty to see and do.

From here you'll be able to reach several great viewing locations with unobstructed and open views of the sea along the southern and southeast coastlines, like Goat Bluff and Tinderbox Bay. When you're not staring at the night sky, splurge on a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter flight with Tasmanian Air Tours. Depending on your whims, your private pilot can whisk you away to soar over the sea cliffs; stop at a local winery to sample local vintages; or head south to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Port Arthur , Tasmania 's historic and most notorious prison.

If you're one of the lucky few people on the planet to travel to the southernmost continent on Earth, it may be pricey, but you'll have an adventure of a lifetime in Antarctica, especially if the aurora illuminates the sky. The southern lights are most visible in the winter months (between March and October), but due to weather conditions, only researchers brave the Antarctic winter – and they mostly stay indoors.

However, all hope is not lost if you seek to view the aurora australis in Antarctica. Late-season expedition cruises to this continent offered in March also bring the opportunity to view the southern lights and enjoy the end of Antarctica's fleeting summer. As the days shorten in length, you may encounter light snow across the extreme landscape and ice starting to form on the water's surface.

When it comes to wildlife viewing, humpback whale sightings are abundant, and you'll still see penguin colonies – including king and gentoo penguins. You can also keep your eyes peeled for elephant seals, leopard seals, wandering albatross and other species of birds. When night falls on clear evenings, look for the light show in the southern sky. Companies that offer March voyages include Swoop Antarctica, Atlas Ocean Voyages, Silversea Cruises , Aurora Expeditions and Hurtigruten Expeditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's no one location that's widely accepted as the best place to see the northern lights. However, the strongest light displays are within what's called the "auroral oval": a rough circle around the Earth's magnetic northern pole that tends to occur around 60 to 70 degrees of latitude. The oval's exact size expands and contracts (some more southerly destinations can fall under it when the aurora is particularly strong), but there are certain locations that generally fall within the oval most of the time.

These places include:

Central and northern Alaska
Large areas of Yukon, the Northwest Territories and northern Quebec in Canada
Southern Greenland
Far northern Norway, Sweden and Finland

Within these areas, it could be argued that Iceland is the best place to see the aurora as it experiences much milder temperatures than some other areas within the oval. But this is subjective, and some travelers may prefer a location like Yellowknife in Canada for a full-on, very cold Arctic experience.

The northern lights are only visible when it's dark out. Since many of the best places to see them are so far north that they experience near-constant daylight in the summer, you'll generally want to schedule a trip between late August and early April. However, within this time period, there's some debate about the best time to catch the lights. For example, the aurora tends to be more active around the September and March equinoxes due to stronger solar winds – but on the other hand, your chances of seeing them may be higher in the depths of winter, since there's longer nights and therefore a longer window in which they might appear.

In more southern locations like Minnesota, it may be possible to see the light show in the summer months, but it's still advisable to go at a time when the nights are longer. It can also be worth trying to schedule your northern lights trip when there's a new moon: While the aurora can shine through moonlight, it may be harder to see if there's a full moon.

Of course, cloudy weather can block the aurora even if you go at the right time of year. So, it may be wise to research the local weather patterns at your chosen destination to find out if there's a month where you can expect clearer skies. In many cases, though, there's a little luck involved.

These two countries can offer excellent views of the northern lights, since both are directly under the typical auroral oval. Yet there are some differences to be aware of.

In Norway, you'll need to head to the north of the country to catch the aurora: While they have been sighted in Oslo , the capital and largest city, it's too far south to be a reliable vantage point. Cities like Tromsø are popular spots, but direct flights there are only possible from some European cities, so North Americans will have to take connecting flights. On the other hand, Iceland is generally easier to reach, with direct flights to its capital, Reykjavik, from a large number of U.S. destinations (particularly from the East Coast) with no further connection required.

Since clear skies are key for seeing the northern lights, weather is another factor to consider. In November, December and March, Reykjavik has statistically slightly more frequent clear skies, while in January and February, Tromsø is a little better, but the difference isn't big: Both places have clear skies only around 25 to 30% of the time in these months. Reykjavik has slightly warmer weather, though, so between that and the ease of access, it has a slight edge over Norway for seeing the northern lights.

Alaska and Iceland are known for stellar aurora light shows, so deciding between them may depend on which destination you find more convenient and more to your tastes. In Alaska , the city of Fairbanks is considered a great spot to catch the northern lights. (They can still be seen elsewhere in the state – for example, in Anchorage, although they're not so common in more southern locations like Juneau). The advantage of Fairbanks is that you won't need a passport , yet there aren't many direct flights from the lower 48 states. Despite being an international destination, Iceland may be more accessible (particularly from the eastern U.S.), thanks to fairly regular flights to Reykjavik from numerous American cities.

Fairbanks does offer statistically better weather for aurora viewing: It has clear skies more often than Reykjavik, particularly in March when the Alaska city experiences them around 45% of the time (compared to about 25% for Reykjavik). But you'll have to be able to tolerate the cold. While temperatures in Reykjavik hover around freezing in midwinter, Fairbanks is a veritable deep freeze, with average highs around 5 degrees Fahrenheit down to lows colder than minus 5 in December.

This Quaint Town in Portugal Was Just Named the Best Place to Invest in Europe — and It Has Stunning Beaches

Lush pine forests, cobblestone streets, endless ocean views, and low real estate prices await in this quaint community in northern Portugal.

Portugal is on everyone's mind these days. The country's sunny weather , many beaches , and affordable cost of living have made it a popular choice for retirees and digital nomads. However, as is often the case, real estate prices in some of its most sought-after regions, like the capital, Lisbon and Algarve , have soared. But that doesn't mean you should give up on your dream of owning property in Portugal.

A new report by International Living ranked the small, under-the-radar- town of Caminha the best place to invest in real estate in Europe for its value and growth potential.

The community is located in the northwest along the mouth of the Minho River, which separates Portugal from Spain, and is home to about 16,000 residents. International Living gave Caminha a perfect score of 10 in the relative value category and nine for quality of life and stability.

"Caminha, which is only separated from Spain by a river, completely charmed me," Ronan McMahon, founder of Real Estate Trend Alert and author of International Living's Global Real Estate Index, told Travel + Leisure . "It has a beautiful Old Town surrounded by a verdant and bucolic countryside, with mountains, rivers, forests, and fields overflowing with brightly colored flowers and fruit trees heavy with their bounty. And then there are the stunning Atlantic beaches."

The ancient town has plenty of character, with fountains, churches, and other buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. And it's easily accessible from Porto, which is just an hour and 15 minutes south, providing access to an international airport.

Jeff Opdyke, International Living's personal finance editor, called Caminha a "holdover of Portugal before tourism and modernity swept over Lisbon, the Algarve, and Porto," where affordable real estate is still the norm.

Potential buyers can find apartments downtown for as low as $150,000 and stand-alone houses for $280,000 .

And while Caminha is the best place to invest in Europe, another destination took the top prize for global real estate value: Mexico's Los Cabos. International Living ranked first with almost perfect scores in categories such as income potential, climate, and international appeal. Riviera Maya and Estepona in Spain, a town in the country's famous Costa del Sol region, are tied for the third place.
