Whiskey sailing tour in Scotland

What comes to mind when you hear the word «exotic»? Jungles, palm trees, safari? What about a whiskey tour in Scotland on a sailing yacht — what could be more exotic?

The route: Inverness — Lossiemouth — Wick — Thurso — Scapa — Inverness, 250nm, Elan 434, June 2019. Flight to Inverness.

scotland whiskey boat tour

Can you imagine Scotland without the «water of life»? We had a WHISKEY TOUR in northern Scotland (Speyside, Highland, and the Orkney Islands), visited 14 distilleries with excursions and tastings, and one of the few coopers in Scotland (barrel manufacturing and repair plant). And we did it all on a yacht!

About whiskey, which I really love, you can read a lot at our whiskey specialists, which we had in our team. But I will talk about yachting. The idea to go to the very north of Scotland came, of course, along with whiskey. We wanted to visit the distilleries of the northern region, which are not as accessible as others. And not to change hotels every day, we decided to live on a yacht. The first request for a boat charter was 1.5 years before the trip. Then they canceled the reservation (it turned out that you can rent a yacht only for sailing in the Caledonian Canal, and they did not go to sea). And there was another long search after that. There are no charter companies at all. By chance, I found a yachtsman who rents out his Elan 434, called Single Malt.

At first, we were refused to rent a boat without a skipper, because we didn't have a needed qualification. Then, there was long correspondence about the route and our sailing experience, and after six months (10 months before the start of the trip), the owner agreed to rent his yacht at my full responsibility. By the beginning of the journey, however, I already had the required YachtMaster Offshore license. There were months of preparation: planning the route, exploring the depths and available marinas. I was busy with the route and the boat, and my friend, a whiskey expert, made arrangements with distilleries. We corrected dates and times of the visits, which entailed corrections of the route, and, consequently, changes in the entire reservation of marinas.

In the end, the route was ready, a team of whiskey fans gathered, visas obtained, and off we went! The team members were experts exclusively in whiskey, and no one had experience in sailing.

Even though it was a whiskey tour, at sea, there was a strict dry law. Alcohol was allowed only after mooring.

The expedition received the name «Double Single Malt.» Like any private boat, Single Malt had its peculiarities, namely: a lot of tools and accessories, well-functioning and reliable mechanisms, excellent sails, a lot of cooking dishes, and more. But along with this, there were drawbacks — «something does not work / there are some bugs, but it is uncritical.» The main disadvantage of the boat was that there was no battery charge from the shore (something was wrong with the charging unit). From an external network, it was possible to power only sockets on board. Winches and stoppers, of course, were not suitable for regattas, but cruising with them was ok. Webasto heater for Scotland is standard, so it was comfortable to sleep even on cold northern nights.

Sailing in Scotland deserves to be told about. According to local rules, life jackets and insurance are required. Constant ebbs and flows, tidal currents, harsh and often changing weather — this is not a complete list of what you should take into account. I planned every crossing with an accuracy of 15 minutes. I always used the almanac of tides and tidal currents, and Navionics app and weather forecast from at least two sources. Routing was done manually for the entire crossing with the recording of control points and dangers. High water and tidal currents were taken into account at each section of the crossing. As a rule, we left marinas around 3:30 in the morning on high water. Otherwise, you just couldn't get out of the marina.

The undoubted advantage of sailing in Scotland is nature. Bright and vibrant colors accompany you all the way. The weather is always changeable; the sun contrasts the greenery and rocks against the backdrop of a harsh sky.

scotland whiskey boat tour

Here we rented a boat: a lovely and lively city, lots of bars. You can stroll around the castle, see the views, and walk along the pedestrian tourist street.

We visited three distilleries on the border of the Highland and Speyside regions: Balblair, Dalmore, Glenmorangie.

The distance from the marina — 34 miles, 50 minutes by car.

scotland whiskey boat tour

INVERNESS — LOSSIEMOUTH, 40nm

Exit from Inverness marina to the sea: you can only go out in high water and calculate the time to start moving along the fairway to the sea with the beginning of low tide. Then the flow will significantly add speed. Once you pass the narrow places, you can raise the sails.

We arrived at the Lossiemouth marina before the schedule, but we couldn't enter it right away. By radio, we requested permission to enter. The answer was the following: «Now it's still low tide, you can stay on a keel. Anchor for an hour and a half, drink some tea, and then come in at high tide.»

scotland whiskey boat tour

LOSSIEMOUTH

This is a small town, but it is the closest marine location to the whiskey's production in the Speyside region. For two days, we visited Speyside Cooperage Cooper and five distilleries: Glen Moray, Macallan, Glenfarclas, Glendronach, Benromach.

The farthest distillery from the marina is 40 miles away — about an hour by car.

scotland whiskey boat tour

LOSSIEMOUTH — WICK, 50nm

The calmest and the most comfortable crossing. Calm sea, badewind, and sun. How to leave the Lossiemouth marina: you need to go out in high water and take into account the estimated time of arrival in Wick also in high water.

In Wick, we visited the shortest street in the world, listed in the Guinness Book of Records, Ebenezer Place — 2.06 meters.

And again, there were delicious fish restaurants. We were only upset by the desire of the waiters to add unnecessary items to the bill.

We visited two distilleries: Clynelish (30 minutes by car), Old Pulteney (15 minutes on foot).

scotland whiskey boat tour

WICK — THURSO, 35nm

23-25 knots in the face + headwind. This was a difficult crossing and complicated strait near Duncansby Head. But we had to go because the schedule of visits to the distilleries was tight. But it's good that it was only halfway. After turning west beyond the Duncansby Head, a nice gulfwind and a fair current accompanied us.

In June, the air temperature at sea was about 15 degrees. The bonus of this crossing was that we met a seal in the marina.

We visited the Wolfburn distillery, 30 minutes on foot along the picturesque village roads.

scotland whiskey boat tour

THURSO — SCAPA, 30nm

Fairly calm crossing. We left early in the morning on high water; dolphins welcomed the setting of sails.

In Scapa, there was a free guest buoy opposite the distillery. On a buoy, we spent two beautiful nights. The buoy was about a meter in diameter, and we were confident in it with a wind of 18 knots. We went on foot to the whiskey treasures of Scapa and Highland Park.

In all other places, we stayed in pre-booked marinas. The marinas are very narrow compared to the Mediterranean. Mooring in all marinas was to floating pontoons. With a difference of high and low water of more than 2 meters, it is impossible to do it another way.

The marinas have a toilet and shower. A shower is sometimes paid. But Wi-Fi is bad everywhere and, if there is some, then it is unstable. It is better to stock up on local SIM-cards. The owners of the marinas, like all the Scots we meet, are simple and open people, and always ready to help.

scotland whiskey boat tour

SCAPA — INVERNESS, 100nm

After Scapa, there was the longest crossing. The boat owner arrived, and together with him, we took the boat back to Inverness. The day before, we planned the route. We did it independently of each other, but the routes and the start time coincided. Again, the most challenging place was the Duncansby Head. However, as the owner of the boat confirmed, this place is always tricky. Then there was the sun, dolphins and ... And somehow everything was over, and we had to turn in the boat and say goodbye...

But Scotland and the love of yachts and whiskey are calling us on a new journey, which will take place in the summer of 2021.

Some tips on sailing in Scotland:

  • If you like whiskey and / or nature, you will never regret sailing in Scotland.
  • You must strictly adhere to security measures: the North Sea is much more severe than the Mediterranean.
  • Detailed crossing planning is required.
  • Good marine practice multiplied by two is always your best partner.
  • Life vests and insurance are a must.
  • Always be fastened when at the helm during crossings.

Touring Scotland's Western Isles by Boat

Touring Scotland's Western Isles by Boat

January 30, 2023 –––––– Jonny McCormick , , , ,

Sailing is an oft-overlooked way to explore the coastline of Scotland’s Western Isles. This 130-mile-long archipelago, known as the Outer Hebrides, forms the extreme western edge of Scotland and is the perfect destination for those seeking freedom, solitude, and epic adventure. It’s an island hopper’s paradise with thousands of miles of coastline to explore— the land of Compton Mackenzie’s “Whisky Galore!,” the origin of Harris Tweed, and a wildlife haven of eagles and whales. There are golden sandy beaches lapped by turquoise seas, a moonscape of boulders across Harris, peat stacks drying on the bogs of Lewis, and the summer blooms of the machair, Uist’s fertile grasslands. The Calanais Standing Stones, Dun Carloway Broch, and the peat smoke-filled dwellings known as blackhouses provide an evocative insight into the old ways of the islanders, bringing to life a place rich with the history and culture of early civilizations. And there are whisky attractions to explore.

Whisky Destinations

Tour Isle of Harris Distillery, which opened its doors in 2015 and produces Hearach single malt, which is maturing but has yet to be released. Until then, try their sublime Isle of Harris gin, infused with hand-harvested sugar kelp. This gin is the only Western Isles spirit currently sold in the U.S. In 2008, Abhainn Dearg Distillery (pronounced Aveen Jarrick) on the Isle of Lewis was the first legal distillery to open in the Outer Hebrides since 1829, and it now bottles a 10 year old single malt. The North Uist Distillery Co. on Benbecula is planning to make Nunton whisky from bere barley, the heritage six-row strain that grows well here. Owners Kate MacDonald and Jonny Ingledew are currently distilling their Downpour gin at a temporary location, while the distillery is being built on Benbecula inside the 18th-century Nunton Steadings. Michael and Katie Morrison opened Isle of Barra Distillers Co. in 2017, the most westerly distillery in Scotland. In a small copper pot still, the husband and wife team produces Island Dark rum and Barra Atlantic gin, infused with carrageenan seaweed and other botanicals, with ambitions to release Barra whisky in the future.

Northern Light Cruising

The Western Isles are also home to Am Politician pub on South Uist, which fans of “Whisky Galore!” must visit to admire the historic bottle of whisky salvaged from the wreck of the S.S. Politician. In 1941, the vessel sunk en route to Jamaica with a cargo of banknotes and over 250,000 bottles of scotch, many of which were rescued by the Eriskay islanders and hidden away. The fictionalized versions in Compton Mackenzie’s novel and two movies (one a more modern remake of the original) as “Whisky Galore!” has kept up the fascination with this story for more than 80 years: A bottle of whisky reclaimed from the wreck fetched $16,275 at Grand Whisky Auctions in 2021.

By Air and by Sea

Flying to the islands is easy from Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Inverness airports, with Loganair connections to Stornoway, Benbecula, and Barra. It’s a heart-pounding but exhilarating flight to Barra, where the little plane takes off and lands using the tidal beach as the runway. By sea, Calmac ferries serve the island routes, transporting passengers and vehicles from mainland ports in Mallaig, Ullapool, and Oban. If you’re visiting the Isle of Skye to see Talisker, Torabhaig, and nearby Isle of Raasay Distilleries, you can take a ferry to Harris or North Uist from Uig across The Minch, the strait that separates the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Once on dry land, the main road follows a spinal route from north to south, crossing the bridges and causeways connecting the islands.

Stornoway Seafari

There are plenty of sailing options, from day trips to multi-night cruises to private charters. Most routes run from April to early October, though be prepared to be flexible, as setting sail is reliant on weather conditions. The big draws are St Kilda, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located 41 miles west of Benbecula that was inhabited on and off for 4,000 years until 1936, and the Shiant Isles, a breeding ground for seabirds such as the Atlantic puffin. Take a Sea Harris charter to get to St Kilda quickly, with a 2.5-hour crossing from Leverburgh harbor. The volcanic island boasts the highest sea cliffs in the UK, spectacular seabird colonies, and the deserted houses of Village Bay. Beyond porpoises, seals, and dolphins, passengers may spot minke whales, basking sharks, orca, and the occasional humpback whale if you’re lucky. Hebridean Adventures runs the MV Monadhliath , a converted fishing boat with an observation deck for whale and wildlife cruises lasting up to six nights, with guests sleeping in bunk bed cabins below deck. Longer voyages of up to 10 nights are available from Northern Light Cruising Co. Ltd. aboard the Hjalmar Bjørge, taking in St Kilda and other abandoned isles including Taransay, the Monach Islands, Scarp, Pabbay, and Mingulay, enabling you to absorb the sense of history from their Iron Age and Viking settlements. For shorter trips, use Stornoway Seafari for day trips by fast rigid inflatable boat (RIB), or try Sea Trek Hebrides for two to three-hour wildlife-watching trips and fishing excursions for anglers looking to land haddock, cod, whiting, ling, and skate.

Venture Sail

Perhaps the most elegant way to sail around the Western Isles is by crewing a classic tall ship. Venture Sail runs 10-day voyages with excellent local cuisine under sail on the historic 100 year old Bessie Ellen, along with other cruises aboard a fleet of cutters, schooners, clippers, motor cruisers, and yachts. They welcome all, from novice sailors to experienced hands, and encourage travelers to get involved with operating the vessel. By the time you weigh anchor and watch the sunset over the water, you’ll certainly be in the mood for a fine whisky or two.

Customer testimonials.

Thank you McLean Scotland for creating and delivering the Tour of a Lifetime!!

I HIGHLY and STRONGLY recommend this company for your Scotch tour!!

This comment might seem strange, but to be honest, we didn’t really believe the quote we got for Liz and Paul. It was around 5-6k. We actually replied, 5k per person, right? We were surprised to find that was the total. The going rate for a week(ish) tour with big box (non-bespoke) companies in 2021 were 3-4k per person. If the price seems too low, it might raise red flags. It did with us, which is why we asked Liz and Paul to video chat to make sure it was real! I’m not suggesting that you jack up prices, but maybe address your pricing philosophy face up?

“We believe the wonders of Scotland should be experienced by all, which is why we carefully design tours to meet every budget. Please don’t compare us to the big tour companies. Hi Paul. Back in Sweden and delighted to find my wonderful lab still recognises me (as does my wife). I think we had a brilliant tour, in fact the best ever, and as always it's a pleasure being on the roads with you. Apart from being a great companion, you share so much about Scottish history and culture which you know I'm always keen to learn more about.

I liked in particular the scenery going from Ballachulish to Tyndrum in Glencoe – a road I'd never travelled before. The best views I've ever had in Scotland. I think we have a solid plan for next year so let´s keep in touch about that.

First time we used MCLEANSCOTLAND.  They were honest about what we would be able to see. It truly was a vacation of a lifetime. It was everything we dreamed about! And we saw as much of Scotland that we could possibly fit in 10 days. Forward five years – we decided to do a whisky tour with them.

They did all the driving, so many distilleries, so many laughs, drank so much whisky and had the time of our lives. Our whole trip was truly magical!  There are not enough stars to give them rating they deserve.

MCLEANSCOTLAND are an absolute joy to communicate with. Professional, knowledgeable, courteous, friendly, and awesome with communication. The way they communicate is vastly different from the other 7 companies that I contacted for the tour. The tour schedule was WOW!! So detailed, well planned, organised and thought out.

You guys truly listened and tried your hardest to schedule events tailored to our wants and it definitely showed! Once again, totally different from the 7 other companies I contacted. The price was great! You scheduled an incredible tour to the budget that I gave.

Your long experience was evident and we very much enjoyed stories about Scotland such as details about the clans and other information he provided along the way. One hotel you chose was fantastic for us. Quirky and fun, the host seemed very energetic. The dining room and bar were surprisingly busy for mid-week and the food was excellent. It was nice to take a bit of a rest in such a peaceful place and we stood in a field looking at stars for a good hour. Breakfast was excellent. We loved every bit of Islay.  Our walk on the beach was wonderful. We were happy to catch the standing stones on the mainland, definitely worth the stop at least for us. After switching drivers we were able to make a detour to the Glen Coe area and stopped at a pull-in to take some pictures...a highlight of the trip for us...it was quite impressive.  Overall, we had an absolutely incredible time and made a ton of new memories. I would write more about it how wonderful it was, but I have to be off to work now!!! Thanks again, and we really are excited about our next trip...which would have to include the Isle of Skye.

A globetrotting brand ambassador before that title had really been established, in the early years of the 20th century Dewar enlisted Thomas Edison to direct a film commercial for his White Label blend. It’s possibly why Dewar’s remains among the best-selling blends in the US. The remarkable story forms the heart of the interactive heritage museum at the visitor centre for Aberfeldy, the malt at the heart of Dewar’s blend. The distillery is on the banks of the Upper Tay, just outside Aberfeldy itself. Stay Brae House , doubles from £125 B&B Tours £10.50pp , Aberfeldy, dewars.com

Deanston, Perthshire

Deanston Mill now a distillery on the River Teith near Doune, Scotland.

A steady supply of water doesn’t automatically lead to whisky production. In Deanston, it once meant textile manufacturing. Which is why this distillery wouldn’t look out of place along the Rochdale canal. A Richard Arkwright-designed textile mill, Deanston was transformed into a distillery in 1966. Thanks to the River Teith, the distillery, as with the mill before it, generates its own power. Tour guides point out the ghostly remains of what was claimed to be the largest waterwheel in Europe – now replaced by turbines. Deanston is the location for film director Ken Loach’s affectionate whisky romp, The Angel’s Share. Stay Creity Hall , doubles from £90 B&B Tours from £9pp, near Doune, deanstonmalt.com

GlenDronach, Aberdeenshire

Glendronach Distillery, near Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

The stars and stripes flying high above the Aberdeenshire countryside is a clue that GlenDronach is now owned by the same American company behind Jack Daniel’s. With its row of workers’ houses and 250-year-old master distiller’s mansion, this is a thrilling distillery experience – more than 50 people lived and worked here in the early 19th century. In fertile farming country (the Valley of the Brambles responsible for its Gaelic name), you can pick a blackberries in the grounds for an appropriately sweet amuse-bouche before a tour of this Victorian whisky village and a tasting of its juicy, sherry-matured whisky in the darkly inviting tasting bar. Stay Netherdale House , doubles from £110 B&B Tours from £10pp, Forgue By Huntly , glendronachdistillery.com

Clynelish, Sutherland

Samples of Clynelish whiskey inside Brora Distillery, Scotland.

So discreet is its setting in farmland above the coast road, that many who pass en route to John o’Groats assume Clynelish is a hydro-electric plant. You can see their point. The 1960s-built distillery eschewed the traditional pagoda-style skyline of the malting roof (which is now mostly a distillery affectation anyhow, as barley is malted off site). However, the 200-year-old distillery buildings – home to the holy grail of lost malts: Brora – are being recommissioned by beverage multinational Diageo. The distillery has a dark past: it was built by one of the chief architects of the Highland clearances, the Duke of Sutherland. His hill-top statue looms over this coast, although slabs of its footing are regularly chipped away by those determined to see it tumble. Stay Clynelish Farm , doubles from £80 B&B (£70 a night for two or more nights) Tours from £12pp , Brora , malts.com

Strathisla, Moray

Strathisla distillery in Keith in the Moray District of Scotland.

Think you’ve got what it takes to be a master blender? The Chivas Blending Experience (£60) at Strathisla, the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Highlands, will put you to the test. Now owned by Pernod Ricard, whose portfolio includes Chivas Regal, the distillery’s cobbled courtyard leads to a mad professor-style blending lab, complete with bulbous burettes filled with fine malt whisky. Tours make it possible to mix (and keep) your own unique blend. The two-pagoda distillery is atmospheric, with many of its stones snatched from neighbouring 15th-century Milton Castle. Stay Isla Bank House , doubles from £130 B&B Tours from £15pp, Keith , maltwhiskydistilleries.com

Ardbeg, Argyll and Bute

Ardbeg Distillery on the coastline just east of the village of Port Ellen on the island of Islay, Scotland.

When burned as fuel to dry the malted barley, the seaweed and sea salt-infused peat of Islay produces the island’s signature whiskies. Ardbeg’s tours include a yomp over Islay’s peat-cloaked hills (perhaps by way of the eighth-century Kildalton Cross, one of the finest early Christian crosses in Scotland), with an outdoor tasting and a picnic lunch prepared by the team at the distillery’s restaurant. Round a visit off with a stay at Seaview Cottage, the former home to the distillery manager. Sipping an Ardbeg Supernova with a view of the Atlantic breakers outside your window, peat fire roaring in the stove – might that be the ultimate Islay whisky experience? Stay Seaview Cottage , sleeps six, from £200 a night (minimum two-night stay) Tours from £8pp, Ardbeg, Port Ellen , Islay, ardbeg.com

Oban, Argyll and Bute

The Ton room in Oban Distillery, Scotland.

Squeezed between the coast and the cliff that separates the harbour from the suburbs above, the Oban distillery is a tight huddle of grey granite buildings. When the distillery was built in the 1790s, Oban was little more than a scatter of herring storehouses, but since then the busy port has grown around it. This pocket-size distillery’s tours offer a rare chance to sample a west-coast style (somewhere between a sweet Speysider and the smokey islands). When the drizzle descends, the lively dramming bar is the place to settle in and see it out before catching a ferry to recently reopened Tobermory distillery on Mull. Stay Alltavona guesthouse, doubles from £115 B&B Tours from £12pp, Oban, malts.com

Springbank, Argyll and Bute

Springbank Distillery racked warehouse full of maturing whisky casks, Campbeltown, Argyll and Bute, Scotland, UK

In its prime, Campbeltown (a distinct whisky region in its own right at the end of the Kintyre peninsula) saw more than 30 distilleries pump their waste back into Campbeltown Loch, giving rise to the Andy Stewart eponymous song: “Campbeltown Loch/ I wish you were whisky”. Of the three remaining distilleries, Springbank is the oldest, producing its complex maritime dram on the same fortress-like site in the centre of town since 1828. As tours go, Springbank has more to see than most, as the entire production line takes place here, from the malting floor to the bottling plant. Stay Grammar Lodge , doubles from £90 B&B Tours from £10pp, Campbeltown, springbank.scot

Kingsbarns, Fife

A bottle of Kingsbarn whisky on display on top of bourbon barrels at the distillery and visitor centre in St Andrews, Scotland.

Easy-drinking Lowland whiskies can find it it hard to shout above the peaty monsters of Islay or the romance of the Highland drams, and a decade or so ago there were only a couple of distilleries clinging on. But a cluster of new Fife-based ventures point to a resurgence. Kingsbarns’ new visitor centre and restaurant sit within meticulously restored farmsteadings and a 200-year-old dovecot. It’s surrounded by golden fields of barley: the same stuff that you’ll see frothing away in the mash tun. Its first release, Dream to Dram, is a perfect distillation of Fife’s farming heritage, one that’s even managing to lure golfers away from St Andrews’ Old Course, just eight miles away. Stay The Old Station , doubles from £90 B&B Tours from £10pp, Kingsbarns, kingsbarnsdistillery.com

Along the way, you'll sample some of Scotland's finest single malts from distilleries in Islay, Jura, Arran and Campbeltown. A sailing trip just wouldn't feel right without some whisky, would it?

Our itinerary highlights exciting things to see and do along the west coast which will sometimes include slight detours from the most popular sailing routes. For more detailed route suggestions and practical information please visit the  Sail Scotland  website.

Continue onwards to Cairnbaan, where you'll find a peaceful night's slumber with several accommodation options. This passage can take a few hours in high season.

Day 2 Crinan & Isle of Jura

Cruise along the Crinan Canal and watch as vistas of the Inner Hebrides open up before you. Head towards Craighouse on the Isle of Jura. It's important to check the tides before you embark on this part of the journey, or you may end up struggling to make headway.

Once you arrive on Jura, it's whisky o'clock!

Jura Distillery Jura

Isle of Jura Distillery

We'd recommend a visit to the famous Jura Distillery. A chat with one of the distillery team is a great way to get an insight into island life. They are a friendly bunch who relish the opportunity to recount stories from the past - once, you've been, you'll want to become an honorary  Diurach . And the whisky is pretty wonderful stuff, too!

Paps of Jura Jura

The Paps of Jura

Add a challenge to your west coast adventure and climb the Paps of Jura, the distinctive island peaks which can be seen for miles. Scaling the paps will probably take most of the day, so you could find an alternative walk if you're keen to get a distillery visit in, or explore more of the island.

Day 3 Islay

From Jura to her sister island Islay, the whisky-tasting experience continues. Begin your escapades on Islay by getting to know Port Ellen, one of the isle's prettiest towns. Next, try peaty drams from three of the isle's eight working distilleries; Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig are handily located just a few miles away from the harbour.

You can rent a car from  Islay Car Hire  to visit the nearby distilleries, or to explore the whole island. You can choose to pick up the car at Port Ellen.

Grab a takeaway from the  SeaSalt Bistro  or sit down for a delicious dinner at the  Islay Hotel , which has a changing seasonal menu, often featuring freshly caught salmon, langoustines and oysters from local fishermen.

There are some lovely places to stay in Port Ellen too, with several cosy B&Bs, hotels and self-catering properties.

Day 4 Islay Distilleries

Of course, Islay is most famous for its peaty, smoky whiskies which are enjoyed all over the world. Whisky lovers and novices alike will be fascinated by the history of whisky-making on the island, so why not stop by a few distilleries and find your new favourite? These three distilleries are all within a few miles of Port Ellen.

Ardbeg Islay

Located on a deep bay sheltered by Davaar Island and the surrounding hills, Campbeltown was once 'the whisky capital of the world' and home to 30 distilleries. It now just has three -  Glen Scotia , Glen Gyle and  Springbank  - each still actively producing excellent whisky. Golfers also have plenty choice with Machrihanish, Machrihanish Dunes and Dunaverty courses nearby.

Day 6 Campbeltown to Lochranza

It might seem too soon to leave the beautifully peaceful Kintyre, but don't worry. The final leg of your sailing adventure includes a voyage to another magical island, Arran. Sail into  Lochranza  in the north edge of the island, where you'll be on the cusp of many exciting discoveries. In fact, there are so many possibilities that it is easy to spend a couple of days on the isle before sailing back to the mainland.

There is also the alternative option of sailing into  Lamlash  or  Brodick , depending on what you'd like to see and do on Arran.

Steeped in history, the castle was the ancient seat of the Dukes of Hamilton and houses a fabulous collection of artefacts, from silverware and paintings to even sporting trophies. Explore the garden to see the famous collection of rhododendrons or follow one of the woodland trails - you might even spot rare red squirrels.

Afterwards, set off along either the coastal road north or south to get a real feel for the island's geography. Let the kids blow off some steam at the Isle Be Wild adventure play area and for the adults, take it easy as you stroll through the formal gardens on the Silver Garden Trail.

An optional early morning hike to the top of Arthur’s Seat for sunrise is available for anyone interested. We’ll meet up in the lobby later to head out for sightseeing and an Instagram-worthy photo tour of Edinburgh.

Lunch is at your own expense but I can make several suggestions. The evening will be at your leisure.

Add on Excursion: Consider adding on an exceptional evening at The Scotch Whisky Experience. We’ll be heading over to the Scotch Whisky Experience for a whisky pairing dinner after taking their tour of how whisky is made. This will be a very fun night!

October 24, Thursday Day 4:

We’ll be heading out early for a full day on a private tour with Rabbie’s (my favorite tour company…ever).

From their website:

“You leave the cobbled streets of Edinburgh and travel past Linlithgow Palace and Stirling Castle.

This region is soaked in history, so sit back and relax as your driver-guide entertains you with the tales of Mary Queen of Scots, William Wallace, and Scottish folklore.

If you keep a lookout, you can catch a glimpse of the Kelpies. These 30-metre tall horse head sculptures need to be seen to be believed.

Your driver-guide takes you to their favourite stop within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park where you can grab coffee and enjoy the views.

After this stop, it’s time to get your camera ready. Because as you travel north into the Highlands, the landscapes suddenly become more provocative.

Shimmering lochs, rugged mountains, forest filled glens: it’s all so beautiful that it’s easy to forget these were once battlegrounds for fiercely territorial Highland clans.

You stop in Glencoe, one of the most famous natural landmarks in all of Scotland. This beautiful area boasts steep slopes and photogenic peaks. Your driver-guide may reveal to you the tragic tale that’s haunted this valley for over 300 years.

You then enter the glacial valley known as the Great Glen and pass under the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain.

After this visual feast of mighty inclines, you arrive in Fort Augustus on the banks of Loch Ness. At 23 miles long and over 700ft deep, Loch Ness is the largest loch by volume in Scotland.

You have around one hour and a half here. You can search for the infamous monster on a relaxing boat cruise,* wander around the shores of the loch at your own pace, and grab a bite to eat.

Meals will be at your own expense at various stops throughout the day.

October 25, Friday Day 5:

Another fabulous day out on a private tour with Rabbie’s…this time we will focus on Outlander filming locations. Rest assured though, if you aren’t an Outlander fan…you’re still going to LOVE this tour. I’ve never seen an episode of the show but I’ve been on this tour three times and its incredible!!

“You leave Edinburgh and begin following the trail of film locations featured in the Outlander TV Series. First, we travel to the place that needs no introduction: Midhope Castle, known as Jamie’s lovely home Lallybroch.

We then journey through the charming countryside to Blackness Castle. It’s an impressive fortress that’s known as the ‘ship that never sailed’ because it resembles a giant stone boat. You have time to walk along the ramparts and explore the fictional headquarters of Jack Randall.

The next stop is Linlithgow Palace, otherwise known as Wentworth Prison.

Unfortunately, the palace is undergoing some refurbishment and you can’t explore the interior. But you’re still able to admire the structure and enjoy the surrounding settings.

Heading north, we journey past Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument to Doune Castle, or as it’s called in Outlander, Castle Leoch. This formidable building represents home to Colum Mackenzie and his clan in the 18th-century episodes.

Travel back in time once more as your driver guide takes you to Culross. This virtually unchanged 16th-century village overlooks the sea and poses as the fictional town of Cranesmuir.

From there, we head back to Edinburgh, where we arrive in the late afternoon.”

Lunch will be at your own expense at various stops throughout the day.

After our day trip, we’ll go to the Old Chain Pier Restaurant for our Farewell Dinner, where we can exchange stories and pictures from our epic stay in Edinburgh! Dinner and a drink are included with my gratitude to you for letting me show you one of my favorite cities in the world.

October 26, Saturday Day 6:

This morning, we’ll be packing up and heading out of Edinburgh. We’ll be making our way to Waverley Station to start our journey north. We’ll then settle in on the train for a four hour long journey watching the gorgeous countryside go by as we head into the Highlands.

Upon arrival, we’ll drop our luggage off at the hotel and I’ll take you on a walking tour of Inverness before giving you the rest of the evening with plenty of recommendations for dinner and things to do.

October 27, Sunday Day 7:

Today, we’ll be going over the sea to Skye (sorry I couldn’t help myself with another epic tour with Rabbies.)

“After an early start, you leave the city and travel along the Great Glen Fault Line toward Loch Ness. You’ll continue through dramatic Highland scenery to the west coast and Eilean Donan Castle.

The moment you’ve been waiting for, because it’s over the sea and onto the Isle of Skye. You travel up the island’s east coast through the stunning Red Cuillin Mountains to Sligachan, where you stop for a photo of the clear mountain waters.

You’ll explore some of the most famous scenery of the island at the Trotternish

Peninsula. The Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock, and the Quiraing are all unforgettably beautiful.

You venture to Kyleakin for a chance to view the dramatic ruin of Castle Moil or the Skye Bridge and Eilean Ban. Traveling over the bridge, you journey back to Inverness. The route you take back is different from the morning, so you get even more opportunities to enjoy the Highland scenery.

This will be a long but PHENOMENAL day. Meals will be at your own expense at various stops throughout the day.

October 28, Monday Day 8:

Sadly, we will all go our separate ways today (unless you’re coming with me to Ireland ! ) but I can point you in the right direction if you’re going to the airport or back to the train station to go back to Edinburgh and beyond.

Slàinte Mhath (cheers) and safe travels as you head home! Until we meet again!
