Experiencing Europe on a Disney Cruise!

4/23/2021   |   Cruises

Every summer Disney Cruise Line sails one of its ships to Europe for one of the most special sets of itineraries available. Disney Cruise Line separates their European itineraries into Northern Europe and Mediterranean itineraries. My family was able to experience the unique 7-night repositioning cruise that connected these guest experiences. We started in Dover, England and ended in Barcelona, Spain and it was a vacation we will never forget and recommend to all interested in visiting Europe with their family.

Visiting Europe on a Disney cruise allows families to visit multiple countries and cultures in a short time while keeping a home base on the ship. The tours offered by Disney’s port adventures team allow for the interests of all ages with varying tour lengths to accommodate your needs.

On our particular cruise, we docked in Le Havre, France; Lisbon, Portugal; and Cadiz, Spain with 3 full days at sea. All of these countries were new to our family so we took advantage of the tours to see all we could while we were in port. Le Havre is located in northern France and about a 2 ½ to 3-hour drive from Paris. With a 16 hour stopover, there was plenty of time to take an adventure into Paris and see the main sights of the city. Lisbon’s city tour showed us how important the city and its inhabitants were to navigation of the oceans and the discovery of the new world. Cadiz’s town square, just steps from the dock, allowed us a walking tour of the city that dates from the time of the Phoenicians, about 1100 BC. Another amazing sight was seeing Africa as we sailed through the Strait of Gibraltar late one evening.

Families of all ages can be found on Disney’s European cruises. If you have young children, exposing them to historical locations, introducing them to new languages, and giving them a fun time each day is a great introduction to Europe. Tweens and teens will get excited when they recognize places and people that they’ve studied in school and then when they are back on the ship the excitement doesn’t stop when they meet up with new friends in Edge and Vibe.

What makes Disney’s cruises so special to experience Europe is the fun, family-friendly atmosphere. From the shows to the onboard events, the age-appropriate port adventures, and the characters that dress in the native clothing of the ports, you will find everyone young and old enjoying each day of the cruise from morning until night.

Everything You Need to Know About European Cruises With Disney

by Melissa Roden · February 20, 2019

Adventures by Disney

Whether you have visions of sunning yourself in the Mediterranean or exploring some of Europes most majestic capital cities, Disney has the perfect sailing for you! Guests love charting a course for an overseas adventure with Disney as it’s a familiar brand you know and love with impeccable customer service.  However, unlike more familiar sailings to the Bahamas or the Caribbean, finding a European option that suits your needs can be a bit daunting! That’s where we come in. To help you with your vacation abroad, here’s everything you need to know about European sailings with Walt Disney World.

European Disney Cruise

Disney Cruise Line Versus Adventures by Disney

There are two ways that you can take to the waterways on a European Adventure with Disney.  The first is by booking a Mediterranean, Norwegian, British Isles or Northern European sailing directly with Disney Cruise Line.  Currently, on offer are a range of sailings ranging from a 5-night Mediterranean sailing out of Barcelona to a majestic 11-nights exploring the Norwegian Fjords.

Adventures by Disney takes to Europes smaller waterways with sailings along some of the continent’s most picturesque waterways.  Disney’s touring company offers a series of 8-day River Cruises that take you along the Rhine, Rhone, Seine or Danube Rivers!  It is also possible to book Mediterranean sailings offered via Disney Cruise Line as a “touring package” with lots of extras thrown in if booked via Adventures By Disney (but we’ll talk more about that later.)

Now let’s take a look at current European sailings on offer with both Disney Cruise Line and Adventures by Disney:

  • Authentic Cultural Activities
  • Private Sightseeing
  • Sophisticated Experiences for All Ages

Booking a Disney Cruise Line Sailing with an Adventures by Disney Add-on.

Prefer sailing aboard the Disney Magic but want the perks of an all-inclusive sightseeing package? If you’ve got wiggle room in your budget, you may want to consider enhancing your Disney Cruise with the experience of touring with Adventures by Disney.   By booking your Disney cruises through Adventures by Disney you can take advantage of Adventure Guides who will organize guided experiences for you at every port and handle all of the travel details so that your visit is hassle free!  Prices for these sailings vary and you can find out more by visiting Adventures by Disney or by filling out our form below for your FREE, no-obligation quote with MickeyTravels.

Does Disney Offer Cruising Discounts?

Disney Cruise Line and Adventures by Disney vary from other cruise lines in that they rarely offer last-minute or seasonal discounts. Rather they operate under an early booking model.  This means that the further out you book the more affordable the rates.  As the sailings start to fill up, you will notice an increase in rates.  Unlike a trip to Walt Disney World where discounts can be applied to your package after you’ve booked, the rates you lock in with your cruise will stay at that rate.

5 ways Disney makes cruising Europe easy for families

Megan duBois

Many people know Disney Cruise Line for its family-friendly cruises from North American home ports to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mexico and Alaska. But did you know that every summer, one Disney cruise ship makes its way across the Atlantic Ocean for a season in the Mediterranean?

Previously, Disney Magic was the lucky ship to cruise among the charming European ports, but in 2023, Disney Dream sailed to the Mediterranean for the first time. The ship will continue to take families to bucket-list-worthy destinations around Europe, including Italy, France, Greece and Norway, next summer, too.

If you're thinking about taking a European cruise and wondering how to balance traveling with kids and venturing into historic cities, don't panic. Here are five ways Disney is making the Europe cruise experience as simple and smooth as possible for families of all types.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

Children can stay in the kids clubs while parents explore the ports

disney european cruise blog

Long port days can be hard for parents who want to see the historic sites in Rome, visit wineries in Tuscany or enjoy a guided hike in Norway but fear their kids will get bored quickly or are too young to participate in some activities.

One of the biggest perks for families cruising with Disney Cruise Line is that kids can stay in the dedicated kids clubs on board the cruise ship while parents explore the various ports of call on their own. Parents can drop junior cruisers off at the clubs before getting off the ship and know that their children are being cared for by the counselors their kids have already met.

Even better, playtime in Disney Dream's four youth activity spaces is included in the overall cost of the sailing. Disney's Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab are dedicated spaces for kids ages 3 to 12, where they can play games, do crafts or hang out with a good book while under the supervision of the counselors.

While you're out enjoying the port, you can also be assured that Disney is taking care of your children's rumbling tummies because the kids clubs provide meals inside the club during the day.

Older kids have their own shipboard spaces. Edge is Disney's tween club for those ages 11 to 14, where guided activities, like video game competitions and dance parties, take place daily. Edge is located inside the faux forward funnel on Disney Dream, so it feels exclusive.

Teens ages 14 to 17 can enjoy Vibe, where they'll learn how to make movies or watch them on the 103-inch TV. Disney Dream also has a private sundeck for teens, which is only accessible with a Vibe-coded room keycard. (Be sure to check in at Vibe on embarkation day to ensure your teen's room key will allow them into the deck area.) Both Edge and Vibe have a free come-and-go policy, so kids can enjoy the spaces as they want without parents having to check them in or out.

No matter which club your kids hang out in, they will have plenty of fun, and parents can rest assured that if anything happens, the counselors know what to do. They have access to every phone number for Disney-led port excursions, so if your child has an emergency and the ship can't reach you directly, Disney can call the tour operator.

If you are touring ports on your own, inform the counselors of your plans and give them your best contact information on embarkation day.

Disney Cruise Line offers both family-friendly and adults-only shore excursions

disney european cruise blog

Disney's shore excursions in Europe cater to all types of travelers and desired experiences with family-friendly and adults-only options.

Grown-ups who may be traveling without kids or have dropped their children off at the kids clubs can enjoy tours designated for cruisers ages 18 and older. The adults-only tours often move at a faster pace, so pack your walking shoes if you plan to do a heavy day of sightseeing, especially in cities like Rome or Athens.

Adults will find that excursions through Disney Cruise Line encompass a wide range of interests, from wine tastings and local food tours to venturing into historical sites. There are even some adventure sports like riding ATVs.

If traveling with young kids, book the tours labeled "for families" or "featuring exclusive youth activity" early since they fill up quickly.

Related: Shore excursions: What new cruisers need to know

Family tours are often less strenuous than the traditional or adults-only departures, allowing for little legs to keep up with the group. They feature longer breaks or time on your own, so kids can get a rest and perk up with a sweet treat, like gelato in Italy.

Tours labeled with the phrase " featuring exclusive youth activity " will include time for adults and kids to have separate activities. One of the options with this label is a tour of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, where kids learn how to make pizza at a local restaurant with the help of the Disney Cruise Line youth counselors while parents enjoy time on their own or on a guided tour. Everyone comes back together for lunch.

Booking shore excursions through Disney Cruise Line also guarantees that you won't be left behind in a foreign city if your tour runs late getting back to the ship.

Casual dining options are plentiful after long days of sightseeing

disney european cruise blog

After a long day sightseeing in port, the last thing your kids want to do is sit through a long dinner in one of Disney's three main dining rooms. This means finding dinner elsewhere on the ship, which is easy thanks to Disney's quick-service options on the pool decks.

Families can grab a quick bite from three "Cars"-themed service windows at Flo's Cafe every evening. The menus here are packed with kid-friendly favorites, such as chicken tenders, burgers, salads, wraps, pizza and more. Flo's also has sandwich specials that change daily, including tasty options like spicy fried chicken and pulled pork.

You can be in and out in 15 to 20 minutes and then have time to see the nighttime shows or get to bed early before another day of exploration in a new port.

Alternatively, families can order room service , which is included in the cost of your Disney Dream cruise. Room service can take a while to arrive if you, like hundreds of your shipmates, are ordering during peak dinner hours. However, the joy of eating dinner in your pajamas in a space where kids can squirm freely may be just what your family needs after a long day off the ship.

Related: 12 dining mistakes you must fix on your next cruise

Pro-tip: If you're a chicken wing connoisseur, Disney Cruise Line has some of the best wings at sea on its room service menu. They are crispy and juicy, served piping hot, and the buffalo sauce is spicy.

If your family wants to eat in the main dining room, and you're on the early seating rotation, Disney offers some leniency on longer port days when tours tend to return to the ship late. A ship officer or dining team member will often be out on the pier announcing that the main dining rooms are still seating guests until a certain cut-off time. If your family can make it to your assigned dining room in time, you can enjoy a meal there.

Just know that if you miss a dinner show one night, there's no second opportunity to see it again, even on longer sailings. So, if your family is set on seeing or participating in a certain dinner show, like "Animation Magic" – where you draw a figure on a special sheet of paper and it comes to life on screens around Animator's Palate – you will want to ask your dining team which night that show is being performed.

The cruise ship is a familiar home base with plenty of Disney charm

disney european cruise blog

Visiting new cities and towns can be as draining as it is exciting. Riding for hours in a bus and walking around all day in the warm European sun can wear out both adults and kids. Also, the stress of navigating different languages and unfamiliar cities can be unsettling if you're not used to it. That's why it's nice to have a friendly home base for your travels on a Disney cruise ship.

One of the biggest perks to cruising, in general, is that you unpack once. You don't need to deal with the hassle of packing up and swapping hotels mid-trip.

Upon returning to the ship each day, children can enter a familiar world where they have their stuff set up how they like in their cabin, they can interact with their favorite Disney characters, and they can join friends in the kids clubs to play games and swap stories about the day's adventures. Parents can relax and not worry about where to eat dinner in a strange city.

Around the ship, families will find plenty of familiar Disney fun, so evenings are easy and carefree. Most nights, families can watch a live performance in the main Walt Disney Theater or catch a movie in the Buena Vista Theater, including newly released movies currently playing in theaters at home.

If your kids are into meeting characters, they are in for a treat. Mickey Mouse and all his pals will dress up in themed outfits for the various European ports of call and come to the ship's public spaces for meet-and-greets.

The Disney princesses are also onboard to greet everyone and pose for photos. They also host tea parties, but parents be warned, the tea party is an added cost, and reservations fill up quickly.

Of course, no Disney cruise is complete without a deck party or two. On select Mediterranean sailings, fireworks will light up the sky over the Mediterranean Sea with Disney's iconic Pirate Night deck party.

Travelers can bookend cruises with Adventures by Disney short escapes

disney european cruise blog

Extending your stay in Europe is a great way to take advantage of flying halfway around the world to get on a Disney cruise. Take the hassle out of planning what to do before or after your cruise by booking an Adventures by Disney guided tour.

Families with kids ages 5 and older are allowed to book, though Adventures by Disney does suggest that kids are at least 6 years old. Children under 5 are not permitted on these tours.

The tours take place in Barcelona, London and Rome, all of which have associated ports that Disney Cruise Line sails from throughout its European season. The guided tours include meals, hotel accommodations, transportation to and from the ship and tours of the major sites in each city.

Escapes in Barcelona are four days long. Families can enjoy a privately guided tour of La Sagrada Família cathedral and Parque Güell, plus time at the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona and the medieval abbey, Santa Maria de Montserrat.

If your cruise departs from Civitavecchia, Italy, the Rome escape may be a fun add-on to your trip. The four-day tour includes a VIP Colosseum tour, a tour of St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums, and plenty of time to explore the city on your own.

Families departing on Disney Cruise Line from Southampton, England, can book the London escape , which is only three days. The trip starts with a high-speed boat ride on the River Thames and dinner at a local pub. Other activities on the tour include a private viewing of the Crown Jewels, afternoon tea and a private tour of St. Paul's Cathedral.

Bottom line

Whether you're a cruise pro or sailing around Europe for the first time, Disney Cruise Line makes sailing the historic coastlines of Europe easy and fun for families.

The ship makes for a familiar home base, with plenty of activities for kids and adults. The cruise line's shore excursions satisfy the interests of families exploring together while providing options for adults who need a more grownup experience in port. Just be sure to pack your walking shoes and a positive attitude!

A Disney Mediterranean Cruise Review – Disney Magic

By Eric Stoen on January 23, 2015 • Last Updated March 20, 2023 This post may contain affiliate links. Read my Disclosure here .

Disney Cruise Review: Leaving Venice

Disney Cruise Update s

This post was written after our first two Mediterranean Disney cruises. Our third cruise, in Northern Europe, wasn’t as good, mainly because the cold weather drove everyone inside which led to overcrowding and highlighted issues that we kind of glossed over on previous sailings. My open letter to Disney cruises on what they can improve is HERE .

Then in 2023 we took our forth Disney Cruise, on the Disney Fantasy, in the Caribbean. My review is HERE .

Planning for a Disney Cruise

January is a perfect time to think about not only doing a cruise with your kids this coming summer but doing a cruise with your kids next summer. Disney announces their summer cruise schedules roughly 16 months in advance and some of their popular and unique itineraries sell out quickly. If you’re interested in one of their sailings, grab a reservation before it’s too late.

So, that begs the question: should you be interested in one of their sailings? That depends on your family and your budget, but in general my answer is yes. It’s a great vacation for young and old alike, with some caveats.

We’ve now gone on two Disney Mediterranean cruises with our three kids. The first was to/from Barcelona, stopping in Malta, Palermo, Naples, Civitavecchia, La Spezia, Corsica, and Villefranche. The second of our Disney Mediterranean cruises traveled from Venice to Barcelona, visiting Athens, Ephesus, Rhodes, Crete, Mykonos, Santorini, and Malta. Our kids were 1, 3 and 5 for the first cruise and 4, 6 and 8 for the second. After a total of 24 nights on the Disney Magic, here are my thoughts:

Best Ages for a Disney Cruise

I touched on this in my post about the best ages to travel everywhere . We’ve seen everyone from babies just a few months old to people in their 80s on the cruises. Disney cruises do a good job of entertaining everyone, but it always looks to me like the teenagers are having the most fun on the ship. I honestly don’t think that kids under two are going to get much out of Disney cruises. Any other age will be able to find things to do.

Disney Cruise Review: Walking around the Disney Magic

Disney Magic Kids Club

A lot of people ask me about the kids’ clubs on Disney cruises. Honestly, of all of the things to do on the ship, the kids club hasn’t been a top choice of my kids. The club is well organized and well supervised, and there is an ever-changing agenda of things going on (like fairy tale hours or science hours), but whenever our kids have chosen to spend some time there, they invariably get bored after half an hour or so and want to leave. That’s likely not representative of all kids though.

Disney Magic Ship Activities

There are activities on Disney cruises for every age beyond the kids club. Our default on our Disney Mediterranean cruises was always the pools. The pools are good and never seem overly crowded, even on days at sea with 1,000 captive kids on the ship. Our kids enjoyed the waterslides, but I would highly recommend waiting to go them. The line for the Aqua Dunk – the slide that drops suddenly and shoots you in a tube over the side of the ship and back – was over half an hour the first day of our most recent cruise. But by halfway through the trip, there was no line at all.

Disney Cruise Review: Waterslide

If you don’t feel like the pool on your Disney cruise, there’s shuffleboard. There’s a sports court. There are movies always showing, including new Disney releases. There are constant character appearances. There are classes on napkin and towel folding. There are cooking classes. There’s a spa. There’s a gym. There’s Bingo (the only gambling on the ship). There are decent-quality, Broadway-type shows. There are magicians for kids. The list goes on. I always kind of preferred to relax with a book, but I think I was in the minority.

Disney Magic Rooms / Cabins

We booked a two-room Concierge suite on the first of our Mediterranean Disney cruises. It came with a personal attendant who would do things like bring us DVDs and popcorn, and surprise the kids with stuffed animals. The setup of the room on our Disney cruise was nice, with a larger bathroom and a dining table, but it wasn’t worth the money. We didn’t really need the option to dine in our room, and we didn’t watch too many DVDs or eat too much popcorn.

So the second cruise we instead booked two connecting rooms with balconies. This was far less expensive, and although there was a little wasted space in that we didn’t really need four sinks or six beds, it worked out great. Disney even removed the balcony divider for us so that we had one long balcony instead of two smaller ones. Just another reason to book far in advance: there aren’t many connecting rooms, so if you’re a family of five or more, you need to reserve them quickly.

Disney cruise review: The suite on our first Disney cruise

Disney Magic Food

The food on our Mediterranean Disney cruises ranged from not good to very good. There are three restaurants that you rotate among, with the same servers at each. While my foodie wife was fairly disappointed in the food quality, I was decently happy most nights (except when I ordered fish – it was usually really dry). My kids were nicely adventurous, going for venison, Cornish game hen, duck, and other more unique entrees off the adult menu far more often than they ordered off the kids menu.

One of the biggest letdowns during our Disney Mediterranean cruises was Greek Night, but really how is a kitchen catering to 2,500 people going to compete with the lunches in the local tavernas on the islands that we were eating every day?

Disney cruise review: Our lunch at a beach taverna in Crete was better than Disney's Greek-themed meal.

Disney Mediterranean Port Excursions

On our first cruise we did three official Disney port excursions. One was good and uncrowded – to Montserrat in Spain. One was decent but very crowded – to Pompeii. And one was terrible and crowded – a pottery-painting workshop for kids in Palermo, Sicily. What we took away from this was: never book the cruise-sponsored excursions! On our second cruise we did research well in advance, determined where we wanted to roam around by ourselves (Rhodes, Crete, Mykonos, Santorini) and where we wanted guided tours (Venice, Athens, Ephesus, and Malta), and then booked the tours with the top-rated guides on TripAdvisor.

All tours turned out to be far better than the previous Disney excursions, they were all at our pace, and they were all far less expensive than if we had booked through Disney. An added benefit was that each tour was timed to avoid the crowds from our ship and other ships. Every night on the ship when we were listening to other cruise-goers complain about their tours, we felt like we made the right decision.

My post on every one of our Disney cruise port stops, what we did and what we would recommend, is HERE .

Disney cruise review: Athens

The Disney Element

So obviously the cruise experience is largely Disney-themed. You’ll see characters walking around and posing for photos, hear a constant Disney soundtrack, and be very much surrounded by Disney while dining. What’s interesting is that the Disney experience is a bit of a time warp. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Chip and Dale – the old-school characters? They’re everywhere. And there’s a night dedicated to Pirates of the Caribbean – the 2003 movie more than the theme park ride.

But if you’re looking for characters from the most recent movies? Well, the younger passengers are dressed like them, but Disney largely ignores them. Frozen, the biggest animated movie of all time? There were a couple of character appearances, some screenings of the movie and a themed kids menu one night, but otherwise there was no sign of the movie – not at Animators Palate, the animation-themed restaurant, not on the soundtrack and and not in the shows. And we cruised a full eight months after the movie came out – plenty of time for Disney to have taken elements from it and incorporated them. Brave, Tangled, Up and Cars? Barely present. Yet if you’re a fan of the Emperor’s New Groove and Hercules, which not coincidently came out close to the Disney Magic’s maiden voyage, you’re set.

Disney cruise review: Frozen

My kids liked the overall Disney presence. I was fine with it. My wife by the end of the cruise very tired of the Disney theme and forced cheerfulness of all employees/cast members, feeling like she had been trapped in a theme park for 12 days. And even when you get off of the boat it’s not over – on the bus to the airport in Barcelona they were showing yet more Disney videos. Two weeks in Paris post-cruise worked nicely to remove us from a Disney mindset. And no, we didn’t go to Disneyland Paris or into the Disney store on the Champs-Elysees.

Disney cruise review: Lots of characters

Quality of the Experience

Having been subjected recently to a cruise on Royal Caribbean, I have to say that Disney cruises are far nicer, and Disney just does things better. On Royal Caribbean, there was a constant push by the cruise line to get you to spend more money – on alcohol, art, jewelry and gambling primarily. Disney cruises don’t hit you over the head with any of that. Sure there are the Disney Vacations desk and a few stores, but otherwise, there’s an overall appreciation that you paid in advance for the all-inclusive cruise experience and, other than wine, laundry and pirate costumes, there’s not much to add to the room tab.

Disney cruise review: Fireworks at the Pirates of the Caribbean deck party

Disney Magic Feedback / Summary

One thing that annoyed me on both of our Mediterranean Disney cruises is that there are plenty of areas in which Disney could improve, but they don’t seem to want to hear about them. There is a “comments and feedback” form at the end of the cruise that everyone is encouraged to return, but really it’s just a series of ratings and there’s no room for actual comments. And when I asked Disney about this on their web page, they quickly deleted the comment.

Despite that, I would recommend a Disney cruise if you want your kids to have fun in a safe environment for a week to two weeks, with (largely) interesting port stops. But definitely book in advance. When we took our Greek cruise in 2014, the following summer’s Norway cruises were already sold out. We booked our Summer 2016 cruise early in March 2015. Check Disney’s website ( http://disneycruise.disney.go.com /) for current availability.

Have you gone on a Disney cruise? What was your impression?

What We Look For in a Hotel

January 24, 2015 at 5:30 am

Kids or no kids I would certainly echo the point about organising your own excursions. I’ve only done one non National Geographic cruise, on Silversea in the Caribbean, and the organised tours were largely rubbish. I noticed that a number of people were hiring taxis and that was possibly a better option but now having searched for personal tour guides through Tripadvisor I would certainly do that if I was crazy enough to take another cruise. Another tip I discovered too late was a number of people left the ship at the last port stop (in USVI) and avoided the two days at sea to get to Port Lauderdale. If you’re time poor (or have better things to do, like flying to Rio 🙂 then cutting off a sea transit by flying out of the last port of call is something to consider.

Good advice on leaving the ship early, but it really depends what your goal of the cruise is. If you’re just looking for transportation to ports, then absolutely, cut off the last couple days. But with Disney, as far as the kids are concerned, days at sea are more fun than the port stops. If you’re there to make your kids happy – which really is the main goal of booking Disney in the first place – you wouldn’t want to shorten the cruise at all. You’d just be throwing money away.

Very informative and well written article! Thank you for sharing your adventure as we are very interested in exploring a Mediterranean cruise with Disney Cruise Lines. We just returned from our first Disney Cruise on the Disney Dream, and we are definitely hooked!

I’ve just booked our first one – to the Caribbean in June. We are not cruisers and prefer more active holidays, but are so exhausted that we are trying a bit more of a “relaxing” holiday. Thanks for this well-balanced review.

April 20, 2016 at 2:54 pm

Your daughter will love it! We’re doing our third this summer. Future ones will depend on whether the kids still find them fun and whether there are new, interesting itineraries. Would love for them to add an Asian loop!

Hi! We just booked the 7 day Meditteranean cruise for Sept. 2017 with my 7 year old and 9 year old. I don’t know the geography well of the ports so my concern is if we don’t book excursions in every place are there things to do in walking distance of the ports or would we need to get a taxi or other transportation. Thanks!

May 23, 2016 at 8:34 am

Hi KaraBeth. Once we’re back from our Disney cruise this summer, I’ll write up a blog post on what we did in all of the ports on our three cruises. In general it’s always fine to walk around where Disney docks. Civitavecchia isn’t interesting, but otherwise we’ve enjoyed exploring all of the places we’ve gone. Disney doesn’t provide much information on the ports on board, so do some research in advance – maybe print out city maps and figure out playground locations and good kid-friendly restaurants. Then you’re set. We’ve found that to be more enjoyable for the kids than joining excursions, and it gives you the flexibility to return to the ship whenever you want.

Hi We have also booked for sept 2017 I would be interested to know your plans for excursions We don’t want to get off at every port but feel Rome is a must visit although I don’t fancy being on a coach with a lot of people for a day

Hi! Can you please give me an inside scoop on how hard it is to get off and back on the ship for excursions?

I’m looking to book a Mediterranean cruise in 2016.

June 15, 2016 at 2:19 pm

In most ports you can walk off the ship and into town. In some you need to tender in. Regardless, it’s never taken us more than a few minutes to disembark or get back on the ship. In some places like Naples we went on and off the ship several times during the day since it was so easy and close to the center of town.

' src=

July 7, 2016 at 12:06 pm

Keep in mind that some ports do not let off in the “center of everything”. It all depends on what you’d like to see: Civitavecchia is a good two hours drive from Rome. Livorno is also about 1.5 hours from Florence and 30 minutes from Pisa. It is also about 30 mins to Pompeii from Naples.

July 7, 2016 at 10:57 pm

But those have been some of our favorite ports. Well, not Civitavecchia – there’s not much to see there. But we liked Naples a lot, just wandering around from where the ship docked. And when we stopped in La Spezia we spent the day in the small town and loved it. I’m not a fan at all of trying to see Florence or Rome in a day. A couple hours of driving each way to walk through one of the world’s great cities with 50 other people, take quick photos in front of a few major sites, and spend lots of time waiting for others during bathroom breaks? Nope, definitely not the way to experience an amazing destination. And crazy travel days like that aren’t kid-friendly either.

July 7, 2016 at 7:56 pm

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience . we are thinking about doing our first cruise with the kids this summer . Looking forward to read your review about Disney cruise , summer 2016 . by the way , did you have any problems with weather in the sea? strong wind for example ? and what about motion sickness , was it a problem ? wish you a pleasant vacation 🙂 and thanks again

July 7, 2016 at 10:49 pm

Hi Maha. On the two that we did so far, there was virtually no motion at all. Maybe once did we feel the ship rocking slightly? But that was in the Mediterranean. This time we’ll be in the north Atlantic, so it could be a little more exciting. Will keep you posted. When we traveled to Antarctica with NatGeo/Lindblad we had 32-foot seas – it felt like that scene in Frozen where the parents’ ship hits the huge storm! So anything less than that wouldn’t worry me too much. Others may be more sensitive.

July 11, 2016 at 6:41 pm

We just booked the 10 day Mediterranean cruise for 2017 summer. Are the excursions included or extra $$ If extra how much per person? Thanks

July 11, 2016 at 10:37 pm

Have a great time Lesha! Excursions are all extra, whether you book them through Disney or privately. I’ve found that with our family of five, private excursions can be comparable price-wise and offer a lot more flexibility. Excursions are anywhere between $50 and $200 per person depending on the activity. I usually budget $125 per person which is a reasonable average, for Disney or for private. The entire Disney list is at https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/port-adventures/europe/ .

On a Disney European River Cruise, Families Get Magic Minus the Mouse

Adventures by disney, in partnership with amawaterways, is one of several options for family-friendly river cruises in europe and beyond. a writer tested the experience out with her family—here’s what to expect..

  • Copy Link copied

Rolling through Europe along its inland waterways offers something for everyone in the family.

The author recently brought her family on an Adventures by Disney Danube river cruise to find out if it was smooth sailing for all involved.

Courtesy of Heather Greenwood Davis

The last time I cruised the Danube River, six years ago, the Christmas markets were in full swing, the only masks we saw were in the art shops of Vienna, and my husband and I, both securely in middle age, were among the youngest passengers on board.

On our cruise this past August on the same river, and with the same cruise line, AmaWaterways, none of that was true.

While we visited many of the same ports as we did on our original sailing, that’s about where the similarities ended. This time, we were sailing with Adventures by Disney, Disney’s tour operating arm, which has been partnering with river cruise line AmaWaterways since 2016 on family-focused itineraries. Our two sons, Ethan, 20 and Cameron, 17, were with us. We were comfortably within the age range of the adults on board (a far younger average than our original cruise), and most, like us, were traveling with their kids or grandchildren. As for masks, while they weren’t required on the cruise ship (being vaccinated was a requirement, however), given the ongoing pandemic, some passengers chose to wear them around others and we spotted some masked locals in the European countries we visited, including Germany, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia.

Another big difference on this river cruise: many of the excursions—including a marzipan pig–making lesson in Germany—were designed with kids in mind.

For those who perhaps have an aversion to the extravagant and themed experiences of Disney’s oceangoing cruise ships or the amusement parks, it’s worth noting that there are no Disney characters on board (unless you count the plush Mickey and Minnie on the welcome desk), but there is a pixie-dusted feeling to the way trips are run.

Families can cruise Europe in comfort on an AmaWaterways river cruise ship.

Courtesy of Adventures by Disney

While an Adventures by Disney river cruise isn’t in your face with the branding, the well-oiled machine that is Disney is clearly there, working behind the scenes to provide an enviable level of efficiency and service. And when Disney sets its sights on providing a magical experience, it consistently delivers. For instance, during an excursion to an apricot farm, two of the younger kids in the group seemed restless, so they were whisked off on a separate mission to find some baby bunnies and came back grinning when the boring schnapps tasting was over. When three out of four members of our family felt like staying on board as the ship cruised between two ports, Cameron joined a four-hour bike trip to the next port. When he returned to the ship, he shared some of the adventure with us over dinner, before the boys took off for late night shenanigans with some of the other teens in the lounge. That’s where the pixie dust comes in, creating a relaxed and seamless “something for everyone” experience.

Within a few hours of boarding our eight-day sailing with our sons, we felt the difference. My fear was that the boys would find the trip was either too juvenile or “kiddy” or too adult (read: boring). Instead, despite a wide range of kids on board (ages 5 to 20), adventure guides (Disney’s term for its activity hosts) facilitated connections, allowing the boys to find a groove with kids their own age and join us for activities when it moved them.

Based on our experience, river cruises offer a great way to spend some quality time together as a family, visiting numerous sites throughout Europe in comfortable accommodations with an active itinerary all laid out for everyone. But only a handful of river cruises cater specifically to families, and for those cruises, only a small selection of rivers are available. Because river cruise sailings tend to be more expensive than larger ocean cruises and seek to offer a luxury experience to match, it’s worth doing some research about the pros and cons before committing.

These considerations will help you make the right choice for your family.

What to know about taking a family-friendly river cruise

River cruise ships sail through the heart of Europe, offering families easy access to the cities and towns along the way.

River cruise ships sail through the heart of Europe, offering families easy access to the cities and towns along the way.

Entertainment options

Set your kids free on an ocean cruise liner and you’ll be lucky to find them again before you disembark. It’s not just the size of a ship or the crowds of people—thousands on a big ship versus fewer than 200 on a river cruise—but the sheer number of ways they can be entertained. You won’t find go-karts, waterslides, and sprawling kids’ clubs on river cruises. Most offer a small pool and some lawn games (corn hole and life-size chess among them), but the focus in terms of how you spend your time is mostly on the cities you’re visiting, not the onboard experiences.

Quality family time

Each river cruise itinerary is different, but all of them offer the opportunity to explore the cities you’re visiting together—either as part of an organized tour or to head out on your own, with just your crew. The majority of activities (both on and off the ship) are meant to be kid-friendly when the cruise is geared toward families, but considerable efforts are made to make sure they aren’t boring for parents, which helps to enhance time spent together. And most meals are enjoyed as a family in the common dining room on the ship.

Proximity to shore

Most European rivers run through the center of towns. That means it is easy to walk off the ship and explore when the planned excursion isn’t of interest. A local playground, museum, or the option to head back to the ship for some relaxation is also possible.

Everything is easier

Embarking and disembarking is a far easier process on a river cruise than on a big ocean ship. For instance, we were comfortably seated in the lounge within minutes of first walking onto the ship as we awaited our room keys. On a larger cruise ship, embarkation can take hours, and it’s not uncommon to be waiting in a busy landside terminal long after you arrive at the shore. And there are no overly formal nights, so packing is made simple, and parents aren’t fussing over kids who really want to play, not dress in clothes they can’t get messy.

Perfect for teens and tweens

On bigger ships, I’ve found that it can be tough for tweens and teens to find their rhythm—they might be too old for some of the kids’ clubs but too young for the night club. My sons quickly found younger passengers who they could hang out with. While previous river cruises I have been on often fell silent by 10 p.m., my sons reported late night conversations with new friends about favorite TikTok videos and college choices while soaking in the hot tub on the top deck. (One thing to consider is that the drinking age in some European cities is younger than that in North America. You’ll want to talk to your kids and the ship’s hosts about what is acceptable.)

Great for younger kids, too

Make sure to check the river cruise line’s age requirement; most have a minimum age of between two and four. Adventures by Disney is great with younger children, often giving them even more attention and creative options than some of the older, more independent kids. At the beginning of the cruise, the adventure guides host a no-parents-invited meet and greet. It’s a good way for all the kids to meet each other and find friendships that are cemented through special “just the kids” events throughout the week. At the end-of-trip karaoke night, the bond between the kids and their guides was evident in the hugs and tears shared over croaky notes and raucous laughter.

Accommodating a wide range of families

Our cruise had a variety of multigenerational and blended, step families, as well as passengers with various mobility needs. All were accommodated both in stateroom type and with special assistance during tours. But not every room on every ship has a connecting option, so some families may find they need to book more than one room to make it work. This can be an issue if you are traveling with smaller children and aren’t able to have larger or connecting staterooms.

The best family-friendly river cruises

On Uniworld family cruises, kids are split into two categories: junior cruisers (ages 4 to 12) and teen cruisers (ages 13-17), with corresponding activities for each.

Here are a few cruise lines that offer family-friendly river cruises with room configurations, public spaces, on-board services and amenities, and excursions and programming designed with families in mind.

Adventures by Disney/AmaWaterways

One thing that really makes the Adventures by Disney river cruises stand out are the adventure guides. The guides audition for the role and the result is cruises led by a high-energy group of talented individuals dedicated to family fun. A full ship generally has six guides on board who do everything from supervising pajama parties to organizing a karaoke night and leading active excursions. All of the adventure guides have photography training, which means that even when the kids are off doing their own thing with the guides (yes, Disney guides will occasionally take kids off on their own, which can be a major bonus for parents who want some alone time and for kids, too, who are happy for a break from their folks), you’ll get a peek at the memories they’re making. The minimum age to join a cruise is four, but Disney recommends age eight and older for its river cruises. Prices start from $4,799 per child and $5,299 per adult .

Tauck Bridges

Lauded as the first to offer a family river cruise in 2010, Tauck sticks to cruises in its family-friendly Bridges portfolio that run during school breaks and holidays and host a maximum of 130 passengers. Your fare includes all transfers to and from airports and hotels, gratuities, and even some off-ship meals and special events (in addition to all on-board meals, adult and kid-friendly drinks, and all shore excursions). The focus is on families exploring together so there are no dedicated kids’ excursions, but activities—like a knights tournament and hands-on medieval games at Devin Castle on the Danube family cruise, or a scavenger hunt inside the Louvre—ensure that everyone is having fun together. Newer ships have game spaces (there are board games are on all cruises and select cruises have video game options as well), a hot tub and small pool, and a small putting green. Tauck director guides organize trivia and movie nights, as well as family feud contests and a French food Fear Factor contest (that introduces kids to new foods like oysters) during evenings on board. The minimum age is three; Tauck recommends its river cruises for kids age eight and older. Prices start at $3,990 .

As part of its “Generations” collection, Uniworld has a unique approach to family river cruises. Kids are split into two categories: junior cruisers (ages 4 to 12) and teen cruisers (ages 13 to 17) and activities for each group are planned and run by two dedicated “family hosts.” They include movie nights, kids-only tables at mealtimes, and craft workshops that focus on the culture and traditions of the region the cruise is sailing through. On board, kids get a special VIP ship tour with the captain and can learn how to cook and make pastries with the ship’s chefs. There’s also a dedicated lounge where kids can hang out parent-free, and parents can also opt to leave kids on board for supervised activities while they go ashore. Each night kids get a surprise gift at turndown. Prices start at $3,199 per person .

The A-Rosa Sena offers something no other river cruise ship does—a dedicated kids club.

A-Rosa vessels feature a kids’ club for younger passengers.

Families with younger kids will love the German-owned cruise line A-Rosa with activities designed to match the ages of the kids on any particular sailing. The brand-new 280-passenger A-Rosa Sena , which launched in 2022, is leading a new wave in family river cruising. An entire deck of the ship has been set aside for families. It features family cabins with space for up to five people, a dedicated kids’ pool, and a full kids’ club with slides, mini climbing wall, ample games, reading nooks, and arts and crafts activities. The minimum age is two and kids need to be four to be able to access the kids’ club. The vessels often host a mix of passengers from Europe and the United States, and announcements are in German and English. This is another way to immerse younger travelers in the destination and expose them to other languages and cultures. Prices start at $1,500 for a one-week sailing , with discounted prices for kids (including those under 15 sailing for free on select departures).

Other things to consider before booking your family river cruise

Choose the itinerary based on what your family might be interested in. The Rhine is known for its ample castles, which might delight some in your brood. Sailing the Seine includes the showstopper Paris. No matter where in Europe you sail, there are often opportunities for biking on shore for more active families. Additionally, some family cruises will do a deep dive into the Sound of Music during a day trip to Salzburg, Austria (where many scenes of the movie were shot) during Danube cruises, for fans of the iconic musical. Christmas market cruises are another option for families who are feeling festive.

River cruise itineraries are typically around one week. If you want to extend your stay, consider the options offered by the cruise line and compare them with the costs and flexibility of planning that additional time on your own.

While excursion costs and tips are often included in your fare, the flights to get to and from your ports won’t be—and remember that you will start and finish in two different ports, which means booking either two different one-way flights to and from the United States or a flight or train ride back to the original arrival airport for a round-trip flight. Your budgeting should also account for a pre-embarkation or post-disembarkation hotel accommodation, if it’s not included with the cruise fare, depending on your flight options.

Lastly, itineraries can change based on rising and falling water levels. For instance, this past summer saw record droughts in Europe . Ships always anticipate the possibility of a wrinkle in the plan and often have alternate options available, but it may not be exactly what you and your crew expected from start to finish if weather woes get in the way.

What You Need to Know Before Going on a Disney Cruise in Europe

By Madison Owens Leave a Comment

Disney Cruise Line has been seeing a lot of changes lately, from different cruise requirements to relaxed health and safety guidelines .

disney european cruise blog

Now, requirements have been updated for Disney Cruise passengers visiting Europe , so let’s break them down!

If you are on a cruise departing from and arriving to homeports in Europe (including Barcelona, Spain; Civitavecchia, Italy; Dover, England; and Copenhagen, Denmark) you are required to follow certain COVID-19 vaccination and testing protocols .

disney european cruise blog

For  COVID-19 vaccinations , Disney Cruise Line requires all vaccine-eligible guests to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at the time of sailing (as defined by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization). This is a requirement for ALL guests ages 5 and over .

Disney Cruise Line accepts the following vaccine types:

disney european cruise blog

As for testing, guests who are not able to get a COVID-19 vaccine due to their age must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test result (paid for by the Guest) taken between 3 days and 24 hours before their departure date. Guests ages 4 and under have to complete these testing requirements . The test also has to be a COVID-19 nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), a rapid PCR test or a lab-based PCR test. Rapid antigen tests are not accepted .

Here are the details on submitting proof of these requirements :

In some cases, people who have recently recovered from COVID-19 may still test positive for the virus. If guests have tested positive for COVID-19 within 11 to 90 days of their sail date, they may qualify to be considered as “recently recovered.” With appropriate documentation and approval, these guests aren’t required to participate in the COVID-19 testing phases on their trip. To be considered recently recovered you need to provide:

Otherwise, ALL guests have to take a COVID-19 test at the terminal before boarding (paid for by Disney Cruise Line). If you test positive, you will be able to take a second test to confirm your status. If you are confirmed to be positive for COVID-19, you and those sharing the same room as you and you close contacts will NOT be allowed to board the ship .

Certain countries in Europe may have separate COVID-19 vaccination, testing, and documentation requirements for entry .

disney european cruise blog

Disney says guests are responsible for checking and meeting all of the requirements or restrictions that may be in place for travel to any homeport or port of call that is part of their cruise itinerary. If you do not meet the country-specific entry requirements, you may be unable to reach the port to get on your cruise or you might not be allowed to get off the ship at certain ports of call or your final destination . You can find where to visit the websites of each country to learn more about the government entry requirements on the Disney Cruise Line website .

It’s also recommended to keep checking these requirements because they could change at any time without notice . It’s important to know all of this information before you book a European Disney Cruise in order to be aware of the requirements. Stay tuned to DFB for more Disney news and updates.

10 Tips for Your Europe Cruise (Disney or Otherwise!)

Bonjour! I recently returned from an amazing 12 night British Isles cruise with Disney Cruise Line ! It was my third European cruise and I learn something every time I go! For various reasons, I find European cruises take more planning than standard Bahamian and Caribbean sailings. I wouldn’t recommend going in unawares! So here are 10 things I’ve learned. Hopefully they’ll help you out too!

1. Rent Mobile Wi-Fi – I can’t even tell you how what a lifesaver this was, and I’d like to publicly thank a commenter on a post of mine last year who told me about these devices! There are a couple of options here, you can buy a device and pay a fee based on the number of days you use, or rent a device and pay by the day for the rental period. The data is unlimited and you can use up to 5 devices at once. If you’ve got a cell phone signal, these handy little mobile devices create a Wi-Fi network for you. We chose to rent the device from Tep Wireless and we picked it up and dropped it off in Heathrow. It was a super easy process. I’m all for unplugging as much as you can on vacation, and I did. I had someone covering for me at work and I didn’t even look at it! But I had Wi-Fi! So I knew if there was an emergency or a question, they could get a hold of me. Being plugged in actually helped me unplug if that makes any sense at all! Plus, what fun it was to post to social media at will?! Or google when we had last minute questions about where we were going and what we were doing, or downloading handy city-specific apps (see #6 below). It was wonderful! We named our device (Jeb) and may or may not have gotten a little attached to it, making that the only hard part of turning it back in.

2. Skype App – Now that you’ve got Wi-Fi, you can also make incredibly cheap international calls with the Skype app. Our flight was delayed repeatedly leaving the US, and I knew our transfer company in the UK wouldn’t wait at the airport indefinitely for us. Unfortunately, they had an international number and I was dreading how much it would cost me to call them.  Until I checked out the Skype app. I bought a $10 Skype credit and called right from the app on my phone. Calls to most of Europe range from 2.3 to 10 cents a minute.  A minute!! There’s also a connection fee around 5 to 10 cents with each call, but even so, that $10 is going to last me for a very long time! We ended up using it a few times while traveling. We had to make an emergency phone call back to the states at one point and it was a lifesaver having the Skype credit to enable us to do so without mortgaging the house. It even came in handy when we got back home and I realized a hotel had overcharged us and I needed to call back to clear things up!

3. Facebook Messenger – Whether you’ve rented Wi-Fi or are finding free Wi-Fi as you go, you’re probably going to want a good way for people to contact you. As much as we love our iPhones, we have found iMessage on Wi-Fi to be unreliable. First, both the sender and recipient must have iPhones. Believe it or not, not everyone has an iPhone. Shocking, I know! Secondly, even when both parties had iPhones and iMessage, sometimes messages refuse to send. Or worse, sometimes you think they sent, and they actually are not received for a day or more. The quickest and most reliable form of communicating via Wi-Fi we found was via Facebook Messenger. It’s incredibly fast, and you will know both when it is sent, and when the receiver sees it. Depending on how you have your notifications set up, you’ll also know immediately when a message comes in. And bonus, it uses very little data to send pictures to someone if you are limited or paying for it! If you are not a Facebook user (gasp), there are other messaging apps out there that are also good! While in Newcastle, we used WhatsApp to let our English driver know when he needed to swing back by Alnwick Castle to pick us up—and yes, we downloaded the app using our mobile Wi-Fi device that very day. That was much more practical then friending our driver on Facebook, friendly though he was.

4. Converters – If you are staying in a hotel in Europe before or after your cruise, you’re probably going to need to purchase a converter for charging purposes (or flat iron/curling iron purposes!). Now if you’ve got multiple teenagers whose lives may end if they are unable to recharge their devices at night, you may be wondering exactly how many converters you are going to need. I’ve got good news! Many hotels these days have USB ports in the rooms. Genius! Our Marriott in downtown London even had a US plug for us to make it even easier. And once you’re onboard, your room is full of good old American outlets.

5. Off Board Battery – Bring it! Even if you are just using your phone for pictures, you’re going to want it! Someone in your group is going to run out of juice. Don’t be that person! We also used the extra battery to recharge our mobile Wi-Fi device once or twice.

6. Use Local Apps – If you are doing any traveling in Europe on your own, even in ports, downloading a few useful apps before you go will be an immense help. The first app I’d recommend is CityMaps2Go . Download maps from the cities you are visiting in advance. You can use it even when not connected to Wi-Fi. Next I would look for train apps (especially useful in countries like the UK which have extensive rail networks). While I’m experienced deciphering Metro maps, the Tube app for London and the Metro app for Paris still saved us a ton of time and made getting around so much easier. No more standing in front of the giant map deciding your best route while you may be missing your train. Plug in your destination and the app will give you your best possible route with every connection and detail you may need. While traveling in Paris, we were asked three separate times to help others with the metro. With my giant camera, we had tourist written all over us, but I would assume the fact that we looked like we knew what we were doing gave people enough confidence to ask us.

7. Day Passes or Ticket Booths – While I highly recommend public transportation, let me assure you, it’s not as cheap as you’d like. It’s convenient, fairly easy, and almost always cheaper than a taxi, but still not cheap. Do a little research to find the best way to do it.  In London, you may want to get an Oyster card or a Day Travelcard . We found a Day Travelcard with unlimited rides in the same day worked great for us. In Paris, buying a ticket book will get you multiple trips for less. In Rome, we saved a great deal buying a BIRG pass . Just a little bit of googling will save you time and money once you arrive.

8. Go On Your Own – Disney Cruise Line offers some amazing excursions, and I don’t want to discourage you from using them—and we use them as well. But sometimes they’re sold out! Other times they’re out of your budget.  And sometimes you just want to do your own thing. Do it! I wouldn’t recommend it if your intended destination is very far away from the port, unless you leave a lot of wiggle room! Recently Disney ended up leaving roughly 30 passengers in Dublin, when traffic kept their bus from arriving back to the ship on time and the tides dictated that the ship couldn’t wait. Luckily for these guests, they were on a Disney excursion and Disney took care of getting them to the new port the next day. Heed that warning. If you are on your own, not only will Disney not wait, they have no responsibility to get you to the next port either. Having said that, on European cruises we end up doing our own thing about 50% of the time. It’s easy to figure out what we want to see and then figure out if Disney has something that fits those needs. If we are completely unfamiliar with a city, we google “Top 10 things to do” in that city and we’ve got a great starting place. In Newcastle, we couldn’t find a Disney excursion that fit exactly what we wanted to do at a price we were willing to pay, so we hired a private car in advance using recommendations found on the internet and had a wonderful experience. In Liverpool, we bought Hop On, Hop Off tickets online (on a Groupon special actually) and it was a great way to see the city. In Guernsey, we found it was very easy to walk to the places we were interested in seeing, so that’s exactly what we did. There are so many great options out there! Don’t be afraid to use them and plan the day that will make you happy.

9. Rick Steves – I’m a big Rick Steves fan. That man has saved me more time and money in Europe than I can count. I’d definitely suggest checking out his books and/or website (and don’t forget videos! ) for tips for your destination. For Paris, we learned about the Museum Pass which saved us both money and a good couple of hours in line. In Rome, we learned about the direct exit from the Sistine Chapel to the Vatican which again, saved us a great deal of time. In other cities, we’ve learned both what to see and what we probably didn’t want to take the time to see. This man knows his stuff. He’s done the work, so you don’t have to!

10. Pack Light – This is absolutely the hardest for me, but it’s so necessary in Europe if you are doing any traveling before or after your Europe cruise. Trust me, you do not want to be getting on and off metros with large suitcases–and not all the train stations have accessible platforms for people needing mobility assistance. We took a train to Dover and while our luggage was manageable, we encountered several people struggling with large luggage that was not—including having to negotiate two big staircases. After our cruise was over, we were lucky and were able to send all our checked baggage back with my husband when he headed home to the US while we left for Paris for a few days, but even still we had to pack light to do that. We found escalators very hard to come by in Paris metro stops, so we were extra thankful to only have small rolling carry-ons to pick up and carry up the stairs. As I packed, I truly asked myself with each item I packed if it was worth the space it was taking up.  For about 3 pairs of shoes (that would have looked better than the ones I brought, but the ones I brought didn’t look bad), that answer was no! Did I need three different jackets or was one really good enough? It was. Was one cardigan enough for layering purposes, or was it necessary to bring multiple ones? It wasn’t. I packed less and I made it!  Now my husband probably should have spared some space for black dress shoes instead of the brown ones he brought for his dark suit, but in the spirit of low packing – we’ll forgive him! And maybe photoshop those formal night pictures…

Thanks for the great tips! You tip for renting mobile WiFi is game changing! Were you able to get coverage while at sea? We’re taking a 7 day Mediterranean cruise on the Disney Magic in September =)

Thank you for reading, Jojo! It was absolutely game changing for us. It didn’t work at sea, unless we happened to be close to land! 🙂

Thank you so much for all of the tips. I am planning a trip to Paris next summer and these tips will come in handy. I have been to Europe before, but this will be the first trip with my daughter who will be 10. That makes planning a bit different than when it was just me.

Thank you for reading, Tammi! I hope you have a wonderful trip!

Great article. We haven’t cruised Europe before but a lot of the hints are great for any European trip. I am a firm believer of packing light (took only carry-on for a 9 week trip to Europe in the past). And I was so pumped to see Rick Steves mentioned! I almost feel like Rick is a personal friend of mine, since through his guidebooks I almost feel like he travels with me on all of my trips!

One carry-on for 9 weeks?! You are my hero. 🙂

Living in the UK we are in Europe (which is not the same thing as being in the EU) but the plugs in most other European countries are different from ours. What we usually do is take one travel plug and plug in a trailing socket with 4 UK plug sockets – then we can charge up all our phones etc. and only need one travel plug.

That’s a great tip, Ruth! We brought one plug with multiple USB ports which came in handy as well!

How a Disney Cruise to Europe is different

W e’ve been on lots of cruises at this point. It’s really one of our favorite ways to vacation. But it’s important to know that not all Disney Cruises are alike. And for good reason! We are sharing how a Disney Cruise to Europe is different than what you might know about cruises from the U.S.

How is a Disney Cruise through Europe Different than other Disney Cruises?

Taking a Disney Cruise to anywhere in Europe is going to be a little different. From different cultures and different rules, things may not always seem to line up with how you remember them being done when sailing from the U.S. Never fear though, you’re still going to have the most magical time cruising through Europe.

European Cruises tend to be very port heavy

Almost no matter where you are sailing to or from, unless you’re taking a transatlantic cruise, most European Cruises are going to be quite port heavy. And by that, I mean you’ll likely be stopping at a lot of ports in comparison to how long the cruise is. You’ll often see 7-night cruises with as many as 5 port stops.  On our 11-night Disney Cruise in Northern Europe, we visited 8 different cities. For an 11-night cruise, that’s really a lot!

Though some people generally consider the cruise ship the destination, for a lot of U.S. travelers, the destination is the destination. So just be aware that these are often busier cruises with less downtime.

Fewer Activities on a Disney Cruise in Europe

Because the itineraries are so jam packed, there are usually less activities onboard. It’s actually a common complaint of travelers who sail in Europe mostly for the ship and not the places it stops because most programming wasn’t in full swing until after 4 or 5pm. It was like this on our Disney Cruise to Alaska as well. And there are a few reasons for it.  Since more people are getting off the ship than say they might in the Caribbean, there doesn’t really need to be as many cast members onboard for activities. So they let a lot more of them get off the ship to explore during the day.

Different Demographic and type of traveler

We talked a bit about this in our Alaska post as well. And honestly, a lot of it remains true here. There are cruisers and there are travelers. Though there may be some overlap in these types passengers, these groups of people are not necessarily the same. Many cruisers are there for the ship. They’re there for the food, for the entertainment. Sometimes they’re even there just to see the destination from the ship. They may get off the ship in ports, but it’s not their biggest priority and they generally will take a short excursion or explore on their own for a couple of hours to get back on the ship in time for lunch.

Travelers, however, are there for the places the ship is visiting. They want to see and explore. They want to spend as much time as possible in the port cities. And they want to experience more than just whatever is a 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal. These are usually the people who are trying to spend every last second at port as they can. And they’re mostly using the cruise ship as a place to sleep and transportation from one port to another.

This discussion actually became a point of contention in our cruise Facebook Group. Because for many of our European passengers, the ship was the destination. It’s easy to get around Europe, so they had already seen all of the places we were going. Many of them couldn’t understand why the Americans and Canadians were so hung up getting to see as much as possible. But for most of us US travelers, these were all new places.

Packing for a Disney Cruise to Europe

When packing for Europe, there are some things to consider. First of all, you’ll want to pack lightly. If you can fit it all in a carry-on, do it. Not only will this help you avoid potentially lost luggage. But if you are traveling anywhere beyond your cruise, especially if you plan for any train travel, you’re not going to want to be lugging lots of bags all over the place. So if you can’t manage just a carryon, try to keep it as minimal as possible.

Outside of packing lightly, you’ll want to make sure you have an international phone plan of some sort. We actually used an e-sim, which allowed us to have phone service at a really reasonable price. Additionally, be sure to bring some sort of RFID blocker. We like these RFID blockers for traveling to Europe , and actually use them pretty much any time you travel. Packable, reusable bags are also quite helpful. And generally a cross body bag , fanny pack or pick pocket proof bag is a great idea when traveling to any larger city to keep your belongings safe from petty crimes.

And though this may seem silly to have to say, it is so important that you know what the weather is going to be like for your specific destination. Many people in the US from what I have noticed, tend to use “Europe” as a very blanketed statement. When in reality, it’s a whole continent. With lots of different countries. Traveling to Greece in July is going to be seriously different than a cruise to Norway in August. So be sure to know what the weather is generally like and pack accordingly.  If you’re working with an authorized Disney Travel Planner , they can often help you with a full packing list based on your specific destination.

People Dress up more for European Cruises

If you’re from the United States and you’ve never heard people from other countries comment about how “casual” we are, well now you have. According to many people from other countries, we are very casual here. And, I mean, it’s true! Seeing people go to the grocery store in their pajamas is an occurrence you won’t likely find in many countries outside of the U.S. but there are times when I feel overdressed in my sweatpants. So, yes, we are a bit more casual in how we dress.

That being said, if you’re sailing in Europe, chances are a good amount of your fellow cruisers will be from Europe or surrounding areas. And they do tend to dress more formally. Not necessarily all day, but especially for dinners and evening entertainment. Even just running to Cove Cafe in the morning, you can often see passengers who took the time to dress a bit nicer for the day before leaving their cabin, rather than rolling out of bed and throwing something on to go grab coffee.

Truthfully, some people, whether they’re North American or not, just enjoy dressing up for dinner on a cruise. It’s a thing! But in general, you will find more people dressed up on the ship than say a standard cruise around the Caribbean.

Food will be different on a Disney Cruise through Europe

A lot of people love cruises for the food. And of course they do, the food is pretty great! But, when you’re sailing in Europe, it’s important to note that much of the food you’re used to if you’re from the U.S. is going to be a bit different. The food comes from Europe, generally whichever area the ship happens to be sailing around. So you’ll often notice food items that are just different. For example, cheese is not quite as salty, and dairy products in Europe are actually entirely than they are in the U.S., so for example if you’re ordering a pizza from the upper decks, it may not be as flavorful as you’re used to. The soft serve is not the same mix as we have here. And the beloved chicken tenders will likely be a bit different too.

None of this is bad though. We actually preferred most of the food in Europe over some of what we get when we sail out of the U.S. Though this is entirely a matter of personal taste. So it may or may not be for you. Just be aware that the food may taste and look different than what you’re used to.

There may be different rules on a Disney Cruise to Europe

If you’re an avid cruiser and have spent most of your sailings in the Caribbean, be prepared for some potential disrupt to what you might be familiar with. Things like local rules and processes make shake things up a bit for you, so try to stay flexible and understanding when things don’t go like you thought they might.

A couple examples of this? During our 11-night cruise in Northern Europe, as we were sailing away from Fredericia, Denmark, it was announced that no alcohol would be sold, and that the shops had to stay closed for the next two days until we were no longer in Danosh waters. Why? Well, they never gave us a specific reason. But it was the topic of discussion for the rest of the cruise. And many passengers speculated that it had something to do with taxes or fines. Additionally, on our last sea day, as we were sailing to Southampton, we were told that UK officials required in person passport inspections. This was a huge inconvenience and took up several hours for some guests. But it was required. So, there wasn’t much that could be done about it.

My point is that some things may change during your sailing, some rules may be put into place that you don’t like. But at the end of the day, you’re not in the U.S. anymore. So you have to go with the flow and accept whatever rules may be different as a result.

The drinking age is different on European Cruises

21 is the drinking age in the U.S., but that’s not the case for most countries in Europe. Each country has their own laws about drinking age. But for Disney Cruise Line, when sailing from Europe, if you’re 18, you are able to drink on your Disney Cruise. Now this does come with some restrictions. First of all, your parent or guardian must go with you to Guest Services and fill out a waiver. Currently, this can only be done onboard. Additionally, as an 18-year-old, you are generally only allowed to be served alcohol when you are with your parent or guardian. So, though it might seem like a good idea to go hang out at one of the bars with all your friends from the 1820 society, that’s not generally how it works.

Now I don’t know how strict they are about enforcing this rule. However, when I sailed with my daughter during her graduation trip and signed the waiver that allowed her to drink, they made sure I was with her every single time she ordered a drink.

This isn’t an all-encompassing list as things may be different from sailing to sailing. But we hope this has been helpful for you to see how a Disney cruise to Europe might be different!

i just checked the Fantasy cruises in Europe for summer 2025. Expensive!! Insanely so!

' src=

ALWAYS! The prices get more insane with every release it seems…

' src=

They continue to make poorer choices each season for their loyal customers. As a Platinum member who was approaching Pearl, all Marine family and had never sailed as another line, they priced us out. We have moved to another cruise line. I glance back hoping. ????

' src=

Bummer. Nothing new or exciting. I was hoping for more. I guess I’ll save lots of pennies!!

' src=

I thought I found a winner with the 7-Night cruise to Ireland & Scotland but its during September unfortunately.

' src=

So the Wish & Magic will be at port Canaveral at the same time? How will that work, reference 9/19/25

' src=

The cruise line has had an agreement in place with Port Canaveral to use Cruise Terminal 10 on multiple ship days. When CT8 was upgraded, there was also some work done inside CT10 to facilitate Disney Cruise Line’s requirements for a terminal experience.

' src=

Day trip from Southampton to Cherbourg. Nice

' src=

Nothing new or exciting. I wish they would move the British Isles, Norwegian Fjords or Northern Europe cruise to July, then I’d do a B2B2B. We are going to bide our time to see what happens with the Adventure itineraries out of SIN. Maybe we’ll stay closer to home and go back on the Magic out of PC on a few dates.

And you Scott ? Anything you booked ? I wish you would give your own “recommendations” !

We are heading back to Europe to visit ports in Spain. It is hard to put out a general recommendation. There are a lot of great options, but we picked an itinerary that offered something new to us.
