Amazing food is served there!

The Mushroom Farm Campsite & Cafe

Returning for a second time, the chalets still charming. However, it seemed like attention to maintenance has been lax. The owner was not in the country, the employees were trying very hard to be accommodating, however funds seemed to be lacking to keep up with the servicing. The Lodge has the potential, please don't let it fail!

  • Cleanliness

This is a pleasant little lodge. We stayed in chalets, and found them to be cute, but a little lacking on the details. My chalet was called chambo and was super cute, but the hot water in the shower didn't work and there were lots of dead bugs on the top of my mosquito net (yuck). Plus a ginormous dead bug IN my bed on my clean sheets. There was also a lot of dust at the edge of the roof indoors. It was fairly priced at 15,000 kwacha including breakfast. It looks like they are making improvements to the main lounge and this will be nice. Food was okay, not great. Breakfast was fine. Dinner mediocre, but you have to remember where you are. I'd return and I hope these comments will help the management check on the rooms before they are rented.

  • Sleep Quality

A gated Lodge, with beautiful gardens! Truly a pleasant surprise! The chalets, very charming, all with different animal themes! Restaurant very lovely with outdoor and inside seating. The food was very good, having just come from the Mushroom Farm, were we had been spoiled... Having said that we had been traveling in Malawi for two weeks- this was a bit of heaven! Quiet and peaceful! We traveled from here to Nyika National Park, 1/2 hour away. Lovely place to return to- a hidden gem! We would stay again!

We spent a night in Rumphi during our trip through Malawi and were very positively surprised to find such a decent and nice place to stay in Rumphi. Reservation was easy via phone and with 18,000 MK for a double with breakfast very good value for money. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, the food excellent (who would expect to get a mushroom quiche for dinner in Rumphi!), the chalets conveniently and nicely set-up and clean. The lodge is part of an orphan care project and the proceeds from the lodge will benefit the project, another good reason to stay there. Highly recommended!

We stayed at Mathunkha one night, because we had car issues and this needed to be solved in Rumphi. Chalets are nice, there is a seperate bathroom with garanteed hot water. There is a kind of orphanage nearby, and you hear the children singing in the morning. Restaurant food is not so good. We have eaten much better in Malawi. En also the portions are small. Only thing that was disturbing me, is the pricing. The prices are mentioned in the brochure that is in every room. Also prices of meals are mentioned on the menu. However, every time we wanted to pay, the guy in the restaurant/reception asked more than what was advertised. He asked 2 dollars more for the meal (Ok, we didn't ask a question and just paid), and the next day he asked 10 (Ten!) dollars more for our stay. I refused to pay that and had to go back to our chalet and bring the brochure to show him what the advertised price was. The brochure said 35 dollar, the receptionist/waiter said we had to pay 45. According to him there was a price raise. I didn't believe him and had the feeling he put some money into his own pocket, because he did not want to adapt the bill in writing. This means the extra's disappeared into his pocket. My tip to the manager is (and I know he is Dutch): if you want to be trustworthy towards tourists, hire people that are honest and be clear and straightforward about prices.

MANDHARI LODGE

Aligned with soaring flamingos, Mandhari Lodge is situated high on the Manyara Escarpment which forms part of the Great Rift Valley. ‘Mandhari’ means ‘view, scenery, landscape’ in Swahili, and with a bird’s eye view of the great expanse from Lake Natron to Mondulli Mountains and across Lake Manyara, this lodge offers breathtaking views from sunrise to sunset.

Swaddled in the colours of the earth, the lodge offers a unique medley of accommodation options; nine dramatic, glass-fronted standard suites, one honeymoon nest suite. All suites and villa have an unobstructed view across the dreamy landscape below.

With 100% locally sourced materials, the lodge has been built with a passion for it’s environment and a respect for its beloved history. The large, core gathering area of reception, dining, lounge, bar and swimming pool is largely an open, eucalypt platform filled with hand-crafted furnishings and woven delights.

Use the lodge to delve into the hearts of Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park and Ngorongoro Crater – or simply remain in the grasp of its surroundings with an extensive range of cultural delights to absorb; traditional spa treatments, highlands hiking, Tinga Tinga painting lessons, Swahili cooking lessons, African drumming, customary dancing, the ancient art of yoga and more. Mapula Lodge

Aerial view of Mapula Lodge deck

Insider’s Review of Mapula Lodge

Mapula pays tribute to the world-uniquely wondrous Okavango Delta with its imaginative design and its location on a foresty island beside a lyrically beautiful, hippo-thronged lagoon in the midst of a private concession in Botswana 15 times the size of Manhattan. Created by the founders of the legendary Jack’s Camp in the neighbouring Kalahari, Mapula is a stylish, delightfully small, Afro-chic lodge that offers Micato safariers generous doses of natural magnificence, the luxury of modern comforts, and cheery Botswanan hospitality.

Interior of Mapula Lodge bedroom

Accommodations at Mapula Lodge

Mapula’s nine canvas and thatch tents are full of luxury and African character—as we’d expect from the Bousfield family of Jack’s Camp fame. Their combination of the full range of modern conveniences with old-fashioned brass lanterns, bright kilim rugs, and Malwai chairs in the lounge area, is delightful. En suite bathrooms feature both indoor and outdoor showers, and the king-sized four-poster beds, replete with feather-filled pillows, are, as the Bousfields say, ideal “for falling face first into after a day’s game viewing.”

The lodge’s aquamarine swimming pool, also a fine place to fall into, looks out at the lagoon (there’s nothing quite like watching hippos splash and massively yawn in the lagoon while one lolls in a pristine pool only yards away). Watching wildlife from the lounge area from a comfortable armchair while sipping a cold drink is similarly enchanting. And in the evenings, a homey fire in the lodge’s chill pit is a fine place to chat about the day’s game-viewing and nature-immersing activities.

Activities and Attractions at Mapula Lodge

There is no place on earth like the Okavango Delta, as we point out many times on this website. And once again, we’ll quote the great naturalist photographer Frans Lanting, who wrote in his enraptured book Okavango: Africa’s Last Eden, that “the [Delta’s] very existence in the middle of the Kalahari is nothing short of miraculous…like a dream.”

So our focus in Mapula is game and nature viewing in some of their most wonderfully unique forms. We float out from Mapula in dugout canoes, wending lush waterways, on the look-out for the Delta’s full African cast of characters: hippos by the podful; soaring fish eagles—just one of the Delta’s more than 400 bird species; rare sitatunga water antelopes and many red lewche antelopes; and, “one of the Okavango’s delights,” Frans Lanting writes, “the sheer surprise of seeing an elephant emerge from underwater.”

We take walks on the Delta’s mini-savannah islands and venture further on safari vehicles into the surrounding dry land, whose forests and golden plains are home to healthy lion populations (“The sight of a lion goes straight to the heart,” as Isak Dinesen wrote), herds of thundering Cape buffalo, intriguing wild dogs, and giraffes floating across the grassland.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
