Show was fantastic. My great disapointment was with my seating and tickets. A made a point of coming to the garage to see the seating arrangement BEFORE I bought my tickets to make sure I would not be stuck in the middle of a long isle with people climbing over my wife and myself. So I looked at seating chart and looked at the actual seating, then SPECIFICKLY ask for and purchased two seats at the end of isle in section 2. To my great disapointment, the isle was now gone, filled in with extra seats. We were now in the middle of a Long isle. And our vision was blocked by others who were busy making video while blocking us. As a patron for last 3-4 years, I've been recommending you guys to all my friends, Friday was a big disapointment from the last 7 or 8 shows we've enjoyed as avid SMOOTH JAZZ fans. Hope we don't have that problem again. Looking forward to attending some of the upcoming events, hope things will be better. Thanks for letting me VENT. ERIC V DAVIS.

The Berlin Spectator

Slap Bass Master Marcus Miller to Perform in Germany

' data-src=

For decades, Marcus Miller has influenced the way Funk and Contemporary Jazz sound today. Nobody plays like him, nobody sounds like him, and nobody performs like this guy. The best part? He will finally be touring Europe again, including Germany.

Berlin, September 30th, 2022 (The Berlin Spectator) — Two of the world’s greatest slap bass heroes, Bernard Edwards and Louis Johnson, died in 1996 and 2015, respectively. Others are still with us, including Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Mark King, Khari Cabral Simmons and Julian Crampton, just to name a few. There is yet another brilliant slap bass giant on this planet: Marcus Miller.

Influential Sideman

Here is a bass player who was just important and influential as a side man as he is as a bandleader today. His impressive discography with fellow artists includes some of the greatest Jazz-Funk albums of all time. ‘Browne Sugar’ by the trumpeter Tom Browne is on the list. Yes, it’s the one that includes killer tunes such as ‘Throwdown’ and ‘Promises for Spring’. The late Grover Washington’s 1980 record ‘Winelight’ is part of it too. So is the late Bernard Wright’s ‘Nard’ album.

Hey! Let’s not forget Miles Davis, Lonnie Liston Smith, David Sanborn, Don Cherry and The Crusaders. Marcus Miller from New York City recorded with all of them. In 1981, he influenced Luther Vandross’ debut album ‘Never Too Much’ prominently. People who listened to ‘She’s a Super Lady’ or to ‘You’re the Sweetest One’ on the next album ‘Forever, For Always, For Love’ were stunned. Behind Luther Vandross’ unbelievable voice, this young bass hero delivered slapping sounds that were out of this world. His name was Marcus Miller, and he still does it, but mainly with his own bands.

Huge Following

Miller’s first solo album ‘Suddenly’ was released in 1983. Since, the bass master, composer, producer and vocalist has recorded twelve more. On those albums and on stage, he touches quite a few genres, from Soul and Funk to Jazz-Funk, Jazz-Rock and more intellectual kinds of Jazz. All of his material is stunning. Marcus Miller killed it when he did ‘Gimmie the Goods’ with Boz Scaggs and countless other stars on a TV show in the late 1980s, he did when he hit the stage at the festival the author of these lines organized in Bulgaria in 2007, and he does on all of his albums and in all of his concerts.

Miller has a huge following. Before Corona messed up the world, he was one of the few artists who could sell out the Fabrik venue in Hamburg twice in a row. He toured so much he probably met himself at J.F.K. Airport, in Heathrow or at some run down rest stop on the German Autobahn. Soon, he will be back in Europe, including in the German-speaking world.

Hamburg and Munich

France, Hungary, Czechia, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Poland are part of the tour plan. On November 2nd, 2022, he will be performing in Zurich. Three days earlier, on October 31st, Marcus Miller and his band are scheduled to raise the roof at Den Atelier in Luxemburg City. Twice, they will be performing at Porgy & Bess in Vienna, on October 26th and 27th. The only three gigs in Germany will be taking place at Munich’s Muffathalle on October 29th, at the legendary Fabrik in Hamburg on November 8th, and in Leverkusen on the 9th.

Tickets for Marcus Miller’s concerts in Germany, Austria and Luxemburg can be purchased here . His entire tour schedule is listed on his own website .

Marcus Miller

European tour 2023.

The composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller is one of the most influential musicians of his era.  Since the mid-1970s, the bassist has played on more than 500 albums and collaborated with Aretha Franklin, George Benson and Al Jarreau, not forgetting Miles Davis, for whom he wrote and produced  Tutu  in 1986.  Now focused on his solo career, the slap master has released over a dozen albums and composed around 20 film soundtracks.  Always keen to convey a message in addition to his unstoppable groove, his most renowned releases are  Afrodeezia – a tribute to his ancestors, and  Laid Back,  a formidable synthesis of R&B, funk, hip-hop and jazz.  A firm favourite at the Montreux Jazz Festival since his first appearance in 1981, Marcus Miller left an indelible mark in 1997 with “Legends”, an ephemeral supergroup formed with Steve Gadd, Joe Sample, Eric Clapton and David Sanborn.

Marcus Miller, in concert at the Jazz à la Villette Festival, in Paris, on August 29, 2019.

On Saturday, April 2, the Marcus Miller Band made its big return to Europe. After two years of suspended life, cancelled trips and postponed announcements, it sounded like trumpets heralding spring at La Seine musicale, in Boulogne-Billancourt (Hauts-de-Seine). Marcus, the outstanding musician, fiery leader and great composer, was back! This was first date of a European tour, which will pass through the major French festivals this summer (Sète, July 15, at the Théâtre de la Mer; Les Nuits de Fourvière, in Lyon, on July 24; and Jazz in Marciac, of course, on July 26) before embarking on new adventures.

Born in Brooklyn on June 14, 1959, Marcus Miller is one of the heroes of an era marked by James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Sun Ra, Jaco Pastorius, Albert Ayler, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock. He is the master of fusion: psychedelic rock and drone metal or whatever you like, but always with the blues in his belly and jazz in his heart. Marcus is called Marcus, as his father was called Marcus. His grandfather was very close to Marcus Garvey, the great black activist (1887-1940).

Speaking with Le Monde from Los Angeles, where he lives with his family, he said: "We're coming out of a difficult period. Traveling had become an obstacle course... Richard Bona toured Europe last year. He and his musicians had to have 27 PCR tests in one month! Each country had its own requirements. It's finally becoming more flexible." He, meanwhile, was writing for film and television. "Streaming flourished during the pandemic," said Marcus. "As I was not on tour, I was afraid of losing contact with my European audience, especially in France. I read Le Monde every day, my French has deteriorated quite a bit, I am eager to reconnect."

A joyful and virtuoso solo

Marcus Miller is an exceptional composer and bass player, with a cheeky adolescent svelteness. He looks after himself. Always wearing his little flat-rimmed felt hat, known as a "Pork Pie Hat," made famous by Buster Keaton, Frank Wright and in particular the dreamy saxophonist, Billie Holiday's lover, Lester Young. As soon as he leaps on stage like a cat, Marcus charges down the front of the stage with a rock attitude, lining up a blistering solo on his 1977 Fender Bass. A joyful, mischievous solo, a brilliant slap (his way of slapping the string on the neck), a virtuoso solo, of course, if virtuosity continues to stun simple souls. But above all, a solo with a sparkling musicality. Besides, the cats who excel at the Fender Bass (the instrument can be found second-hand, on Reverb.com, from €2,839) – there are not that many of them – slap exactly like that. The only problem is that even Marcus himself can never reproduce his opening solo exactly the same every time.

Marcus Miller European Tour 2023

Marcus Miller , a man-institution – multi-instrumentalist, composer (including film music), arranger, leader of his own formations, the most desirable session musician of leading jazz, fusion and pop stars, vocalist, songwriter and finally an efficient producer, well sensing new trends.

Miller’s name is immediately associated with the bass guitar. And rightly so, because he is the greatest virtuoso of this instrument since Jaco Patorius. It is worth remembering, however, that Miller is a classically educated… Clarinetist (he plays mainly the bass clarinet), only later mastered the keyboards, soprano saxophone and bass – he copes with each of these instruments perfectly.

The second association – Davis’ musical partner and co-creator of many of his successes in the 80s. The period with Miles was perhaps the most important chapter in Miller’s career. He played with him on the albums The Man with the Horn (the trumpeter’s first album released after his “health leave”), We Want Miles , Star People , Tutu , Siesta , Amandla . The closest to Polish fans is Tutu (1986), on which “our man” played Michał Urbaniak – his solo electrifies to this day. For Miller it was also a breakthrough album, from that moment he began to play the role of court composer in Davis’ band, as Shorter had in the Second Grand Quintet. On Tutu , he wrote and arranged most of the songs, as well as controlling the entire production. He did not hesitate to use the latest technology (samplers, drum machines, effects, modeling and sound recording devices), creating a pattern of sound and studio work that was widely imitated in the 80s. and later. His contribution to this project was so huge that malicious people claimed that Miles was not a leader, but only… sideman on his own album. Miller was also emotionally connected with the material of this album – in 2010 he produced its live version, Tutu Revisited , with Christian Scott on trumpet.

From the beginning he focused on music, electric music and lighter genres, today his style is a perfectly balanced combination of jazz, funk, fusion, soul and R&B.

Apparently, Miller likes to come to Polish, but strangely enough, he always avoided Krakow. And finally he came to us. The electric bass giant and his band will play at the ICE Kraków Congress Centre on July 17, funk-jazz fans get ready for a big event.

It has been really exciting for Marco working and developing a series of products with Marcus, as since the moment he started building his very first amp he has been thinking about him. It’s not just an endorsement but a dream coming true.

As a multi-instrumentalist, Marcus is highly proficient as a keyboardist, clarinetist/bass clarinetist and, primarily, as a world-renowned electric bassist, topping critics' and readers' polls for three decades. His résumé as an A-list player brims with over 500 recording credits as a sideman on albums across the spectrum of musical styles: rock (Donald Fagen and Eric Clapton), Jazz (George Benson, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Sample, Wayne Shorter and Grover Washington, Jr.), pop (Roberta Flack, Paul Simon and Mariah Carey), R&B (Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan), hip hop (Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg), blues (Z.Z. Hill), new wave (Billy Idol), smooth jazz (Al Jarreau and Dave Koz) and opera (collaborations with tenor Kenn Hicks and soprano Kathleen Battle). As a film music pro, Miller rose from writing the go-go party classic "Da Butt" for Spike Lee's "School Daze" to becoming the go-to composer for 20+ films (from the documentary “1 Love” to the animated children’s fable “The Trumpet and The Swan” to the Eddie Murphy/Halle Berry classic “Boomerang”).

As a producer, writer and player, he was the last primary collaborator of jazz legend Miles Davis, contributing the composition and album "Tutu" to the canon of contemporary jazz music. The breadth of his collaborative talents were best showcased in his work with the late, great soul man Luther Vandross, contributing to well over half of his albums as a producer, composer and/or player on a string of hits capped by "Power of Love/Love Power" for which Marcus won his first Grammy, 1991’s R&B Song of the Year.

And starting with David Sanborn's 1980 album Hideaway and its follow-up Voyeur (for which the alto sax giant won a Grammy performing Marcus' composition "All I Need is You"), Marcus not only left an indelible mark on Sanborn’s distinctive sound, he laid the often-copied blueprint for the coolest of contemporary jazz sounds.

After two R&B-leaning solo albums for Warner Bros. in the `80s followed by co-leading The Jamaica Boys (with drummer Lenny White and singer Mark Stevens), Marcus took a hiatus then returned rejuvenated with the galvanizing The Sun Don't Lie (1993) and Tales (1995), both of which found him brilliantly connecting the dots of Black music's evolution. Following the fan-demanded Live and More in 1997, Miller released M2 ("M-Squared") on his own 3 Deuces Records label and won his second Grammy, 2001’s Best Contemporary Jazz Album. A second double live CD, The Ozell Tapes: The Official Bootleg (2003) came next, followed by Silver Rain (2005) and Marcus (2008) (released as Free in Europe and Asia) featuring his Grammy-nominated crowd-rouser of Middle Eastern Funk, “Blast.”

2007 found Marcus in a new realm, as host of the North Sea Jazz Cruise, followed by the Playboy Jazz Cruise in 2009 and subsequent Smooth Jazz Cruises annually. In 2008, he co-led the all-star bass trio S.M.V. with Stanley Clarke and Victor Wooten for an album (entitled Thunder) followed by an extensive world tour. A concert Marcus arranged and produced with his own band and The Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra featuring trumpeter Roy Hargrove and vocalist Raul Midon was recorded the same year and subsequently released as A Night in Monte-Carlo. In the fall of 2009, Marcus put together a new band of young musicians for “Tutu Revisited” – a project that started as a special one night only event to coincide with the acclaimed We Want Miles exhibit at Cité de la Musique in Paris – then became a two-year global sensation beautifully captured for posterity on the CD/DVD Tutu Revisited featuring Christian Scott. In 2011 Marcus went on from Tutu Revisited to co-lead another trio DMS, a funk-jazz collaboration with George Duke and David Sanborn. In the summer of 2012 Marcus conceived of and produced the “Tribute to Miles” tour, a 9-city tour of Europe with fellow Davis alumni Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, in which they presented their unique vision of every era of Miles’ music.

Now, duly fortified and deeply inspired, Marcus Miller returns to composing and exploring new music of his own on Renaissance with a sharper focus than ever before, a new band of curious and like-minded young musicians, and a mission to travel the world – country by country, city by city, venue by venue – to take the message of this musical movement straight to the hearts, souls and minds of the people.

  • "I can immediately get my sound from my "Little Marcus" signature heads. But these amps not only let you sound like me, thanks to the five band EQ and the new "Old School" and "Millerizer" filters, you can get ANY tone you need, no limits!!!
  • "My signature Markbass cabinets have a really fat low end thanks to the rear-ported design – and the highs are ultra focused thanks to brand new 1 inch "Voice Coil" tweeter. Also the angled cabinet design allows me to use these cabinets either in the standard vertical position or as a floor monitor hearing myself perfectly on stage."

Marcus Miller on the stories behind 5 of his iconic recordings

The prolific sideman and solo artist takes us behind the writing and recording of some of his standout tracks

Marcus Miller performs on stage at Teatro Nuevo Apolo on May 28, 2019 in Madrid, Spain

Marcus Miller has so many strings to his bow that his four-string mastery is only one part of his stellar career. Born on 14 June, 1959, he has composed music for movies, worked as an arranger and a record producer, and played with the likes of Luther Vandross and Miles Davis. Miller was also a member of the Saturday Night Live house band in the early Eighties, and of his 500-plus recordings, he has featured in sessions with Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Elton John and Chaka Khan. In addition to his work as a sideman, Miller’s solo career has yielded several esteemed recordings, including 2007’s M2 , which won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.

He showed us at a very young age that his eyes were focused well beyond the bass. Stanley Clarke

“The main difference between working as a sideman and as an artist is that as a solo artist you are the storyteller," he says, "you are the one trying to put a message across and tell people how you feel. The artist has a very particular point of view, but a sideman doesn’t. What’s really valuable as a sideman is the ability to just make yourself who you need to be.” We sat down with Marcus to find out the stories behind five of his iconic recordings.

1. Luther Vandross - Never Too Much (1981)

"Luther and I were both in Roberta Flack’s band. He was singing background vocals and I was playing bass, and we got pretty tight. He was one of the most popular background singers in New York at the time, but he wanted to be his own artist and one day he called and asked me to play on his demo. He got the session set up sometime on a Sunday morning – that was the only day he could get any studio time, and Nat Adderley Junior, who is the son of Cannonball Adderley’s brother, was the piano player who was accompanying Luther. Luther and Nat arranged this song, that had an important bass line, called ‘Never Too Much’. I told them I liked it, but it was kind of weird, and they just told me to shut up and play! So I played a couple of lines of my own and that demo ended up being the actual record; we never recut it. He got a record deal and just kept rolling with that song."

2. Marcus Miller - Moons (1993)

"This company, Modulus, sent me a bass out of the blue. I thought it had a really nice sound and I wrote ‘Moons’ as a vehicle for that. I was also coming into my own on the bass clarinet so I played bass clarinet on the bridge of that song. That song is cool because people discover that song late; they say, 'Oh, Marcus can only play with his thumb,' and then they will listen to ‘Moons’ and readjust their opinions!"

3. Miles Davis - Tutu (1986)

"I was in a hotel listening to some album; it was something corny from the 80s, but it had a high bass line and a low bass line, and I remember thinking to myself, 'That’s cool, man; one day I am going to write something like that.' Tommy LiPuma, who was an executive at Warner Brothers, called me to say that Miles had signed to Warner Brothers, so  I asked if he needed some tunes and he did, so I offered to write something. I hung up the phone and instantly in my mind was the riff 'dum de dum dum dum' (sings the riff to ‘Tutu’), I mean instantly. So I thought, 'Man, I am going to add another bass line to this.' I had this fretless line that I played with the lower fretted bass holding down the groove, and it was cool because I had all these elements swimming around in my head. When I was in his band a few years before that, I remember Miles showing Al Foster a drumbeat that he had; he said it was called the 'New Orleans 2-Step'. I thought it would be nice to use some elements that I knew Miles liked, so I used the same beat that he had described to Al along with that bass line, and the rest was just finding a logical answer to the things that had jumped into my head. I knew I wanted it to have chords that would be inspiring to him; I knew I wanted it to be moody and have something that stuck with his character."

4. David Sanborn - Run For Cover (1985)

"I was probably 18 or 19 when I wrote ‘Run For Cover’. I remember I had just got a 4-track, reel-to-reel tape recorder and that was a big deal back then! I was excited to be able to overdub and make music on my own. I had this bass line and I programmed the beat on this little drum machine. My intention was to make an album for myself. Tom Browne had a record deal and had that song ‘Jamaica Funk’, Bernard Wright had a record deal...and Donald Blackman...so I figured I should make a record myself. I wrote ‘Run For Cover’ as one of the songs I was going to have on my album, but I wrote four others too. I remember asking David Sanborn to check it out. I gave him a tape and he called me back a day later and told me he wanted a track for his album! So I asked him which one. And he said, all of them!

American Jazz composer and bassist Marcus Miller performs live at Alcatraz in Milan, Italy, on 27 March 2018.

I was talking to a couple of cats that actually were advising me against jumping into the artist game at that point. I remember talking to Dr George Butler at Colombia Records, and saying to him, 'George, you know what, I want to make my own album.' He told me that he had been hearing on the grapevine I was getting ready to become the number one session bass player in New York and thought that I should get that experience first before jumping into the artist game. I actually took his advice, so thinking about that and thinking about David Sanborn’s offer, I decided to give the songs over to Dave and they became very successful for him, and it actually helped launch me into my producing career, so it ended up working out pretty well."

5. Stevie Wonder - Higher Ground (2007)

"All those Stevie Wonder songs are like classics to me. I have recorded five or six Stevie songs now and it’s like recording a George Gershwin tune or a song by Duke Ellington. ‘Higher Ground’ has got such a bad groove. I love it that Stevie wrote all those songs, with so much energy, in Eb, because he could really bang on the black keys of that clavinet."

“I wanted him to be very successful because he seemed pretty nervous”: Original Tool bassist Paul D’Amour recalls coaching Justin Chancellor to be his replacement – and giving him an in-depth lesson in his wild pedal protocol

“That embodies the attitude of shred, and if you don’t put that into your performance, it’s a sin”: Joe Satriani names the Neil Young solo that shreds – despite only featuring one note

Original show description below.

Among the greatest electric bassists in the history of the instrument, Marcus Miller is a jazz renaissance man. A two-time GRAMMY-winning producer, arranger, keyboardist, bass clarinetist, and film composer, he was instrumental to Miles Davis’ resurgence in the 1980s and a collaborator with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and McCoy Tyner to Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin, and Luther Vandross. He returns to the Miner stage for the first time in nearly five years, performing new music and material from across his staggering career.

A wildly prolific studio musician, Miller and his distinctive bass virtuosity have been heard on well over 500 sessions for a dizzying array of major artists, and as a bandleader, the Brooklyn native has found time to release 18 multifaceted albums, starting with his sparkling 1983 debut Suddenly . His soundtrack work spans decades, from 90s comedies including House Party , Eddie Murphy’s Boomerang , and Keenan Ivory Wayans’ A Low Down Dirty Shame to the Chris Rock television series Everybody Hates Chris and 2014’s About Last Night . In 2012, Miller was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace, working to promote their Slave Route Project that contributes to a better understanding of the causes and consequences of the global slave trade.

Among the greatest bassists in history, the double GRAMMY-winning composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist helped revitalize Miles Davis’ career and has worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, and Luther Vandross, among others.
