Located in the heart of Sichuan province, Chengdu is home to one of China's—and the world's—best-loved mammals: the giant panda. Apart from being the best place in China to see and interact with pandas, Chengdu is also a cultural melting pot. Influenced throughout its long history by Tibetan and Mongolian cultures, Chengdu's intriguing past has left its mark on the city's food and culture, and is evidenced in its many temples, fascinating archaeological sites and museums.
Things to Do and Travel Advice
There are several places visitors can go and see pandas while in Chengdu, but the most convenient and popular panda sanctuary is the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding , also known as Chengdu Panda Base. This base is just outside downtown Chengdu and covers an area of more than 90 acres designed to resemble the pandas' natural habitat. Most importantly, being a panda breeding center, Chengdu Panda Base houses pandas of all ages, including lots of adorable panda cubs.
About an hour and a half from Chengdu, Dujiangyan Panda Base is another panda sanctuary in the area. Dujiangyan Panda Base features fewer crowds and a volunteer program that allow visitors to feed and care for the pandas, as well as take a photo hugging a panda.
Pandas aren't the only giant resident of Sichuan. About a two hours' drive from downtown Chengdu lies the Leshan Giant Buddha , the largest stone Buddha statue on the planet. At a height of over 70 meters, this 1,000-year-old stone statue makes for an imposing figure and is another must-see for visitors to Chengdu.
Within the downtown area of Chengdu, Wenshu Temple deserves a visit for its beautiful, well-preserved architecture and tranquil garden. Kuaizhai Alley and Jinli Cultural Street are two interesting and historic pedestrian streets, where you can try some local Sichuan snacks, shop for souvenirs, and people watch. A little farther away from the city center, the fascinating Jinsha Site Museum offers history buffs an interesting glimpse into the exotic ancient Shu Kingdom that existed from 1200 BCE to 650 BCE in the Chengdu area.
Chengdu is known for its laid-back pace and tea culture, and there is no better way to experience Chengdu's relaxed way of life than by strolling through Renmin Park and drinking a cup of jasmine tea in one of its teahouses, while watching the local people chatting and having fun.
About a 1-hour flight north of Chengdu lie two of China's most stunning nature reserves: Jiuzhai Valley and Huanglong Valley . Both valleys are famous for their multi-colored mineral pools, alpine lakes, beautiful waterfalls, and breathtaking snow-capped mountains.
We usually recommend spending 2 to 3 days in Chengdu to cover the city's highlight attractions, including seeing giant pandas, the Leshan Giant Buddha, and some other attractions around the downtown area. If you want to visit Jiuzhai and/or Huanglong Valley from Chengdu, it normally requires 2 or 3 extra days due to the long distance and immense area of the parks. If you are planning a trip to Chengdu, please check out the popular sights and activities here and our most popular Chengdu itineraries here , or you can simply ask us to customize a China itinerary for you.
Tourist Map of Chengdu/Sichuan
Eating in Chengdu
With Sichuan cuisine being one of the eight main cuisines of China, food should play a role in any visit to Chengdu. In fact, in 2011, UNESCO declared Chengdu a "City of Gastronomy." Some notable dishes include Chengdu Hot Pot, Huiguorou (boiled and then stir-fried pork), Mapo tofu (tofu served in a spicy sauce containing pork, broad bean, and Sichuan peppercorns), Kung Pao Chicken (spicy diced chicken cooked with red pepper and peanuts), and Hongyou Chaoshou (Sichuan's take on the dumpling).
Jinli Cultural Street and Kuanzhai Alley are full of restaurants and food stalls, and thus are two good places for visitors to sample some of Chengdu's local dishes and snacks.
Popular Nighttime Activities in Chengdu
There are more teahouses in Chengdu than anywhere else in the world. With an estimated 10,000 teahouses, it is easy to think that there might be a teahouse on just about every corner. Joining the locals and sipping a cup of tea while watching a traditional Sichuan Opera face-changing show in one of Chengdu's traditional teahouses is a great way to soak up the local atmosphere and relax for a couple of hours after a day of sightseeing.
Jinli Cultural Street and Kuanzhai Alley are bustling and active in the evening, and there are lots of things to see and do here, whether it's trying some street food, bargaining some souvenirs, or just people watching. There are several bars along these streets where you can have drinks and enjoy some live music.
Best Time to Visit Chengdu
Weather in Chengdu is mild, humid, and cloudy; the city sees 250-300 overcast days a year! It is best to visit Chengdu in spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) to enjoy pleasant temperatures and clear weather. Avoid traveling to Chengdu from June to August, as it gets very hot and steamy, and sees a lot of rainfall in the summer. Winter (December to February) in Chengdu is humid and cold, and is thus not the most pleasant time for traveling.
Average Temperatures in Chengdu
Transportation
Located 16 km southwest of downtown, Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is the region's largest airport, with internal flights to/from all major cities in China as well as many international destinations. Flight time between Chengdu and Beijing , Guangzhou, or Shanghai is around 3 hours. You can also fly from Chengdu to the Tibetan capital of Lhasa in roughly 2.5 hours, and from Chengdu to Kunming in around 1.5 hours.
There are frequent bullet trains between Chengdu and Xi'an , which takes around four hours, thus making the bullet train the most convenient mode of transport between Xi'an and Chengdu. Bullet trains between Beijing/Shanghai and Chengdu take around ten hours, so it is usually more convenient to fly instead.

Chengdu Travel Guide
Capital city of Sichuan Province well-known as the land of abundance and panda's hometown.
Chengdu , the capital of Sichuan Province, located in the west plain in the Sichuan Basin, is a famous historic and highly cultural city with a history over 3,000 years. Known as the land of abundance, Chengdu boasts plentiful local products, a pleasant climate, a large number of scenic spots and historical sites, and fine traditional handicrafts well known both at home and abroad. Chengdu is a city with a population the size of New Zealand! Coffee culture is growing in Chengdu but not to the detriment of the amazing tea culture. Chengdu is known for its tea houses ! There are hundreds, maybe thousands. A good tea to get in Sichuan province is the locally produced jasmine bamboo leaf green tea from Mt Emei. Some great local delicacies include spicy chicken with peanuts (gongbao jiding), dry fried green beans (ganbian sijidou), mapo tofu, and boiled and stir fried pork with salty and hot sauce (huiguo rou). Kung pao chicken handmade sweets are called Dragon's whiskers. It is advised that you make enough time in Chengdu to visit the Giant Pandas and the Giant Buddha. The Pandas are amazingly cute and China’s national animal. The Panda research centre is most impressive. It holds the largest number of captive red pandas, and most possibly also Giant pandas. As well as the Leshan Buddha there is several beautiful temples, tombs, a fishing village, and a massive collection of different Buddhas. It’s also recommended to have a night at the Sichuan opera to watch the 'changing faces' Sichuan opera.

The Windhorse flag
Wind Horse, which is called Lung Ta in Tibetan, is the name of a particular kind of prayer flag, which are always seen on mountain tops, high passes, bridges, by the river side, on the family houses and monasteries in Tibet. Lung Ta is important to all Tibetans. The purpose of Lung Ta is to entreat the Wind Horse to intercede on our behalf, by petitioning Buddhist deities and protectors, to give us good fortune and to remove obstacles from our way. We pray for the well-being of all creatures and give thanks for our life by Lung Ta, and still hope you will be well and have a safe journey with us.

The Chengdu Panda Base is currently home to the largest number of giant pandas. Here, you could see pandas playing outdoors, eating bamboo, climbing trees, and even their babies!
If you would like a closer encounter with these creatures, we can arrange for you to participate in a one-day panda volunteer program, where you could make panda cakes, clean the glass of their enclosures, watch them being fed, and receive a volunteer certificate.
After visiting Leshan, you could also plan a one-day trip to Mount Emei if you have more time, and enjoy the beauty of the sub-tropical forest and waterfall. Check out our 5-Day Chengdu, Leshan, and Mount Emei Tour .
Chengdu in 2 Days (Essence of Chengdu)
For a two-day trip to Chengdu, you can dedicate one day to pandas and the other day to sightseeing in the city.
- Day 1: Arrive and go on a city sightseeing tour (such as a food tour, museums, and more)
- Day 2: Experience a panda volunteer program and depart
For the best panda experience, our panda volunteer program will allow you to observe pandas more closely and understand them better.
But if you only want to have a look at the pandas, we could make adjustments for you. All our tours are customized based on your interests and needs. Just contact us to create your Chengdu itinerary.
Chengdu in 1 Day (Time-Smart)
If you only have one day to spare in Chengdu and you're a big fan of pandas, we recommend spending an entire day participating in the panda volunteer program. Check out our 1-Day Dujiangyan Panda Volunteer Program Tour .
While If you want to enjoy other visits in Chengdu besides pandas, consider combining it with a visit to the Sanxingdui Museum or a food tour . Check out our 1-Day Pandas and Sanxingdui Museum Tour .
If you have time, we highly recommend taking a side trip from Chengdu to explore the many natural and cultural highlights in the surrounding areas – from unspoiled colorful pools to breathtaking valleys, snow-covered mountains, and off-the-beaten-path Tibetan villages.
1. Jiuzhaigou – Most Popular
Jiuzhaigou is the most popular choice for its quiet environment and unspoiled beautiful scenery. In the summer, it is also an excellent place to enjoy cool weather.
There, you could see colorful alpine lakes that change color throughout the day and year. Walk around the valleys to feel the fresh air and immerse yourself in harmony with streams, waterfalls, and mountain forests.
A trip to Jiuzhaigou will cost about three to five days from Chengdu. Here is a classic five-day itinerary from Chengdu that includes a panda experience:
- Day 1: Arrival in Chengdu and free exploration
- Days 2-4: Visit Jiuzhaigou and nearby Huanglong, a plateau wetland national reserve
- Day 5: Visit pandas at Dujiangyan Panda Base
For more options, check out these popular itineraries for Jiuzhaigou and Chengdu:
- 6-Day Essential Chengdu and In-Depth Jiuzhaigou Tour
- 3-Day Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong Highlights Tour
- 7-Day Chengdu, Buddha, Mount Emei, and Jiuzhaigou Tour
2. Daocheng Yading – Best for Autumn
Yading Nature Reserve in Daocheng offers breathtaking natural views, especially in autumn when the leaves turn golden, complemented by snow-capped mountains, crystal rivers, rolling meadows, and lakes.
There, you could also immerse yourself in the culture of Tibetan Buddhism. The scenery along the way from Chengdu to Daocheng is also spectacular. We will arrange a private car to escort you all the way, so you can enjoy the views at your own pace and in comfort.
It will take about five days for a trip to Yading:
- Day 1: Chengdu to Xinduqiao (gorges, mountains, and bridges)
- Day 2: Xinduqiao to Daocheng to Riwa (grasslands, mountains, and monasteries)
- Day 3: Riwa (snow mountains, lakes, and farms)
- Day 4: Daocheng (lakes, mountains, and old towns)
- Day 5: Departure
3. Holy Tibet
After enjoying Chengdu's leisurely pace of life, delicious food, and cute pandas, you can explore further west into Tibet for different cultures and plateau scenery.
Chengdu, on the east side of the Tibet Plateau, is the most surefire way to get into Tibet (especially for flights with more routes than anywhere else).
A trip to Tibet would take about four to eight days to visit its essential highlights. Here is an 8-day Tibet itinerary:
- Days 1-3: Arrival and Lhasa city highlights tour
- Days 4-5: Shigatse (visit Lake Yamdrok, glaciers, and visit a Tibetan family)
- Day 6: Mt. Everest Base Camp
- Day 7: Visit a canyon when driving back to Lhasa
- Day 8: Departure
4. Bipenggou – Best for Winter
If you want to find a natural ski resort with stunning winter views around Chengdu, Bipenggou Valley is an excellent choice.
There, you could enjoy the winter charm of plateau lakes, glaciers, and snow-capped mountains, ski on a less-crowded slope, and relax in a hot spring.
A trip to Chengdu and Bipenggou will take about five days:
- Days 1-2: Chengdu city tour (such as a Sichuan cooking experience, enjoying a Sichuan opera, visiting a tea house, and more).
- Day 3: Watch pandas at Dujiangyan Panda Base
- Day 4: Sightseeing in Bipenggou with a skiing experience
- Day 5: Visit some minority villages on your way back to Chengdu and departure
5. Northern Sichuan – Less Touristy
If you want to find an off-the-beaten-path route from Chengdu, consider going to Northern Sichuan. There's a lot of undiscovered beauty there.
You could find the source of the Yellow River and enjoy stunning sunsets when the glow is sprinkled on the ribbon-like bends of the Yellow River. Explore the homeland of Tibetan and Qiang people, and visit less touristy monasteries.
You may need about five days to explore the highlights of Northern Sichuan:
- Day 1: Chengdu to Songpan (visit Songpan ancient town)
- Day 2: Visit Ruoergai and Tangke (lakes, grasslands, and the Yellow River sunset)
- Days 3-4: Aba (monasteries, lamaseries, lakes, and peaks)
- Day 5: Visit a Tibetan village on your way back to Chengdu

Chengdu appoints national darling Panda Hua Hua honorary tourism chief
By Chen Chen
It's not hard to describe how famous giant panda Hua Hua is.
Visitors queue for up to three hours to catch a glimpse of her.
More than 1,000 visitors wait at the gate even before the facility opens at 7:30 a.m. to see her.
Perplexed by what he saw, a security guard at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, once asked Hua Hua's fans over a megaphone what was so special about her when the base has so many.

In fact, Hua Hua's star power has given the tourism industry in Chengdu such a boost that the base where she lives leaped to the second most popular tourist destination in the entire country during the Labor Day holiday last year.
The panda has become a symbol of Chengdu's tourism, and the city government made it official Wednesday by appointing the "big shot" an honorary chief of the city's tourism bureau.
The bureau posted a video on Chinese social media platform Douyin on Wednesday, announcing the news. The video features a picture of the 3-year-old bear "holding the appointment certificate" and an introduction to her resume.
A still from the base's video shows Hua Hua's head atop a cartoon body dressed in a suit and holding an "appointment certificate," declaring her an honorary chief of the tourism bureau of Chengdu City in southwest China's Sichuan Province. /CMG
The video sparked heated discussions in the comment section, with fans congratulating Hua Hua on the new job. "It's Chief Hua now," said one comment.
The decision was a direct response to the overwhelming online calls for the appointment, according to reports on Thursday, citing the bureau's staff.
The bureau hopes that the move will further uplift Chengdu's tourism industry.
Hua Hua has captivated the hearts of people in and out of China because of her cute appearance, mild temper and interactions with her devoted keeper, Tan Jintao or "Grandpa Tan."
She is shorter than her sister and other pandas her age and thus looks chubbier, which perhaps is a part of her charm. Some have compared her seated pose to an Onigiri or a triangular Japanese rice ball.

Unique traits
Due to developmental delays, her right leg lacks the strength to enable fast walking and tree climbing.
She is also different from other giant pandas because of her white fur, rather than the more common beige.
As a not particularly strong member of the animal, Hua Hua had a hard time keeping her bamboo from other hungry pandas. Fans say she gives up too easily and thus feel sympathetic toward the furred star.
Her keeper would "secretly" give her snacks while training her legs, creating many touching moments.

So, let's hope Hua Hua breaks a leg on the new job, but not the right leg!

Horticultural expo kicks off in chengdu.
The International Horticultural Exhibition 2024 Chengdu kicked off on Friday in Chengdu, Sichuan province, bringing the beauty and wonder of plants and flowers to millions.
Under the theme "park city, beautiful habitat", the expo will showcase a diverse range of plants, flowers and gardening styles from around the world in 113 gardens at the main venue in the Chengdu Eastern New Area, as well as in four sub-venues.
In a speech at the opening ceremony, Chinese Vice-President Han Zheng stressed the importance of countries strengthening dialogue and cooperation in the field of ecological civilization.
"The world is still facing global environmental issues such as climate change and biodiversity conservation, and achieving the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals remains a daunting task," he said.
He suggested that countries around the world should join hands and work together to map out the strategies for governance and responses, improve the environmental governance system, and explore and develop solutions for sustainable development.
Han said China will work with all parties to uphold a vision of global governance featuring shared growth through discussion and collaboration. "I hope the green development philosophy promoted by Expo 2024 Chengdu will serve as a motivation for us to create a better future," he said.
Leonardo Capitanio, president of the International Association of Horticultural Producers, said at the opening ceremony that the expo will highlight the importance of green city, ecological development and the role of plants in redefining livable cities.
"Visitors to the expo will see for themselves why plants matter as they immerse themselves in the horticultural wonders from all over the world," he said.
"We live in a world that is facing many challenges, not least the battle against climate change. AIPH firmly believes that horticulture will play an increasingly important role in enabling cities to adapt to changing climates, as well as improving the health and well-being of citizens," he said.
Capitanio said the Chengdu expo is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and he strongly urged everyone to go to Chengdu and see for themselves.
Wang Fengchao, mayor of Chengdu, said the city is fully geared to present a high-quality horticultural celebration with "features of the times, international standards, elements of China and characteristics of Chengdu".
Adhering to the philosophy of "green and low-carbon, economical and sustainable, shared and inclusive", the event will promote exchanges among gardens from 32 countries and regions of the five continents and gardens from the south of the Yangtze River, northern China and Sichuan, contributing to the building of a beautiful planet Earth and a human community with a shared future, he said.
Wang said the main venue has retained 80 percent of the original landscape and over 100 native plants, while the four sub-venues feature Sichuan-style bonsai, the flower industry, modern agronomy and biodiversity conservation.
During the 186-day event, more than 2,000 all-age-friendly activities will be carried out to enhance visitor engagement, he said. The expo is expected to attract 5 million visitors from China and overseas.
