Billboard Explains: Women in Reggaetón

“Mi gente… I cannot believe I get to finally announce MI CASA, TU CASA, my first ever headlining tour!!!” the Latin pop star wrote on Instagram on Tuesday (May 9). “I’ve been dreaming of this moment my entire career…I can’t wait to sing & dance with you guys, los quiero mucho mucho mucho y nos vemos pronto!”

The 16-date tour will run through the early fall, starting with a show Sept. 14 at Roadrunner in Boston followed by stops in New York City, Atlanta, Orlando and more. At the tail end of the month, Becky will spend consecutive nights across Texas by performing in Sugar Land, Grand Prairie, San Antonio and McAllen before playing El Paso’s Abraham Chavez Theatre. After three dates through Southern California, the tour then caps off Oct. 14 at the Arizona State Fair in Phoenix.

Becky is currently riding high with “Chanel,” her latest top 10 hit with collaborator Peso Pluma on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. In April, the duo debuted the track live for the first time during her Coachella set, which also included a surprise appearance by Natti Natasha, and later performed the song together at the 2023 Latin AMAs.

Becky G Plots First-Ever Headlining U.S. Tour: ‘Can’t Believe It’s Finally Happening’

Welcome to Casa Gomez! On Tuesday, Becky G announced that for the very first time in her career, she’ll be heading out on her very own tour across the U.S. later this year.

Dubbed the “Mi Casa, Tu Casa” tour, Becky G will perform in sixteen cities, starting in Boston on Sept. 14 in time for Latinx Heritage Month, before it heads to cities including Orlando, San Antonio, El Paso, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.

“I’m so excited to go out on the road for my first ever headlining tour and to see all my beautiful fans and supporters across the country in these intimate settings,” Becky said in a statement. “It’s going to be so special and I can’t wait for everyone to see what we have planned!”

The big tour news comes several weeks after Becky G performed on the Coachella mainstage, bringing out fellow Mexicanos like Peso Pluma, Marca, MP, and Fuerza Régida for a show she described as a moment of “ rebirth ” for her career.

The tour marks Becky’s first headlining string of shows in the United States. She went on a Latin American and European tour in 2019, but had yet to do the same in the States. Her last time on the road in North America was on outings with Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull in 2017, J Balvin in 2015, and for Katy Perry and Demi Lovato in 2014.

“I can’t believe it’s finally happening,” teased Becky on her Twitter the day prior.

Multi-platinum, award-winning singer, songwriter, actress and activist Becky G was born for the spotlight and her multifaceted career has proven Becky to be one of the most influential artists of her generation. Becky will kick off her first US headlining tour ‘Mi Casa, Tu Casa Tour’ on 14 September in Boston, visiting more than a dozen cities across the country. She is also set to release a new Regional Mexican album later this year, which will celebrate her Mexican-American heritage.

Becky, you are embarking on your first US headlining tour. How exciting is going on tour around US? What are you most excited about for this tour?

I have had the honor of going on the road opening for numerous artists throughout my career, but this being my own tour makes it so special. I’m excited to wake up in new cities and try new foods. I can’t wait for my fans to get the ‘Casa Gomez’ experience. This tour is more than just about me, it’s about my fans and my roots. 

You are also about to release your new Regional Mexican album, which will celebrate your heritage. What can we expect to hear on this album? What inspired you to produce it?

It is inspired by my experience as a 200 percenter, 100 % American and 100 % Mexican. It represents a girl who is proud to be from LA and also so proud of her Mexican heritage. 

Even though you have Mexican-American heritage, you live in the US. How natural was it for you to explore your career as a Latin musician?

Los Angeles used to be Mexico, all of California used to be Mexico, indigenous Mexico to be more specific. We’re so close to the border, literal neighbors, so our culture is embedded in many esquinas around LA. I grew up speaking Spanglish. While my grandparents played a huge part in our daily practices and traditions, they inspired my taste in music, so exploring a career as a Latin musician came naturally. It’s an honor to know that my heritage inspires and is a major part of my career.  

Who are your biggest musical influences of all time?

I’d say that artists like Selena Quintanilla really paved the way and inspired me. 

How would you describe yourself as a musician and your development as an artist?

I like to consider myself a genre-less artist. I create from a free place with no boundaries. No matter the language or sonics, if it feels good to me, I do it. That has taught me so much and allowed me to grow exponentially as an artist. Exploring and experimenting with new sounds has been an important part of my craft from a very young age. 

In April, you made your Coachella debut, with the critis praising your performance above and beyond. How did it feel, being on stage of one of the biggest festivals in the world?

A stage like Coachella is a massive global platform that goes beyond just the festival goers. Truthfully speaking, that pressure only fueled my desire to give the best of me. Being on that stage felt right. It’s a moment I will carry with me forever. I had so much fun and don’t think I’ve ever prepared for something as intensely and intentionally as I did for this Coachella debut on the main stage. Plus, there is more and more Latin representation on the line-ups and to be a part of that made me proud. 

This year, you received the Billboard Women in Music Impact Award for using your music and platform to create positive social change while advocating on behalf of women both in and beyond the music industry. Why is this such an important thing to you? How do you advocate for women from all over the world?

This honor came to me the day before my birthday in my hometown of Inglewood. It felt like such a full circle moment. Being surrounded by so many incredible women and having my mom and siblings there meant the world. I think sharing my platform for any awareness and opportunity to move the needle even in the slightest bit to help and inspire other women is an honor. I think it starts with us. Sometimes it’s that simple.

You are truly passionate about your community and use your platforms to speak out against inequality and raise awareness on social issues. What fuels you up the most about these social issues we’re able to witness each and every day?

I think a great place to start always is to educate yourself when you can on issues that mean something to you and your community. It is with understanding that allows us to confront these issues with solutions and compassion. 

Recently, you also announced a collaboration with Erewhon Market on an exclusive beverage ‘Becky G’s Swirl-Chata’, which takes traditional horchata and blends it with housemade cinnamon-infused rice milk, hydrating electrolytes, skin-supporting collagen and Becky’s Superfood Caramel. Tell us more about how this collaboration happened and what inspired ‘Becky’s Swirl-Chata’.

This is a great example of how I wanted to use my platform in a way that may be new for our community, yet was still expansive and intentional. Erewhon was super open and collaborative to my suggestions on inspiration, adding ingredients from brands owned by POC. Additionally, adding in the give back of proceeds from our smoothie to foundations that need the help and support. I love my culture so much and to bring an Horchata-inspired drink to Erewhon was so exciting.

Here’s Who Is Opening Becky G’s First Headlining Tour

Becky G’s first-ever headlining tour is well underway – but there are more surprises. Following their first Latin Grammy nomination , it was revealed that the sierreño trio Conexión Divina is joining the Mexican-American singer for the remainder of her highly-anticipated tour as the opening act.

Becky’s newly revealed opening act will perform starting tonight (Sept. 27) at the Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land, TX. The girls will follow the Mi Casa, Tu Casa tour to cities like El Paso, TX; San Diego, CA; Los Angeles, CA; San Jose, CA; and Phoenix, AZ, to name a few stops. Conexión Divina’s música mexicana is the icing on Becky’s new tour showcasing her Mexican roots. Moreover, tonight’s show will mark the debut of their newest member. Dani is Ashlee Valenzuela’s replacement following her recent departure from the group . 

Besides this new tour, Conexión Divina has been leaving their mark in the music industry all year long. Earlier this month, they were part of the first-ever Arre Festival (Sept. 9), which included huge regional Mexican names like Peso Pluma and Natanael Cano. The trio also released their debut album Tres Mundos in April; and was one of the few regional Mexican artists to perform at the Coachella music festival.

Becky G Relies on KLANG for New Tour

Becky G ’s list of achievements thus far include four Latin Grammy Award nominations, four number-one hits on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Charts, and her debut album Mala Santa was certified 8X platinum. Her first solo headlining tour would be a big deal. Mi Casa, Tu Casa covered 16 cities, starting in Boston on September 14th and hit Orlando, San Antonio, El Paso, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and more. It was a big show, with a band, a DJ, and numerous guest artists. Monitoring on the 64-input stage would be a challenge, one that the KLANG:fabrik immersive in-ear monitoring solution handled superlatively, night after night.

Monitor engineer Lucas Pinzón describes it as “a theater tour, but easily adaptable to arenas, that travels with a lot of scenery. In each show, Becky’s childhood ‘house’ is recreated, with musicians distributed among stairs, hallways, flowers, and second floors.”

It took 64 input channels to accommodate that very full “house” that included a drummer with a set of acoustic drums and an SPD machine, along with a bassist with an electric bass and Moog keyboard, a guitarist with electric and acoustic guitars, and a loquacious DJ with two stereo units. In addition, there were 18 channels of tracks operated by a separate playback technician. Then came the guest artists including sierreño trio Conexión Divina and six musicians who formed a “regional music section” with guitar, requinto, bass tololoche, two trumpets, a trombone, and a tuba who both opened for and backed Becky G during her show, underscoring her Mexican musical roots.

To manage all of this, Pinzón set up 13 stereo IEM mixes, plus one additional for guests, all using Shure PSM 1000 IEMs. The KLANG:fabrik was loaded onto his LV1 console, which matched another LV1 out at FOH, mixed on by Ramon Pabon . Pinzón’s monitor console featured the KLANG:fabrik system, integrated into the SoundGrid network through an MGB with MADI ports.

Pinzón, whose past live-sound mixing includes work with Maluma , Carlos Vives , and Bomba Estéreo , says that the idea of using the KLANG:fabrik came about at the suggestion of Production Manager Gabriel Gil, also a sound engineer. “After a recent guest appearance on Karol G’s tour, Becky was delighted with the sound and wanted to integrate it into her own setup,” he says. “It was amazing for me to have the freedom to build a mix to my liking and for it to be so well received by the artist. After 20 shows, Becky never wanted to make any additional changes to what we had built in rehearsals with Gabriel. Since it was the first tour using the system, we decided to use KLANG only for Becky and the guests. The result was spectacular! Guests who didn’t have a soundcheck and arrived for the show had a copy of the positions and levels used in Becky’s mix. After using it, they were happy and satisfied with their mix on stage. However, after this tour and the success we had with the KLANG system, there are plans to upgrade to a DiGiCo Orange box and integrate more mixes into this system through a DMI-KLANG card.”

Operationally, Pinzón says that the KLANG experience offered him as the monitor mixer numerous advantages. “For instance, having clearer positions in your mix means you don’t need as much level in your bodypack, which obviously helps with auditory fatigue and the overall health of our ears—something we must be conscious of in this industry,” he says.

“One thing that we all appreciated every night was that I used two ambient microphones on stage left and stage right for Becky’s mix. She interacts a lot with the audience during her show, actively listening to them, inviting them on stage, and sharing moments with them. Depending on the moment of the show and the interaction she was having, I would change the position of the ambient microphones—sometimes to the sides, sometimes behind—or I would place them forward and louder in the mix between songs and interludes. This allowed her to jokingly say during the show, ‘I’m so happy to see you up close and hear you too, so you can’t talk bad about me!’ Everyone would laugh night after night. The immersive KLANG system enabled her to be able to locate the microphones and gave her the confidence to know where that person who was speaking, so she could point at them and say, ‘I love you too!’

“Also, having the ability to control both KLANG and the LV1 through touchscreens gave me the freedom to navigate the system quickly and solve any needs more efficiently than with a mouse. In an era where audio is closely tied to touchscreen interfaces, having KLANG in this way makes it very easy to locate positions, adjust volumes, assign channels, and manage names, among other things.”

Mi Casa, Tu Casa was a big production but it never let that get in the way of Becky G’s own intimate energy and passion. KLANG:fabrik made managing the sound on that frenetic stage predictable. “When I was called to be part of this project, I had never worked with this system before and didn’t know what to expect,” says Pinzón. “And I couldn’t be happier with the result. I want to have a unit with me in my own setup for the future.”

Becky G Headlining Her First-Ever US Tour Is a Significant Move for Women in Latin Music

Weeks following her popular Coachella performance, Becky G has announced that she'll finally be headlining her very own US tour — for the very first time in her career. Her "Mi Casa, Tu Casa Tour" kicks off in September with 16 dates and stops in several cities including Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Orlando, San Antonio, and more, officially wrapping on Oct. 14 in Phoenix, AZ.

" [The] 'Mi Casa, Tu Casa" Tour is about inviting people into an intimate experience with me. My intention is for it to be a place where we can sing, dance, laugh, and cry, all in the comfort of our shared space," Becky G told Variety. "I've never headlined my own tour before, so I really want it to feel personal and connect with my fans in that way, because we'll build nuestra casa [our home] in every city, together."

The Mexican-American artist went on a Latin American and European tour in 2019 but considering how far the 26-year-old has gotten in her music career, it's surprising that it's taken this long for her to finally headline her own US tour. Becky G has put out a number of hits including her "Bailé Con Mi Ex" single that helped her land her first No.1 as a solo artist on Billboard's Latin Airplay chart . Last year, she earned her first No.1 on Billboard's Latin Pop Albums chart with the 14-track "Esquemas." She has made a number of appearances at music festivals and award shows and this April she made her Coachella solo debut . She's also taken home a few awards. Most recently, she was presented with the Impact Award at Billboard's Women in Music Awards .

It's only been in recent years that women in Latin urbano music have been given the space to headline their own tours across the US. In 2021, Karol G headlined her first US tour, titled the "Bichota Tour , "following her third studio album "KG0516." It included 21 dates and kicked off in Denver. These are major milestones to hit considering Latin urbano music is still a mostly, main-dominated genre. But Latinas in this space are finally getting the recognition that they deserve.

" I've always wanted to headline my own tour, and I truly feel there's no better time than now, " she says. "I'm so proud of the journey I've taken and the work I've put in as an artist that's gotten me here. Getting a chance to perform at Coachella was such a major milestone in my career, and while I prepared for that show, I knew it was also the perfect time to develop a tour so I could bring this vision and experience to others."

As she announces her US tour, Becky G has also been working on her highly anticipated album, which will be a fusion of Mexican regional — a genre that's been receiving a lot of mainstream popularity in recent years — and Mexican pop.

Original OVERKILL bassist D.D. Verni , who was forced to miss the band's Latin American tour while he was recovering from shoulder surgery, returned to the live stage on May 17 at the Milwaukee Metal Fest at The Rave/Eagles Club in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

For the Latin American tour, OVERKILL recruited former MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson as Verni 's temporary replacement.

In a recent interview with The Metal Podcast , Ellefson was full of praise for Verni , saying: " D.D. 's amazing, man. Look, I may be David Ellefson , but I ain't no D.D. Verni , man. I mean, that guy, he's a masterful songwriter. His arrangements are killer and his parts are very clever and cool. And so, yeah, it's got my thrash chops up and it's an honor to just step in and help them out."

Ellefson made his live debut with OVERKILL on April 11 at C3 Stage in Guadalajara, Mexico.

OVERKILL 's 10-date "Scorching Latin America 2024" tour wrapped on April 28 in São Paulo, Brazil.

The band is continuing to tour in support of its twentieth studio album, "Scorched" , which was released in April 2023 via Nuclear Blast Records .

"Scorched" offered a new recording environment for OVERKILL as all members were able to record on their own. The mixing of the record was handled by Colin Richardson and his assistant engineer Chris Clancy . Johnny Rodd helped with producing vocals, and finally, Maor Appelbaum took over mastering and adding finishing touches. The band returned to artist Travis Smith to create the album cover art.

Richardson previously worked with OVERKILL on 1997's "From The Underground And Below" , 2000's "Bloodletting" and 2003's "Killbox 13" albums.
