Why Cruise Indonesia?

Regally draped across the Equator like an ermine mantle, Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago, a majestic sprawl of some 17,500 paradisiacal islands home to all manner of endemic wildlife and natural wonders. Dramatic volcanic landscapes submerge into sapphire blue surf, crystalline seas home to graceful whale sharks and nomadic sea-gypsies, filled with vibrant coral reefs fostering marine habitats of untold biodiversity. This alluring archipelago, once the inspiration for Wallace’s theory of natural selection, is now a sublime playground for Indonesia cruise trips and increasingly popular private yacht charters .

Set sail on one of our luxury small ship cruises in Indonesia , from traditional Pinisi schooners to superior scuba diving liveaboards and even oceangoing super-yachts, and visit some of the planet’s most pristine, remote and beautiful areas. Visit breathtaking Bali and the pink sands of the Komodo National Park – the habitat of the legendary Komodo Dragon – or follow the historic trade winds en route to the famous Spice Islands . Discover the glittering jewels of the ‘ Coral Triangle ‘ – the islands of Wayag in Raja Ampat and resplendent birds-of-paradise of West Papua – or venture deep into the jungle-fringed rivers of Indonesian Borneo to glimpse orangutans in the wild aboard a traditional Kalimantan riverboat.

Our hand-picked portfolio of Indonesian boats has been carefully chosen to include remarkable expedition vessels operated by only the most trusted of partners, preeminent pioneers in the region who offer exceptional itineraries, unrivaled knowledge and utmost levels of service.

Hindu Bali is notable as the only island of an otherwise Muslim Indonesia. That means that pork is served, and Babi Guling — whole roasted pig, Balinese-style — is the traditional preparation. But other great eats aren't far away, either. Try satay, grilled meat skewered and served with an accompanying sauce: Seafood versions like prawns are popular here. Vegetarians can enjoy tofu dishes or sayur mesanten , veggies braised in coconut milk.

The Lay of the Land

At nearly 750,000 square miles, Indonesia is the world’s largest island country and the seventh largest by combined sea-and-land area.

Unless you have unlimited time, you simply cannot sail/see it all in one cruise itinerary. Thus, understanding the regions and knowing what you want out of your travel experience and ship are paramount.

Cruising Indonesia for Wildlife

While wildlife encounters can never be guaranteed, seeking out endemic creatures is half the fun. In Indonesia, you can set your sights on Komodo dragons, birds-of-paradise, whale sharks and manta rays, among other exciting animals, but there are geographical nuances to consider.

Komodo and Rinca Islands are the islands to visit if you are keen to see Komodo dragons. Snorkeling near Flores Island will offer you the best chance to see manta rays and sea turtles in deep currents, and some Raja Ampat routes hone in on the best chances to spot birds-of-paradise. Learn more in our guide to the regions below.

“Our Indonesia small ship cruises focus on activity, wildlife & exploring remote islands.”

Lesser Sunda Islands: Flores, Komodo & Bali Cruises

The most popular cruise itineraries are located in the Lesser Sunda Islands, perhaps due to the international airport on Bali and the island being a household name in travel thanks to its many established resorts. From west to east, the Lesser Sunda Islands comprise Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba, Timor, the Alor archipelago, the Barat Daya Islands and the Tanimbar Islands, with the most common expedition cruise routes sailing regularly between Bali and Flores.

Each of these islands are different in their own right with myriad earthy highlights including volcanoes, rainforests, waterfalls, mangroves, white-sand beaches and even savannah. This diverse landscape also holds a variety of wildlife that includes Komodo dragons (Rinca & Komodo Islands) and manta rays in the deep channels that separate the Indian Ocean from the Pacific. Traditional lifestyles, quiet coastal villages, tribal rituals and intriguing ancestral traditions are also a major draw for travelers to the Lesser Sundas.

Raja Ampat Cruises

For travelers looking for an immersive experience into the natural world of Indonesia, a cruise through the archipelago of Raja Ampat is the ideal modality. Located right in the heart of the Coral Triangle, this biodiverse area contains 450 species of reef-building coral, 1,400 species of fish and intriguing endemic sea life—the stingless jellyfish of the brackish interior lakes being the perfect example.

This kaleidoscopic underworld is ideal for the avid diver or snorkeler and pairs nicely with the stunning karst islands and unique bird life, including striking birds-of-paradise. The island biogeography of these birds helped Alfred Russel Wallace formulate his theories of speciation, much like the finches of the Galapagos did for Charles Darwin.

Additionally, voyages in Raja Ampat offer adventures hiking, exploring caves and inner-island jungle walks to stunning waterfalls.

While West Papua is technically the only territory of Indonesia, the island of New Guinea is often an itinerary stop or embarkation point for many Indonesia cruises. Many Raja Ampat cruises begin their journey in West Papua out of Sorong.

Like its neighbor Raja Ampat, New Guinea is a hotspot for birds-of-paradise, but even more so as all but two genera are found here. At their core though, trips to New Guinea are truly cultural, offering a look into a world that very few outsiders see.

West Papua and Papua New Guinea cruises highlight remote villages, traditional art and authentic rituals providing human connection with peoples that are living a very similar life to their grandparents, quite the feat for the twenty-first century. Papua New Guinea is also home to stimulating World War II history and is dotted with historic places of interest, monuments and tributes honoring the fallen. The colorful biodiversity of the underwater world delivers the perfect balance to days filled with culture and history.

Spice Islands Cruises

Indonesian Spice Islands cruises offer a unique historic experience and deep cultural interactions among beautiful islands. The Spice Islands were mapped on ancient trade routes long before the Europeans even began searching out the Islands’ nutmeg, cloves, mace and pepper. The Portuguese, the first Europeans to start trading spices on a large scale from the Spice Islands in 1598, cornered the market for almost 80 years, infusing the area with Portuguese culture.

The clashes between the varying nations and cultures in the region for centuries offers a fascinating historic journey that can capture any traveler’s imagination. Remnants of this highly utilized trade route are still seen today on Spice Island cruise itineraries that also can include snorkeling with whale sharks; exploring lush national parks; visits to traditional villages, colonial forts and palaces; and ideal snorkeling, diving and underwater adventures.

Various local spices set out in bowls at a market in Indonesia.

Sulawesi Cruises & Kalimantan (Borneo)

Sulawesi, the Indonesian island east of Kalimantan (Borneo) and west of Raja Ampat, is perhaps the most unknown gem of the country’s many islands. Its shorelines and atolls are freckled with human settlements that rarely see tourism, so this is a land of true adventure travel and modern cultural experiences. Villages here are authentic working/living places for a variety of locals who make their living farming and fishing. This includes the nomadic Bajau people, commonly called the sea gypsies.

The unique shape of the island into several long peninsulas offers coral reefs alongside varied coastal geography ranging from steep mountains to palm-lined beaches. The Togean Islands offer chances to swim with stingless jellyfish, and keen eyes should look for tarsiers and macaques. Sulawesi is also home to the Bugis, Indonesia’s famed shipbuilders, so your itinerary may include seeing giant wooden vessels being built on the beach.

If orangutans are on your bucket list, be sure to look for Sulawesi cruise itineraries that include stops in Borneo. Several of our trips include stops or pre-cruise trip extensions here.

A Note About the Wallace Line

Indonesia is famous for the Wallace Line, a faunal boundary separating two eco-zones (Asia and Wallacea, the transitional zone between Asia and Australia). The “line” was drawn by naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace in 1859 and runs between Borneo and Sulawesi down to the strait between Bali and Lombok. Traveling around this line is a thrill for naturalists as it’s one of the most distinctive biogeographic areas on Earth. West of the line you will find larger terrestrial mammals (tigers, elephants, orangutans), and east of the line look for marsupials, Australian cockatoos and birds-of-paradise. The Indonesian island of Sulawesi is an interesting exception to the Wallace Line with black macaques, pigs and tarsiers.

Java & Sumatra Cruises

Most itineraries explore Indonesia from points north and east of Bali. However, select itineraries will cruise along the western Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra, linking up with Singapore. While Java is home to a majority of the Indonesian population, small ship cruises here will opt to mostly visit uninhabited offshore isles and small villages. In this region travelers can explore unspoiled coral reefs, deserted black- and white-sand beaches, lush jungle and child volcanoes of the famous Krakatoa.

The Places in Between: “Positioning” Indonesia Cruises

A fun way to see Indonesia is to “position,” or cruise with the boat as it sails between these iconic regions. These trips are often longer in length and include more days at sea (sailing vs. venturing off the ship) but connect you to the unseen places of Indonesia and allow you to relax with the rhythm of the ocean. Positioning cruises are also excellent choices to add on to a voyage. For example, a three-week positioning itinerary could be to sail south from Sulawesi to Flores, then stay on the ship all the way west to Bali!

Year-Round Indonesia Cruising

Indonesia cruises are available every month of the year, but ships often follow the trade winds and weather patterns to sail certain locations during their drier, less-windy months. If you are seeking to visit Raja Ampat, for example, plan your trip in the winter months (roughly, October through February). If your course is set on a Bali cruise, you can look for most sailings running from March through September. Climate data listed above is from Denpasar, Bali.

Small Ships & Yachts Sailing Indonesia

Numerous small ships of varying sizes and styles sail Indonesia, and our variety hold anywhere from 14 to 120 guests. You can certainly go the way of day boats to cruise Indonesia, but selecting a first-class, seaworthy and safe vessel is of the utmost importance among these far-flung island chains. Thus, we highly recommend going beyond the day-tour circuit to more remote reaches via expedition ships. In Indonesia, our partner vessels range from classic wooden Indonesian sailing vessels that lend an authentic, romantic cruise vibe to scuba-equipped luxury yachts and exploration-focused, state-of-the-art expedition vessels that travel farther, faster with all the latest gear. Knowing your preference for ship style, activities and amenities will help narrow down your cruise choices.

The 24-guest sailing vessel Ombak Putih combines traditional and modern design to bring authenticity and comfort to her itineraries in the Ring of Fire region stretching from Bali to the Philippines.

The 120-guest Coral Adventurer Australian expedition ship offers a wine cellar, open galley, private balconies and efficient ship-to-shore operations.

The Aqua Blu carries her 30 guests in high luxury, comfort and safety while sailing through Eastern Indonesia. Embrace history and luxury on this unique cruise ship.

Katharina is a 12-guest sailing vessel whose adventures explore the Ring of Fire, the string of volcanic islands that stretch out from Bali east to the Philippines.

What Travelers Say About Their Indonesia Cruise

Fantastic boat with an amazing crew. What a great adventure exploring the small islands of Indonesia. The snorkeling was the best I've experienced anywhere in the world.

The quality of the guide, the crew and the ship were far above our expectations. The itinerary was very enjoyable. The early trip to Komodo island was very rewarding and the timing and variety of snorkeling was excellent.

The trip overall was unforgettable. One of the best parts was not having to figure out every step of the trip after/during planning a wedding. Knowing that AdventureSmith was in charge of the major details and 10 days of our trip, as well as internal flights were all organized was an important load-lifted off our shoulders.

Great guides together with the very enthusiastic and helpful crew made it a great voyage. If you like small boat cruising and snorkeling, this is the trip for you with the unique Komodo Dragons as a special plus.

We went to untouched places that we didn't know existed in Indonesia. We were able to still see all the hot spots in Bali on our own before we took this cruise, but this offered something entirely different than any of our friends had ever experienced in Indonesia.

Overall trip was amazing. Absolutely no issues logistically. Unless you have months on your hands to stumble around foreign countries and really figure it out on your own, a quality specified travel agency like Adventuresmith is absolutely necessary for a trip of this caliber.

Fantastic boat with an amazing crew. What a great adventure exploring the small islands of Indonesia. We most enjoyed Rinca to see Komodo dragons! The snorkeling was the best I've experienced anywhere in the world.

Great food and great crew!

Traveler Advice

Sea was a bit choppy the first couple of days, but not much you can do about that!

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

They helped us organize all our flights.  Even reached out to check in on us when there was an airport closure due to volcanic activity.

The quality of the guide, the crew and the ship were far above our expectations. The itinerary was very enjoyable. The early trip to Komodo island was very rewarding and the timing and variety of snorkeling was excellent. Also really enjoyed the trip to the active volcano and exploring the local shipbuilding village there. The trip to Rinca was short, I thought we could have been given the option to spend some more time there.

Accommodations Review

The ship was beautiful and kept in excellent shape by the crew. A memorable experience to sail on Katharina. My only complaint was that the sails were not able to be put up.

The chef on Katharina was INCREDIBLE. Loved the food and the variety. Rotation of meals over the week was also highly enjoyable.

Crew & Guides Review

Ari far exceeded our expectations. He knew so much about the local culture, the history of the area, the boat and the wildlife given his more than 20 years of experience. He also made sure that we had the best guides wherever we went. In addition, he was professional, friendly, approachable and organized.

We had excellent communication with our AdventureSmith contact Nick. He answered all of our questions in a timely fashion and we were well prepared for the trip.

We had an excellent trip aboard the Ombak Putih for our honeymoon. One of the best parts was not having to figure out every step of the trip after/during planning a wedding. Knowing that AdventureSmith was in charge of the major details and 10 days of our trip, as well as internal flights were all organized was an important load-lifted off our shoulders. The trip overall was unforgettable. Misool was beautiful- loved the jellyfish lake and cave exploration. The snorkeling, beach and view of Wayag was just idyllic and my favorite place of the trip. The oyster farm we visited was neat but the bay we stayed in wasn't the best- filled with plastic and felt less remote and beautiful with the oyster farm surrounding us. Loved getting to know the knowledgeable, like-minded travelers aboard. One of the best parts of the trip! This trip had a lot of snorkeling, which was great, but could have had a little more variety in activities. I know this was the action and adventure departure, but it was unclear that that just meant more snorkeling.

The Ombak Putih is a rad ship! We felt like we were pirates exploring the islands. I also feel that the traditional pinisi boats (as there were a few around) just fit right into the landscape, whereas the more yachty or modern boats seemed out of place.

Lots of variety. Loved the lemongrass flavorings. Could have more Indonesian foods, felt odd seeing a lot of red meat, cheese and smoked salmon when we can tell these items had to travel far to get there.

Great people. Fun to be around. Could fine tune their presentations and become stronger speakers for the evening presentations, but did a great job making everything run smoothly and keep us occupied.

Transportation Review

Our internal flights were arranged for us, as well as transfers to and from the ship which made our Indonesia domestic travel flawless.

The packing lists, online forms and the arrangements made were all excellent and timely. My friends and family would love to experience the magic of small ship travel that AdventureSmith offers.

If you get cold in the water bring a wet-suit top at least. The water is warm, but for us who tend to be cold just a little extra layer can make it so much more enjoyable. Also some people had long, thin rash-guard pants which were great protection against the annoying sea lice and jellyfish that we would encounter.

  • Ombak Putih

Great guide together with the very enthusiastic and helpful crew made it a great voyage. The snorkeling was excellent; many fishes together with turtles, rays and manta rays. [We also enjoyed] seeing the Komodo dragons. The fellow travelers were a very nice diverse group who mixed well.

Cabins were small but quite adequate. Food was very good and the bar prices very reasonable.

The food was delicious and there was always a choice of fish, meat and non meat dishes.

Ari made the trip a great success. Very knowledgeable and experienced. Organized everything extremely well.

If you like small boat cruising and snorkeling, this is the trip for you with the unique Komodo Dragons as a special plus.

What a trip and amazing ship! It was a special way to see Indonesia. We went to untouched places that we didn't know existed in Indonesia. Lots of snorkeling. Visited so many remote villages and had the children hold our hands as they took us around their town. We were able to still see all the hot spots in Bali on our own before we took this cruise, but this offered something entirely different than any of our friends had ever experienced in Indonesia and we feel like we really saw a "real" view of the country.

The Ombak Putih is a special ship. We were in awe of all the beautiful wooden touches - rare to find in the modern ships of today! Stairs are on the steeper side on the ship, so we made good use of the railings when at sea.

We ate like kings. Lots of healthy options, salads and fresh fish, but many treats and temptations to overeat too. A bit too many fried options for my taste, but others on board enjoyed and much was authentic to Indonesia - lots fried banana for snacks! 24/7 coffee and tea much appreciated and honor system tracking to grab your own drinks aboard and pay for at the end.

The crew was friendly and helpful, always with a smoothie ready when we came back on board in the heat of the day. We loved our guides Arie and Kees, who provided the perfect combination of education and adventure with their lectures and their snorkeling skills.

We would never have found this ship, or chosen this unique route, if it wasn't for AdventureSmith's advice and recommendation! Happy to have them as our sounding board for how to access the world's remote locations by small ship (we've done 3 trips). Their recommendations for us have always been spot on.

If you like to drink, take advantage of the opportunity to bring your own booze aboard to make your own cocktails! Bring a short wet suit or heavier rash guard top and tights as the water was on the cold side in certain locations.

  • Sailing Indonesia: The Undiscovered Frontier

Overall trip was amazing. Absolutely no issues logistically. We had a couple of days in Bali on our own prior to boarding the ship which made it easier to adapt to the weather, time change etc. SUP-ing into isolated islands with no one else around. Visiting remote villages that hadn’t seen any tourists since the last time our boat was there a year  ago. The genuine excitement of the kids wanting to show us around there village and home. The uniqueness of this trip was what really made the experience. It is a true adventure, there are no guarantees. Every day the group is coming up with plans based on weather, sea conditions, time frames, local advice and recommendations etc. You must be flexible and able to coordinate with the group, but this is what made it so fun. Of course the guides and the Captain had the final say. You could do this trip multiple times and never have the same experience (which some people on board had). There is a rough itinerary, but there are so many cool options and dynamic environment that it could easily change. Marine life, snorkeling, birds and komodo dragons. Truly Epic. Some people commented on a little too much time at sea. I enjoy boats and moving around but I would agree that it seemed a little hurried in 10-12 days to do the route we did. A few more days would allow for some flexibility and spending time at the more desirable locations, especially if we encountered inclement weather. [ AdventureSmith note that the itinerary was extended to 14 days in duration after this traveler's trip. ] We had a good group, however group dynamics on a small boat can play a role in activities. I personally would have liked a few more adventurous off boat excursions, however we did stay busy with fun activities daily.  No bad experiences.

The ship (Ombak Putih) was a beautiful, traditional, completely dialed Indonesian sailing vessel. The quarters below were not huge, but very clean, comfortable and as beautiful as the rest of the ship. Just the amount of hard work that went into this boat was breathtaking. We were lucky to have a small group (9), so there was plenty of deck space around to relax and not feel cramped. Even though this boat was equipped to sail if need be, we motored 99% of the time. We sailed 1 afternoon for fun, but there was no way we were going to cover the ground (almost 1000 miles) sailing the whole time.  Motor noise/exhaust was no issue at any time, night or day.

I couldn’t even think of anything I would change food wise. Amazing. Every stop we made, or local fisherman we saw, fresh fish and local goods were acquired. No food illness, water was processed on the boat etc. Beer was very reasonably priced. Cheaper than Mexico.

Unless you have months on your hands to stumble around foreign countries and really figure it out on your own, a quality specified travel agency like Adventuresmith is absolutely necessary for a trip of this caliber. Having firsthand knowledge of the ins and outs of small ship/remote world travel you’re in good hands. All connections and logistics where handled and everything operated smoothly. No problems.  Having spent so much of my life on the ocean, I love boats, marine life and accessing coastlines via a small boat or ship.  To me it really is the best way to travel. Whether you tie up in a large bustling port city, or anchor off a remote beach, it’s a whole different perspective than land travel. I look forward to another amazing boat trip with Adventuresmith in the future.

Ari was our main guide. He was exceptional. An Indonesian and Sulawesi local. Though we had people from all over the world on the boat, English was primarily spoken and Ari was absolutely fluent. No missed communications, or misunderstandings, he was 1 step ahead all the time, with the safety of the group the priority. There were times we didn’t swim, go ashore, or go to certain areas because the Captain and Ari deemed it unsafe, mostly due to ocean conditions. Spending most of my life around the ocean, I understood and respected what they were talking about. This was very comforting to know how attentive they were.  Due to our remoteness on this trip, there was no margin for error or injury.  This isolation became evident not long after we set out, and the crew operated accordingly.  There was no hot dogging or showing off, it was all business.  One instance in particular we were snorkeling around a deep water reef with a lot of current.  We had 2 zodiacs in the water tending to the swimmers.  A large, Rogue dive boat trying to track across the channel started to get swept toward us under full power.  Ari in the zodiac recognize this immediately, drove the zodiac in front of the dive boat and started screaming at the captain.  The boat turned, got swept down current and had to come up the long way to the anchorage.  Without his quick response the boat would have come very close to us.  I was watching it all unfold and would have swam out of the way, but I can’t say that for the rest of the snorkelers, focused on the sea turtles!  Kees was also another exceptional guide.  Having moved to Jakarta from Europe 20 years ago he knew the culture quite well.  His expertise in birding was an eye opener for me.  Most nights he put on informative presentations regarding the next day’s adventures.  Another very smart, professional guide we enjoyed very much.

Small Ship Cruises in Indonesia

Explore the Indonesian archipelago's tropical islands, with friendly locals and untouched by mass tourism.

Indonesian cruises will take visitors through one of the most beautiful yet comparatively unexplored countries in the world. Though Bali has a well-developed resort culture, the rest of the country is largely untouched by tourism and ripe for explorations and discovery. With over 13,000 islands, Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelagic country and best explored aboard a small boat cruise. A cruise of the Indonesian islands takes visitors from the beaches of Bali and Sasak villages of Lombok, to the dragons of Komodo and the stone spires of Raja Ampat, not to mention the volcano-studded Spice Islands and the remote isles of Southeast Sulawesi.

A luxury small ship cruise in Indonesia will take visitors to some of the archipelago’s best and most beautiful islands. Sailing through the Indonesian islands on a traditional Indonesian phinisi ship will give visitors the opportunity to indulge in some of the best snorkelling in the world, to explore remote islands and hike through jungles to spectacular waterfalls and a chance to interact with locals. Meanwhile, for the more adventurous traveller, thrill at the chance to explore sea-flooded caves and visit the islands Rinca, Komodo or Padar to encounter the famous Komodo dragons.

Bali is arguably Indonesia’s best known island and the starting point for many Indonesia cruises. Small boat cruises typically focus on the outlying, less-visited Nusa Penida islands of Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida itself. Here, visitors find the Bali they dreamt of, studded with secluded beaches and karst caves. From the uninhabited island of Pulau Menjangan, visitors can snorkel with clownfish and angelfish.

Lombok is considered one of Indonesia’s best islands, given its gorgeous beaches, mighty waterfalls and the unique culture of the Sasak people. Visitors to Lombok will hike through the jungle to the spectacular Sindang Gila, a 40-foot tiered waterfall, before visiting the village of Senaru to delve into the Sasak people’s unique blend of ancient Animism and Islam. Much of Lombok’s beauty, however, is found off the main island and under the waters surrounding the nearby Gili Islands, including beautiful Gili Sulat, site of some of the best snorkelling in the region.

Komodo is famous for its Komodo dragons, but this driest of the Indonesian islands has so much more to offer than its monsters! Arid and hot, Komodo island and its sisters, Rinca and Padar, are rife with wildlife, from large mammals such as deer, buffalo and wild pigs, to sulfur-crested cockatoos, jungle chickens, and the white-breasted sea eagle, while sharks and sea turtles cruise undersea. But, let’s be honest, most visitors come for the Komodo dragons , the largest lizards in the world. Komodo National Park, which encompasses all three main islands, is home to over 3000 dragons, giving travellers plenty of opportunities to spot one of these near-mythical beasts—from a distance, of course . . .

Raja Ampat is a series of hundreds of islands, with most Indonesian sailing cruises visiting the islands of Misool, Batanata and Waigeo. Visitors will drift through the mushroom-shaped karst spires of Misool in search for cave paintings and undersea graveyards, hike through the mangrove forests of Batanata to splendid waterfalls, and visit traditional fishing villages on Waigeo. Meanwhile, animal lovers can scan the canopy for birds of paradise and snorkel the crystal waters in search of sharks, manta rays and seahorses.

The Spice Islands , also known as the Moluccas or Maluku Islands, played an important role in the spice trade. For over a thousand years, the islands have been the source of spices such as cloves and nutmeg, which were then valued nearly as highly as gold. Indonesian cruises to the islands include a deep dive into the history of the islands, the spice trade and the opportunity to visit the nutmeg plantations still in use today. In addition, the Moluccas feature spectacular palm-lined beaches and towering volcanoes, including the still active Gunung Api.

Southeast Sulawesi is especially untrammelled by tourists and Indonesian cruise itineraries including this region are often new, giving travellers an opportunity to feel like real explorers and pioneers. Sulawesi cruises travel across the Flores Sea, stopping along the way to explore the area’s many islands and atolls while watching for manta rays and whale sharks. In the area of Botubarani, visitors may get the chance to swim with these gentle giants. Village visits will allow visitors to engage with the locals and experience the unique cultures of this remote land.

Kalimantan , also known as Central Borneo, has been called Southeast Asia’s Amazon, due to its thick jungle, meandering rivers and varied wildlife. Among its many animal species, though, Kalimantan’s most famous resident is without question the orangutan. Certain Indonesia cruises will include an initial stop and river cruise through parts of Kalimantan, allowing visitors the opportunity to experience a true jungle adventure, complete with face-to-face encounters with the red-pelted orangutans.

Best time to cruise Indonesia

Indonesia is a large country, stretching across the equator from Southeast Asia into Oceania. Given this, it experiences a varied climate which will differ from region to region and even island to island. It is essential to plan ahead as the best time to visit Indonesia will depend on your chosen small boat cruise itinerary and the islands included.

October to April in Indonesia is the wet season in Bali and Lombok, with higher humidity and more frequent rains. This period, however, is the dry season in the Spice Islands and Papua.

May to September in Indonesia are the dry season throughout the islands, except in the Spice Islands and Papua, where it will be rainier and more humid.

Note that July and August are the peak season in Indonesia, with far more tourists and higher prices.

It should also be noted that June and July in the Indonesian region of Raja Ampat is unofficially considered windy season, when the waters may be choppier and small boat cruises slightly less comfortable.

How to get to Indonesia?

Flights to Indonesia will typically be to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, in Jakarta, on the island of Java, or to Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport. From either international airport, visitors can fly to their Indonesian cruise departure point. Note that direct flights to Indonesia are rare from Europe or North America. Many cruise departure points will require a connecting flight within Indonesia.

Where do Indonesia cruises depart from?

Indonesia luxury cruises typically depart from Sorong, on West Papua, from Ternate, in the Spice Islands, from Labuan Bajo, on Flores, from the island of Bali, or from Gorantolo, on North Sulawesi.

If your cruise departs from Bali , you will fly into Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport, and make your way to Sanur, a popular meeting point for Indonesia cruise operators on Bali. From Sanur, a shuttle will take you to Padang Bai (also called Padangbai and Padang Bay) or Amed, approximately two hours from Sanur. This is a common departure point for cruises that include the Lesser Sunda Islands, such as Bali and Lombok.

If your chosen cruise leaves from Labuan Bajo , on Flores, you will fly into Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport, and fly to Flores, with a possible connecting flight in Makassar, on South Sulawesi. This is a common departure point for cruises of Komodo and the islands of Nusa Tenggara

If your cruise leaves from Sorong , on West Papua, you will fly to Jakarta or Bali and, from there, fly to Sorong, with a possible connecting flight in Makassar.

If your cruise leaves from Ternate , you will fly into Jakarta or Bali and, from there, fly to Ternate, with a possible connecting flight in Makassar. This is a common departure point for cruises of the Spice Islands.

If your cruise departs from Gorantolo , you will fly into Bali and, from there, fly to Gorantolo, with a connecting flight in Makassar. This departure point is for Sulawesi cruises only.

If your cruise includes Kalimantan , you will fly into Jakarta or Bali and, from there, fly to the town of Palangkaraya, on Kalimantan. After the Central Borneo portion of your trip, you will return to Jakarta or Bali to continue your small boat cruise.

Indonesia Cruise Tips

  • Indonesia cruises offer a variety of experiences and activities so plan ahead when deciding on an itinerary.
  • If your arrival includes a connecting flight within Indonesia (in Makassar, for example), it is recommended to arrive at least a day before your Indonesian cruise departure date.
  • Indonesia luxury cruises offer ample opportunities for snorkelling so you may wish to bring your own gear.
  • Much of Indonesia’s beauty is found underwater, so a waterproof camera is recommended.
  • Though each island and region has a dry and wet season, note that a tropical climate means it could rain at any time, so pack accordingly.
  • Sunscreen and plenty of water are a must when visiting Komodo’s arid interior.
  • Note that passports must be valid for six months to be allowed into the country.
  • If you are asked to fill out a disembarkation card, you will need to keep your half so as to hand it back upon leaving the country.
  • The 30-day visa is the most common and will likely accommodate any Indonesian cruise itinerary. Visas can be applied for in advance, which is recommended, or upon arrival. Visas on arrival cost $35 US dollars and the exact amount, in US currency, is required.

Cruising Indonesia: Top Islands to Add to Your Itinerary

indonesia, cruise indonesia

Indonesia is the perfect place for embarking on your next adventure. With more than 18,000 islands, it’s one of the largest archipelagos in the world; Java, Bali, Sumatra, and Lombok are among the most popular ones, to name a few.

A trip to Indonesia will take you on a journey through the Indian and Pacific Oceans, floating over the Equator and exploring remote locations.

While not all of the islands are inhabited, the majority of them are; around 6,000 islands have residents and indigenous people who still live the simple lifestyle.

If you’re cruising Indonesia and want to experience a portion of the “Eat, Pray, Love” novel, then these islands are a must-visit and should be added to your itinerary.

8 Places in Indonesia to add to Your Itinerary

An Indonesia cruise will take you to the island of Lombok, a thriving beach destination and the home to Kuta.

Surfers and adventure seekers opt for this destination due to the high number of surfing, snorkeling, and diving spots and the incredible 18th-century temples.

You will see the Taman Narmada, a Hindu temple that embodies the core of Hinduism, where travelers, residents, and even kings come to relax.

So, you’ll be walking in the footsteps of royalties and indigenous tribes while exploring the area.

indonesia, cruise indonesia

The island of Sumatra is near Malaysia, and it hosts Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake in the world, located on the base of a magma chamber that once was the source of a volcanic eruption.

It’s perfect for spending the weekend since you’ll be surrounded by lovely gardens and nice, cozy hotels, which create a relaxing atmosphere.

And, in case the calm life bores you, you can visit the vibrant city of Medan, one of the largest in Indonesia and the embodiment of culinary paradise.

Try out specialties like Rendang – spicy beef, Soto Medan – a sort of chicken soup, and Nasi Padang – steamed rice topped with veggies.

indonesia, cruise indonesia

The name of Flores island translates to “flowers” in Spanish and Portuguese, and it’s undeniably one of the most beautiful Indonesian islands with its scenic landscapes, stunning panoramic vistas, and pristine beaches.

The island is a common pick-up spot for tourists who want to visit the Komodo National Park and see the “hideous-looking creatures,” as Charles Darwin referred to them.

The Wakatobi islands, located in the Sulawesi Tenggara Province, are known for their diving activities.

As a matter of fact, these islands are non-official top locations for diving, where divers can combine diving trips along Palau Tomia and Palau Hoga and enjoy the coral reefs and sea life.

indonesia, cruise indonesia

Padar Island is one of the smallest in Indonesia, however, became famous due to its natural landmarks and breathtaking views. As a fun fact you can have in mind – the island is featured on the Rupiah cash note of 50,000.

The magnificent landscapes that give off the “Jurassic Park” vibe will get you speechless. Plus, the area is surrounded by 3 giant bays that host pink, white, and a black beach.

Each of the beaches is unique and special in itself, but you must visit all to witness that beauty.

The island Padar is located 30km from a small fishing town called Labuan Bajo, and it’s west of Flores Island.

You can also see the Komodo dragon on this island and explore the red, volcanic hills, stunning savannahs, and mesmerizing coral reefs.

It’s a pretty secluded island that challenges tourists to visit it. You can take a flight from Labuan Rojo from all of the bigger airports like Jakarta, Bali, or Lombok.

Then, booking a boat tour is the right choice since the trip from Labuan Harbor to the island is around 3 hours.

Whenever you visit Padar, make sure to hike to the famous viewpoint and enjoy the sunrise view!

A stay in Bali will change your perspective of culture, history, adventure, and religion. It’s the perfect honeymoon destination, with dazzling beaches and tranquil crystal clear waters.

If you want to take a bath in the lagoon-like waters, prepare your swimsuit and take a big dive!

Each beach has its charm and characteristics in Bali, from the limestone cliffs to the white sands along the coastline. But Bali’s beauty goes deeper than its beautiful beaches and landscapes.

The island is the home of traditional customs that people still practice nowadays. For example, they participate in the kissing festival known as Omed-omedan.

Ubud, the capital of Bali, is home to many temples, shops for handicrafts, the Ubud Monkey Forest, cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, etc.

Java is one of the islands that got pretty popular in the last couple of years due to the lush jungles, metropolitan cities, tea plantations, ancient temples, hiking trails, and breathtaking volcanoes.

Simply said, Java is the economic and cultural heart of Indonesia.

The first thing most tourists notice about Java is the beautiful scenery. Mount Penanjakan and Mount Bromo are popular sunrise sites.

And if you climb the mountains, you can take a 2-hour hike through the turquoise-colored crater lake and see the blue-flamed phenomenon.

On top of that, Java is also known for its UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Among these sites, one of the must-see attractions is the Prambanan Temple, the most significant Hindu compound.

Many such one-of-a-kind temples in Java attract hordes of tourists due to the intricacy of their architectural solutions. So it can get quite crowded during the peak seasons.

To avoid these crowds, you should visit the temples in the early morning.

Komodo Island

With its rugged volcanic landscapes, crystal clear waters, and ideal spots for diving, hiking, and snorkeling, Komodo Island ranks high on the bucket list of many tourists and visitors.

It’s the ultimate getaway to the unknown where you’ll be offered a set of activities and sightseeing opportunities to discover this beautiful island.

Komodo island is more than the Komodo dragon that lives on these lands. It’s an island that has been listed as one of the New Seven Wonders in Nature.

These creatures weigh 70 kilos and can grow up to 3 meters in length. They are menacing predators who want to rule their lands and wander freely on the islands of Flores, Rinca, and Gili Montag besides Komodo Island.

The island displays a wide range of rugged volcanic landscapes, raw nature, turquoise waters, and underwater activities.

One of those activities is diving with the rich marine life and enjoying the views of fascinating creatures underwater.

Komodo Island is part of the Coral Triangle, a biodiverse area between the Indian and Pacific Oceans which consists of 37% of reef fish and 76% of coral species.

Underwater enthusiasts can explore these areas and dive with turtles, reef sharks, and manatees.

And if you ever wanted to see a Komodo dragon live, this is your chance to book a cruise to Indonesia and explore this piece of wanderlust.

Indonesian Cruises Tour, Sailing in July 2022

cruises to indonesia 2022

Good news, the cruises in Indonesia will officially leave in July 2022. Indonesia's cruise tourism has great potential in increasing the number of foreign visitors in Indonesia. The presence of cruise tourism not only presents the potential of tourist destinations in Indonesia, but also as an effort to recover the economy and create employment.

To realize Indonesia's cruise tourism, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy/Tourism and Creative Economy Agency (Kemenparekraf/Baparekraf) cooperates with the largest cruise managers in Singapore, namely Royal Caribbean and Resort World Cruises.

Several touristic destinations that are a priority for cruise excursions include: Batam Island, Bintan Island, Surabaya, Bali , Belitung, Lombok.

The plan, Cruises Genting Dream of Resort World Cruises will start sailing in July 2022 and December 2022, with 1700 rooms over a total capacity of 3500 rooms. Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean Cruises offers 4,800 rooms across Benoa (Bali) and Lombok.

Going forward, cruise tourist destinations in Indonesia will continue to be developed to other top destinations. By continuing to improve and optimize maritime infrastructure, Indonesia is expected to become a destination for many cruise ships, both regionally and internationally.

Cruise Tour Packages in Indonesia

The presence of cruise tourism may increase the number of touristic visits in Indonesia. In fact, Indonesian cruise tourism has been estimated to increase the number of visits to a destination to 2,000 to 3,000 tourists.

In order to increase the number of visitors, it will also allow to know the travel habits of all tourists who come. The objective is to allow tourists to stay longer and improve the quality of expenditure of foreign tourists in Indonesia.

One of these is to provide tours of special interest around areas that cruise ships pass, like diving in Bali and Wakatobi. The pattern of traveling from Bali to Wakatobi for diving special interest tours is considered very potential, considering that both areas are already famous for their underwater beauty among domestic and foreign tourists.

Furthermore, Kemenparekraf/Baparekraf will also offer cruise packages to all visitors. One of the tour packages offered is to visit and stop in North Bali, considering that so far the tourism sector and the creative economy, there have not been optimally exploited, even though they have great potential.

The existence of cruise tourism should bring and promote tourist destinations in Indonesia. This will provide as many business opportunities and jobs as possible to kick-start the economy and tourism sector after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Luxury Cruises to Indonesia

With over 17,000 islands that cover nearly 750,000 square miles of land and sea, Indonesia is  one of the largest countries in the world. It’s also one of the most ancient and culturally rich places on earth, with a deep history of spice trading, European influence, and intertwining religious backgrounds.

On Indonesia cruises, you’ll uncover this country’s wild, elemental natural beauty, from volcanoes and jungles in Celukan Bawang to secluded surf spots in Lombok. Get your adrenaline going on a jet ski tour around the beaches of Benoa, or try fresh vegetable curries as you sip on cool coconut milk after a yoga class in Ubud. You’ll experience the best of Bali, Lombok, and their surrounding islands on a luxury cruise to Indonesia with Celebrity.

Indonesia Cruise Highlights

Blissful bali.

Cruises to Indonesia will bring you to the world-famous island of Bali, where a boho vibe, exciting cuisine, and unspoiled beaches await. Bask in the sun on the bright white sands of Gunung Payung Beach, or head to artsy Ubud for an afternoon of yoga or a traditional dance class to rejuvenate your spirits. Relax with a fresh acai bowl or tropical blended cocktail as you overlook the palm-fringed sands of Nusa Dua and soak in this magical island’s blissful energy before heading back to the ship.

Endless Natural Beauty

Indonesia is full of natural beauty, unique biospheres, and some of the most sought-after beaches on earth. On cruises to Indonesia you’ll have the opportunity to trek to volcanic crater lakes, ride scenic boats through mangroves, surf and snorkel at tucked away jungle beaches, and much more. From casual birdwatching to adrenaline-boosting ATV safari tours, you’ll find endless opportunities to explore the natural world on a cruise to Indonesia.

Cross-Cultural Experiences

Indonesia is a country of contrasts in every way, and one of the biggest highlights of visiting is experiencing an array of harmonious, intertwining local cultures. Each port has its own traditions when it comes to food, art, architecture, dialect, and religion. This diverse cultural blend allows you to immerse yourself in a world of temples, shrines, ancient healing practices, local art, and island cuisine. Discover new perspectives, make everlasting memories, and gain a fresh understanding of how harmonious and welcoming this diverse island culture can be.

Indonesia Cruise Ports

Celukan bawang.

Celukan Bawang lies on the northern coast of Bali, fringed by dense tropical jungles to the south and the beautiful Bali sea to the north. Here you’ll enjoy the quieter, less developed side of the island. Visit Segara Karang Rata, a coastal wildlife preserve that hugs the sea, or Lovina Beach, where you may spot dolphins. Journey out to a tropical plantation to try the famous Kopi Luwak, an unusual and prized coffee. Step into the Brahmavihara-Arama Buddhist Temple, Bali’s largest Buddhist monastery, and join a meditation class.

Lombok is the perfect compliment to Bali, just across a narrow strait but different in both culture and faith. While in Lombok, explore the village of Kuta, where you’ll find small restaurants with fantastic local seafood curries, an uncrowded beach, and nearby nature escapes that are easy to access by taxi or tuk-tuk. Thrill-seekers can trek on the slopes of the towering volcano, Mount Rinjani, or for a more relaxed experience, you could take a guided jeep tour around the blue-green caldera lake, Segara Anak.

The port of Benoa is the main southern gateway to Bali for cruise ships, and a short distance from the island’s principal city, Denpasar. Take a day trip to artsy Ubud for colorful café scenes, yoga, artisan gift shopping, and a deliciously healthy acai bowl to feed the soul. Enjoy thrilling water sports like kitesurfing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing on Tanjung Benoa Beach. Visit the Pura Dalem Ning Lan Taman Beji temple site to reflect on the island’s intricate and harmonic blend of both Buddhist and Hindu traditions, where three majestic gates made of white-hued sandstone greet worshippers and visitors.

Norwegian Cruise falls as raised profit outlook fails to impress

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. plunged after its improved profit outlook disappointed investors’ high expectations amid an industry boom that’s caused record demand for sailings.

Earnings for this year will now be about $1.32 a share, the company said in a statement. That was up from its prior outlook of $1.23 a share and above the average analyst expectation of $1.28, but failed to impress zealous shareholders wanting more from surging ticket sales.

Shares fell as much as 9.46% as of 9:50 in New York, extending this year’s decline to about 14%. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and Carnival Corp. also fell.

Record post-pandemic demand for cruises has ratcheted up expectations. Royal Caribbean, the largest ship operator by market value, last week raised its full-year profit outlook above even the highest Wall Street estimate tracked by Bloomberg.

“We view this as a solid update, but not as strong as peer Royal Caribbean’s first-quarter update, nor what we believe were elevated expectations heading into the print,” Barclays analyst Brandt Montour wrote in a note Wednesday morning.

Norwegian’s revenue grew 20% in the first quarter to $2.22 billion, falling short of analysts’ $2.19 billion projection. Earnings per share excluding some items was 16 cents, beating an expected 11 cents.

Only a third of analysts covering the cruise operator recommend buying the stock, compared to at least three quarters for both Royal Caribbean and Carnival.

The missing $26 billion and the shocking downfall of Indonesia's 'perfect husband' Harvey Moeis

Sandra Dewi smiles in a blue blouse and skirt with a man wearing a dark suit and black tie in front of flowers.

Harvey Moeis and his famous wife Sandra Dewi appeared to have the perfect life in Indonesia.

A quick scroll through Ms Dewi's Instagram account showed a fairy-tale wedding at Tokyo Disneyland and occasional glimpses of a luxury car collection.

The model and actress also regularly flaunts her luxury bags and jet-setting lifestyle.

Her son Raphael's account, with 3.4 million followers, shows the toddler on a private jet, allegedly "gifted" to him by his father.

In now-deleted posts, the model and actress also posted pics of a stunning Victorian-era mansion in Melbourne replete with a tennis court, pool and in-ground trampoline.

Mr Moeis's life was idyllic to the point where he was dubbed "the perfect husband" by online users in Indonesia.

But that all came crashing down earlier this week when Indonesian anti-corruption police arrested him and placed him in handcuffs.

Local media beamed his mugshot across the nation.

Harvey Moeis wearing a pink vest and a white face mask is escorted by Indonesia police.

Mr Moeis, along with 16 other suspects, is accused of money laundering as part of an enormous $26 billion theft of funds from a state-owned mining operation.

Others are expected to be named soon.

It's the biggest corruption case in Indonesia's history and allegedly involves the use of multiple shell companies to illegally divert profits from a state-owned tin miner to Mr Moeis and others.

The miner is also alleged to have carried out operations in areas beyond its exploration permit zones, causing huge amounts of environmental damage.

For years Mr Moeis lived the high-life to the envy of Indonesia's online social media community.

Now his fortune is being picked over by investigators.

What is Harvey Moeis accused of?

Mr Moeis is accused of being a middleman acting on behalf of a private company to facilitate illegal mining in the state-owned company's concession.

A man wearing a white shirt and jacket holds an umbrella while walking next to a woman wearing a pink jacket and jeans.

Investigators say he contacted another suspect from the miner to organise the illegal mining, and then contacted several smelter companies to facilitate the processing of the ill-gotten ore.

He has also been questioned about the alleged laundering of profits from the scheme through a corporate responsibility fund that was overseen by a socialite friend.

While Mr Moeis is by far the most high-profile suspect, some industry observers believe his alleged crimes show he is more of an operator rather than one of the biggest players in the scheme.

The shocking downfall of the 'perfect husband'

The arrest of one of Indonesia's most famous husbands has sent shock waves through the nation.

A close up of a man wearing a button up shirt with his arm around a woman wearing sunglasses.

In the days following his questioning, images of Mr Moeis and Ms Dewi's luxurious lifestyle were published by media outlets and online, many of them originally sourced from the family's own social media accounts.

One of the pictures that has most fuelled public anger is the Victorian-era mansion in Melbourne. That, and the photo of their two-year-old on the private jet, that caught the attention of Indonesia's Finance Minister Sri Mulyani.

Last month, Ms Mulyani referred to the gifting of a "real" plane to a child as part of the corruption problem in Indonesia, an opaque reference to Mr Moeis just weeks before investigators made their move.

A woman smiles over a man's shoulder as he holds a little boy playing with a toy resting near a model plane.

During a raid on the family's four-story home in a luxurious district of South Jakarta, police found 76 billion rupiah ($7 million) in cash.

Officers say they also confiscated 1 kilogram of gold.

"As long as the assets are related to this case, [and] are being used as instruments of crime or the proceeds of crime, then certainly we will confiscate them," said Kuntandi, the director of investigations at the attorney-general's office.

So far Mr Moeis, Ms Dewi and their so-called "crazy rich" friend Helena Lim, who was also questioned, have declined to publicly comment as the investigation continues.

A woman in a black suit smiles with her hand on a little boy. A man stands next to her holding a child near a Christmas tree

"[Moeis and his wife were] too brave, too confident, too sure that they'll be okay when flaunting their extravagant lifestyle," said Yenti Garnasih, an economic criminal law expert in Jakarta.

"Many people are angered by this."

Inside Indonesia's corruption problem

While the enormous scale of the alleged theft has shocked Indonesians, the allegations of corruption involving the intertwining of business elites and the state are no surprise.

The country has been plagued by dozens of high-level corruption scandals in recent years.

Last year the head of a major private palm oil company was sentenced to 15 years in jail, over a corruption and money laundering scandal that prosecutors said cost the Indonesian state more than $9 billion.

The Supreme Court originally ordered conglomerate owner Surya Darmadi to pay more than $4 billion back to the state, but it was slashed to $210 million on appeal.

Investigators last year were also busy investigating the theft of more than $14 million from the pension fund of a state port operator.

While scandals have routinely involved the heads of state-owned companies and banks, they often too have embroiled members of parliament.

A former speaker of Indonesia's parliament is serving 15 years in jail over the corrupt rollout of a national identity card initiative, which involved more than $200 million of government funds going to politicians, among others.

This latest case, involving the alleged misuse of mining permits, is a common problem in Indonesia, according to Dr Garnasih.

"Indonesia doesn't have the tools to supervise properly after mining permits are granted," she said.

"This problem keeps on happening, and in many cases, the perpetrators all have guardians and protectors backing them up, including officers from the military or police."

What next for Harvey Moeis?

Indonesia does have an anti-corruption watchdog body, but its powers were weakened under former president Joko Widodo in 2019.

Joko Widodo sitting in front of a microphone

The Corruption Eradication Commission was curtailed after staff increasingly opened investigations into members of the parliamentary coalition.

Mr Widodo will be replaced later this year as president by the winner of the recent national elections, Prabowo Subianto.

Mr Subianto, who hails from an extremely wealthy family, has largely pledged to continue Mr Widodo's programs and policy agenda.

After his victory in February, he said his government "won't compromise with corruption".

But Dr Garnasih says with so many conflicts of interest among Indonesia's governing and business elites, it's inevitable corruption will persist.

"Corruption in Indonesia is abundant," she said.

"I'm sure we'll see more cases in the coming years."

As for Mr Moeis, it's expected the saga of the corruption scandal will only continue to play out over the next few months.

One of the world's biggest cities is sinking, so officials are spending $35 billion to build a new capital. Take a look at Nusantara.

  • Indonesia plans to relocate its capital from Jakarta to the new city of Nusantara.
  • The new city will cost $35 billion and won't be finished until 2045.
  • The climate crisis has prompted the move, with Jakarta at risk of sinking due to rising sea levels.

Jakarta, on the northwest coast of Java at the mouth of the Ciliwung river, is Indonesia's capital and its biggest city.

It's home to some 10.6 million people and about 30 million in the metropolitan area. It's also sinking, with about 40% of the area now below sea level.

The Indonesian government plans to move the capital to Nusantara, a new city being built on the eastern coast of Borneo, about 870 miles north of Jakarta.

It will cost an estimated $35 billion and won't be finished until 2045. However, about 6,000 government workers are expected to move there in time for the next president's inauguration in October.

The decision is not without precedent. Brazil shifted from Rio de Janeiro to Brasilia in 1960, while Abuja replaced Lagos as Nigeria's capital in 1991.

But this is the first time that the climate crisis has played a role in the process. In recent years, rising sea levels have made Jakarta the world's fastest-sinking megacity , which sparked the Indonesian government's decision to move the capital.

Take a closer look at Nusantara.

A new beginning

cruises to indonesia 2022

In August 2019, Indonesia's president, Joko Widodo, approved a plan to move the capital from Jakarta to Nusantara.

The site in East Kalimantan was chosen because it's close to the sea and there's a relatively low risk of earthquakes, tsunamis, or volcanic eruptions.

This mosque in Jakarta has been affected by rising sea levels. Excessive groundwater withdrawals have contributed to subsidence rates of up to six inches a year, and 40% of the city is now below sea level.

Environmental experts warn that a third of Jakarta could be submerged by 2050 if subsidence continues at the current rate.

Indonesia's government is also spending tens of billions of dollars on measures to try to stop flooding in Jakarta.

Researchers at NASA and partner agencies used data in 2020 to produce this map to identify areas of Jakarta under threat of being flooded.

'Nusantara' roughly translates to 'the outer islands'

cruises to indonesia 2022

The site was chosen to reflect Widodo's geopolitical vision and reflect Indonesia's unity as an archipelagic state. The country's 276 million people are spread across more than 17,000 islands.

Nusantara is on Borneo, one of the world’s largest islands

cruises to indonesia 2022

Borneo is known for its 140 million-year-old rainforests, home to endangered native species including the Bornean orangutan.

About three-quarters of the island is Indonesian territory, while the remainder is split between Malaysia and Brunei. Borneo has a total population of about 23 million people.

Construction began in July 2022

cruises to indonesia 2022

Widodo sent some 100,000 workers to start building Nusantara, and the number of workers rose to between 150,000 and 200,000 as construction ramped up.

This is how the Nusantara site looked in April 2022

A network of roads has been carved into the forest since 2022 so that the construction of government facilities and other dwellings can begin. The initial population is expected to be about 500,000, according to the project website .

Indonesia’s government has pledged to make the city 100% green

cruises to indonesia 2022

Policymakers have claimed that Nusantara will be a " green, walkable " metropolis, powered entirely by renewable energy by 2045.

Construction includes a plan to build a 50-megawatt solar plant, and aims to allow only electric vehicles by the end of this decade.

Some big names are involved in the project

cruises to indonesia 2022

Tony Blair, the former UK prime minister, and Abu Dhabi's crown prince, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, are both on the steering committee for Nusantara. In October, the Tony Blair Institute signed a deal to build a research center in the new capital.

It's not clear where the money is going to come from, though

cruises to indonesia 2022

While the city is expected to cost about $35 billion, the Indonesian government has only committed to providing about 20% of the funds, and it's struggling to find other sources of finance. In March 2022, Japan's SoftBank pulled out of investing in the project .

Cruise ship season is officially underway in British Columbia. The season kicked off with the arrival of Norwegian Bliss on April 3 — the first of 318 ships that are scheduled to dock in Victoria this year. Victoria saw a record 970,000 passengers arrive in 2023, with more expected in 2024.

The cruise industry was badly hit by the suspension of cruise operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Fuelled by heavy consumer demand and industry innovation, cruising has made a comeback. It is now one of the fastest-growing sectors, rebounding even faster than international tourism.

While many predicted a difficult recovery , a recent industry report shows a remarkable post-pandemic rebound . Two million more people went on cruises in 2023 versus 2019, with demand predicted to top 35 million in 2024.

But environmental issues plague the sector’s revival. Are they an indication of rough seas ahead? Or will a responsive industry mean smooth sailing?

Cruising has long been criticized for being Janus-faced : on the surface, cruises are convenient, exciting holidays with reputed economic benefits. But lurking underneath are its negative environmental and social impacts .

Unprecedented growth

Newly constructed mega-ships are part of the industry’s unprecedented growth. Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world , with 18 decks, 5,600 passengers and 2,350 crew.

MSC World Europa with 6,700 passengers and 2,100 crew, P&O Arvia with 5,200 passengers and 1,800 crew, and Costa Smeralda with 6,600 passengers and 1,500 crew also claim mega-ship status.

Those sailing to and from Alaska via Victoria will be some of the estimated 700,000 passengers departing Seattle on massive ships three sport fields in length.

Baby boomers represent less than 25 per cent of cruise clientele. Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z have more interest than ever in cruising, with these younger markets being targeted as the future of cruise passengers.

Two women in bathing suits lie on reclined lounge chairs on the deck of a ship

The Cruise Lines International Association asserts that 82 per cent of those who have cruised will cruise again . To entice first-timers and meet the needs of repeat cruisers, companies are offering new itineraries and onboard activities, from simulated skydiving and bumper cars to pickleball and lawn bowling.

Solo cruise travel is also on the rise, and multi-generational family cruise travel is flourishing, explaining the extensive variety of cabin classes, activities and restaurants available on newly constructed and retrofitted ships.

However, only a few cruise ports are large enough to dock mega ships. Cruise lines are responding by offering off-beat experiences and catering more to the distinct desires of travellers.

In doing so, there is a move towards smaller vessels and luxury liners , river cruises and expedition cruising . Leveraging lesser-known ports that can only be accessed via compact luxury ships offers more mission-driven, catered experiences for the eco-minded traveller.

Cruising and environmental costs

Cruise ship visitors are known to negatively impact Marine World Heritage sites. While most sites regulate ballast water and wastewater discharge, there are concerns about ship air emissions and wildlife interactions .

Cruise ship journeys along Canada’s west coast, for example, are leaving behind a trail of toxic waste . A study by environmental organization Friends of the Earth concluded that a cruise tourist generates eight times more carbon emissions per day than a land tourist in Seattle.

Also, a rise in expedition cruising means more negative impacts (long-haul flights to farther ports, less destination management in fragile ecosystems, last chance tourism ) and a rise in carbon dioxide emissions.

Toxic air pollutants from cruise ships around ports are higher than pre-pandemic levels, leaving Europe’s port cities “choking on air pollution .” Last year, Europe’s 218 cruise ships emitted as much sulphur oxides as one billion cars — a high number, considering the introduction of the International Maritime Organization’s sulphur cap in 2020 .

Rough seas ahead or smooth sailing?

Royal Caribbean said its Icon of the Seas is designed to operate 24 per cent more efficiently than the international standard for new ships. International Maritime Organization regulations must be 30 per cent more energy-efficient than those built in 2014.

But despite the industry using liquefied natural gas instead of heavy fuel oil and electric shore power to turn off diesel engines when docking, industry critics still claim the cruise sector is greenwashing . As a result, some cities like Amsterdam, Barcelona and Venice are limiting or banning cruise ships .

Environmental critiques remain strong, especially for polar expeditions . The industry must respond and increase sustainability efforts , but their measures remain reactive (i.e., merely meeting international regulations) rather than proactive. In addition, by sailing their ships under flags of convenience , cruise companies evade taxes and demonstrate an unwillingness to abide by a nation’s environmental, health and labour regulations.

In any case, environmental concerns are escalating along with the industry. Travel agents and industry figures are aware of these impacts and should help promote cruise lines that demonstrate a commitment to sustainable practices.

Local residents need to expect more from port authorities and local governments in order to cope with cruise tourism . Cruise consumers should recognize the environmental costs of cruising, and demand accountability and transparency from cruise lines.
