Casela World of Adventures

Flic en Flac

When you arrive at this 14-hectare nature park, you're greeted with a bewildering range of options – in addition to being a zoo (with big cats, rhinos, giraffes and other African mammals), the beautifully landscaped reserve offers a giant slide, animal interactions, and a variety of heart-pumping activities like ziplining, canyoning and quad-bike 'safaris' around a neighbouring home to zebras, impalas, waterbucks, rhinos and monkeys. Casela is on the main road, 1km south of the turn-off to Flic en Flac.

Children are well catered for with a petting zoo, a playground, giant tortoises, fishing and minigolf. Check out the website for a full list of prices or spend some time at the information desk before the main entrance to get a handle on how to spend your day.

If you simply pay the admission fee, you'll be free to wander the grounds, where you'll see tortoises, a huge range of exotic birds and a few primate species in cages. And make sure you pass by the Mirador restaurant, which has fabulous sweeping views of the coastal plain. Also included in the price is a trip in a safari vehicle, during which you get out and look at lions, cheetahs and hyenas from viewpoints overlooking large, grassy enclosures, and another driving through a much larger area roamed by zebras, ostriches etc.

The park is famous for offering 'interactions' with the big cats – which means you're actually in the enclosure with them, accompanied by a guide armed with nothing more than a large stick – and the hour-long 'walking with lions' experience. We don't recommend either of these two options. These are wild animals, despite having been bred in captivity. Incidents in which visitors have been mauled by big cats in similar places in Africa aren't common, but they do occur; participants here are asked to sign an indemnity form before they draw near to the animals. Questions have also been raised by animal rights groups about the quality of life for big cats in such establishments, as well as about the animals' future when they are too old to take part in activities. Any claims that these captive cats contribute in some way to conservation are incorrect.

  • Pawelino 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Disaster in St Aubin Mauritius South I visited this domaine in order to see the vanilla growing process plus other plants growing incl the rum story And rum testing ; the entrance ticket in the Domaine shop cost 650 mru/ person ; it was supposed to be min 1 hour experience ! It was not clearly explained where we should go and meet with my wife our English/ or German speaking guide . Finally we found the next shop like room where we could see on our own the vanilla film . Then a young lady pretended to tell some thing about vanilla process but it was hardly understanble and very short , then we were told to go on our own through their plants field to the restaurant nearby ( what for ???) , we went there , got inside got outside and even found the nearby rum room ! And thiseas all maybe taking all 20 minutes , without anybody later on taken care of us ; so we just went away having paid for this experience 1300 MRU , not knowing more then we knew before , Nothing planned , no information given pure chaos ! • Rachel S 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A really fun day out. Just do it Such a fun day. Lots to see and do on the estate, starting with a look at sugar growing, then on to a small animal area, with the happiest looking tortoises we saw on our mega trip around the Indian Ocean and Africa. After that there was a really interesting sector devoted to vanilla production, then anthuriums and on to spice growing. Finally...rum production with our fantastic guide, Christabelle (? Apologies if I've remembered that wrong). We tasted most of the rums they make on site, before having the opportunity to build our own rum blend with fresh fruits and spices, which was bottled and sealed up for us to take home. It's still maturing so no idea what it's going to be like, though it will bring back excellent memories of a really happy day out. Oh, and lunch at the onsite restaurant was delicious too - with rum punch included 🍹 Read more Written March 15, 2024

Firstly this place is huge and filled with a lot of information. You could visit here and not need to visit any other museum on the island. With that said though it is a lot of text to read so plan your time wisely as you could spend the day reading absolutely everything. At the end of the museum path is a gift shop and a rum section which we looked forward to however if you’re driving keep in mind you won’t be able to taste them all. We had excellent service by the gentleman at the bar. Would recommend. Read more Written February 19, 2024

Safari Adventures logo

Graeme and Julie Bristow, 3rd generation wildlife experts and consultants, moved to Mauritius in 2007 and with their combined skills created Safari Adventures, one of only three places in the entire world which provides an opportunity for people to interact with big cats and experience their behaviour up close and personally.

Safari Adventures is made up of a partnership between the Bristows of Zimbabwe and Casela NatureParks Ltd.

The Bristows have a background in wildlife with Graeme being descended from a line of wildlife enthusiasts. His grandfather, Carl, opened the Le Rhone private game park in Masvingo back in 1968, while his father, Vivian, continued the venture and has made many feature films, documentaries and commercials for numerous different countries and has travelled with his animals all over Africa to Kenya, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.

Graeme met his English wife Julie whilst she was working at Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire in England. Graeme had taken elephants to the park and from there he persuaded Julie to travel to Zimbabwe where they married and settled together.

The love the family has for animals is now in its fourth generation.

We aim to create a captive breeding group of lions, cheetah and tigers, so that we may educate people about these majestic mammals, we hope to be successful in breeding cheetah and tigers as these two are endangered animals.

The cheetah can be taken on educational trips around the island to expand people's knowledge of the animal and its current plight.

Lions are of course well known to most people from early childhood as the "King of the Jungle", yet for many they also inspire fear. We hope to show people that, when treated with the proper care and respect, lions, tigers and cheetah are wonderful creatures that they should be happy to share the earth with.

In the future we hope to bring other large African mammals to our Mauritian facility and further increase the public awareness and appreciation of these animals.

All the big cats in our care will stay at our park, they are micro-chipped and can be traced through out their lives. The majority of our lions are vasectomised or spayed to minimise breeding.

We strive to ensure that the welfare of our animals is of the highest standard, ensuring that they get the best care and love from our Rangers and Keepers!
