The ultimate guide to eco-travel in 2022   

The pandemic has given us all a moment to think about which kind of world we envision for our future. During that moment of reflection, one word has become relevant for every single industry: sustainability. But for the tourism and hospitality sector, this word is not new.  

Since the 1990s, the UN World Tourism Organization has used  World Tourism Day  to discuss tourism’s social, political, economic, and environmental impacts. Later, the UNWTO has tried to establish clear guidance and definition to foster  sustainable tourism , defined as “Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and host communities”.  

With the climate crisis already changing the world as we know it, one part of sustainable tourism has gained increasing relevance: the impact we have on our planet. Some people will say that sustainable tourism, and especially eco-tourism, is an oxymoron, but  in  The ultimate guide to eco-travel in 2022,   we will show you that it is possible. Our guide focuses on understanding what each actor can do to create a travel industry with a limited impact on the environment. We have analyzed the role played by hotels, tour operators, the aviation industry, and travelers. Because eco-travel is a collective effort.  

The ultimate guide to eco-travel in 2022     

What can hotels do  .

According to the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, the hotel industry needs to  cut carbon emissions by 66% per room by 2030.  From water consumption to using renewable energy, the sky is the limit to what the hotel industry can do to reduce its carbon footprint. At Discovery Rottnest Island, named by Forbes and National Geographic as one of the  world’s best new green hotels , visitors can sleep in luxury eco-tents. At  Qbic Amsterdam , they follow 20 points to ensure an eco-travel experience, including sustainability training for employees, avoiding single packaged items, and serving fair-trade products.    

Moreover, hotels can become effective changemakers by joining certifications. In this way, hotels will be obliged to comply with the highest verified standards when it comes to their impact on the environment. Furthermore, thanks to certifications, hotels can attract more visitors and increase their profits. According to a study,  70% of global travelers  would be more likely to book an accommodation if they knew it was eco-friendly.   

With hundreds of certifications out there, the hotel industry needs to apply to the most prestigious ones, like  Green Key  or  TripAdvisor Green Leaders . The former is an international eco-label awarded to the most sustainable facilities within the tourism industry. The program counts on the recognition of the UNWTO and United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The latter is a program launched in 2013 by TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, in consultation with UNEP and other partners, including Rainforest Alliance. Hotels, B&Bs, and hotels can all apply for this certification. Once obtained, the TripAdvisor Green Leaders badge will appear on the hotel’s listing page.  

What can airports and airlines do?  

By now, we all know that flying is the worst way of traveling for our planet. The aviation industry is responsible for a daunting 5% of global warming. Or as Jocelyn Timperley bluntly  wrote for the BBC : “Even a return flight from London to Berlin emits around 0.6 tons CO2e – three times the emissions saved from a year of recycling.”   

However, airlines everywhere in the world are making an effort to reduce their impact on the environment. This year, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, and United Airlines committed to achieving  net-zero carbon emission by 2050 . The idea is to invest in the production and deployment of sustainable aviation fuel. In Europe, KLM and AirFrance ranked again at the top of the  Dow Jones Sustainability World Index 2020.  In Australia,  Qantas  has several initiatives in place aiming at changing the aviation industry into an eco-friendlier one.  

Airports are also going in the direction of eco-travel. Ideally, they all want to become like  Galápagos Ecological Airport . Built in 2012, the airport runs completely on solar and wind power and 80% of the infrastructure was made of recycled material. To make the airport even more sustainable, Galápagos Ecological Airport has its own desalination plant to provide fresh water to its travelers. 18.359 km away, another airport is transporting passengers to the future of eco-travel.  Changi Airport , in Singapore, has a green wall to improve the airport’s air quality, water-efficient fittings, and roof-mounted solar panels.   

Singapore and the Galapagos provide some of the best examples of green airports, but  it is not always feasible to go entirely green, especially if an airport has already been built. What is possible is to take small actions with a great impact. In 2020, airports in Dubai  banned the use of single plastic .  

What can tour operators do ?  

According to the  2018 Tourism Survey by Trekksoft , ecotours are the most popular tours offered nowadays. This reflects the growing demand for eco-travels and it also shows that tour operators can play a pedagogical role in protecting the environment.  

For example, Intrepid travels offers tours all over the globe without renouncing its commitment to sustainability. Since 2010, this tour operator has been  a carbon-neutral business . Furthermore, Intrepid travels strongly encourages travelers to adopt eco-travel habits like eating locally produced food or refilling their water bottles.  

Natural Habitat Adventures went a step further. Since 2003, it has partnered with WWF, the world’s leading environmental organization, to promote  conservation travel  that they define as “sustainable travel that supports the protection of nature, wildlife and local communities”. In 2019, they also organized the  World’s First Zero Waste Adventure . The tour was a complete success and it obtained wide press coverage in some of the most popular travel magazines as Condé Nast Traveler and Lonely Planet.  

What can you do ?  

As we have said at the beginning of  The ultimate guide to eco-travel in 2022 , sustainability requires a collective effort. So far, we have seen what the travel industry can do to foster a more sustainable way of traveling. The question now is what can you do?  And even more importantly  are you ready to embrace a bit of discomfort to save the planet?  

According to a  study by The Vacationer , the answer is no. 48% of respondents said they would opt for an eco-travel only if it did not inconvenience them. However, it might be because it is a common perception that traveling sustainably is extremely complicated. You can easily debunk this myth by conducting quick research on the internet. Lonely Planet, the most famous travel guide, has published an  expert’s guide to zero-waste travel . Grow Ensemble has analyzed  21 tips to plan your sustainable trip  and the list could continue.  

At the end of the day, all tips can be boiled down to one thing: learn about your impact on the planet. By adopting this approach, it will be automatic for you to choose a means of transport with a minimal carbon footprint, as in the case of bus or train. If you really can’t do that, you might want to travel with airlines committed to protecting the planet. We are also sure that next time you plan your trip you will opt for an accommodation with sustainability at the core of how they work.  

On a final note, you can also lobby the company you are working for to organize business eco-travels. Alternatively, you can change the industry from within. You can opt for a career in the  tourism and hospitality industry  and make sustainability the priority on how you conduct your business.

Ziua 2 | Napoli–Pompei Mic dejun. Astazi vom efectua o excursie inclusa la Pompei. Veti observa cel mai cercetat vulcan activ din lume al continentului european– Vesuviu (nu se urca pe vulcan). Acesta a ramas in istorie prin eruptia catastrofala din perioada antica a lui Pliniu cel Batran in 79 d.Hr., cand a devastat prosperele orase romane Pompei si Herculaneum , ucigand mii de persoane. Ajungem la Pompei, conservat pentru posteritate de eruptia din anul 79 d.Hr, cand cladirile si o parte din locuitorii sai au fost ingropati sub un munte de cenusa si materii vulcanice (biletul de intrare se achita la fata locului). Continuam apoi cu un pranz insotit de o degustare de vin . Transfer catre hotel. Cazare la Hotel Panorama Palace 4* Meta di Sorrento (plecare 13.05), Hotel Palazzo Salgar 4* situat central Napoli (restul plecarilor) sau similare.

Ziua 3 | Insula Capri-Ana Capri-Sorrento Mic dejun. Program liber sau, optional, Excursie in Insula Capri -insula sirenelor, cum o numeau grecii. Frumusetea ei deosebita, apele turcoaz si Grota Albastra au transformat-o intr-un adevarat simbol turistic al Italiei. Incepem ziua cu Sorrento –o statiune extrem de populara unde vom avea timp liber pentru vizite in centrul istoric din Sorrento. Ne indreptam apoi care ferry pentru a ajunge pe insula. Vizitam satul Capri, fondat in jurul modernei Piazza Umberto I. Strazile imprejmuitoare abunda in cafenele, magazine de suvenire si boutique-uri de renume. Continuam cu Anacapri, un sat mult mai linistit ce ne va fermeca cu privelisti spectaculoase. Intoarcere cu ferry-boat-ul. Transfer cu autocarul de la Sorrento la hotel. Cazare la Hotel Panorama Palace 4* Meta di Sorrento (plecare 13.05), Hotel Palazzo Salgar 4* situat central Napoli (restul plecarilor) sau similare.

Ziua 4 | Coasta Amalfitana: Positano-Amalfi Mic dejun. Program liber pentru odihna sau, optional, Excursie pe Coasta Amalfitana -una dintre cele mai frumoase portiuni ale tarmului Marii Tireniene, impresionand prin peisajele naturale spectaculoase si prin localitatile pline de istorie. Transfer cu autocarul in Salerno de unde ne vom imbarca in ambarcatiunile ce ne vor purta de-a lungului coastei. Positano este primul nostru popas descris ca fiind "un loc de vis ce nu pare cu adevarat real atunci cand esti acolo, dar care devine real si tentant odata ce ai plecat". Cu o personalitate vibranta, cu casele sale viu colorate amplasate pe coasta abrupta si treptele ce fac legatura intre ele, cu stradutele inguste, acest pitoresc orasel ne va fermeca cu siguranta. Ne continuam periplul de-a lungul coastei si vom debarca Amalfi -cel mai mare oras al coastei. Deoarece orasul s-a dezvoltat gratie comertului cu porturile din Orient, arhitectura din Amalfi reflecta o importanta influenta maura. Domul din Amalfi, construit In Sec al IX-lea, reprezinta cel mai important monument al acestui oras si pastreaza nenumarate comori. Portile de bronz au fost turnate In Constantinopol In jurul anului 1000, ele fiind cele mai vechi porti ale unei biserici din Italia. Transfer cu autocarul de la Salerno la hotel. Cazare la Hotel Panorama Palace 4* Meta di Sorrento (plecare 13.05), Hotel Palazzo Salgar 4* situat central Napoli (restul plecarilor) sau similare.

Ziua 5 | Insulele Flegrei: Ischia si Procida Mic dejun. Program liber pentru odihna sau, optional, Excursie in Insulele Flegre: Ischia si Procida. Insula Procida ascunde plaje frumoase, golfuri, strazi inguste, puncte panoramice si de asemenea a fost aleasa Capitala Culturii Italiane in 2022. In ceea ce priveste gastronomia, in insula Procida puteți gasi echilibrul perfect intre mancarurile marine si cele terestre pregatite respectand traditiile locale. Printre felurile de mancare tipice se numara linguine cu homar, paste alla pescatora si iepurele în stil procidan, iar cea mai mare atractie este portul de agrement plin de culoare din Marina di Corricella. Apoi, dupa un transfer cu ferry-boat-ul, vom ajunge in Ischia- cea mai mare din grupul celor trei insule din Golful Napoli (alaturi de Capri si Procida). Coasta insulei reprezinta un loc ideal de relaxare la plaja si in apele marii, iar interiorul muntos este numai bun pentru drumetii. De asemenea, o alta atractie o reprezinta si cel mai mare oras al insulei, oras ce ii poarta numele-Ischia. Aici va recomandam o vizita la Castelul Aragonez, una dintre cele mai remarcabile atractii ale insulei Ischia, construit pe o stanca de magma solidificata legata de mal prin intermediul unui pod de piatra. Castelul Aragonez se afla la aproximativ 113 m altitudine si se poate ajunge fie urcand pe magarusi, fie cu un ascensor modern. De pe terasele castelului poti admira la orizont varful Vezuviului si celelalte doua insule ale golfului Napoli: Capri si Procida. Timp liber. Intoarcere cu ferry-boat-ul la Napoli si transfer la hotel. Cazare Hotel Panorama Palace 4* Meta di Sorrento (plecare 13.05), Hotel Palazzo Salgar 4* situat central Napoli (restul plecarilor) sau similare.

Ziua 6 |  Napoli-Bucuresti Mic dejun. Eliberarea camerelor si timp liber pana la ora transferului catre aeroport. Transfer la aeroportul din Napoli pentru imbarcare pe zborul: Plecari 13.05, 05.06, 02.07, 10.07, 02.08, 09.08, 20.08, 04.09, 20.09 : Lufthansa LH1879 cu destinatia Munchen. Decolare la ora 17:35 si aterizare la Munchen la ora 19:20. La ora 21:50 imbarcare pe zborul LH1654 cu destinatia Bucuresti. Aterizare la Bucuresti la ora 24:50. Plecarea 12.09 : Swiss LX1711 cu destinatia Zurich. Decolare la ora 14:40 si aterizare la Zurich la ora 16:30. La ora 21:30 imbarcare pe zborul LX1886 cu destinatia Bucuresti. Aterizare la Bucuresti la ora 24:50.

NOTA: Ordinea de desfasurare a programului poate varia in functie de data plecarii; insotitorul de grup, la fata locului, va va informa daca sunt modificari la plecarea aleasa de Dvs.

Excursie pe Coasta Amalfitana la Positano si Amalfi: Include: transfer cu autocarul pana/de la portul Salerno, transport ferry-boat Salerno-Positano-Amalfi-Salerno, ghid local, ghid roman insotitor. Tarife: intre 20-24 participanti 115 €/persoana. Intre 15-19 participanti 120 €/persoana.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. People are extending their vacations, and eco-travel experts say it could be more sustainable

Worldwide, vacations are getting longer.

According to a recent study by Mastercard Economics Institute , tourists around the globe are spending an average of one more day in destinations compared to 2019. In Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, people are extending their trips for two days longer than before the pandemic.

This is good news — not just for vacationers — but for the health of the planet, as travel can be harmful to the environment .

Fewer, longer trips are more sustainable

Sustainability experts previously told BI that frequent, short trips are more harmful to the environment than fewer, longer trips .

"Fewer but longer trips mean fewer air miles, more money in local hands, and you'll have a more relaxing trip, too," Justin Francis, the cofounder and CEO of the UK-based trip evaluation company Responsible Travel , said.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency , 9% of transportation carbon emissions  in 2022 came from air travel, and 57% came from light-duty vehicles. And according to Zapata, flights make up at least half of a trip's total carbon emissions.

If those extending their vacations are also taking fewer trips, they're ultimately booking fewer flights, reducing carbon emissions in the process.

This is especially true for those traveling long distances, Jessica Blotter, CEO and cofounder of Kind Travel , a public benefit corporation, told BI. She suggests stretching long-distance trips to maximize the experience so you won't crave another journey anytime soon.

"Booking multiple, long-haul trips per year is not sustainable or carbon-friendly," she said.

If you want to be more eco-friendly while at your destination, experts also recommend staying at sustainable hotels , dining at locally-owned restaurants, and shopping for souvenirs crafted by locals.

China and Russia to shore up ‘no limits’ partnership with Thursday meetup

In his first trip abroad since securing a fifth term , Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to Beijing on Thursday to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping to reinforce ties with China and their joint efforts to push back against a U.S.-led global order.

The trip will come barely a week after Xi visited Europe for the first time in five years and declined to use his influence to pressure Moscow to end its war against Ukraine. As well as providing diplomatic support, China has become a critical economic lifeline as Russia copes with mounting Western sanctions.

Xi and Putin both share a vision of a “multipolar” world order, in which countries led by China and Russia can operate by a different set of rules than the ones set by the United States and other liberal democracies.

“I expect both Russia and China will heavily focus their narrative on the failures of the West and in particular the U.S., even if not named directly,” said Meia Nouwens, senior fellow for Chinese security and defense policy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, a London-based think tank.

Coming just after Xi’s Europe visit, Putin’s trip “signals that Beijing has not changed how it views its bilateral relationship with Russia despite consistent calls from European leaders to halt China’s support of Russia’s war economy and defense industry,” Nouwens added.

Putin will be in China through Friday and will visit Beijing and the northern city of Harbin, close to the border with Russia, the Kremlin’s media service said.

It added that the two leaders “will have a substantive exchange of views on the most pressing global and regional affairs.” The negotiations will end with the signing of a joint statement of the heads of state and a number of bilateral documents, the media service said.

China’s Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that Xi and Putin will “exchange views on bilateral relations.”

The meeting between Xi and Putin will be their first bilateral summit since the Chinese leader’s trip to the Kremlin in March 2023, when the two leaders vowed to deepen Sino-Russian political and economic cooperation. Putin and Xi also met in October when the Russian leader, among others, traveled to Beijing to mark 10 years of the Belt and Road Initiative, Xi’s flagship foreign and economic project.

This week, the two are expected to shore up their “no limits” partnership, declared just weeks before the invasion. China is now one of Russia’s only remaining trading partners and friends on the global stage.

China’s importance to Russia has grown exponentially since the 2022 invasion — as a buyer of Russian energy, as a source of components that can be used in military production, and as a diplomatic partner, providing tacit support for a war that has killed hundreds of thousands of civilians and soldiers.

The Kremlin emphasized that the trip to China would be Putin’s first travel abroad since his inauguration last week for a fifth term — signaling the significance of the relationship for Moscow.

Putin and Xi share common cause in their objective of reshaping global power and ending the dominance of the United States in world affairs. While China has released a vague peace plan and called for an end to the war in Ukraine, it has not expressed strong criticism of Russia’s unprovoked invasion and seizure of territory — both clear breaches of the U.N. charter.

As Russia launches new offensive operations in Ukraine, it is looking to stabilize the country’s relations with China, including trade and energy, said Zhao Minghao, a professor at the Institute of International Studies at Fudan University in Shanghai.

“For Putin, facing pressure from the United States and Western countries, he must ensure this strategic partnership with China,” Zhao said, adding that the partnership is equally crucial for China.

Alexander Gabuev, a Russia and China analyst with the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, said that Moscow now weighs all of its foreign ties based on the war and on the benefit of any given relationship in its increasingly hostile posture toward the West.

“War has become the organizing principle of Putin’s foreign policy,” Gabuev wrote in comments on X. “He now assesses every relationship through a lens of three considerations: whether this relationship can help on the battlefield in Ukraine; whether it can help to sustain Russian economy and circumvent sanctions, whether it can help Moscow push back against the West and punish the United States and its allies for supporting Kyiv.” China, he noted, ticked all three boxes for Russia.

China’s trade with Russia hit a record $240 billion in 2023 — up 63 percent from 2021, before the invasion, and reaching a goal they planned to meet by 2024. During that time, exports of Chinese electronics needed to produce precision-guided weapons systems saw a significant spike, Chinese customs data shows.

But trade flows have increased in both directions. Russia last year became China’s biggest oil supplier as Beijing took advantage of its discounted prices. Western sanctions mean Russia has relatively few big customers left.

With Russia’s isolation and loss of Europe as its main market for selling gas and oil, Russia has turned to China and India as its primary customers. Nevertheless, Gazprom, the Russian state gas giant, reported its first loss in decades in recent weeks, increasing Moscow’s eagerness to sign a long-delayed gas deal with China called the Power of Siberia 2.

The Power of Siberia 2 pipeline, once built, will export gas from the Yamal Peninsula fields in western Siberia, across eastern Mongolia to northern China, across a span of more than 1,600 miles.

It is expected to carry 50 billion cubic meters of gas to China, the world’s biggest energy consumer.

But China has delayed a final agreement, driving a hard bargain on the gas price. If an agreement is reached, construction of the pipeline would be expected to begin this year; however, the gas will not flow until the end of the decade.

Beijing imported 107 million tons of Russian crude oil in 2023, an increase of 24 percent compared with 2022, Zhang Hanhui, the Chinese ambassador to Moscow, told Rossiya Segodnya, a Russian state-controlled media group, this month.

“This [visit] demonstrates that the mutual trust between China and Russia has reached a new pinnacle in history,” said Wang Yiwei, director of the Institute of International Affairs at Renmin University in Beijing.

Given the scheduled visit to Harbin in China’s northeastern Heilongjiang province, the two leaders may discuss measures focusing on economic development along the Far East border region, Wang said.

“There is a lot of potential for economic collaboration between China and Russia,” Wang added.

Putin may also use this visit to Asia to make good on a pledge to visit North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who traveled to Russia’s Far East last year for a rare in-person summit with Putin , and called relations with Russia his top priority. Kim pledged full support for Putin and his government amid their war in Ukraine.

Military cooperation between Russia and North Korea has ramped up since the invasion, with Pyongyang reportedly providing Moscow with much-needed ammunition and other weapons to replenish its dwindling supplies for the war in Ukraine.

North Korea, which also faces a host of international sanctions relating to its nuclear and weapons program, wants to show it stands with Russia in the face of U.S.-led economic isolation.

Putin last visited Pyongyang in 2000, when he met Kim Jong Il, the father of the current leader.
