City Cat Questions & Answers

It's just under $6AUD for a round trip that takes approx. 3 hours. You are able to hop on and off at different stops along the way too.

If you're going to be there for a few days then grab a goCard as it works out a bit cheaper. To get around zone 1 it is $5.60 per adult for a 2 hour ticket. So if you plan on getting a ferry to the CBD for example and you'll be a few hours it will cost $5.60 each way. goCards have a discounted rate :).

Brisbane City Council’s CityCats have been an iconic feature of the Brisbane River since 1996. From NorthShore Hamilton to the University of Queensland, the CityCats regularly service 18 locations and provide an exciting and refreshing way to experience the city. The CityCats are named after Indigenous place names around the Brisbane River, with the exceptions of Neville Bonner honouring Australia’s first indigenous parliamentarian, and the Spirit of Brisbane, dedicated to Brisbane’s community spirit following the devastating 2011 Brisbane floods.

Other vessels

The Brisbane City Council Fleet also consists of three different groups of smaller vessels that are utilised for Cross River and free CityHopper services. Nine monohulls - consisting of three double decker CityHoppers, and six single CityFerries - were introduced between 1994 to 1993. These vessels, with the exception of Kalparrin, have since been removed from service. In November 2020, five small catamarans, nicknamed ‘KittyCats’ were introduced to the fleet to continue these services.

The Brisbane CityCat Ferry is a via water transport service located in Brisbane. Brisbane CityCats (short for catamarans) are one of the fastest and most enjoyable ways to get around the riverside areas of the Brisbane CBD! CityCats operate through most of the day, with the first route starting at 5:25am and the last ferry docking as late as 12:55am. Services run right through the week. Tweet

CityCat Ferry Terminals are located along the Brisbane River between UQ St Lucia and Northshore Hamilton. Approximately fifteen (15) minutes north of Brisbane Holiday Village.

CityCats are exceptionally quick, don’t get caught in traffic jams, and the view is better than what you see from behind a car windscreen! Many Brisbanites prefer the CityCat method of transportation during busy peak hours.

As a tourist you don’t even need to be going anywhere. Staying on the CityCat for a complete loop will show you most of the river areas, return you to your original port and charge a fraction of what a tour cruise would in many other river cities.  Sit out the front to experience the fresh river breeze on your face, out the back to appreciate the view or sit inside out of the breeze and rain.

Types of CityCats

• CityCats are a paid transport service that dock at every ferry terminal and run frequently throughout the day and night.
• SpeedyCats are a paid transport service that provide more than 100 peak-hour express services along the Brisbane River each week (excluding public holidays). A range of services stop at UQ St Lucia, West End, Guyatt Park, North Quay, Riverside, Teneriffe, Apollo Road and Northshore Hamilton.
• SpeedyCats provide the first-ever express services to UQ St Lucia and almost halve travel times for passengers travelling between Teneriffe and Riverside. Passengers can also go from UQ St Lucia to North Quay in as little as 15 minutes.

CityHoppers

• CityHoppers are a free inner city ferry service for the Brisbane River. You can hop on and hop off the CityHopper every 30 minutes. The service runs between 6am and midnight, seven days a week.

Features & Accessibility

Brisbane City Council’s fleet of CityCats has been operating along the Brisbane River since 1996. Over the years, the CityCats have become more fuel efficient and have reduced their engine exhaust and noise emissions, while improving the onboard facilities.

Accessibility

All CityCats provide space for six wheelchairs (four spaces are located in the internal cabin area, and two spaces are located on the outer deck). Additional wheelchairs could be carried at times at the Master’s discretion based on safety and current vessel passenger loading.

Staying connected

The entire CityCat fleet is fitted with Wi-Fi allowing access to UQConnect and EduRoam, TransLink timetable information and Brisbane City Council’s website.

You can purchase a  Translink Go Card ; an electronic ticket that you can swipe as you get on and off public transport for hassle free travel. The card works on all public transport in Brisbane which includes buses, train and the CityCat ferry services.

You can top up the balance of your Go Card at pay stations around major terminals. Simply scan your card as you get on the ferry and when you get off. Your fare will automatically be deducted from the balance on your card and also display the remaining balance.

As well as offering a fresh perspective on Brisbane each CityCat stop is your jumping off point to exploring the many wonderful pockets of Brisbane.

Starting at South Bank and heading north, here are a few favourite CityCat stops you might like to try on your next weekend getaway.

Stop: South Bank 1 and 2

Why get off?

South Bank is the cultural heart of the city where restaurants, shops, markets, museums and a man made beach all coexist peacefully for the good of tourists and residents.

There’s always something happening here – from the Collective Markets on Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays, to the independent cinema where adults can see movies for less than 10 bucks, dinosaur exhibitions at the Queensland Museum , to free concerts, arts and kids’ activities. And if you’re hungry restaurants abound, from cheap eats like sushi and dumplings, to mid range like USA retro-themed South Side Diner to classy riverside joints like Stokehouse .

Stop: QUT Gardens Point

From this stop it’s an easy stroll to the City Botanic Gardens, where you can wander through avenues of figs trees and bamboo and enjoy a lazy afternoon stretched out on the lawns in the sunshine. And from here it’s about a 10-minute walk down George St, past the Queensland Government buildings to the top of the Queen St Mall and the Treasury Casino.

Stop: Riverside

Be deposited directly into the Eagle St Pier district with all its fancy pants restaurants. Avoid the overrated and outdated Sunday markets and just head for the food, including Aria, Cha Cha Char, Pony and Saké. Didn’t pack your heels and pearls? Casual but cool options include the Riverbar & Kitchen and the Bavarian Bier Café .

Stop: New Farm Park

Home to Moonlight Cinema in the summer months, the arts hub the Brisbane Powerhouse , the Jan Power Farmers’ Markets, city views, rose gardens, weekend picnics and hoards of personal trainers whipping butts into shape every morning, why wouldn’t you want to get off here? And because parking can be a bit of a bitch, especially during events, the CityCat is a great option for getting there.

Stop: Oxford St, Bulimba

It’s a bit of a trek from the terminal to the action, but Oxford St in Bulimba is brimming with shops, eats, and ways to while away a weekend afternoon. Spend time in one of Brisbane’s best bookstores, Riverbend Books , pick up a gift at Thousand Island Dressing and experience a true old school cinema going experience at the Balmoral cinema, where the original theatre dates back to the 1920s.

Stop: Brett’s Wharf

If you don’t get off here there’s only one other stop on the line – Northshore Hamilton. But aside from pure logistics, stopping at Brett’s Wharf gives you access to Racecourse Road and Portside. In town on a Sunday? Try the weekly Eagle Farm markets , where I once ate a lamington as big as my head. Have one of the greatest Thai food experiences of your life at That Thai on Racecourse Road or take the 10-minute walk over to Portside to wander around and marvel at the massive cruise ships that stop in.

Eat St at Portside

If it’s a weekend head on over to the Eat St Markets. Truth time: the Eat St Markets are so popular that at peak times you really need to get your netball elbows out to just make it through the crowds. It can be kind of unpleasant, so go early or late for the best experience. The good news is the markets are open Sundays (10am-3pm) in winter, so check out their website for all the events, entertainment and food news.

Being a cat in Little Kitty, Big City is no different — how you interact with the people around you is up to you. Are you feeling a little mischievous? Time to trip an innocent pedestrian by weaving between their legs in a very unhelpful way and then steal their phone! Feeling in need of affection? You can rub against those human legs instead and give a little purr. Humans eat that stuff up. And if you’re feeling annoying, you can meow meow meow the day away! Who doesn’t love a very noisy cat following them around for no reason?

Navigate The World

Cats are graceful (sometimes), small, can climb ivy walls, squeeze into tight spaces and always land on their feet! Since you’re no longer a clumsy human in this game, all those tiny little spots you never thought you’d be able to fit into are now open to you as a little kitty. From the rooftops to ground below, all the vents, awnings, cars, and fences are your domain. Except those big puddles. Let’s just stay far away from those…

Express Yourself

As you explore the city, you will meet other cats who will offer new ways to immerse yourself in the mind of a cat. You’ll learn crucial kitty emotes like how to make muffins, have a biiiiig stretch, take naps, sits where you fit, and even gag at gross smells or unpalatable tasks! These gestures are an invaluable part of your toolkit for self-expression and can be combined with Kitty’s extensive wardrobe of collectible hats to create the perfect reaction to a situation.

Try the Sunflower hat with the biiiiiiig stretch for Kitty’s attempt at the traditional Sun Salutation yoga flow. Follow that up by swapping to the Crab hat and making a yuck face in the greengrocer’s – you must protest her lack of seafood. Then round off the day by donning the Sheriff’s hat and lashing out with a paw swipe at a board game. How else will the humans know that you’re not into chess?

Humans don’t understand how hard cats work to find the perfect nap spot. In fact, if cats didn’t spend so much energy looking for new places to sleep, perhaps they wouldn’t be so sleepy in the first place…? But that’s a topic for a different blog! What you need to know for Little Kitty, Big City is that, when you find a good nap spot, you want to get in there immediately, and in whatever pose fills the space. After all, when a nap is at stake, who cares which way the humans say your spine and limbs are “supposed” to be facing!
