TRAVEL GUIDE TO COSTA RICA: BEST TIME TO VISIT

Costa Rica is a tropical country, so you should be prepared for rain at any time of year. And that’s not a bad thing since it’s this rainfall that makes Costa Rica so lush and also a heaven for wildlife. The country’s climate is defined by two primary seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. The dry season (or high season) is from December to April and it is considered the best time to visit as there’s a smaller chance of being drenched in the rain. The rainy season (or “green” season) is generally from May to November: it may rain for several days in a row and torrential rains are frequent, but on a positive note, hotel rates and tour prices are significantly lower and the country turns a wonderful deep green with waterfalls gushing.

The best time to visit Costa Rica depends on where you want to go as the country’s climate and seasons vary by region:

  • The Osa Peninsula – home to the world-famous Corcovado National Park – is the most southern zone of Costa Rica and also the wettest area of the country. The dry season on the Osa Peninsula is relatively short and runs from January to March. Also, the dry season here is not dry at all as the area’s humidity is extremely high, usually resulting in an afternoon shower or thunderstorm.
  • Guanacaste on the Northwest Pacific Coast experiences much less rain than the rest of Costa Rica. Even during the rainy season, it can be sunny here for several days in a row.
  • Contrary to the rest of Costa Rica, the Caribbean Coast has its own climate. This area experiences the best weather from April to September, with often sunny skies and calm blue waters while the rest of Costa Rica is drenched in rain.
  • During the summer months of July and August, the rainy season is in full swing in most of the country (except for the Caribbean Coast). Wildlife enthusiasts might prefer this time for a visit though since summer is the best time to observe green sea turtles on the coastline of the Tortuguero National Park and the whales in the Pacific Ocean around the town of Dominical.
  • The months of September and October are the height of Costa Rica’s wet season. Travel during these months is not recommended as torrential heavy rainfall makes wildlife spotting difficult and roads may become impassable due to higher river crossings or landslides.

TRAVEL GUIDE TO COSTA RICA: HOW TO GET THERE

Most travelers arrive in Costa Rica via one of the country’s two major airports:

  • Juan Santamaría International Airport is Costa Rica’s primary airport, serving it capital San José. The airport is named after Costa Rica’s national hero, Juan Santamaría, a drummer boy who died in 1856 defending his country against forces led by American filibuster William Walker. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to San Jose.
  • Guanacaste Airport , known before as Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport is located close to the city of Liberia in the Guanacaste Province, and it serves as a tourism hub for those who visit the Pacific coast and western Costa Rica. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flight to Liberia.

If you are touring the entire country, I suggest you fly in via Juan Santamaria Airport and – after ending your holiday on the beach in northwestern Costa Rica – depart via Liberia.

Before you buy a plane ticket, consider reading my  tips & tricks for buying the cheapest plane ticket .

TRAVEL GUIDE TO COSTA RICA: ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Requirements for entry in Costa Rica differ from country to country, and are subject to change. Prior to departure, always check with your government and your nearest Costa Rican embassy or consulate what documents you need for travel to Costa Rica. Some important points:

  • Visitors to Costa Rica must have a valid passport as well as proof of their intent to exit the country before their visa or entry stamp expires, usually within 90 days.
  • All non-resident travelers must possess a return ticket or a ticket as proof of when they intend to exit the country, commonly referred to as an outbound exit or onward ticket.
  • Travelers coming from the following countries must possess a yellow fever vaccination certificate before entry into Costa Rica will be allowed: Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Bolivia, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and the Republic of Guyana.

Make sure you read my  10 tips to plan a worry-free trip .

TRAVEL GUIDE TO COSTA RICA: GETTING AROUND

Getting around Costa Rica is comfortable but it can be time-consuming (roads in the mountains are narrow and winding, and there’s a lot of traffic). Significant improvements to the national highway network in the past few years have made traveling around the country much easier than it once was, and a new multi-lane highway is currently being built between San José and Liberia.

  • If you’re short on time, the best way to travel within Costa Rica is by plane . The national carrier Sansa offers turbo-prop flights between the capital San José and the country’s many beach destinations and provincial towns. These flights can be particularly handy for traveling to the more remote corners of the country. For example, the flight from San José to Puerto Jiménez (the main town on the Osa Peninsula) takes just 50 minutes compared to six hours by car.
  • Renting a car is the easiest and often cheapest way of getting around the country. The conditions of the roads in Costa Rica are quite good, plus with your own vehicle you can see the country at your own pace without having to adhere to plane or public transfer schedules. The majority of the car-rental companies are located nearby the international airports of San José and Liberia. Buying basic insurance is mandatory.
  • If you are on a budget, you may consider public transport. Privately run buses and vans by  Interbus are well maintained and tickets can be booked online on the official website.
  • If a bus or plane sounds too public for you or you don’t find a time schedule that fits your itinerary, it also possible to book private transfers with a chauffeur-driven car via most hotels at often reasonable prices.

TRAVEL GUIDE TO COSTA RICA: INSPIRATION, HIGHLIGHTS & TRAVEL TIPS

There are many reasons why  Costa Rica  should be on your bucket list:

  • Multi-day trekking in the rainforest of Corcovado National Park
  • Adventure tours in the area around the Arenal Volcano (white water rafting, ziplining, canyoning)
  • Relaxing on the beaches of the Guanacaste Province
  • Staying at a luxury hotel or rainforest lodge
  • Observing tropical wildlife in Manuel Antonio National Park (e.g. sloths, pumas, monkeys, etc …)
  • Get a bird’s-eye view of the forest from a suspended bridge at Monteverde cloud forest
  • Witness turtle hatching on the beaches of Tortuguero National Park

It’s impossible to suggest one itinerary for Costa Rica in this travel guide, but I hereby share with you a schedule based on my own holidays in Costa Rica, which is great if you want to see the country in a time frame of two weeks:

  • Recommended hotel: Nayara Tented Camp
  •  Recommended hotel: Los Altos Resort
  •  Recommended hotel: Lapa Rios
  • Recommended hotel: Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo or Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo

Costa Rica Luxury Vacations

Central America’s showpiece, Costa Rica mixes sustainable tourism with healthful adventure and farm-to-table cuisine to exceptional effect year-round. While both the Pacific and Caribbean coastlines yield stretches of beach and ample watersports recreation, the Costa Rican interior is full of things to see and do, including the vibrant capital city of San Jose.

The whole country is a spectacle of natural escape, replete with rejuvenating hot springs, entrancing waterfalls, yoga, and surfing.

With a dozen different ecosystems, Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse places in the world, and a gold standard of conservationism: About a quarter of the country is protected by natural land filled with volcanoes, hot springs, and the most incredible wildlife you will ever see. Eco-luxury travel doesn’t get any more exciting than natural hot springs, massages in treehouse spas, and jungles filled with wildlife. Blink and you will miss the toucans, capuchins, colorful quetzal birds, green iguanas, and sloths, not to mention the monkeys – howler monkeys, spider monkeys, white-faced monkeys, and the rare squirrel monkey. The national parks deliver a complete ecology lesson. Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the country’s most popular, sporting multiple swimmable beaches, accessible rainforest adventure, and family-friendly fun. The same goes for Corcovado National Park, where trails lead from beaches to mangroves to the inland rainforests. In the north, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve sees your head literally in the clouds, the low-level cover lending a mystical aura to more than 25,000 acres of forest. Of course, the bespoke adventure doesn’t begin and end with hiking in the rainforest. The whole country is a spectacle of natural escape, replete with rejuvenating hot springs, white-water rafting, entrancing waterfalls, intrepid canyon rappelling, yoga, and surfing. Pacific beach havens like Playa Flamingo, Playa Conchal, Tamarindo, and Nosara are scintillating hives of activity. A shade north, Peninsula Papagayo is the epitome of private luxury cradling Culebra Bay, home to the largest marina in the country, a yachting paradise. A healthy lifestyle and perhaps more importantly a good attitude toward life lend Costa Ricans their pronounced Pura Vida, a salutation you will hear everywhere, meaning “pure life.” The fact that the population shows a marked propensity for longevity is one more reason to visit – this place will rub off on you.

I just came back from my Costa Rica trip , it was amazing, the attention to details , everything I wished for in this trip was there , not to mention the lovely surprises arranged by lily and Berni like lovely picnics , photographer and even a helicopter ride . Everything from the almost last-minute pivot to travel to Costa Rica and the execution of the scintillating itinerary was amazing. Demi Roberts planning and coordinating was seamless. The Jacada local team accommodated every wish and needed adjustment as did the resorts. But above all, the activities were beyond our highest expectations. Active stops (zip-lining, horse back riding, dolphin watching, hiking)…

The planning process was smooth. Lily was great. She listened and made suggestions. All drivers and excursions were on time and very enjoyable. We really enjoyed the accommodations. Great experience.

Planning my daughter and my adventure with Berni and Jen was easy and fun. We outlined the key things we wanted to do and they put it all together. Throughout our holiday, we enjoyed ziplining, nature walks and sloth searches, traversed the hanging bridges, hiked to waterfalls, rafted into and out of our amazing lodge in the rainforest and were…

Luxury Tours & Vacations in Costa Rica

Why should you travel to costa rica on a luxury vacation with us.

Back in the early days, we found ourselves in these heady jungles almost by chance. Now we can’t tear ourselves away.

When you’re located between two gigantic continents, you might be considered a bridge; a place of transit, a place for moving through rather than into. As long ago as 2005, we began – after a chance trip found us in its hushed jungle depths – the patient work of finding out every detail and part of this staggering country; of seeing it as a destination in its own right, rather than a point between. We spent time with the Marimba musicians of Nicoya. We talked with restauranteurs and hoteliers in San Jose. We joined tribal guides and trekked through from the Caribbean coast. We searched for the ruins of ancient civilizations and came eventually to Arenal Volcano. Today, our luxury itineraries are the product of our curiosity and the contacts we’ve made since those early days. So, Xavier, Victor, Eva and Sara (just some of our favorite private tour guides), this one is for you.

Example Costa Rica trips

Ultimate costa rica: a jungle to beach adventure, pacuare to papagayo: a luxury conservation adventure in…, nicaragua, costa rica & panama: central american highlights, tortuguero to nosara: a luxury beach holiday in…, create your own itinerary, what to see and do in costa rica.

If you can’t see your ideal trip here then we can still plan it for you.

Whilst it may be bordered by gorgeous beaches, we love Costa Rica for the adventure playground it lays before us. It’s the times when we have surrendered ourselves to this wild environment that we have felt most alive, as we’ve ziplined over volcanoes and peered into the lives of ancient tribes. A place to push yourself, a tailormade vacation in Costa Rica makes for an unmissable adventure.

A PLAYGROUND FOR THE SENSES

Costa Rica wildlife

The jungles are dense, the beaches luxurious, and the culture utterly magnetic – this is Costa Rica. This country draws you in and pulls you close, from the Pacific to the Caribbean and everything in between. We’re convinced that no other Central American country currently specializes in luxury like Costa Rica does, and we’re fully invested. From the tree tops of the rainforests to the treasures of the oceanside, a multitude of surprises are in store while vacationing in this country.

A LUXURY ADVENTURE IN CENTRAL AMERICA

Corcovado National Park Beach in Costa Rica

A destination fit for daredevils, the captivating country of Costa Rica is best unearthed from soaring ziplines, crushing white rapids, and volcano summits. A tailormade tour of this phenomenal region can be customized to include the region’s most pulse-racing thrills, including meet and greets with exotic animals, treks through the misty rainforest, and overnight stays to remote resorts. In such an intrepid and glorious land, it’s only right to fuel your adrenaline in what’s nicknamed ‘the adventure capital of Central America.’

RAISING THE PULSE

Hanging bridges, Costa Rica

Home to endless stretches of postcard-worthy beaches, the glistening waters on both the Pacific and Carribean side attract travelers from all corners of the globe. Needless to say, only a lucky few experience it with the Black Tomato treatment. Head to Arenal for a dose of life on the cusp of Manuel Antonio National Park, a paradise of crystal clear waters and dreamy resorts. Alternatively, Puerto Jimenez offers guests easy access to both pristine beaches and one of the country’s most vivacious rainforests.

A VIVACIOUS VOYAGE

Cathedral Point at Manuel Antonio National Park, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a country synonymous with ecotourism. In all of its lush, green splendour, it proudly boasts a collective-array of luxury options for those interested in sustainability and conservation. The local mangroves and rainforests are showered with properties that offer guests intimate opportunities to interact and give back to the country’s quaint villages and exotic wildlife. Whether seeking to learn more about reducing your carbon footprint or interested in minimizing the negative impact humans have on the planet’s biodiversity, Costa Rica serves as a mecca for the curious and philanthropic.

CONSERVATION IN COSTA RICA

Feel what it truly means to experience the ‘pura vida’ (pure life). Wild, untamed and visually flawless, the Osa peninsula is a playground for adventure and discovery. Go zip-lining through the expansive jungle that envelops Drake Bay and allow one of our expert guides to talk you through the wildlife that inhabits Corcovado Park. Take up the challenge of a two-day hike through the rainforest lowlands, where you’ll be rewarded with hidden lagoons, secret beaches and an exclusive picnic courtesy of us.

OSA PENINSULA

Puerto Jimenez in Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

With close to 680 hectares of pristine tropical utopia to explore across Manuel Antonio National Park, falling in love with Costa Rica’s rich, rugged, and biodiverse jewel is easy. Find your groove as we guide you on a hike around its mangrove swamps and lagoons, listening to stories of the Quepoa tribe that roamed the land in the pre-Colombian era. Head out to sea, where dinner awaits (keeping your eyes peeled for dolphins), before heading back to Manuel Antonio Beach in time to observe a vibrant sunset you’ll never forget.

MANUEL ANTONIO NATIONAL PARK

Manuel Antonio National Park, Capuchin Monkeys

Loosen up and relax on the laidback Nicoya Peninsula, where barefoot luxury awaits. The Florblanca Resort will steal your heart, whether you’re there for a suite with its own private beach or the legendary surf house where your world-class instructor is on hand to sharpen your skills on Santa Teresa Beach. If breaking waves is not on your agenda, then you can explore the Pacific coast by horseback or simply enjoy an exclusive yoga session.

NICOYA PENINSULA

White water rafting? We’ll take you down Costa Rica’s scenic Río Pacuare, where you’ll zip through forests home to jaguars, ocelots, and countless wild birds before you arrive at the romantic Pacuare Lodge for a spot of downtime. Go all-out here in the canopy suite and get closer to nature with your own dining platform complete with river views and a private hammock. We love the true sense of serenity the views here impart on you. Work worries? No worries.

A gigantic, brown-black volcano, and the epicenter of Costa Rica’s more adventurous side.

This is a big, riveting place; from the huge shores of Laguna de Arenal to the peak which gave it its name. Deep forests, banana and coffee plantations, and charming settlements are the order of the day, as is the continent’s longest zip line – running between the craters of two (dormant) volcanoes. Horse-back riding, biking, and hiking are – in these picture book surrounds – an utter joy. In a word: adventurous.

A city built on beans.

Charming, eccentric, and incredibly easygoing, San Jose – or Chepe, as it’s locally known – is not big. Not at all. But it has a certain, unshakable grandeur; with neoclassical columns and baroque ornaments framing such necessities as Barrio Amón, home to its coterie of contemporary art galleries, or the indulgent food hub of Barrio Escalante. In a word: fun.

Explore the kingdom of the tortoise.

This region of Caribbean coastline – palm-thronged, and caressed by unbelievably warm waters – is a destination for turtle spotting and conservation programmes. Night walks during nesting season are unmissable, as is the discrete charm of Hotel Manatus and the rivers which flow, eventually, to the sea. In a word: calming.

14 Best Hotels and Resorts in Costa Rica

These are the best hotels in Costa Rica for every type of traveler.

luxury travel expert costa rica

Arenas del Mar

Costa Rica — Travel + Leisure ’s Destination of the Year for 2024 —  is a biodiverse wonderland with rainforests, cloud forests, volcanoes, hot springs, sandy beaches along the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, and incredible wildlife (including three-toed sloths and white-faced capuchin monkeys).

A hub of ecotourism, the best things to do in Costa Rica range from cloud forest hikes and chocolate farm tours to surfing and yoga. Sure, you could fill a trip with myriad activities, but it’s equally wonderful to kick back, relax, and soak in the chilled-out spirit. For these reasons and so many more, this peaceful Central American nation wedged between Nicaragua and Panama stands out as a top vacation destination and one of my all-time favorite countries to visit. (We even spent an entire month in the beach town of Santa Teresa to celebrate my son’s first birthday .)

When it comes to accommodations, the hotel scene is as diverse as the terrain and varied attractions themselves. There are beautiful beach resorts that put guests steps from the waves, luxury tented camps, more rustic eco-lodges surrounded by prolific jungles, and five-star stays focused on wellness. Budget travelers will also find cool hostels with excellent Wi-Fi that allow digital nomads to work and play the pura vida way.

To help pick the perfect home base to make your tropical vacation dreams come true, we’ve rounded up the 14 best hotels in Costa Rica according to readers, travelers, and experts.

Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel

Hideaway Rio Celeste

Also available to book at Tripadvisor.com

It’s the only luxury hotel on the Rio Celeste.

You’re packing for the rainforest, so bring a waterproof jacket, sturdy boots, and insect repellent.

A World's Best Awards winner in 2023, Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel earns top billing for its location on an 80-acre rainforest reserve in the foothills of northern Costa Rica’s Tenorio Volcano National Park. Past guests rave about the wildlife encounters, scenic trails, exclusive swimming access, and wild spirit. Light-filled casitas look out over the gardens or rainforest. While lounging by the pool or relishing a massage at the spa, there’s a real sense that you’re a million miles away from the realities of the daily grind. Despite its off-the-grid atmosphere, the property does have Wi-Fi if you need to check on things back home (though disconnecting is obviously encouraged and honestly pretty easy to do in such a stunning environment).

  • Accommodations: Breakfast, wireless internet, and access to the gym included; private river access
  • Location: Located in Rio Celeste, Costa Rica
  • Nearby Attractions: Sits within the heart of the Tenorio Volcano National Park
  • Rates: Rates start at $435 per night for two adults

Lapa Rios Lodge

Accommodations, meals, non-alcoholic drinks, and most on-site activities are included in the rate.

The minimum guest age is 6 years old.

Set on 1,000 acres of tropical lowland rainforest overlooking the Golfo Dulce on the Osa Peninsula, Lapa Rios Lodge is a true luxury eco-lodge — and one of the first properties in the country to earn the distinction. The sustainably minded hotel supplies open-air, treehouse-style bungalows with ceiling fans, solar-heated water, and bamboo furnishings. Favored for its commitment to nature and immersive experiences, guests love seeing frogs, howler monkeys, and scarlet macaws on guided night walks and birdwatching activities. For more adrenaline-pumping adventures, why not try surfing or scuba diving? On the food front, the chefs at Brisa Azul spotlight seasonal ingredients through plant-based and carnivore-friendly menus.

  • Accommodations: Meals, non-alcoholic drinks, and select on-site experiences included
  • Location: Located on the Osa Peninsula
  • Nearby Attractions: Sits within 1,000 acres of rainforest reserve, overlooking the point at which the Pacific Ocean meets the Golfo Dulce
  • Rates: Rates start at $1,268 per night for two adults

Hotel Nantipa

Also available to book at TripAdvisor.com

It’s a boutique oasis in the chill beach town of Santa Teresa.

High season (December through April) books up quickly.

Located in Santa Teresa , a low-key beach town on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula , one of the world's Blue Zones, Hotel Nantipa channels laid-back vibes in a design-forward way that still speaks to the untamed nature of the region. Sheltered by foliage-frame pebbled paths, standalone bungalows flaunt breezy decor and indoor/outdoor showers. Our favorite feature? The private terraces with hammocks and plunge pools. While the fully stocked beachfront villas are perfect for multigenerational families and larger groups. There’s also a lovely main pool and an intimate spa sanctuary. Manzu Restaurant occupies a prime spot right on the sand. It’s a splendid setting to eat fresh sea bass ceviche, sip on a pineapple margarita, and watch the sunset.

  • Accommodations: Breakfast included, on-site activities include yoga, movie nights, beach clean-ups, and surfboard rentals
  • Location: Located in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica
  • Distance to Airport: Fifty-minute drive from Tambor Airport (TMU)
  • Rates: Rates start at $495 per night for two adults

Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort

It’s the only luxury resort in Manuel Antonio that’s right on the beach.

You’ll need to take a flight, rent a car, or arrange transport through the hotel from San Jose to Arenas del Mar.

Positioned within an 11-acre private nature reserve that connects to Manuel Antonio National Park, Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort is the luxury beachfront resort in Manuel Antonio. So, if you’re a fan of swimming in the ocean, building sandcastles, and lounging under a shaded umbrella, it’s the best option. Further distinguishing itself from other properties in the area, it has luxury suites with sweeping views and plush king-size beds that helped earn it a coveted spot on T+L’s World's Best Awards list in 2023. The property also brings guests close to incredible wildlife with the chance to spot red-eyed tree frogs on nocturnal walks with in-house naturalists and go on daytime excursions to the biodiverse Barú National Wildlife Refuge.

  • Accommodations: Full a la carte breakfast included
  • Location: Located in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica
  • Nearby Attractions: Sits within an 11-acre private nature reserve and connects to Manuel Antonio National Park

Pacuare Lodge

The minimum guest age is 7 years old.

There are no roads leading to Pacuare Lodge; most guests arrive via the Pacuare River.

Pacuare Lodge makes eco-tourism dreams come true, starting with the adrenaline-pumping approach. Most guests arrive at the far-flung refuge by rafting in on one of the world’s most beautiful white-water rivers. The thrills continue with ziplining through the forest canopy and canyoning. A scenic backdrop for adventure or relaxation, the intimate property marries an untamed landscape and indigenous Cabécar-inspired architecture. When it’s time to kick back, gardens and secluded suites with large terraces and private spring-fed pools await. Alternatively, a trip to Jawa Juü Spa or downward dog by the river is a great way to reset. True to its low-impact quintessence, the culinary program takes a farm-to-table approach emphasizing fresh, local ingredients.

  • Accommodations : Meals, non-alcoholic drinks, transportation, select on-site experiences, and electric golf carts to get around included
  • Location: Located in Turrialba, Costa Rica
  • Rates: Rates start at $1,336 per night for two adults

Finca Rosa Blanca

Piotr Bratosiewicz / Finca Rosa

The signature shade-grown organic coffee tour includes a cupping experience.

It is close to the capital but far from the beach (about two hours).

Situated in the highlands above the capital of San Jose, Finca Rosa Blanca blends hospitality and agriculture. A 14-key inn and sustainable coffee farm, the property is the perfect place to sip home-grown java while admiring the majesty of volcanoes and tropical forests. Not surprisingly, given the quality of the crops, the gourmet offerings are a standout across the board. The cuisine celebrates the region's culinary traditions while introducing creative twists that excite the palate. In addition to touring the shade-grown coffee plantation and tantalizing their tastebuds, guests have the opportunity to swim in the infinity pool, do yoga, go on excursions with in-house naturalist guides, bliss out at the wellness center, and snooze in character-filled suites featuring comfy beds, jacuzzi tubs, private verandas, and hand-crafted artwork.

  • Accommodations: Breakfast, afternoon Rosa Blanca organic coffee, and cookies included
  • Location: Located in the coffee highlands of the Central Vally in Costa Rica
  • Distance from Airport: Twenty-five-minute drive ride from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO)
  • Rates: Rates start at $360 per night for two adults

Hotel Aguas Claras

Full board upgrades are available.

The high season is typically the opposite of the rest of Costa Rica’s peak rainy period.

Seated between the rainforest and beach on Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast, Hotel Aguas Claras gives travelers a taste of two different realms of natural beauty. That means access to Playa Chiquita and an abundance of tropical flora. Besides its spellbinding nature, it has plenty of design credentials courtesy of individually designed one- and two-bedroom bungalows and themed suites appointed with local art and handcrafted decor. At this easy-going boutique oasis in Puerto Viejo, guests can also look forward to experiencing Afro-Caribbean culture. Love aquatic adventures? The property is located just 25 minutes from Cahuita National Park, which houses the country's largest system of coral reefs.

  • Location: Located in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica
  • Distance from Airport: Twenty-five minutes from Cahuita National Park
  • Rates: Rates start at $365 per night for two adults

Know Before You Go

Decide what kind of trip you want..

What’s so amazing about visiting Costa Rica is that you can tailor a vacation to your interests. Do you prefer to hang by the pool or spend days riding waves and building sand castles? Are rugged rainforest adventures a must, or would you like more spa time? Are you traveling with kids? (Some properties have age minimums, so that’s something to consider.)

Be honest about how much you’re willing to “rough it."

Costa Rica is a bastion of untamed natural beauty. And while it's tempting to go all in on a remote lodge, that might not be the best fit for every traveler. Before settling on a hotel, ask yourself: Do I need Wi-Fi? Is air conditioning a must? Am I OK with a long drive on windy roads?

Consider seasonality.

Because of Costa Rica’s topography and varied terrain, certain times of the year bring swings in weather to different parts of the country. Looking into this ahead of booking will help you to avoid the rainy season in the rainforest or skip the peak period by the beach.

Be mindful of budget.

Accommodations in Costa Rica run the gamut from backpacker-friendly hostels to five-star resorts. Some luxury hotels cost upwards of $1,500 a night. But you certainly don’t need to spend that much for a five-star stay. Whatever your budget, it’s possible to find a fabulous overnight.

How We Chose These Hotels

Lindsay Cohn is a travel journalist with a deep love and appreciation for Costa Rica. The hotels on this list were chosen based on her personal experience and research and the first-hand accounts of Travel + Leisure editors and other contributors. Many of these hotels have also been voted into their respective categories in the World’s Best Awards by T+L readers.

Papagayo Luxury Villa Rentals

Vacation Rentals on Costa Rica's Peninsula Papagayo

luxury travel expert costa rica

Founder & President

Jane Moore is the Founder and President of Papagayo Luxury .  She has worked in many industries throughout her career, but has always been a part of the travel and luxury industries in one way or another.  After becoming an owner in the exclusive Peninsula Papagayo Resort, she felt there was a need to help other luxury travelers get to Costa Rica and enjoy one of the most magical places on earth.  Below is a past interview that helps shed light on the path that Jane took while starting Papagayo Luxury.

To watch Jane Moore bounding around the tennis courts at Peninsula Papagayo, or maybe enjoying lunch with her two kids at the Prieta Beach Club, you might think — how sweet —  tourists making the most of their vacation. But something’s a little off: the whole family is nicely tanned, not sunburned. They’re ordering in Spanish. And Jane seems to know the staff very, very well. She’s friendly with everyone, and if you listened in, you’d hear stories of an inner-circle nature.

“I’m an anomaly here,” Jane admits. “The majority of the condo and villa owners under contract with Papagayo Luxury live most of the year in North America and just come down for a week or two once or twice a year.” Papagayo Luxury, of course, is the company Jane started in 2012 to help other owners rent their properties to visitors on a short-term basis. With four villas and four condos currently under contract, this vacation rental firm has some choice options to offer discriminating visitors. Jane’s company has grown steadily. In this, her local status has been useful.

She commutes about once a month between the peninsula and her home in Costa Rica’s capital province of San Jose [Jane and family now live in Miami and she regularly commutes to Peninsula Papagayo]. As one of the original owners of a condo at Papagayo, Jane has seen the place blossom like a tropical flower. “The Peninsula was always special,” she said. “The developers designed it with conservancy in mind. Underground cables, protected areas, maintaining the wilderness corridor to keep wildlife moving through; they really have thought of everything. That’s what attracted us to buy here.”

Buying a lot and a condo at Peninsula Papagayo was an alternative to the boutique-hotel-on-the-beach plan she initially formulated when they moved to Costa Rica in 2004. Sound audacious? That’s Jane. The relocation to Costa Rica was rooted in the intention for long-term adventure. “I wanted my kids to grow up in a different culture, where they could learn another language,” she explained. “I’d always been attracted to Latin America. When I did the research, Costa Rica stood out for a lot of reasons: no military, good weather, friendly people, and a really beautiful country.” She laughed. “It was kind of a no-brainer.” So she and her husband packed up the car and headed south from L.A.

Making bold, risk-taking moves look easy seems to be in Jane’s nature. On the other hand, her base of reference is admittedly broad; she’s been traveling most of her life. “We started when I was in eighth grade when my family took a trip to Israel. We wanted something seriously different from Indiana and that worked.” Apparently, that trip to Israel did it. The travel bug bit her, but good.

She’s journeyed through over 33% of the earth’s countries since then, everywhere from Iceland to Africa, Russia to China, Taiwan to Australia, Europe, the Caribbean, etc. And fancy tour bus travel was never Jane’s style. Her college major in Asian Studies from DePauw University explained the summer in Taiwan and the semester in China, where she studied Mandarin, but she’s taken some, uh, unusual trips since then.

Her work in ad sales for magazines and companies such as Turner Broadcasting and National Geographic must have made the travel itch twitch. She has tracked and collared lions in Kenya as part of a scientific study of a particular breed of mane-less predators. She took a self-guided photographic safari in Botswana and Namibia, and her love of hiking, rock climbing, scuba diving, and adventures of a decidedly outdoor nature brought Jane from one breathtaking location to the next. But the eventual urge to settle in Costa Rica finally gave her a place to sink roots. “I handed in my resignation to National Geographic and the rest is history.”

Jane’s status as an owner and a Costa Rica resident gives her an insider’s perspective when it comes to finding the right house or villa for each client. Papagayo Luxury is a family-oriented business, and many of her clients arrive with three generations. “The condos can easily accommodate a grandparent or two along with the family,” she said. With the variety of activities available, from a relaxing round of golf on the Arnold Palmer signature course to a wild ride on a zip line, or a day of deep serenity at the Four Seasons Spa , each generation has a dream vacation just beyond the front door. At a villa, with five or six bedrooms available, two or more families can vacation together. The convenience of on-site private chefs makes this a comfortably workable arrangement. No fuss, no muss. If a night out is preferred, there are, literally, a dozen top-tier restaurants at hand, right on the Peninsula.

As Jane’s clients are also her neighbors, even on a temporary basis, she is a discerning agent. “This is a structured community,” she said. “Our roads are monitored with speed limits and guards who stop speeders. There are little kids around and wild animals crossing the roads, too. The guards are watching out for anyone driving too fast.” One speeding guest received not only a warning from a uniformed Peninsula guard, but an environmentalist’s lesson on the vulnerability of native wildlife. “I was impressed,” Jane said with a grin. “I’m glad the guard was conscientious enough to educate the guy. Now he knows better.”

As a traveler, mother and entrepreneur, Jane juggles a load of responsibilities. Her job is made easier, however, by the work of concierge Gerardo Chavez, associate member of Papagayo Luxury. A network of Peninsula professionals are dedicated to making visitors’ stay as delightful and carefree as possible. Jane and Gerardo and the rest of these associates stand ready to serve. So, do yourself a favor: check our luxury villas and condos and book one now!

(Not to mention it’s a less-than-five-hour flight from Houston, about a four-hour flight from Atlanta, and a three-hour flight from Miami.)

Thanks to the many benefits of Costa Rica life, vacationers often feel like they never want to leave. Luckily, they don’t have to: “There are no restrictions to purchasing property in Costa Rica,” confirmed Wagner Loria, real estate agent and broker with Keller Williams Tamarindo . (The only exception is when applying for some beachfront and coastal properties, which may require a certain percentage to be owned by a Costa Rican, added Melanie Engel, broker and owner of Flamingo Beach Realty in Playa Flamingo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.) “American citizens have the same rights as locals when it comes to investing in the country. A good real estate attorney, title company, and accountant, plus an immigration expert and a good real estate agent, will be your best resources.”

If you’re interested in investing in a vacation home in Costa Rica, expect the process to take about one to three months, including prospecting, showings, offers, contracts, deeds, escrow, appraisal, inspections, and taking possession of the property, Loria added.

Any investment of more than $150,000 allows you to apply for residence as an investor, which offers benefits like expedited immigration window for residence, exempted import of up to two vehicles and one container exempted from taxes with households, among others.

“Related costs for the buyer range from 4 percent to 5 percent of the total investment. Real estate taxes are as low as 0.25 percent to 0.55 percent per year,” he explained.

Once you plant roots in this Central American country, you’ll either be in — or nearby — one of the five Blue Zones on the planet. Nicoya, Costa Rica is a Blue Zone where residents practice healthy habits that make it more common for them to live to 100 years or older.

“Investing in real estate for $150,000 or more can lead to potential residency options, which may be appealing for those looking to spend extended periods in Costa Rica,” said Anna Velez, real estate consultant with Coldwell Banker Coast to Coast Properties in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.“This comes with many perks including a tax free import of two vehicles for personal use.”

You can also tap into the 180-day tourist visa as you search, or utilize the new digital nomad visa , which allows Americans to stay up to one year without having to renew the visa if they can show a certain amount of income per month. (Work from beach home? Yes please.)

“Every imaginable taste and need can be satisfied in Costa Rica; be it a desire for a luxury lifestyle or one that embraces nature. Infrastructure and public amenities are reliable throughout, too,” Engel told Travel + Leisure . “The real estate market in Costa Rica is surprisingly stable and not prone to the bubbles and bursts experienced in North America. Those seeking to make Costa Rica their permanent home or aiming to purchase a second home can feel confident that their investment is sound.”

In addition, Velez added that compared to many U.S. vacation destinations, Costa Rica offers competitive real estate prices.

“Our clients are constantly surprised with the amount of house and land they can buy here with the same budget compared to their home cities in the U.S. The country's thriving tourism industry also offers excellent rental income potential for vacation homes when you're not using them,” Velez said.

If all of this sounds like a sweet deal, here are the best destinations to consider investing in your second home in Costa Rica.

If you’re a surfer, this is where you’ll want to hang for more than 10. There are more than 10 popular surf locations within 30 minutes — along with what Wagner said is a “chill lifestyle, ocean views, many activities, and strong resale value.”

Tamarindo is about 90 minutes from Liberia International Airport and has many expat services available, according to Engel. It tends to cater to a younger crowd, Velez said, but all are welcome. And you can leave your stresses stateside.

“Tamarindo’s atmosphere is laid back and fun-loving,” Engel added.

Weather is warm and breezy year-round, and both immigrants and locals are active in the community that’s studded with clinics, furniture stores, private schools, shops, and more than 100 restaurants.

Most properties in Tamarindo are walkable to the beach, shops, and the 100+ restaurants in town.

“Starter homes here range in the $350,000 to $500,000 range, with luxury and ocean-view homes $1 million to $2 million. Condos start at $250,000 for two-bedroom and two-bathroom property, but can climb over $1 million for luxury ocean-view condos,” Velez said.

Playas del Coco

A mere 25-minute drive from Liberia International Airport, Playas del Coco (also known as Coco) is the closest full-service beach town to that airport, Velez said. When she says full-service, she’s not kidding: The town features a major hospital, supermarkets, banks, specialty shops, and medical offices, as well as more than 70 restaurants and bars.

“The beaches around Coco are calm and are perfect for swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, and paddle boarding,” Velez said.

This area earns bonus points for affordability: The real estate prices in Playas del Coco are among the lowest of all beach cities in Costa Rica. (Translation: Your money will stretch here when you’re purchasing a second home.)

Several high-end luxury developments are being built nearby, including luxury Waldorf Astoria resort and residences, right in between Playas del Coco and Playa Hermosa. An ultra-luxury One & Only hotel is being planned for the area between Playa Hermosa and Playa Panama as well.

Expect starter homes to be listed between $200,000 and $400,000. Ocean-view and luxury villas clock in around $800,000 to $1.6 million, and condos go from $200,000 for a two-bedroom and two-bathroom to $700,000 for luxury and ocean-view developments, Velez estimated.

If a cooler climate and mountainous scenery is what you’re after, look into La Fortuna.

“Located at the foothills of the famous Arenal volcano and near the magnificent Arenal lake, this town offers a lot of local flavor with an abundance of hiking opportunities,” Velez said.

There are not many luxury homes in La Fortuna, but there are some of the world’s best hot springs —along with what Velez described as “enchanting waterfall hikes and jungles filled with hanging bridges and zip lines.”

Homes start in the $200,000 and $400,000 range; the average La Fortuna home is available for between $400,000 and $800,000. There are also a few very large acreages and farms with homes on them that sometimes go up for sale.

Reserva Conchal

Many of us envision paradise like this: White sandy beaches, tropical blue waters, and a slow pace; these are just a few of many amenities that make this 2,300-acre luxury gated community at Playa Conchal a hot area to invest in.

Beyond being safe, beautiful, and secluded, according to Engel, “here, you’ll be amazed by tropical greenery, numerous bird species and Pacific sunsets that dazzle Playa Conchal.”

While it’s not cheap (lots go for $400,000 to $2.5 million, condos from $650,000 to $3 million, and homes from $750,000 to $10 million), your property will place you within steps of a golf course, tennis and pickleball courts, a 60,000-square foot beach club, a state-of-the-art fitness center, 13 restaurants, two spas, zip lines, skate and dog parks, miles of hiking and biking trails, a 98-acre wildlife reserve, and one of the top three expat schools in the area, Engel added.

When your guest room overflows, visitors can treat themselves at the nearby W Costa Rica - Reserva Conchal and The Westin Reserva Conchal.

Las Catalinas

You’ll be ahead of the curve if you snap up a second home in Las Catalinas.

“This newer car-free beach town presents an irresistible opportunity for buyers seeking a captivating blend of lifestyle and investment potential,” Engel said.

It’s a secure community that’s located on Playa Danta and Dantita, a region that offers a lovely blend of nature, beaches, and what Engel defined as “abundant conveniences.” (Think: Ocean-view and beachfront restaurants, a food court, an onsite grocery store, wine cellar, beach club with multiple pools, an indoor and outdoor gym, and miles of hiking and biking trails through the tropical forest.)

If yard work isn’t your idea of fun, consider the Casa Chameleon Hotel, which is situated at a high point within Las Catalinas. This offers some of the best views in the area and has residences currently up for sale.

Lots in Las Catalinas are $150,000 to $2 million, condos run from $400,000 to $2 million, and homes start at $1.5 million and climb to $10 million.
