Fast Travel (Skyrim)

  • Edit source
  • View history

Fast Travel is a method of travel in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim . It is a way of quickly "teleporting" to any previously discovered location . The travel takes place almost instantaneously in real-world time through a loading screen , but in game time will still pass by as if the Dragonborn had walked there. When using fast travel, the time elapsed may be longer than the time it would have taken to run to the destination, especially when the distance is short.

Fast Travel can be done via the world map or by using one of the carriages stationed near the main gate of many cities. Fast travel via world map is free, but can only be done to a location that has already been discovered. Travel via carriage is limited to major cities, regardless if they have been visited or not before, with a fee relative to distance and the size of the destination city (for example it costs more to travel from Whiterun to Dawnstar than from Windhelm to Solitude even though the distance between Windhelm and Solitude is greater). The Hearthfire DLC allows the Dragonborn to hire a carriage for their homestead , which will also go to smaller cities  and towns ( Darkwater Crossing , Dragon Bridge , Ivarstead , Karthwasten ,  Kynesgrove , Old Hroldan Inn , Riverwood , Rorikstead , Shor's Stone , and Stonehills ).

With Dawnguard , fast travel can also be done between Castle Volkihar and the main island of Skyrim by boat. With Dragonborn , the initial trip to Solstheim must be by boat. (Conventional fast travel can be used later, between the docks at Windhelm and Raven Rock .)

  • 1 Conditions
  • 2 Fast travel time

Conditions [ ]

The fast travel cannot be done while in any of the following conditions:

  • While indoors
  • While jumping
  • While falling
  • While mounting or dismounting a horse .
  • While being too close to enemies
  • While being pursued by enemies/ Hold Guards
  • While taking health damage (e.g. from poison )
  • Riding on horseback.
  • Under the effect of a Fortify Carry Weight potion that is strong enough. There is no limit on fast travel distance while the potion is in effect. However, the effect of the potion immediately wears off after the arrival causing the Dragonborn to be overburdened again.

Fast travel time [ ]

Approximate time to travel between cities/towns wearing Light Armor , measured by in-game hours:

  • The amount and type of armor worn affects how much time passes during fast travel.
  • Fast traveling while on foot or on horseback takes the same amount of time. The only difference will be how the Dragonborn arrives: on foot next to the horse, or on horseback.
  • Any positive or negative effects (such as from a disease ) will still progress during fast travel.
  • Neither the Dragonborn, their horse, or any companion will encounter any enemies during fast travel.
  • Due to the respawning of enemies , dragons and creatures being scripted to happen when fast travelling; if fast travel is never used, after a certain time, encounters with them will reduce noticeably.
  •  PC     360     PS3    When arriving at a location by fast travel, random creatures can spawn in front of the Dragonborn. For example, a non-hostile bandit might spawn every time they fast-travel, who can be talked to but will become hostile if attacked. A similar bug happens when fast-traveling to Falkreath , causing all of the Hold Guards to spawn at the entrance to the city.
  •  PC    Fast traveling with followers to northern cities like Windhelm or the College of Winterhold can trigger a sliding effect on arrival. Normally, this effect is not critical; however, it is possible to sometimes slide for a very long distance and fall from a cliff.
  •  360    After waiting in a location for a long time (two or three weeks), or if multiple other characters have been played before returning to play as the affected character, fast traveling to a location might spawn enemies that have made into thralls (or raised as zombies) in the past. They will attack each other unless they are in the same faction. (Only bandits or spiders, for example).
  •  360     PS3    If fast travel is selected to any location and the back button is immediately pressed, the fast travel will not occur, the game will no longer be paused and the character menu will not be able to be opened. The pause menu can be opened, but saving the game will be the only option that functions, not loading an existing save. The "quit game" option is available, however, allowing a more time consuming reload of the game by saving and exiting the game. Reloading the game will fix this.
  •  360 (Fix)     PS3 (Fix)    Manually shut down the console, as any attempt to open the Xbox or PS3 menu will result in the loading circles on every option and they will never load.
  •  PC     360    Fast traveling on horseback to the College of Winterhold may cause one to appear several feet above the bridge.
  •  PC (Fix)    Quickly Fast traveling to another place before the horse falls off may solve the problem.
  •  PC     360     PS3    Sometimes, when attempting to fast travel, the game will say "You cannot fast travel while guards are pursuing you," even if guards are not pursuing the Dragonborn.
  •  360     PS4    Fast traveling from a snowy location can sometimes cause it to snow in areas that do not normally experience snowy weather conditions.
  •  PC (Fix)    Fast traveling to any location will fix this.
  •  PC (Fix)    Exiting the game to the desktop restarting will fix this.
  • By opening the Journal and pressing the "show on map" button for quest objectives it is possible to access the map, and thus fast travel even under circumstances that normally prevent access to the map, such as after the Dragonborn dies or at the beginning of the game while Helgen is under attack.

Enabling and Disabling Fast Travel with Skyrim Fast Travel Mods

skyrim fast travel timescale fix

Skyrim Fast Travel Mods can be used to either enable or disable Fast Travel. In this article, we’ll show you how to change the settings for these mods.

Top Fast Travel Mods in Skyrim

Fast travel mods for Skyrim are quite handy for people who want to save time or have an easier time exploring Tamriel’s vast realm. Fast Travel Mods enable users to go between areas fast and easily without physically traversing the environment. Fast travel mods are available for players to pick from, each with its own set of perks and features.

“ Travel Anywhere ” is the most popular rapid travel mod. This patch provides many additional rapid travel options, such as a virtual map, better teleport spells that no longer need spell purchases, and the ability to teleport straight inside dungeons and other areas in Skyrim’s environment. This mod also includes a number of extra features, such as limiting rapid travel to particular regions, making some factions hostile when traveling, and more.

Other popular mods include:

  • Faster Than Light , which speeds up movement over long distances;
  • No More Wait , which minimizes travel wait times; and
  • Instant Travel , which enables players to immediately shift between any two spots on the world.

Fast Travel Mods may let you explore Tamriel more efficiently and enjoyably.

Better Fast Travel Carriages and Ships Overhauled

Better Fast Travel Carriages and Ships Overhauled is a Skyrim fast travel mod that offers new transportation choices for players to utilize when traveling throughout the game. The update introduces ten new ships and nine new carriages , all of which have been meticulously tuned to give players with speedier and more effective means to travel Skyrim’s geography.

Carriages may be leased in numerous towns, while ships can be found docked in certain spots. Players benefit from faster trip times and may reach their destination considerably faster than previously with this update. Players also have the advantage of being able to dodge challenging terrain or hazardous enemies that might otherwise delay or hurt them on a normal voyage.

The mod is very customisable and can be enabled/disabled using the game launcher’s mods menu as well as scripting commands.

Better Horses

The Better Horses mod for Skyrim Fast Travel allows users to make their horses significantly quicker than the default game. This makes traversing Skyrim considerably faster and more efficient.

With this mod, players may now buy, tame, and breed horses , as well as design personalized stables for their steeds and modify all of the horse’s colors and attributes. Players may even ride during fights while using this Fast Travel mod, and horse-related minigames can be added by installing additional relevant mods.

Players may activate and disable Better Horses in the game’s options menu if they are running a Quick Travel mod that adds additional places or a fast travel menu. This enables players to pick whether they want the horses they’ve acquired or tamed to go throughout Skyrim at extremely fast speeds or at regular rates while still being able to personalize them.

Marelos Overhaul

Marelos Overhaul is an Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim mod that lets users modify how they utilize fast travel . It also adds additional options for activating and inhibiting fast travel, such as giving players discretion over when and where fast travel is permitted.

The mod also includes additional features such as the option to deactivate quick travel in certain places and make it accessible just at specific times of day or night. Finally, the Marelos Overhaul mod allows players to change the pace of movement when Fast Traveling , making it quicker or slower based on the player’s preferred play style. All of these choices are advantageous for people seeking a more personalized experience with their Skyrim playthroughs.

Skyrim Disable Fast Travel

Skyrim Disable Fast Travel is a mod for the popular video game Skyrim. This hack disables quick movement inside the game, requiring players to navigate the globe manually. It does, however, enable the player to employ mods and teleport techniques other than basic rapid travel.

The mod is excellent for individuals who desire a more realistic feeling of reality or just want to explore more of Tamriel without depending on rapid teleportation. It may also help to extend playtime in Skyrim by requiring players to complete side missions and spend more time exploring rather than depending on quick travel.

There are multiple versions of this mod available, each with unique features and setups that may be customized based on user preferences. This mod may be found on Nexus Mods , and installation instructions are given in the readme file .

Carriage and Ferry Travel Overhaul (Formerly Complete Fast Travel Overhaul)

The Carriage and Ferry Travel Overhaul , originally known as the Complete Fast Travel Overhaul , is a Skyrim multiple marriage mod. This patch enables players to go to any place by boat or horse-drawn carriage while keeping the game’s fundamental rapid travel mechanism.

The mod makes the journey more engaging, as well as more realistic and touching . It also includes new animations, music effects, camera angles, and character models, all with the goal of making the game environment seem more alive and dynamic.

This mod also contains a number of options that allow players to choose how quickly they can travel long distances without losing immersion. The patch also considerably improves the overall Skyrim travel experience by introducing a number of quests and destinations that can only be accessed by utilizing the new modes of transportation given by Carriage and Ferry Travel Overhaul .

Fast Travel From Interiors

Fast Move from Interiors is a Skyrim mod that allows the player to travel quickly from their present position, even if they are already inside. The mod will enable players to fast travel to any area they have previously found while within another building, dungeon, or any other interior . This improves the convenience of rapid transit and allows players to move around more quickly. It also avoids the need to exit and then re-enter an interior space upon returning.

Fast Travel From Interiors will also make questing simpler by letting players to finish each job step more efficiently, with less time spent waiting for each changeover. Players will be able to move quicker between quest stages since they will be able to go straight from each interior place without first entering back into the overworld. This mod is ideal for anybody who appreciates ease and quickness in their gaming experience.

Thats All Folks!

That’s All Folks. marks the end of Skyrim Fast Travel Mods . These mods allow you to activate and disable quick travel in-game, making for a more immersive gaming experience. When activated, rapid travel lets players to explore Tamriel swiftly and effortlessly without having to worry about lengthy, tiresome travels. When disabled, however, players are forced to depend on horseback riding and walking from one location to the next.

Some modders also develop complex fast travel systems that need particular goals to be accomplished before teleporting from one location to another. These mods may add a new level of difficulty and complexity to the original game.

That’s All Folks. ” acts as a nice reminder that you are now prepared for your next excursion.

Fast Travel Bug

Hearthfriend

This may be an engine bug, but I didn't see it mentioned after performing a search on this forum or the Skyrim forum.  In my current game I'm unable to fast travel and get the message, "Fast Travel is not permitted from this location".  I investigated my current mods and couldn't find a cause there, then read a posting on the Wiki ( http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:920357).   Basically, I just entered a console command (player.moveto 000198ab) and, after teleporting, I was able to fast travel as normal.  Is this something that can be addressed in the patch?

That's normal as far I can tell, but it depends where, what location/cell, you tried to fast travel from or to.

i was outside High Hrothgar heading down the steps.  I tried several other saves from different outside locations and couldn't fast travel from any of them.  First time this has happened to me.  I've had no problems with fast travel on other games.  So it's not normal behavior.  But it works fine now from this game since I used the console to fast travel that first time.  Not a big deal now.  Just a bit frustrating trying to figure out what was wrong.

lmstearn

Never ever used the console for anything else before that in the current save game? Skyrim can be a delicate mechanism in certain scenarios when untested modding can be rather deleterious to the integrity of the save.

Just out of interest, please post the mod list,.

The only thing I've ever used the console for is to change the timescale.  Better Fast Travel - Ships and Carriages is a loose files version since the mod author has not transferred to Skyrim SE.  The loose files version disables fast travel, but I tried editing the file to remove that and it made no difference.  I also tried disabling the mod (as a test only) and that also made no difference.  You might argue that the fast travel command is embedded in my game, but fast travel works fine after I used the console to teleport.  In any case, thanks for your response.

Here's the list of mods:

It's got a few scripts- remove them or even try removing all BFTD mod data from the save with script cleaner.

You might get away with running LE mods in SSE if they are script only- BFTD has a few meshes and textures which may not render- haven't looked to see what else is in the esp.

Could you run?

If so then you probably have a corrupt gamesave, otherwise it doesn't make sense unless there is a mod preventing you from fast travel from High Hrothgar or there were at least one enemy too close.

If you've been using console commands (like "moveto" or "coc") then chances are your game save is corrupted and could be the reason why you're getting this problem. I've never been unable to fast travel except in areas where you aren't supposed to or when an enemy is nearby.

@Leonardo:  Well I've left High Hrothgar and don't have a save from there, but I can run down at Whiterun.  I don't understand the reference to running and corrupt game.  There was no enemy close by nor was I overloaded.  In fact, I've tried fast traveling from several save games/locations and can't fast travel unless I first use the teleport command I described above.

@BlackPete:  The only console command I've used is to change the time scale.  Although I used the moveto command to test whether that would resolve the fast travel issue, I didn't save after that based on Imstearn's warning.  So I'm still unable to fast travel.

I've got over 1100 hours in Skyrim/Skyrim SE, and have never experienced this issue before.  Because I've played this game so much (and TES VI is no where in sight), I've added quite a few new mods to this latest playthrough (Dawnguard Delayed, Dragonborn Delayed, Encounter Zones Redone, Essential Housecarls, Horse Storage and Whistle, Immersive Citizens, MorrowLoot, Survival Patch) plus Survival mode.  I'm planning to start a new game with limited mods so I can test whether BFT or another mod is causing this issue.  All comments thus far are appreciated and any further suggestions are also welcome.

OK, I'm an idiot.  I started a new game and disabled BFT and all the new mods.  Turns out that it's not a problem with any of my mods -- it's Survival mode that disables fast travel.  If I don't enable Survival mode, then I can fast travel.  I thought I had looked up the description before, but now I see that the description on Bethesda.net clearly says that fast travel is disabled.  Strange thing, however, is that if I enable Survival mode as soon as I exit the Helgen cave when the pop-up asks, then fast travel is disabled (even if I disable Survival mode later).  If I say no to that pop-up and enable Survival mode later, I can still fast travel while in Survival mode.  So I guess there is a bug in that esl file.  Note that no console commands were used in this test.

Sorry for all the confusion.

Insteresting observation you made.  You should post about it on Bethesda.net.

As for using a gamesave.  Did you deleted all gamesaves?

If you didn't then you can always try the Autosave gamesave.  I always do that when my gamesave (normal) is corrupt and often it helps.

I have the Helgen exit game save from this restart, but not from the game I posted about in my original post at top.  I'm level 25 in that game, so am resuming it.  I don't believe I've done anything to corrupt that game, so will resume it.  I restarted only as a test to understand what was going on.  I still have those restart saves, and will discard after a few days.  Good suggestion to report on Bethesda.net -- though, I will be surprised if Bethesda reads and does anything about it.

  1. Fast travel timescale fix at Skyrim Nexus

Looks like the global setting fFastTravelSpeedMult set to 1 was the cause: changing it to 4 makes fast-travelling timings much more on par with a "real run" to that location. 3. Fast Travel Timescale Fix (by rolloLG, Hexaae)

Edit: I also wonder how time scale setting effect this value. If the two settings work independently, then anyone using an alternate time scale setting lower than 20 would probably want a higher fFastTravelSpeedMult or else fast travel times might still appear inconsistently slow even with this adjusted value.

  4. Any mod to calculate fast travel time BEFORE fast traveling?

The final option, which would probably be the simplest and best (although definetly not perfect) workaround, would be to use WryeBash to make a patch. It seems that you can't fast travel with this command at 0 - makes sense because when player fast travels the game adjusts the game time according to distance travelled.
