We strongly suggest you reserve approximately two hours of your time at Chowmahalla. The Palace is a historical landmark, with decades of culture and history for you to explore. Explore at ease, let your thoughts wander, and enjoy its beautiful ambience. Please carry your own reusable water sources, and ensure that any eatables and wrappings are carried back home with you. We believe there is nothing more ineffectual than an experience one is rushing through. Explore at ease, let your thoughts wander, click a few photographs, simply be. The Palace, and its history, is for you to explore. The Palace is a grand collection of structures, spread over acres – we need your co-operation to keep it clean and tidy. We strongly suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes. While all of the Palace is situated on flat terrain, it is a large area to cover with ground texture alternating from marble to grass to gravel. It’s best to be prepared for all situations, and most importantly, to be comfortable. There is ample space for you to sit and relax. No need, at all, to rush through your Chowmahalla experience. We invite you to avail of our offerings of snacks and drinks at the canteen, located near the entrance gate. While grabbing a bite, your eyes may stray towards our beautifully curated souvenir shop. Packed with a wide range of decorative items, show-pieces, jewellery, and artwork – we promise you will be tempted to pick something up for yourself, or your family! Please note – Consumption of alcoholic beverages, cigarettes and other tobacco items are forbidden on the Palace grounds.

Public Transport

Chowmahalla Palace is easily accessible to the public.

The closest Metro Station is MG Bus Station in Gowliguda. It is located at a distance of 3.7Kms from Chowmahalla Palace, which can be covered in any of the multiple autos always available at the station

Bus & Auto

The Palace is a veritable landmark in Hyderabad, and one of the prime points of convergence in Old City – the other being the marvellous Charminar, located less than 1km away. Buses stop directly opposite the main gate of the Palace, and one would be hard-pressed to find Multiple Autos and Taxis available at the station-rickshaw driver who is not familiar with the gullies of Old City.

Private Transport

One may follow along the directions provided by Maps application on your smartphone. It is best to remember that one follows the road turning to the right of Charminar, right up to the Palace Gate. Do not hesitate to ask for directions from folks on the road – we Hyderabadis are a helpful bunch. There is ample parking inside the official Palace compound, however we are usually rather busy. It is always recommended to come earlier on in the day, if planning to occupy any space in the parking lot.

One can also reach the palace via MMTS. The closest station is Yakutpura Railway Station located 2-Kms away from the palace.

This opulent 18th- and 19th-century palace compound, the main residence of several nizams, comprises several grandiose buildings and four garden courtyards. Most dazzling is the Khilwat Mubarak, a magnificent durbar (royal court) hall where nizams held ceremonies under 19 enormous chandeliers of Belgian crystal. Its side rooms today house historical exhibits, arts and crafts, and exhibits of nizams' personal possessions. Chowmahalla Palace entry fee : The  Chowmahalla Palace tickets  cost Rs. 50 for adults and Rs. 10 for children below 12 years of age. For Foreigners the ticket price is Rs. 200. Video cameras are charged Rs. 100 and still cameras are charged Rs. 50 extra.

Timings : The  Chowmahalla Palace timings  are 10 am to 5 pm on all days except Fridays. Fridays are closed.

How to reach Chowmahalla Palace

The Chowmahalla Palace is very close to Charminar which is located at the city centre. It is not a hard task to access this area. You can take trains to the Nampally or Hyderabad Stations. Also there are multiple buses plying in that area. You can also drive through or take a cab or rented car to reach the spot.

History of Chowmahalla Palace

Chowmahalla literally means Four Palaces. The Urdu word Chow means four and Mahalat or Mahalel means Palace or Palaces. From there the palace got its name because there are 4 palaces inside. The construction of this palace was started by Nizam Salabhat Jung in 1750. Later during the period of 5 th  Nizam of Hyderabad Afzar-ud-daulah in between 1857 to 1869 the construction was completed. Originally the palace sprawled across 45 acres from Laad Bazaar in the north to Aspan Chowk in the south. However at present the total area of the palace is around 12 acres. In 2005 this palace was restored and then opened for public viewing.

Architecture of Chowmahalla Palace

It is said that the Chowmahalla Palace looks similar to the Shah Palace of Tehran in Iran. There are two courtyards in the Chowmahalla Palace. Each of them is further divided into southern and northern courtyards. There are 4 palaces in the southern courtyard like Aftab Mahal, Afzal Mahal, Tahniyat Mahal, Mahtab Mahal. The Aftab Mahal is the biggest Mahal which is a two storied structure. Another part is the Afzal Mahal which has beautiful glass doors and windows. But entry to the Afzal Mahal is however not allowed. One can only peek through the windows to see what is inside.

Moving on, the northern courtyard has a Bara Imam. It comes with a long corridor with rooms on either side. In those times these were used for administrative purposes. There is a Shise-Alat which means mirror image as well which is like a chamber where guests and important officials were received. Furthermore there is a Roshan Bungalow which was named after Roshan Begum. She was the mother of the sixth Nizam. Another intriguing thing is the Khilwat Clock found inside the Clock Tower. This is one of the oldest features of this palace and this clock is continuously ticking from the time of the construction of this palace. Next is the Council Hall where you will find many personal collections of rare books and manuscripts of the Nizams.

However, the grandest area of the place is the Durbar Hall. You can find a platform made of marble there where the Takht-e-Nishan or the royal seat was laid. The centre or heart of the palace is known as the Khilwat Mubarak. This palace was once the other name for grandeur. For the grandness and the charm of this palace, comparisons are drawn between the Chowmahalla Palace and the Enchanted Gardens of Arabian Nights. It is also believed that once there were almost 7000 attendants for this massive palace at one point of time. Another thing that attracts the visitors here is the sprawling lawn with lush greenery that looks splendid. Also there is one fountain just in front of the palace that looks majestic in its appearance.

What’s more?

The highlight of this palace is the intricate stone carvings on the walls and ceilings. These carvings speak for its artistic brilliance and fine craftsmanship. From massive glass chandeliers to various galleries with artefacts, the palace has a lot to offer to its visitors. These galleries showcase furniture, crockery, utensils, currency notes and coins, clothes etc. Also different weapons used during the ancient times are displayed here that are very interesting to look at. The displays at the palace are well maintained and there are descriptions for them too which is helpful to the visitors for a clear understanding.

There is a separate section for the Quran known as the Quran section in the Palace. You will find different Qurans like the Handwritten Qurans, miniature Qurans printed in metals like gold, Naskh script etc. The Japanese technique of restoration is used to preserve all these handwritten Qurans.

Chowmahalla Palace is a great and popular spot as a wedding venue as well. If you can afford the  Chowmahalla Palace wedding cost  which can be somewhat near about Rs. 250000, then you can think of hosting an event here.

There is enough space for parking of vehicles inside the main gate of the palace.

The restrooms and washroom facilities are available here.

Even though cameras are allowed inside, photography and videography is prohibited inside the Quran Section.

Also you must keep in mind that tripods are not allowed inside the palace.

The canteen here is small but it is good for quick bites. So you can get some refreshment there.

The Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad also won the UNESCO Asia Pacific Merit Award in 2010 for conserving the cultural heritage of the region. Bara Imam: Used as the administrative wing of the palace, Bara Imam today stands adorned with different rooms and a long corridor. Khilwat Mubarak: Located at the center of the Chowmahalla Palace, Khilwat Mubarak used to be the seat of the rulers during the Asaf Jahi dynasty. The Durbar Hall here is adorned with spectacular pillars and is home to the Royal Seat which is also known as the Takht-e-Nishan. Both court and important ceremonies used to be organized here. Roshan Bangla: Believed to be named after Roshan Begum, this exquisite structure used to be home to the 6th Nizam.

The construction of the palace was initiated in the year 1750 by Nizam Salabhat Jung but it was Nizam Afzar-ud-Dawla Bahadur who saw that the palace was completed between the years 1857 and 1869. Originally, the palace covered 45 acres from Laad Bazaar on the north to Aspan Chowk Road which is on the south. The Chowmohalla complex is a replica of Shah’s Palace in Teheran, Iran. Southern Courtyard is the oldest part of the complex. It comprises of four graceful palaces Tahniyat Mahal, Mahtab Mahal, Afzal Mahal, and Aftab Mahal. Chowmohalla Palace This can be gauged from the fact that once it was called the heart of Hyderabad, it is highly respected by the people of Hyderabad, as it used to be the seat of the Asaf Jahi Empire. The beautiful palace was constructed between 1857-1895 during the reign of the fifth Nizam of Hyderabad i.e. Afzal-ud-Daulah and Asaf Jahan V.

This palace is a unique palace in the whole of India for its amazing style, carvings and grandeur. Decorated with huge pillars, this Durbar Hall is made of pure marble, on which the royal throne Takht-e-Nishan is also built.

The palace was actually built on 45 acres (1,80,000 m), but today only 12 acres (49,000 m) remain. The palace is also known for its attractive structural design. It consists of two courtyards, lush gardens And there are great fountains. Intricately carved designs adorn the entire palace.

The timings of the palace are from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on all days except Fridays and national holidays . The ticket counter will close at 5:00 p.m. Visitors are requested to vacate the palace premises by 5:30 p.m. Shooting / Filming/ Videography is strictly prohibited within the premises of the Palace.

CHOWMAHALLA PALACE

Built between 1857 and 1869 in Hyderabad, the Chowmahalla Palace is almost 200 years old and was once the official seat of the Asaf Jahi dynasty. Now, it is one of the major tourist destinations in Hyderabad, and is known for its magnificent architecture and awe-inspiring beauty. For history and art lovers, the palace is an unmissable destination, what with its historical significance and rich heritage.

The name of the palace literally means “Four Palaces”. Chow means four and Mahalat is the plural of Mahalel, which means palaces in Urdu. The magnificent palace acted as the official residence of many Nizams of Hyderabad during the time they ruled the city, and people often say that it resembles the Shah Palace in Tehran, in Iran. 

The palace grounds are massive, and it has two huge courtyards with a magnificent dining hall which is known as Khilawat. The palace is still registered as the property of Barkat Ali Khan Mukarram Jah, who is considered as the heir of Nizams. Chowmahalla Palace was decorated with the Asia Pacific Merit award in 2010 by UNESCO.

One of the most impressive things about the palace is its imposing architecture. The façade is made of an intricate network of beautiful domes, large windows, dramatic arches and delicately carved out designs. The palace construction started in 1750, under the orders of Salabat Jung, and the whole complex was finished during the reign of Afzal ad Dawlah, Asaf Jah V, who was the fifth Nizam of Hyderabad and ensured the construction completed in 1969.

After its construction was finished, the palace became the main residence of the Nawabs of Hyderabad. They started holding royal court at the palace soon, and the center for all major tournaments and activities related to the Nizam rule. Festivals and ceremonies were held in the Chowmahalla palace on a regular basis, and the Nizam hosted several welcome parties here for his esteemed guests.

The palace was also used as a stopover for Grand Khilafat, and would often be used as a guesthouse by other royal family members. It is said that the architecture, design, and layout of the palace is heavily influenced by Juveria Khan Rahimullah.

How To Reach

Although the palace can be visited throughout the year, as it is open everyday except Fridays and national holidays, we recommend planning your visit during the spring months, that is, between July and October. This is because the weather is much more pleasant during this time and you will be able to witness the beauty of the lush green palace gardens in their full glory during these months.

During the summer months, that is, between April and June, the weather gets quite hot and it will become extremely comfortable to take long walks in the halls and gardens of the palace. You can certainly plan your visit during winters, but the gardens won’t be in bloom during this time.

That is why we recommend checking out the palace during the spring season.

Entry fee :  The fee is only INR 80 per person if they are of the Indian nationality, but for foreigners, the fee is INR 200 per person. The fee for children is only INR 10.   Note :  It should be noted that photography and videography is not allowed in the Quran section of the palace, even if you have paid the extra prices.

Visitor's Facility :  There are many facilities available within the palace grounds. Restrooms are clean and dry, and available for both men and women. There is a small canteen offering some delicious and healthy snacks, and there are also some benches in the park that have been strategically places so that the visitors can take a break from all the walking around. Additionally, the compound itself is quite clean and well-maintained. 

Parking Facility : The Chowmahalla palace complex has plenty of facilities for its visitors. Specifically, when it comes to parking, the palace complex has a huge open area right as you enter the main gate. This entire area can be used for parking your vehicles.

Architecture of Chowmahalla Palace

The palace is inclusive of two courtyards, and they are divided into northern and southern wings, the four palaces are located in the southern courtyard. 

The palace architecture is heavily inspired by Persian and Rajasthani elements, and also offers a unique blend of Indo-Saracenic and European motifs. The original palace grounds were spread over a vast 45 acres, but now it is limited to 12 acres. The northern courtyard of the palace is open to the public, and features the administrative wing, the Bara Imam corridor. This courtyard also has another magnificent structure, the Shishe-Alat, which was used as a guesthouse for received nobility back in the day.

The heart of the palace is known as Khilawat Mubarak, and it is the most illustrious portion of this building. With imposing arches, dramatic Mughal domes, and Persian sculpting – the Durbar hall is a true masterpiece in architecture. Inside the hall, there is a platform made of marble on which the royal seat, called Takht-e-Nishan was laid down. 

Structures inside Chowmahalla Palace

Here are the most important structures inside the northern courtyard of the palace:

1. Khilwat Mubarak –  The hall at Khilwat houses the royal seat of the house of Nizam, also known as Takht-e-Nishan. The royal proceedings of the Nizam court would also take place here. Nowadays, the hall houses a number of Belgian chandeliers.

2. Clock Tower –  Featuring the Khilwat Clock that has been running for the last 251 years, the clock tower’s upkeep is under the guidance of an army of clock mechanics who keep the clock running.

3. Council Hall –  You will find a huge collection of manuscripts and books in the Council hall. The hall acted as a destination for the Nizam to host any visitors or important dignitaries, but now it hosts a collection of relics from the palace collection. 

4. Bara Imam –  This is a long corridor with rooms that overlook the fountains, pools, and gardens of the palace. Located in the northern courtyard, this place used to serve as a guesthouse.

Walk from charminar to chowmahalla, hyderabad.

“Kasam Hyderabad Ke Charminaran Ki” is what kept resonating in my head as I was walking around Charminar the signature monument of the city of Hyderabad. This is a dialogue that was made famous by the famous comedian Mehmood. And was also my first linkage to the language of Hyderabad, a dialect of Hindustani. As I walked around, I also felt a sense of Dejavu as the place is so similar in its character to Delhi’s Chandni Chowk . The bustling markets, the heritage buildings on every nook and corner, the chaos and food all around, they all sounded so familiar. Come on let’s go on a Charminar to Chowmahalla Hyderabad City walking tour.

Charminar to Chowmahalla Hyderabad City Walking Tour

Charminar simply translated means four minarets. I wonder if this was the original name of the building or if it became its name by word of mouth. The four-story building with arched gates in all four directions, built with lime and mortar stands tall with four lanes emanating out of it in all four directions. Literature tells me that it was built as a memorial mosque after the city got rid of the epidemic plague. The mosque wall is on the second floor which is now not open to the public. But you are allowed to go to the first-floor balcony after taking about 50 steps on a narrow round staircase. From here you can see all the important landmarks of Hyderabad.

You can see the Golconda fort on the distant hillock. Qutub Shahi tombs are just by its side. And you can see the Falaknuma Palace which has now been converted into a hotel again higher than the rest of the city. You can see the High court building and the Chowmahalla palace along with various other domes popping out here and there. The best view is that of the streets radiating out of the monument and the top view of the street markets. Standing here you feel to be in the center of the city with the ability to see anything from there. If you have a building like this why would you need jarring technologies like CCTV cameras?

The building has been repaired many times and at present, it looks decently preserved. It is said that a secret passage connects Charminar to Golconda fort. There is also a small temple on the side of Charminar.

Mecca Masjid

On one corner of Charminar is Mecca Masjid, probably the biggest and one of the oldest mosques in South India. As you enter the mosque you see a long rectangular corridor with a series of graves both male and female. One of them is covered in green cloth indicating the grave of a saint. The graves belong to the royal family of the Asaf Jahi dynasty and anyone around here would tell you which grave belongs to whom. Though there is no way you can verify what they tell you. The main structure of the mosque is supposed to have been made from bricks baked from the soil brought from Mecca. Hence the mosque gets its name. Four bulky minarets stand on the corners of the building.

Though in the olden days, people would have gone on top of the minarets. Rather that was one of the purposes of the minarets around mosques was to announce the Namaz times. Today with loudspeakers, this purpose no longer exists. And because of other risks, climbing on minarets is not allowed. Though in Jama Masjid in Delhi, you are allowed to climb the minaret and get a bird’s eye view of the city. In the courtyard of the mosque, there is a huge stone cup carved out of a single stone. And along with it, there is a large bench in black granite. Legend is that if you sit on this bench you would come back to sit on it again.

There is another funny anecdote that was told to me by a kid who chose to share some Hyderabad stories with us. On the back wall of the mosque, on a particular brick, you can see a human face with no nose. The stories are that while a man was trying to steal something from the mosque he got stuck here with his nose chopped off. Sadly, women are not allowed inside the mosque but they can sneak in from the arches and the side opening.

Chandeliers

There are huge chandeliers that are hanging from the ceiling of the mosque. But they were all covered with a thick cloth and the mosque overall looked pretty bland. I was told that the chandeliers are opened and lighted only once a year. And one of them is supposed to have a big diamond inside it. You can sit around the mosque and see the families coming there, some praying, some eating, and some socializing. And some just enjoy the bit of open space in the crowded surroundings.

Opposite the Mecca Masjid is an Unani hospital built in a composite architectural style in pale pink color. It is a fairly large building with large domes surrounded by smaller around them.

Laad Bazaar

From here walk into the lane called Laad Bazaar or the Bangle market. Laad in the local language, means lacquer, a key material used to make colorful bangles. The lane shines and shimmers with the colors of bangles, Jewelry, and the bright and heavily embroidered clothes that it sells. Though I visited on Sunday when all the shops were not open. I still got a good view of the colors all around. A melting point for women who would love to shop the clothes and matching accessories to dress themselves up for any occasion. Walk through this bustling street to see women buying these items, trying them, checking them out, matching them, choosing them, and finally bargaining for them. It may be difficult to decide if clothes or women are shining more.

Chowmahalla Palace

The street would lead you to the Chowmahalla Palace, one of the must-see places in Hyderabad. Though not many people seem to have visited it. Like Charminar, this palace also gets its composite name from the four palaces that it houses within its complex. The palace complex is divided into two parts northern and southern. While the former has the four Palaces the latter has the public buildings, a durbar hall called Khilwat, a clock tower, and a council hall. Khilwat is flanked by long corridors on both sides that also house a row of small rooms along the periphery. And a huge water body with fountains in the middle of the courtyard.

Khilwat Mahal

The Khilwat Mahal seems to be the durbar hall where the seat of the Nizam has been kept intact even today. The high roofs of the building have many chandeliers made with Belgian glass hanging down from them. The arches, the ceiling panels, and the walls have been elaborately decorated in the Deccani style in a pleasant beige and white color. My hunch is that the original color may have been a brighter shade of yellow, as that was the color of the dynasty that ruled from here. The rooms around the main hall now hold exhibits like old maps, palkis, currency notes and coins, armor, biographies of the seven Nizams, and stories of the dynasty.

Furniture & Artifacts

Rooms on the first floor exhibit the furniture and artifacts from Nizam’s collection. You get another view of the durbar hall from this level, especially the chandeliers. An interesting anecdote talks about the meeting of the first Nizam with Hazrat Nizamuddin who gave him a bunch of Kulchas but the Nizam kept only seven of them. The saint then wrapped the seven Kulchas in a yellow cloth on which was written a spiritual message. And prophesized that his rule will last for seven generations. Apparently, this came out to be true as it was during the rule of the 7th Nizam that the state of Hyderabad accessed the Union of India.

Now the confusion I have is that Hazrat Nizammudin lived centuries before the era of Nizam, so how did they meet? Was it a dream that Nizam had or was it a different saint with the same name?

Aftab Mahal, Afzal Mahal, Tahniyat Mahal & Mahtab Mahal

The Northern part of Chowmahalla has four palaces called Aftab Mahal, Afzal Mahal, Tahniyat Mahal, and Mahtab Mahal. These palaces are arranged not so symmetrically on four sides of a central garden. Two of these belonged to the women of the palace. Chowmahalla has been recently restored and some Palaces are still under restoration. One palace now exhibits the textiles and costumes of the Nizam era. The exhibits have been designed and displayed very well but the light plays the spoilsport. The exhibits in showcases are completely blinded by the bright sunlight that falls on the glass. All that visitors can see is their own shadow and clicking pictures is simply out of the question.

Vintage Cars

The same story repeats at the display of royal vintage cars (that include a restored bright yellow Rolls Royce) and bikes that have been exhibited in the backyard of the palace.

Vintage Clock

Another palace has the biggest attraction of the monument. The mechanical clock has more than 20 movements in sync with each other. Like a Khaleefa smoking a hookah and moving his head, his attendants fanning him and curtains going up and down. Every hour an attendant comes out and beats the gongs corresponding to the hour. For maximum fun, you should be in the museum at 12 Noon so that you can hear maximum beats. The clock also has an inbuilt piano, though I am not sure how that plays. The clock was manufactured in the late 18th century in England and continues to work to date. All it needs is a mechanical winding once a week. A giant first-generation radio that still works is also on the display.

Everywhere in this palace, chandeliers are worth noticing. Most of them are in a white crystal or cut glass. But there are interesting ones in green with golden work on them and one with almost colors on it. I wish there was a map showing the various parts of the palace. Or there was a small booklet explaining the history and stories of the palace and the people who lived there.

Being a vegetarian I could not experience much food in this area. But some of the sweets being sold were as colorful as the ambiance around. There were many shops selling Ittar or perfumed oil made from various flowers. Multiple oils are mixed in various proportions to create new fragrances. Ittar somehow adds to the character of the place.
