Grace Period for UAE visitors
Updated June 14 th , 2023
Is that true all UAE visitors get 10 days free grace period? No, The UAE immigration authority has recently eliminated the grace period for prepaid visit visas, which used to be granted for a duration of 10 days. Instead, prepaid visa holders now have the option of choosing either a 30-day or 60-day visa. When you reach the completion of chosen visa duration, we are urging you to exit, extend or do Airport to airport visa change or boarder run & get an express visa to avoid overstaying fines or absconding
Read Arabiers types of visas in UAE page for a better explanation of the different UAE visitor types. The different categories of 30 days on arrival visitors, 90 days on arrival visitors and prepaid visa visitors. A complementary 10 day grace period is given only to 30 days on arrival visitors and prepaid visa visitors. The 90 days on arrival visitors don't get a 10 day grace period because they get a multiple entry visa that is valid for a span of 6 months and permits a total stay of 90 days in UAE.
Usually, individuals visiting UAE who pre-book their return ticket to produce as proof to the immigration cannot include this 10 day grace period in their stay duration as some countries don't approve of this.
Example : You have successfully received a 30 day single entry visa to UAE and are planning to fly from Johannesburg airport to UAE. At Johannesburg airport immigration they will verify the visa, then check your entry flight and exit flight date to calculate your stay duration. Your stay duration has to be 30 days or less, it can't be 40 days. After entering UAE and you feel like you need a few more days in UAE for work or holiday you can extend your flight to the 40th day. To get the accurate date of your final exit date use the UAE visa days calculator. This calculator will save you from making any miscalculation which will result in overstaying and paying fines.
In the situation of UAE residence visa holder who cancelled their visa, they are given a 30 day grace period.
Prepaid visa holders.
If you hold an Abu Dhabi visa make sure to calculate your last stay date by visiting the smart services ICA Government site. If you are a Dubai visa holder then drop by the general Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs Dubai site. You can check this by inputting your passport and visa details.
Stop by at any of the many Amer service centers to receive your certificate for entry or exit. You can also check the smart services ICA Government site.
Even after taking your 10 day grace period, you still need more time, you can always take a visa extension. Usually visa extensions take anywhere between 2 to 3 working days. So only 30 days on-arrival visa holders can do this during their grace period, while prepaid visa holders and others need to be done this process before their visa period expire.
A on arrival 30 days visa.
If you hold a passport belonging to any of the countries stated below then you will be stamped with a 30 day free visit visa on arrival at the UAE airport or any other entry point. You will also receive a 10 day grace period. If you wish to extend, use the 10 day grace period duration to apply for a new 30 day extension via any tourism firm or Amer center. This will give you a total of 60 days in the UAE. For instance, if you choose to extend for an additional 30 days but have already used 5 of your 10 day grace period, you will get an additional 25 days from your new visa totaling to a stay of 60 days. If you prefer to do an Oman visa run you will get an extra 30 days. Additionally, 30 day on arrival visa countries are eligible to apply for a 90 days prepaid visa before arriving in the UAE via any tourism firm or after entering the UAE.The cost of this 90 day prepaid visa is 750 AED if applied before arriving in the UAE or 2300 AED if applied after entering in UAE.
If you hold a passport belonging to any of these countries you will be stamped with a 90 day multiple entry visa upon arrival at any UAE airport or other entry points. This visa is valid for use through a duration of 6 months from the date of issue and allows the holder to stay for a total of 90 days in UAE. Citizens from European countries mentioned in the below list can also apply for a prepaid visit visa if their 90 day multiple entry on arrival visa is used up. 90 day on arrival visa holders are not given a 10 day grace period as it is a multiple entry visa. You can obtain a prepaid visit visa by doing an Oman visa run or opting for without exiting in side country visa change.
Majority of Asian, African and certain European countries must apply for a prepaid UAE visit visa. Depending on the individual's travel plan they can choose between a single entry or Multiple entry prepaid visa.
When you have single entry visa you will get 10 days grace period where you can use that to stay more or if you want to stay more you can extend it. You have multiple options to extend it. Airport to airport visa change, visa change by bus, inside country visa.
When you have multiple entry visa you will not get 10 days grace period. You have multiple options to extend it.
Make sure to read all about UAE visa extensions options in our explanatory guide to educate yourself about the specifics and the recent updates.
Overstaying fines are charged when a visitor overstays exceeding the grace period. In such circumstances the said individual will be fined and has to settle this fine before leaving UAE. The charges are:
If the person overstaying is a former UAE resident with a cancelled resident visa, the grace period is 30 days after visa expiry to either apply for a new residence visa or exit the country. During the grace period no fines will be charged. If the individual overstays after the 30 day grace period then they also have to settle the fines as above.
Will i receive a free grace period of 3 months during the corona period. will i be fined.
As per the UAE government any individual staying with an expired visit/tourist visa or resident visa will not need to pay any overstaying fines for 3 months. (Source: Gulf news)
It's not possible to extend your grace period however if you are unable to exit the country even after the grace period is over, you can request the UAE immigration or your country embassy to request for a waive in fines until you settle something. (Source: Gulf news)
Main Points
Overstay fines apply to any foreigner on tourist/visit visa or residence visa. The overstay fine for both categories are different.
In a recent development, the grace period for visit visas issued in Dubai has been eliminated, according to information provided by travel agents. Previously, visitors on visit visas in Dubai were granted a 10-day grace period after the visa’s expiration to exit the country. However, starting from May 15, 2023, this grace period no longer applies, and visitors must now leave the country before their visas expire to avoid overstay fines.
The duration of stay for visit visas, which can be either 30 days or 60 days depending on the type of visa, is now strictly enforced from the date of entry. Fines for overstaying are calculated immediately after the visa expires.
Previously, the grace period was automatically added to the visa’s duration upon entry into the country. However, this grace period is no longer included, and visitors must depart before the visa’s last day. Travel agents now advise visitors to be aware of their visa’s validity and ensure timely departure to avoid penalties.
How to calculate overstay fine for uae visit or tourist visa.
If a tourist or a visitor overstays beyond the expiry of the visa period, you will start to incur fines, that gradually increase as the overstay increases:
Total Fine for overstaying on visit visa or tourist visa= AED 200 for the first day + AED 50 * consequent days of overstay + AED 100 service fee
In the case if you are on a UAE residence visa or on employment visa and your visa is cancelled or expired you have 30 days’ grace period after visa expiry or cancellation to either amend their status and get another residence visa or leave the country. During the grace period of 30 days you will not incur any fines.
If you overstay after the grace period, you will be fined with
Total Fine for overstaying on residence visa= AED 125 for the first day + AED 50 * number of days up to six months + AED 50 * number of days from six months to a year + AED 100 * consequent days.
In the past, travel agents were responsible for reporting overstayers and facing penalties on their behalf. However, under the new regulations, visitors will have to pay fines themselves before leaving the country. Overstaying a visit visa is considered a serious offense and can result in travelers being stopped at immigration counters in airports.
Overstay fines for each day of exceeding the visa’s validity period are set at Dh50, along with additional charges and exit permits.
Visitors who have overstayed their visas can pay the fines online through the Federal Authority For Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security website before heading to the airport. Alternatively, they can pay the fines in person at the airport’s immigration counter.
It is crucial for visitors to stay informed about their visa’s expiry date and ensure they depart the country before the visa expires to avoid any complications or penalties.

The GCC Grand Tours visa will allow tourists to spend more than 30 days in the region
Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE Minister of Economy, unveiled plans for the introduction of the ‘GCC Grand Tours’ visa, a unified Gulf tourist visa, during the Arabian Travel Market’s (ATM) opening day.
“In a significant move aimed at simplifying travel logistics and fostering tourism, the Gulf Cooperation Council has given the green light to a unified tourist visa that will allow travellers to visit all six countries,” stated Al Marri.
The GCC Grand Tours visa will allow tourists to spend more than 30 days in the region. According to the minister, this will make travel to the region more convenient and affordable for tourists. It will also increase activity and employment numbers in the region, he added.
While an official rollout date was not provided, Khalid Jasim Al Midfa of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Authority indicated that the system should be operational by the end of 2024.
“By the end of this year, the whole system should be in place. Many people and teams, led by the Ministry of Economy in the UAE and other ministries in other countries, are working on it tirelessly to make it happen in the best possible way, emphasising digital transformation,” said Al Midfa.
Al Midfa highlighted the collaborative efforts among ministries to ensure a seamless and digitally transformed visa system.

Economic impact and tourism growth
Al Marri emphasised the economic significance of tourism. The minister cited the World Travel and Tourism Council’s (WTTC) research and stated that travel and tourism contributed 11.7 per cent to the UAE’s GDP last year, amounting to Dhs220bn.
“The forecast is set even higher, with an anticipated contribution of 12 per cent to our GDP, equating to Dh236bn,” he added.
“I believe that our regional ambitions should not be to recover to pre-pandemic benchmarks but exceed them merely,” said Al Marri.
Benefits and prospects
The ‘GCC Grand Tours’ visa aims to simplify travel logistics, making tourism within the GCC more accessible and cost-effective for visitors. This initiative is expected to boost tourist activity and create employment opportunities across the region.
The introduction of the unified visa system underscores the GCC’s commitment to promoting tourism and economic growth, positioning the region as a leading tourist destination on the global stage.

The Gulf countries’ Schengen-like visa is coming by the end of 2024. The region’s tourism leaders say it will be a game-changer for Middle East travel.
The GCC includes Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman.
T he head of Saudi Arabian tourism wants Taylor Swift to bring her tour to the Middle East. Of course he does; Swift’s Eras tour has a proven track record of boosting economies wherever it goes.
But attracting major events like a Swift tour will require regional cooperation, Fahd Hamidaddin, CEO of the Saudi Tourism Authority, said on Monday at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM). “I f we want to get the Taylor Swifts of the world, we can collaborate, with a view to an ‘Arabian tour’ ,” he told attendees.
Hamidaddin was touting the rollout of the region’s upcoming “unified GCC visa,” a travel permit similar to Europe’s Schengen visa that will allow more than 30 consecutive days of inter-country travel throughout the six Gulf Cooperation Council member nations: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman. While no date has been announced, officials say the visa is expected to launch by the end of 2024.
“In a significant move aimed at simplifying travel logistics and fostering tourism, the Gulf Cooperation Council has given the green light to a unified tourist visa that will allow travelers to visit all six countries,” said Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE’s economy minister, noting plans to incorporate month-long “grand packages” in the marketing mix.
The visa is expected to be a boon for the region’s cruise industry, since cruise passengers will no longer have to apply for visas for each port of call. “I happen to also sit on the board of Cruise Saudi, and we are investing big on cruise ships as well as ports and cruise terminals,” Hamidaddin said. “We can easily see a big shift from Med to Red.”
It’s difficult to overstate the Middle East’s tourism ambitions or the speed at which the region has become a power player in the global travel arena. Consider the rise of Dubai, a city-state in the United Arab Emirates that’s roughly the size of Jacksonville, Florida, which now has more hotel rooms than Las Vegas.
Saudi Arabia, closed off to leisure tourists until just five years ago, is now awash with a staggering $800 billion in tourism investment . In February, the kingdom hit a major milestone, having attracted 100 million tourist visits seven years ahead of schedule.
Last year was a record-breaker for tourist arrivals in Qatar—a feat considering that the tiny nation had just hosted the FIFA World Cup the previous year, an event that, by the way, left a handful of stadiums ideal for giant concerts.
The tourism ministers of GCC members hope to the unified visa will both streamline travel red tape and encourage travelers to stay longer and travel wider while in the Gulf region, thus boosting their respective and collective economies.

As demand surges, Indians prefer destinations about 5 hours away
Dubai: How do you tap the tourism potential of Indian travelers?
The fifth largest economy in the world, India is home to 1.44 billion people - and 27.3 million people travelled out of the country in 2023. That number is expected to reach 30 million this year, which is why there’s so much interest in Indian tourists. And became a talking point at the Arabian Travel Market on Monday.
At the session – ‘Unlocking the true potential of Indian travelers – the moderator Virendra Jain, co-founder and CEO of Videc, set the ball rolling, saying that the Indian travel market is a $49 billion opportunity that is estimated to grow to $72 billion by FY-2026, driven mainly by a young and digitally-savvy population.
Jain said: “India right now has 93 million active passports. 14 million of them were issued in 2023, seven times the number of passports India issued in 2000, which is symbolic of the upward trajectory of travellers coming from India.”
Jain was joined by Ross Veitch, CEO and co-founder of Wego, Raj Rishi Singh, CMO and CBO-Coporate of MakeMyTrip, and Ankur Garg, Chief Commercial Officer of Air India Express.
At the end of 50 minutes, they were sure that the profile of Indian travellers had changed, with leisure and tourism forming a critical avenue for spending.
One uniform observation was the preference of Indians for destinations that require only five hours of flying time. That makes the UAE a destination of choice, and Dubai is seen more like a domestic destination.
How do you attract the Indian tourist? Five ways, maybe.
Cheap and easy visas, affordability, direct flights and payment systems are among the factors travellers take into account before deciding on a destination.
Veitch insisted that the visa regime is a critical factor in attracting Indian travellers. A Schengen visa will take 30 days, if you are lucky, and a US visa appointment would take up to 365 days, he said.
“The best thing you could do if you want to stimulate this market is to rationalise your visa policies,” Veitch added.
Garg concurred, saying visa policies do matter. “The visa cost starts having a lot of product impact. We have seen countries with visas on arrival and countries where the visa cost is low. When the international destination is cheaper or at par with the domestic destinations, the decision will depend on the ease of getting the visa and the cost of visa,” the Air India Express official said.
What spurs Indians to travel abroad? Veitch says income is one of the main drivers.
“More than 50 million households in India are on more than $10,000 a month today. That number is growing at a rapid pace, and in another four years, it will add another 30 million households.
“So, with overall incomes going up, the number of people who can afford to travel outside is also going up.”
Garg said Indian travellers no longer come from only the metros but also from smaller cities around the country. “From Amritsar Jaipur, Lucknow, Varanasi, Indore and Goa, we have seen that kind of traffic in the last two to three years. I feel that a lot of growth is going to come from having non-stop connectivity from the next set of towns and cities in India to international destinations,” the chief commercial officer of Air India Express said.
Even the pattern of travel has changed. Rishi Singh pointed out that Indians now readily opt for weekend travel.
“Earlier, the Indian scenario was one long and one short vacation. This changed to multiple short vacations, and at times people skip long vacations. And so I think it’s affordability and how fast you can reach that place [decides the destination],” the MakeMyTrip official said.
Rishi Singh said one of their surveys showed that 85 per cent of the respondents were first-time outbound travellers, which translates into 27 million outbound passengers.
Earlier, the Indian scenario was one long and one short vacation. This changed to multiple short vacations... - Raj Rishi Singh of MakeMyTrip
“When you are travelling internationally, there is this external anxiety, especially if you’re a first-time traveller. So it’s important to have someone to support you during the journey. So we’ve been trying to build journeys, both through digital and otherwise, where we deal away with this insanity,” the MakeMyTrip official said.
Jain noted that the payment system is one area that requires more attention. “Founded in 2016, UPI in 2022 accounted for six times the value of transactions compared to debit and credit cards combined [in India]. It’s way ahead in growth right now; there are seven countries that accept UPI as a payment mechanism,” he said.
“Travel is a lifestyle revenue that grows as the economy grows. So, there’s a correlation between outbound departure and GDP per capita. There is a very clear trend over 30 years as the per capita income has grown, and so have the outbound departure numbers,” Jain added.
“The Indian government is doing the right things, from a macroeconomic point of view, to sustain the sort of growth needed to drive this sort of outbound numbers,” Veitch said.
