Van Conversion Guide , Van Electrics

last updated: Oct 2, 2023

Even a small amount of research into the world of leisure batteries will leave you frazzled. There are many types, sizes and considerations when choosing your batteries. Our guide below simplifies this for you.

Battery technology is developing faster than you can imagine. Batteries are becoming lighter, more powerful, and their life cycles are ever-increasing.

What is the best type of battery for a van conversion?

There are a few key fundamentals when it comes to leisure batteries that are worth understanding before you proceed with which type and size battery is best for you.

van travel battery

1. Depth of discharge

The first being depth of discharge (DOD) . Depth of discharge is how far a battery can be discharged relative to its capacity. Different batteries have different depth of discharge ratings, some batteries can be discharged further than others.

We recommend that you always use a battery monitoring system, such as the Victron BMV range, to accurately determine the depth of discharge of your battery. Not only do the battery management devices monitor DOD, they also give you an array of information regarding your battery. Once setup correctly these monitors become extremely useful in your tiny build and help prolong the life of your batteries.

2. State of charge (SOC)

A battery’s state of charge is simply the amount of charge within the battery.

A fully charged battery would be 100% SOC whilst an empty battery would be 0% SOC.

The state of charge is the inverse of the depth of discharge. Put another way, if a battery is at 100% state of charge, then its depth of discharge is 0%. The opposite is also true. If a battery is 100% discharged, its state of charge is 0%.

The third fundamental is a cycle. A cycle is when the battery has been fully charged, discharged and then fully charged again. Every time it completes this circle of events, that will be considered 1 cycle. Although by completing this cycle the battery is technically ageing, it also keeps the battery active and healthy. Different batteries have different life cycles, some more than others.

The number of charge cycles a rechargeable battery can withstand before performance degrades is the method we use to measure how long our batteries will last if taken care of properly.

4. Battery Lifespan

A battery’s lifespan is a time frame given by the manufacturer which depicts how many cycles a battery can perform in a certain period of time.

Over time your battery monitoring system may tell you your system is at 100% charge but this isn’t necessarily accurate. This is a depletion in its lifespan, the battery will take longer to charge and be quicker to discharge in some circumstances.

Batteries coming to the end of their lifespan also struggle to hold a charge, so if everything is turned off in your tiny build and the battery is struggling to hold a healthy voltage you know your batteries are on their way out. If we look after our batteries, connect them in the correct way and use the correct equipment to charge them they will live long and prosper!

5. Battery Capacity: The Basics

Battery capacity refers to the amount of energy a battery can store and deliver. It is typically measured in ampere-hours (Ah) or milliampere-hours (mAh). A higher capacity generally means the battery can store more energy and run appliances for a longer time before needing a recharge. In the context of leisure batteries, capacity is a key factor in determining how long you can power your devices away from a main power source.

Common Leisure Battery Capacities

Leisure batteries come in various capacities to cater to different needs and usage scenarios. Here are some common capacities you might encounter:

  • 100Ah to 150Ah: These batteries are suitable for light to moderate use, such as powering small appliances, and lights, and charging electronic devices. They are often used in smaller campervans or for short weekend trips.
  • 150Ah to 200Ah: Batteries in this range offer a balance between capacity and portability. They are capable of powering larger appliances like fridges and televisions for a reasonable amount of time. These batteries are often found in medium-sized campervans, caravans, and boats.
  • 200Ah and above: High-capacity batteries are designed for extended off-grid trips and heavy power demands. They can handle running multiple appliances simultaneously, making them suitable for larger campervans, motorhomes, and boats with higher energy needs.

Choosing the Right Capacity

Selecting the appropriate leisure battery capacity depends on several factors:

  • Usage Intensity: Consider the number and type of devices you’ll be running. Appliances like refrigerators and air conditioning units require more power than lights and phone chargers.
  • Trip Duration: If you’re planning short trips, a lower-capacity battery might suffice. For longer excursions, a higher-capacity battery ensures you won’t run out of power unexpectedly.
  • Recharge Opportunities: Will you have access to charging points along the way? If so, a lower-capacity battery might work, as you can recharge frequently. Otherwise, a higher-capacity battery offers more independence.
  • Budget and Weight: Higher-capacity batteries tend to be more expensive and heavier. Consider your budget and the weight limits of your vehicle or vessel.

6. The Difference in Performance

The difference in performance between various leisure battery capacities lies in their endurance and power output. A higher-capacity battery can sustain power-hungry appliances for a longer time, while a lower-capacity battery might require more frequent recharges or careful power management. Additionally, larger-capacity batteries usually have a longer lifespan due to their ability to handle deeper discharges without significant harm to their overall health. They also tend to support more charge/discharge cycles compared to their smaller counterparts.

How can you increase the life of your batteries?

Once you begin to understand how different factors impact your battery’s life cycle, it becomes clearer how you can increase your battery’s life. Following some simple “best practices” can help you get the most out of your battery, regardless of whether it’s a lead-acid or lithium-ion battery.

Best Practice 1 : As much as possible, use your battery in moderate temperatures. Of course, this may not always be possible but if you can keep your batteries in moderate temperatures this can have a dramatic effect on its life cycles. The optimal temperature for most batteries is between 20 – 25 degrees centigrade. Lithium-ion batteries are particularly sensitive to discharging and charging in colder weather. To get around this you can surround your batteries with heat pads to keep them warm and operating efficiently.

Best Practice 2: If you have a lead-acid battery (FLA, AGM, GEL) ensure that you minimise how often you discharge the battery below 50% of its capacity. Ideally, the depth of discharge on each cycle should be between 10% and 50%. If you have a lithium battery, you can likely go down to 80% DOD and, in some cases, 100% DOD. Refer to your battery manufacturer’s recommendations to be safe.

Best Practice 3: If you have a flooded lead-acid battery, make sure to keep the electrolyte solution topped up.

Best Practice 4: Ensure you use the correct charging equipment for your batteries. Better yet, ensure the charging equipment that you are using has the correct charge parameters for your battery type. These parameters vary from battery type to battery type and need to be done correctly. This is something that we, at Tiny Build Electrics, can help you with.

Different Types of Battery for Van Conversions

Choosing your batteries is something you want to get right, after all, no one wants to be sat in the dark sipping warm beers, right?!

Understanding the types of batteries available, the capacity you need for your van lifestyle, the relative cost and how to take care of them will help when it comes to choosing the best camper van batteries for you.

The four battery types we will be considering are:

  • Flooded Lead Acid batteries (FLA)
  • Gel batteries (GEL)
  • Absorbed Glass Mat batteries (AGM)
  • Lithium-ion batteries (LiFePO4)

Each type has a different make-up and because of this performs differently under different conditions.

Flood Lead Acid (FLA) Batteries

Flood lead-acid batteries consist of two lead plates, one positively charged, and the other negative. The battery is then flooded with a liquid electrolyte, sulphuric acid which covers all internal parts. When charging commences the acid and lead plates react to store electricity.

  • Resilient to occasional overcharging
  • Proven technology
  • Lifespan can be 4-8 years with regular maintenance and careful charging
  • Less susceptible to temperature differences
  • As the batteries age the performance will degrade to the point where the battery won’t hold a charge
  • Should be stored inside an enclosure (battery box)
  • The battery can only be drained to a maximum DOD of 50%, otherwise, you’re likely to incur damage.
  • Must be vented in an enclosed area as some FLA batteries will emit gases.
  • Stricter regulations on how FLA batteries are fitted and how close they are installed to inverters and chargers.
  • Require regular maintenance

Gel Batteries

Gel batteries use the same technology as FLA but instead of liquid acid, they are filled with Gel.

Gel batteries gives us more advantages than FLA as you will see below.

  • Doesn’t emit any nasty gases
  • Sealed so can’t leak or produce any gas
  • Maintenance free
  • Operates in a wider array of temperatures than AGMS.
  • Ideal for vans that are stored over winter and not used for long periods of time
  • Very sensitive to depth of discharge
  • Do not recover well from a low DOD
  • More expensive than conventional FLA and AGM

Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) Batteries

AGM batteries work in a similar manner to FLA and Gel.

Instead of acid or gel they have electrolyte-soaked glass fibres between the positive and negative plates.

  • Long shelf life
  • Can be installed sideways as it is a sealed unit and cannot leak (unless damaged)
  • Smaller than the conventional Gel equivalent
  • More expensive than FLA
  • Heavy
  • Poor performance in colder temperatures

Lithium LiFePO4 / Lithium-ion / Li-ion Batteries

The famous lithium-ion battery. If you have done any sort of research on van conversions or off-grid systems then it is highly likely you have come across the lithium battery, currently at the top end of the battery technology market. This is a battery you should be considering for your build, there’s just one downside… £££!

  • 30% lighter than FLA, GEL & AGM
  • Smaller frame size than FLA, GEL & AGM
  • 90% of their capacity is usable meaning you need less battery for the same amp hours as FLA, GEL & AGM
  • Low internal impedance (resistance) means these batteries also charge a lot quicker than the other types of batteries.
  • Can be installed in various orientations
  • Maintenance Free
  • Long life cycles if charged and discharged in accordance with manufacturer instructions
  • Very sensitive to charging in low temperatures
  • Expensive, although prices have started to drop over the past few years
  • A battery management system is required to protect the lithium-ion battery bank from excessive discharging, overcharging and to control the load and balancing of each internal cell. Most of the time this system is built into the battery itself.
  • Some extra monitoring may be required such as battery temperature monitoring

Leisure Battery Price Comparison

The table above clearly shows us that whilst the lithium-ion battery is more expensive than an AGM battery, it certainly is cheaper when you consider the cost per cycle over the lifespan.  The life cycle of the lithium-ion battery is unmatched and is something to seriously consider if you want a ‘fit and forget’ electrical system in your campervan.

A case study: the effects of upgrading camper van batteries from AGM to Lithium

My friend Tom upgraded his campervan system from absorbed glass mat (AGM) to lithium-ion at the end of 2021. The main reason for this change was to save weight as he knew his self-build van conversion was starting to get heavy. He removed my AGM batteries and weighed them. Both batteries weighed in at a whopping 35kg each! 70kg of batteries being pulled around by my van. It is not only the weight though, as the absolute maximum DOD was 60% for my two x 100ah batteries which meant I only actually had 80ah of usable power.

Well, each lithium battery weighed in at… 11kg, yes… 11kg! 70kg taken out and replaced with 22kg. The weight saving was the ultimate goal but what was even better was the power upgrade. My two 100ah lithium batteries now gave me 180ah of usable power, this is because the lithium batteries can be drawn down to 10% DOD without causing any damage. (They can theoretically go to 0% but most manufacturers do not recommend this) He had literally doubled my power bank whilst saving two thirds of the weight!

Tome has not had any power worries since and because he has an electric hot water system the batteries take a beating. They cycle regularly but with a manufacture rating of over 5000 cycles this is not something he is worrying about yet either!

Can I use a vehicle engine battery as a leisure battery?

Starter batteries are the type of batteries that are used in cars, boats, lorries, buses and generators.  Starter batteries are not suitable for uses where they are discharged and then recharged again, also known as cyclical use.

They also cannot be used in connection with an inverter, although technically they can the battery’s make-up means that it will not last very long while feeding an inverter.

The reason that start batteries are not suitable for frequent deep discharging is because of the way they have been constructed. They have thin plates with a large surface area. They are designed purely for short-term high discharge currents like engine starting.

During an engine starting the battery is exposed to high current draw in a short period of time. This high current draw turns a starter motor which, in turn, causes the engine to turn over and start. It might be tempting to use start batteries in a battery bank in smaller inverter systems, but please don’t do it. It will only cause trouble in the long run.

van travel battery

If you want the cheapest method of powering your tiny build then Flood Lead Acid is for you.

These batteries are as cheap as chips and can be picked up in various frame sizes as well as Amp Hour sizes. But please note, these batteries need ventilation and you need to monitor them to ensure they do not leak. We advise against installing FLA deep in your build. They need to be installed within a battery enclosure and well vented so that should they need to vent or, worst case, leak. When they vent, FLA batteries will emit dangerous gases into your campervan or motorhome.

If you are wanting a ‘fit and forget’ system with efficiency and a long cycle life then Lithium-ion is for you.

The lithiums are expensive, but, they are slowly coming down in price due to their popularity. When you consider the price of lithium you must consider its lifecycle and DOD. Considering that an AGM battery will enter in at around 500 cycles, lithiums are 5000+ cycles. Not only will they last longer (if installed and charged correctly) they are A LOT lighter which is important when it comes to conversions such as vans, motorhomes, buses and lorries which have weight limits.

Campervan Leisure Battery

[su_divider top=”no” divider_color=”#e2e2e2″ size=”1″ margin=”30″]

Whether you plan on spending your time on campsites with full electric hook-up, or maybe you plan on going completely off-grid, having a leisure battery installed aboard your campervan is essential. This page explains everything you need to know when it comes to a leisure battery.

All 12-volt equipment aboard your campervan will ultimately rely on a leisure battery.

However, it is worth noting that batteries designed to start a vehicle are made differently to the ones specifically intended to run the appliances aboard a campervan.

Although both batteries do supply 12-volt electric power, it’s the way they do it that makes them different.

[su_divider top=”no” divider_color=”#e2e2e2″ size=”1″ margin=”60″]

What makes a leisure battery different from a car battery?

[su_note note_color=”#fafafa” text_color=”#000000″ radius=”0″]

Starter Battery (Crank)

A standard car battery, otherwise known as a crank battery, is generally designed to provide a high burst of power for a short period.  A crank battery needs to be able to provide enough power to rotate the vehicle’s engine to around 1200 rpm. The battery also needs to perform well in ambient temperatures as low as -30°C. It’s not uncommon for an engine to require 1000 amps of power just to get it going. Depending on the battery technology, If you were to take a look inside a crank battery, you would find lots of plates (these are the electrodes). Each plate gives a large surface area that allows the release of fast, high cranking currents. The more plates installed inside a crank battery, the thinner they become.

Leisure Battery (Deep Cycle)

A leisure battery, otherwise known as a deep-cycle battery has to provide a steady flow of current over a prolonged period.  Compared to a crank battery, the plates inside a deep-cycle battery do not require a high total surface area. In contrast, the plates need to be much thicker. As a result, a deep cycle battery can efficiently discharge a low, stable current over a long period. A deep cycle battery is also designed to allow hundreds of deep discharges (deep-cycles) throughout the batteries lifespan. Certain deep-cycle battery types have a depth-of-discharge (D.O.D.) rate as much as 80% before having to re-charge. [1]

Battery Technologies

When it comes to selecting what type of leisure battery to use aboard your campervan, you must first learn about the different battery technologies available.

  • Vented Lead Acid Battery (V.L.A.)
  • Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid Battery (V.R.L.A/S.L.A)
  • Lithium Battery (Li-ion)

BATTERY TECHNOLOGY 1 : V.L.A. Batteries

What is a v.l.a. battery.

The abbreviation V.L.A. stands for ‘vented lead-acid’. A V.L.A battery is a type of lead-acid battery used to store and supply power. These types of batteries are the most common type found in a campervan.

The battery itself is non-sealed, which allows both hydrogen and oxygen (a by-product produced from charging) to vent freely into the atmosphere.

[su_spacer size=”20″]

Why are V.L.A. batteries called flooded or wet batteries?

V.L.A. batteries are constructed with a lead or lead alloy substrates. They are then submerged in a reactive electrolyte solution.

As the electrolyte solution remains in a liquid state, these batteries have become known as flooded or wet batteries.

What are the main types of V.L.A. batteries available?

The primary V.L.A. leisure battery available is called an open lead-acid battery.

[/su_column][/su_row]

What is an open lead-acid battery?

Invented back in 1859 by French physician Gaston Planté, lead-acid batteries were the first battery available for commercial use. [2]

In the simplest terms, lead plates sit in a liquid solution of sulphuric acid. For that reason, these batteries are often referred to as flooded batteries .

Even today, these batteries continue to be in extensive use, and for a good reason. Lead-acid batteries are dependable and are one of the cheapest ways to store power when it comes to cost-per-watt.

What is the recommended depth of discharge for an open lead-acid battery?

An open lead-acid battery should never drop below 50% of its charge level capacity . Going beyond these levels can cause irreparable damage to the battery and dramatically reduce its lifespan. [3]

How many cycles can I expect from an open lead-acid leisure battery?

The number of charge cycles a gel battery will produce is directly dependant on the depth of discharge and battery manufacture/model.

Furthermore, these figures will vary widely based on:

  • The environment of the battery
  • How the battery is used
  • How the battery is charged
  • The age of the unit

[su_note note_color=”#bedced” text_color=”#000000″ radius=”0″]

Cycles Vs. D.O.D

  • 500 cycles @ 50% depth of discharge
  • 1300 cycles @ 30% depth of discharge

Do I have to vent an open lead-acid battery?

An open lead-acid battery should be installed in a well-ventilated area.

During charging (especially overcharging), due to a chemical reaction, both oxygen and hydrogen gas are produced. This can often create a foul smell (rotten eggs) coming from the batteries.

These gases can be a significant safety concern, primarily when the batteries are located or charged in an enclosed or poorly ventilated area. This is why a lead-acid battery must be installed in an area with an adequate amount of ventilation.

Failure to do so can lead to a hazardous environment aboard your campervan.

Do I have to maintain an open lead-acid battery?

A lead-acid battery will lose water due to the chemical reaction when charging. This can lead to the electrolyte becoming depleted. To combat this, you are required to carry out the correct battery maintenance. It is recommended to check the level of electrolyte each monthly and topped it to the right level using deionised water.

This will ensure an open lead-acid battery will have the longest possible lifespan.

How do I mount an open lead-acid battery?

An open lead-acid battery should always be mounted securely in an upright position. Failure to do so could result in the contents of the battery (sulphuric acid) spilling out. And as you would guess, this can be exceptionally dangerous.

BATTERY TECHNOLOGY 2 : V.R.L.A. Batteries

What is a v.r.l.a. battery.

A valve-regulated lead-acid (V.R.L.A.) battery, commonly known as a sealed lead-acid battery (S.L.A.) or maintenance-free battery , is a type of lead-acid battery [4] .

Depending on the type of V.R.L.A. battery, the electrolyte is either absorbed in a plate separator (A.G.M.) or formed into a gel (gel).

One fundamental principle of a V.R.L.A. is the addition of a gas safety valve.  Its job is to regulate the internal pressure of the battery for any gas build-up. By trapping the gas inside, recombination can occur, where the gas is eventually facilitated back within the battery.

As a result, a V.R.L.A. battery does not require constant maintenance (no topping up of water).

How does a V.R.L.A. valve work?

When operating under normal circumstances, the valve on a V.R.L.A battery is closed. This seals any hydrogen and oxygen gas inside the battery. As the gas is now sealed, recombination is eventually facilitated back within the battery. However, if the battery is overcharged, or charged at a fast rate, gas can begin to build up.

If the internal pressure exceeds safety limits, a pressure relief valve will open to allow the excess gases to escape. This will effectively regulate the pressure back to a safe level (hence ‘valve-regulated’ in ‘V.R.L.A’).

Why is a V.R.L.A. battery called a maintenance-free battery?

The term “maintenance free” is actually a contradiction; A V.R.L.A. still requires function testing and regular cleaning.

The reason why a V.R.L.A. battery is labelled ‘maintenance-free’ is that they are not required to be filled with deionised water. This is because the in-built safety valve seals the gas inside the battery, preventing any vapour loss.

This essentially means the battery will not lose any electrolyte. As a result, you are not required to carry out any maintenance.

What are the main types of V.R.L.A. batteries available?

There are two primary types of V.R.L.A. batteries, absorbent glass mat (A.G.M.) and gel.

A.G.M Battery

  • Cheapest V.R.L.A battery
  • Up to two times longer cycle life than a standard flooded battery
  • Maintenance-free
  • Non-spillable
  • Mountable in multiple positions
  • Excellent performance under high loads
  • Brilliant performance in challenging climates
  • Fast charge speed
  • Vibration resistant
  • A.G.M. batteries cost more compared to a V.L.A. battery of the same capacity.

What is an A.G.M. battery?

The abbreviation A.G.M. stands for absorbent glass mat and is a sealed lead-acid battery that was initially developed for the military in the 1980s. There high performance and enhanced electrical reliability are ideally suited for a campervans auxiliary electrical system.

An A.G.M. battery still contains lead and an electrolyte like an open lead-acid battery, but what makes these batteries different is the internal construction.

Inside, you will find both positive and negative plates separated by an absorbent glass mat. These mats effectively trap the electrolyte and stop it from flowing.

How many charge cycles does an A.G.M. battery have compared to the depth of discharge?

The number of charge cycles an A.G.M battery will produce is dependant the depth of discharge, ambient temperature, manufacturer and battery manufacturer/model.

  • 400 cycles @ 80% depth of discharge
  • 600 cycles @ 50% depth of discharge
  • 1500 cycles @ 30% depth of discharge

Source: These figures listed are taken directly from the datasheet of a scientific study published by VictonEnergy .

Do I have to vent an A.G.M. battery?

An A.G.M. battery will still release a minimal amount of gas if the internal pressure exceeds a certain level.

Although the amount of discharge is considerably less than a conventional open lead-acid battery, it is still advisable to install an A.G.M. battery in an area with ventilation.

Do I have to maintain an A.G.M. battery?

As an A.G.M. battery is sealed, this all but eliminate the need for any mechanical maintenance.

However, it is still advised to carry out function testing and regular cleaning.

How do I mount an A.G.M. battery?

Majority of A.G.M batteries can be mounted upright and on their sides with no problems, but should not be mounted upside down.

Gel Battery

  • Excellent slow discharge rates
  • Operates better higher ambient operating temperatures
  • Long cycle life
  • Excellent performance in challenging climates
  • Most expensive V.R.L.A. battery

What is a gel battery?

Very similar to an A.G.M. battery, a gel battery is a type of sealed lead-acid battery in which the liquid electrolyte contains a silica additive. As a result, the electrolyte is now a gel. [5]

Home many charge cycles does a gel battery have compared to the depth of discharge?

  • 500 cycles @ 80% depth of discharge
  • 750 cycles @ 50% depth of discharge
  • 1800 cycles @ 30% depth of discharge

Source: These figures are taken directly from the datasheet of a scientific study published by VictonEnergy .

Do I have to vent a gel battery?

A gel battery will still release a minimal amount of gas if the internal pressure exceeds a certain level.

Although the amount of gas discharge is considerably less a conventional open lead-acid battery, it is still advisable to install a gel battery in an area with ventilation.

Do I have to maintain a gel battery?

As a gel battery is sealed, this all but eliminate the need for any mechanical maintenance.

How do I mount a gel battery?

Gel batteries can be mounted upright and on their sides with no problems, but should not be mounted upside down.

BATTERY TECHNOLOGY 3: Lithium Batteries

What is a lithium battery.

The first commercially viable lithium battery was developed in 1985 by Nobel prize winner Akira Yoshino [6] . Since then, the technology has undergone tremendous advancements. These batteries are now found in everything; from cars to smartphones, kitchen appliances to spacecraft, the list is endless.

It was only a matter of time before they became a viable option for the leisure market. A lithium-ion battery is around half the weight of a lead-acid battery, yet have over twice the energy density. This means you can get away with a smaller battery size that will also reduce your vehicles overall weight.

One thing to note is, just like a lead-acid battery, you can damage a lithium-ion battery if you fully discharge it. Thankfully, most batteries have an inbuilt electronic controller that shuts down the output when the charge level approaches a predetermined point.

What are the main types of lithium batteries used in a campervan?

Although there are many different types of lithium batteries out there, the primary type you will find is a LiFePO4 battery.

LiFePO4 Battery

  • Up to 70% lighter than that of a conventional lead-acid battery
  • Life span 10 times longer than that of a traditional lead-acid battery
  • Extremely high costs (although, over a batteries lifetime, a LiFePO4 battery can work out to be the cheapest option)
  • You cannot charge a LiFePO4 battery below freezing.

What is a LiFePO4 battery?

The abbreviation LiFePO4 stands for lithium iron phosphate and is a relatively new type of lithium solution.

A LiFePO4 battery uses lithium-ion-derived chemistry and shares many advantages and disadvantages with other lithium-ion batteries.

What is the recommended depth-of-discharge for a LiFePO4 battery?

A LiFePO4 battery has a recommended depth-of-discharge to 80%. However, some lithium-ion battery manufactures claim their batteries can go to a 95% D.O.D.

How many charge cycles does a LiFePO4 battery have compared to the depth of discharge?

The number of charge cycles a LiFePO4 battery will produce is directly dependant on the depth of discharge and battery manufacture/model.

  • 2500 cycles @ 80% depth of discharge
  • 3000 cycles @ 70% depth of discharge
  • 5000 cycles @ 50% depth of discharge

Source: The figures here are taken directly from a scientific datasheet published by VictonEnergy .

Do I have to maintain a LiFePO4 battery?

As a LiFePO4 battery is sealed, there is no battery maintenance require.

However, a LiFePO4 battery still requires function testing and regular cleaning for optimal operation.

How do I mount a LiFePO4 battery?

Since a LiFePO4 battery contains no liquid, they can be mounted in any direction, including upside down.

Battery Capacity

Understanding battery ratings & labels.

The power and longevity of a battery are noted by its amp-hour (Ah).

In simple terms, this denotes how long a battery will last if it is not re-charged.

For example, if a battery has a rating of 100 Ah, it will be able to provide 10 amps for 10 hours, or 1 amp for 100 hours.

Leisure Battery Terminology

What is a charge cycle.

A charge cycle is a process of discharging then re-charging a battery.

What is D.O.D. (depth of discharge)?

The D.O.D., otherwise known as depth of discharge , is a percentage of power you would use from a batteries available capacity.

For example, an A.G.M. battery at 100% charge may have a reading of 13.00 volts of electricity. At 0% charge (flat), the battery would have a reading of 10.50 volts.  If you were to use 50% of the available power, the battery would have a reading of 12.05 volts. This would then be known as a 50% depth of discharge.

You would now re-charge the battery back to 100% (13.00 volts).

This whole process is known as a deep-cycle .

What is cycle life?

Cycle life is the total number of charge then discharge cycles a battery can sustain before it needs to be replaced.

Key takeaways

Vans are no longer just modes of transportation. With more and more people choosing to live in their vehicles, it’s safe to say that vans can serve as reliable — and portable — homes. And, despite what stereotypes may tell you, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy your favorite luxuries while on the road.

Batteries for Vans

From campervan air conditioning systems and LED light strips  to microwaves and small refrigerators , there are plenty of amenities you can install directly in your van. Of course, to power these items, you’re going to need vanlife batteries. Let’s examine the different batteries available and how you can pick the best battery for van life.

Why Do I Need a Battery in My Van?

If you’re new to van life, you might be wondering why exactly you need to add thousands of dollars in batteries to your cost of van life . Well, a battery for your camper van lets you power items like the following:

  • Electronics
  • Heating and cooling systems
  • Appliances (such as refrigerators)

Although a secondary power system isn’t 100% necessary (especially if you  avoid using electricity to heat and cool your campervan ), it would be difficult to stay in your van long-term without one. If you want to cook meals, store food, connect to the internet for hours on end , control internal temperatures and use lights, you’re going to need more power.

What Type of Battery is Best for Vanlife?

When you look at battery options, you’ll quickly realize that there are many types available. The best option for you will vary depending on your situation — some people will require high capacities, while those minimal power needs can make do with low capacity batteries.

In addition to checking the powering capabilities, you should ensure the battery is good for off-grid life. For example, if you’re going to be spending extensive time on the road, you’ll need a battery that can charge via solar power . Overall, there are three main types of batteries you may choose from:

  • Lithium-ion

Between these options, most van lifers agree that lithium-ion batteries offer the most benefits. However, it’s a good idea to review all three before making a conclusive decision. Here’s a closer look at each battery type.

Lithium-Ion Van Batteries

Lithium Van Battery

Lithium batteries are rechargeable batteries that use lithium in their electrolysis process. During the charging cycle, the charger passes current into the battery. The resulting electric charge ionizes lithium atoms, which produces lithium ions that move from the battery’s cathode to the anode. This creates a potential difference that allows the battery to store an electric charge. When the battery is plugged in, the lithium ions move from the anode to the cathode, resulting in a flow of electric current.

In comparison to other battery types, lithium-ion batteries are compact and light. They also have up to three times the voltage of regular batteries. Their lightweight nature, coupled with their high performance capabilities, makes them one of the most widely used rechargeable batteries out there. However, they’re also the most expensive.

Here are the top advantages of lithium-ion batteries:

  • Low self-discharge rate (only lose 1.5-2% of their charge every month)
  • High energy density (which provides long-lasting, strong performances)
  • Low maintenance requirements

Here are the main downsides to lithium-ion batteries:

  • Susceptible to problems if they’re overcharged

Who Should Get Lithium-Ion Batteries?

If you plan to regularly charge items in your vehicle, lithium-ion vanlife batteries are the way to go. When it comes to charging capacities, safety features and maintenance, these models simply cannot be beat. Thanks to the abundance of features, they’re well worth the price. The only people who may not benefit from them are those who live in their vans part-time and have limited powering needs.

Dakota Lithium-Ion Battery

Dakota Lithium-Ion Battery

The Dakota Lithium 12V deep cycle battery can pack up to 100 amp-hours, which is more than enough to meet your on-the-road power demands. Its high energy storage capacity also makes it a great option for storing solar energy from your solar PV panels. Dakota currently retails this item at $899 and boasts the following features:

  • Supplies double the power of traditional batteries
  • Rapid charging cycle (charges up to 5x faster than traditional batteries)
  • Can run at temperatures ranging from -20 °F to 120 °F
  • Long lifespan (lasts four times longer than lead-acid batteries)

On the negative side, these batteries have shorter lifespans in comparison to other lithium-ion batteries.

AGM Van Batteries

AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries contain lead-acid and are designed to deliver powerful bursts of starting amps. Invented in the late 1970s, it gets its name from the glass mats packed around its ultra-thin lead plates. It works by passing electrolytes through the fiberglass mats, which allows the electrolyte to touch the lead plates without flooding the battery. Thus, no liquid will leak out of it.

While there are benefits to AGM vanlife batteries, they still pale in comparison to lithium-ion batteries. Not only are AGM batteries larger and bulkier, but they also have smaller life cycles, lower depths of discharge and lower efficiencies.

The pros of AGM van batteries include:

  • Spill-proof (even if the battery is placed in a compromising position)
  • Short charging time (can complete a charging cycle 5x faster than a traditional battery)
  • Durable (not easily damaged by continuous vibrations or extreme temperatures)

The cons of AGM van batteries include:

  • Low specific energy (can’t be used to power several devices at once)
  • Negatively affected by overcharging and high voltages (which shortens their lifespan)
  • Capacity gradually reduces over time

Who Should Get AGM Van Batteries?

As mentioned above, AGM vanlife batteries are not the top choice made by most vehicle owners. However, if you’re trying to save money and don’t have high powering needs, they may be a suitable option. Since the capacity will reduce after most uses, they’re best for those who live in their vans part-time and don’t intend to power items frequently.

Gel Van Batteries

Gel Van Batteries

Gel batteries are the newest addition to the rechargeable battery world. Unlike conventional batteries, they contain a thick gel rather than a liquid electrolyte. This gel is usually made of silica and hardens after setting, completely enveloping and isolating the negative and positive plates. This protects the plates from mechanical damage and short-circuiting.

Despite these modifications, gel batteries tend to have a lower output than AMG and lithium-ion batteries. On the bright side, they have a longer lifespan (thanks to the hardened silica gel). However, lithium-ion batteries still reign supreme due to their strong capacities and compact natures.

Here are a few perks of gel van batteries:

  • Long lifespan (can last between 10 and 20 years)
  • Can be installed in any position (as they’re maintenance-free and leak-proof)
  • Resistant to vibrations

Here are a couple of drawbacks to gel van batteries:

  • Slow charging cycles (that require you to be present during the charging process)
  • Affected by high temperatures

Who Should Get Gel Van Batteries?

Similar to AGM batteries, gel van batteries are not the best choice and do not offer the same capabilities as lithium-ion batteries. However, they’re more affordable, which makes them popular among budget-friendly and part-time van lifers. They’re suitable for van owners who live in areas with moderate temperatures, need long-term, affordable solutions and are okay with slow charging times.

What Else Will You Need?: Van Battery-Powered System Components

Van Power Inverter

Finding the best campervan battery for your needs is no easy feat. If you’ve gone through the options, studied the pros and cons and come to a decision, give yourself a pat on the back. Then, get ready for some more work, because the job isn’t quite done yet. Picking a vanlife battery is just the first step — you’ll also need to gather the following:

  • Power source
  • 12v inverter

The power source is used to charge your battery. It may consist of solar panels, an alternator, shore power or a combination of these items. You must connect it to the selected battery, which will then “hold” the stored charge from the source.

To use this electricity to power AC appliances and lights, your battery power needs to be converted from DC power to AC power. That’s where a 12v inverter comes in. This device will “translate” the battery power to 120 volts, which will then be accepted by all of your AC appliances. Otherwise, you can . The inverter also has to be wired in your van (you can learn more about wiring an inverter here ).

Note: To use DC powered appliances like 12v van tv’s , air conditioners etc. you do not need to AC power.

Whether you’re using a lithium-ion, AGM or gel battery, you’re going to need a comprehensive campervan battery system to enjoy electricity. While most systems consist of these three components, the specific electrical system you’ll need to wire may vary depending on the selected power source.

What if I Don’t Want to Wire My Whole Van?: Battery Power Stations

Battery Power Station for Van

Connecting a battery to a power source and inverter, and then wiring your entire van correctly takes time and effort. If you’re not interested in going through the whole built-in power set-up, consider getting a portable power station instead.

Put simply, a portable battery power station is a “plug and play” system that can be powered by a small battery charger and will reduce some of the difficulty of building a van . One end of the station holds the plug, which is connected directly to your solar panel or power source. Meanwhile, the other end features a power station where you can plug in your lighting and devices. The result is a quick powering solution that doesn’t require any installation or wiring.

Portable   Battery Power Stations vs. Deep Cycle Van Batteries

Although portable battery power stations are meant to be temporary solutions, many van owners use them permanently. The main advantage of portable power stations is the easy campervan battery set-up — you don’t have to worry about wiring an electrical system , and you can enjoy power almost instantly.

On the downside, portable solutions have lower powering capabilities than deep cycle vanlife batteries. Moreover, the wires and battery station will be visible, which is not aesthetically pleasing. While both solutions will work, a deep cycle battery is best if you live in your van full-time or have high powering needs.

The Best Portable Van Battery Power Stations

Does a portable van battery power station sound appealing to you? Below, we’ve put together three of the most popular, trusted power stations. Each brand offers a variety of power capacities – however, we’ve focused on the 1,500Wh options (which is the most common power capacity for van lifers).

The strong power capabilities are paired with a small size; the battery weighs just 22 pounds, making it one of the most lightweight power stations available. Top features include:

  • LCD display (which shows the remaining charge levels)
  • Solar PV charging cable
  • 5 DC connections (including 2 USB-C ports, 2 USB ports and one 12V port)
  • 3 AC outlets

Currently, Jackery retails this power station for $1,099.

How Much Battery Power Do I Need in My Van?

There’s no definitive answer when it comes to the amount of power you need to sufficiently meet your van’s requirements. This varies from van owner to van owner based on the number of lights/appliances you need to charge, as well as the individual power draw of each of those items. If you can avoid using electricity for things like heating , you’ll need a lot less power. To get a rough estimate, start by identifying all the devices you intend to power simultaneously. Then, for each appliance, calculate how much energy it will use in amp-hours.

Start by multiplying the watts by hours, then divide by the efficiency and battery voltage amounts. For example, say you plan to run a 250W bulb for ten hours with a 12V battery and an inverter that operates at 85% efficiency. You would calculate the following:

  • 250W * 10 = 2,500 watt-hours
  • 2,500 watt-hours / 0.85 (efficiency) = 2,941 watt-hours
  • 2,941 / 12 = ~245 amp-hours

Calculate the amp-hours for all your devices, then add them together to get a total value. The final result will be the ideal battery capacity for your van.

So, What Battery Setup is Best for Your Van?

Finding the best van battery comes down to your needs. First, decide if you’re willing to wire a deep cycle battery system. If so, stick with a lithium-ion battery. If you’d rather go with a “plug and play” battery solution, you can’t go wrong with the Goal Zero , Bluetti , or Jackery portable power station. And don’t forget — you can always reach out with any questions!

What’s a lithium-ion battery.

12-volt lithium-ion batteries use the same battery technology found in devices like cell phones. They have deep-cycling capabilities which means they can be drained and recharged continuously without major issues.

Compared with traditional lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries provide more power for longer periods of time. Plus, they recharge faster to boot. And while they’re more expensive upfront, they last much longer than traditional batteries. Because of this, they can save you money on replacement costs over time.

The kind of 12-volt lithium-ion battery used in RVs is a lithium iron phosphate battery – commonly referred to as LiFePO4 batteries. These batteries are designed to be extremely safe and stable. (They won’t catch fire or explode in response to things like collisions). These batteries will usually also include a battery management system – or “BMS” – to make them even safer.

With so many benefits, it’s no surprise to see 12-volt lithium-ion batteries becoming more and more popular. But with so many options available (and such a big investment), it can be hard to choose which battery to buy.

That’s why we’ve made this list of the top 5 best 12v lithium-ion batteries for van life.

Costco has Lion batteries on sale regularly two for $1400. At $700 each this makes them an awesome option.

A “lifetime warranty” is, at best, only as good as the lifetime of the company making the promise — if it goes out of business, so does the warranty… Reputation is more important than company marketing promises.

Great information! Thanks for sharing, Stephen!

Great article, ended up going with Renogy due to an insane sale they were having. BatteryPriceCheck.com is a good resource if anyone is in the market and needs to compare prices/specs/weights etc.

A Guide to Lithium Batteries for Vanlife

GIANT Lithium Battery

You may have heard one of the latest buzz words amongst vanlifers: lithium. Lithium batteries have fast become one of the must have components to any off grid electrical system. But, you might be wondering why and are they really worth the hype?

Battery selection for your van can get technical and overwhelming quite quickly, especially if you don’t have any electrical knowledge. However, it can be one of the most important choices you make, as you will likely want to be able to power your home on wheels without any issues.

In this article, we’re going to take a deep dive into lithium batteries to give you a better idea of what they’re all about and why everyone in the vanlife community seems to be talking about them. We will also compare lithium and AGM batteries, as these are the two main battery options you’ll likely be choosing between.

What is a Lithium Battery?

Lithium ion and lithium iron phosphate are two types of batteries used in today’s electronics. You’ll most likely know lithium ion batteries as those that are used in smartphones, tablets or laptops. However, when it comes to your van, you’ll be looking at 12v lithium iron phosphate batteries, which can be also written as LiFePO4 batteries.

A LiFePO4 battery is more stable, safer, longer lasting and faster charging than lithium ion batteries. This is why they are perfect for camping and off grid systems, especially when linked into a solar panel system.

Other Types of Batteries

There are, of course, other types of batteries that you might want to know about for vanlife. Before lithium burst onto the scene, you may have heard of AGM batteries or absorbed gas mat (AGM) batteries.

Lead acid batteries have been the more traditional type of battery used in vans and vehicles in the past. AGM batteries are a type of sealed lead acid battery and are considered the more superior for vans of the lead acid varieties.

However, with the arrival of lithium batteries, there has been a great debate about whether lithium has now surpassed AGM as the better overall battery for your off-grid power system.

Benefits of 12v Lithium Batteries for Vans

There are numerous benefits of lithium batteries for vans. Let’s look at the main highlights here:

1. Lightweight

Lithium batteries or LiFePO4 batteries are incredibly lightweight. In fact, they’re the lightest battery you can get for your power system. This is a huge benefit for campervans, as it means less weight overall in your vehicle.

2. Long lasting

Lithium batteries are long lasting and are built to run for between 3000-5000 cycles. This means you can have your battery for years and it will reliably run your home on wheels.

3.   Great usable energy

One of the impressive aspects of lithium batteries is that they can be almost discharged completely without causing any damage. This means that you get greater usable energy out of lithium than other battery types.

4. Fast charging

Lithium batteries are incredibly efficient and charge quicker than other battery types. This means that you can ensure you have power no matter how you decide to charge it: solar, 240v or by the vehicle’s alternator.

Pros and Cons: AGM versus Lithium

While lithium has various benefits, AGM batteries have been the main type used in dual battery systems for vans for many years. AGMs are a solid choice, but lithium tends to edge them out on several factors, namely, weight, discharge level and capacity, life span and charging rate.

However, AGMs still present the closest competition to lithium and they still offer some benefits themselves. They are generally the much cheaper option too, so if you’re a budget van builder then you might be interested in an AGM vs lithium comparison.

If you’re tossing up between an AGM and lithium battery, let’s break down the pros and cons of both these popular battery types for vanlife.

Pros and Cons of Lithium battery

Pros and cons of agm batteries, choosing and installing lithium batteries for your van.

Lithium batteries at the ground

If you’ve been convinced that lithium batteries are worth the money, then you may be wondering what exactly you need and how to best install them in your power system.

Selecting the best lithium battery for your van

Lithium batteries are generally the safest and best batteries to use in your van. However, not all lithium batteries are built the same. You want to make sure that you buy Grade A+ 100aH cell lithium batteries, which are fire safe and the most chemically stable choice. While they are generally more expensive than other lithium batteries, the added safety is worth the money.

Our Grade A LiFePO4 batteries will ensure you’re getting the best out of your electrical system. Some other brands with cheaper prices may have Grade B cells, so it’s worth doing some extra research to understand what you’re buying.

How many lithium batteries do you need for your van?

If you are looking to set up your dual battery system or off grid power system, you’ll most likely want to know how many batteries do you need or how many amp hours should your leisure battery have.

You’ll notice that battery capacity or size is measured in amp hours or often shortened to Ah. The more amp hours your battery holds, the longer it will last per charge cycle. However, this can differ depending on your battery type. As mentioned above, rechargeable lithium batteries can generally use almost 100% of their Ah capacity, as compared to an AGM which should only be used to around 50%. This means that a 100Ah lithium battery will give you 100 amp hours of usable capacity, while you’d need x2 100Ah AGM batteries to achieve the same capacity.

Calculating your power usage

How many amp hours you’ll need for your van electrical system will depend heavily on what your van set up is like and the electrical demands it has. For example, are you just looking to run a fridge and some LED lights or do you also have a water pump and inverter for charging electronic devices?

You can find out the maximum and continuous draw of most devices or products by looking at the fine print or searching specifications for each item on the web. If you find out roughly how much power your main components like your fridge, lights, water pump and charging devices use or draw, then you can understand how big your battery needs to be.

Everyone’s vans will have different power demands, so it will be completely unique for each set up!

It can be especially helpful to seek advice from an electrician, auto electrician or van build expert, as they will be able to recommend the best battery capacity for your devices. You can always ask us for advice or any questions you might have, just simply jump onto our website chat or send a Whatsapp message at 0427 495 449.

How to charge your lithium battery

You’ll also need to take into account how you will charge your battery system. You can charge your 12v lithium battery a few different ways:

  • Solar panels
  • Vehicle alternator
  • Shore power or 240 volt power

Depending on how your van is set up you can have all three charging options or even just one. Most vans will have a solar system and also be able to charge via the alternator. However, it can be possible with more advanced electrical systems to have 240 volt charging capability.

However, lithium batteries are perfect for off-grid power systems, because of their charging efficiency and long lasting value. This means they work well with solar panels for when you’re set up at camp for multiple days. Depending on how big your lithium battery is will determine how many solar panels or how many watts you’ll need to produce. Again, a qualified electrician will be able to provide more advice on exactly how many watts you’ll need to recharge your battery system.

On days that it’s cloudy, using the alternator of your vehicle is a helpful back up. This means you’ll be able to top up your battery capacity by driving.

Charger for lithium batteries

Lithium batteries have been on the market for much less time than AGM or lead acid batteries. This means that not all accessories are compatible with lithium.

If you plan on having a solar panel as part of your van electrical system, then you’ll need a solar charge controller. This regulates the flow of electricity between the solar panel/s and your battery. There are many different controllers on the market, but you’ll need to make sure that the one you purchase is compatible with lithium.

A high quality MPPT solar charge controller will generally be able to be programmed to different battery types, which means you can use the same controller for either AGM or lithium depending on what you end up going with. It’s important that you stick to lithium compatible accessories to ensure your power system will function properly.

Buying Lithium Batteries for Your Van

While lithium batteries certainly don’t come cheap, the benefits often outweigh the cost for many vanlifers. There are a variety of brands out there on the market, including some Australian made lithium batteries. It’s worth working out how big of a battery you need and how much you’re willing to spend.

Lithium batteries have become one of the most talked about additions to vanlife. The efficient, long lasting and reliable batteries are capable of powering any van set up and all your electronics on board. However, it can be difficult to understand the pros and cons of lithium, especially when compared to the more affordable AGM batteries.

While lithium is certainly far superior across most aspects, it all comes down to your particular van design, lifestyle and budget.

How to Jump Start Your Car With a Cordless Tool Battery

It’s not our preferred method, but if you’re out of options here’s how to do it.

Coincidentally, when I turned the key in the ignition of my car this week, I heard the staccato clickety-click of relays trying to connect various circuits rather than the business-like sound of the starter turning the engine over. The battery wasn’t strong enough to start the car. I hadn’t left anything on, so there were three possibilities. The 4-year old battery could be failing, the alternator might not be charging the battery enough, or I could have a short somewhere draining the battery.

I hadn’t noticed any warning lights indicating a charging issue, and my car hasn’t been in any floods or accidents that could have compromised the wiring or electronics. So, the battery seemed like the most likely cause. It wasn’t completely dead, it just didn't have quite enough juice to turn the engine over. Often, as batteries age, they fail slowly. Either they can no longer be fully charged or they can’t store a full charge for long—the voltage gradually dips down below 12 volts as it sits unused. Your car’s charging system typically generates between 14 and 15 volts to charge the battery. And, although commonly referred to as a 12-volt battery, the actual voltage if you measure it is usually around 12.5 volts.

There are two common options, jump the battery from another vehicle, or pull out my battery charger—either of which takes about 20 minutes. Getting keys, cables, moving my truck—or getting the charger and extension cord out—starting the car, then putting everything away, eats up more time than you think.

With the prospect of getting to work late, I opted for a third option—using a cordless tool battery to start my car. I’ve done this a few times in the past, and it’s a hack that can get you going quickly. In fact, the last time I did it, I made up a couple jumper leads that easily plug into the battery, and clip to the car, to make it even easier and quicker. The disclaimer: I don’t recommend you do this regularly, as it is possible to damage your tool battery or electronics in your car. Don’t leave the tool battery connected to your car for any longer than absolutely necessary.

How to Jump Start the Battery

I have Milwaukee cordless tools which use 18-volt batteries—that’s about 3 volts more than your car’s alternator generates to charge the battery. In my experience, your car can handle that extra voltage for a short period—but keep it as short a period as possible. Most of the time, your battery just needs a little more juice to get the starter to turn over, so you don’t really need a huge battery—5 amp-hours is often sufficient.

leads to jump start a car with a tool battery

For the jumper leads, I used materials I had on hand. The wire is 12 gauge, used to power an electric motor on an old project—10 gauge would be a better option. I connected alligator clips to one end of each wire. You could also use larger battery charger clamps . And I crimped spade connectors on the other end of each wire.

tool batteries usually have symbols indicating polarity

Press the spade connectors into the appropriate battery contacts—I used red and black wires to make it easier to identify positive and negative. On tool batteries, the positive and negative contacts are labeled, so be sure to match them up with your car. Use the alligator clips to connect to the accessory lug on the positive battery terminal, and the negative can clip onto a stud or bolt on the engine.

connecting the positive jumper

Once connected, get in your car and start it. Then quickly disconnect the tool battery. Once the leads are pulled from the battery, take it with you in case you need to jump start it again. Also, be sure to figure out why your battery was low as soon as possible and get it fixed properly.

GP4000 Jump Starter 4000A Peak Car Starter

It’s worth noting that you can buy battery jump packs specifically for this type of situation. Good ones cost more than $100 and, if I needed one often, I would buy one. But I already have several tool batteries charged up at any time and I have only used this method three times in the last few years, so I’ll hold off on the investment.

Ford recalls over 240,000 Maverick pickups due to tail lights that fail to illuminate

van travel battery

Ford is recalling over 240,000 vehicles due to tail lights that fail to illuminate, reducing the vehicle's visibility to other drivers and increasing the risk of a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Wednesday.

The recall affects certain 2022-2024 Maverick pickups , according to the NHTSA. The Body Control Module (BCM) may "inadvertently deactivate one or both rear tail lights," the agency said.

According to NHTSA documents, the issue stems from the BCM falsely detecting a current overload on one or both of the rear position lamp circuits, resulting in one or both of the lamps to be deactivated during a drive cycle. The issue does not affect headlights, stop lamps, or turn signal functions, according to the NHTSA.

Dealers will update the BCM software free of charge and owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 20, 2024. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and Ford's number for this recall is 24S24.

Battery issue.

The recall comes weeks after the automaker recalled over 450,000 vehicles because of an issue that could affect the battery.

The recall affected certain 2021-2024 Bronco Sport and 2022-2023 Maverick vehicles. The NHTSA said the body and power train control modules on these vehicles may fail to detect a change in the battery state of charge, which can result in a loss of electrical accessories such as hazard lights, or cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The NHTSA notices says dealers will recalibrate the body control module and power train control module free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 13, 2024, and owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 for more information. The recall number is 24S24.

Federal auto regulators also recently  announced a probe into a Ford recall  of nearly 42,652 automobiles following an error with cracked fuel injectors they say can cause gas leaks and ignite engine fires.

In a summary report released last month, the NHTSA wrote it was opening an investigation into a recall that affects 2022-2023 Bronco Sport and 2022 Escape vehicles.

According to the  federal investigation announcement , owners can take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have a drain tube installed in the vehicle at no cost.

The remedy also includes a free engine control software update to detect a pressure drop in the fuel injection system, the federal regulator reported. Should that occur, the software will disable the high pressure fuel pump, reduce engine power and cut temps in the engine compartment. Owners also will get a "seek service" message, documents show.

Ford's number for this recall is 24S16. The recall is an expansion of previous recall: 22V-859.

China’s Electric Cars Keep Improving, a Worry for Rivals Elsewhere

More capable autonomous driving is just one way Chinese automakers are threatening to pull ahead — their E.V.s are also becoming bigger and roomier.

A light blue car on display at an auto show being photographed by a person with a smartphone.

By Keith Bradsher

Reporting from Beijing

Automakers in China are building a new generation of bigger, more technologically advanced and competitive electric cars, threatening to leap further ahead of their global rivals as they step up exports around the world.

The dozens of car companies operating in China plan to put 71 new battery electric models on sale this year. Many new models have taller hoods for a bolder appearance and more storage space. The cars have bigger tires that improve braking. The seats are thicker and more comfortable. The batteries are ever smaller, more powerful and quicker to recharge.

The changes are aimed at making the cars even more appealing for customers in China and more competitive abroad. Along with plug-in hybrid cars, battery electric cars are taking sales away from gasoline-powered cars and their manufacturers.

China is also moving ahead with the technology and regulations for self-driving cars. The authorities approved data security arrangements this week for more capable autonomous vehicles. They approved cars from Tesla, the American electric vehicle company that also builds and sells cars in China, as well as five Chinese manufacturers, including BYD, Tesla’s principal global rival , and Nio, a longtime player in China’s auto sector .

The approvals show the Chinese government’s eagerness to push the development of self-driving vehicles, which are widely seen as central to future competitiveness in the car industry. The technology is more compatible with battery electric cars than with plug-in hybrids or gasoline-powered cars, and Chinese companies are trying to catch up with Tesla, the leader in these systems.

In the United States, Tesla’s so-called Autopilot feature has been the subject of a series of government safety investigations. But in China, regulators and the general public have tended to see the technology as safer than relying on human drivers.

Chinese automakers have been investing heavily in driver-assistance software. An electric car “is becoming a robot on wheels,” said Frank Wu, the vice president of design at Jiyue. The company is a joint venture of Zhejiang Geely, a Chinese automaker, and Baidu, one of China’s main artificial intelligence companies and Tesla’s partner in its self-driving efforts in China.

Better batteries and falling costs underpin China’s push in electric cars. CATL, based in southeastern China and the world’s largest manufacturer of electric car batteries , announced last week at the Beijing auto show that a 10-minute charge of its newest battery would give a range of 370 miles. A 30-minute full charge would give a range of 620 miles, the company said.

Achieving these distances involves extremely high-precision chemistry and engineering and “putting each nano-particle in the right place,” said Gao Huan, the chief technology officer of CATL’s electric car business.

The advances have meant automakers can use smaller batteries, freeing up space in cars’ interiors, or they can keep the battery the same size and achieve greater range.

Much of the extra space is going into larger back seats with more legroom.

“We’re going to put more focus on the backseat — we want to make it more appealing,” said Wang Tan, the general manager of design at XPeng Motors , a Chinese electric car manufacturer.

Manufacturers of electric vehicles used to put a priority on keeping cars as light as possible, because weight is what mostly matters for how far a car can go before needing a recharge. But more powerful batteries now allow electric vehicles to be taller and heavier.

Bigger front ends create a luxurious appearance that taps into many buyers’ admiration of sport utility vehicles, said Kris Tomasson, vice president of design at Nio.

“A higher front has that prestige,” he said.

Chinese automakers are also embracing designs with more edges, like a blue-green Denza Z9GT sedan displayed at the show by BYD. They are shifting away from lightweight but costly aluminum and building cars with a higher proportion of slightly heavier but cheaper steel alloys.

Aluminum body panels need to be more curved and do not allow for the sharper lines possible with a return to steel, said Stefan Sielaff, Geely’s vice president of global design. The effect is to make the cars more visually striking as automotive fashions shift away from the rounded shapes on previous electric cars.

Customers overseas as well as in China are getting pickier. Many are buying plug-in hybrids instead of cars powered only by batteries, although the markets for both are still growing in China.

Not all the electric cars at the Beijing show are bigger and roomier. Xiaomi, a Chinese producer of inexpensive smartphones, displayed its first electric car, the SU7 sports sedan. The tech company has made a move into the car market that Apple has mulled for many years without undertaking.

The SU7 looks almost identical from the outside to a Porsche Taycan electric car. But it costs less than a fifth of a Taycan, which ranges in China from $140,000 to $275,000.

Lei Jun, the chief executive of Xiaomi, was followed by a crowd of admirers as he walked around the auto show.

He exuded confidence in a speech at the SU7 introduction while still expressing worry about one rival. “Except Tesla, there seems to be hardly anyone better than us,” he said.

Chinese auto executives consistently express a mixture of respect and fear of Tesla, an automaker that did not introduce any new cars at the show. Last week, Tesla announced a 9 percent fall in sales and a 55 percent drop in profits in the first quarter of this year, and plans to lay off more than a tenth of its worldwide employees, or 14,000 people.

Long-established Western automakers, by contrast, lag in autonomous driving and are struggling to catch up in electric cars.

General Motors and Ford Motor have lost much of their market share in China over the past five years. Ford introduced the most-talked-about car at the Beijing auto show in 2020 , the Mustang Mach-E electric car. But administrative problems led to more than a year of production delays, and public interest evaporated.

Ford decided this year to emphasize very different Mustangs, equipped with hulking five-liter V-8 gasoline engines and four exhaust pipes.

Bill Russo, a former chief executive of Chrysler China who is now an electric car industry consultant in Shanghai, said Tesla had emerged as the sole strong global contender from the United States in the electric vehicle market.

“If they ever died, the whole E.V. market dies with it in the United States,” he said.

Established companies in Europe also face formidable challenges. China’s electric car exports to Europe are climbing, prompting a European Union investigation into whether they are unfairly subsidized.

Ralf Brandstätter, the chief executive of Volkswagen China, called for Chinese manufacturers to buy car parts in Europe and assemble them there using European workers.

“Then they have to handle a European labor force, European enterprises, and they have to compete in the same environment as we are competing,” he said. China has used steep tariffs and other measures to require that multinationals make cars in China for the Chinese market.

Chinese E.V.s are going next to the United States.

Geely is exporting its Polestar 2 to the United States from China, and paying a 27.5 percent tariff to do so. It is also beginning to export its new Polestar 3, before a planned shift of production to an assembly line being completed this summer in South Carolina.

Travel | travel troubleshooter: budget car rental cleaning fee problem: that’s not my vehicle.

van travel battery

I asked for a damage report. It is not clear how they determined that what they found was animal hair. Additionally, they made the claim based on less than 10 hairs. Don’t you think the fee seems excessive, considering what they found?

— Bernard Sia, Shelby Township, Mich.

ANSWER: You’re right, something is not quite right with this Budget cleaning fee.

For starters, the damage report has several photos that show several tiny white strands in the vehicle. A Budget employee could have vacuumed them away during the cleaning. Are they animal hairs? I have no idea, but the point is, there weren’t that many.

But there’s another, even bigger problem. When I asked you to review the bill again to make sure they were charging the right renter, you discovered a discrepancy that should have immediately made Budget zero out your cleaning fee. It appears the company had sent you a bill for a car other than the one you rented.

You can prevent unnecessary cleaning fees by taking before and after photos of your car and ensuring that you clean the vehicle before bringing it back to the location. But if a car rental company sends you a bill for the wrong car, what then? Well, this is a good reminder to keep your car rental records and, when you’re taking your pictures, to get a shot of the VIN — the vehicle identification number — which you can normally find on the driver’s side of the vehicle on the dashboard near the windshield. This isn’t the first time a car rental company has apparently sent a bill to a customer for the wrong car.

While we’re on the topic of cleaning fees for pets, it’s definitely a thing. Budget has a reputation for charging these fees, which can go as high as $450. So make sure that if you’re renting a car with anything that sheds — a dog, cat or even a coat or blanket — that you clean your rental thoroughly before returning it.

But as I’ve already said, this looks like a case of mistaken identity. So an appeal to one of the Budget executives I list on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org , might have convinced the company to drop its bill.

I contacted Budget on your behalf. It reviewed the bill and refunded the $125 cleaning fee.

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk travel guide.

  • 1. Architecture
  • 2. Attractions
  • 3. Cultural life
  • 4. Souvenirs

Khabarovsk, Russia fascinates visitors with its unusual heritage and fabulous untouched nature. Tourists are drawn to the native culture, eclectic architecture and mesmerizing waters in this off-the-beaten-track destination, which promises a unique and memorable vacation.

As the center of Russia’s far eastern region of Khabarovsk Krai, the city offers celebrations throughout the year which are sure to give added flair to your trip, from traditional culture days to large-scale food fests. It is easy to keep a full itinerary during your stay thanks to its many theaters, museums, restaurants, workshops and quest rooms. Guests who want a more relaxed holiday can venture into the serenity of Khabarovsk nature, including the coast of the Sea of Japan or one of the region’s many picturesque lakes .

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

  • Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
  • Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

Khabarovsk, Russia

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

  • Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
  • Triad Pantomime Theater;
  • Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
  • White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.
