Blackpink Announces ‘Born Pink’ Tour Dates, Plots Largest World Tour in the History of a K-Pop Girl Group

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

Blackpink are launching into their comeback era at full speed with the announcement of Born Pink , the 36-date world tour that aims to be the “largest world tour in the history of a K-pop girl group,” according to the pop phenomenon’s management company YG Entertainment. They also announced the release date for their upcoming LP, also named Born Pink . The album arrives on Sept. 16.

The expansive tour will launch on Oct. 15 in Seoul before Blackpink makes their way to Dallas and Houston. November will see the group performing in Atlanta, Hamilton, Chicago, Newark, Los Angeles, and London before making December stops in Barcelona, Cologne, Paris, Berlin, and Amsterdam.

Blackpink recently made their musical return with “ Pink Venom ,” their first official single since the release of The Album in 2020. After some time holed up in the studio, Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa will release their sophomore album ahead of the tour launch, getting back into the flow of stardom.

“I love to perform, but I don’t always enjoy being part of the spotlight,” Jisoo shared in Blackpink’s candid Rolling Stone cover story . “I think it’s different for the other members: They love to receive the spotlight, feeling energized by the people who come to see us, and then getting a bit depressed when the stage is over and silence arrives. I’m a little different. When I’m onstage, I think about not making mistakes. Performing sometimes feels more like a test than something genuinely fun.”

Blackpink ‘Born Pink’ 2022-2023 World Tour

  • Entertainment
  • Blackpink ‘Born Pink’ 2022-2023 World…

blackpink born pink tour

This fall the supergroup will set the globe ablaze with their largest ever tour .

For their millions of fans who have been clamoring for anything new from pop sensation, Blackpink recently delivered a one-two knockout series of announcements.

First, on August 7th, the group’s official Instagram page posted a sneak peek of their pre-release single called ‘Pink Venom’. Then the next day, fans were met with even more exciting news that Blackpink would soon embark on their largest-ever world tour.

With over 26 tour dates in major cities across Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia, the tour is set to blast off in Seoul, South Korea on October 15 th . Additional performances and dates will be revealed at a later time, raising hopes for fans around the world who have not yet had a chance to see them live. (According to Rolling Stone, 36 dates are planned for the Born Pink tour.)

‘Pink Venom’, scheduled to drop on August 19, is Blackpink’s first release as a group in nearly two years. While individual members have consistently sought out solo performances and projects, fans have been nostalgic for the group to come back as a band. YG Entertainment further noted that their full album would drop sometime in September, a month before their first tour performance commences.

blackpink tour seoul 2022

After almost six years since Blackpink’s debut, the girl group has rewritten history for the K-pop industry. Headlining at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival back in 2019 certainly expanded Blackpink’s international fan base, but their popularity did not stop there. Six of their music videos have surpassed one billion views on Youtube, setting record-highs for idol groups in Korea.

Blackpink’s Instagram page features over 48 million followers, with individual members holding even higher follower counts (Lisa has the highest number of followers at over 80 million).

Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa have each become brand ambassadors for the world’s most high-end luxury brands, including: Dior, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Bvlgari, and Cartier. It is to no surprise that social media pages have already been publishing tips and tactics to acquire a concert ticket before they sell out within seconds.

Unfortunately, no pre-sale updates have been released. But keep checking Blackpink’s official sites and it also wouldn’t hurt to subscribe to newsletters from ticket vendors such as Tickemaster, Ticketek or Live Nation. Tickets will go fast (like in a blink fast) so it’s never too early to stay on top of any announcements.

While the full list of cities and concert details have yet to be released, here are the 26 destinations marked on Blackpink’s itinerary so far:

10 Significant Achievements by Asian Artists in Billboard Chart History: From Kyu Sakamato to PSY to BLACKPINK

In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, here's a look back at some of the major strides made by Asian artists in chart history, from the 1960s to the 2020s.

Psy

While Asian artists have long been pioneers in modern music, a Billboard chart achievement can be career-defining, as both a reflection of individual commercial success and a symbol of further strides being made in global music. As the industry standard of measuring an artist’s mainstream influence, the Billboard charts have included superstars like BTS and BLACKPINK setting new standards for Asian artists in recent years — although the global rise of K-pop does not tell the full story of Asian music breaking through in North America. The first Hot 100 chart-topper by an Asian artist occurred decades earlier, and other artists made significant chart strides roughly a decade before K-pop fully boiled over into a mainstream phenomenon at the end of the 2010s.

Make no mistake: Asian artists still have an uphill battle when it comes to making noise on charts that dominantly feature songs and albums by Western musicians. Working to abide by music industry standards, transcend stereotypes and transmit genuine musical vision, the artists on this list broke down barriers in spite of setbacks and resistance. They’ve also caused waves of change by representing various Asian communities, including the AAPI community, showing the world all of the groundbreaking art (and big hits) that Asian performers can achieve.   In honor of AAPI Heritage Month in May, we’re highlighting 10 significant achievements by Asian artists in the history of the Billboard charts. Although this is hardly an exhaustive list featuring every notable chart achievement, these 10 stand out as momentous wins across sounds and styles. From CL’s solo debut to GOT7’s several World Albums W’s, these artists have helped pave the way for future generations of Asian and AAPI musicians.

Kyu Sakamoto’s “Sukiyaki” tops the Hot 100 (1963)

The Billboard Hot 100 launched in August 1958, and almost every high-ranking song on the chart was sung in English in its first few years. Enter Japanese crooner Kyu Sakamoto’s romantic ballad “Sukiyaki,” the Anglo-Saxonized version of the original title “Ue O Muite Arukou,” meaning “I Look Up As I Walk.” The single hit the top of the chart in the summer of 1963 as the first non-European song to reached No. 1. “Sukiyaki” maintained its top spot for a total of three weeks, but its catchy melody and cultural importance lingered for decades — it was the only song by an Asian artist to top the Hot 100 until 2020.

Wonder Girls' "Nobody" is the first K-pop song to enter the Hot 100 (2009)

Although it’s hard to envision mainstream music without K-pop today, Wonder Girls marked the start of the sound’s global rise through an all-English version of their hit, “Nobody.” In 2009, their track made its way onto the Hot 100, and peaked at No. 76, introducing their shiny production and polished sound to new audiences — and helping to change the commercial fortunes of Korean music on a global scale.

PSY’s “Gangnam Style” becomes the first top 10 smash by a South Korean artist (2012)

In 2012, PSY’s “Gangnam Style” exploded off of YouTube and impacted the pop charts with a seismic force that nobody could have predicted. The viral track permeated the mainstream through its grandiose hooks and the meme-worthy “horsey dance” choreography in its music video, which became the first of its kind to reach 1 billion views on YouTube. “Gangnam Style” spent a whopping 31 weeks on the Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 2 in October 2012 and enduring as PSY’s signature global hit — although he did score another Hot 100 top 10 hit, “Gentleman,” in 2013.

CL gets “Lifted” as the first female South Korean solo artist on the Hot 100 (2016)

After debuting as 2NE1’s fearless leader, Chaelin Lee, aka CL, watched her first English-language independent single “Lifted” debut at No. 94 on the Hot 100 in 2016, making her the first female Korean soloist to reach the chart. The confident track paid homage to Wu-Tang Clan’s “Method Man” in its chorus and generally portrayed CL as a crossover star, with a music video shot in New York City and Method Man himself joining in on the fun in its visuals.

Pikotaro's "PPAP” hits the Hot 100 in less than a minute (literally) (2016)

Daimaou Kosaka, also known by his comedian alter ego Pikotaro, composed a silly song titled “PPAP,” short for “Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen,” and published it on his YouTube channel in August 2016. The novelty jingle is only 45 seconds long — but was discovered and morphed into an Internet sensation after Justin Bieber tweeted the song out as his “favorite video on the Internet” that September. “PPAP” reached the Hot 100 shortly after, peaking at No. 77 and staying on the listing for four weeks; it remained the shortest song in the chart’s history for a few years, until Kid Cudi’s 2020 track “Beautiful Trip” clocked in at a mere 37 seconds.

BTS’s “Dynamite” makes history at No. 1 (2020)

While 2020 was a memorable year for several K-pop acts, BTS made it a record-setting one. After crashing the top 10 in years past, their infectious single “Dynamite” shot straight to No. 1 on the Hot 100 in September 2020, making BTS the first all South Korean musical act to ever top the chart. The superstar septet’s first all-English single spent 3 nonconsecutive weeks at the top, but “Dynamite” was only one piece of their huge chart year: before the end of 2020, BTS had also reached No. 1 as a guest on Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo’s “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat),” and again with their own single, “Life Goes On.”

Rosé of BLACKPINK's "On the Ground" becomes the highest-charting song by a Korean female soloist (2021)

Following the footsteps of CL as a member of a K-pop girl group to also chart on her own, BLACKPINK’s Rosé released her solo track “On the Ground” in 2021, featuring a buzzy melody that was clearly distinct from BLACKPINK’s usual sound. The track hit No. 70 on the Hot 100, making her debut song the highest-charting single by a Korean female soloist prior to the release of her solo project, R, in 2021.

Joji’s “Glimpse of Us” scores the first top 10 debut for an Asian solo act on the Hot 100 (2022)

Joji’s career was building to a breakthrough hit by the time he released “Glimpse of Us” from his third record, Smithereens — and the emotional track promptly debuted at No. 10 in June 2022, climbing to a No. 8 peak a month later. Its early success can largely be attributed to TikTok, where users generated countless video clips to the chorus, although “Glimpse of Us” also found a sizable streaming audience apart from the app. His track marked the first debut of an Asian soloist in the top 10 of the Hot 100, and Joji is also only the second Japanese artist to reach the top 10, after Kyu Sakamoto in 1963.

BLACKPINK scores the first Billboard 200 No. 1 for a K-pop girl group (2022)

BLACKPINK’s staying power has helped the quartet set several records across platforms, from being the first artist to hit 75 million subscribers on YouTube in June 2022 to being the first Asian act to headline Coachella in 2023. In September 2022, however, the group made history on the Billboard 200 albums chart when their second project Born Pink debuted at No. 1, making BLACKPINK the first K-pop girl group to top the chart. The upbeat “Hard to Love” and addictive “Pink Venom” on the record’s eight-song track list contributed to the album’s global success, and have since racked up hundreds of millions of streams.

GOT7 sets the World Albums chart record among K-pop acts

With a whopping 19 entries on the World Albums chart, the multi-continental K-pop septet has stayed prolific and earned consistent appreciation from global listeners. Out of the 19, GOT7 has 15 top 10 projects and four chart-toppers, including their Got It? EP in 2014 and Flight Log: Turbulence in 2016. Although GOT7 left JYP Entertainment in 2021, their syncopated, snappy sound continues to be beloved by fans worldwide, and the group scored a top 10 debut with their self-titled project in 2022.

BLACKPINK reported to release their comeback album in 2025 amidst members' ongoing solo endeavors

B LACKPINK is reported to have a comeback in 2025 as per South Korean media. Etoday reported on May 13, 2024, that Hana Securities cut its target stock price for YG Entertainment from 64,000 won to 58,000 won due to the dearth of musicians.

According to researcher Lee Ki-hoon of Hana Securities, earnings as a result of BLACKPINK's absence were not as strong as anticipated, leading them to lower their prediction to about KRW 20 billion ($14.7 million) this year and KRW 90 billion ($66.4 million) the next year.

He further added that it is paramount that more than one new group debuts each year since the fluctuating stock price has caused concerns among investors due to BLACKPINK's hiatus.

Concurrently, BLACKPINK terminated its solo agreements with YG Entertainment and established its individual companies. However, as the band simply extended their group arrangement with the firm, the alleged comeback group release will fall within YG Entertainment's purview.

BLACKPINK members to have solo releases lined up for 2024

BLACKPINK members Jennie, Jisoo, Rosé, and Lisa terminated their exclusive solo contracts with YG Entertainment in December 2023 and called quits on their 7-year alliance with the company. However, the members decided to renew their contract as a group with the same company.

Jennie announced the official launch of her company ODDATELLIER (OA) on December 24, 2023, and stated that she would focus on solo endeavors in 2024. Following her bandmate, Lisa established her company LLOUD in February 2024 and delighted her fans with several solo projects such as joining the primary cast of HBO's The White Lotus , launching a new line with BULGARI, and more.

Later, Jisoo introduced her company BLISSOO on February 15, 2024, and officially posted her new appointment as Self Portrait's brand ambassador. This announcement was followed by reports of her filming in Seoul for her upcoming zombie K-drama Influenza.

Lisa then signed a partnership with American music house RCA Records and was reported to film a music video for her upcoming solo album. However, Rosé has not announced signing any agreement with any record label so far.

As of May 17, 2024, Rosé confirmed working on her solo music and shared a demo of her upcoming song Vampirehollie in February 2024. Since then there have been no updates about her album so far.

Meanwhile, in 2024, sales for the first quarter of YG Entertainment were KRW 87.3 billion ($64.4 million), 45% less than the same period the previous year. Operating profit was KRW 7 billion ($7.1 million), meaning the company was in the red (declining stock value).

The rationale is that substantial management sales were lacking, except for Treasure's Japanese tour and BABYMONSTER's single. Furthermore, the upfront costs of BABYMONSTER's investments were also included. Additionally, intangible asset amortization expenses from music copyright acquisitions and exclusive contracts were a strain.

In other news, BLACKPINK member Jennie was featured on Zico's single SPOT! which was released on April 26, 2024. She then attended the Met Gala on May 6, while BLACKPINK's Lisa was seen waving the chequered flag as the first K-pop artist at the Miami Grand Prix on the same day.

Rosé last attended Pharrell Williams' Tiffany & Co. Collection launch on May 3 while Jisoo was seen attending the Cartier event in Seoul a day earlier on May 2.

One Japanese Word Changed the Course of Her Career

Devin Halbal had amassed hundreds of thousands of TikTok followers with her inspirational videos. Then she went to Asia.

A young woman stands in front of promotional posters for a store.

By Jessica Roy

In January, the travel and fashion influencer Devin Halbal decided to take a trip to Kurashiki, a city in the Okayama Prefecture of Japan. Ms. Halbal, a Queens-born 26-year-old who goes by the username “Hal Baddie” on TikTok, had spent four years traveling around Europe with an extra-long selfie stick and a dream, sharing videos with hundreds of thousands of followers.

Ms. Halbal had become known for coining inspirational phrases, like “ doll check-in ” as a proud calling card to her fellow trans girls, and “ Met Gala behavior ,” for when you’re feeling and acting confident about what you’re wearing. Her fame seemed to peak in 2022 when she was profiled by W magazine and Rolling Stone, and invited on a brand trip to Ibiza by Loewe. But after globe-trotting and a few months off with friends in New York, she wanted to do more than “fashion and affirmations,” she said in a recent interview.

It was with this mind-set that she set off for Asia. Ms. Halbal said she loves finding places that are off the beaten path and close to nature — and Kurashiki, a small city of less than half a million people known as the birthplace of jeans in Japan , fit the bill.

She was experimenting, posting different types of travel videos. At the same time, she was learning Japanese, and there was one word she kept hearing everywhere: kudasai, which translates to “may I please have.”

“It kept on ringing in my head,” she said. “I would just be sitting down on a random Tuesday and I would just be thinking to myself: kudasai , kudasai .” She decided to make a video of herself using the word while walking down the street: “Sushi, kudasai,” (sushi, please) she says in a sing-songy voice while strutting with her selfie stick. “Ocha, kudasai.” (Tea, please.)

To date, the video has gotten more than 13.5 million views.

“I had no idea, out of all my content, that the one video that just goes super, super viral all throughout Asia is me saying five words,” Ms. Halbal said.

The video’s success convinced her to extend her stay in Japan; she went to Tokyo, Takamatsu, Mt. Fuji and Yamanashi, making videos about food , travel and the Japanese language. She made friends and volunteered on a farm . She started not just getting recognized on the street, but swarmed by fans . A quick trip to pick up some bubble tea became a two hour meet-and-greet. Then the fan accounts started cropping up, as did media coverage , calling her the “kudasai girl.”

“Now, ‘kudasai’ is the trend word in Japan,” a Japanese TikToker named Sorari said in a video posted last month, expressing surprise about how quickly and thoroughly Ms. Halbal’s content spread.

Ms. Halbal’s trip, originally planned for two weeks, turned into two months, and her reach expanded beyond Japan to other countries.

She started getting comments in Korean, Thai, Hindi, Nepali and Mandarin. “I’m like, ‘I have to do an Asia tour,’” she said. “What better way to continue learning about other cultures and continue learning about languages?”

Ms. Halbal attributes her success to the way she tries to actually speak the language and engage with different cultures wherever she goes. “I’m actually trying to pronounce the food in the way that they pronounce it — I’m not doing it with an American accent,” she said.

Last month, Ms. Halbal left Japan and traveled to Busan, South Korea. She’s still saying kudasai, but now she’s also started incorporating Korean into her vernacular, including the word for please, juseyo .

Now, the largest percentage of her followers on Instagram , where Ms. Halbal also shares her videos, are from the United States, but South Korea comes in second. At a recent meet-up at Korea University in Seoul, hundreds of fans crowded around her on the street, jostling to take selfies with her, or to give her food recommendations and ask her to speak in their language.

“Showcasing people’s food, showcasing people’s culture, in a way is a sense of community,” Ms. Halbal said. “You’re saying: I respect you, I value you and I value your food.”

She is continuing to tour Asia, with plans to potentially go to China, the Philippines and Malaysia. She said she was also weighing a permanent move to South Korea or Japan.

“I feel really at home here,” Ms. Halbal said. “People are so sweet. They treat me like I’m their family. So even though I’m ‘solo traveling,’ I never feel alone here.”

In South Korea, she said, some fans have started asking her to get into pop music.

“Especially in Korea, I think there’s a certain rhyme and cadence to the way that I’m speaking that they really want me to make music,” she said.

Is she ready to make the leap?

“I’m entering my K-pop star era,” Ms. Halbal teased.
