Great Ocean Walk

The Great Ocean Walk  is one of the most iconic long-distance walks in Australia. People in the know come from all over the world to hike and enjoy the incredible views of this remote and rugged coastline, journey through the natural beauty of the region, and witness Australian wildlife in its natural habitats.

You will begin your adventure in the quaint seaside village of Apollo Bay. From there you will walk along a coastline rich in history and learn about why so many anchors litter the beaches to this day. Along your 104km trek, you will visit picturesque waterfalls, hidden coves, and the lush forest paths of the Great Otway National Park, all the way to the grand Twelve Apostles. You will be able to dip your toes in the beautiful azure waters and take a rest at the top of massive cliffs. If you keep your eyes peeled you will be able to spot kangaroos munching in the pastures, black swamp wallabies hopping around, reptiles skittering across the path, or even a koala taking a nap high in a tree. For thousands of years, the original inhabitants of this land that now features the Great Ocean Walk were the Gadubanud Aboriginal tribe. The plateaus and coastlines were their home long before European settlers arrived. It’s believed that the Gadubanud tribe lived an abundant life here, with the rich environment providing plenty of food and shelter. There has been evidence found that the Gadabanuds hunted not only on land but with bark canoes along the rivers, lakes, estuaries, and even along the coastlines.

It wasn’t until 1846 that the Gadubanud were no longer able to avoid the incoming European settlers. Two previous attempts had been made by the Europeans to penetrate the thick rainforest, and finally, they succeeded at making contact with the tribe. Later that same year, a European surveying team was sent into the rainforest and subsequently murdered by the Gadubanud tribe, although no reason is known as to why this happened.

In August 1846, a retaliatory expedition was sent from Melbourne to avenge the European settlers who had been murdered; joining them was another Aboriginal tribe, the Gunditjmara. Seven people from the Gadubanud tribe were killed, now known as the Blanket Bay Massacre. Today, the Gunditjmara people are the traditional custodians of these lands, and some can still trace their ancestry back to the original Gadubanuds.

In 1974, the idea of the Great Ocean Road Walk was created with the hope of forming a unique coastal experience for travellers and as a way to protect the habitat that it passed through. It wasn’t until 1994 that the local community came together, over a few bottles of port, to develop the Great Ocean road hike into a feasible concept. Over the next 20 years, the community worked with environmental agencies and the Australian government to build this walk. Finally, in 2006, the idea came to fruition when Parks Victoria launched the Great Ocean Walk, which is now 104km long after a few extensions since it was opened to the public.

Shipwreck Coast Background

Early Explorer Matthew Flinders once said, “I have seldom seen a more fearful section of coastline.” He was referring to Shipwreck Coast along the Great Ocean Walk . There are few places in the world where you can find as many shipwrecks as along this coastline.

The ‘Eye of the Needle’ is the reason behind this deadly coastline, a narrow gap between Cape Otway and King Island. Many ships dared to risk threading this needle after spending long months upon the open ocean. It appears wide enough, at 80km wide, but even wizened sailors forgot or ignored that the mighty force of the Southern Ocean is forced through this passage, causing massive swells onto a continental shelf that is quite shallow. It was because of this that Cape Otway Lightstation was commissioned.

Johanna, Milanesia, Wreck Beach, and Loch Ard Gorge are all named after famous wrecks, and you can still see evidence of the wrecks on the beaches today. Evidence includes anchors buried in the sand or memorialised in rock, but occasionally you will catch a glimpse of something more.

Surf Coast Background

The Great Ocean Walk is naturally linked to the Surf Coast region, which offers more than just beautiful landscapes; the landscape provides a platform for the magnificent and daring sport of surfing. There are dozens of beaches along the Great Ocean Road known as some of the best in Australia where elite surfers come to test their skills.

Bells Beach is world-renowned for its two main breaks, the Bowl and Rincon. Every Easter, at Bells Beach, the Rip Curl Pro is held where only the best of the best come to compete. Another major surf spot, which can be seen along your walking holiday, is Johanna Beach. Johanna Beach has a huge beach break, which contributes to the steeply sloping ocean floor as well as the many reefs around Castle Cove. On rare occasions on really big swells you’ll find big wave surfers at Port Campbell, at the end of the walk, surfing swells up to 10 metres.

The surf coast is a playground for surfers, from beginner to pro, so watch for those colourful boards bopping along the waves.

Flora & Fauna

One would never assume that a landscape so close to the shore would have rich and diverse wildlife, but if you are willing to look carefully, then you will certainly find a magnificent habitat on both land and sea.

Once you start your walking holiday along the Great Ocean Walk, you will begin to see how diverse the habitat truly is. There are vast grasslands, thick wetlands, and of course the beaches! Numerous species of trees call the rainforest here their home. To name just a few; the famous eucalyptus the Mountain Ash the tallest flowering plant in the world, the scaly myrtle beech, and of course the tall Australian blackwoods. Vivid colours are on display in the Anglesea Heath. Among the wildflowers, you will find the blue coloured smoke bush, the red and yellow bush peas, and the reddish pink of the common heath. Furthermore, with 79 different species of orchid species present, this makes the Great Ocean Walk one of the most orchid-rich sites in all of Australia.

Australia is famous for its kangaroos, wallabies, and koalas. All of these adorable animals can be found along the Great Ocean Walk; it would be surprising if you didn’t see one! Mobs of kangaroos will be found munching on grass in pastures, and make sure to keep an eye out to see if they have a special passenger in their pouch! You will discover koalas usually high in the trees taking a nap, and those black swamp wallabies will regularly be hopping away before you can get your camera out.

Along the trail, you will see little scratch marks where the dirt has been dug up; this is the sign of the echidnas searching for its favourite snack, ants! Usually, you will find them after dusk, but if it is not too hot, then you catch them on the trail. Approach them carefully because at the first sign of danger they will curl up in a spiky ball.

Reptiles and amphibians also take advantage of the surrounding wetlands. The tiger snake is a common site to see with its black body with bright yellow stripes. If you happen to see one, stay still. They are not aggressive and will simply slither off unless provoked. The croaking of the pobblebonk frog, the Victorian smooth froglet, and the little brown tree frog will fill the air, and you may even see one if you look closely.

The birds that inhabit the Great Ocean Walk are extremely diverse! You may catch a glimpse of the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, hear the song of the Kookaburra (which sounds like laughter), and if you venture out at sunset near the Twelve Apostles, then you might be able to see some little penguins waddling along.

As the seasons change, some wildlife will migrate to or through the area. If you are willing to brave the winter, then you may be able to catch a glimpse of the whales passing through the area. Also, in April and October, thousands of mutton birds will nest on Muttonbird Island. You can observe them from unique viewing platforms nearby.

WHERE IS THE GREAT OCEAN WALK LOCATED?

The Great Ocean Walk is located between Apollo Bay and the Twelve Apostles This walk hugs the dramatic south-west coastline for more than 100kms, 105kms to be exact. It is approximately 200 kms from CBD Melbourne and will take around 2.5 hours by vehicle.

WHAT IS A SELF-GUIDED WALK?

A self-guided walk is designed for walkers who prefer to be independent. Travelling self-guided allows you to walk from place to place progressing from one accommodation to the next at your own pace with who you want when you want. You can Enjoy Worry-Free Navigation. Our detailed maps and route notes ensure that you’ll easily find your way, whether you’re a beginner or veteran explorer—no compass or GPS needed. The paths are signposted irregularly. However, it’s a reasonably well-defined trail, so with the comprehensive notes, no technical expertise is required. Our self-guided trips offer the freedom to enjoy the splendid isolation of the trail, without the heavy weight of a pack on your back.

WHAT LEVEL OF FITNESS DO YOU RECOMMEND?

We expect people to have a reasonable level of fitness. Regular physical exercise in the lead up to the trip is recommended. This can be from walking, cycling, going to the gym or a combination of these. You will walk an average of 18kms each day (there is a slight variance depending on which walking trip you choose to walk), but most of the walking is reasonably flat and undulating with a few hills. If you exercise regularly, have a moderate to good walking fitness level and feel capable of walking up to 6 to 8 hours a day, this walk is for you.

HOW CHALLENGING IS THE WALK?

The walking terrain is varied following clifftops, wide forest tracks, rough trails, beach traverses, including Wreck Beach, shaded forest canopy. It’s mostly relatively easy-going, flat stretches, some steady, challenging climbs and long downhill descents. The walk is moderate to challenging with some longer days. The end to end walks are a great opportunity for fit walkers to challenge themselves.

DO YOU HAVE AN INCENTIVE PROGRAM?

DO I HAVE TO PAY A SINGLE SUPPLEMENT FEE IF I'M A SOLO WALKER?

Australian hotel accommodations (like the ones we use) charge the same, or just about the same price, regardless of whether there is one or two people in the room. This means that to cover the cost of the accommodation for your trip we do need to pass on a single supplement surcharge. This isn’t a cost that we make any margin on and it is simply to cover the fact that the total room cost isn’t being apportioned over two walkers.

CAN YOU PROVIDE ME WITH A PERSONAL LOCATOR BEACON (EPIRB)?

If you are a solo walker we want to ensure that you are kept safe should an emergency situation arise. A fully refundable fee (upon return of the beacon) will apply. To find out more please contact our friendly team.

WHO SHOULD I CONTACT IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY SITUATION?

It is essential that you carry a mobile phone (or satellite phone) on this holiday. If you have any serious problems, please contact Australia’s emergency services directly on phone number 000. Please contact our support people on the ground if you need assistance that doesn’t require emergency services intervention. These numbers will be provided in your walk notes.

IF REQUIRED WILL THERE BE SUPPORT ON THE GROUND?

We know that you need 24/7 support and safety. You definitely won’t be on your own during this self-guided walking adventure. Our local partners are the best people to contact if you have an issue on the walk. They are just a call away to help out if needed, no matter where you are or what the hour is. Auswalk is also there to assist; we will monitor your progress and can be contacted. We have carefully planned every aspect of your journey, from the best walking to seamless luggage transfers that whisk your bags from accommodation to accommodation while you’re out walking so that you can walk hassle and stress-free.

WHAT TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION DO YOU PROVIDE?

All the accommodations have been chosen to reflect the character of the region. Accommodations can range from small local hotels, owner-run guest houses, to family-run bed and breakfast; you can be assured that wherever you stay, you will be warmly welcomed. Most importantly, accommodations are in great locations and have all the necessary facilities to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

CAN YOU CATER FOR SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS?

On our walks, we can cater for specific dietary requirements. Please kindly provide this information when completing your booking form and only provide us with a list of your allergies or those food items that you absolutely cannot eat.

WILL I HAVE WI-FI ACCESS?

Wi-Fi access will be available at most accommodations along the track.

HOW DO I GET ON AND OFF THE TRACK?

Some days you will walk directly out of your accommodation and or into your evening’s accommodation. On the days where this isn’t possible, we will provide the appropriate transfers for you on and off the track. Our transfer providers are locals and know the area you’re walking in intimately. In many cases, they offer a wealth of knowledge on your destination having lived there for many years (sometimes all their life).

WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE?

December through February is usually warm to hot with excellent swimming weather. Book well in advance for January due to the summer school holidays as the Great Ocean Road walk gets very busy. March through May is usually cooler, with long sunny days, perfect for walking. The winter months (June to August) are cool and sometimes stormy, providing exhilarating walking along the beaches. In winter, the hills are covered with pink heath, Victoria’s floral emblem. September and November are usually cool to warm and this is when most of the colourful wildflowers appear.

See the  Bureau of Meteorology’s  information about average temperatures and rainfall at different times of the year.

Chris’s Beacon Point

Overlooking Bass Strait is Chris’s Beacon Point Restaurant and Villas. It has been over 40 years since the original Chris’s Restaurant, a quaint restaurant in a small fishing village, was opened. Four decades have transformed Chris’s Restaurant into a top tourist destination where you cannot only get a delicious meal but where you can spend the night in a contemporary style apartment with dazzling views of the sea.

Apollo Bay Guest House

Located right next to the beach with only a short walk to local shops, restaurants, and cafes, Apollo Bay Guest House is the perfect place to rest after a long day. Enjoy the spectacular ocean views while sipping tea from your deck or kick back and watch a movie in your French Provincial style room.

Great Ocean Walk Retreat & Farmstay

Enjoy a relaxing and eco-friendly stay at the Great Ocean Walk Retreat & Farmstay. This farm by the sea carefully created each room to make the perfect destination for any traveller. Take in the stunning views of the countryside from your spacious and light-filled rooms.

The Cape Otway Lightstation Guesthouse

There is no better way than to get up close and personal with the ocean than by staying at possibly Australia’s most crucial light station. Spend the night in the Lightkeeper’s Cottage, the Lightstation Lodge, or a Lightstation Studio. The Southern Ocean will be lapping against your doorstep, and you will fall asleep to its rhythmic motion.

Transport from Melbourne and on the track:

During your walking holiday, walkers only wear lightweight daypacks. We will shuttle your luggage between your accommodations seamlessly as you walk to your next destination and have it waiting for you by the time that you arrive.

Guided-Tours

If you have chosen our guided walking holiday, then transport to and from Melbourne is included within your holiday package. We will pick you up in Melbourne and transfer you to Apollo Bay in one of our comfortable minibuses.

By Public Transport

For self guided walks we highly suggest taking public transportation to and from Melbourne instead of trying to find a place to leave your car during your walking holiday. To get from Melbourne to the start of your destination in Apollo Bay, you will need to take a combination of train and bus. You will begin your journey from Southern Cross Railway Station in Melbourne. Every 30 minutes, a train will leave towards Geelong for about $5-$8. This train will take you about one hour. Next, you will transfer from the Railway area to the Bus area in Geelong Station. The bus leaving to the Visitor Information Centre in Apollo Bay only three times a day, so make sure that you have a spot. It should cost around $10 and take about 2.5-3 hours.

If you prefer to drive to Apollo Bay from CBD Melbourne, take the freeway over Westgate bridge and drive out past Geelong.  Follow the M1 and signs to the Great Ocean Road. Once you on the famous road it’s straight sailing all the way to Apollo Bay.

The Great Ocean Walk has consistently pleasant weather year-round; the region as a whole is more temperate than the rest of Victoria. Warmer winters and cooler summers make it an enjoyable spot to get away to all year long. Keep in mind that each season provides a different aspect to your walking holiday, as well, although each new landscape of the walk will offer a different kind of environment.

Overall, the average temperature along the Great Ocean Walk ranges from 22°C to 6°C. In the summer (December to February) there will be little rainfall and higher temperatures. Sunny days make for pleasant walking weather and gorgeous pictures.

In the spring (September to November) there is an increase in rainfall, especially farther north. This rainfall makes for a fabulous time to explore the waterfalls in the area because of the higher and faster water levels. In addition, the walk has an abundance of greenery and colourful flowers in bloom.

Lastly, even winter has something to offer. Even though the temperatures are lower and the rainfall is at its highest, this is when the whale migration occurs. Grab a pair of binoculars and you may get to see these colossal beauties making their way along the coast.

  • Picnic lunch packed in an insulated container (when supplied)

  • Sunscreen (at least 15+)
  • 1 to 2 litres of water
  • First aid kit

Now that we have the essentials packed, it is time to think of those additional items that may be worth packing along with you. These may include and are not limited to:

  • Waterproof over-trousers
  • Camera (with an extra battery or sim cards)
  • Notebook and pen
  • Small torch
  • Walking stick
  • Thermos (for hot drinks)
  • Additional snacks

You will begin and end the Great Ocean Walk in the charming seaside village, Apollo Bay. This quaint village has all you will need to get you in the spirit of your walking holiday; it’s a perfect point for relaxation after you have completed your journey. Take a stroll down the beach, go surfing, and enjoy a tasty seafood meal and a delectable glass of wine at a local restaurant.

Marinier's Lookout

Located on private property, the landowners of this fantastic lookout have decided to share with the public. Dazzling views of Apollo Bay and as far east as Cape Patton can be seen. It’s perfect for a picnic; if you’re lucky, you might just see paragliders take off!

Crayfish Bay

An optional side-trip that you can choose to take on your walking holiday is out to Crayfish Bay. It used to house some small fishing shacks, but those were removed for the creation of the Otway National Park. This side trip is a lovely place to journey to at low tide on a sunny day. Picture time! It is also magnificent to visit during a storm; the churning waves and whipping winds are perfect for those seeking adventure.

Cape Otway Light Station

Built in 1848, the Cape Otway Lightstation was created to try and prevent the massive, deadly toll that this coast wrought on unassuming ships. When European settlers from England first began sweeping into the area, they found themselves “threading the needle” between Cape Otway and King Island to save time, but it quickly led to the loss of hundreds of lives. In 1994, this testament of strength became a tourist attraction where you can walk the grounds, tour the light station, and attend an informative talk on the history of the light station and the area.

Great Otway National Park

The Otways National Park will allow you to immerse yourself in one of the best rainforests that Australia has to offer. Breathe in the crisp, clean air as you observe the abundant flora and fauna that this region has to offer. Walk in the shade of the massive Mountain Ash trees and the giant tree ferns while keeping a lookout for exotic wildlife. You never know what critter may be high up in the trees or skittering along the path!

Station Beach

Incredible rock ledges with the beauty of Rainbow Falls in the distance, this and the massive swell close up is what makes Station Beach special. This beach is not one of the most frequented by tourists; actually no one but the walkers, it will be quiet and private, the perfect way to take in the scenery without all the fanfare of massive crowds.

Rainbow Falls

An optional side-trip available on your walking holiday is to Rainbow Falls. Located on the southern end of the remote Station Beach, you will be able to access the falls only if the tide is low. Crisp, clean spring water meets the ocean in a dazzling display of colour, giving the falls their name. This is an excellent side-trip if you are willing to extend your walking time on the walk.

Castle Cove

Castle Cove is famous for its surf and towering cliffs. Look for the peregrine falcons nesting high in the cliffs and take a leisurely stroll down this gorgeous beach. If the tide is low and the ocean is calm, you can access a hidden lagoon right around the corner. Caution: There may be unexpected large waves and ocean-rips present.

Named after a schooner that wrecked at the mouth of the Johanna River in 1843, Johanna is a gorgeous rural farming settlement with much to offer. Johanna combines rolling hills, lush rainforest, and an epic surf beach to create what you’d think would be a hotspot for tourism. Thankfully it is still very quiet as most visitors only want to see the Apostles. The serenity of this spot only adds to its appeal. Combined with  the discovery of dinosaur fossils near Castle Cove and the history of the Cape Otway Lightstation, and every traveller will surely find something interesting.

Milanesia Beach

Not many people get out to this remote location because it is one of the more difficult sections of the Great Ocean Walk to access. This hidden gem boasts rolling farmlands and spectacular cliffs that will lead you to an epic view over Milanesia Beach. Enjoy the peacefulness of the area by taking a moment to rest and soak up the impressive forest and scenery. Fun fact: Dinosaur fossils were discovered at Milanesia Beach! Put on your investigator’s hat because you may find the next one!

The Gables Lookout

Take a short, almost magical walk through the casuarina trees up to The Gables Lookout. The Gables Lookout is perched on the top of one of the highest sea cliffs in mainland Australia. You will be able to view Moonlight Head in the distance and the hypnotic lapping waters below. This is the perfect spot for birdwatching! Plus, if you come from June to September, then you may witness the whale migration and see one of these impressive creatures as they pass by.

Wreck Beach

350 stairs descend to Wreck Beach where you will be reminded as to why this coast used to be deadly to unsuspecting ships. You can see the anchors of the Marie Gabrielle and the Fiji still holding a vigil of their once powerful ships that were defeated by this mighty coast.

The Twelve Apostles

The extreme force that is Mother Nature created these massive pillars. Long ago, these limestone stacks or pillars were connected with the main cliffs along the beach. Over the years, wind and waves slowly chipped away at the rock until the Twelve Apostles were created. Not actually 12 pillars, but 8 (so far) stand at 45-metres tall. Their impressive display gathers the attention of tourists from around the world. You can learn from the informative displays along the boardwalk, climb down the Gibson Steps to the beach, and embrace the dynamic atmosphere of a beach well loved by humans and nature. Make sure to take the time to visit the Grotto, the Arch, the London Bridge, and the Bay of Islands! If you happen to come at dawn or dusk, you may also catch the sight of our favourite tuxedo-donning birds, penguins, making their way down the beach!

This village is bursting at the seams with incredible things to offer. Ten waterfalls just a few minutes away, lovely parks, and gorgeous beaches make up the outskirts of Lorne with restaurants and a spirited art community making up its centre. You can visit Qdos Arts to see their continually changing exhibit, the Great Ocean Road Heritage Centre for all the local history, and if you happen to come at the right time, then you can witness the Falls Music Festival and the Lorne Festival of The Performing Arts. Plus, if you come during May to September, then you will have a great opportunity for whale watching!

non-walking activites

The great ocean road heritage centre.

Did you know that the Great Ocean Road is considered the world’s largest war memorial? In 1919, over 3000 Australian soldiers returned to Australia and began the construction of the Great Ocean Road. In the Lorne Visitor Centre, you can explore the Great Ocean Road Heritage Centre’s permanent exhibition. Learn about the toils faced by the soldiers through interpretive displays to truly understand the significance of this massive road.

Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch

Join countless others in taking a picture of the most photographed location on the Great Ocean Road, the Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch. This arch was constructed to acknowledge the challenges faced by the persistent workers who created this road for us all. It is a phenomenal location to add a well-known landmark to your Instagram or to just stroll along.

Spas and Wellbeing

What better way to relax after a long day of walking than at a spa? Massages, oils, and soothing aromas will add a blissful end to an already fantastic day. Enjoy getting pampered at one of the many luxurious spas and wellness centres featured along the Great Ocean Road. Some of our favourites are Endota Spa, Seahorse Natural Therapies, and Apollo Bay Natural Health and Wellbeing.

Play a round of golf before or after your walking holiday. The Great Ocean Road boasts fantastic golf courses and clubhouses. The Sands, located in Torquay, hosts the annual PGA Tour event Surf Coast Knockout. More courses in the area such as Anglesea, Warrnambool, and Port Fairy sport well-manicured greens, natural sand traps, and the resident kangaroos acting as unofficial greenskeepers. This is a must do excursion for any golf lover.

The Great Ocean Road boasts the Surf Coast, one of the best destinations for surfing in the region. Bells Beach hosts the Rip Curl Pro competition each Easter where the worlds best surfers come to take on the challenge. There are many beaches along the Great Ocean Road where you can grab a surfing lesson from a company that will teach you the basics with a kind and patient attitude, so that you can get the most from the experience.

Art Galleries

The Great Ocean Road is home to a plethora of artists and galleries that will make any art connoisseur happy. Marvel at the extraordinary craftsmanship at the Warrnambool Art Gallery or take home a local piece from the Whale Bone Gallery. A piece of art is the perfect reminder of your walking holiday that you can hang on the wall to view every day!

You can’t go home from your walking holiday without a souvenir for either yourself or someone else! Lucky for you, the Great Ocean Road has a variety of stores from specialty shops to local markets that will please everyone. Boutiques, galleries, and souvenirs shops hold local crafts, produce, art, clothing and more. If you are big into surfing, head down to Surf Label Haven. Pick up the latest gear before heading out to catch some waves.

The Great Ocean Road is home to many fabulous festivals throughout the year. Sing along at the Port Fairy Folk Festival, Anglesea Music Festival, or the Falls Festival to get your groove on. Enjoy the creation of sublime art at the Lorne Festival of Performing Arts or the Sculpture Festival. Delight in the flavours of the region with the Toast to the Coast Food and Wine Festival or the Apollo Bay Seafood Festival. There is even a festival dedicated just for kids! With something for everyone, you will walk away with your heart a bit lighter.

Day 1 - Drive from Melbourne. Walk Apollo Bay to Shelly Beach

We depart Melbourne CBD at 8am, heading for the spectacular Great Ocean Road and Apollo Bay - the start of the Great Ocean Walk. Enjoy the first of many fresh picnic lunches for the week, get to know your walking companions and see if you can spot some Australian Fur Seals out on the rocks.

The walk today is relatively easy with some short sections of beach walking and a few hills. Keep an eye out for Koalas near Shelly beach!

Note, as we walk on the first afternoon, please wear your hiking clothes on the bus and bring your day pack ready to go. After our walk the bus will meet us at Shelly Beach carpark and we will drive to our accommodation in Apollo Bay.

Accommodation: Apollo Bay Motel (or similar)

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 1 - Drive from Melbourne. Walk Apollo Bay to Shelly Beach

Day 2 - Shelly Beach to Parker Inlet

Today the walk starts off by heading away from the coast and into towering forest of Mountain Ash, a characteristic feature of this part of the Great Otway National Park.

There are a few hills to negotiate before re-joining the coast at Blanket Bay. Blanket Bay is one of the few safe swimming locations along the walk.

After a relaxing lunch at Blanket Bay the track then meanders along cliff tops and through coastal forests to Parker Inlet. Look out for black wallabies, echidnas, black cockatoos and other wildlife along the way. We end out walk at the top of Parker Hill.

Accommodation: Johanna Seaside Cottages (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 2 - Shelly Beach to Parker Inlet

Day 3 - Parker Inlet to Castle Cove

Our path this morning will take us inland through manna gums towards Cape Otway. The trail then heads back to the coast and we pass Crayfish Bay with it's magnificent turquoise water. As we get closer to Cape Otway we begin to see glimpses of the lighthouse in the distance.

From Cape Otway the track winds its way through wind sculpted landscapes of sand dunes, coastal scrubland and magnificent calcified cliffs. As we come closer to Aire River Valley we will get some fantastic views down to the estuary where the Aire River meets the Southern Ocean and Glenaire Beach.

From Aire River we head inland for a bit, climbing up and around the next headland before rejoining the coastal track, with sweeping views of the rugged coastline. We end our day at Castle Cove lookout, surrounded by towering cliffs which have high archaeological significance.

Day 3 - Parker Inlet to Castle Cove

Day 4 - Castle Cove to Milanesia Track

A very varied day today, as we walk from Castle Cove along cliff tops, through heath-lands and forests, occasionally emerging to breathtaking views along the extensive coast. There are beautiful expanses of grass trees and, in spring, wonderful wildflower displays. You may be lucky to see Peregrine Falcons along this section.

Eventually the path emerges onto Johanna Beach, where we walk along one of Australia's best beaches with superb views and enormous crashing surf. From Johanna Beach the path heads through rolling hills inland, where you can expect to see Eastern Grey Kangaroos, towards Milanesia Track.

Day 4 - Castle Cove to Milanesia Track

Day 5 - Milanesia Track to Gables

The first highlight today is Milanesia Beach, which is one of those secret beaches not many people get to. The track then cuts through and alternates between farmland and isolated beach and sea cliffs with a roller coaster of ups and downs to reach Ryan's Den. From here you'll have breathtaking views all the way back to Cape Otway and west to Cape Volney.

From Ryan's Den the trail then continues through coastal forests over Cape Volney towards Moonlight Head. After a steep climb up to Moonlight Head the track dips down into a valley which will lead us to The Gables Lookout. The Gables lookout is perched on one of the highest sea cliffs in mainland Australia, where will end today's walk.

Day 5 - Milanesia Track to Gables

Day 6 - Gables to Gibson Steps

Today we will continue our walk from The Gables through a grove of casuarina trees to Wreck Beach. Here, at low tide, you can see the anchors of two of the many shipwrecks that lie submerged along this coast. Due to safety reasons, we will however take the high tide route to Devils Kitchen. From Devils Kitchen the trail hugs and meanders along the wild coastal cliffs, nicely protected by beautiful coastal heath, all the way to Princetown.

The wetlands around Princetown support a wide variety of bird life, where we will cross the Gellibrand River on a trestle bridge to embark on one of our last sections to the 12 Apostles. A pleasant walk through coastal scrub and escarpment will start to reveal stunning views of the looming Apostles.

We will end our walk today just before Gibson steps.

Accommodation: Loch Ard Motel (or similar)

Day 6 - Gables to Gibson Steps

Day 7 - Gibson Steps to 12 Apostles. Drive to Melbourne

This morning we take the short walk from just before Gibson steps to the Twelve Apostles visitor centre - the end of the Great Ocean Walk.

Here you'll have time to wander the boardwalks and viewing platforms before the rush of the crowds early in the morning. There is the option of a 15 minute helicopter flight to see the spectacular coastline and the 12 Apostles from the air.

We head to the fabulous Loch Ard Gorge for morning tea, before taking the inland route back to Melbourne. Pick up some take-away lunch (own expense) on the way and we will arrive back in the city by late afternoon.

How challenging is this walk?

The Great Ocean walk certainly has it’s challenges but we would class it as a moderate walk. There are hills, beach stretches and some short rocky sections, but all in all, the terrain is mostly moderate with moderate length walks.

Where should I stay in Melbourne?

With an early departure, we recommend a night in Melbourne for those coming from interstate or overseas. We recommend to our guests the following hotels. All the below hotels are within easy walking distance from the pick up location.

– Best Western Melbourne City on Spencer St

– Vibe Savoy Hotel Melbourne on Spencer St

– The Great Southern Hotel Melbourne on Spencer St

* Please note that there may not be any shops or cafes open (especially for weekend departures) and we recommend organising breakfast the night before.

About Walking Tours In General

How hard are the walks.

The difficulty of the walks ranges from tour to tour, from easy to challenging. We design all of our walking tours to be achievable for those with a moderate level of fitness. We do recommend doing some training before most tours, because physical activity is always more enjoyable if you are physically prepared. We will send you information about how to train when you book.

When on tour we find that a positive mental attitude is most important and that if you focus on the scenery, the company and the moment, and not on the kilometres, then you find yourself reaching your destination with little problem. You can always have a day or sometimes an afternoon off to relax if you feel like it. If you have any concerns about your fitness or ability to complete a walk, give us a call or send us an email and we can talk you through it.

Posted in: About Walking Tours In General

Do I have to twin-share accommodation? Can I have my own room?

Our tour prices are based on rooms being twin share (two single beds in one room) or double (one double/queen bed in a room, shared by a couple). If you are travelling alone, we will place you in a room with someone of the same gender. If you have opted for a single supplement, this means you will have your own room but we won’t always be able to guarantee your own bathroom and king/queen bed due to the types of accommodation we use for group bookings. Often we stay at 2 or 3 bedroom chalets so that we can cook and have a common area for the group to relax and mingle at the end of your days walk. If having your own bathroom is important, give us a ring and we will see if it is possible.

Will I hold up the group if I’m a slow walker?

We find a lot of people who haven’t been on a walking tour before worry about this, but it’s rarely an issue. We keep a comfortable steady pace with plenty of opportunities to rest and take in the scenery along the way. Usually the group will spread out over a couple of hundred metres as we walk.

Normal walking pace on a formed surface like a road or footpath is around 4.5 – 6 km per hour and we tend to average just over 3 km per hour on bush tracks. It’s not a stroll but it’s not a brisk walk either. If you feel you may be slower than this, try some longer training walks to increase your walking fitness.

What is the average age of Inspiration Outdoors’ guests?

About 80% of our walkers are aged between 45 – 75, but we welcome all adults on our tours. We get a roughly 60/40 female to male split.

Posted in: About Walking Tours In General , Day Walk FAQs

What’s the food like? Can you cater for my dietary needs?

We serve simple, nutritious and delicious food on tour prepared by our guides, using fresh and local ingredients as much as possible. Sometimes we also eat out at restaurants. Breakfast, morning tea, lunch, fresh fruit, pre-dinner nibbles and a two course evening meal are all included. We are happy to adapt our menu to suit many dietary needs including gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diets – please ask when you book.

Are your walking tours just for “bushwalkers”?

Our walks are for anyone who enjoys walking and nature – bushwalkers or not. Our walks are conducted in safe, supportive and fun environments and you don’t need specialised equipment or experience to undertake them. We give you information about what you will need to bring and how you should prepare for each tour and we’re always here to answer any questions or concerns.

Do I have to walk every day on tour?

Of course not – it’s your holiday and you should do what you feel! Relax at the accommodation, come for a drive, get dropped off in town or go for a stroll of your own. On some days there is also the opportunity to walk for part of the day. This last option depends on whether there is vehicle access to the track.

What do I have to carry when I walk?

Very little. A water bladder or bottles, lunch/snacks/fruit for the day. a rain jacket, some personal first aid supplies and, on some days, lunch. You will probably want a camera as well. We return to accommodation each evening so there is no need to carry a large backpack.

Not sure if this is the right tour for you?

At Inspiration Outdoors, we understand that choosing the right tour can be a difficult decision. That’s why we’re here to help make the process as smooth as possible. If you still have questions, give us a call or drop us a line. Whether it’s a question about the tour itinerary or your fitness level, our customer care team is ready to answer it. We have product specialists for every tour who are eager to share their knowledge and help you plan your next adventure.

3 Day Great Ocean walk

SUGGESTED PRE NIGHT ACCOMMODATION:  The Langham Melbourne

DEPARTURE TIME:  7.30am

TRAIL DETAILS: 6kms. 3 hours. Easy Grade 2.

TERRAIN: This walk stays high and behind the sea cliff for its full duration except where we descend to beautiful Crayfish Bay for a short break. There are a couple of sets of steps but mostly the track is very gently undulating with a firm, sandy surface.

WALK ITINERARY: Meet your guides at 7.30am at The Langham Melbourne. From here, we transfer to the Great Ocean Road with short stops along the way at Anglesea and Apollo Bay, before arriving at Parker River. Our first walk takes us to Point Franklin and Crayfish Bay. Crayfish Bay offers beautiful vistas and rock ledges hiding clear salt-water pools, and is often used for snorkelling and spear-fishing activities. The area used to house some beach shacks, occupied by local fishermen, but these were removed when the area became part of the National Park. This section of the Great Ocean Walk mostly follows the cliff line and affords superb views of the ocean where the foliage clears; we may also see koalas relaxing in the trees. The track is gently undulating, with a firm, sandy surface, interspersed with some sets of wooden steps/staircases. Afterwards, we transfer further to our accommodation at the stunning Johanna Seaside property. Tonight enjoy dinner prepared by our guides. Sit back and enjoy the company of your fellow companions.

Great-Ocean-Walk-Day-1

TRAIL DETAILS: 13km.  6 hours plus breaks. Medium to Hard Grade. Grade 3 Terrain.

TERRAIN: This walk commences in a forest setting but becomes progressively steeper as we approach Milanesia Beach. After a short beach walk, there is some steady climbing on a firm track of compacted earth with several sets of steps. It remains undulating, on a stable surface, for the entire journey today, giving the benefit of distant views ahead and behind us.

FLEXIBLE WALKING: Optional longer walk available: there may be an option to add an additional 6km to today’s walk, to finish at Wreck Beach. Please discuss doing this option with your guide on evening of day 1.

WALK ITINERARY: This morning, enjoy breakfast, before setting out on our day’s walk, which will be the most challenging of the tour. We will depart the lodge at 830am to enable an early start on the trail. You will see spectacular and isolated areas of the Great Ocean Walk, traversing from Milanesia Gate to Moonlight Head on an undulating trail that is usually compact and stable. We begin surrounded by beautiful coastal forest as we trend downhill to the isolated tranquility of Milanesia Beach, where a short wander along the sand brings us to our first climb for the day – a steady ascent on a firm track with several sets of steps. The trail continues to undulate on a generally stable surface for the full journey, dissected by gullies, featuring Rough Tree Ferns and other lush flora, as well as drier sclerophyll forests. Our climbs regularly afford us spectacular views along the coast in both directions. An ascent of 138 steps and an additional small climb brings us to one of the official GOW campsites at Ryans Den. Typically our lunch spot, this high point provides an expansive outlook of our surrounds, and the chance to recharge our batteries for the 2nd half of today’s walk. We mostly follow the coastline from here, heading west toward Cape Volney and beyond, alternating between high points and shady gullies, with a final stepped climb to emerge onto Moonlight Head, where we can celebrate our achievements with incredible views once again. With our accommodation located nearby, we can take some time-out to freshen up and enjoy some afternoon tea. Later in the day, we can explore the area a little further, with a visit to nearby Wreck Beach to learn more of the local maritime history and view remnants of past shipwrecks, including well-preserved anchors. This involves approximately 1.5km of additional walking, as well as scaling a series of 300+ steps that lead to and from the beach. Tonight after dinner, relax and enjoy reflecting on your day, and the wonderful experience you shared with your fellow hikers.

Great-Ocean-Walk-Day-2

TRAIL DETAILS: 6km walk. 3 hours plus breaks. Easy Grade 2.

TERRAIN: Very similar gradient to Day 1 through coastal bushland. Along this section of track, various surface treatments have been used to keep us on a firm footing. Otherwise, it is a firm compacted surface throughout as we approach the Twelve Apostles. Several sets of stone steps are encountered, and at Gibson’s Steps, where we view the rock stacks Gog and Magog, there are around 50 steps descending to the beach.

WALK ITINERARY: After breakfast, we depart from the accommodation at 8:30am and drive a short distance west for our final walking experience of the tour: Princetown to Gibson’s Steps/12 Apostles. This dramatically beautiful final section of the walk is a fitting finale to our 3-days, starting on boardwalk that crosses the pristine wetlands of the Gellibrand River, which supports extensive bird and aquatic life. The trail winds through coastal scrub and follows the cliff tops on varying surfaces of compacted earth or board-walked path, providing fabulous views. The spectacular vistas ultimately include the famous Apostles, rising majestically from the Southern Ocean. Created by constant erosion of the limestone cliffs over millions of years, the rugged splendour of these ancient sea-stacks is striking to the eye. At Gibson’s Steps, we descend approximately 50 man-made steps to the beach to view the stunning limestone cliffs from below. We also experience a closer view of the impressive sea-stacks of Gog and Magog, not strictly included as Apostles, but worth a look, all the same. On completion of our morning walk, we enjoy a spectacular helicopter flight over the Apostles and surrounding coastline a fabulous way to gain a true perspective of the grandeur of this region. A short drive takes us to Loch Ard Gorge, where we enjoy our final lunch together on the beach, if conditions are suitable. We then return to Melbourne via the inland route, with a short break at the little hamlet of Winchelsea, usually arriving at The Langham Melbourne at approximately 5.30pm the end of a wonderful journey.

FINISH TIME: Arrive back at The Langham Melbourne at approximately 5.30pm

Bells Beach Known for its massive waves, Bells Beach is a famous surf beach and an Australian icon.

Great Otway National Park As you travel along the Great Ocean Road, you'll have the opportunity to spot wildlife such as koalas, kangaroos, and native birds in the Great Otway National Park.

The Twelve Apostles

The Twelve Apostles is one of the most iconic attractions in Victoria, Australia, and a must-see destination when exploring the region. These limestone stacks rise up to 45 meters from the ocean, and there are currently eight remaining.

The limestone cliffs were formed over 20 million years ago, during a period when the area was covered by a shallow sea. Over time, the accumulation of marine organisms, including shells and coral, built up on the ocean floor and solidified into limestone.

Around 10 million years ago, the land began to rise, and the sea retreated. This left the limestone exposed to the elements, including the waves and wind. Over time, the constant pounding of the waves and the wind caused the limestone to erode and weather. The soft limestone was eroded faster than the harder limestone, creating the unique rock formations that we see today.

Loch Ard Gorge

Loch Ard Gorge is a stunning natural attraction located along the Great Ocean Road. It is situated within the Port Campbell National Park and is named after the clipper ship Loch Ard which was wrecked nearby in 1878.

Getting to Loch Ard Gorge is easy, as it is located just a short drive from The Twelve Apostles. Visitors can access the gorge by car or tour bus. There is a large car park at the top of the cliff, which is just a short walk from the viewing platform overlooking the gorge.

While Loch Ard Gorge is a beautiful spot to take in the views, it is not recommended to swim in the water as the currents can be dangerous. The water can also be quite cold, even during the summer months.

To access the beach at Loch Ard Gorge, visitors must walk down a set of stairs that lead from the viewing platform to the beach below. The stairs can be a bit steep, and some visitors may find them difficult to navigate. However, once you reach the bottom, the beach is easily accessible and provides a great spot to explore the rock formations, caves, and arches.

Unfortunately, Loch Ard Gorge is not wheelchair accessible due to the steep stairs leading down to the beach. However, visitors can still enjoy the stunning views from the viewing platform at the top of the cliff. Additionally, there are several other wheelchair-accessible attractions nearby, such as The Twelve Apostles Visitors Centre.

The Gibson Steps

The Gibson Steps on the Great Ocean Road

The Gibson Steps are a popular attraction located along the Great Ocean Road. Visitors have the opportunity to walk down stone steps leading to the beach to get a ground level view of the towering rock formations, including the iconic Twelve Apostles.

The Gibson Steps are named after Hugh Gibson, who built the steps in the early 1900s to provide access to the beach for local fishermen. Today, the steps are a popular stop for tourists visiting the Great Ocean Road.

Visitors to the Gibson Steps can take in the breathtaking views of the towering limestone cliffs and the pounding waves of the Southern Ocean. The beach at the bottom of the steps is not suitable for swimming due to the strong currents, but it is a great spot for a walk or for taking photographs.

The Gibson Steps are easily accessible from the Great Ocean Road, and there is a small car park nearby for visitors. There is also a viewing platform at the top of the steps, which offers stunning views of the beach and the surrounding cliffs.

Apollo Bay

Apollo Bay is a charming coastal town located on the Great Ocean Road, 3 hours drive from Melbourne. It is a popular destination for day tours. With its stunning beaches, walking tails, and charming town center, it is a great spot to unwind and reconnect with nature.

The Apollo Bay Visitor Centre is open from 9am - 5pm daily a great place to stop and chat to one of the local volunteers who can help you get the most out of your time in the region.

Apollo Bay Beach The Apollo Bay Beach is a beautiful spot to soak up the sun and enjoy the ocean. It is also a great spot for swimming, surfing, and fishing.

Marriners Lookout Marriners Lookout is a stunning viewpoint located on a hill overlooking Apollo Bay. It provides panoramic views of the town, the ocean, and the surrounding mountains.

Cape Otway Lightstation The Cape Otway Lightstation is a historic lighthouse located on the edge of the Great Ocean Road. Families can climb to the top of the lighthouse for incredible views of the coast.

Apollo Bay Farmers Market If you happen to be in Apollo Bay on a Saturday morning, be sure to check out the Apollo Bay Farmers Market. It is a great spot to sample fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and homemade baked goods.

Otway Fly Treetop Adventures For an adrenaline-packed experience, families can head to Otway Fly Treetop Adventures. It is an eco-tourism attraction that features a treetop walkway, zip line tours, and a high ropes course.

Apollo Bay Seafood Festival If you happen to be in town during February or March, be sure to check out the Apollo Bay Seafood Festival. It is a celebration of the region's seafood industry, featuring fresh seafood, local wines, and live entertainment.

Getting to Apollo Bay from Melbourne The driving distance from Melbourne to Apollo Bay is approximately 195 kilometers (121 miles) via the Great Ocean Road. The driving time can vary depending on traffic and road conditions, but typically it takes around 3 hours to drive from Melbourne to Apollo Bay. However, if you want to take your time and enjoy the scenery along the way, it's recommended to allow for a full day for the journey.

DAY 1 – 9 km 3 hrs approx.

walking tours great ocean road

Morning tea – Anglesea

Walk: Apollo Bay to Shelly Beach

The walk officially starts by the Visitor Centre in Apollo Bay and you will travel the entire 105 km journey of the Great Ocean Walk. The trail winds out through the town to the beach-side suburb of Marengo, named by a passing French explorer. Marengo is home to a colony of Australian Fur Seals who hang out on rocks in the bay.

At several points along The Great Ocean Walk we have the choice of walking along the beaches or rock platforms at low tide or following the inland trail. Due to the unpredictable nature of the tides our guides will make a decision which is the safest route for the day.

Continuing onwards the countryside becomes more rural farmland. The trail continues up a small hill with a stile to climb over a fence. There are good views along the coast looking south-west towards Cape Otway and north-east over the ranges surrounding Apollo Bay. There is a conveniently placed rest bench, followed by a steep descent past The Blowhole. We   descend down to a beach where we typically rest before heading into a small section of delightful Otway rainforest. The area after Three Creeks Beach can get a bit boggy after rain so be prepared with appropriate footwear.

The trail enters low forest initially, and then starts to climb into the higher forests of the Great Otway National Park just above Shelly Beach. There is a junction on the trail which leads left down to Shelly Beach or right to the car park at Shelly Beach picnic area.

Meals : morning tea, lunch, dinner

Accommodation : Cape Otway Lightstation or Johanna Seaside Cottages

DAY 2 – 18 km 6 hrs approx.

The first section of today’s walk leads away from the coast and into the towering forests of Mountain Ash that characterise this part of the Great Otway National Park. At up to 65m high these are some of the biggest trees in Australia and walking through the heart of the giant  forest is a wonderful experience, though there are some hills to be negotiated.

The trail rejoins the coast at Blanket Bay, an isolated stretch of coast that was one of the original ports for unloading supplies for the Cape Otway Lightstation. Blanket Bay is one of the few safe swimming locations along the walk.

The track then meanders along the cliff tops and through coastal forests to the quiet haven of Parker  Inlet. Expect to see black wallaby, echidna, black cockatoo, rosella and other wildlife along the way.

Meals : breakfast, lunch and dinner

Accommodation:  Cape Otway Lightstation or Johanna Seaside Cottages

DAY 3 – 19 km 7 hrs approx.

At Parker Inlet you can walk along the water’s edge following rock shelves and beaches around Point Franklin or take the inland route. A worthwhile side trip is the short walk to idyllic Crayfish Bay, another safe swimming location. The trail then heads inland through manna gums to the Cape Otway  Lightstation, which is Australia’s oldest continuously operating lighthouse.

The walk from the lighthouse to Aire River winds its way through wind sculpted landscapes of sand dunes, coastal  scrub-land and magnificent calcified cliffs. At the Aire River Lookout there are great views down to the estuary where the Aire River meets the Southern Ocean and Glenaire Beach. It’s is a steady downhill walk to the Aire River Bridge which crosses the river to the picnic area where we have lunch and look out for koalas.

The trail continues through to Castle Cove following the cliff top, offering incredible views back along the coastline.

DAY 4 – 17 km 6 to 7 hrs

walking tours great ocean road

Located on a spectacular bend of the Great Ocean Road at Glenaire, Castle Cove is a beautiful beach surrounded by towering cliffs which have high archaeological significance, as dinosaur fossils have been found here.

From Castle Cove the track winds its way along the cliff tops, through heath-lands and forests, offering extensive views along the coast, the forest a mixture of manna gums, spring wildflowers and magnificent expanses of grass trees.

Eventually you will emerge onto the broad expanse of Johanna Beach and cross Johanna river. This beautiful beach is one of the best in Australia with superb views and enormous crashing surf.

The trail continues uphill as you walk high above the Johanna River valley’s farmland. Don’t forget to look back for spectacular coastal views. Some steep climbing through tea tree scrub and blue gum woodland to Milanesia Gate. Expect to see Eastern Grey Kangaroo in the grassy valleys out from Johanna Beach.

Accommodation:  Cape Otway Lightstation or Johanna Seaside Cottages

DAY 5 – 13 km 7.5 hrs approx.

walking tours great ocean road

The walk from Milanesia Gate to Ryan’s Den is the wildest and most challenging section of the entire track.

Isolated, rugged and hidden, Milanesia Beach receives few visitors and is all the more special for it. Look for the “beachcomber’s cottage” when you reach the beach. If time permits we will pause here and imagine life back then…

From here the trail continues along the high sea cliffs to Ryans Den with breathtaking views all the way back to Cape Otway, and west to Cape Volley.

Enjoy the view over lunch at the tip of Ryan’s Den hike-in campground before we continue along steep descents into valleys with sensational remote coastal sea cliff views and finish at Moonlight Head.

DAY 7 – 7 km 2.5 hrs

Our walk starts above the wetlands around Princetown which support a wide variety of bird life. We’ll walk down through the Gellibrand River Estuary and reconnect with the Great Ocean Walk on a new track section. This section replaces 1.5km of road walking with about 2km of pleasant walking through the coastal scrub and escarpment. We are now on the home stretch into Port Campbell National Park and the world  famous Twelve Apostles soon come into sight.

The Great Ocean Walk now finishes at Twelve Apostles car park, and we recommend, tides allowing, you descend Gibson’s Steps to view  Gog and Magog  (not strictly counted as two of The Twelve Apostles) up close from sea level.

The last few kilometers can be walked to reach The Twelve Apostles Visitor Centre where you can celebrate your achievements and view The Twelve Apostles up close.

We’ll then begin our return journey back towards Melbourne, stopping enroute to eat our packed lunch along the way. Our arrival time in the CBD outside the National Gallery of Victoria (same location as pick up) is approximately 5pm

Return transfer to Melbourne CBD central drop off location.

During this trip we stay at Cape Otway Lightstation or Johanna Seaside Cottages on nights 1-4 and then Southern Ocean Villas on nights 5 & 6.

Cape Otway Lightstation Cottages

These historic houses are located in one of the most spectacular settings found along the Great Ocean Road.

Cape Otway Lighthouse is the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia and considered the most significant. Built in 1848, the lighthouse known as the ‘Beacon of Hope’ sits 90 metres above the pristine ocean of Bass Strait.

Fully self-contained, this renovated property with open plan lounge and large kitchen provides a great place for groups to enjoy this unique location. The Lighthouse Lodge houses 4 bedrooms and 2 shared bathrooms. You can choose a single supplement if you would prefer not to share a room, this means you would have one room to yourself in the Lodge and would be sharing the bathroom with one or two other guests.

Hairdryers are unable to be used at the Light station as they require excessive electricity to operate. There is an emergency landline onsite, and Park Trek always carry a Satellite phone in case of emergencies. There is no WIFI and limited phone service at the Light station, a digital detox is something we promote on our Great Ocean Walk.

Johanna Seaside Cottages The cottages are situated in the heart of the GOR and offer a unique guest experience. Settled in the 1880s, the 260 hectare property is adjacent to Johanna Beach and offers great accommodation in a beautiful setting.

The fully self contained cottages include wood fires, spas and fully equipped kitchens. There is also an indoor heated pool onsite. Our groups use a combination of cottages depending on bedding configuration requirements.

Southern Ocean Villas

Located in a tranquil, landscaped environment on the edge of Port Campbell village, the villas are all fully self contained and ideal for small groups.

Each villa has an open plan kitchen and lounge/dining area along with a scenic outdoor deck. There is a separate laundry with washer and dryer and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Our groups usually stay in 3 bedroom, 2 bedroom villas for two nights.

We drop back into Melbourne outside the National Gallery of Victoria at 5pm. If you are flying out that night you’ll need to book a flight out after 6.30pm.

Single Supplement is available for $550.00 for 6 nights.

FINAL PAYMENT: The balance of the trip price is payable to the Company at least 60 days prior to departure. For reservations made 60 days or less from the departure date, full payment is due at the time of booking. If for any reason your final payment fails to reach Park Trek’s bank account or card/payments service provider by the due date, Park Trek reserves the right to treat the booking as cancelled and thus apply the relevant cancellation fee set out below.

Once you have paid the required deposit for your booking, any subsequent discounts or price reductions advertised by the Company or any third party will not be applied retrospectively.

Payment may be made by credit card, Australian debit card or via payments service providers authorised for use by Park Trek. We do not accept payment by any other method, including cheque or foreign debit cards.

4 – PRICING (INCLUSIONS AND EXCLUSIONS)

Our trip prices are subject to variable and seasonal pricing, which is standard practice in the travel industry.  This means trip prices may vary at any time depending on demand, market conditions and availability. It is possible different guests on the same trip may have paid different prices. If you like the price you see, your best option is to book it at that time. If you cancel to take advantage of a cheaper price, full cancellation conditions and penalties apply (see clause 6 Cancellation by a Guest).

The most up to date trip pricing is available through our reservations team, and generally on our website, however it is subject to minimum numbers. Where minimum numbers are not met by the balance payment due date, a small group surcharge may be offered to ensure the trip’s operation (see clause 9 Minimum Numbers). The prices quoted cover (and only cover) the following:

  • pick up and return from the collection and return point designated by the Company;
  • transport to the start of the relevant trip experience, including, if applicable, any ferry transfers;
  • twin share accommodation during the trip;
  • food and non-alcoholic beverages on nights catered by our guides;
  • all national parks and reserves entry fees; and
  • qualified personnel for the duration of the trip.

Any other cost is to be borne by you. No price reduction is available for guests who either elect to bring their own food or drink or choose not to avail themselves of the food or drink provided.

Without limitation, the following items are excluded from the pricing:

  • travel insurance (which we recommend);
  • pre and post walk departure travel arrangements, including accommodation and transport to the collection point and from the return point designated by the Company; and
  • any expenses not defined as an inclusion in the pricing, including tips and gratuities, optional excursions and activities, personal clothing, medical expenses, items of a personal nature and emergency evacuations.

While Park Trek will endeavour to honour its pricing, sometimes increases are outside our control. Park Trek reserve the right to amend trip prices at any time. Amendments may be necessary for many reasons including, but not limited to, increases in Award wages or related wages on-costs, increases in the charges from ground operators, exchange rate fluctuations, increased fuel costs, increased airfares, other increased transportation charges, or the need to engage alternative air or ground operators. Any increase in trip prices must be paid prior to the departure date.

You may bring your own alcohol (within reason); however you are responsible for carrying and disposing of its contents (i.e. “Leave No Trace”).  Final approval for any alcohol brought with you will be at the absolute discretion of our guides on the day of departure.

Your guides have absolute authority concerning the consumption of alcohol (including BYO alcohol) by any guest and may prohibit continued consumption of alcohol if guest(s) appear (in the opinion of the guides) drunk or become violent, quarrelsome, disorderly or behave indecently.

5 – SINGLE SUPPLEMENT

Our standard advertised prices are twin share and are based on two people sharing a room. Single rooms may be available upon payment of an additional single supplement fee. Solo guests are of course welcome on guided trips, and if you wish to share a room, we will try to find a roommate of the same gender. Allocations will be made in the order bookings are received. If there is no one for you to share with, or if you prefer a single room, you must pay the single supplement fee.

6 – CANCELLATION BY A GUEST

  • within 30 days of departure, no refund is available.

For bookings via third parties (e.g. online or third party agents) – you should refer to your booking agent first to ensure you understand their cancellation policy.

Cancellation by the guest will also take effect if:

  • the final balance of the trip booking is not received by the Company as required under clause 3 Payment Terms.

No refund is available once a trip has commenced and, for the avoidance of doubt, if you:

COVID-19 disruptions

The COVID-19 pandemic is a Force Majeure Event. If we must cancel a trip due to a Force Majeure Event, you can choose from the following options based on the payments you have already made:

  • If you have only made a deposit on your booking, you can choose to transfer your deposit to an alternative trip of your choosing, subject to availability. No cancellation fee or penalty will apply. You may be asked to pay a surcharge/price difference where applicable on the full cost of your trip where new pricing applies.
  • If you have paid in full, we will transfer you to a future trip within the same season, subject to availability at no cost. You may be asked to pay a surcharge/price difference where applicable on the full cost of your trip where new pricing applies.
  • Alternatively you can opt to hold your credit with Park Trek until you decide which itinerary you would like to select. You may be asked to pay a surcharge/price difference where applicable on the full cost of your trip where new season pricing applies.

If Park Trek is unable to run the trip due to COVID travel restrictions (i.e. domestic border closures or quarantine periods between states) or if guests can’t travel due to COVID travel restrictions, please refer to the above listed options. Guests can choose the option that best suits them.

Please note that the above COVID-19 impact booking conditions apply to Park Trek tours only, please consult your airline and other travel suppliers about their transfer fees and charges.

We do not refund for any travel restriction associated with COVID-19, and fear of travelling is not a valid COVID related issue, and our normal conditions apply. We may allow you to substitute your tour place with another guest arranged by you. For these and other reasons we strongly recommend that all guests obtain suitable travel insurance prior to their trip.

7 – BOOKING AMENDMENT BY A GUEST

If you wish to change your booking, you must notify the Company in writing as soon as possible. Once the Company receives your notice, the change will take effect subject to the following:

  • one amendment within the same tour season can be made to your original booking (subject to availability), up to 60 days prior to the date of the original scheduled departure, at no cost;
  • if the date change is made within 60 and 30 days prior (no changes are available within 30 days) to the date of the original scheduled departure there is a charge of $250 per person;
  • any subsequent change up to 60 days prior to the date of the new departure will incur a non-refundable fee of $150 per person (or $200 for any further change); or
  • if the date change is to another trip or tour season an additional charge of $150 per person may apply and you may incur additional costs for any difference in pricing and be required to pay those additional costs on the date the change is affected.

We will do our best to change your booking to your preferred date, but it may not always be possible.

We understand sometimes circumstances may prevent you from joining your trip. For this reason, we strongly recommend that all guests obtain suitable travel insurance prior to their trip.

8 – CANCELLATION BY THE COMPANY

Our business is subject to the forces of nature, and all the uncertainty and unpredictability associated with it. This is the very nature of outdoor adventure. Local conditions may necessitate changes to sightseeing, walking and driving routes, camping and accommodation locations. While every effort will be made to provide the service and experience offered in our brochure, website, or trip notes, we reserve the right to vary your itinerary. Under no circumstances will we knowingly put at risk the safety, health or wellbeing of our guests or guides.

If we must change arrangements, we will endeavour to provide substitute arrangements of a similar standard. However, Park Trek is not liable for any itinerary interruptions due to a Force Majeure Event.

In the case of a Force Majeure Event, we may need to cancel a trip on short notice.  In some cases, this can occur after the trip has commenced. Your understanding and flexibility in this regard will be appreciated.

If we need to cancel a trip for any reason before it has commenced, we will provide you with the following options:

  • transferring to a replacement trip that complements your existing travel arrangements (subject to availability) or a to later departure date convenient to both parties;
  • a credit for the full value of the cancelled trip price to be applied against a future booking that can be used within 24 months; or
  • a full refund of the trip price, other than in the case of a Force Majeure Event.

Where your trip is cancelled by the Company, we will not be liable for any costs associated with travel to and from the designated trip departure pick up point.

For these and other reasons we strongly recommend that all guests obtain suitable travel insurance prior to their trip.

9 – MINIMUM NUMBERS

Guided group trips require minimum numbers to operate, and this varies from trip to trip. We may elect, at our discretion, to operate trips with small numbers. If numbers are particularly low, we may also elect to operate the trip with just one guide. We also reserve the right to nominate a small group surcharge where a trip has not reached minimum numbers or to cancel the trip. In the case of a trip cancellation owing to small numbers you will be given the option of:

  • transferring to a replacement trip that complements your existing travel arrangements (subject to availability) or a later date convenient to both parties;
  • a credit for the full value of the cancelled trip price to be applied with a 10% discount against a future booking departure that can be used within 24 months; or

You will not be entitled to claim any additional amounts or seek any compensation for any injury, loss, expenses or damage or for any loss of time or inconvenience which may result from such cancellation including but not limited to visa, passport and vaccination charges, gear purchases or non-refundable flights and taxes.

10 – TRAVEL INSURANCE

Park Trek strongly recommends that guests take out suitable travel insurance before or at the time of making any deposit or other final payments. When selecting a travel insurance product, please ensure it covers against, at a minimum, any loss associated with personal accidents or injury, medical expenses, emergency repatriation and personal liability, cancellation for any reason including illness, bereavement, delayed flights, lost luggage and personal effects and events of Force Majeure.

11 – INDEMNITY AND WAIVER OF LIABLITY

All guests must sign and return an electronic or paper indemnity form prior to arrival or on the morning prior to departure of the trip.  This form indemnifies the Company, its officers, directors, employees, servants, agents or consultants or any of them from and against all costs, claims, actions, demands and liability whatsoever and howsoever arising from or in any way connected with the trip (including any transportation to or from the area in which the trip occurs) including such costs, claims, actions, demands or statutory duty or otherwise on the part of the Company, or any of its officers, directors, employees, servants, agents or consultants, and including any liability in respect of or related to your death, personal injury or loss of or damage to any property owned or possessed by you, but excluding any liability in respect of which the Motor Accidents Insurance Board (as applicable) is bound to indemnify the Company, its officers, directors, employees, servants, agents or consultants pursuant to the Motor Accidents (Liabilities and Compensation) Act 1973 of Tasmania (or any equivalent legislation applicable in any other state or territory). By signing the indemnity form, you will also give the Company various acknowledgements including confirmation that you have been informed of the most appropriate form of footwear for the trip you are undertaking, and that travel insurance has been recommended to you by Park Trek. Please note on some tours we engage third party providers to undertake certain activities, in which case those third-party providers may also require our guests to sign a further indemnity prior to undertaking the relevant activity.

12 – EVACUATIONS

In rare circumstances, due to injury or unforeseen illness, we may need to evacuate you from a remote part of the trip.  Where an evacuation is deemed necessary by the Company, the full cost of evacuation will be borne by the guest, including but not limited to helicopter costs, any associated staff wages and ground transportation costs. As Australian legislation may in some circumstances prohibit domestic travel insurance providing any financial reimbursement for ambulance or air ambulance services, we strongly recommend guests:

  • take out specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider; and
  • take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.

These recommendations are made in the interests of your safety and giving you the best chance to have the most enjoyable experience possible. Arriving on the day of departure for any trip with inappropriate footwear or attire may result in forfeiting your trip without refund. If you are unsure whether your footwear and attire is suitable for your intended trip, please contact our reservations team for further advice.

Your safety is our first priority. It is your responsibility to carefully read the Park Trek trip notes and supporting information on our website and ensure you have adequate fitness for the proposed trip. If you have any doubts or concerns or are 69 years of age or older, we recommend that you consult your General Practitioner (GP) before your trip to obtain a medical certificate confirming that you are in good physical condition and that there are no known ailments or pre-existing medical conditions likely to prevent you from completing your trip. Collecting this information assists us to ensure an enjoyable and trouble-free trip for all parties. A failure to provide the required information may result in a non-refundable cancellation of your trip. The Company reserves the right in its absolute discretion to refuse a guest from participating in a trip on medical or fitness grounds, or to require a medical clearance form signed by a GP to allow a guest to participate in a trip.

Approximately 3.5 hours walking

After a restful night's sleep and a hearty breakfast, we set off on another day of exploration. This time, we meander through native stringybark forest, where the scent of eucalyptus fills the air.   If the tide allows, we descend onto Wreck Beach,a hidden gem that forms part of a treacherous coastline rich in maritime history and responsible for some 180 shipwrecks over the years. After lunch, we visit the enchanting rainforest trail of Melba Gully with towering Mountain Ash and Beech Myrtle with an understory of tree ferns and a soundscape of flowing waterfalls.

Back at our private eco-lodge, you'll have the opportunity to relax and rejuvenate with a soothing foot bath. Sip on bubbles and enjoy canapés before another delicious meal, perfectly complemented by local wines and beers. It's an evening of connection where we share tales of the trails before retiring to comfortable beds for a restful sleep.

As you savour another wholesome breakfast, the anticipation builds for the final leg of your journey. Today, we head to the Twelve Apostles, a collection of magnificent natural wonders that emerge slowly as the trail rises and falls. You'll know you've reached your destination when you arrive at the exclusive viewing platform reserved for walkers. Take in the breathtaking views and marvel at the sheer beauty of these iconic formations.

We then move on to a well-deserved lunch, rounding off our produce story at our local suppliers at Schulz Dairy before returning to Melbourne. Your journey along the Great Ocean Road has come full circle, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.

Twelve Apostles Lodge

At the end of a day out on track, the Twelve Apostles Lodge is a forest-hugged refuge three hours from Melbourne. This is where the foot spa awaits, rainforest showers, kitchen garden, dining room stocked with local wines, and your king bedroom with spacious ensuite.

Introductory to Moderate

The Great Ocean Walk is an Introductory to Moderate graded walk. It involves walking with a light day pack through undulating country for up to 7 hours a day at a moderate to steady pace. To enjoy this tour you will need a reasonable level of fitness. We suggest that at least 6 – 8 weeks prior to the walk, you begin walking for at least one hour each day at a reasonable pace. Speed is not the essence to bushwalking, rather stamina and confidence in your own abilities. Continuously walking at a steady pace is better than racing ahead and running out of steam before the end. We would strongly suggest that some hill walking be included in your preparation. To prepare, take every opportunity to walk instead of driving the car, and take the stairs where possible or walk up hills to build leg strength and fitness. Some may benefit from using walking poles to conserve energy along the way (these will be provided for your use).

Why Take One of Our Great Ocean Walk Tours?

Nancy

By Nancy on Oct 20, 2023

As you stand on the rugged cliffs, gazing at the endless expanse of the Southern Ocean, a feeling of awe washes over you. If this sounds like your idea of paradise, Walk91 offers a range of self-guided walks on the Great Ocean Road — an iconic coastal route.

If you’re an adventure seeker, a nature enthusiast, or simply someone who craves an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, a Great Ocean Walk tour is a dream come true. So today, we want to tell you why you should embark on this unforgettable journey with Walk91.

Whether you’ve done a portion of the Great Ocean Road before or are embarking on this route for the first time, we have plenty of advice — especially as we’ve been working on the trail for more than 15 years!

A good place to start is our Complete Guide to the Great Ocean Walk . But, for now, let’s take a look at the benefits of doing a tour with Walk91.

Experience the Breathtaking Beauty on the Great Ocean Walk

At Walk91, we understand the magnetic allure of the Great Ocean Road. The rugged coastline is home to some of the world’s most magnificent natural wonders, and our tours provide you with an up-close and personal experience of the Great Ocean Walk, the road’s pedestrian counterpart.

Whether you choose to walk along the cliff tops, stroll on secluded beaches, or explore lush rainforests, our self-guided walks offer a unique perspective of this incredible landscape.

You’ll have the chance to discover hidden coves, marvel at the iconic Twelve Apostles , and witness the beauty of Loch Ard Gorge. This is a chance to immerse yourself in nature’s splendor and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Unparalleled Flexibility on Your Great Ocean Road Walking Tour

One of the most appealing aspects of Walk91’s self-guided walks is the freedom they offer. Unlike guided tours, where you are bound by strict schedules and large groups, our tours allow you to set the pace and choose your own adventure.

You have the flexibility to start when you want, stop when you want, and take detours as you please. This means you can explore the Great Ocean Walk at your leisure, soaking in the scenery and enjoying moments of solitude or sharing joy with your loved ones.

It’s your walk, your way. Our self-guided tours of the Great Ocean Walk can be completed between three and 12 days, depending on the route you choose. Walk91 also offers custom packages of the Great Ocean Walk if you have something special in mind.

Self-guided Walks Tailored to Your Fitness Level

Another advantage of a self-guided walk is that it caters to a wide range of fitness levels. Whether you’re an experienced hiker, a casual walker, or somewhere in between, there’s a route for you.

Walk91 offers walks that vary in distance and difficulty, ensuring that everyone can experience the Great Ocean Road’s beauty. You can challenge yourself with longer, more strenuous routes, or opt for shorter, more leisurely walks.

No matter your fitness level, you’ll find a walk that suits you.

Connect with Nature and Wildlife on the Great Ocean Walk

The Great Ocean Road, and the smaller Great Ocean Walk are both teeming with native wildlife and plant life. With our self-guided tours, you can connect with nature on a deep level.

Discover things to do in the Otway Rainforest , where you’ll encounter towering eucalyptus trees and perhaps spot a curious koala lounging in the branches.

Further along the coastline, keep an eye out for native bird species and enjoy the occasional visit from a friendly wallaby.

The Great Ocean Walk is not just a journey; it’s an opportunity to be a part of the natural world and to appreciate its wonders. Read our Guide to the Great Ocean Walk’s Wildlife on our blog.

Discover Hidden Gems on the Great Ocean Walk

While the Twelve Apostles is undoubtedly the Great Ocean Walk’s most famous attraction, there are countless hidden gems along the way. Walk91’s self-guided tours will take you to lesser-known spots that are equally awe-inspiring.

From tranquil, secluded beaches to picturesque waterfalls and pristine rock pools, our routes reveal a side of the Great Ocean Road that many tourists miss. For example, there are several famous shipwrecks to discover on the Great Ocean Road .

These hidden gems provide a sense of serenity and allow you to escape the crowds, creating a more intimate and personal connection with the landscape.

Walking trails along the Great Ocean Road

There are many great walking trails along the Great Ocean Road, including the Surf Coast Walk, Great Ocean Walk, and trails in the Otway rainforest.

The Great Ocean Road region has many opportunities to set out on foot and explore this beautiful landscape. It’s not just the coast that is scenic along the Great Ocean Road, but the hinterland as well.

To explore the Great Ocean Road we recommend taking a tour from Melbourne. A Great Ocean Road day tour will allow you to see all the highlights of this scenic coastline in just one day. It’s also the most relaxing way to travel – with your own tour guide in the comfort of our touring buses.

However, if you like walking or hiking, the Great Ocean Road region is a wonderful place to explore. It is home to some of Victoria’s best walks. Plus, you can explore at your own pace, and take in all this region has to offer. Including beaches, cliffs, rainforest, big waves and many a scenic lookout.

Read on to learn more about the walking trails along the Great Ocean Road, and how you can explore them today!

Surf Coast Walk

The Surf Coast Walk along the Great Ocean Road is the place to explore clifftop lookouts, world famous surf beaches and even spot some wildlife, like birds and echidnas along the way. Starting at Point Impossible, the Surf Coast Walk traverses the coast to take in world famous surf breaks at Bells Beach, untouched natural forests in the Great Otway National Park, secluded beaches at Point Addis and the wildlife-filled Anglesea heathland.

Highlights of the Surf Coast Walk

  • Traversing the cliffs alongside Jan Juc for incredible ocean views
  • Stopping at Bells Beach to watch surfers ride wave after wave
  • Walking along the beach from Point Roadknight
  • Exploring the Aireys Inlet Lighthouse

How to get to the Surf Coast Walk

Located along the Great Ocean Road between Torquay and Airey’s Inlet is the 44km Surf Coast Walk. To get there from Melbourne is just over an hour’s drive along the M1 highway from the city.

Great Ocean Walk

The Great Ocean Walk is one of the best long distance walks in Victoria. The trail hugs the dramatic coastline between Apollo Bay and the Twelve Apostles along the Great Ocean Road. This is a trail which offers a variety of native flora and fauna as well as a rich history and beautiful remote beaches. Great Ocean Walk offers a completely different perspective of this coastline and the Southern Ocean – which you don’t get from driving the road.

Highlights of the Great Ocean Walk

  • Leaving civilisation behind to traverse an almost untouched coast
  • Coastal cliff top campsites with incredible ocean views
  • Descending Gibsons Steps to the beach
  • Finishing the walk at the famous 12 Apostles Lookout
  • How to get to the Great Ocean Walk

The Great Ocean Walk begins in Apollo Bay on the Great Ocean Road, and ends at the Twelve Apostles. To get there you can drive from Melbourne. There is the scenic coastal route, or you can take a more direct inland route. You can also catch a train and bus to get to Apollo Bay is you do not have a car.

Otway Rainforest trails

The Great Otway National Park stretches from Torquay alongside the famous Great Ocean Road and up into the Otways. To explore the section of National Park in the Otway Ranges there are a large number of walking trails.

You can walk amongst lush ferns to discover waterfalls such as Erskine Falls, Sheoak Falls, Triplet Falls, Hopetoun Falls and Kalimna Falls. Visit Maits Rest or Melba Gully to discover gorgeous fern gullies and the giant beech trees. Or visit the incredibly scenic plantation of towering Californian Redwoods hidden deep in the Otway Ranges.

Highlights of the Otway Rainforest trails

  • Walking amongst lush green ferns
  • Gazing up at towering eucalyptus trees
  • Discovering flowing waterfalls deep in the rainforest
  • Spotting creatures such as Black Snails or Glow Worms

How to get to the Otway Rainforest

The Otway Ranges are located on the Great Ocean Road, just past Apollo Bay. The easiest way to explore them is with a car, as there is some distance between the different trails.

10 Best Walks on the Great Ocean Road

' src=

While most people head off down the Great Ocean Road to explore by car, there are some incredible walks to do along the coast and in the Otways. From walking to hidden waterfalls in the rainforest to coastal viewpoints above the cliffs, there’s plenty of variety when it comes to walks on the Great Ocean Road.

It may not be a traditional walking destination in Victoria, but there’s certainly no shortage of trails. With short, easy strolls on boardwalks to longer hikes through the trees behind Lorne, everyone will find something to suit their fitness level. After exploring the Great Ocean Road numerous times over the last couple of years, I’ve ticked off many of the walks in the area.

In this guide, I’m going to run through the best walks on the Great Ocean Road, so you can plan to spend some time out in nature and on your feet.

About the Great Ocean Road

The famous Great Ocean Road coastal drive is one of Australia’s biggest attractions. The nearly 250 km long stretch of road runs from Torquay to Allansford along Victoria’s southwestern coast. The area is known for its stunning coastal views, surf beaches, laidback towns, dense Otway rainforest and hidden waterfalls .

While it’s known as a road trip adventure, there’s plenty of places to stop off and explore on foot. If you’re looking to head out on a walk, you’ll find everything from short easy strolls to waterfalls to longer hikes along the rugged coast. I’ve included a nice balance of both longer and shorter options below so you’ll be able to find something to suit your style.

There are of course two long distance trails on the Great Ocean Road: Surf Coast Walk and Great Ocean Walk . While both can be done in their full lengths, there are also options to do shorter day hikes on sections. I’ve included a few options below that include sections of both these trails, if you wanted to get a taste of either one.

Otherwise, if you wanted to do a full end to end of the Great Ocean Walk, you’ll find my guide here .

Where to Stay on the Great Ocean Road

No matter whether you’re camping or looking for a secluded bed and breakfast, the Great Ocean Road has a range of options along the stunning coastline. There’s plenty of towns to base yourself in with Torquay, Lorne, Apollo Bay and Port Campbell being the most popular choices. Check out some of my recommendations below:

Best Walks on the Great Ocean Road

If you’re looking to explore by foot on the Great Ocean Road, there are some great walks to do, from short rambles to waterfalls to longer coastal hikes with stunning views. Let’s take a look at some of the best walks on the Great Ocean Road!

Shorter Walks

For those with less time or only looking to do some easier walks, these five options offer something for everyone.

Maits Rest

Maits Rest Rainforest Walk

  • Distance: 800m loop
  • Time: 20 minutes
  • Trailhead: Maits Rest Carpark, 17km from Apollo Bay

This is a self-guided rainforest walk through the ancient trees of the Otways. While less than a kilometre long, the gentle loop walk takes you through one of the most beautiful parts of the rainforest.

I was incredibly surprised by the beauty of the place, with a well-maintained boardwalk and dirt track taking you past information boards. The towering trees and lush ferns are up to 300 years old, making it a truly memorable experience.

It’s definitely a walk on the Great Ocean Road that everyone can do, and I would highly recommend a quick stop here between Apollo Bay and Lavers Hill. While it’s often busy, there’s plenty of parking space.

Triplet Falls

Triplet Falls

  • Distance: 2km loop
  • Time: 30 minutes
  • Trailhead: Triplet Falls Carpark, 22km from Lavers Hill

One of the best walks in the Beech Forest area off the Great Ocean Road is Triplet Falls. While there are several waterfalls to explore in the area, this 2km loop walk to the wide cascade was one of my favourites.

The trail takes you down and around past the thundering falls in a very cool, damp and shady forest. Along the way there are a couple of viewing platforms to see the stunning three tiered cascades of Triplet Falls. There are some stairs on the loop to get back up to the carpark, but it’s still an easy-moderate walk.

The car park is accessed via Phillips Track, which is a dirt road but well-maintained for all vehicles.

Port Campbell Discovery Walk

Port Campbell Discovery Walk

  • Distance: 4.5km return
  • Time: 1.5 hours
  • Trailhead: Port Campbell Beach

Probably one of the most underrated and unknown walks on the Great Ocean Road, the Port Campbell Discovery Walk is perfect for those staying in town. It starts at the beach in town and goes down beside the caravan park until it crosses the suspension bridge to the other side of the river.

From there, it ascends the cliff top for a nice view over the town, before continuing around the headland. Along the way you’ll get views along the spectacular sea cliffs and 12 Apostles just further down the coast – a view few others will get elsewhere.

The trail finishes when it comes out at Two Bay Mile Road carpark, just off the Great Ocean Road. From here, you can simply turn around and head back to town. But there is actually access to a secluded beach from here as well, if you head down the marked track from the other side of the car park.

Wreck Beach

Wreck Beach and the Gables Lookout

  • Distance: 2km return for Wreck Beach and 2.6km return for the Gables Lookout
  • Time: 2-3 hours (if combining both)
  • Trailhead: Wreck Beach Carpark, 38km from Port Campbell

There are two walks to do from Wreck Beach Carpark off the Great Ocean Road. Technically, these are part of the Great Ocean Walk , so it gives you a nice taste of this much longer hike.

The main walk descends 350 steps down to Wreck Beach, then you simply walk along the beach to reach two anchors from ship wrecks, Marie Gabrielle  and the  Fiji . They represent reminders of the rough Southern Ocean which has swallowed up many a ship over the years.

It’s best done at low tide, when you can actually see the anchors up close.

In the opposite direction from the car park, you can also walk along to Gables Lookout. This beautiful lookout is on the Great Ocean Walk looking back along the rugged coast. This is a 2.6km return walk that is not too difficult, otherwise you can also drive closer to the lookout and walk just 400m to the lookout.

Loch Ard Gorge walk

Living On The Edge Walk at Loch Ard Gorge

  • Time: 1-1.5 hours
  • Trailhead: Loch Ard Gorge Carpark, 8km from Port Campbell

An overlooked walk on the Great Ocean Road, the Living On The Edge Trail at Loch Ard Gorge is worth your time. While most people simply go to Loch Ard Gorge to snap photos at the famous beach, there’s actually some spectacular coastal views along some of the lookouts above the cliffs.

From Loch Ard Gorge car park, head west on the road towards Thunder Cave. There’s a walking trail that heads off the road towards Mutton Bird Island Lookout. Then, it continues around to link back up to the main trail to Thunder Cave.

From there, you can walk further to Broken Head and then Sherbrooke Estuary. Then, walk back to the car park along the main trail. All up this is around 4.5km including side trips to the viewpoints, making it a nice sub-2 hour wander with beautiful views.

Longer Hikes

If you’re looking for something more serious or walks that will soak up a good part of your day, these walks on the Great Ocean Road are a bit longer.

Surfer at Bells Beach

Point Danger to Bells Beach on Surf Coast Walk

  • Distance: 6km one way
  • Time: 1.5-2 hours
  • Trailhead: Point Danger in Torquay or Bells Beach

While the Surf Coast Walk stretches for 44km from Torquay to Aireys Inlet, it’s easily broken into sections. One of the most beautiful parts of the walk goes from Point Danger on the edge of Torquay to Bells Beach. This takes in some stunning coastal scenery and provides the opportunity to watch surfers out in the water.

About halfway along this section, you can also admire the view from Bird Rock Lookout, which follows some of the early tracks surfers used to access the surf breaks before infrastructure was built.

There’s plenty of access points and carparks along this stretch, so you could either car shuffle with a friend or walk the section return, which would be 12km.

Lower Kalimna Falls

Lower Kalimna Falls

  • Distance: 6km return
  • Trailhead: Sheoak Picnic Area, 4.5km from Lorne

There are so many waterfalls near Lorne worth checking out, but this one is quite unique because you can actually walk behind the curtain of water.

The walking track is well-trafficked starting from the Sheoak Picnic Area, the start point of many waterfall hikes in the area. It’s not overly difficult, as it follows an old timber tramway through the forest.

The waterfall is definitely not as impressive at first sight as others near Lorne, but it’s a fun place to explore the cave behind the waterfall and watch as the water tumbles over.

You can either return the same way or continue onto Upper Kalimna Falls, which is another 2.4km return on top of the total distance.

Sheoak Falls

Sheoak Falls via Castle Rock

  • Distance: 9km loop
  • Time: 3 hours

This is definitely one of the best day hikes on the Great Ocean Road, plus it takes in some incredible views and an impressive waterfall all with minimal amount of people around.

Sheoak Falls can easily be accessed on the Great Ocean Road, but I recommend taking this longer walking option from Sheoak Picnic Area near Lorne. From here, I took the signposted trail to Swallow Cave and Sheoak Falls. There’s a nice side-trip to a lookout of the cave and cascades, then you can return to follow the trail, cross the creek and get down to Sheoak Falls. One way, this is about 3.5km.

You could return the same way, but I recommend taking the trail on your left which is a steep climb up out of the valley towards Castle Rock. To reach Castle Rock viewpoint, you have to follow a side trip down about 700m one way. The view from the lookout overlooks the Great Ocean Road and Cumberland River where it meets the sea.

Once you return to the main trail, continue until the intersection with Garvey Track. Then turn right which will take you back to the picnic area and carpark. This loop is about 9km all up.

Henderson Falls

Phantom Falls and Henderson Falls via The Canyon

  • Distance: 8.5km loop

Another fantastic loop walk on the Great Ocean Road, this waterfall walk near Lorne takes in multiple falls and some stunning forest. Beginning from Sheoak Picnic Area, it’s an easy ramble to Henderson Falls passing by Won Wondah Falls on the way.

There are a couple of wooden bridges to help you cross streams, before you finally emerge through the trees to this hidden waterfall. Then, you can continue on towards Phantom Falls through The Canyon.

The Canyon is a fun stretch of the trail passing large rocks and boulders. It does require a bit of scrambling and climbing through narrow passages, but is certainly enjoyable and a beautiful section of the forest. It’s doable for kids and relatively fit people.

You’ll then arrive soon after at Phantom Falls. At the top of the falls, you have to descend some stairs from a vehicle track to the bottom. From there, you can explore around the base and along the river.

To make this hike a loop, from Phantom Falls you can follow the trail along St George River. This is a well-maintained trail that descends down to Allenvale Road.

From here, unfortunately it’s a 2km walk along the road back to Sheoak Picnic Area. But the road is only used by a few locals and tourists heading to the waterfalls, so it’s not overly busy.

Parker Inlet

Blanket Bay to Parker Inlet on Great Ocean Walk

  • Distance: 4.5km one way
  • Trailhead: Blanket Bay Campground or Parker Hill Campsite

This is a section of the Great Ocean Walk , which offers beautiful views, a walk through coastal scrub and access to a hidden cove and beach. You can hike this in either direction, but traditionally the Great Ocean Walk goes west so it’s best to start in Blanket Bay.

Blanket Bay on the eastern side of Cape Otway is around 36km away from Apollo Bay. There is a campground there, which is perfect if you want to explore more of the secluded coast along the Great Ocean Road. From there, you can follow the Great Ocean Walk which is well signposted with yellow arrows.

It traces along the coast before heading steeply upwards through the forest to a nice lookout. From there, it’s a nice meander through the coastal scrub along the coast. Finally, you’ll emerge overlooking Parker Inlet. It’s a very steep descent to the inlet and beach, but it’s worth it to have the place usually to yourself.

Across the inlet, there is actually another campground above the cliff there called Parker Hill Campsite . This is another nice option for car camping or tents.

I’d recommend doing this walk return, which would be 9km all up for a nice day hike. Because otherwise, car shuffling would be quite annoying as Parker Hill and Blanket Bay are quite a distance off the Great Ocean Road.

Walking on the Great Ocean Road

Recommended Day Hiking Essentials

  • Proper footwear: It’s important to wear sturdy footwear while hiking. There are so many options on the market, but I’ve been impressed with the Keen Targhee III hiking boots over the last couple of years.
  • Daypack: A good daypack will help you carry all your things comfortably while on trail. I like my Osprey Tempest 30L daypack , which is perfect for a wide range of day hikes.
  • Hiking poles: For steep, rocky trails, hiking poles can be extremely useful in easing the strain and pressure on your body. I’ve used Helinox trekking poles for years and love how light and compact they are.
  • Hydration reservoir or bladder: Carrying enough water is important. I prefer to take a 3L hydration reservoir or bladder so I can sip on water throughout the day.
  • Personal Location Beacon: No hiker should head out on a trail without an emergency device. A PLB is a safety essential so that you can call for help whenever and wherever you are in the wilderness.
  • First aid kit: Another safety essential, you should always carry at least a basic first aid kit with you on any day hike.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
