Here’s your guide to big summer concerts in Utah

From downtown salt lake city to southern utah, musicians of every genre are set to perform..

(Isaac Hale | Special to The Tribune) Garth Brooks performs with his band during a stop on their stadium tour held at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City on Saturday, July 17, 2021. Brooks will return to Rice-Eccles for two shows, July 17 and 18, 2022.

After over two years of cancellations and financial instability, Utah’s music industry is slowly but surely building up again. This summer marks one of bouncing back, and many music festivals and events are returning for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Utah’s musical footprint is centered around Salt Lake City — with Red Butte Garden’s summer series, the Twilight Concert Series, and a wealth of concerts at Vivint Smart Home Arena and the Eccles Theater. But the big summer shows can also be found in West Valley City (at Usana Amphitheater and the Maverik Center), Park City, Ogden, and into southern Utah.

Here is a list of the festivals and lineups set to take place so far, through the summer and into early fall:

Salt Lake City

Twilight Concert Series • The five shows in this long-loved concert series will happen at the Gallivan Center (239 S. Main, Salt Lake City). Artists include Rainbow Kitten Surprise (July 14; sold out); Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen and Julien Baker (August 6); The Decemberists (August 11); Cuco (August 16) and Shakey Graves (September 2). Tickets are on sale now at 24tix.com.

(Capitol Records) Indie-folk band The Decemberists are scheduled to perform at Salt Lake City's Gallivan Center on August 11, 2022, as part of the Twilight Concert Series.

LoveLoud Festival • Returning after two years, this Utah-based event begun by Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds (who’s one of this year’s headliners) includes a Utah-oriented line-up: The Aces, David Archuleta, Neon Trees and Mat & Savanna Shaw, along with such national artists as WILLOW and Anitta. The event is set to take place on May 14 at Vivint Smart Home Arena, 301 W. South Temple, Salt Lake City. Tickets are now available.

Kilby Court Block Party • The third annual event will happen on May 13-14 at Library Square, 210 E. 400 South, Salt Lake City. The two-day event will be headlined by singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers. The event is entirely sold out.

(Frank Ockenfels | Dead Oceans) Alt-rock singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers will be the headline act for the third annual Kilby Court Block Party, scheduled for May 13-14, 2022, in Library Square in downtown Salt Lake City.

U92 Summer Jam • The hip-hop and rap music festival will be held on June 17 at Rio Tinto Stadium, 9370 S. State St., Sandy. Russ will headline the event, with support from artists Cordae, Vince Staples and Jnr Choi. Tickets are available to purchase on Rio Tinto’s website.

Utah Blues Festival • The 6th Utah Blues Festival will occur on June 10-11 at the Gallivan Center, 238 S. Main, Salt Lake City. Performers include local artist Eric Heideman, the Bennett Matteo Band, Marquise Knock, Vanessa Collier, Curtis Salgado and Ruthie Foster. Tickets are available to purchase on AXS .

Das Energi Festival • The well-known electronic music festival will feature performances from deadmau5 on Aug. 12 and Excision on Aug. 13, at the Great Saltair, 12408 W. Saltair Drive, Magna. More acts to be announced. Tickets are available now at eventbrite.com .

Red Butte Garden Summer Concert Series • The full slate of 30 shows is back this year, featuring a mix of artists from different genres — including Bonnie Raitt, The Black Crowes, Caamp, Trombone Shorty, Maren Morris and more. Tickets are now on sale , but prices vary according to show, and several are sold out. They’ll take place from May to September at the garden, 300 W. Wakara Way, Salt Lake City.

(Justen Williams | Blue Note Records) New Orleans musician Trombone Shorty is scheduled to perform June 29, 2022, at Red Butte Garden in Salt Lake City.

Ogden Twilight • Easily the most anticipated festival this summer, due to its caliber of headliners like Bleachers, Beach House, Lauv, Flume and more. There are 10 shows in total, taking place from June throughOctober, at the Ogden Amphitheater. Tickets are on sale now, but many of the shows like Bleachers, Beach House, Modest Mouse and Flume are already sold out.

(Carlotta Kohl | RCA Records) Jack Antonoff of Bleachers, which is scheduled to perform at Ogden Amphitheater in Ogden on June 21, 2022, as part of the 2022 Odgen Twilight Concert Series.

American Fork

Fork Fest • This festival features 28 bands on three stages, with food trucks. Performers include Ritt Momney, Ej Michels, Bri Ray and more. Tickets are now available and the event will take place on June 11 at Art Dye Park, 1000 N. 550 E. St., American Fork.

The line-up includes headliner Judah & The Lion, The National Parks, Jamestown Revival and more. Tickets can be purchased online at 24tix.com.

Deer Valley Music Festival • The Utah Symphony’s annual summer series, with shows between July 1 and August 6. Headliners include Stewart Copeland (drummer for The Police), Boyz II Men, Guster and Kristin Chenoweth. Tickets on sale at deervalleymusicfestival.org .

(Daniel Knighton | Utah Symphony) Stewart Copeland, founder and drummer for the legendary rock band The Police, will perform with the Utah Symphony on July 1, 2022, in the opening concert of the Deer Valley Music Festival.

Park City Song Summit • In this “anti-festival” music enthusiasts will find panels, live performances and more. Set to take place in Park City, September 7-10, with artists like Josh Ritter, Katie Pruitt, Joe Pug and Celisse. Tickets will go on sale on May 20 and the events will take place at various venues in Park City.

Fort Desolation Festival • Coining itself as a “adventure travel festival” this event at Cougar Ridge Resort in Torrey, Utah will happen from Aug. 12-14 and features performances from such artists as Amos Lee, Elle King and more. Check fortdesolation.com/fest for more information.

Country FanFest • This country music festival will happen over the course of four days, July 27-30. Performers include Chris Janson, Brooks & Dunn, Runaway June, Jimmie Allen and more. Passes to the festival are available for purchase now.

Moab Music Festival: This year marks the 30th anniversary of this festival, which prides itself on being “music in concert with the landscape” with jazz, chamber and classical music. Three pieces composed by Native American composers will headline this festival, which will take place from June to early September. Tickets are available to purchase on a per-concert basis.

13 Incredible Music Festivals in Utah | Salt Lake City & Beyond

When you think of a Utah festival, you probably think of the Sundance Film Festival. But, there are several music festivals in Utah that are worth knowing about too, and they range across all kinds of tastes and genres! These are the 13 best 2024 Utah festivals.

Like Colorado , Utah has several sites marked by red rocks, adding a surreal and magical atmosphere to many of its festival offerings.

Utah loves music and has embraced new genres like EDM and dance as well as hip hop on its festival scene. But it is also deeply proud of its historical Americana roots. Blues has seen a re-emergence here, and Bluegrass and Country are also well-represented.

utah music festival - raves in utah

Some of these Utah music festivals do not run over a conventional weekend. Many are extended as part of city programs. So, for example, you’ll encounter a festival running throughout the summer, but only on specific days. Others are attend-only, non-camping festivals.

Even so, the numerous outdoor venues invite lots of exploration, whether in a public park or in one of the state’s amazing natural amphitheaters. Here are some great festivals that you need to check out if you’re planning a visit to Utah. Also, be sure to read my guides on Top 50 USA Music Festivals & EDM Festivals USA for more festival adventures in 2023!

1) The Deer Valley Music Festival

Deer Valley Music Festival Utah

Credit: Deer Valley Music Festival Utah

When: July-August, 2024

Where: Park City, Utah

https://deervalleymusicfestival.org/

Deer Valley Music Festival already sets itself apart from any other music festival in Utah by its duration. Rather than run over a weekend or a few days, it actually takes place over several weeks. For five weeks in the summer, Park City hosts music programs for four nights a week. This is a classical music lover’s paradise, featuring performances from the Utah Symphony. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s only for lovers of orchestras.

The fun part of this festival is the guest lineup. https://utahbluessociety.org/the-utah-blues-festival

https://www.facebook.com/utahbluessociety/

Utah’s biggest and best blues music festival!

Blues seems to find an audience all over the world. So it’s strange that for a time blues were dangerously thin on the ground in Utah. This is ironic, as some of the Blues’ major icons got early audiences here.

Thankfully, the Utah Blues Society has worked to restore blues culture to the state, and today can boast the Utah Blues festival as a major annual event. The festival was launched in 2015, with the idea to gather the nation’s finest blues musicians on one stage over Father’s Day Weekend.

The festival runs an extensive set of side programs, including blues education in schools, a musician assistance fund, and a scholarship program. Expect to see some of the country’s best-known blues legends alongside the best of the young guns.

But the city itself is a pretty well-regarded shopping hub, and in summer it turns into a popular music festival destination. Downtown Ogden is where the great music and enthusiastic crowds come together for Ogden Twilight. Ogden Downtown is walkable and easily accessible from Salt Lake City via the Frontrunner Commuter Rail.

Each concert sells 8000 tickets at capacity, and the lineups range from edgy indie to rock to electronic. Blonde Redhead and Death Cab for Cutie have been among the big names showing up for the fans.

8) Moab Music Festival

Moab Music Festival

When: August-September, 2024

Where: Moab, Utah

https://moabmusicfest.org/

The Red Rocks of Utah are well known, in part because they seem to invite such a deep appreciation of nature. They also have become connected to music, given the abundance of music venues nestled within the red rock contexts of the Utah, and Arizona hills. Moab is one of these places, seemingly alien in some respects. It seemed an ideal space to kick up a music festival happening over two weeks in late summer. Moab prides itself on being predominantly acoustic-focused.

But there’s a lot more going on under the skin of this festival. For example, if you’re crafty enough, you could be one of the concertgoers who are wicked off via boat to a secret location for a special performance. There are a couple of other venues for other shows, too, for the less adventurous to enjoy. But the highlight is undoubtedly the festival-ending rafting trip which runs for several days, dotted with special musical performances along the route.

9) Salt Lake Twilight Concert Series

When: June-August, 2024

https://saltlakearts.org/twilightconcertseries/

This festival happens as a series of Thursday concerts that celebrate summer, great music, and great Utah outdoors. It’s been running for 30 years and is an annual city calendar highlight.

Pioneer Park is a popular public park for events and music festivals in Salt Lake City, and just as the sun begins to set, people gather on the green with picnic blankets, baskets, and wine to settle in for some top-class classics.

Food trucks park along the edges, vendors and refreshment stations pop up, and there’s a wonderful atmosphere of celebration in the air. And yet, there’s something about this particular set of concerts that feels more like an event. It’s not a typical concert in the park. There’s a real sense of excitement about these.

10) Lyceum Music Festival

Lyceum Music Festival

When: June, 2024

Where: American Fork, Utah

https://lyceummusicfestival.com/

Classical and orchestral music lovers aren’t forgotten in Utah.  Each year, students from the American Heritage School invite guests and top collaborators to prepare an annual program of classics. This is largely youth-focused but well worth a mention for those wanting to hear some orchestral magic from these young proteges. The festival also invites other students and their families to participate.

Key to the success of this amazing festival for Utah was the collaboration of the Utah Symphony, which often participates in the event. It’s a wonderful initiative well worthy of your support.

“LOVE music MORE with us at Zion National Park. LMF combines top music industry soloists and faculty including Utah Symphony musicians to create a unique orchestral music camp for students”

Music + concerts, music + concerts | stagecoach 2024: carin león makes history at country music festival.

country music tours in utah

Balladeer Carin León continues to carve out his place in Latin music as one of the most prominent acts in Mexican regional music, but he is also rapidly winning over the country music fandom, performing at the iconic Grand Ole Opry in Nashville in February and making history as the first artist to perform mainly in Spanish at the Stagecoach Country Music Festival this weekend.

“Long live Mexican, country, and all music, as it unites us the most,” León exclaimed to a roaring crowd during his performance at the Palomino Tent on Friday, April 26.

Mexican music artist Carin León performs before a packed crowd...

After his stint at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival , León took the stage for the third consecutive weekend at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. In a similar fashion to the last two weekends, he did it with an effortless swagger that resonated with fans who sang and danced along to hits such as “Que Vuelvas,” “La boda del Huitlacoche” and “Te Lo Agradezco.”

He didn’t just stick to performing in Spanish; his set transitioned into his collaborative tracks “It Was Always You (Siempre Fuiste Tú),” with Leon Bridges and “The One (Pero No Como Yo)” with Kane Brown, where he filled in and sang the English verses for his counterparts.

There was a special moment, too, when he invited  Ana Bárbara, the queen of Grupero Music, to join him to perform “Lo Busqué,” a song that they recently shared at the 36th annual Premio Lo Nuestro in Las Vegas earlier this year, where Bárbara accepted a Lifetime Achievement award.

‘Regional Mexican music is having a moment’

Stagecoach has increased the diversity of its performers over the years. It has featured several Latin acts, including Los Lobos, Alejandro Escovedo, The Mavericks, The Last Bandoleros, Star De Azlan, and Lindi Ortega. However, León’s inclusion on this year’s lineup is the first time Stagecoach has brought on a huge regional Mexican performer to do a set mainly in Spanish.

León is one of the several artists riding a wave of success thanks to the mass appeal of regional Mexican music, a catchall term for various Mexican genres such as mariachi, banda, corridos, norteño, sierreño and others.

Some performers, such as León, have a particular disdain for the term, saying that lumping several Mexican genres is a disservice to the individuality of the different music. He went so far as wearing a T-shirt with the phrase “F— Regional” onstage during his performance with Colombian singer-songwriter Camilo at the 20th annual Premios Juventud in Puerto Rico in July. León later clarified his feelings, adding that he finds the term confining as it’s no longer regional, extending past borders and social classes and trending to go global .

A 2023 Luminate  mid-year report  showed that regional Mexican music was the fastest-growing Latin subgenre (up 49% year-over-year) and produced some of the biggest Latin songs last year. It also reported a new trend that found that 17% of non-Hispanic listeners enjoy the genre.

It wasn’t just Latin music that experienced growth. A Luminate 2023 Year End Report  found that country was among the genres that grew the most, with Latin up 21.9% to 75.26 million units and country rising 21.8% to 92.19 million units.

Nathian Rodriguez, associate professor and associate director of the School of Journalism and Media Studies at San Diego State University, has taught classes examining how broader culture intersects with Latino/Latinx identity. Some of his courses include Bad Bunny & Cultural Media , Cardi B & Pop Culture Politics and Selena & Latinx Media Representation.

“Regional Mexican music is having a moment globally,” Rodriguez said. “People are not monolithic in the music they listen to, and they’re not only going to listen to country. They’re listening to everything, and Stagecoach is noticing that their audience is multicultural and multilingual, and that’s what they’re going to cater to.”

Stacy Vee, vice president of festival talent at Goldenvoice, said in a recent phone interview that bringing a more diverse lineup to the stage makes for a better festival overall. She said the acts have been well received, with some fans writing letters of support and appreciation.

“I want Stagecoach to be a presentation of creativity and to amplify voices who make country music from all walks of life,” she said. “I think it’s important that anybody who comes to Stagecoach can see themselves in the lineup.”

Vee said she and others at their parent company, Anschutz Entertainment Group, were impressed by León’s persona and music. She thought it fitting that he performed at Stagecoach, which led to him being added to Coachella.

“He’s breaking down so many barriers, selling out arenas, and he’s a massive star,” Vee said. “Since he’s been added to the lineup, he has been collaborating with artists in the country space, and I’m just in awe of what he is doing and where he’s going.”

Cultural overlaps

The collaborative success and overlapping interest among regional Mexican and country music can also be understood through history.

Latin performers have teamed up with country stars for decades. Some notable collaborations include Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson’s recording of “To All the Girls I Loved Before” and later for “Spanish Eyes.” There have also been plenty of Latin performers, such as Mexican-American singer Linda Ronstadt, who went on to produce country music successfully.

The growing global appeal of Mexican regional music brings León’s embrace of country music and his performance at Stagecoach into that historical lineage. It’s also a part of the lived experiences of country and Mexican regional music artists that carry into the production of their genres, which also has its own history.

Rodriguez grew up in Texas and took a required course on the state’s history that explored the many contributions from different cultural groups and how it affected its development. With Texas bordering Mexico and descendants of Spanish, Native Americans and other groups being present long before its statehood, the populations have inspired each other. Among the genres under regional Mexican is Tejano music, which combines Mexican-Spanish vocals with dance rhythms that originated from Czech and German genres such as polka.

“Whether you were white and country or Mexican and vaquero, you were still wearing boots, jeans, big belt buckles and cowboy hats,” Rodriguez said. “The two music styles, like country and regional Mexican, are also very similar in the topics they sang about and the instruments being used.”

Country and Mexican regional fans are finding common ground through the cowboy/cowgirl fashion aesthetic and performers like León, whose ballad anthems of lost love also resonate with each genre’s respective fans.

Liz Ley and Mary Simmons of Yucaipa are friends and showed up to catch León’s set. Ley doesn’t listen to country music, while Simmons enjoys both but is finding herself becoming more of a León fan now that he’s collaborating with country stars and incorporating English into his music.

“He’s bringing the other culture here, and he’s going both ways, and I love that,” Simmons said.

“He belongs here,” Ley added.

Music + concerts, music + concerts | stagecoach 2024: eric church’s performance gets backlash from fans.

Author

Not everyone was impressed with Eric Church’s Friday night headliner performance at the Stagecoach Country Music Festival , it seems, after many flocked to social media to express their disappointment in the set.

Eric Church might be the most disappointing festival headliner ive ever seen??? It’s like a gospel set?? I’m so lost. — kb (@KennethBaker97) April 27, 2024

The “Springsteen” and “Drink In My Hand” singer performed in front of a stained glass window -decorated stage with a gospel choir. Church mostly stuck to acoustic songs, many of which were covers.

As a huge fan, that was the most disappointing set I’ve ever experienced. — Michael (@dehardres) April 27, 2024

Much of the criticism revolved around the low-energy performance that rarely involved upbeat tempos or Church moving around the stage

Thank you! Music was beautiful but not the right venue! — msmilies☮️ (@msmiles13) April 27, 2024
Obviously Stagecoach didn’t learn their lesson from having Eric Church headline Friday night in 2016 and being a complete energy suck because he’s doing it again tonight. The stream not showing any crowd shots because they are probably leaving in droves 🤣 — Robert Wedge IV (@rtwedge4) April 27, 2024

Fans at Stagecoach shared videos that claim to show fans leaving Church’s performance early in droves.

@Stagecoach we paid $600 to see a headline where people are mass leaving… @ericchurch is a legend, but he hasn’t gotten off the stool and most songs are covers with the choir. This isn’t what we came for. pic.twitter.com/GcsMrqAIT7 — Anastassia Olmos (@StassiOlmos) April 27, 2024
This is the seen at Eric Church’s headliner set right now pic.twitter.com/ZBrtZx8z5G — Andrew Fig (@AndrewFig1010) April 27, 2024

Some fans disagreed with the rest, defending Church’s performance and applauding the singer for his authenticity.

Props to @ericchurch for keeping it real and bringing true artistry to @Stagecoach . He’s played there twice before so it was time to change it up. Masterful performance weaving in and out of spiritual tunes, soul tunes, hip hop, and his own songs. To all the haters, grow a pair. — Michael Millar (@michael_millar) April 27, 2024
Thought @ericchurch killed it tonight at @Stagecoach . I realize this isn’t a popular opinion on this Hellsite but if you recognize his extraordinary talent you’d realize how special this was. — Ray Zaborney (@raythemaverick) April 27, 2024

Guyton’s new single, a gentle ballad about a mother’s fierce love, opens with the heart-touching lines, “I see pictures of my mama, hangin’ on the wall/ She’s never looked so happy, and I’ve never looked so small/ Now I’m holdin’ you and I know what they say is true/ When a baby’s born that’s when a mother’s born too.”

Guyton and husband Grant Savoy welcomed their first child, son Grayson, in Feb. 2021 and the acoustic ballad’s moving lyric video features home movie footage of Guyton in the hospital cradling her then newborn and spending time with the now toddler. “Cuz I felt it before, but it wasn’t like this/ Ain’t a thing I wouldn’t do, ain’t a thing I wouldn’t give/ It’s the kind you fall into and never hit the bottom of/ It’s a scary love,” she sings on the chorus.

Music + concerts, music + concerts | stagecoach 2024: jelly roll, elle king wow during day 1 of country music festival.

country music tours in utah

The Stagecoach Country Music Festival kicked off at the Empire Polo Club in Indio on Friday, April 27. Here’s a quick look at some of the notable sets from the first day of the three-day festival, including Jelly Roll, Elle King and special guests like Lana Del Rey and T-Pain:

“I’m here representing the underdogs, the white trash, the ones who thought they never would make it in this life, that’s who I’m here for tonight,” Jelly Roll, the two-time Grammy nominated rapper gone country shouted Friday night to the sold-out crowd at the T-Mobile Mane Stage as he wrapped up “Halfway to Hell.”

For Roll, the journey to stardom has been long, but his Stagecoach debut marks a significant milestone in his career — one he’s been eagerly anticipating. His performance was a wild blend of rap, country, and covers, amplified by the presence of special guests like Ernest, Maddie & Tae, and T-Pain. In a touching moment, he also paid tribute to the late Toby Keith, an Oklahoma-based country legend who passed away in February from stomach cancer.

He made sure to bring his wife, Bunnie XO, and daughter, Bailee Ann, to the stage to express his heartfelt gratitude for his family. Addressing the crowd, he emphasized the pivotal role of fan support in his journey, noting that without it, generational curses would never have been broken.

“Without you, I wouldn’t be able to live out a dream that so many people once told me would never come true. Now, my eyes are set on coming back and headlining Stagecoach.”

Country rocker Elle King brought her signature sass and grooves to her sunset set, treating the audience to a mix of new music and covers.

While many attendees in the crowd were only familiar with a song or two, they quickly found themselves enjoying the entirety of her performance, particularly after hearing hits like “Ain’t Country By Choice” and “Tulsa.”

King also pleased fans by releasing a new single that dropped the same day titled “Baby Daddy’s Weekend,” which she proudly mentioned might be on an upcoming record.

Vincent Neil Emerson

One of Friday’s earlier performers, Vincent Neil Emerson, rocked the Palomino Stage with his clever lyricism and masterful guitar playing.

Playing songs like “Willie Nelson’s Wall,” which opens with the lyrics, “Well, I’m high as a fly on Willie Nelson’s wall/ And I can’t remember where I am at all/ And I don’t know where my mind has taken me/ My boots in my hand, and my hat on my feet,” the setlist was filled with songs that were rich in story and made for interesting listening even if Stagecoach was your first run-in with Emerson.

Paul Cauthen and Lana Del Rey

Rounding out his set at the Palomino Stage, Paul Cauthen brought out Lana Del Rey for a duet of The Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody.” The “Cocaine Country Dancing” singer had hinted at the surprise earlier after posting a picture of Del Rey and his wife on Instagram, but we couldn’t be sure that it was going to happen until the performance. After all, Del Rey did just spend the last two weeks headlining at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival .

Wyatt Flores

As Wyatt Flores took the stage, crowds of people cheered him on at the Palomino but due to some technical difficulties he was delayed 10 minutes. That didn’t keep fans from staying and cheering for the young Oklahoma-native. He kicked off his performance alongside his band featuring violins and keyboards that adds a warm tone to songs such as “Running Out Of Time,” “Milwaukee” and “Please Don’t Go.”

Before the band closed their set Flores took a moment to address his touring schedule and mental health, saying that lately he’s enjoyed being on the road more than he ever has. He added that he started writing music to cope with the dark times in his life but never expected it would resonate on the level that it has.

“It’s hard to come up onstage and swing these songs when I’m still trying to figure out what’s going on in my life,” Flores said. “But it’s the coolest thing to be part of your lives and I’m so happy to be there with you.”

Tim McGraw delivers country hits at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena

On april 25, 2024, award-winning country legend tim mcgraw delivered 20 songs in 90 minutes at a euphoric bridgestone arena..

country music tours in utah

There are country music superstars and then there's Tim McGraw.

A dozen years ago, the artist with ten chart-topping country albums toured stadiums across America with Kenny Chesney. On Thursday evening, a euphoric Bridgestone Arena was blistered with the impact of a show presented at a size and sound capable of working six blocks away across the Cumberland River at Nissan Stadium.

Accompanying the power chords of his 2013-released top-10 single "Truck Yeah" with stentorian drum kicks would be one thing. But then, there's McGraw's silhouette surrounded by a glowing red screen on a panoramic, 105-foot wide by 26-foot tall LED screen and a laser show blinding enough to rival Kane Brown, Lil Wayne, Bon Jovi, or Tiesto at their touring heights.

The cinema and drama aren't presented for a song about hearing Lil Wayne's "6 Foot 7 Foot" booming through a dark blue Ford F-150's subwoofers before a weekend dominated by "Friday night football, Saturday last call, Sunday hallelujah."

Yes, country music is most assuredly about the song. However, very few artists have parlayed their song styling into a quarter century of work as actors in films grossing over a half-billion dollars at the box office.

Thus, when McGraw performs songs like "Just To See You Smile," "Where The Green Grass Grows" and "Standing Room Only" -- the 2023 hit that titles his most recent album and current concert tour -- an impressive transference occurs.

McGraw connects, brings out an impressive special guest

Imagine that "Friday Night Lights"' Charles Billingsley and "1883"'s James Dillard Dutton are paired with Faith Hill's husband and a father of three, plus a country music crooner who has played well over 1,000 concerts in 25 years and had 90 percent of his hits in the top 10 of the genre's Billboard charts.

The songs connect differently.

Regardless of genre, great songs test an artist's ability to believe, not just the lyrics themselves. Instead, when delivering those songs' hooks and choruses, it's in metaphorically attaching them to your heartstrings and knowing they'll soar that makes them achieve extraordinary renown.

Concerning this notion, McGraw, though turning 57 in less than a week, is still ever the athlete.

At moments like performing his 1995 classic, "I Like It, I Love It," he approached the precision required to convey maximum passion through song as if he were his father, Tug McGraw, one pitch away from recording the final out of the 1980 World Series against the Kansas City Royals.

Mixing sports metaphors, "I Like It, I Love It" is so catchy that, in Nashville, it has served as the song played when the National Hockey League's Nashville Predators score at home in the same Bridgestone Arena in which he was performing.

Of course, because it's NHL playoff season and the Predators are in the hunt, on Thursday evening, McGraw brought out the Stanley Cup and offered his well wishes to the home team in their current series against the Vancouver Canucks.

McGraw showcases a mastery of his craft

At that moment, you realize that he will probably play a different song every four minutes and 20 songs in roughly 95 minutes onstage overall. In 25 percent less time, he's accomplished 75 percent more than most of his contemporaries as chart-topping country stars of the past three decades.

Dig in deep and realize that there's something to the notion that Tim McGraw isn't just singing country music. Instead, he's created a country-to-mainstream monoculture unto himself. There's a Western cowboy, a Southern soul crooner and a humble, kind husband and father present.

All three of these archetypes are the main characters in life as a play that has unfolded with as much perfect sculpting as many in attendance would believe McGraw still applies to maintaining his physique.

At a point early in the concert, McGraw performs a snippet of his 20-year-old country-to-hip-hop-to-pop crossover hit Nelly duet "Over and Over" that blends seamlessly into his mid-tempo 2007 track "Shotgun Rider."

A five-minute moment has spanned St. Louis hip-hop to countrified Los Angeles-inspired rock.

Almost 20,000 people—many of whom, if asked, aren't fans of any other rappers or, on the other side, probably don't consider The Eagles a country band—never stopped bobbing their heads and waving their hands in appreciation.

Dig even deeper and the father and husband appear when realizing that his openers were Texas-born country artist Abby Anderson and Grammy-winning country star Carly Pearce or that he performed soulful songs "One Bad Habit" and "Watch The Wind Blow By" to honor his wife, Faith Hill, plus playing the music video for his 2013 Taylor Swift and Keith Urban collaboration "Highway Don't Care" as a way to honor Swift's burgeoning mega-stardom.

McGraw, empathetically aware of the power of sharing his stage with prospective female role models and stars, impressively softens his towering humanity before the night's most stunning moment: the encore.

A stunning encore

Instead of the house lights coming on or the set's well-articulated lighting schemes being eschewed for spotlights, an overture was heard, and a well-lit, panoramic LED screen introduction highlighting key McGraw scenes from "1883" highlighted his performance of 2001's "The Cowboy In Me."

The edges blurred between the actor and the man at that point.

"Humble and Kind" was followed by an acapella encore, with the crowd heartily singing along, if only because the entire building knew that 2004's "Live Like You Were Dying"—a song that inarguably re-set the expectation of earnest songwriting and raw emotions and involving a solo performance by McGraw that would be worth the cost of the ticket alone—was next.

Impressively, McGraw still performs the Single of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2004 Country Music Association Awards and the 2004 Academy of Country Music Awards, as well as the 2004 Grammy winner for Best Country Song as if he's having a conversation about how his father's cancer journey impacted him while leaving enough space for your own life and stories to own emotional real estate in the song.

As the evening ended, like again, the athlete that appeared in various formats throughout the evening, McGraw pumped his fist and pounded his chest to symbolize that not just he had successfully performed another concert. Instead, it was as if we, together, as a team, had victoried for country music, America, the community we had created for two hours and hopefully in gaining the perspective, via his concert, to continue to struggle and succeed at living our most fulfilled lives.
