Carnival cruise ship rescues 25 people stranded off the coast of Mexico

A Carnival Cruise Line ship responded to a call from the U.S. Coast Guard and rescued 25 people stranded in a small boat off the coast of Mexico, the company announced Saturday.

The 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance had left Long Beach, California, on Friday and was heading toward Ensenada Mexico for a three-day sailing when the cruise ship's officers were informed by the Coast Guard "about a distress call involving a small vessel," a news release said.

The ship immediately routed toward the location of the vessel, provided by the USCG, and "quickly" rescued all 25 people on board, including three children, the company said.

The U.S. Coast Guard did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.

The rescued group was welcomed onto the cruise ship and given food, water, and medical assistance. Carnival coordinated with the Coast Guard to hand off the group.

The incident did not disrupt the Carnival Radiance's schedule, the company announced.

Hit-and-run cruise excursion crash traps 2 Tampa women in Mexico: ‘I need my babies home’

Women stuck in mexico after excursion injuries.

A relaxing cruise to Mexico turned into a nightmare for two women. They were on a scooter excursion when they were injured by a hit-and-run driver, and now, they're stuck in a hospital in Mexico.

TAMPA, Fla. - Two Tampa women are stranded in Mexico after a hit-and-run on scooters. Now, their families are desperate to bring them home.

Maria Ortega said her daughter, Natalia and Natalia's partner, Ashley, left on Monday for their first cruise together from Port of Tampa. The next day, Ortega received a call from Carnival that the women never re-boarded the cruise after a stop in Cozumel.

"About an hour later, my daughter somehow got ahold of me through someone's phone, and she told me they were in an accident. It was hit-and-run. They were being taken to the hospital. They were taken to San Miguel in Cozumel, a private hospital," she explained.

Ortega learned that the couple rented scooters from a third party in Mexico.

"My daughter has a broken arm. Her arm was sticking out and they just wrapped it up because she had no insurance," she said. "They've been trying to operate on her (Ashley's) foot and they keep telling her that it's not a surgery, but it is a surgery to clean her foot."

Because her daughter doesn't have health insurance, Natalia was discharged from the hospital.

Ortega said Ashley is awaiting surgery, but the hospital presented the couple with a hefty $10,000-$20,000 bill.

Ashley is awaiting surgery and Ortega says she can't leave unless she pays a $10,000-$20,000 bill in case insurance doesn't cover the cost of the operation.

"They will not let them leave until they come up with the money in case the insurance does not cover it. I need to be there. I need to know what's going on," she said.

To make matters worse, the two do not have their passports to fly home. Some Carnival cruise trips do not require passengers to bring a passport. But it is strongly recommended. Thursday, Ortega booked a flight out of TPA to help out in any way she could.

She said, "I need my babies home. Please help me get them home. I don't care if I have to get a passport. I need them home. I need them home."

2 Cruisers Stuck in Mexico without Passport, Insurance

Two Tampa-based passengers are stuck in Mexico without a passport or medical insurance and require care after becoming victims of a hit-and-run accident. Even though one requires surgery, the couple was discharged by the private hospital because they have no insurance.

Cozumel Mexico Cruise Ship

Natalia Ortega and her partner, Ashley, left the Port of Tampa on September 11 for their first cruise together.

During a port stop in Cozumel, Mexico, they rented scooters from a third-party provider the next day and found themselves involved in a hit-and-run accident.

Cruise Directors often plea with guests not to book scooters in ports like Cozumel or Nassau because of the frequent crashes.

Stuck in Mexico without Passport or Insurance

They were taken to a private hospital but did not receive adequate medical care due to a lack of insurance . Meanwhile, the hospital billed them between $10,000 and $20,000.

According to Natalia’s mother, Maria, Natalia needs surgery and has sustained injuries to her hand and foot. “My daughter has a broken arm,” she said.

“Her arm was sticking out and they just wrapped it up because she had no insurance. They’ve been trying to operate on her foot and they keep telling her that it’s not a surgery, but it is a surgery to clean her foot.”

Since Carnival Cruise Line wasn’t informed of their predicament, the ship unknowingly left without them .

However, the company contacted Maria about the two missing passengers the following day.

Shortly after, Natalia called her mother and informed her about the accident. Natalia mentioned that they were prohibited from leaving because they owed money to the hospital. “They will not let them leave until they come up with the money in case the insurance does not cover it,” Maria recalled.

Another complication that the couple is facing is the absence of their passports. Though not all Carnival cruises require passengers to bring their passports, it’s still highly recommended.

US Customs and Border Protection says, “Most cruises beginning and ending in the same location are considered “closed-loop,” meaning they begin and end at the same port in the United States and travel within the Western Hemisphere.”

Maria has booked a flight to Mexico to be with her daughter, though she remains unsure of how she can bring the two women home.

In an interview with Fox13 , she appealed to the public, “I need my babies home. Please help me get them home. I don’t care if I have to get a passport. I need them home.”

Jarring footage shows 2 Carnival cruise ships collide off coast of Mexico

Two Carnival cruise ships collided off the coast of Mexico Friday morning in a jarring incident that left at least one person injured.

The Carnival Glory and the Carnival Legend had an allision while near a port in Cozumel, the company confirmed in a statement.

"Carnival Glory was maneuvering to dock when it made contact with Carnival Legend which was already alongside," the cruise liner said. "We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship. We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel."

Photos of the vessels shared on Twitter reveal certain damage to the Carnival Glory.

Carnival said the one known passenger to sustain "minor" injuries was hurt while evacuating the dining room on decks three and four of the Carnival Glory.

The Carnival Glory is 952 feet long and can hold 2,980 passengers at capacity, with 1,150 crew members on board, according to the company's website. The Carnival Legend is a mildly bigger ship at 963 feet long. It can hold 2,124 passengers at capacity, with 930 crew members on board.

Despite damage sustained in the collision, the Glory is currently continuing its scheduled 7-day Western Caribbean cruise, which is set to arrive back at its origin port in New Orleans, La., on Dec. 22, according to Cruise Mapper.

The Legend is continuing a similar 7-day Western Caribbean cruise and is set to arrive back in Tampa, Fla., on Dec. 22.

6 Passengers Injured After 2 Carnival Cruise Ships Collide Near Port in Cozumel, Mexico

The Carnival Glory was "maneuvering to dock" when it crashed into the already-docked Carnival Legend

cruise passengers hurt in mexico

Two Carnival cruise ships were involved in a collision on Friday morning that left six passengers injured.

In a statement to PEOPLE, the cruise line said the “Carnival Glory was in the process of docking” when it collided with the already-docked Carnival Legend near the port of Cozumel, Mexico.

The company considered the incident to be an allision — when a moving vessel collides with a stationary object — between the two ships.

Shocking footage captured by several witnesses showed the moment where the Legend’s front end slowly glided into a portion of the Glory’s windows, sending debris from the crash into the ocean.

Despite the damages, which all seemed to be above the water line, Carnival says they don’t anticipate the collision to affect their travel plans.

“There is no impact to the ships’ itineraries,” the Carnival spokesperson says. “We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship.”

“We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel,” the spokesperson added.

The company also confirmed that six guests went to Carnival Glory’s medical center for evaluation after the collision but only suffered minor injuries.

Several passengers who were on the cruise ships at the time of the incident spoke to CNN and said they barely felt the collision, which they were told in separate onboard announcements was a result of currents or high winds.

Carnival Legend passenger Mary Anne McKinley told the outlet that “the crash wasn’t too bad,” and compared the feeling to “a big wave crashing into the ship.”

Carnival Glory passenger Maddison Haynes told CNN she thought the boat was rocking from choppy waves because guests had felt them the night prior.

“Last night we experienced some major motion on the boat so this morning we assumed something similar was happening,” Haynes explained. “We felt a jolt and didn’t really think anything of it.”

2 Carnival Cruise ships collide in Cozumel, Mexico; at least 6 people injured

Two Carnival Cruise ships collided at the port of Cozumel, Mexico, on Friday morning, causing damage to at least one of the ships and at least six reported injuries, according to the company.

Initially, there was only one reported minor injury of a Carnival Glory guest that occurred when a group was being evacuated from the dining room of one ship's decks 3 and 4. But the cruise line said that since its preliminary evaluation, six guests with minor injuries "have presented themselves to the Carnival Glory medical center for evaluation."

Makenna Morris, 21, from Salt Lake City, Utah, said that she was on the fourth deck of the Carnival Legend taking pictures when she noticed the Carnival Glory moving toward her ship. She said that as the Carnival Glory approached, she could hear passengers screaming as they prepared for the impact.

"I started hearing people yelling and screaming on the Royal Caribbean," Morris told NBC News. "That’s when I heard sounds of cracking and glass breaking.”

Morris also recalled hearing what sounded like scraping as the Carnival Glory made impact with the Carnival Legend.

“They ran into us and I was like 'holy crap'," Morris said. “The whole dining hall caved in and shattered.”

Carnival Cruise Line is an international cruise line and the largest one globally, according to the trade publication Cruise Market Watch.

Eight ships from various cruise lines were scheduled to dock at the Port of Cozumel on Friday. The Carnival Glory, which left its home port in New Orleans on Sunday, was scheduled to dock in the port at 10 a.m Friday, while the Carnival Legend was scheduled to dock at 8 a.m.

The ships' passengers have been advised to spend their day ashore in Cozumel.

As the omicron COVID-19 variant continues to show its resistance to vaccines, a small number of breakthrough cases have emerged on cruise ships over the past week. As a result, of the hundreds of vessels currently sailing, a handful from several major lines -- including Royal Caribbean , Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America -- were denied entry into Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao and other ports.

The most recent ports to stop passengers -- even ones who weren't positive -- from disembarking were Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan, prompting the Mexican government to step in.

On Monday, Carnival Panorama , which is currently in the middle of a seven-night Mexican Riviera voyage from Long Beach near Los Angeles, was denied entry at Puerto Vallarta, according to passengers on the sailing . Those onboard say the ship had five ill passengers and about 100 positive crew as of Monday.

The ship was also prevented from visiting Mazatlan Tuesday, which The Associated Press says caused the Mexican government to intervene.

Mexico's Health Department said it will allow passengers who test negative to disembark, as long as ships follow proper World Health Organization protocols, including wearing masks, social distancing, hand-washing and sanitizing.

Translated, a joint statement from Mexico's government and the country's public health secretary says Mexico will receive cruise ships that request to dock and provide medical assistance to ill passengers who require it.

The decision came in time to allow Holland America's Zuiderdam to call on the port of Guaymas on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

Zuiderdam, which is halfway through a 10-day cruise from San Diego, has about 2,000 passengers and crew onboard and reported that 30 -- two passengers and 28 crew members -- were affected. All are fully vaccinated and were either asymptomatic or showed only minor symptoms.

The latest outbreaks onboard ships have affected about 1% of their respective onboard populations, at least 90% of which are fully vaccinated per U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

Mexico has been one of the most consistently lenient countries throughout the pandemic in terms of travel restrictions. Recently, the U.S. State Department upped its travel warning to "reconsider travel," in part citing the nation's high number of COVID-19 cases.

Zuiderdam is due to call on Topolobampo on Wednesday and Mazatlan on Thursday. The sailing is slated to conclude on Jan. 2 in San Diego. Carnival Panorama is scheduled to call on Cabo San Lucas Wednesday with a sea day Thursday before arriving back in Long Beach on Friday.

Cruise ship hands out letter with strong warning to all passengers before drop off at popular tourist city

Cruise ship hands out letter with strong warning to all passengers before drop off at popular tourist city

The stark warning was given when the ship docked at ensenada, mexico.

A cruise ship captain took the time to pen an urgent warning to passengers when the ship docked in Mexico.

Carnival Cruises tour several different locations across the globe including the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska and Mexico (to name a few).

With the variety of places they go to in mind, it's understandable that the crew know about the locations they're visiting and will sometimes offer advice.

And the captain of one of the ships recently penned a letter to guests when the arrived in Ensenada.

Lion cub petting is a popular tourist attraction in many countries. (aroundtheworld.photography/Getty Stock)

A photo of an undated letter was uploaded to Reddit yesterday (Thursday, May 2).

It read: "As you get ready for our visit to Ensenada, we have an important advisory.

"You may encounter restaurants/attractions (not associated with the ship's shore excursions program) in the port of Ensenada that allow you to touch or otherwise interact with tiger cubs . For public health , safety, and environmental reasons, Carnival recommends that you do not partake in such attractions, including, but not limited to, tiger cub attractions."

On the Carnival Cruises website advertising attractions in Ensenada, tiger cub petting is not one of them. Instead they offer excursions like deep sea fishing, kayak tours, and a trip to the El Cielo Vineyard & Winery.

A cruise ship guest shared the photo of the letter on Reddit. (OMGLMAOWTF_com/Reddit)

People have since replied to the Reddit post explaining that sadly such tourist attractions like tiger cub petting isn't exclusive to Ensenada.

"It was the same in Cabo," one person replied on the thread. "We were told the cubs were drugged a bit to keep them docile. We never actually saw them but were warned several times. It’s really sad."

Another said of Ensenada: "All true. I was in Ensenada for a year and became friends with the barista next to the tiger club place, she gave me the whole rundown."

Meanwhile, others applauded Carnival for trying to deter people from visiting such trades.

One person penned: "This is a huge step in the right direction, I hope that they can also mention dolphins and whales in captivity considering Mexico can be pretty cruel with how they treat their animals. Seeing these beautiful creatures confined for the sake of convenience is heartbreaking."

"I really appreciate the sentiment of this, I just wish they also touched on animal welfare being a reason not to participate," added a second.

People applauded Carnival Cruises for issuing the advice. (AaronP/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images)

Echoing Carnival Cruises concerns, there are dozens of animal welfare groups across the globe who have spoken out against attractions like cub petting.

According to FOUR PAWS Australia , there are parts of South Africa that offer these kind of services and it comes will a series of risks.

As to what you can do to try stop these things, the charity encourages people to stay clear of any attractions, refuse to visit breeding or hunting farms, and to 'look for any sign of animal breeding, handling or animals who are put on show for visitors'.

Carnival Cruises has been approached for comment about the viral Reddit post.

22 cruise ship passengers robbed in Mexico

By John Blackstone

February 27, 2012 / 12:46 PM EST / CBS News

When the Carnival Splendor docked at Long Beach this weekend, passengers got off with a memorable, if unpleasant, vacation story: an encounter with a masked gunman.

Twenty-two passengers, who left the ship to hike a nature trail were robbed. No one was hurt.

Passenger Ladean Hilgenberg described the incident, "He said in Spanish, he wanted everything they had. This one fellow pulled his money out of his wallet, and he said, 'No, I want everything - backpacks and all.'"

The passengers were robbed of whatever they had on them, Kate Berry-Shoaf said. "Passports, cash, whatever was in their backpacks."

Judy Fronk said the robber also threatened the passengers with another weapon. He "pulled up his shirt to show the knife.

When the gunman wasn't looking Fronk took his picture. "I was really scared to be honest with you," Fronk said. "But at the same time, I was a little angry. Because we were just out minding our business, enjoying the day."

In a statement, the cruise line said, "Carnival sincerely apologizes to its guests for this very unfortunate and disturbing event."

Carnival also owns Costa Cruise Lines and is still recovering from the sinking of the Costa Concordia off the coast of Italy which killed 32 passengers.

Mexico has an image problem too. It has recently been combating worries about visitor safety with a series of commercials featuring enthusiastic returning tourists.

Mexico is expecting "52 million tourists this year," CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg said. "That number has not gone down it's gone up."

"But keep in mind," Greenberg said, "If you actually look at the incidents the number of incidents that have happened, the overwhelming statistics, the numbers are definitely in passengers' favor. It's not a problem for most Americans going to Mexico."

"In an issue like this, the liability goes right to the cruise line," Greenberg added. "Simply because while they sell the short excursions directly to their passengers, then they subcontract out to local tour operators. The liability still lies with the cruise ship. I'd be very surprised if they didn't put at least one security person on every bus at least on a short excursion."

Bill Of The Month

On the last full day of a Bahamas excursion, Vincent Wasney had three epileptic seizures. While being evacuated, he received a bill for expenses incurred during the cruise. Kristen Norman for KFF Health News hide caption

On the last full day of a Bahamas excursion, Vincent Wasney had three epileptic seizures. While being evacuated, he received a bill for expenses incurred during the cruise.

Vincent Wasney and his fiancée, Sarah Eberlein, had never visited the ocean. They'd never even been on a plane. But when they bought their first home in Saginaw, Michigan, in 2018, their real estate agent gifted them tickets for a Royal Caribbean cruise.

After two years of delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, they set sail in December 2022.

The couple chose a cruise destined for the Bahamas in part because it included a trip to CocoCay, a private island accessible to Royal Caribbean passengers that featured a water park, balloon rides, and an excursion swimming with pigs.

Bill of the Month is a crowdsourced investigation by KFF Health News and NPR that dissects and explains medical bills. Do you have an interesting medical bill you want to share with us? Tell us about it !

It was on that day on CocoCay when Wasney, 31, started feeling off, he said.

The next morning, as the couple made plans in their cabin for the last full day of the trip, Wasney made a pained noise. Eberlein saw him having a seizure in bed, with blood coming out of his mouth from biting his tongue. She opened their door to find help and happened upon another guest, who roused his wife, an emergency room physician.

Wasney was able to climb into a wheelchair brought by the ship's medical crew to take him down to the medical facility, where he was given anticonvulsants and fluids and monitored before being released.

Vincent had had seizures in the past, starting about ten years ago, but it had been a while since his last one. Imaging back then showed no tumors, and doctors concluded he was likely epileptic, he said. He took medicine initially, but after two years without another seizure, he said his doctors took him off the medicine to avoid liver damage.

Wasney had a second seizure on the ship a few hours later, back in his cabin. This time he stopped breathing, and Eberlein remembered his lips being so purple, they almost looked black. Again, she ran to find help but, in her haste, locked herself out. By the time the ship's medical team got into the cabin, Wasney was breathing again but had broken blood vessels along his chest and neck that he later said resembled tiger stripes.

Wasney was in the ship's medical center when he had a third seizure — a grand mal, which typically causes a loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions. By then, the ship was close enough to port that Wasney could be evacuated by rescue boat. He was put on a stretcher to be lowered by ropes off the side of the ship, with Eberlein climbing down a rope ladder to join him.

But before they disembarked, the bill came.

The patient: Vincent Wasney, 31, who was uninsured at the time.

Medical services: General and enhanced observation, a blood test, anticonvulsant medicine, and a fee for services performed outside the medical facility.

Service provider: Independence of the Seas Medical Center, the on-ship medical facility on the cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International .

Total bill: $2,500.22.

A mom's $97,000 question: How was an air-ambulance ride not medically necessary?

Shots - Health News

A mom's $97,000 question: how was an air-ambulance ride not medically necessary.

What gives: As part of Royal Caribbean's guest terms , cruise passengers "agree to pay in full" all expenses incurred on board by the end of the cruise, including those related to medical care. In addition, Royal Caribbean does not accept "land-based" health insurance plans.

Wasney said he was surprised to learn that, along with other charges like wireless internet, Royal Caribbean required he pay his medical bills before exiting the ship — even though he was being evacuated urgently.

"Are we being held hostage at this point?" Eberlein remembered asking. "Because, obviously, if he's had three seizures in 10 hours, it's an issue."

Wasney said he has little memory of being on the ship after his first seizure — seizures often leave victims groggy and disoriented for a few hours afterward.

But he certainly remembers being shown a bill, the bulk of which was the $2,500.22 in medical charges, while waiting for the rescue boat.

Still groggy, Wasney recalled saying he couldn't afford that and a cruise employee responding: "How much can you pay?"

They drained their bank accounts, including money saved for their next house payment, and maxed out Wasney's credit card but were still about $1,000 short, he said.

Ultimately, they were allowed to leave the ship. He later learned his card was overdrafted to cover the shortfall, he said.

Royal Caribbean International did not respond to multiple inquiries from KFF Health News.

Once on land, in Florida, Wasney was taken by ambulance to the emergency room at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he incurred thousands of dollars more in medical expenses.

He still isn't entirely sure what caused the seizures.

On the ship he was told it could have been extreme dehydration — and he said he does remember being extra thirsty on CocoCay. He also has mused whether trying escargot for the first time the night before could have played a role. Eberlein's mother is convinced the episode was connected to swimming with pigs, he said. And not to be discounted, Eberlein accidentally broke a pocket mirror three days before their trip.

Wasney, who works in a stone shop, was uninsured when they set sail. He said that one month before they embarked on their voyage, he finally felt he could afford the health plan offered through his employer and signed up, but the plan didn't start until January 2023, after their return.

They also lacked travel insurance. As inexperienced travelers, Wasney said, they thought it was for lost luggage and canceled trips, not unexpected medical expenses. And because the cruise was a gift, they were never prompted to buy coverage, which often happens when tickets are purchased.

When a quick telehealth visit yields multiple surprises beyond a big bill

When a quick telehealth visit yields multiple surprises beyond a big bill

The resolution: Wasney said the couple returned to Saginaw with essentially no money in their bank account, several thousand dollars of medical debt, and no idea how they would cover their mortgage payment. Because he was uninsured at the time of the cruise, Wasney did not try to collect reimbursement for the cruise bill from his new health plan when his coverage began weeks later.

The couple set up payment plans to cover the medical bills for Wasney's care after leaving the ship: one each with two doctors he saw at Broward Health, who billed separately from the hospital, and one with the ambulance company. He also made payments on a bill with Broward Health itself. Those plans do not charge interest.

But Broward Health said Wasney missed two payments to the hospital, and that bill was ultimately sent to collections.

In a statement, Broward Health spokesperson Nina Levine said Wasney's bill was reduced by 73% because he was uninsured.

"We do everything in our power to provide the best care with the least financial impact, but also cannot stress enough the importance of taking advantage of private and Affordable Care Act health insurance plans, as well as travel insurance, to lower risks associated with unplanned medical issues," she said.

The couple was able to make their house payment with $2,690 they raised through a GoFundMe campaign that Wasney set up. Wasney said a lot of that help came from family as well as friends he met playing disc golf, a sport he picked up during the pandemic.

"A bunch of people came through for us," Wasney said, still moved to tears by the generosity. "But there's still the hospital bill."

The takeaway: Billing practices differ by cruise line, but Joe Scott , chair of the cruise ship medicine section of the American College of Emergency Physicians, said medical charges are typically added to a cruise passenger's onboard account, which must be paid before leaving the ship. Individuals can then submit receipts to their insurers for possible reimbursement.

He recommended that those planning to take a cruise purchase travel insurance that specifically covers their trips. "This will facilitate reimbursement if they do incur charges and potentially cover a costly medical evacuation if needed," Scott said.

Royal Caribbean suggests that passengers who receive onboard care submit their paid bills to their health insurer for possible reimbursement. Many health plans do not cover medical services received on cruise ships, however. Medicare will sometimes cover medically necessary health care services on cruise ships, but not if the ship is more than six hours away from a U.S. port.

Travel insurance can be designed to address lots of out-of-town mishaps, like lost baggage or even transportation and lodging for a loved one to visit if a traveler is hospitalized.

Travel medical insurance, as well as plans that offer "emergency evacuation and repatriation," are two types that can specifically assist with medical emergencies. Such plans can be purchased individually. Credit cards may offer travel medical insurance among their benefits, as well.

But travel insurance plans come with limitations. For instance, they may not cover care associated with preexisting conditions or what the plans consider "risky" activities, such as rock climbing. Some plans also require that travelers file first with their primary health insurance before seeking reimbursement from travel insurance.

As with other insurance, be sure to read the fine print and understand how reimbursement works.

Wasney said that's what they plan to do before their next Royal Caribbean cruise. They'd like to go back to the Bahamas on basically the same trip, he said — there's a lot about CocoCay they didn't get to explore.

Virgin is facing a brand nightmare after its cruise giveaway went horribly wrong

  • Virgin Voyages faces backlash after a free cruise winner said she has to pay $8,000 in flight costs.
  • The cruise line's Australia voyages were canceled due to tensions in the Red Sea.
  • Brand experts say Virgin should cover flight costs or offer different prizes to maintain trust.

Insider Today

Virgin Voyages is dealing with a PR nightmare after a woman who won a free cruise said she'd have to pay $8,000 in flights to claim her prize.

The adults-only cruise line , owned by Richard Branson's Virgin Group, is known for giving away free prizes to promote its various international sailings across Australia, Europe, and the Caribbean.

An Australian woman, who used the pseudonym Morgan, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that she and other passengers were gifted free twin-share cruise vouchers while on a Virgin flight from Melbourne to her home in Tasmania in November.

Morgan said she used the voucher to book a cruise out of Brisbane for herself and her partner. However, in February, the company announced that all of its Australia voyages were canceled due to tensions in the Red Sea.

A spokesperson for Virgin previously told Business Insider that it had offered all prize winners new complimentary vouchers for cruises on its other international sailings.

But Morgan said traveling to Europe or the Caribbean is unfeasible, as it could cost her and her partner up to $8,000 — more than the $7,000 value of the voucher.

Experts say Virgin should cover the cost of the flights or offer a different prize

Tenile Clarke , a managing director and principal publicist at Chambers Media Solutions, told BI that Virgin should "definitely offer" to pay the cost of the flights.

Related stories

"Ultimately, this decision boils down to sound reputation management, and the negative publicity that can come from this for Virgin is a significant lesson in the brand's understanding that every customer is a potential ambassador for the product and experience that you offer to any community," Clarke said.

She said this incident is the "antithesis" of Virgin's brand values, which comprise "generosity and lasting social impact."

"While I don't think it will hurt on a macro scale, I do believe that they have to look at their reputation as one of the largest airlines operating in Australia — it's one of their largest source markets," Tenille said.

Balkrushna Potdar, a marketing lecturer at the University of Tasmania, told ABC that this incident may cause customers to lose trust in Virgin's brand.

"The winner's negative experience may become a cautionary tale dissuading potential customers from engaging with the brand," he said, adding that the company should cover the cost of the flights.

Speaking to ABC, Morgan said Virgin's PR team "stopped responding" to her messages after she pointed out how expensive the flights would be.

"We were genuinely shocked, we thought Virgin would provide us with an alternative prize like a flight credit… or they would allow us to rebook on a later season," Morgan said.

"They sort of gave up on us … like 'you're a bit of a problem now,'" she said.

Emma Cruises , a British travel blogger and cruise expert with around 330,000 YouTube subscribers, told BI that it could be unreasonable to expect Virgin to pay for the flights for every person affected by the Australia cancelations.

"The winners shouldn't be expected to pay for flights to claim their cruise, but I also wouldn't expect Virgin to pay for flights for every guest as it wasn't part of the original prize," Emma said.

"I'm sure that the winners would be happy with an alternative like Virgin gift cards to the value of the cruise, which could be used for Virgin Holidays, flights or experience days," she added.

Virgin Voyages declined to comment when contacted by BI for this story.

Terrified passengers have recalled the petrifying moment a Singapore Airlines flight took a “dramatic drop” due to turbulence Tuesday — leaving one man dead and others bloodied and screaming out in pain.

Those on board the Boeing 777 jet said there was virtually no warning before the plane made a “dramatic drop” enroute from London to Singapore Tuesday afternoon.

Injured passengers were carried off a Singapore Airlines flight that was hit by severe turbulence killing one person, injuring 28, and forcing an emergency landing

“Everyone seated and not wearing seatbelt was launched immediately into the ceiling, some people hit their heads on the baggage cabins overhead and dented it, they hit the places where lights and masks are and broke straight through it,” Dzafran Azmir, a 28-year-old student, said.

“The crew and people inside lavatories were hurt the most because we discovered people just on the ground not able to get up,” he continued. “There were a lot of spinal and head injuries.”

Another passenger, Andrew Davies, recalled how those with medical training were desperately trying to render aid — including to the 73-year-old British man who died on board after authorities say he suffered a heart attack.

“My heart goes out to the gentleman who lost his life and his poor wife. Awful experience,” Davies, who lives in the UK, tweeted.

“Shouted for a defribulator [sic]. Passengers with medical training helping as much as they could. CPR on the poor gentleman that passed. Another passenger laid flat in aisle further behind me. Not sure what happened with them. Wish I could have helped more.”

“People’s belongings scattered, coffee and water splattered the ceiling. Surreal. So many injured people. Head lacerations, bleeding ears. A lady was screaming in pain with a bad back. I couldn’t help her,” Davies added.

Everything we know so far about the London-Singapore flight that killed 1, injured 30

  • A 73-year-old British man was killed and more than 30 others were injured after  a Singapore Airlines Boeing flight dealt with severe turbulence Tuesday.
  • Geoff Kitchen, a 73-year-old British grandfather, was traveling on his dream vacation of a six-week tour of Asia and Australia with his wife when he died of a heart attack  after the Singapore Airlines flight plunged more than 6,000 feet.
  • The Boeing 777-300ER jet was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok at 3:45 p.m. local time, the airline said.
  • Passengers have since detailed the terror on board, saying those who weren’t wearing seatbelts were launched into the ceiling when the plane dropped abruptly.
  • Photos circulating online showed food and debris strewn throughout the aircraft in the aftermath of the turbulence, as well as huge dents in the overhead bins.

Photos circulating online showed terrified passengers gripping their seats and a flight attendant bleeding from her nose in the aftermath of the turbulence.

Meanwhile, other images showed food and debris strew throughout the aircraft, as well as huge dents in the overhead bins where passengers had crashed through.

Andrew Davies

Allison Barker, whose son Josh was onboard, recalled receiving a frightening text from him during the flight that read: “I don’t want to scare you, but I’m on a crazy flight. The plane is making an emergency landing… I love you all.”

“It was terrifying,” she told the BBC. “I didn’t know what was going on. We didn’t know whether he’d survived, it was so nerve wracking. It was the longest two hours of my life. It was awful; it was petrifying.”

The plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok in the wake of the ordeal.

Tracking data from FlightRadar24 showed the Boeing jet sharply dropping from an altitude of about 37,000 feet to 31,000 feet within just five minutes as it flew over the Andaman Sea.

The plane, which was carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew, was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok in the wake of the ordeal.

First responders rushed onboard to treat the injured, Thai officials said.

Seven passengers were severely injured and 23 passengers and nine crew members sustained moderate injuries, Kittipong Kittikachorn, general manager of Suvarnabhumi Airport, told a news conference.

Injured passengers were carried off a Singapore Airlines flight that was hit by severe turbulence killing one person, injuring 28, and forcing an emergency landing

“Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” the airline said in a statement. “We deeply apologize for the traumatic experience that our passengers and crew members suffered on this flight.”

The nationalities of the passengers included four Americans, 56 Australians, two Canadians, one German, three Indians, two Indonesians, one from Iceland, four from Ireland, one Israeli, 16 Malaysians, two from Myanmar, 23 from New Zealand, five Filipinos, 41 from Singapore, one South Korean, two Spaniards and 47 from the United Kingdom.

Cruise ships set sail out of Port of Baltimore for the 1st time since bridge collapse

BALTIMORE -- Two cruise ships set sail for the sea from Baltimore this weekend for the first time since the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed.

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Sea left Baltimore on Saturday for a five-night voyage to Bermuda, according to Port of Baltimore Director Jonathan Daniels.

"Cruising is back at the Port of Baltimore," Daniels said in a video posted on X from the Port of Baltimore account.

Carnival Cruise's Pride followed suit on Sunday when the ship headed off for a 14-day voyage to Greenland and Canada.

"Just a week ago, this terminal was being used as an incident command post. In one week, it's been transformed back to starting out that guest experience," Daniels announced in the video, as tropical cruise music played in the background, "The Port of Baltimore is back, cruising is back. It's absolutely great to be able to welcome everybody here."

In a news release posted on the state's website Tuesday, the Port of Baltimore administration had said, "The Port of Baltimore's permanent 700-foot wide, 50-foot-deep channel is expected to be reopened by the end of May."

The Port of Baltimore was temporarily blocked following the March 26 collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The 1.6-mile structure fell after the 213-million-pound cargo ship Dali collided with the bridge and struck one of its crucial support columns.

In 2023, 444,000 passengers departed on cruises from the Port of Baltimore. The Port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in Maryland, according to the state's website. The cruise industry adds $63 million to Maryland's economy, the website notes.
