From the Middle East, the Tour heads straight to the Americas followed by a fantastic five months across Europe touching down in dynamic capital cities, beautiful Riviera destinations and Riesenbeck International will make an exciting debut on the tour before the grand finale in Riyadh. Shanghai, China will not be part of the 2023 calendar but everyone is looking forward to its return to the series in 2024. The race to the season championship will take horses, riders and spectators around the globe to 16 major cities and key locations. Riders will be battling to secure their golden ticket all season for a coveted spot in the ultimate individual showdown, the Longines Global Champions Tour Super Grand Prix at the GC Prague Playoffs. And motivation will be high among team owners, managers and riders to deliver maximum performance to put them in a strong position for the high-pressure knockout stages of the GCL Super Cup at the O2 Arena in Prague for the final event of the calendar. Millions of fans followed the LGCT and GCL season throughout 2022 as sporting excellence reached new levels, with the world’s best riders and horses guaranteed at every event. Fans watched live at the venues or on GCTV live streaming and TV, as well as following all the excitement on social media. The series will aim to expand its audience further during 2023 focusing on digital and broadcast coverage around the world. This year marked an important milestone for Longines as it extended its long-term partnership with the Longines Global Champions Tour to 2027, underscoring the success of this collaboration and the growing popularity of the equestrian sport. As Title Partner and Official Timekeeper, Longines will once again have a strong presence throughout the 2023 season and they will present elegant timepieces to recognise the great performances of every Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix and Longines Global Champions Tour Super Grand Prix winner. In the upcoming weeks, the new GCL team line-ups will be revealed for the 2023 GCL championship as fans across the world get ready for the start of another epic season. All the action, including the GCL R1 & R2 and the LGCT Grand Prix, will be streamed live on GCTV at every event.

Schengen-style GCC tourist visa: ‘GCC Grand Tours’ visa soon to allow visitors to travel in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain and Qatar for over 30 days

Unified visa will make travel more affordable for tourists, UAE Minister of Economy says

GCC 30 day travel visa

Dubai: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) unified Gulf tourist visa – to be named the ‘GCC Grand Tours’ – will allow travellers to visit all six GCC states and spend more than 30 days in the region, UAE Minister of Economy Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri announced Monday on the opening day of the Arabian Travel Market.

He said, “In a significant move aimed at simplifying travel logistics and fostering tourism, the Gulf Cooperation Council has given the green light to a unified tourist visa that will allow travellers to visit all six countries. Through the GCC Grand Tours, that we are working on and aiming to finish, will allow tourists to spend more than 30 days in the region.”

According to the Minister, this will make travel to the region more convenient and affordable for tourists. It will also increase activity and employment numbers in the region, explained the Minister.

  • ATM 2024: flydubai to complete aircraft retrofit project by year-end, flies 5m passengers January to April
  • ATM 2024: Emirates confirms Bahrain, Mumbai as launch destinations for its new Airbus A350 flights

Rollout planned by end-2024

While the Minister did not state an official rollout date for the GCC unified visa, Khalid Jasim Al Midfa of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Authority (SCTDA), who was also speaking at the conference, said the “system should be in place by the end of the year.”

“By the end of this year, the whole system should be in place. Many people and teams, led by the Ministry of Economy in the UAE and other ministries in other countries, are working on it tirelessly to make it happen in the best possible way, emphasizing digital transformation,” said Al Midfa.

“E-services are also vital to this effort because we want to make it easy, avoiding unnecessary complications. Simultaneously, we aim to maintain all the security measures. We share many common security measures (with Saudi Arabia) that will facilitate obtaining a UAE or GCC visa for all GCC countries,” he added. Al Midfa said the region has huge tourism potential and each countries’ tourism boards are working hard to convert it into ‘materialistic economic value’.

"I believe it will be a positive initiative, leading to significant contributions to our regional GDP within the next eight to 10 years," said AlMidfa.

The senior Sharjah government leader said that MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) sector would also contribute tremendously towards visitor growth.

‘Unlike the Schengen visa’

According to AlMidfa, the objectives of GCC-wide tourism are unlike those of the Schengen visa, which were ‘socio-political or socio-economic’. “Here, tourism is driving the initiative. So, we have to structure it differently for people to access GCC countries,” he said.

As business travel entails a higher spend per person than leisure travellers, typically three times more, the packages offered to travellers seeking a GCC-wide travel experience must promote a diverse portfolio. AlMidfa suggested offering multiple leisure and business packages.

Tourism’s contribution to GDP

Al-Marri also said that in 2021, international spending in the GCC will capture 35 per cent of the market. “The travellers' footprint across our lands contributed $109 billion to the total GDP of the GCC economies, highlighting a robust rebound and potential that tourism holds as a cornerstone for economic development,” he said.

He also said that in 2023, the UAE’s tourism sector has surpassed expectations. The Minister cited the World Travel and Tourism Council’s (WTTC) research and stated that travel and tourism contributed 11.7 per cent to the UAE’s GDP last year, amounting to Dh220 billion. “The forecast is set even higher, with an anticipated contribution of 12 per cent to our GDP, equating to Dh236 billion,” he added.

“I believe that our regional ambitions should not be to recover to pre-pandemic benchmarks but exceed them merely,” said Al Marri.

WEEKLY RIDE POSTS

Tour de Guelph

Join us June 25th, 2023 for the annual Tour de Guelph. Come Ride with other Guelph Cycling Club members or your family and friends in any of the multiple routes and rides. Check out our ride posting for this event.

What does it cost to enter?

$50 is the base entry fee. You are welcome to fund raise beyond that for the benefit of the Guelph General Hospital and the Rotary projects of Guelph. If you’ve entered into any events lately, you’ll quickly realize this is a bargain for what you get!

Registration for the event

Guelph Cycling Club has a ‘Registration Team’ for Tour de Guelph. You can join this ‘Team’ when you sign up to attend the event. The TdG registration page is not great. When selecting the ride length you wish to register for, please choose the Registration Type that is titled Fundraise-to-Ride which has “Fundraise $50.00” beside it in the Price Column (this will get you a tax receipt, ‘Free Wheeler’ does not). You can still fundraise/donate beyond $50 if you wish. All of our entry fees and fundraising will be associated with the GCC Team and will show our collective dollar amount raised.

To join the GCC – Tour de Guelph Registration Team click here and enter GCC in the search bar.

What is Tour de Guelph?

Tour de Guelph is a fund raiser for the Guelph General Hospital and local projects through the Rotary Clubs of Guelph South and Guelph Trillium. More info can be found at Tour de Guelph.

What do you get?

You get a great cycling event, pre, post activities and food. You also get the satisfaction of knowing that your money is being used for really great causes!

What is the cycling like?

These routes use the roads of Wellington County and Halton Region. Police will be assisting at many of the major road crossings. There will be family-friendly 5 and 10 km routes through the Village by the Arboretum as well. You can find all the Tour de Guelph routes here .

How do you follow a route?

There are signs throughout the routes and there are paper and electronic maps as well. GCC helped TdG choose ‘Ride With GPS’ for their route hosting so you can now load routes into a bike computer. This is another awesome opportunity to figure out how to load a route into your fancy bike computer and have it tell you when and where your next turns are. Explainer: What to expect at the 42nd GCC summit

The summit is the first since the Al-Ula agreement, which led blockading Gulf countries to restore ties with Qatar.

gcc tour 2023

The 42nd meeting of the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit is expected to consolidate the rapprochement between Qatar and formerly boycotting states, experts have said, deepening ties after the historic Al-Ula agreement in January.

The summit, which takes place on Tuesday in the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh, is the first since Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates agreed to end their dispute with Qatar over a range of issues including its foreign policy, which had led them to sever diplomatic relations with Doha in June 2017.

Saudi arabia’s mbs on first visit to qatar since end of blockade, saudi arabia expects 2022 budget surplus after years of deficit, saudi arabia’s crown prince sets off on tour of gulf-arab states.

The four blockading countries signed the Al-Ula declaration during the 41st GCC summit in January, opening a new chapter based on greater cooperation within the Council.

“A new era of pragmatism is descending upon GCC states,” Dina Esfandiary, a senior adviser at International Crisis Group for Middle East-North Africa, told Al Jazeera.

“There are still varying approaches on how to deal with Iran among the GCC states,” Esfandiary said. “But some of those positions have changed and evolved.”

The summit coincides with talks between Iran and world powers aimed at salvaging the landmark nuclear agreement signed in 2015. The agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), lifted sanctions on Tehran and imposed curbs on its nuclear programme.

Oman, Kuwait and Qatar have maintained ties with Tehran, whose relationships with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE have remained strained, but recent de-escalation efforts have levelled some of the differences vis-à-vis Iran.

Eman Alhussein, the non-resident fellow at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington, told Al Jazeera that disagreements between Gulf countries are likely to continue but “GCC states will benefit from a better security environment, which seems to be one of the objectives behind recent regional activities and is likely to be central to the discussions also in the upcoming Riyadh summit.”

Stability in the region

GCC states are engaged in finding a pathway back to the JCPOA, which former US President Donald Trump abandoned in 2018, in order to lower the risk of a considerable conflict that could embroil the countries in the region.

A seventh round of talks in Vienna has seen Iran’s new negotiating team adopt a hardline bargaining position, insisting that the US lift all sanctions imposed by Trump, including those that dealt with issues such as “terrorism” and were not part of the original agreement.

GCC members are expected to discuss ways of lowering the temperature with Iran, as well as the war in Yemen, Tehran’s links with the Houthi rebels and the role of Iran-linked militias in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.

The UAE this year signalled a U-turn in its approach towards Iran, veering away from confrontation and moving towards diplomacy. Anwar Gargash, a diplomatic adviser to UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan said at the Abu Dhabi Strategic Debate last month that “our interest is to try and avoid [conflict] at all costs.”

Similarly, Saudi Arabia engaged in face-to-face talks with its regional archrival for the first time this year, with officials from the countries meeting four times in Iraq’s capital Baghdad and once on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

According to Esfandiary, “the fact that Saudi Arabia and the UAE are becoming more willing to engage the Iranians will bring them closer to the other countries in the GCC.”

“They’re figuring out that containment on its own doesn’t work, it only works with dialogue,” the ICG analyst added.

The desire to establish a stronger, more cohesive Gulf bloc that can stand up to Iran has contributed to regional de-escalation. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman conducted a whistle-stop tour of the GCC states that culminated on December 8 with the first official trip to Qatar since he was designated crown prince in 2017.

The UAE also sought rapprochement with Qatar, Turkey, and even pushed to build ties with the Iran-allied Assad government in Syria.

Qatar, which was abruptly boycotted for three full years, has aimed to position itself as an interlocutor both between the United States and Iran and between the US and Afghanistan’s Taliban.

Economic ties

In another indication of a geopolitical reset, the Saudi-Qatari Coordination Council was established this year to strengthen bilateral relations and broaden cooperation in achieving the countries’ development goals.

Alhussein, of the Arab Gulf States Institute, said the 42nd GCC summit comes at a time of rapprochement, where “there seems to be a common understanding that will likely deter confrontations similar in scale to the recent Gulf crisis.”

The GCC bloc will likely use the opportunity to discuss longstanding projects including the implementation of the Gulf customs union and common market, economic citizenship and the construction of a Gulf rail network.

Disagreements, however, remain in place over their implementation. “Countries like Oman have said they would not join an economic union and their position has been the same for many years,” the ICC’s Esfandiary said. “I don’t think now is the time in which things like this can be dealt with.”

GCC members are also expected to stress the importance of working together to enhance investment opportunities, despite competition over foreign capital and oil production quotas.

The conservative Saudi kingdom has struggled to attract the foreign investments required to achieve its Vision 2030. Foreign businesses often snub Saudi Arabia for the UAE, which has doubled down on liberalisation policies to attract investments.

In February, Saudi Arabia announced it would stop giving state contracts to companies and commercial institutions that base their Middle East hubs in any other country in the region. Dubai’s former finance chief, Nasser al-Shaikh, said the move contradicted the principles of a unified Gulf market.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE have also had disagreements in July over the latter’s oil production quota within the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). The UAE argued that the baseline for its crude-production quota was too low, a claim rejected by Saudi Arabia.

Combating climate change, securing food and water

Climate change and resource management are soft security issues on which GCC states are expected to find more common ground.

GCC states will likely discuss new agreements to enhance cooperation on international climate policies and renewable energy, the implementation of a circular carbon economy, as well as water and food supply security.

They are expected to address efforts to offload an estimated 1.1 million barrels of crude oil on board the FSO Safer , one of the world’s largest tankers, which has been deteriorating since it was abandoned in 2017 north of the Yemeni city of Al Hudaydah.

The GCC bloc will coordinate on emergency measures as a spill is considered increasingly probable. An oil spill in the Red Sea would spread well beyond Yemen and cause environmental havoc affecting Saudi Arabia, Eritrea and Djibouti.

ATM 2024: UAE reveals details of GCC’s Schengen-styled ‘Grand Tours’ visa

gcc tour 2023

The GCC Grand Tours visa will allow tourists to spend more than 30 days in the region

Marisha Singh

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE Minister of Economy, unveiled plans for the introduction of the ‘GCC Grand Tours’ visa, a unified Gulf tourist visa, during the Arabian Travel Market’s (ATM) opening day.

“In a significant move aimed at simplifying travel logistics and fostering tourism, the Gulf Cooperation Council has given the green light to a unified tourist visa that will allow travellers to visit all six countries,” stated Al Marri.

The GCC Grand Tours visa will allow tourists to spend more than 30 days in the region. According to the minister, this will make travel to the region more convenient and affordable for tourists. It will also increase activity and employment numbers in the region, he added.

Rollout and implementation of visa system

While an official rollout date was not provided, Khalid Jasim Al Midfa of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Authority indicated that the system should be operational by the end of 2024.

“By the end of this year, the whole system should be in place. Many people and teams, led by the Ministry of Economy in the UAE and other ministries in other countries, are working on it tirelessly to make it happen in the best possible way, emphasising digital transformation,” said Al Midfa.

Al Midfa highlighted the collaborative efforts among ministries to ensure a seamless and digitally transformed visa system.

What an incredible day it has been! The first day of #ATMDubai 2024 was absolutely breathtaking, and the exciting part is that it’s only the beginning! Economic impact and tourism growth

Al Marri emphasised the economic significance of tourism. The minister cited the World Travel and Tourism Council’s (WTTC) research and stated that travel and tourism contributed 11.7 per cent to the UAE’s GDP last year, amounting to Dhs220bn.

“The forecast is set even higher, with an anticipated contribution of 12 per cent to our GDP, equating to Dh236bn,” he added.

“I believe that our regional ambitions should not be to recover to pre-pandemic benchmarks but exceed them merely,” said Al Marri.

Benefits and prospects

The ‘GCC Grand Tours’ visa aims to simplify travel logistics, making tourism within the GCC more accessible and cost-effective for visitors. This initiative is expected to boost tourist activity and create employment opportunities across the region.

The introduction of the unified visa system underscores the GCC’s commitment to promoting tourism and economic growth, positioning the region as a leading tourist destination on the global stage.
