grand cayman mangrove kayak tour

Paddle a kayak along beautiful mangrove-lined Camana Bay and spend free time in the waterfront town of the same name. After a briefing to ensure that you maximize the experience, you will ease into a two-seat kayak and follow the guide into the bay. The mangroves are protected because of their environmental benefits. You will notice that the exposed intertwined roots of the mangroves form a protective cage of sorts above the water, which provides an ideal breeding area for fish and other marine life. Mangroves also stabilize the coastline and filter the water, keeping it crystal-clear. It makes for a wonderfully serene setting. Be sure to look for wildlife, especially birds that find shelter in the thick mangroves. Upon arriving in the town of Camana Bay in the heart of Seven Mile Beach, you will be free to explore on your own. The shopping is excellent in this delightful setting with a New Urbanism design.

• Kayak through environmentally protected Camana Bay, which is lined with mangrove forests. • Enjoy the serenity of the setting while looking for wildlife that thrives in the mangroves. • Explore the town of Camana Bay, which features an appealing New Urbanism design.

Kayaking through the Central Mangrove Wetlands

grand cayman mangrove kayak tour

Deep in the mangrove forests you will find blissful shade, interesting wildlife and peace for days. My fiancé and I recently took a kayak tour with Sea Elements through the Central Mangrove Wetlands of Cayman, and it’s an activity I would highly recommend. Our tour guide Mandy was so awesome and made the trip fascinating and fun.

We started the tour by boarding our kayaks from the Cayman Islands Yacht Club. Mandy gave us a 10 minute tutorial on how to maneuver around before we boarded our little vessels. I’d only kayaked once before and felt totally comfortable once on board. We left the bay, paddled past gorgeous waterfront homes and then crossed the open waters of the sound channel to the main mangrove area. As we passed by the mangroves, I saw iguanas poking their heads out of the trees and sunbathing on the limbs. They looked like kings up there.

kayaking through canal

We learned that there are 3 types of mangrove trees in Cayman. The red, black and white mangroves make up one of the most important ecological elements of Grand Cayman providing an irreplaceable habitat for many species, protecting the mainland from storms, helping provide rainfall to the West End and—my favorite—filtering out the residue from murky waters resulting in the crystal clear waters for which Cayman is known. While on the tour, our guide Mandy, told us how to tell the 3 types of mangroves apart which included scratching the leaves and licking them too!

As we were navigating around the perimeter of the mangrove forest, Mandy found little spots at which we could stop and rest while she taught us fun facts. She plucked flora and fauna from the trees and the water for us to handle and see. The first was an upside down jellyfish also known as Cassiopeia. She told us to look for green bean looking things hanging from the red mangrove and explained that those are actually little mangrove plants that would eventually fall and take root. I was impressed to learn that they could live up to a year floating on water before planting their roots. We also handled a poisonous algae that makes up much of the sand on the beaches here. Luckily the algae isn’t poisonous to humans! We laughed when Mandy told us the other “ingredient” that makes up the sand. You’ll have to take the tour to find that one out.

kayaking mangroves

We wandered around the perimeter for awhile until heading into the mangroves through small creek like channels. We paddled those for some time and then took a turn into a very narrow pathway. With paddles now stowed in the kayak we used our hands to grab branches and pull our way through the coolest tree-webbed passageway. I had no idea we’d be going through them like this and was excited as we slowly made our way through. Everyone was quiet as we soaked in our surroundings deep in the mangroves.

Exiting the passageway we saw a blue heron take flight, and would later see two more. I’d never seen them so close! We pulled over again and Mandy showed us mermaid’s cup, a little algae plant with a suction like cup that looks like a wine glass. She stuck it to her nose and then continued to share more.

During one of our “pull-overs” she picked up a squishy little sea creature that didn’t look like much more than larvae. However, we learned that this little creature informally called a sea squirt is the only animal in the world that grows a bacteria that’s used to treat soft cell cancers. With this, Mandy reminded us with sweet class how important it is to protect the small things!

kayaks pulled over at shady mangrove

After about 2 hours we found our way back to the dock where we had started. I left with a new respect for the mangroves and my curious soul satisfied. Mandy was truly a pro and had an admirable passion for the the mangroves. Holding a degree in Marine Biology, she was full of knowledge but we especially loved how she communicated in layman’s terms.

Next time you are in Cayman, definitely make time for a trip to the Central Mangrove Wetlands. I’d suggest bringing sunscreen, an appetite for learning and a sense of humor if you plan to kayak with a partner! You can learn more about the tour we took on  Sea Elements website .

Bioluminescent Kayak Tour

A night adventure begins with a leisure paddle from Rum Point to the Bioluminescent Bay along a sheltered coastline. Be dazzled by a sky full of stars and awed by the bioluminescence below on the darkest nights of the lunar cycle. Our skilled Naturalists will use a laser pointer to guide you through the constellations, planets, and galaxies! Stargazing is a great way to experience nature, explore science, and ponder history.

Cayman Kayaks, established in 2006, is a family-run business and the original tour operator of Bioluminescent Tours in Grand Cayman. We specialize in providing sustainable Bioluminescent Tours by double kayak and Cayman’s only electric boats. Our top notch guides will lead you through the night, teach you about this natural phenomenon, and the importance of exploring in an environment-friendly manner.

Our guide has a blinking light and guests have a solid light for identification on the water. The kayaks are all sit-on-top with a solid and comfortable backrest for your journey to the bay’s calm water. The low draft of the kayaks makes them easy to maneuver. These kayaks are suitable for all skill levels or lack thereof. It is important that you are comfortable with the water and are capable of swimming. We recommend some paddling experience (kayaking, canoeing, or paddleboarding) to participate in the tour. The guide has a tow rope to help you along if you are coming for the first time and need some guidance.

Come prepared to get wet.

Kayaking is a great way to appreciate Cayman’s Bioluminescence Bay quietly and eco-consciously.

Upcoming Tour Dates:

May 24th – June 10th June 22nd – July 10th CLICK HERE for future dates and availability

We schedule our tours around the moon cycle each month, to ensure a quality experience. We only go on the darkest nights of the month! Looking for a future date? Send us an email! [email protected]

What to Wear:

You will get wet while kayaking! Wear attire you feel comfortable to get wet in; swimsuit, t-shirt, and sandals. Leave a towel behind in your vehicle for after the tour.

Is it safe to swim?

You are allowed to swim, but our company discourages swimming to prevent fouling the water and the risk of being stung by jellyfish.

It is a fact that thousands of jellyfish live in the bay year round on the sea bed. These jellyfish have a mild sting, but it may be very uncomfortable when stung depending on the individual and where on their bodies they get stung. There may also be other species of jellyfish with a more potent sting so again, we generally discourage swimming.

However , if you are determined to swim, PLEASE ensure you arrive for the tour free of chemicals/lotions that are not reef safe from your body before the tour. Wearing a long-sleeved rash guard would be a good idea too.

Harmful chemicals/lotions in and on your skin/hair wash off your body and end up trapped in Bio Bay harming the microscopic organisms due to the low water exchange. Since the glowing creatures are trapped in the bay, allowing their glow to increase in number, this also means that if we bring pollution to the bay these pollutants foul the waters and are also trapped. Pollutants trapped in the bay take longer periods of time to be washed out or break down and decompose. Please be respectful to the natural phenomenon.

This ecosystem is fragile!

Project Description

Eco tour grand cayman, an educational tour of grand cayman’s most valued ecosystem.

eco tour Grand Cayman

What are Mangroves?

Mangroves are groups of trees and shrubs that live in saltwater and can only be found growing along tropical coastlines. They have an intricate root system, called prop roots that look a lot like tentacles giving the trees a very exquisite look. These striking roots are often submerged in the water, while the rest of the tree lives above the water line. This structure makes for a very unique habitat for all different kinds of island wildlife.

Why Mangroves matter?

grand cayman mangrove kayak tour

Mangroves provide the foundation for the food chain that feeds all marine life found in the Cayman Islands. They act as an important nursery area for small fish and invertebrates. The roots provide a shelter like sanctuary to protect these fish from hungry predators while also providing a rich source of food – creating an ideal environment for these juveniles to grow and thrive. The waters of Cayman are teeming with vast aquatic wildlife because of the essential functions these mangroves provide.

As you travel around the Cayman Islands you will find yourself surrounded by crystal- clear waters – this is thanks to the unique and complex root system of the mangroves which filter out sediment and other pollutants. This amazing root system also helps prevent shoreline erosion, protects against coastal storms by reducing the impacts of waves and distributes important nutrients for surrounding ecosystems.

Mangrove wood is resistant to rot making it great for creating furniture, building boats, houses and fishing gear for the surrounding coastal communities. Medicinal plants can also be found within the mangrove ecosystems which communities use for their healing properties.

This is the distant cousin of the mangrove family since it normally grows on dry land. White mangrove trees have straight trunks covered Sulphur yellow lichen which makes it appear pale at a distance.

Exploring the Mangroves in Grand Cayman

If you are looking for a new adventure in Grand Cayman and want to learn something new about the island, then this is the activity for you! My mom, sister and I had a personal tour through the mangroves with Danielle. She was so knowledgeable about the island and the flora and fauna of the mangroves. I loved going through the mangroves by just pulling along the branches. We got to see into all the lower branches and see the anemones and a tree crab! My favorite part were the upside down jelly fish and the algae. Activity level was moderate. The most work you needed to do was paddling across the channel. Danielle was a pleasure! We learned so much and loved being out on the water. Book with Sea Elements!

Honestly, I thought this trip would be a little more adventurous but I felt like I was back in school and a field trip. The driver that took us from the cruise ship terminal pointed out scenic and interesting things on the drive there and back but once on the boat . . . yawn. The boat went a very short distance down this waterway into a shallow, narrow inlet in the mangroves. They spent 10+ minutes explaining to some passengers that they said "mangroves and not mango" then it all became about the ecosystem and how resilient these trees are and how boats get harbored into the mangroves with bad weather approaches, etc. I am sure to a botanist or someone into ecology they would find this very entertaining. While some of it was interesting we spent far too long talking about the same thing over and over in a boring lecture sort of way. We did get to see and touch some sea life including a jelly fish that dwells in the mangroves but the highlight of the trip was when we came across a multitude of iguanas basking on the shore along fences.

grand cayman mangrove kayak tour

We kayaked through the mangroves with a guide. We were able to see lots of algae, fish, and marine life, including when a foot long tarpin jumped out of the water and grazed our tour guide's cheek....it was priceless! We were also able to see and touch a jellyfish...without being stung. This was a great way to see the ocean life in Grand Cayman! The cost was incredibly reasonable considering the experience it offered and we highly recommend this tour!

Just got back from cruise on Royal Carribean Navigator of the Seas. We were looking for a tour to take in Grand Cayman and came across one that included this Mangrove Tour. Cruise name of tour--Discover Native Cayman & the Saltwater Forest - GCD7. This part of the tour was one of the highlights of the cruise. Nice to get away from the typical cruise port tours. It was very interesting to look at the wildlife and the crew on the boat were so nice and informative. Highly recommend.

We went to the Sea Elements excursions while on a Disney cruise. The trip was very imformative and educational. The tour guides were very friendly and you could see that they are passionate about what they do.

This snorkeling trip was suggested to us by friends who usually dive. We had no idea what a treat this would be. Words do not do this experience justice. You simply need to do it! We have visited many islands but this snorkeling trip will always be a highlight of Grand Cayman!
