WRC Safari Rally: Everything you need to know

The notorious safari rally kenya, renowned as one of the toughest events in motorsport, marks the halfway point in the 2023 world rally championship this weekend..

Toyota Racing

The rally has prided itself on being one of the WRC’s jewel in the crown events given its difficulty to win. Its unique stages feature a mix of rough gravel and soft sandy roads sprawled across Kenya’s iconic wildlife-filled savannah. amid changeable weather, poses an altogether different challenge for crews.

Last year’s Safari winner and reigning world champion, Kalle Rovanpera heads to Kenya with a 25-point lead at the top of the standings after finishing third at rain-affected Rally Sardinia earlier this month.

His Toyota squad emerged as the team to beat in Africa 12 months ago, after scoring a dominant 1-2-3-4, but the Japanese marque is likely to face stronger opposition this year from the rapidly improving Hyundai and M-Sport-Ford.

Eight-time world champion Sebastien Ogier, who won the 2021 Safari, will factor in Toyota’s line-up alongside Elfyn Evans , who sits fourth in the championship and two-time Safari podium finisher Takamoto Katsuta .

Heavy rain is expected to dominate proceedings in Kenya which could cause problems for the Toyota GR Yaris which struggled to navigate water crossings in Sardinia.

Hyundai heads to Kenya off the back of its first victory of the season following Thierry Neuville ’s triumph in Sardinia, where the Belgian headed a Hyundai 1-2 with Esapekka Lappi in second. This weekend will be Lappi’s first taste of the Safari Rally.

Hyundai faced several reliability concerns last year but if it can replicate its form in Italy, all three i20 Ns, including veteran Dani Sordo should be in contention for victory.

M-Sport-Ford will field three Pumas in Kenya as privateer Jourdan Serderidis rejoins the WRC team for the first time since Rally Mexico in March.

Ott Tanak is set to lead the Ford team’s charge as he looks to reel in Rovanpera in the championship standings after an electrical fault on his Puma cost him valuable points in Sardinia.

Team-mate Pierre-Louis Loubet has starred in rough rallies previously but this weekend marks his Safari debut.

What is Safari Rally Kenya?

The Safari Rally was first held in 1953, as the East African Coronation Safari in Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika as a celebration of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

In 1960 it was renamed the East African Safari Rally and kept that name until 1974, when it became the Kenya Safari Rally.

Held on roads still open to the public, it became notorious as the toughest round of the WRC. Arduous conditions and constantly changing weather and more than 5000 competitive kilometres made simply finishing an achievement.

The event adopted a special stage format in 1996 and from then until 2002, it featured over 1000km of timed tests. The rally left the WRC in 2002 and returned in 2021 with a revised shorter format that remains one of the toughest challenges on the calendar.

Unlike other rounds on the calendar, crews are forbidden to test in the local area to prepare for the event.

Safari Rally Kenya winners

The late Kenyan rally ace Shekhar Mehta and fellow compatriot Carl Tundo are the event’s most successful drivers, having scored five wins apiece.

Mehta scored his first in the Safari Rally’s first event on the WRC calendar in 1973 before taking four more wins from 1979-1982, while countryman Tundo's victories have come from editions held outside of the WRC schedule in 2004, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2018.

During its run as a WRC event from 1973-2002, the 1979 world champion Bjorn Waldegard and four-time world title winner Juha Kankkunen scored four wins.

The Safari Rally was the scene of Colin McRae’s final WRC win in 2002. It was the 1995 world champion’s third Safari Rally triumph, alongside wins for Subaru in 1997 and Ford in 1999 and 2002.

PLUS: Remembering Colin McRae’s last WRC win

World champions Miki Biasion, Tommi Makinen and Richard Burns have all won the rally twice.

Toyota has dominated the rally since it returned to the WRC thanks to victories for Sebastien Ogier and Kalle Rovanpera in 2021 and 2022 respectively. Last year, the marque scored a stunning 1-2-3-4.

M-Sport’s Gregoire Munster will represent the British squad, while the legendary Kenyan Tundo is likely to be in the fight as he prepares to pilot a Skoda Fabia.

A total of 22 Kenyans will tackle their home round of the WRC, including WRC3 regular Hamza Anwar.

How have the Rally1 cars changed for 2023

WRC teams have spent the off-season refining Rally1 machines ahead of a second season under the new hybrid rules.

Reigning champions Toyota have not stood still. The pronounced air boxes that adorned the flanks of the car to cool the hybrid unit have been replaced with a much smoother more aerodynamic design, as it was found the 2022 design overestimated the amount of cooling required for the hybrid unit This has resulted in a re-design of the rear fenders and arches. The rear wing has also been tweaked to compensate for the new aero package.

In addition to the aero changes, Toyota has elected to upgrade its 1.6-litre engine to improve the delivery of power and its torque.

Hyundai has also revealed noticeable changes to its aero on its i20 N. The 2023 car features updated bodywork to the front and rear of the car. The bonnet has been flattened and extended while the front arches have also been modified. The team has also opted for a heavily revised rear wing and wing mirrors.

The new look extended front end has turned the nose of the car into effectively an extra splitter. At the rear, a new rear wing has been designed with last year’s central wing and end plate option transformed into one continuous wing covering the maximum width of the car.

Meanwhile, M-Sport has unveiled a bold new look for its Puma Rally1 with an electric blue and pink livery, replacing its popular purple colours from last season. While the car looks similar to its 2022 model, the team plans to continue its development during the season.

How does the Rally1 hybrid system work?

Drivers will have the use of hybrid power during every stage, with power boosts activated by the throttle pedal, while further boosts will be unlocked through energy regeneration under braking during stages.

Pilots will be required to regenerate 30 kilojoules of energy before another boost is granted that will be used the next time they touch the throttle pedal.

The extra 130 horsepower is delivered through the use of three bespoke homologated engine maps selected by teams, depending on the type of stage and conditions.

Determined by the FIA and event organisers, drivers will be required to navigate parts of road sections and around event service parks in full electric mode.

In full-electric mode, the car has a range of 20km, while its 3.9KWH battery, operating up to 750 volts, can be plugged in and recharged in the service park within 30 minutes. The hybrid unit can withstand an impact of 70G.

The cars are powered by a 100% sustainable fuel.

Testing reduction and other rule changes

The sporting regulations have undergone a refresh with arguably the biggest change being a reduction in testing.

WRC teams will only be permitted 21 test days (seven per driver) instead of the allotted 28 as per last season in bid to reduced costs and improve sustainability. Last year each manufacturer driver would complete a pre-event test day prior to all European rounds.

The move has prompted mixed views among teams and drivers.

Also new for this year, Rally1 drivers will be restricted to using a total of 28 tyres during an event. They will also be no longer handed an extra four tyres for use in shakedown.

In Gravel rallies only, organisers have removed the 15 minutes service normally held before the start of each day.

“By removing the morning service on gravel events and trimming the flexi-service window for P1 cars, we can reduce the working day by up to three hours, which will benefit team members but also the many volunteer officials, including scrutineers and service park marshals,” explained FIA rally director Andrew Wheatley.

Safari Rally Route 2023

Safari Rally Kenya

22 - 25 June 2023

Https://safarirally.co.ke, safari rally stage maps.

The legendary Safari Rally Kenya , the most famous rally in the world, returned to the WRC in 2022 for the first time in 20 years.  The tough rocky roads are back in June for the 2023 edition of the Safari Rally route 2023. Many of the same stages are being used again providing the spectacular scenery the rally is known for

Fourmaux Safari Rally 2022

The Safari Rally Route 2023 is a very different beast from when it was run in 2002.  Run on open roads, each crew was required to have a dedicated helicopter to fly ahead and warn of any obstacles such as wildlife and incredibly other road users.

The Safari Rally was an endurance event with individual stages over 100 km and an overall rally length of over 1000 km. The gaps between the cars by the end of the rally were usually measurable in minutes rather than seconds or even 10ths of seconds as it is now.  The last time the rally was run in the World Rally Championship in 2002 was won by the one and only Colin McRae with Nicky Grist on the notes in the Ford Focus RS WRC 02.

Today the Safari Rally Route 2023 has been updated to fit the modern World Rally Championship format. However, it shares the same character of demanding dirt roads and epic scenery.

The Safari Rally Route 2023 is virtually identical to the 2022 rally, apart from a few fairly minor adjustments to some stages the only real difference is the replacement of the Narasha stage with the Malewa stage. All the stages are located to the North West of Nairobi with the exception of the Kasarani stage in Nairobi itself.

2023 Safari Rally – Rough & dusty ex WRC stages

Rally Action 0 Comments

safari rally stages 2023

In early October we embarked on the thrilling journey to the penultimate round of the WA Rally Championship for 2023—the highly anticipated 2023 Safari Rally. The Safari Rally holds a special place in our hearts, as we have not only participated as competitors but also as officials, establishing an intimate familiarity with its challenges. Our organiser experience spans from 2013 to 2015, adding an extra layer of insight into the roads, the region, and the unpredictable conditions that make the Safari Rally truly unique.

The 2023 Safari Rally unfolded on roads that were once traversed by WRC Rally Australia , situated around the back of the Mundaring Weir. The location, a mere 30 minutes’ drive east of the CBD, offered a scenic yet challenging backdrop. The Rally’s headquarters and service park were strategically based nearby the Chidlow Tavern , setting the stage for an exciting event. The 2023 Safari Rally attracted a competitive field of just under 40 participants. For those vying for the state championship, six stages awaited, with three stages run twice. Meanwhile, the Clubman competitors faced a slightly shorter distance, completing four stages.

Before the  2023 Safari rally even commenced, there were notable talking points, with much discussion centered on the challenging road conditions. The Safari Rally is renowned for its loose, dusty, and often rough terrains, especially without the presence of moisture. The ball-bearing gravel adds an extra layer of slipperiness, and the late afternoon drop in breeze raised concerns about potential hanging dust during stages conducted in the dark.

Beraking – the talk of the town

One major talking point revolved around a specific stage—Beraking. Located a considerable distance, 25+km from the service park, this stage hadn’t been used for several years. It made the conditions unknown until competitors completed their reconnaissance. Reports confirmed that Beraking was particularly rough for the 2023 Safari Rally event.

safari rally stages 2023

Our team entered the 2023 Safari rally with a three-car lineup: Tim and John in their WRX, Glen and Max in the VR4, and Shane and Dermot making their debut in a new WRX. A vehicle for which we haven’t produced a build video. Additionally, Jack and Luke formed a satellite team, competing in their two-wheel drive in Impreza in the Clubman series.

Now, let’s delve into the 2023 Safari rally itself, starting with Stage One— Beraking. The stage started with some smoother, faster sections before competitors encountered the inevitable challenges. Deep ruts and gullies tested the resilience of the cars, subjecting everything under them to a demanding workout.

As predicted, the Safari Rally lived up to its reputation—slippery, loose, and dusty. The conditions on Stage One proved formidable, taking a toll on the entire field. Unluckily, Declan Madigan and Steve Kelly faced a setback in their STI hatch. They experienced a wheel-bearing issue before even beginning the rally in earnest. Dale Faulkner and Rachel Ferrante, in their WRX, had a fortunate escape after going off the road, causing minor damage to their steering.

The challenges continued for Steve Champion and Alex Salter, who, on their first attempt at the 2023 Safari Rally, encountered difficulties. In Stage One they gave their Subaru WRX a fair knock. The drama also extended to Adam Crich and Niamh Nairn, who lost 17 minutes due to an electrical problem with their Evo 3.

Stage Two: More Challenges Unveiled

If Stage One was dramatic, Stage Two brought its own set of challenges. Pete Rullo and Jimmy Marquette faced a tire-related issue with a flat right rear in their Hyundai I20 Rally 2. Craig Rando and Scott Beckwith clipped a drain in their WRX, resulting in the loss of their brakes. Shane Smith and Wayne Richardson, in their WRX, slid off at a corner, causing suspension and panel damage. It cost the pair a loss of about 10 minutes.

The difficulties continued to unfold throughout the 2023 Safari Rally field. Dave Thomas and Mandy Lister aiming for a good run in their WRX, faced disappointment due to a broken driveshaft and a damaged brake line. They had to withdraw after Stage Two. Tony Oates and Riley Griffith also encountered drama, running wide and collecting a rock. The seemingly minor incident bent the left rear suspension in their Honda Civic. Mike Gigney and “Meebs” Amelia Jordan had to retire in their Mitsubishi Lancer due to broken rear suspension.

Hiles and Ward: An Eventful Exit

The most action-packed moment of the early stages unfolded with Tim Hiles and Morgan Ward in their Subaru Legacy RS. A crest broke a driveshaft on landing, and the subsequent corner maneuver didn’t go as planned resulting in a remarkable off-road excursion. The Legacy was battered looking, prompting concerns for their well-being. After assessing the situation, Tim and Morgan decided to withdraw after Stage Two, leaving onlookers in awe at the tumultuous start to the six-stage rally.

Battering the cars!

With only the first service completed and a third of the Safari Rally behind us, discussions within our team shifted quickly to the road conditions. Despite the challenges, things were relatively okay. Tim and John had already dealt with damaged rims, showcasing a notably dented one. The decision was made to change tires after a puncture on one of the last stages, leading to several kilometers driven on a flat, ultimately destroying another wheel and tire in the process.

safari rally stages 2023

Glen and Max, piloting the VR4, commented on the rough roads but expressed their enjoyment of the 2023 Safari rally. Meanwhile, Shane and Dermot, the newbies to the rally scene, were still acclimating themselves to the challenges. Their debut included a minor hiccup of getting lost on liaison, resulting in a time loss of around 10 minutes.

Second Leg: A Mix of Challenges

As the rally progressed into the second leg, several competitors faced issues. Keith Hamilton and David Humphry had to retire their WRX due to mechanical problems. Joe McIlroy and Chris Parish encountered fuel pump problems, causing their WRX to intermittently cut out during stages.

Stage Three, a repeat of the Fierce Beraking stage, offered a respite from the drama-filled earlier stages. However, the calm was disrupted by Craig Rando and Scott Beckwith, who experienced hard landings in both Stage Three and Stage Four. These impacts damaged the gear selector and the extractors, resulting in gear change troubles and a loss of boost.

safari rally stages 2023

With two-thirds of the 2023 Safari rally completed, competitors entered the second service, marking the finish of the Clubman rally. In the Clubman Masters category, Rod Fowler and Keith Mayes secured second place with their Peugeot 206. The Clubman Masters win went to Julian Wright and Jeff Huggins in their Datsun 1200.

The competitive Clubman Cup

In the Clubman series, a compelling battle unfolded between Lachie White/Kai Rassmason in their Daihatsu Charade and Jack Ryan/Luke Dunkley in their Impreza. The tussle reached a climax on Stage Three, where Jack and Luke ran off the road, losing around 10 minutes. Little did they know that their rivals, Lachies and Kai, would encounter trouble on SS4, leading to their retirement. The Hollingsworth team took third place in their Suzuki Swift, while Jack and Luke, despite the time lost in Stage Three, secured a second-place finish. Sam Moody and Dave Christian emerged victorious in the Clubman category, piloting their Impreza.

Dark & Dust

The last two stages of the 2023 Safari Rally unfolded in the dark. As predicted, with the breeze dropping, the dust was hanging. This change in conditions set the stage for a different face of the rally.

Before delving into the State Two-Wheel Drive Championship and the top 10 outright, let’s review the performance of our team. Shane and Dermot impressed with a clean debut, finishing in a solid 23rd place. Glen and Max showcased their skills in the challenging conditions, securing 14th outright. We’ll revisit Tim and John’s journey shortly.

State Two-Wheel Drive Championship: A Seven-Car Field

The State Two-Wheel Drive Championship featured a competitive seven-car field. Recalling the recent 2023 Karri Rally , husband and wife Alex and Lisa White had a significant off in their Nissan Sylvia. Leading the two-wheel drive championship at the time, they needed to enter the 2023 Safari Rally to keep their championship hopes alive.

In a commendable effort to salvage their 2023 campaign, the Whites cobbled together another Sylvia, using parts from two cars. Their determination paid off as they finished third, overcoming challenges such as bent suspension from their earlier off.

The two-wheel drive category witnessed intense competition. Tony Oates and Riley Griffith managed to secure second place despite dealing with bent suspension issues. The battle for the top spot unfolded between Scott Bennett/Gavin Turner, who snatched the lead from Oates and Griffith by a mere 0.5 seconds in Stage Four. Despite the narrow margin, Bennett and Turner managed to hold on, clinching the victory.

Top ten WA Rally Championship

Tim and John secured 10th position, overcoming a troubled day that involved issues with wheels and tires. Their determination persisted, even picking up a puncture on one of the last stages, driving several kilometers on a flat, and destroying another wheel and tire in the process.

Frank O’Shea/Murish O’Connell brought their WRX home in ninth place, demonstrating resilience and perseverance throughout the rally. John O’Dowd/Tony Feaver, typically accustomed to higher finishes, found themselves further back in eighth place in their Skoda Fabia R5.

safari rally stages 2023

Gary Mills and Mitch Gray celebrated reaching the end of the 2023 Safari rally in seventh place, steering their Peugeot AP4 to a respectable finish. Cam Puzey/Ben Madlener showcased a solid performance, sorting out reliability issues in the Legacy RS, securing a sixth-place finish.

Pete Rullo and Jimmy Marquette showcased the endurance of their Hyundai I20 Rally 2, finishing in fifth place. Despite a troubled day, Craig and Scott decided to “send it” on the last stage, which didn’t quite work in their favor, dropping them from third to fourth place.

On the Podium

Alex Rullo and Ben Searcy in their Hyundai I20 Rally 2 secured a commendable third place, highlighting their consistent and reliable performance throughout the 2023 Safari rally.

Daniel “Speedy” Gonzalez and Daymon Nicoli, who had led the rally for a significant portion, faced a twist of fate on the last couple of stages, dropping to second in their Skoda Fabia R5.

First out, First

Drawing car one on the road for the 2023 Safari rally, Dylan King/Lee Tierney had the challenging role of being the road sweeper for the other cars. Despite the initial disadvantage, being car one in the dark proved advantageous, with no hanging dust in front of them. With the experience of winning the Safari in the past, proved their mettle once again, securing another Safari win.

A noteworthy aspect of this year’s 2023 Safari Rally was the second consecutive victory by a production car in a state championship event. The Safari, true to its reputation, delivered surprises, challenges, and excitement, making it a memorable edition in the WA Rally Championship.

safari rally stages 2023

The 2023 Safari Rally showcased the resilience and determination of competitors, the unpredictability of the terrain, and the thrill of rallying under varying conditions. Our team, despite facing its share of setbacks, emerged with commendable performances, reflecting the essence of rallying—a sport that continually tests the limits of both man and machine.

The final round of the 2023 season will see us in Collie in late October for the 2023 Experts Cup Rally.

SEASON 4 UPDATE DETAILS

A new season of content is on the way in the latest update to ea sports™ wrc, along with a sneak peek at vr and esports., ea sports™ wrc, ea sports™ wrc - season 4 update details.

A new Season of content is on the way in the latest update to EA SPORTS™ WRC.

Season 4 of EA SPORTS™ WRC content is just around the corner, including new Rally Pass items, Moments and more. Read the patch notes here and check out the info below for further detail, along with a teaser of what we’re working on next.

EA SPORTS™ WRC in VR - Coming to PC, end of April

One of the best ways to experience a rally car is to be in the driver’s seat, truly connected to the car and the forces you exert on it at full speed through a stage.

It is a sensation that very few get to experience in the real-world, but one that EA SPORTS™ WRC players will get closer to than ever before with the release of VR on PC.

The development team at Codemasters has progressed far enough with the VR implementation that we can show you a little teaser, and also confirm that we are targeting the end of April as a release window.

Check out the Season 4 Reveal Trailer once more for some in-development footage of VR in action.

Built using OpenXR technology, VR in EA SPORTS™ WRC adds a new dimension and level of immersion to your rally experience; we will share more details and a final release date once the work is completed, tested and a release is scheduled.

When VR is released in EA SPORTS™ WRC, it will come as a free update to all PC players.

Season 4 Rally Pass 1 - Starts April 9

The latest Rally Pass will begin from April 9, featuring a new set of customisation items for your driver and cars. Get a sneak peek at these new items with our Reveal Trailer, both embedded above and linked here .

Players can unlock a range of customisation items by earning XP throughout the game, with 20 levels of rewards in total. Drivers can unlock up to 10 free items, as well as an extra five with EA Play, and an additional 15 with the VIP Rally Pass for a total of 30 items across the entire season.

If you’ve yet to complete Rally Pass Season 3 and unlock all of its rewards, you have until the morning of April 9 to do so, before the game switches over to Season 4 and all players are reset to Level 1.

Season 4 Moments 2 - From April 9

Also going live from April 9 is a new Season of Moments, celebrating the history of WRC with daily challenges in-game.

With the real-world 2024 season underway, Moments inspired by this year’s rallies will be available in-game 3 around 1-2 weeks after each event. Keep an eye out for Moments based on 2024’s Croatia Rally and Rally Italia Sardegna during Season 4.

To get a taste of what’s to come, Season 3 Moments based on February’s dramatic Rally Sweden and March’s Safari Rally Kenya are live in-game now, and all Season 3 Moments will move into the Archive tab once Season 4 goes live, where they can be re-played at any time.

As for Season 4 Moments, here’s a small sample of what you can look forward to:

Touring the Safari (Kenya)

Take this classic Porsche 911 SC RS to victory at Rally Safari Kenya. The perfect combination.

Take the Win (Monte Carlo)

WRC2 kicked off the season at the iconic Rallye Monte-Carlo, with Yohan Rossel taking the first event win of the season by only 4 seconds.

Battle of Attrition (Greece)

Due to the brutal nature of this abrasive and twisting rally in 1983, by SS9 this Renault driver was the last man standing in his class. This was until a mechanical failure occurred and ultimately forced him to retire too.

Neuville in Finland

With Rovanperä crashing out on SS8 at the 2023 Secto Rally Finland, Thierry Neuville went on to win 3 stages and claim another podium finish, keeping his title hopes alive.

A Rare Gem (Japan)

Survive this challenging and narrow stage in the BMW M3 Evo Rally with rear axle damage.

Version 1.7.0 Update - Out April 4

On April 4 the latest update to EA SPORTS™ WRC will go live, containing several fixes and improvements across the game.

This update primarily focuses on the Season 4 content & Moments ahead of its release on April 9, along with performance improvements and fixes across several locations.

You can read through the full patch notes here , and we’ve highlighted the key fixes below:

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

safari rally stages 2023

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

Croatia Rally: Preview TOYOTA GAZOO Racing back on asphalt for Croatian challenge

2024.4.12 (Fri)

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team will aim to conquer the challenging asphalt roads of the Croatia Rally once more at round four of the 2024 FIA World Rally Championship on April 18-21.

2024 GR YARIS Rally1 HYBRID

Since Croatia first joined the WRC schedule three years ago, TGR-WRT has tasted victory with three different drivers in as many editions. Two of those drivers return as part of its line-up for this year’s event, with the 2021 winner Sébastien Ogier to make his second start of the season alongside 2023 victor Elfyn Evans and Takamoto Katsuta, who has a trio of top-six finishes under his belt in Croatia.

After achieving a record-extending victory on Safari Rally Kenya, TGR-WRT leads the manufacturers’ championship by four points while Evans leads its challenge in the drivers’ championship, just six points from the leader.

The rally continues to be based in the Croatian capital Zagreb – although the service park this year moves to a new location at the Westgate shopping mall to the north-west of the city centre. The stages take place across the north of the country, close to neighbouring Slovenia, on roads that feature a wide variety of different asphalt types. This means that grip levels are constantly changing, which can be further complicated by rain and mud. Some sections are technical and twisting, while many others are fast and flowing with jumps and crests.

After a shakedown and ceremonial start on Thursday, the rally begins on Friday with its longest day. Four stages take the rally south-west from Zagreb towards the coastal city of Rijeka, which hosts a lunchtime regroup. After a tyre-fitting zone, the same four stages will be tackled in reverse order in the afternoon on the way back to Zagreb.

Saturday runs to a more typical format, with a loop of four stages to the west and south of Zagreb to be run twice either side of mid-day service. As usual, Sunday’s finale takes place to the north of Zagreb where a pair of stages will be run twice, with Zagorska Sela – Kumrovec once more hosting the rally-ending Power Stage.

Four GR Yaris Rally2 cars are entered in Croatia, with Sami Pajari (Printsport) and Georg Linnamäe (RedGrey Team) joined by the TGR WRC Challenge Program duo of Yuki Yamamoto and Hikaru Kogure, who are registered to compete for WRC2 points.

Quotes: Jari-Matti Latvala (Team Principal) “Our win in Kenya came after a lot of hard work from the whole team, so that result has been really good for the team spirit and gives us even more motivation for the events to come in what is always a very important period for the championship. We have done well in Croatia in the past and we generally have a good feeling to go back there. If it’s dry then the roads there can be very enjoyable to drive, but we know that the weather can also play a big part and make it very difficult. We know that the GR YARIS Rally1 HYBRID has been strong on asphalt but we are aware that the competition is making steps forward all the time. In this event a driver can make a difference if they are confident with the changing grip levels, and that comes from having confidence in the car. So our aim is to provide our drivers with this confidence and hopefully come away with the most points at the end of the weekend.”

Kalle Rovanperä / Jonne Halttunen

Kalle Rovanperä (Driver car 69) “”

Elfyn Evans / Scott Martin

Elfyn Evans (Driver car 33) “The start of our season has been solid and we’ve come away from each round with some decent points. We’ve had three quite unique events with very specific challenges and now we come to some more typical European asphalt and gravel rallies, we need to focus on trying to maximise these. Last year was good for us on asphalt, including Croatia, so it’s a rally we look forward to. We know this is a pretty tricky rally with the changeable grip levels and it's very easy to make a mistake. So we need to try and have a clean rally but, at the same time, we know that we’ll need to drive quickly to be fighting at the front.”

Sébastien Ogier / Vincent Landais

Sébastien Ogier (Driver car 17) “I’ve enjoyed my time off since Monte-Carlo and now I’m happy to get back into competition. My test last week was a good chance to get my feeling back in the car, with quite a demanding road: pretty fast with jumps and narrow sections. These are features of the rally as well, but we also know that the weather can be uncertain at this time of year. We don’t have the ideal starting position for an asphalt rally, so we’ll have to assess the conditions and see what we can do. My main motivation is always to reach the podium and fight for victory, but I’m also here to help the team, and with the new points system we can see that Sundays are also now more important than ever.”

Takamoto Katsuta / Aaron Johnston

Takamoto Katsuta (Driver car 18) “I’m feeling more and more confident on asphalt after my performance on Rally Japan last year, and some stages of Monte-Carlo this year. However, Croatia is one of the trickiest rallies because of the amount of cutting and the number of surface changes. Being able to fully commit when the road is dirty is an area where I can still improve in my asphalt driving, and I want to take this event as an opportunity to continue making progress. It will not be an easy rally, especially with our starting position on Friday and even more so if it rains. So it could be important to have some patience in the beginning and then try to find the rhythm and a good balance to be able to push hard.”
