Jean Pierre is meticulous in planning out his tours, he takes into account what you want to see, which Châteaux you want to visit , etc. He really loves what he does and it shows in his tours. Experience start to finish; - emailed request and received a response very quickly - Jean Pierre asked a few questions about the group, size, our wine knowledge (we are novice wine drinkers), requests on Châteaux we wanted to visit ... then he got working on the itinerary and making appointments for the Châteaux visits. - Jean Pierre confirms pickup location and itinerary (picked us up from our Airbnb!) - follow up communications confirming pickup points etc (he is very clear in all communication) .. we were a group of 4 and it ended up being just us that day! I believe his car fits up to six people. - then a day touring and enjoying wine: our day started at Château du Tailhas Pomerol, then scenic drive around Pomerol and St. Emilion, lunch/ explore St. Emilion, Château Dominique and then Château Canon La Gaffeliere. (Jean Pierre made sure to give us different types of chateaux to visit, from small family owned to larger more industrialized ones) We learned so much from Jean Pierre, from now knowing that different regions in Bordeaux produce different blends of wine to how the terroir affects the taste of the wines. I'm already looking at my calendar for 2017 to see when I can get back to Bordeaux and do another tour.. perhaps multiple day tours with Jean Pierre!

Enter Mary Dardenne, whose Decanter Tours holds the key to tastings at elusive wineries like Châteaux Latour and Lafite Rothschild . Here, she takes us inside Bordeaux’s best.

How do you decipher the different crus?

There are huge contrasts in Bordeaux. Most visitors don’t realize that only five percent of the thousands of properties in the region are classified as premium châteaux. The rest are attainable, affordable, and accessible. Visitors often remark that they are surprised at the diversity in Bordeaux—not only of the soils and grape varieties, but also of the wine styles, types of people, and châteaux.

What’s the best strategy for experiencing that large diversity?

We try to plan a mix of bling châteaux—like Pavie or Mouton [Rothschild]—and family-owned châteaux. We also suggest visits [that] are exceptional and surprising, like Lamothe Bergeron, a château that most people may not have heard of but that offers a unique tour.

How do we get into the grand crus?

We have access to all the most famous wineries, but I would caution a word of advice: Plan at least six months in advance. Most of the top properties are not in the tourism business and generally only offer one or two visits per day.

Which winery is a must-see right now?

Château Sigalas Rabaud, the smallest first classified growth in Sauternes. It has a new terrace where you can enjoy an aperitif with views over the vines, and you’ll likely be welcomed personally by a member of the family—perhaps even the Count of Sigalas himself. What are the best châteaux for a meal? In the Medoc, I like to have lunch at Château Pichon Longueville Baron; it’s very exclusive and just what one expects of a château experience. We also offer a picnic on Saturdays at Château La Croizille in Saint-Émilion for a more informal experience. The château is located on a hillside with plunging views, and we have a picnic table amongst the vines.

Château Lafite Rothschild:

Château Lafite’s circular cellar room was constructed under the supervision of the architect Ricardo Bofill and inaugurated in 1987. Intended for the ageing of wines in their second year, it is characterized by its unusual octagonal shape and an arch supported by 16 columns. It can accommodate up to 2,200 barrels.

Origins and the Ségur family While the first known reference to Lafite dates to 1234 with a certain Gombaud de Lafite, abbot of the Vertheuil Monastery north of Pauillac, Lafite’s mention as a medieval fief dates to the 14th century.

The name Lafite comes from the Gascon language term “la hite”, which means “hillock”.

THE “NEW FRENCH CLARETS” From the early 18th century, Lafite found its market in London. Between 1732-1733, Robert Walpole, the Prime Minister, purchased a barrel of Lafite every three months. It was only much later that France began to take an interest in Bordeaux’s red wines.

From 1716, Marquis Nicolas Alexandre de Ségur consolidated Lafite’s initial success. He improved the wine making techniques and above all enhanced the prestige of fine wines in foreign markets and the Versailles court. He became known as “The Wine Prince”, and Lafite’s wine became “The King’s Wine”. Everyone sought to procure Lafite’s wines. Madame de Pompadour had it served with her supper receptions, and later, Madame du Barry made a point of drinking “only the King’s Wine”.

THOMAS JEFFERSON On the eve of the French revolution, Lafite was at the height of its wine making legacy, as witnessed in the exceptional writings of Thomas Jefferson, future President of the United States.

THE 1855 CLASSIFICATION In 1815, Mr. Lawton published an initial classification of Médoc wines in his brokerage house log. It was apparently an accurate assessment, as it was very similar to the 1855 classification. Lafite was already at the top of the list: “I ranked Lafite as the most elegant and delicate, with the finest fruit of the three (leading wines).” He added that “its wines are the most superb in all of Médoc.”

The successful vintages are :

1834, 1841, and especially 1846. In 1855 Lafite rated as “Leader among fine wines”. This ranking would be the benchmark for a new and astonishing era of success for Médoc vineyards. The period’s finest vintages include 1847, 1848, 1858, 1864, 1869, 1870 and 1876.

WORLD WAR II :

After World War II a series of excellent vintages in 1945, 1947, and 1949 gave strength to the reconstruction effort. In the cellar, a stainless steel vat complex was installed alongside oak vats, and a new circular ageing cellar was constructed Very fine vintages for the 80s and 90s decades, were notably 1982, 1986, the trilogy 1988, 1989 and 1990, and then 1995 and 1996, these were greeted with soaring prices.

An exceptional terroir :

The vineyard consists of three main areas: the hill sides around the Château, the adjacent Carruades plateau to the west, and 4.5 hectares in neighbouring Saint Estèphe. The vineyard covers 112 hectares and is well-drained and well-exposed, with soil made up of fine deep gravel, mixed with aeolian sand on a subsoil of tertiary limestone. It is well-drained and well-exposed to the sun. The grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (2%).

The average age of the grapevines is 39 years old. But it should be noted that vines younger than 10 years old are not used in the Grand Vin. This means that the average age of the vines used in the Grand Vin (Château Lafite Rothschild) is closer to 45 years. The oldest plot, called “La Gravière , was planted in 1886.

The property has been managed since 1962 by a single team that, due to the proximity of the two properties, oversees both Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Duhart-Milon. Eric Kohler.

REMARKABLE DECADE AROUND THE YEAR 2000 :

There was a remarkable series of vintages, helped by rather dry weather during the growth season. Among them, 2000, 2003 (the heat wave year), 2005, 2009 and 2010 will reveal their splendour with age! The turn of the century went smoothly with some very promising vintages ageing in the cellars. This cautious optimism is based on the ongoing search for excellence that is so much a part of Château Lafite Rothschild’s history.

The grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (2%).

The grapes from each plot are fermented in separate vats in order to preserve the identity of the terroir on which the grapes have ripened. At Lafite, tradition and technical progress go hand in hand, fermentation takes place in two vat rooms: one with traditional large oak vats, and the other with modern stainless steel vats, with integrated cooling / heating rings and automated centralized temperature control.

Upon completion of alcoholic fermentation, the cuvée-wines are tasted before being drawn off to the fine wine vats. The free run juice and the pomace are separated and the pomace is pressed independently in order to extract the “press wine”. A second fermentation phase, called malolactic fermentation, takes place in vats before the wine is transferred into barrels by batches.

In 2010, Lafite further refined its vinification procedures with the construction of two vat rooms consisting of several dozen smaller-sized vats. A Merlot vat room (with concrete tanks ranging from 50 to 125 hl) in order to make wine with an extra level of care from all the various plots of Merlot. A divisional vat room (with stainless steel vats ranging from 30 to 70 hl) dedicated to malolactic fermentation (secondary fermentation) in order to continue plot selection all the way through the vinification process for any batches of Cabernet or Merlot that require it.

All of the barrels come from the Domaines cooperage, with a special “toasting” during manufacturing suited to the characteristics of the wine. Several tastings from each vat are carried out to make the selection for the Grand Vin. Blending takes place after the first racking of the barrels in March. Then the ageing phase of the wine begins in the cellar, which takes between 18 and 20 months. During this period, the cellar master racks the wines regularly in order to clarify them. Four to six lightly beaten egg whites are added to each barrel, which absorb floating particles and pull them down to the bottom of the barrel. The wine is then ready for bottling, which takes place in June.

Our family has been making wine in Bordeaux since 1868. Over six generations we have learned about this beautiful landscape and the unique characteristics of the vines in each appellation.

In 1999, we wanted to create a new range of wines, each of which would embody the appellation from which it came. Bordeaux is a unique and welcoming place, full of different characters. This is the spirit of Les Lègendes R: To ensure that wine lovers from all over the world can immerse themselves in Bordeaux and taste the originality of each appellation. Our CSR commitments also apply to Les Légendes R . The challenges of sustainable viticulture, resource conservation, responsible sourcing, meeting consumer expectations and human solidarity are integrated at every stage, from wine selection to tasting.

For over 150 years, our master winemakers have been making the best wines in Bordeaux. This is illustrated by the positive observations made in the field as we meet with our partners: the wine industry is making progress in terms of both quality and environmental management. Close partnerships with our wine growers allow us to select the best grapes. From there, the job is to find the best balance between the traditional winemaking process and the technical know-how to make wines that best reflect the personality of the terroirs from which they come. Among our commitments: fair compensation in support of maintaining local roots. To reduce our associated carbon footprint, our packaging is evolving with lighter bottles and more environmentally friendly materials.

There is no better way to explore the region than on two wheels. So, it would be a shame to rush. The Tour de France often speeds through it, the cyclists being more concerned with winning than with wine. But rumour has it that when some riders know they are behind and that defeat is inevitable, they sometimes “get lost” along the way. Of course, their only option is to meet at a local vineyard and rest their weary limbs in the sun with a glass of Bordeaux. For us, this does not look like a defeat at all.

Our Bordeaux Rouge is mainly made from Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are sourced from the best terroirs of the Entre-deux-Mers. As is traditional in Bordeaux, this wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. What makes Les Légendes R Bordeaux Rouge so unique is that our winemakers use a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, DBR Lafite’s signature grape. It contributes to the elegant structure of our Bordeaux, while the Merlot gives it roundness. This wine is partially aged in oak barrels, which gives it the desired level of complexity and its characteristic finesse.

“ The bravest man the world has ever seen is the one who was the first to eat a raw oyster, ” says an old saying. Jacques is not so daring. But once a year, he accompanies his friend André on a bike ride to Arcachon. There they take the boat to Cap Ferret to visit the legendary oyster huts on the beach. What’s on the menu? Only oysters. It’s not ideal for Jacques, but André gobbles them up by the dozen. So why does Jacques go? André knows that his friend needs no more persuasion than a chilled bottle of Bordeaux Blanc to seduce him. As a bribe, this one is not so bad.

To obtain our fresh and aromatic Bordeaux Blancs, we harvest the grapes before sunrise to preserve their delicate aromas. The result is a wine that offers an explosion of flavours the moment you open it.

In addition to Sauvignon Blanc, which makes up the majority of the blend, it includes an unusual percentage of Sémillon. This is a tradition at DBR Lafite, as we have been producing great Sémillons in Sauternes for decades. The Sémillon gives the wine its volume and an incredible mouthfeel, while increasing its cellaring potential.

This blend combines tropical fruit notes such as pineapple and passion fruit with delicate mineral notes. Aged on lees, it has a nice roundness balanced by a fresh and crisp finish.

The Gironde estuary was once home to families who lived on the islands along the river.

But it took more than a body of water to get between the Biellet family and their favourite wine. Every Saturday, they rowed across the estuary to the market in Macau to stock up on supplies and, above all, to buy a few cases of their Médoc of choice. They were always a little ambitious about how much wine the boat could carry. Leaving a precious cargo behind? Never, even if it meant that their youngest son had to swim back home. Bravo, Philippe!

The Médoc is a flagship name when it comes to Bordeaux, always synonymous with structure and complexity. Les Légendes R Médoc perfectly reflects what Cabernet Sauvignon has to offer with its intensity and silky-smooth texture, so unique for a young wine.

This Médoc is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, the king of grapes, with the same care as our Grands Crus. The grapes are carefully sorted and then lightly crushed before undergoing a slow fermentation, with regular pumping over to allow gentle extraction of tannins and phenolic compounds. Some of the wine is aged for 8 months in French oak barrels, which contributes to its finesse and complexity.

This wine is well-balanced and complex, with aromas of black fruits mixed with vanilla and nutmeg. The subtle smoky notes are perfectly integrated and lead to a long spicy finish. Decanting is recommended, to allow it to fully express itself.

The village of Saint Émilion is famous for its preserved architecture and its legendary wines. Saint Émilion is a unique appellation in the Bordeaux region, where an abundance of small vineyards forms the mosaic of the landscape. But what happens under the vines is just as special.

Beneath the vineyards lies a labyrinth of quarries and tunnels, linking lots, and cellars throughout the region. This underground network is not only useful for getting around, it is also considered the ideal place for winegrowers to hide their secret treasures. And with a wine as special as Saint Émilion, it’s no wonder they want to keep a private collection.

Our Saint Émilion is a confidential vintage, composed mainly of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It has a complex but supple tannic structure, balanced by the fruity roundness of the plum and black cherry aromas.

The DBR Lafite teams have been producing exceptional Merlots on the Right Bank for nearly thirty years, so it was natural for Les Légendes R to offer a Saint Émilion.

The selection of a great Saint Émilion for our range required several years of intensive work by our winemakers to find a wine that would truly respect our style while being faithful to its terroir.

It is a silky, harmonious wine with a distinguished bouquet of red fruit and toast. Les Légendes R Saint Émilion is aged for 12 months in oak barrels, some of which are new. Suave on the palate, with silky tannins, it is a wine of great persistence.

The secret of Pauillac wines lies in its terroirs. The landscape is almost white, all because of the light-coloured pebbles that cover the gravelly ground. It is these layers of terroir that are the secret of lively and exceptional wines.

Les Légendes R Pauillac wines come in part from our family vineyards, Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Duhart-Milon. These wines are aged in barrels made in our own nearby cooperage, which contribute to the style and give the wine its incomparable elegance.

MEET CHARLES

CHARLES is an author, journalist, consultant, and former Head of Wine for Christie’s Auction House in both Asia and the Americas, with a wealth of experience in the wine and spirit trade. He joined Christie’s in 2008 from Moet Hennessy USA, where he was Director of Wine & Spirit Education.

In 2012 he set up his fine wine consultancy WineAlpha to provide advice on the buying, selling, storing, and shipping of fine wine, wine appraisals, and advice on varied topics of interest to wine collectors.

Curtis trained as a chef at the Cordon Bleu in Paris. He apprenticed at Michelin-starred restaurants, but moved to the wine trade in 1994, and passed the Master of Wine exam in 2004.

His first book, The Original Grand Crus of Burgundy , was released in 2014, and the second, Vintage Champagne 1899-2019 in 2020. He is a board member of the Institute of Masters of Wine, North America, and regular contributor to Decanter magazine and other publications.

Charles is unquestionably one of the most knowledgeable and accomplished wine experts in North America with a warm, friendly style and a love for sharing his passion for fine wine and great food.

MINI CONSTANT MW

MINI  joined the wine tasting team at university, whilst studying Politics & Economics, and thereafter a hobby became a career. She started in London at the wine department of Harrods, followed by becoming a sommelière in a fashionable restaurant in the City of London. She continued her career with the Symington port family, who have been in Oporto for over 130 years and own the prestigious houses of Warre’s, Dow’s, and Graham’s amongst others.

In 1987 Mini moved to France with her husband and became an agent sourcing wines from South-West France for the UK trade. Since 2003 she has been running her own business, Tastevin du Monde, which has a number of different facets. It includes teaching WSET courses, mainly for young wine professionals, in France, in Bordeaux, and in China, in Shanghai.  Mini also blends wines for various vineyards in South-West France and when replanting helps them choose which grape varieties to use to increase complexity, to cope with climate change, and to lessen the use of chemicals in the vineyard. The final, very enjoyable facet is accompanying groups in France and Spain on luxurious, fun wine tours.

MEET PHILIP

PHILIP   i s a true wine professional, Vintners Scholar and former Chairman of the Institute of Masters of Wine. His wine business interests covering four decades have taken him around the globe, resulting in a unique blend of knowledge and experience which he loves to share.

His tasting skills are put to good use as The Chair of Judges at the International Wine and Spirit Competition, and through his international consultancy work which has brought him many awards and personal honours. Philip served as wine adviser to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother for over a decade.

He is a communicator with a truly approachable and engaging style, which has been much in evidence at the BBC Good Food Show, on TV and on a number of the top cruise lines.

He currently holds the position as a senior lecturer at the International Wine and Spirit School in London and for Fine Vintage in Calgary and Florence. www.philipgoodband.com

ROD SMITH MW

Your host in the Rhone Valley

ROD, is currently Vice-Chair of the Institute of Masters of Wine (MW), and is one of only 416 people to hold the MW, the highest qualification in the field which he passed in 2006. He is a wine educator, marketer, and journalist, based in the South of France. With a client list that includes the world’s wealthiest, most discerning and demanding customers, Rod is the owner/director of the Riviera Wine Academy,

Prior to this, Rod worked for Vins Sans Frontières – the leading wine supplier to the superyacht industry in the South of France, and before that in the UK for a variety of fine wine importers and retailers, as well as being an established WSET educator. Rod has been extensively involved in judging wine competitions in London (Panel Chair, Decanter World Wine Awards, IWC), Shanghai (SIWC, Wine100), Guangzhou (Golden Bottle Awards), Dallas (TexSom), Sofia (Balkans International Wine Challenge), Moscow (Russian Wine Fair), and Sydney (Sydney Royal Wine Show).

Rod has travelled and presented about wine widely including many trips to China and the Far East.

Rod’s personal interests include cycling, running, travel, literature, card magic and film.

CATHY VAN ZYL, MW

Your host in South Africa

CATHY   started her wine journey on a bicycle: she asked her husband to ride SA’s famed Cape Town Cycle Tour with her; he accepted if she attended a wine course with him. She has since notched up more than 21 tours – and passed the prestigious Master of Wine examination in 2005.

Previously chair of the Institute of Masters of Wine’s education committee, she is now a member of its Council. Cathy judges locally and internationally.

She occasionally contributes to wine journals and websites around the world but spends most of her wine-time as associate editor of Platter’s South African Wine Guide.

In 2019, she was named as the Cape Wine Masters’ Personality of the Year for her passionate promotion of South African wine at every conceivable opportunity.

GEOFFREY MOSS, MW

MEET GEOFFREY

Geoffrey Moss earned his Master of Wine in Fall 2020, an achievement that tops his exploration of many facets of the wine industry. He was awarded the Villa Maria Award for his outstanding knowledge and understanding of viticulture and the Robert Mondavi Winery Award for the best performance across all the theory papers in the MW exam. His resumé includes working with Don Triggs and family at Culmina Family Estate Winery and then as part of the team at the ambitious Phantom Creek Estates project, seeing the brand and winery emerge from start to completion. Geoffrey founded Lithica Wine Marketing in 2019, a boutique agency that helps wineries develop effective, customer-centric business and marketing strategies. He runs the wine consulting business from Penticton in the heart of the Okanagan Valley. An avid writer, Geoffrey is also a wine reviewer/critic and contributor at Gismondi on Wine and has also been published on Jamie Goode’s Wine Anorak, Jancis Robinson’s Purple Pages, and Palate Press.

Behold the Bordeaux conundrum. 

The market feels supremely conflicted. The 2023 wines released via the En Primeur campaign—which represent a tiny percentage of the region’s overall production—are generally good to great in quality, and the prices range from “down” to “way down.” Yet, there are wines that should be excellent that are merely good.  It’s a vintage—yet again—where research is required.

Claims that these wines are investment-worthy can feel like a stretch, given that, depending on the wine, older vintages are available for similar or lower prices. Plus, you can put your hands on those older wines today rather than waiting two years to receive these “releases” that are, in fact, still sitting in barrels. Moreover, yields for the 2023 vintage were generous, moderating the urgency to buy even some of the rarest allocations, whatever the price. Still, it is possible that En Primeur prices this low will never be seen again, as this level of price cutting is exceedingly unusual. Bordeaux isn’t known for charitable pricing during the En Primeur season.

En Primeurs [note: like the French, The New Wine Review will use the plural form when appropriate] is over 60 years old and has been fraying for over a decade. Some feel it is now unraveling, while others think it’s getting a refresh. After many conversations about what is happening in the marketplace, it may be both—unraveling, despite trying to refresh. Too little, too late, by many accounts. 

Some Bordeaux insiders chatted with me about the latest on what’s happening with the system in general, and their thoughts on the brand-new releases from the Left Bank.

MacArthur Beverages, General Manager (Washington, D.C.)

Yeah, we’re not selling much En Primeurs this year. Léoville Barton is the perfect example. They release their whole production during En Primeurs, so it’s harder to buy it if you don’t buy it now. People jump on it right away, and we usually sell a lot of it. This week, we sold seven bottles in the first 24 hours. 

When we put up La Mission Haut-Brion on the web, it was crickets for the first hour. I just don’t feel the energy or vibe. No one is clicking to see the hot, new release. Before, as soon as we put it up on the web, people were buying.

There are a lot of reasons. First, people bought a lot of ‘18s, ‘19s, ‘20s, ‘21s, and even ‘22s. Today they can go out and buy those older vintages at similar prices [to their original purchase prices] and take more home today. Second, with 2023, people know it’s a good vintage, but they read between the lines and see that it isn’t a great vintage. I think it was very well agreed upon that 2022 was a very good vintage. 2023 is an okay vintage but with good wines, yet there’s no consistency. So there’s not a lot of buzz. 

2021 was not a great campaign, but it has been better than this one. The economic climate was better. Plus, wine sales overall aren’t good either. Business started getting slow around the fourth quarter of last year. Nobody really knows why. Generally, business follows the stock market, and the stock market has been good. So, you can blow up that theory. Is it the cost of money [high interest rates]? Some say it’s election uncertainty. Some say people are going back to pre-pandemic habits. It’s not as trendy to drink alcohol. There is also inflation, or more accurately the perception of inflation—that plays a part.

I give the Bordelais credit because they have given the wines the prices that the market asked for. They listened to the feedback from the négoces and the merchants. It is frustrating that it is not moving the needle. 

You can look at it as a long play. They’re good wines from a good vintage. Traditionally, Lafite does go up in price. So does Cheval Blanc. I don’t mind owning those because they will eventually be good to own. But it is frustrating that we’re not seeing the reaction that the trade wanted.

The next level of well-established châteaux—Gruaud-Larose is doing good stuff. Lagrange makes a lot of wine, but at a good price. They deserve some kudos. Giscours made one of the best wines they’ve made in a long time. 

Then there are the less well-known properties worth owning. Fieuzal came out at a nice price. They’re doing great work. La Tour Figeac is a sleeper pick in Saint-Émilion. Château Mangot in Saint-Émilion is doing good stuff. In a vintage like 2019, the value plays like Fieuzal and Laroque sell out. Nice prices and great scores mean they are usually great sellers. But I’ll have to see if we buy them this year. 

Generally, Bordeaux has been a strong category in the last four to five years, especially with older vintages. It’s great that there are so many vintages at good prices in the market. It’s the négoces that really get the rough end of things [with the slow 2023 En Primeurs].

I support Sauternes, even if customers are leery about buying them En Primeurs, because prices don’t go up. I’ll look at Coutet, Suduiraut, and maybe a few others. 

I think Château Margaux is the wine of the vintage.

The last En Primeurs I bought was 2020. 2021 was a weak vintage. I didn’t buy 2022 because of the high prices, and Bordeaux still had plenty of ‘18, ‘19, and ‘20. It made more sense to buy older vintages instead of paying for the futures then getting the wines two years later. That’s the thing about En Primeurs and Bordeaux. They are full of inventory. 

The cost of money—last year, it was one of the reasons we decided not to buy. We’re not a big purchaser, so we have to pay half in September and half in January—and you have to pay for the wines whether you’ve sold them all or not. This year, we are being more careful. I’m buying some First Growths and sending emails to clients, but I’m only buying six bottles at a time.

This year, it’s a good but not outstanding vintage. But prices are down. So, I am buying some wines. I don’t expect to buy huge quantities. I’m buying a lot of Left Bank. I think Pauillac did well. It seems Saint-Julien did well. I’m buying where I think I can give my clients a good vintage at a good price. We use Sauternes a lot for classes, so we are buying those for classes—2023 was a great year for botrytis. 

In Florida, people are still discovering En Primeurs and trying to understand it. Unless the person is really a Bordeaux collector, they don’t know about it. 

The other problem is that, as wine drinkers age, they don’t want to buy more Bordeaux. We need to convince 40- and 50-year-olds. But the returns are different for that generation. Lots of people say that the 1982s they bought and resold paid for their kids’s college educations. Now, there is minimal gain, even this year when we’re seeing Mouton offered at $442 and Lafite at $500 retail. We’re selling other vintages of Lafite at $1,000. Now you buy these wines simply for a more affordable price so that you can enjoy them yourself.

Other things are changing, too. One is that châteaux are becoming brands. Everyone knows the First Growths, but no one knows that Lynch-Bages is a Fifth Growth. Then, there are the second and third wines. In 2020—a great vintage, I bought second and third wines. I found them really difficult to sell. When people buy En Primeurs now, they only want the big names. If the second wine costs $40 and they have to wait two years, they’d rather spend $50 for something they can get their hands on now. 

In this vintage, don’t miss Sauternes, especially Rieussec, Doisy Daëne, and Suduiraut. In Margaux, look at Giscours and Kirwan. And—again—in Pauillac, they are all generally very good wines.

Last year we dipped a toe in the water with châteaux and négociants—we’d never offered En Primeur wines before. Our impression is that the En Primeur buyers are more serious buyers because they aren’t receiving the wines for over a year for the whites and for two-plus years for the reds. 

The timing was good in that prices have moderated this year, even if the quality has not been as consistent [as 2022]. The gods did not give all things to all people. Even next-door neighbors didn’t get consistent weather.

En Primeurs used to be a way for people to get in to get their favorites. Now, they’re investing. It seems to make a difference when we can say something has the highest score from a critic, or that there is a new winemaker, or maybe that there is a new winery. 

Scores and critics’ responses matter a ton. We’ve had tremendous success among the wines that got consistently high barrel scores and tasting notes. Wineries that have a high score, regardless of their overall brand perception, have good historical sales.

The gods did not give all things to all people. Even next-door neighbors didn’t get consistent weather.

We’re being very selective. We’ve offered Haut-Brion, Pontet-Canet, Aile d’Argent [the white from Château Mouton Rothschild], Malartic-Lagravière, Pape Clément, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Angélus, Château Guiraud [Sauternes]—these wines with high barrel scores are crushing it. Plus, these are wines with great brand value. 

Where critics have loaded on praise, we’ve had tremendous success. If scores and praise are very positive, but not the most positive—there is less success. A 96 or a 97 isn’t bad, but our buyers think of scores as an investment. The ratio of score to price really moves the needle. [Only one wine available on Wine Access’s website is in the relatively “low” range of 95-96.]

Last year, there was a disproportionate performance of Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion. They were a surprise, getting a very high score—99s or 100s. But, they kept their moderate price—it was something like $159 En Primeur—and didn’t do the money grab. Its success indicated to us that there is this sort of deal-seeking where customers are interested in a quick, easy exercise: how many dollars does it cost per point? This year, someone might look at buying one bottle of Angélus [$355] or three bottles of Pontet-Canet [$91]—Angélus doesn’t have as high a score as Pontet-Canet.

Two things move the needle right now: market context and properties correcting overly aggressive price rises. Sometimes properties have adjusted prices down by 40 percent. Some folks have chosen merely to hold pricing. The latter is not resonating. A good example is Pontet-Canet. I sincerely doubt that I’ll see that wine under $100 again because of the scores they are getting. With these pricing corrections, this could be a once in a lifetime—or a very rare—opportunity for people to own wines like Lafite or Pontet-Canet.

President, Cognac One (New York, NY)

I’m generally excited about 2023. It checks all boxes. It is a vintage that will be good in five years but that also has amazing aging potential for 20 years. The quality is there as well. 

This last week with the Left Bank, we had the chef d’orchestra [Lafite Rothschild] release followed by Léoville Las Cases and Pontet-Canet. It is so exciting to show more affordable prices. That is, maybe, what Bordeaux needed. 

Bordeaux always has a global view in terms of strategy. There are always new trends, and now affordability matters more than before. 

The best estates probably didn’t need to lower their prices. By doing so, they showed a certain willingness to keep Bordeaux in front of all consumers—as one of the main sources of fine wine. They have the right objective for the whole region. Still, Angélus is not following the prices. It is down “only” 25 percent. Last year they were up 32 percent.

These adjustments do not reflect on stocks of other vintages. Sure, there is no shortage of wine to sell, but that’s because Bordeaux makes a good amount of wine. Besides, these are all beautiful vintages that have been aging and aging well. 

Bordeaux is very adaptable. Bordeaux realized that they had to counter their reputation to revitalize, to be attractive to younger consumers. Younger wine drinkers are often well traveled and eager to explore. Bordeaux is trying to entice them.

In this vintage, Haut-Bailly is simply splendid. Everything they do is gorgeous. At the same time, they are innovative. They are ticking all the boxes. Also in Pessac-Léognan, Smith Haut Lafitte is vitally pretty. I love Sauternes, too. These are beautiful wines in 2023. They shouldn’t be reserved only for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Ces vins qu'il faut absolument acheter en primeur

Les prix des grands crus de Bordeaux marquent une baisse sensible. C'est le moment de refaire sa cave à moindre coût. Nos bons plans.

« Bordeaux est dans une situation terrible, il faut en prendre conscience , nous glisse, alarmé, ce directeur d'une propriété de premier plan de l'appellation Pessac-Léognan. Le vignoble est touché par un véritable tsunami et la campagne des primeurs est la plus difficile depuis des années. Les prix sont en chute libre. Ce printemps, beaucoup de châteaux ne vendent que 20 % des vins qu'ils ont produits ». Cette situation, que connaissent des milliers de domaines du Bordelais depuis longtemps - notamment dans l'Entre-deux-mers et dans certaines appellations peu médiatisées de la rive droite -, touche maintenant les grandes propriétés, les marques les plus prestigieuses. Plusieurs raisons à cette crise.

Une crise à plusieurs facteurs

Le coût de revient d'une bouteille a largement augmenté. L'évolution du prix du verre, de l'électricité a aussi touché le mondovino. Par ailleurs, l'augmentation des taux d'intérêt pénalise le négoce. Et depuis des mois, le marché chinois, plusieurs longtemps considéré comme un eldorado par de nombreuses propriétés qui y expédiaient une part conséquente de leur production, est à l'arrêt. À l'ouest, les États-Unis traînent eux aussi des pieds pour acheter la dernière récolte.

Investissement fort rentable

La baisse des prix abîme les marques. Difficile pour les acheteurs réguliers d'accepter que le millésime 2023 soit mis en vente à la moitié du prix du 2022. Alors que les notes des critiques restent bonnes dans l'ensemble. Pour les amateurs de vins de Bordeaux, c'est sans doute le moment d'acheter en primeur. Une manière de donner un coup de pouce aux propriétés, à un moment crucial. Et une opportunité pour refaire sa cave à moindre coût. Sans oublier que l'achat de vins en primeur peut constituer un investissement fort rentable avec des prix souvent en hausse lors de la revente. À moins de 35 € la bouteille, nous avons repéré trois cuvées. En Haut-Médoc , Château La Tour Carnet en rouge (noté 91-94/100 par Le Figaro Vin) - à - 8 % par rapport à 2022 - est proposé à 28,80 € sur chateauprimeur (le site sur lequel nous avons relevé l'ensemble des prix de cet article). Château Grand-Puy Ducasse (noté 93-95/100 par Le Figaro Vin), en appellation Pauillac , affiche une baisse de 21 % par rapport au millésime précédent. Il est vendu 32,75 €. Château Prieuré-Lichine 2023 , à Margaux  (noté 91-94/100 par Le Figaro Vin), a perdu 20 %. Il est vendu 33,60 €.

Pour les budgets intermédiaires, évoquons, à Pauillac , Lynch-Bages 2023 (noté 94-96/100 par Le Figaro Vin) qui a baissé ses prix de 31 % pour un atterrissage à 100,80 €. Mais aussi, à Saint-Julien , Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2023 (noté 96-99/100 par Le Figaro Vin) vendu 35 % de moins que le millésime précédent. On peut l'acheter au prix de 172,80 €. Les investisseurs pourront miser sur le Château Haut-Brion 2023 (noté 95-98/100 par Le Figaro Vin), en Pessac-Léognan rouge, qui présente une baisse de prix de 40 % par rapport au millésime précédent. Il en coûte aujourd'hui 438 €. Enfin, à Pauillac , Lafite Rothschild 2023 (noté 96-98/100 par Le Figaro Vin) affiche une baisse de 68 %. Il faut débourser 570 €.
