A pop-up appeared while on safari with a toll free number. It said, "Warning! Apple Security Breach! IOS Security Crash!" Then it tells me to contact this toll free number 1-844-749-1071 for assistance immediately. Is this a scam?

Safari wasn't acting properly after this pop-up with a toll free number came up saying something about a security breach and how I should call the toll free number immediately. I haven't had this happen to me before, so I wanted some insight on if this is a possible scam and what can I do to make safari accessible again?

Actually one idea, try a phone reset.

Reset iOS 6 Settings. To reset the settings on your device go to Settings >> General then scroll down and tap the Reset button at the bottom. On the Reset screen tap Reset All Settings – Not Erase All Content and Settings – then you'll need to verify you want to do it twice.

The easiest way to resolve this is to close Safari by double tapping the home button. Go to settings -> Safari -> Clear History and Website Data. This will then return Safari to it's original settings and resolve the issue. Hope this helps.

I just had a flashing warning sign that said security breach call 866-339-7833. I called the number and it sounded like a busy call center in the background. A man with a thick accent took my call. I asked what is the name of the company he works for. He told me he was in technical support for Apple. I asked him "how do I know that this is really apple. The man got very combative and asked me "how do I know who you are and just went off on me. I tried to cancel the call but the warning sign kept flashing and wouldn't let me end the call, so I turned off my iphone. I then immediately contacted apple. If the guy was really from Apple, I think he would have known who I am by asking me security questions. It has to be a scam. I'm hoping that by calling the number provided, I haven't set myself up for a virus. Any input on this thought?

PATCH GAP —

No, it doesn’t just crash safari. apple has yet to fix exploitable flaw, webkit bug that was fixed upstream has yet to find its way into apple products..

Dan Goodin - May 26, 2021 8:04 pm UTC

No, it doesn’t just crash Safari. Apple has yet to fix exploitable flaw

Apple has yet to patch a security bug found in iPhones and Macs despite the availability of a fix released almost three weeks ago, a researcher said.

The vulnerability resides in WebKit, the browser engine that powers Safari and all browsers that run on iOS. When the vulnerability was fixed almost three weeks ago by open source developers outside of Apple, the fix's release notes said that the bug caused Safari to crash. A researcher from security firm Theori said the flaw is exploitable, and despite the availability of a fix, the bug is still present in iOS and macOS.

Mind the gap

“This bug yet again demonstrates that patch-gapping is a significant danger with open source development,” Theori researcher Tim Becker wrote in a post published Tuesday . “Ideally, the window of time between a public patch and a stable release is as small as possible. In this case, a newly released version of iOS remains vulnerable weeks after the patch was public.”

"Patch-gapping" is the term used to describe the exploitation of a vulnerability during the usually brief window between the time it’s fixed upstream and when it becomes available to end-users. In an interview, Becker said that the patch has yet to make its way into macOS as well.

The vulnerability stems from what security researchers call a type confusion bug in the WebKit implementation of AudioWorklet , an interface that allows developers to control, manipulate, render, and output audio and decrease latency. Exploiting the vulnerability gives an attacker the basic building blocks to remotely execute malicious code on affected devices.

To make the exploitation work in real-world scenarios, however, an attacker would still need to bypass Pointer Authentication Codes , or PAC, an exploit mitigation system that requires a cryptographic signature before code in memory can be executed. Without the signature or a bypass, it would be impossible for malicious code written by the WebKit exploit to actually run.

“The exploit builds arbitrary read/write primitives which could be used as part of a larger exploit chain,” Becker said, referring to proof-of-concept attack code his company has released. “It does not bypass PAC. We consider PAC bypasses to be separate security issues and thus should be disclosed separately.”

Theori said  that company researchers independently discovered the vulnerability but that it had been fixed upstream before they could report it to Apple.

“We didn't expect Safari to still be vulnerable weeks after the patch was public, but here we are... ” Becker wrote on Twitter.

This exploit was a fun challenge. We didn't expect Safari to still be vulnerable weeks after the patch was public, but here we are... https://t.co/jkEH7w498Q — Tim Becker (@tjbecker_) May 26, 2021

Eight Apple zero-days and counting

Further reading.

According to a spreadsheet maintained by Google’s Project Zero vulnerability research team, seven vulnerabilities have been actively exploited against Apple users since the beginning of the year. The figure rises to eight if you include a macOS zero-day that Apple patched on Monday. Six of the eight vulnerabilities resided in WebKit.

Apple representatives didn’t respond to an email seeking comment for this post.

Apple just patched a pair of dangerous iOS and macOS security issues, so update now

Two zero-days were found exploited in the wild

Apple logo on the side of a building

Apple has fixed two zero-day flaws that were being actively exploited against users with iPhones, Macs, and iPad devices.

The flaws could have allowed threat actors to take over victim's devices, giving them full access to the endpoints , experts said.

"Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited," the Cupertino giant said in an advisory published with the fixes.

Long list of affected devices

The two flaws are being tracked as CVE-2023-28206 and CVE-2023-28205. The former is an IOSurface out-of-bounds write vulnerability that allowed threat actors to corrupt data, crash apps, and devices, and remotely execute code. Worst case scenario - a threat actor could push a malicious app allowing them to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges on the target endpoint.

The latter is a WebKit use after free vulnerability with similar consequences - data corruption and arbitrary code execution. For this flaw, the worst-case scenario is to trick victims into visiting a malicious website, resulting in remote code execution.

The flaws were addressed in the release of iOS 16.4.1, iPadOS 16.4.1, macOS Ventura 13.3.1, and Safari 16.4.1, so if you’re worried about these vulnerabilities, make sure to bring your systems to the latest version as soon as possible.

Apple released a list of vulnerable devices, including the iPhone 8 and newer, all iPad Pros, iPad Air 3d generation and newer, iPad 5th generation and newer,iPad mini 5th generation and newer, and all macOS Ventura devices.

Apple did say it was aware of threat actors abusing the zero-days in the wild, but did not discuss the details. However, BleepingComputer speculates that the attackers might be state-sponsored, given the fact that the flaws were discovered by researchers usually hunting for government-sponsored players.

The researchers that found the flaws are Clément Lecigne of Google 's Threat Analysis Group and Donncha Ó Cearbhaill of Amnesty International's Security Lab. The flaws were being used as part of an exploit chain, it was said.

How to Solve Safari Crashes on the iPhone

A handful of tweaks may keep Safari from crashing on your iPhone

ios security crash safari

  • Ithaca College
  • Switching from Android

What to Know

  • Restart the iPhone. Check Settings > General to see if an update is available. If it is, install it.
  • Other tips to try include: Clear the Safari history and website data, disable AutoFill, disable iCloud Safari syncing. Turn off JavaScript.
  • If everything fails to help, contact Apple.

This article describes several ways you can solve Safari crashes on the iPhone. These troubleshooting steps work with all currently supported models of the iPhone. Version-specific instructions are noted where applicable.

Restart the iPhone

If Safari is crashing regularly, your first step should be to restart the iPhone . Just like a computer, the iPhone needs to be restarted every now and then to reset memory, clear temporary files, and generally restore things to a cleaner state. To restart the iPhone:

After the iPhone restarts, visit the website that crashed Safari. Chances are, things will be better.

Update to the Latest Version of iOS

If a restart doesn’t fix the problem, verify that you're running the latest version of iOS, the iPhone's operating system. Each update to iOS adds new features and fixes all kind of bugs that could be causing crashes. There are two options for updating iOS:

  • Update using iTunes .
  • Update wirelessly directly on the iPhone.

If there is an update available, install it and see if that fixes the problem.

Clear Safari History and Website Data

If neither of those steps work, try clearing out the browsing data stored on your iPhone, including your browsing history and cookies placed on your iPhone by sites you visit. A "flush" also clears this data from all devices signed into your iCloud account. Losing this data may be a mild inconvenience if the cookies provide functionality on some websites, but it's better than having Safari crash. To clear this data, Tap Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data .

In the menu that pops up from the bottom of the screen, tap Clear History and Data .

Disable AutoFill

If Safari is still crashing, disabling autofill is another option you should explore. Autofill takes the  contact information from your address book and adds it to website forms so that you don't have to type your shipping or email address over and over. To disable autofill, tap Settings > Safari > Autofill.

Move the Use Contact Info slider to off/white to disable your address and phone from populating forms. Move the Names and Passwords slider to off/white to stop username/password pairs from automatic entry. Move the Credit Cards slider to off/white to keep your payment history off.

Disable iCloud Safari Syncing

If none of the steps so far have fixed your crashing problem, the problem may not be with your iPhone itself. It may be iCloud . One iCloud feature syncs your Safari bookmarks between all Apple devices signed into the same iCloud account. That's useful, but it can also be the source of some Safari crashes on iPhone. To turn off iCloud Safari Syncing, tap Settings > [your name] > iCloud and move the Safari slider to off/white.

Turn Off JavaScript

If Safari is still crashing, the problem could be the website you're visiting. Many sites use a programming language called JavaScript to provide all kinds of features and animations. JavaScript is great, but when it's written badly, it can crash browsers. Try turning off JavaScript by visiting Settings > Safari > Advanced and moving the JavaScript slider to off/white.

Isolating the problem isn't the end here. You really need JavaScript to use modern websites, so I recommend turning it back on and not visiting the site that crashed (or disabling JavaScript before you visit it again).

Contact Apple

If everything nothing has worked and Safari is still crashing on your iPhone, your last option is to contact Apple to get technical support. Learn how to get tech support in this article.

New Safari Exploit Raises Concerns About iOS Security

By Sophia Taylor

Published: October 31, 2023

Researchers have discovered a new cybersecurity threat named iLeakage , targeting Apple devices with A- and M-series processors. This threat, which affects devices running iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, leverages a vulnerability in these CPUs to siphon sensitive data from the Safari web browser.

By manipulating Safari to load a specific webpage, attackers can utilize speculative execution—a CPU performance optimization feature—to extract information like Gmail inbox contents and auto-filled passwords.

iLeakage is notably the first attack of its kind aimed at Apple Silicon CPUs and affects all third-party iOS and iPadOS web browsers due to Apple’s policy requiring the use of Safari’s WebKit engine. Apple was informed about this issue on September 12, 2022, with all devices released from 2020 onwards being susceptible.

The exploit works by embedding malicious JavaScript or WebAssembly in a webpage. When a user navigates to this page, the attacker can covertly access data from other sites the victim is browsing, using side-channel techniques that exploit variables like timing and power consumption.

This method builds upon speculative execution, where CPUs execute instructions out of order to improve performance. Although speculative execution is designed to enhance efficiency, it can leave traces in the cache when predictions about program paths are incorrect, creating opportunities for data leakage.

iLeakage circumvents Apple’s security measures by employing a unique, timer-less approach that relies on race conditions to differentiate between cache hits and misses. This allows for unauthorized reads within Safari’s rendering process, posing a significant privacy risk. Despite the technical complexity of executing such an attack, it highlights ongoing concerns with hardware vulnerabilities.

Apple Warns Users in 92 Countries About Mercenary Spyware Attacks

Apple on Wednesday sent threat notifications to users in 92 countries warning that they may have been targeted by mercenary spyware attacks, likely because of who they are or what they do.

apple security banner

"Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID -xxx-," the company wrote in the warning to affected customers. "We are unable to provide more information about what caused us to send you this notification, as that may help mercenary spyware attackers adapt their behavior to evade detection in the future." "This attack is likely targeting you specifically because of who you are or what you do. Although it's never possible to achieve absolute certainty when detecting such attacks, Apple has high confidence in this warning — please take it seriously," added the warning.

In an updated support document , Apple said it has sent similar threat notifications to users in over 150 countries since 2021. "The extreme cost, sophistication, and worldwide nature of mercenary spyware attacks makes them some of the most advanced digital threats in existence today," said the company. "As a result, Apple does not attribute the attacks or resulting threat notifications to any specific attackers or geographical regions."

Last October, Apple sent similar warnings to some journalists and politicians in India. Soon after, nonprofit advocacy group Amnesty International reported that it had found Israeli cyber-arms company NSO Group's invasive spyware Pegasus on the iPhones of prominent journalists in India. Users in India are among those who received the latest threat notifications, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke to TechCrunch .

The alerts come at a time when many nations are preparing for democratic elections. Apple previously described the attackers as "state-sponsored" in the support document, but has replaced those references with "mercenary spyware attacks." The warning to customers reads: "Mercenary spyware attacks, such as those using Pegasus from the NSO Group, are exceptionally rare and vastly more sophisticated than regular cybercriminal activity or consumer malware."

Apple advises those who have received a threat notification to seek expert help, such as the rapid-response emergency security assistance provided by the Digital Security Helpline at the nonprofit Access Now. Apple threat notification recipients can contact the Digital Security Helpline 24 hours a day, seven days a week through their website .

Users who have not received an Apple threat notification but have good reason to believe they may be individually targeted by mercenary spyware attacks are advised to enable Lockdown Mode on their devices for additional protection.

Apple released iOS 17.4.1  on March 21, more than two weeks after the company released iOS 17.4 . The iOS 17.4 release brought fresh features to your iPhone , like new Stolen Device Protection options and transcripts in Podcasts . The iOS 17.4.1 update patches two zero-day vulnerabilities on your iPhone. A zero-day vulnerability is a security flaw that can be used to access vulnerable systems in software or hardware, according to  IBM .

To download the update, go to Settings > General > Software Update , tap Update Now and follow the onscreen prompts.

"This update provides important bug fixes and security updates and is recommended for all users," Apple wrote in the update's description.

iOS 17.4.1 update information which reads this update provides important bug fixes and security updates and is recommended for all users.

Apple wrote in the update's  CVE entry -- which stands for common vulnerabilities and exposures -- that iOS 17.4.1 addresses two issues that could lead to arbitrary code execution. According to the  IT services company Okta , arbitrary code execution could allow a third party to steal your data or hack your device for other nefarious purposes. Apple didn't say these issues were actively exploited, but these issues could be exploited without this update.

According to Apple, both issues were uncovered by  Google's Project Zero , a team of security analysts who research and report zero-day vulnerabilities in hardware and software.

How to get rid of 'iOS crash warnings' scam popups

adrian-kingsley-hughes

Have you seen a popup on your iPhone or iPad claiming that iOS has crashed and that you need to phone a helpline for a fix? It's a scam, and here's how you can fix it yourself in under a minute.

There are a number of variations on the popup. Here are two examples:

"Warning!! iOS Crash Report!!. Due to a third party application in your device, iOS is crashed. Contact Support for Immediate Fix." "There is a problem with the configuration of your iOS. Please call Apple Technical Support."

These popups, which cannot be dismissed, appear to only be targeting the Safari browser users. The scam first appeared in November of 2014 but appears to have become more widespread in recent weeks.

Google finally launches its Find My Device network. Here are the Android models that support it

  • 5 Linux commands you must know to keep your device running smoothly
  • Apple is finally adding an iOS home screen feature that Android has had for 15 years
  • I changed this Android setting to instantly double my phone speed
  • The best AirTag for your wallet is flat, rechargeable, and isn't made by Apple

In all cases there's a phone number - "conveniently" for the victim, it's a toll-free number for their geographic location - and on the other end of the line is someone asking for money to make the popup go away. Needless to say, the person on the other end of the line doesn't have any legitimate connection with Apple, isn't going to make the pop-up go away, and is only interested in your financial details.

Fortunately, the fix for this is easy.

  • Put your iPhone or iPad into Airplane Mode (go into Settings and toggle the Airplane Mode switch into the off position).
  • Go to Settings > Safari and tap Clear History and Website Data .
  • Close Safari (double-press the Home button and swipe Safari up to close).
  • Exit Airplane Mode.
  • Restart Safari.

To reduce the risk of this sort of issue from happening in the future you can block popups (go to Settings > Safari and toggle the Block Pop-ups switch).

Update your iPhone, iPad and Mac! New patch fixes nasty Safari issue

You’d like to think your browser prioritizes privacy. Unfortunately, sometimes our search providers let us down. Tap or click here to take a free, fast test that reveals how much private data our browser is leaking .

Last week, security researchers discovered that Apple’s Safari browser could leak your data to websites you visit. It all comes down to an implementation bug in IndexedDB, designed to hold user data.

Put simply, the bug lets websites see databases they shouldn’t. It also lets them search those databases for information like your browsing history, personal data and even your Google avatar. Luckily, Apple released a new update that fixes this privacy-endangering bug.

Patch the bug ASAP

Don’t wait to update. There’s a lot of personal information at risk. Not only is this bug an invasion of your privacy, but it also lets hackers see your browsing activity in real-time .

If you want to go into the weeds and get a technical understanding of how this works, check out this short video from FingerprintJS , the folks who blew the whistle on Jan. 14.

Fun fact: Someone reported the issue to the WebKit Bug Tracker on Nov. 28, 2021. Apple didn’t take action until Jan. 16 — after FingerprintJS shone a spotlight on the issue. (How curious.)

You can even run a quick test to see the problem in action

Head to  Safari Leaks and see if the site can grab your Google User ID. You can even check out one of its test websites in a new tab. Return to the site and you’ll see that browsing history. It can be creepy to see the surveillance in real-time.

RELATED : Is someone spying on your cellphone?

Typically, this shouldn’t be possible. When Safari is working correctly, Safari Leaks would have no way to find this information. That’s because sites are only supposed to access data from their databases. (Or to be super technical, databases its domain created.)

How to fix the bug

To protect yourself, update your Apple devices. Apple released a few updates:

  • iPhone: iOS 15.3
  • iPad: iPadOS 15.3
  • Mac: macOS 12.2
  • Apple Watch: watchOS 8.4

Install the latest OS onto whichever Apple device you’re using. To do this, follow these steps:

How to update iPhone, iPad or iPad touch

  • Open  Settings .
  • Tap  General .
  • Select  Software Update .
  • Tap  Install Now .

Instead of  Install Now,  you might see  Download and Install . If so, select that option to download the update. Then, enter your passcode and select  Install Now .

How to update macOS

  • Click on the  Apple menu  in the corner of your screen.
  • Select  System Preferences .
  • Click  Software Update .
  • Select  Update Now .

New iOS 18 Safari browsing assistant feature tipped as Apple's iPhone AI plans come into focus

W ith Apple set to announce the iPhone's iOS 18 software update at WWDC 2024 on June 10, we continue to hear various tidbits about what the software might have to offer when it's finally previewed to the world. Apple has been characteristically tight-lipped about the whole thing, but a new report suggests that changes are coming to the way people browse the internet on their iPhones.

According to some newly-discovered backend code, Apple appears to be working on a new Safari browsing assistant feature, although at this point it's difficult to know what that will actually do or how it will benefit iPhone owners everywhere. However, that doesn't mean that we can't make some calculated guesses.

Those guesses are informed by the ongoing narrative that we can expect a boom in Apple AI features with the release of iOS 18, something that is also tipped for the Mac with macOS 15 . If Apple really will, as is heavily rumored, lean on AI for a number of impressive new features this WWDC, it's possible that the Safari browsing assistant feature will do much the same. And that could be very interesting indeed.

AI browsing

The code was first spotted by Nicolás Álvarez and shared on the X social network. According to the post, references were found to Safari browsing assistant and something called Encrypted Visual Search. Both features are thought to make use of Apple's iCloud Private Relay infrastructure to send data to Apple which suggests that there will be some sort of privacy or security angle to them. If that's the case, users may require an iCloud Plus subscription to use them.

Safari browsing assistant could well be a byproduct of Apple's focus on generative AI which could in turn mean that users will be able to have their iPhone go off and find information for them based on internet searches. Siri can already do that to some extent and with wildly varying degrees of success. But ChatGPT 4 can already do this to a much more impressive extent, as can similar chatbot tools from others.

As for the Encrypted Visual Search reference, it's possible that could be an expansion of the Visual Look Up feature that allows people to identify things within photos and videos, but we will need to wait and see how that one pans out.

If Apple follows the release cadence we're all familiar with, the new software announcements will happen on June 10 with developers immediately given an early beta to test. However, the public will have to wait until the fall to install them on their personal devices. A launch in mid-September seems most likely, probably shortly before the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro officially go on sale.

WWDC will see more than just iOS 18 and macOS 15 previewed, with the iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and more all receiving big updates. The Apple Vision Pro will also likely be updated to visionOS 2 later this year and that software is also expected to be previewed at WWDC before following a similar months-long beta program.

This looks beautiful!! Great work.

The only improvement I could think of, is to use less external libraries and use the default XP assets instead.

URSS652 1 year(s) ago

Good afternoon! Thanks for the feedback!

I tried very hard to use as few third-party libraries as possible, but unfortunately there are still not enough objects in XP12 that are really needed for the airfield, such as the ILS system

Initial release of this file just launched. Welcome aboard!
