  • DETAILS DETAILS

London's McFly rose to fame in the 2000s, emerging in the wake of similar British pop act Busted's success and winning over fans with their boyish charm and lively, pop-punk anthems. However, while Busted shared commonalities with the punk-edged accessibility of acts like blink-182 and Simple Plan, McFly owed a bit more musically to bands like the Beach Boys. They topped the U.K. Albums chart with their 2004 debut, Room on the Third Floor, spawning hits like "Five Colours in Her Hair," "Obviously," and "That Girl." They again reached number one with 2005's Wonderland, taking home the BRIT Award for Best Pop Act that same year. They have remained chart favorites, reaching the U.K. Top 20 with 2006's Motion in the Ocean, 2008's Radio:Active, and 2010's Above the Noise. In 2014, they released McBusted, the eponymous debut from the combined McFly and Busted supergroup. Following a greatest-hits tour and live album, McFly returned with Young Dumb Thrills, hitting number two on the U.K. Albums Chart. The band's rockin', power pop-infused seventh album, Power to Play, arrived in 2023.

The roots of McFly go back to 2001 when singer/guitarist Tom Fletcher auditioned for the pop-punk group Busted. However, instead of joining the band, he signed on to the group's songwriting team. It was in this capacity that he eventually met singer/guitarist Danny Jones and began collaborating on their own material. By 2003, they had officially formed a band, adding bassist/vocalist Dougie Poynter and drummer Harry Judd. Naming themselves after Michael J. Fox's character from the Back to the Future series, McFly released Room on the Third Floor in the fall of 2004 on Universal. The album went straight to number one in the U.K., an achievement that landed them in The Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest band ever to do so. It produced a slew of Top Five hits as well, including "Five Colours in Her Hair," "Obviously," "That Girl," and "Room on the Third Floor," the first two of which peaked at number one on the U.K. charts.

McFly started off 2005 with a Best Pop Award win at the Brits, and later in the year released the charity single "All About You," which also contained a B-side cover of Carole King's "You've Got a Friend." The proceeds from the single benefited African communities affected by HIV/AIDS, and as a result, the band spent some time early in the year visiting with some of these villages in Uganda.

McFly issued their follow-up record, Wonderland, in the U.K. in August 2005, again topping the UK Albums Chart. The subsequent Wonderland Tour 2005 DVD, filmed during a show in Manchester, appeared that fall. The bandmembers next surfaced with roles as themselves in the spring 2006 Lindsay Lohan teen movie Just My Luck. A record of the same name, though not the movie's soundtrack, was released that May in the United States, which contained tracks from their other albums.

The full-length Motion in the Ocean followed that fall, hitting number six on the UK Albums Chart. One of its singles, "Please, Please," caused an initial stir among gossip columns and bloggers as it was apparently written by members of McFly (everyone but Judd, that is) about Judd's alleged romantic relationship with Lindsay Lohan on the film's set.

During 2007, the band released a compilation titled All the Greatest Hits, which collected their top U.K. singles and included new songs, such as single "The Heart Never Lies." The following year, they traveled across the world to Australia and set about recording their fourth studio album, Radio:Active. The record was self-released on their Super label, after the group parted ways with Island Records. It was first issued via a promotion with British newspaper The Mail on Sunday before appearing in stores alongside a deluxe edition.

McFly returned to Island in 2010 and released Above the Noise, where they teamed up with producers Dallas Austin and Taio Cruz on a couple of tracks. They moved away from the adolescent pop-punk sound of their previous releases and opted to embrace their pop sensibilities for their fifth disc, displayed on lead single "Party Girl." In 2011, Poynter entered and eventually won on the British TV series I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, and later that year, Judd won the televised dance competition Strictly Come Dancing. A year later, a second greatest-hits collection appeared, Memory Lane: The Best of McFly, which featured U.K. number one singles "All About You," "Five Colours in Her Hair," and "Transylvania," and represented a concise collection from the pop/rockers.

The band's extracurricular activities continued into 2013 as they hooked up with fellow punk-poppers Busted to form the supergroup McBusted. The combined bands embarked on a tour and released the eponymously titled McBusted in 2014. The group's tenure was cut short when former Busted member Charlie Simpson returned to the band.

McFly made their return in 2016 with a sold-out greatest-hits tour and a subsequent live album. In early 2019, the group announced their return to music, before issuing a compilation of unreleased demos, The Lost Songs. This was followed in 2020 by the group's first studio effort in ten years, Young Dumb Thrills. Showcasing the singles "Happiness" and "Growing Up," the album reached number two in the UK. Three years later, they delivered their seventh studio album, Power to Play, which found them embracing their pop-punk roots on songs like "Where Did All the Guitars Go?" and "God of Rock & Roll." ~ Matt Collar & Corey Apar.

Taylor Swift's Friends Pick Their Favorite 'TTPD' Songs

Taylor Swift ‘s The Tortured Poets Department is one of the most talked about albums of 2024 – and not just amongst her fans.

Celebrities and friends like Lana Del Rey , Sophie Turner and more have been outspoken about their love for Swift's 11th studio album, which she announced during her acceptance speech for Best Pop Vocal Record at the 66th annual Grammy Awards in February 2024.

"[The way I can celebrate] is by telling you a secret that I've been keeping from you for the past two years, which is that my brand new album comes out April 19th," she told the crowd. "It's called The Tortured Poets Department and I'm going to go post the cover right now backstage."

After posting the black-and-white artwork for the album, which showed Swift lying across a bed in black lingerie, the 14-time Grammy winner wrote via Instagram, "And so I enter into evidence my tarnished coat of arms."

Celebrities on Their Favorite Taylor Swift Era or Song: Ryan Gosling, More

She added, "My muses acquired like bruises, my talismans and charms. The tick, tick, tick of love bombs. My view of pitch-black ink. All's fair in love and poetry … Sincerely, The Chairman of the Tortured Poets Department."

After the album was released in April 2024, Swift surprised fans hours later by releasing 15 more songs.

"It's a 2 am surprise: The Tortured Poets Department is a secret DOUBLE album," she wrote via social media . "I'd written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so here's the second installment of TTPD: The Anthology . 15 extra songs. And now the story isn't mine anymore … it's all yours."

Keep reading to see which TTPD songs Swift's friends are loving the most.

Reese Witherspoon

Witherspoon named her top three songs off Swift's 11th studio album shortly after its release, revealing via her Instagram Story that her favorites were "So Long, London," "Guilty as Sin?" and "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart."

Taylor Swift Through the Years

Keleigh Teller

Teller, who is one of Swift's closest friends, posted a video via TikTok in April 2024 in which she was listening to "So Long, London," adding in the caption, "I founded the club she's heard [great] things about. What's everyone's favorite song and why?"

After a fan commented, "‘I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,'" Teller replied , "As a friend, this one hurts so much. She goes on stage sad or happy. It's so incredible."

Lana Del Rey

While speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the Met Gala in May 2024, the "Summertime Sadness" singer told the outlet that her favorite track is "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?"

"It's beautiful," she added.

Sophie Turner

Turner – who crashed at Swift's Tribeca home after her separation from Joe Jonas following four years of marriage – posted a screenshot of her favorite jam, "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" via her Instagram Story.

(Swift and Jonas briefly dated for about three months in 2008, but he famously broke up with her in a 27-second phone call.)

Jack Antonoff

Antonoff, who along with The National frontman Aaron Dessner produced and cowrote TTPD , said via Instagram that his top moment from working on the album was "the day we made ‘Down Bad.'"

Everything to Know About 'The Tortured Poets Department'

He added, "My favorite work we have made together / made in the most wild unhinged moment. All the pain distilled in this album and all the laughter that came out of it. Will hold those days in the studio forever as the most inspiring of my life. I adore this album and the way it came together. TTPD FOREVER."

Maya Hawke and Ethan Hawke

Maya, a longtime Swiftie who turned dad Ethan into a fan, revealed two of her favorite songs via her Instagram Story : "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" and "But Daddy I Love Him," the latter of which she captioned, "What the heck this is sooo good."

Though Ethan has yet to reveal a favorite track, he appeared in the music video for the album's first single, "Fortnight (ft. Post Malone )," alongside his Dead Poets Society costar and lifelong friend Josh Charles .

Grey's Anatomy's Jessica Capshaw Took Daughter to Paris for 'Eras Tour'

"We got this call: ‘Taylor's releasing an album, The Tortured Poets Department . And I think she wanted to hide a little easter egg about Dead Poets Society in it," Ethan said during a May 2024 appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert .

He added, "For Josh and I, we laughed ourselves silly the whole day. We felt like the biggest rock stars in the world."

After being asked what her favorite TTPD song is while posing at the 2024 Met Gala, Hadid simply replied, "‘Down Bad.'"

Hayley Williams

The Paramore frontwoman – who has been friends with Swift since their early days in the Nashville music scene – praised the second part of the double album via Instagram after its release. (Paramore joined Swift for a brief stint on her Eras Tour in 2023 and will join her on the European leg of her tour from May to August 2024.)

" The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology . Had me from the storytelling alone, my friend," Williams wrote. "Every one of us knows this kind of grief! It's so impressive to me how specific and colorful Taylor's words get without ever losing the universal thread. I'm so ready to be tour-mates."

Selena Gomez

During her May 2024 appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, Gomez told fans that "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" is her favorite TTPD track.

Emmys: If ‘Shogun’ Is a Drama and ‘True Detective’ Isn’t, Does the Limited Series Category Make Sense Anymore?

Popular on Variety

Those were the early days of gaming the Emmys . Later, it was all about shows like PBS’ “Downton Abbey” entering the miniseries (as they were called then) field — and then suddenly being picked up for another season and moving to drama. HBO’s “Big Little Lies” and “The White Lotus” also did the limited series-to-drama-series transition. Elsewhere, there was plenty of outcry when some of Netflix’s “Black Mirror” episodes found their way into (and won) the TV movie competition — leading to the TV Academy redefining how long a “TV movie” can be. And so on.

But I’m not sure we’ve ever seen category confusion on the level of this year. Some of it comes from strategy, but it’s also not always easy to pick a lane when genres are so blended these days. There’s no quick answer: After complaints that contenders were going category shopping, for several years the TV Academy had a rule that half-hour programs were comedies and hourlong shows were dramas. But that stipulation was ultimately seen as too confining, and once again anything goes.

As Variety awards guru Clayton Davis has reported, sometimes strategy comes up against TV Academy rules. AMC had planned to submit “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” in the limited or anthology series category. But given that the show revolves around two of the main characters from “The Walking Dead,” Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), it was deemed ineligible there. That’s because a limited or anthology series must feature a story contained to that season, without any ongoing storylines.

Last week, FX said that it was exploring additional seasons of “ Shogun ” — originally announced as a limited series — moving it to the drama category. Meanwhile, HBO’s “The Sympathizer” and Apple TV+’s “Masters of the Air” flirted with the idea of entering the drama race, but ultimately decided to remain in the limited series field. Then there are the “anthology” shows that, yes, contain standalone seasons and characters. But these are still TV series: “True Detective” was originally submitted (and earned noms) in Season 1 as a drama, before switching to limited/anthology. And yet, it has a certain tone that carries throughout, right up through the latest “Night Country” installment. “American Horror Story” eventually had to switch to drama because its “anthology” began to incorporate too much from past seasons.

The fact that so many shows could jump between limited/anthology and either drama or comedy (and have!) makes me wonder: Have we moved past the point of “limited” making sense as a category? Remember when “miniseries” used to be a particular kind of longform? Now, we’re just putting more TV shows in the limited category when they could just as well be in the drama field.

In the streaming age, most shows might be considered limited — airing between six and eight episodes a season, and lasting one to three seasons at most. “Limited” is not a genre, and it sometimes feels like it has simply morphed into another “outstanding drama” category. Try to define a “limited” series: You can’t really, right? Such classification feels so, well, limiting .
