Trusted Traveler Programs (or TTPs) allow members to use expedited lanes at U.S. airports and when crossing international borders. They are specifically set up to preapprove “low-risk” travelers, and each applicant must meet a set of minimum requirements in order to be approved.

You may have spent time filling out an application for one of these TTPs, such as Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, paid your non-refundable application fee, and are anxiously awaiting your new status, only to find out that your application was denied! You aren’t alone. About 1% of all applications received by Global Entry and TSA PreCheck applications are denied.

So what happened? Why were you denied membership? How will you be notified of this denial? And is there anything you can do to make U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reconsider?

In some cases, you may have already had membership in a TTP and were notified that your membership was revoked. What might have happened to cause you to lose your status?

Whether you’re applying for the first time or renewing, or your status has been revoked, read on for all of the details about membership denials or revocations for all 5 Trusted Traveler Programs.

So you’re waiting to hear if your application to be a part of a TTP was approved. Or maybe you already have a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck membership and you’re notified that it’s been revoked. So what happens next? Well, if you’re approved, you’re good to go. Otherwise, here’s what will happen.

You’re Notified

As soon as your application is denied or membership revoked, you will receive a follow-up letter electronically through your TTP account that you used to submit your application.

This letter will include more details about the reason for this denial, however, it may not always be spelled out in great detail. For example, your letter might simply state that you “No Longer Meet Eligibility Requirements.” We’ll break down what this might mean as we discuss the common reasons for having your membership revoked or renewal not approved.

Application Fee Not Refunded

Unfortunately, the application fee that you paid ($50 to $122.25, depending on the program) is non-refundable — even in the case of a denial. You won’t receive a refund for any fees paid.

Appeals Process

There is an appeals process to dispute a decision, but it differs based on the TTP you applied for. We’ll break down the steps of the appeals process towards the end of this article.

CBP doesn’t typically make information regarding the TTP denials public, but it did respond to a Freedom of Information Act request back in 2017. The report it issued details each instance where membership was denied or revoked from November 6, 2016, t0 June 6, 2017, and gives us a lot of insight into recurring themes.

Bottom Line: It’s important to know that CBP is getting information about you from a variety of sources — including state and local government databases, FBI databases, and even sometimes from other countries.

We’ve taken this information and broken it down into the 4 most common reasons TTP status is taken away or not granted in the first place:

1. No Longer Meets Eligibility Requirements

Generally, you’ll want to disclose every pending or prior conviction on your record as a part of your application, no matter how old. If something is discovered later or you have a recent conviction (even if you’ve already been approved), your membership could be denied (or revoked).

Things like DUIs don’t automatically disqualify you from being approved as long as they’re over 10 years old, but there are some types of convictions that are permanently disqualifying. A list of permanently disqualifying convictions isn’t clearly documented anywhere and seems to be determined on a case-by-case basis.

You could also have your application denied if derogatory information was received from another country — meaning, any trouble you run into abroad could impact your membership in a TTP.

2. Not Declaring Goods at Customs

This category is a big repeat offender on the CBP list. For example, not declaring:

  • Agricultural items (like plants, fruits, vegetables, soil, etc.)
  • Items exceeding  your duty-free personal exemption (exemption amount varies based on the country you visited and length of stay, or alcohol over 1 liter)
  • Foreign currency exceeding the USD equivalent of $10,000

US CBP Declaration Form

All of the following can land you with a fine from CBP AND a TTP denial or membership revocation.

Just to be safe, check your bags for items your might have unintentionally left behind, including snacks from the plane. And if you do bring something back, just be sure you note it on your customs form upon arrival.

Bottom Line: Don’t worry — these rules are all listed on the CBP’s Customs Declaration form, so you don’t have to remember these details! Just make sure you read the form carefully to avoid unintentionally forgetting to declare something.

3. Breaking Rules in the Immigrations Hall

Upon arrival back into the U.S., it’s important to be on your best behavior. Things like cutting in line or trying to bring family members who don’t have Global Entry to the kiosk can have big repercussions.

Hot Tip: This might mean you have to fill out separate CBP Customs Declaration forms if you have Global Entry and your other family members do not.

In addition, if you’re using your Global Entry card to enter the U.S. using an expedited travel lane at a land crossing, everyone in the car needs to have Global Entry status, too. Depending on the agent you encounter, breaking these rules can result in your membership being revoked — even if it’s an accident!

4. Uncooperative Behavior

Going hand in hand with the item above, but encompassing a bit more, if you decide to take your frustrations out on a CBP or TSA agent, know that your TTP status could be revoked. If you are also not forthcoming during your TTP interview, this could also be considered uncooperative behavior as well.

As COVID-19 and mask mandates weren’t around when this report was issued in 2017, we are just making an educated guess here, but if you refuse to wear a mask while going through TSA security or on a plane, this might also result in your losing your TTP status.

Global Entry

CBP International Travel Preclearance Operations in Canada Global Entry

Main Benefits

The main reasons to join Global Entry (GE) include:

  • Access to expedited lines at major U.S. airports  when returning from an international destination
  • Access to expedited entry benefits in other countries (also known as preclearance )
  • TSA PreCheck is included for domestic travel

Once granted, you will have all of the benefits of Global Entry for 5 years.

Hot Tip: See our in-depth article to see all of the benefits and steps required to get Global Entry status:  The Global Entry Program: From Application to Airport [+ Map of Locations & Kiosks] .

Eligibility

U.S. citizens, U.S. lawful permanent residents, and citizens of select countries are eligible to apply for Global Entry. If you are under the age of 18, you must have your parent or legal guardian’s consent to participate in the program.

You must meet certain criteria (that CBP doesn’t make public) in order to deem you a “low-risk” traveler. Keep in mind that you don’t simply have to meet the eligibility requirements BEFORE you apply. You must remain eligible at all points during your 5-year membership.

Ineligibility

The CBP website notes that “Any violation of the program’s terms and conditions will result in the appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges.” But what does that mean?

Specifically, you are deemed ineligible and will have your membership denied (or revoked) if you do any of the following:

  • Provide false or incomplete information on your GE application
  • Have any criminal history (even if it’s not related to customs or a security threat)
  • Have been found in violation of any customs, immigration, or agriculture regulations or laws (in any country)
  • Are the subject of an ongoing investigation by any federal, state, or local law enforcement agency
  • CBP cannot grant you low-risk status

This last category appears to be a catch-all, but you can see that there are many reasons you can be denied. And as a reminder, if any of the items above change, your status can be revoked at any point in your membership.

See our list of the top 4 reasons your status may get denied or revoked in the section above for some specific examples.

TSA PreCheck

TSA PreCheck Fly With Assurance

The main reasons to join the TSA PreCheck program include:

  • No need to remove shoes, laptops, 3-1-1 liquids, belts, or light jackets when going through TSA security checkpoints
  • Expedited security screening (TSA claims that most travelers get through security in 5 minutes or less)
  • PreCheck is available at over  200 airports domestically
  • Children (under 18) may accompany a parent/guardian for free

Once granted, you will have all of the benefits of TSA PreCheck for 5 years.

TSA PreCheck is only open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and lawful permanent residents. Children aged 12 and under are free with a parent or guardian. Children aged 13 to 17 may accompany a TSA PreCheck-approved parent when they are on the same reservation and have the TSA PreCheck designation on their boarding pass.

TSA notes that applicants may be ineligible due to “incomplete or false application information, violations of transportation security regulations, or disqualifying criminal offenses and factors .”

TSA breaks down disqualifying offenses into 3 categories:

  • Permenantly Disqualifying Criminal Offenses , including offenses like espionage, treason, murder, and terrorism
  • Interim Disqualifying Criminal Offenses , including offenses like violent crime, immigration violations, fraud, smuggling, incomplete or inaccurate application, or illegal position of a firearm (the length of time that the item is disqualifying depends on the offense as well as the plea)
  • Under Want, Warrant, or Indictment , including pending cases

See the full TSA list of disqualifying offenses for more details.

SENTRI Crossing

The main reasons you’d want to be a member of the SENTRI program are to reduce wait times at ports of entry using:

  • Dedicated processing lanes at southern land border crossings from Mexico
  • NEXUS lane when entering the U.S. from Canada by land
  • Global Entry kiosks when entering the U.S. by air

Once granted, you will have all of the benefits of SENTRI for 5 years.

There are no citizenship or age requirements to qualify for SENTRI membership. If you are under 18, you must have your parent or legal guardian’s consent to apply.

CBP notes that you are no longer considered eligible if you:

  • Provide false or incomplete information on your SENTRI application

The biggest violations for SENTRI memberships are related to customs violations. You will not only pay a fine but will have your SENTRI membership revoked.

NEXUS U.S. Canada agents

The main reasons you’d want to be a member of the NEXUS program are to reduce wait times at ports of entry using:

  • Dedicated processing lanes at land border crossings to/from Canada
  • NEXUS kiosks when entering Canada
  • Global Entry kiosk when entering the U.S.
  • Marine telephone reporting center to report your water arrival in the U.S and Canada

Once granted, you will have all of the benefits of NEXUS for 5 years from your next birthday.

U.S. citizens, U.S. lawful permanent residents, Canadian citizens, Canadian lawful permanent residents, and Mexican nationals who are members of Viajero Confiable are eligible to apply for membership in the NEXUS program. If you are under 18, you must have your parent or legal guardian’s consent to apply.

NEXUS is slightly different from other TTPs as you’ll need to have both the U.S. and Canada approve your application. Denial of an application by either country will prevent you from participating in the NEXUS program.

As far as disqualifying items, if you do any of the following, you are no longer considered eligible for the program:

  • Provide false or incomplete information on your NEXUS application
  • CBP or the Canada Border Services Agency cannot grant you low-risk status

Free and Secure Trade FAST Lane

Not as well-known as the programs above, Free and Secure Trade (FAST) is a program specifically for commercial truck drivers entering and exiting the U.S. from Canada and Mexico. You can apply for FAST North or FAST South, depending on your needs.

Primarily, you will benefit from the use of designated FAST lanes to more quickly transport goods into the U.S.

U.S. citizens, U.S. lawful permanent residents, Canadian citizens, Canadian lawful permanent residents, and Mexican nationals who are 18 years or older and possess a valid driver’s license are eligible for a FAST membership.

  • Provide false or incomplete information on your FAST application
  • Have been found in violation of any customs, immigration, or agriculture regulations or laws (in any country!)
  • Fail to meet other requirements of the FAST Commercial Driver Program

If you’ve been denied membership or had your membership revoked, this decision doesn’t have to be final. You can appeal this decision and ask your case to be reviewed again. Or maybe you don’t feel that you were given sufficient information regarding why your application was denied or your membership revoked?

Either way, the process is similar, no matter which TTP you had your membership revoked or denied with. In order to appeal your TTP membership decision or get more information, you’ll want to:

1. Gather all of your documents together, including:

  • Original denial letter
  • Clarifying information, such as an explanation of an arrest, record, or incident
  • Court disposition documentation (in PDF) for all arrests or convictions (even if expunged)
  • Other supporting documentation you feel might help your appeal
  • Request for more details (if applicable)

Hot Tip: Appeals are done on a case-by-case basis and the information required to appeal will be different. For instance, if you have a 20-year-old DUI that was the cause of your denial, you might want to include details about how you’ve been rehabilitated since then and note that you’ve had no other incidents that would deem you “high-risk.”

2. Write a letter to the local Enrollment Center where your interview took place

  • Write a letter requesting an appeal of the decision
  • Include copies of all relevant information gathered above
  • Label the envelope “Redress Request RE: Global Entry”

3. Write a letter to the CBP Trusted Traveler Ombudsman

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Attn: CBP Ombudsman P.O. Box 946 Williston, VT 05495

According to the L.A. Times , this appeals process can take “as much as 8 months,” but could be even longer now due to delays related to COVID-19.

Ultimately, the U.S. government views membership in a TTP as a privilege rather than a right and it reserves the right to deny your application or revoke your membership for any number of reasons. Unfortunately, there’s not always a clear set of guidelines to follow when it comes to denials, revoked memberships, or even the appeals process.

If you have had your membership in a TTP revoked or denied, start by reviewing the information you were given. See if this information was erroneous or you otherwise believe you have a case for the decision to be appealed. Contact your local enrollment center to get more information regarding your denial or membership revocation. Hopefully, you can make your case that you are a low-risk traveler and renew your trusted traveler program status soon!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my global entry get revoked.

Your Global Entry could have been revoked due to fact that you are no longer eligible due to new or previously unknown incidents, a new customs or immigration violation, or even information told to CBP by other countries. You will receive a letter detailing the reasons that your membership was revoked through your TTP account .

Why did my TSA PreCheck get revoked?

If your TSA PreCheck membership was revoked, TSA could have learned of information that changes you from a low-risk traveler to a high-risk traveler. This could be due to new or previously unknown information related to incidents or prior arrests, or new charges, among other things. You will get a letter in your TTP account that details the reasons your membership was revoked.

How do I restore my TSA PreCheck?

If you have lost your TSA PreCheck status, you can appeal this decision. You’ll need to gather your documents, including information you think may help your appeal, and submit it to TSA and/or the ombudsman in charge of your case. Details on how to do this and what to include in your appeal are listed in the article above.

How do I restore my Global Entry?

If you have lost your Global Entry membership due to a change in your eligibility status, you can still appeal this decision. We have complete details on the process you’ll need to take in the article above, but in short, you’ll have to convince CBP that you are still a “low-risk” traveler. How you will do this will depend on why your status was revoked in the first place.

How long does a TSA PreCheck suspension last?

There are certain offenses that are temporary and will bar you from being eligible for TSA PreCheck. Most of these offenses restrict you from membership from between 5 and 7 years. Others will result in a permanent disqualification.

For a full list of disqualifying offenses and associated time frames, see the full TSA list .

If My US Visa Is Rejected, When Can I Apply Again?

Whether employment visa, student visa, or non-immigrant visa, getting a refusal is disheartening.

In such a case, one question might arise in everyone’s mind – If my US visa is rejected , when can I apply again?

The short answer is – you can apply again for the visa depending on the reason for your refusal. If your refusal is for specific circumstances that need to be changed, it’s suggested that you wait until you resolve the issue.

TLDR; Make sure to learn the refusal reason and correct them. Then re-apply for a new visa.

Did Your Circumstances Change?

When you re-apply for a US visa , the new visa officer will try to find what exactly changed since the last refusal. If you go for the interview with the same preparation, the outcome like be the same.

Either your circumstances need to be changed significantly or you need to come up with an updated application and interview strategy.

Can I Apply for a US Visa if I Was Rejected 3 Times?

The simple answer is YES.

Many people think applying for a US visa is impossible if the visa officers reject you 3 consecutive times.

In reality, it is a complete misconception.

How Many Times Can I Apply for a U.S. Visa After Rejection?

You can apply for a US visa unlimited times regardless of number of rejections. However, there are conditions.

Unlimited doesn’t mean you keep applying repeatedly without checking and correcting your mistakes.

It is crucial to learn what went wrong when the visa officer rejected your application. Then, correct those mistakes during the next application.

Remember, every time, you have to submit supporting documents. Also, updating the information is essential.

So, the prime point is:

You can apply for a US visa for unlimited times. All you need to do is learn the reason for rejection and update your information.

However, if you are involved with fraudulent information on a previous application, you can permanently be ineligible for a US visa.

How do You Increase Your Chances of Getting a US Visa?

Consulate officers make decisions by examining a few points during the visa interview. Here are a few tips that will help you increase your chances of getting a US visa.

1. Employment

Do you have a stable job in your home country?

If yes, your chances of getting a US visa increase. Also, the visa officer will check how long you have been working, your job type, and your salary to determine your economic and financial ties with the country.

2. Show and Prove Strong Ties to Home

Showing sufficient proof of strong ties to home is crucial. Such a thing proves that you will return to your home country after the visit. There are a lot of factors that can prove your strong home ties, including your left-behind family members, social economic conditions, immovable assets, etc.

Otherwise, the visa officer may refuse your visa if they suspect you are trying to misuse the visa.

3. Prepare an In-depth Travel Itinerary

The Visa officer will ask you a few questions, such as,

  • When do you intend to travel to the USA?
  • Where are you planning to travel?
  • Why are you traveling?

Prepare your travel itinerary with a precise location and travel intention in mind. Be remindful; more details mean better.

4. Practice for the Visa Interview

Unfortunately, many non-immigrants overlook visa interviews. In reality, it is a crucial step.

Your visa will be rejected if all your papers are OK but you fail to satisfy the consular officer during the interview. US visa is interview-based, so the visa officers will hardly ask for any documentation. All they need is the information you provide.

So, prepare yourself ahead of time. Carry all the supporting documents. Practice for the interview by answering the most commonly asked questions.

Seek Expert Guidance

If a US Visa officer says no to your visa request, don’t worry. You can try again. But don’t just blindly keep applying. It’s better to seek legal help or expert consultancy. A legal professional or expert can figure out what happened with your last application and how you can overcome the situation on your next application .

my travel pass rejected

What should I do before travelling to Malaysia? Ensure that you have made flight arrangements to Malaysia. Please be advised that you are only allowed to enter Malaysia via KLIA and KLIA2 entry points. International Students that attempt to enter Malaysia from other entry points will be denied entry and may risk being deported to their country of origin. Once your departure date is confirmed, undergo the RT-PCR Covid-19 Test three (3) days before travelling to Malaysia. The RT-PCR Covid-19 test result must be translated in ENGLISH so that the respective authorities in Malaysia can inspect it. Next, please complete the online payment for the Quarantine and the Covid-19 Screening Test through MySafeTravel (www.safetravel.myeg.com.my) / MyQr application by MyEG (www.myeg.gov.my). This procedure is required as you will be required to undergo an RT-PCR test and quarantine upon arrival in Malaysia. Download the MySejahtera mobile application.MySejahterais an application developed by the Government of Malaysia to assist in monitoring COVID-19 outbreak in the country. Be very careful with your surroundings. Practice social distancing and good hygiene. Do your best to avoid any occasion that might expose you further to the COVID-19 virus. What will happen once I arrive in Malaysia? Upon arrival, you will be carefully escorted by the relevant authorities to the Ministry of Health (MOH) personnel. At this point, you will be required to show proof of the negative RT-PCR test result obtained from your country of origin. You are also required to show proof of the payment receipt of the Quarantine cost and the Covid-19 Screening Test from MySafeTravel (www.safetravel.myeg.com.my) / MyQr application by MyEG. Upon verification, you may proceed to the Immigration Counter for clearance to enter Malaysia. Once you have obtained clearance from the Immigration Department, you will be assigned to a quarantine station. Our EMGS representatives will be obtaining this information from you to be furnished to your institution. Government officials will then bring you to the quarantine station assigned to you. During this time, you are required to undergo quarantine for seven (7) to fourteen (14) days upon arrival to Malaysia before continuing your studies. The duration is subject to the students furnishing their RT-PCR Covid-19 test results at the international arrival gate. International students that are not able to provide RT-PCR Covid-19 test results or if the test results are not valid/acceptable by Ministry of Health, the students will be subjected to a quarantine period of ten (10) days. Please note that you will not be allowed to leave the quarantine premises throughout the quarantine period. On the 5th day (For a quarantine period of 7 days) or 8th day (For a quarantine period of 10 days) or 10th day (For a quarantine period of 14 days), you will undergo an antibody test. If your result shows as negative, you will be given a release order and your institution will make travel arrangements for you to return to the institution, however, if your result is positive, MOH guidelines will apply. Please take note that students with nationality or coming from the United Kingdom and India are not allowed to enter Malaysia

What should I do once my Visa Approval Letter is approved/extended? Once your Visa Approval Letter is approved by the Immigration Department, a Travel Authorisation Letter will be issued along with it. To access these documents, please enter the relevant information under the following fields in Track My Application Travel Document Number Nationality Application Type: Student Visa You will see an option to download the eVAL and Travel Authorisation Letter. Download these documents and make sure you keep a copy of it in your mobile phone. You may be required to apply for a Single Entry Visa (Depending on your nationality) prior to travelling to Malaysia. Please check with your Malaysian Mission for more information on this matter. Once you have obtained all of these documents, you may proceed to travel to Malaysia. Learn more: https://visa.educationmalaysia.gov.my/guidelines/travel-authorisation-new-student.html

9 common mistakes you’re making while applying for a Schengen visa

By Condé Nast Traveller

Visa stamp in passport closeup. European visitor visa at border control. Macro view of Schengen visa for tourism and...

You’ve booked that dream vacation to Europe after waiting for a visa appointment for months. The last thing you would want is your application getting rejected because of that one minuscule detail you’ve missed out on. In 2021, over 13% of all Schengen visa applications from around the world were turned down. Of all the applications that came from India, Sweden rejected 833 or 42.26% of 1,974 visa applications, whereas Norway turned down 30.69% of all requests. France issued 25,482 visas and turned down 11,959 applications in 2021. To ensure that your Schengen visa application is not rejected, here’s a list of mistakes to avoid:

Common mistakes made when applying for a Schengen visa

Booking flights before booking your visa interview.

Diplomatic missions are reeling under a resource crunch combined with the resurgence of travel, which is leading to severe delays in visa appointments. Getting a visa appointment can take months, depending on your destination and where you are applying from. While you need to show proof of travel to apply for a Schengen visa, travel agents say it is safer to book the actual tickets only after you secure a visa appointment.

Booking dummy tickets and accommodation

Travellers who are unsure of their plans often use third-party websites to get fully refundable accommodation and tickets, and cancel them right after getting a confirmation voucher. What they don’t realise is that nothing stops the officer from conducting a check on whether the booking still holds. Pratim Akash, founder of Elite Tours & Travels, has seen several rejections over the past few months due to such ‘dummy bookings’. “People tend to do shady things like edit the ticket on a word document or block air-tickets without confirmed bookings on third-party websites.” It is important to ensure that your ticket is genuine, and your reservation is valid, or your visa could be rejected and you could end up going to the back of the queue.

Not booking a return ticket

A Schengen visitor visa is valid only for 90 days, and you must return within the time frame. A return ticket proves that you will not overstay your visit, and not providing one will lead to a rejection of your visa application.

Not providing an itinerary for the trip

One must apply for a visa for the country that they will be spending the maximum time in. Not being able to provide the accommodation for each night in the Schengen area and train/flight tickets or a car rental booking for travel within the region can lead to a rejection of your visa application.

Nor providing correct sponsor details

If you’re being sponsored by a family member or a company, it is important to mention that while filling out your visa application form. Your sponsor will also need to provide a letter of sponsorship. If a family member is sponsoring your trip, you will need to provide their financial statements. If your sponsor resides in Europe, they will need to provide supporting documents such as an invitation letter and proof of accommodation.

Not submitting a passport that is valid

Your passport should be issued within the last 10 years and must be valid for at least three months beyond the date on which you intend to leave the Schengen territory. In justified emergency cases, the Consulate may deviate from this rule, as per the VFS Global website.

Not having a proper insurance cover

Travellers are required to have a minimum coverage of €30,000 (Rs23 lakh ) on their visit. The policy must cover all areas of the Schengen region for the entire duration of your stay. It should also cover any expenses that may arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent health attention or emergency health treatment. A policy that does not meet all these needs can get rejected. Akash recommends buying a policy that spans five days prior to and after the date of your actual travel plans, as it gives you enough flexibility in case of any change in plans.

Not providing a valid letter of employment

The letter of employment issued by your workplace should be issued within three months from the date of your application. It should carry a letterhead with the address and contact details of the company issuing the letter. A letter without a stamp and signature could be rejected.

Not showing credible proof of funds

Different countries in the Schengen region have different financial requirements . For instance, if you’re visiting France, you must have €120 (Rs9,387) for each day of your visit if holding no proof of prepaid accommodation. If the applicant has a prepaid hotel, the amount is €65 (Rs5,085). For Spain, a traveller needs to have at least €100 (Rs7,821) per day, with a minimum of €900 (Rs70,424) for the entire trip, irrespective of the duration of stay. For Italy, a traveller visiting for 5 days should hold €269.60 (Rs21048), and for 6-10 days about €44.93 (Rs3,442) per day. Look up the country’s requirements beforehand and ensure that you have enough to fund your trips. You can submit a three-month bank statement, payslips or your credit card statement. Keep in mind that your financial statement should not be more than a month old from the date of application.

Akash recommends building your balance over a period of six months, and not getting a third person to transfer money to your account a few days before your appointment. “This is a major red flag, and could definitely get your visa rejected,” he says. If you’re travelling solo, providing property papers, whether it’s in your name or your parent's name could be very useful. “It assures the visa officer that you will return to the country.”

5 Common Reasons Form N-400 Gets Denied

Reasons Form N-400 Denied by USCIS

U.S. citizenship is perhaps the greatest benefit any immigrant can receive. It is often the pinnacle of a long journey over many years and many miles. Over 2.2 million permanent residents have naturalized as U.S. citizens in the past three years .

However, during the same period, over 240,000 permanent residents had their Form N-400, Application for Naturalization , denied. In fact, the number of denials increased in every quarter of fiscal year 2021. The denial rate held steady; USCIS denies approximately 9.5 percent of all applications. There are many reasons for this. We’ve compiled a list of the five common reasons for a continuation or denial of a Form N-400 application.

N-400 denials in FY2021

It’s important to understand that by filing N-400, the applicant is inviting U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to thoroughly review the immigrant’s entire case file one more time. There can be risks associated with this. USCIS may uncover something it didn’t find before. Therefore, it’s worthwhile to understand where other applicants have run into trouble. If you believe one of the following scenarios may affect you, speak to an immigration attorney before filing Form N-400.

Five common reasons for a continuation or denial of a Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, include:

CitizenPath Guarantees USCIS Will Approve Your N-400 When you prepare your N-400 on CitizenPath, we provide simple, step-by-step instructions and alerts to help you avoid costly delays. We even guarantee USCIS will approve your application. No credit card is required to start.

Form N-400 Denied Based on Selective Service

Male candidates may be surprised to learn that failing to register for Selective Service can create a major issue when filing Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. Men between the ages of 18 and 26 are expected to register for the Selective Service and provide proof for the purposes of naturalizing as a U.S. citizen. Failing to register can be grounds for denying an application for naturalization.

RECOMMENDED: Failing to Register for Selective Service

Request for Hearing after N-400 Denial

If USCIS determines you need to provide additional documents or evidence, you may be given Form N-14, Request for Additional Information, Documents or Forms. You will need to provide the additional documentation requested to continue the naturalization process.

If your N-400 was denied and you feel that USCIS was wrong to deny you citizenship, you may request a hearing with a USCIS officer. Your denial letter will explain how to request a hearing and will include the form you need. The form for filing an appeal is the N-336, Request for Hearing on a Decision in Naturalization Proceedings . You must file the form with USCIS, including the correct fee, within 30 days after you receive a denial letter.

So you’ve applied for your U.S. tourist visa and prepared for your interview — what’s next? At the end of the process, It is always at the discretion of a consular officer to either approve or deny your travel visa based on the evidence provided in your application and during your interview. Unfortunately, tourist visa denials do happen for a variety of reasons and it can be stressful to figure out what to do next.

In this guide, we’ll cover what to do if your B1/B2 visa is denied and important steps to take before you reapply in the future.

Applying for a B-1/B-2 visa is never a guarantee, but Boundless can help you file the strongest application possible. Our software assesses your risk of travel visa denial based on your specific situation and our experienced team helps you avoid common mistakes. Get started today!

Unsure about which immigration path is best for you? Answer a few simple questions to get started.

In most cases when a travel visa is denied, the U.S. Embassy or consulate provides the applicant with the reason for their denial and what section of immigration law applies.

Many B visa denials are issued under INA Section 214(b) , a law which applies to nonimmigrant visas and requires that applicants are able to prove strong ties to their home country and that they don’t intend to remain in the U.S. permanently if their visa is approved.

If your travel visa is denied, it is not possible to appeal the decision, but you can reapply in the future. If you choose to reapply, you will need to submit a new travel visa application (Form DS-160) , pay the filing fee again, and attend another visa interview . If you were originally denied due to a lack of strong ties to your home country, you’ll need to present new evidence and prove to the U.S. Embassy or consulate that your circumstances have changed since your last application.

It can be difficult to overcome the assumption of immigrant intent and prove that you intend to use your B2 visa for temporary travel only, which is why Boundless put together a guide on how to prove strong ties to your home country and increase your chance of visa approval.

Another common reason for travel visa denial is missing documents or incomplete information on your application, as outlined in INA Section 221(g) . This means that the consular officer was unable to determine if the applicant is eligible for a travel visa because the application is incomplete and pending further action. In this case, applicants are generally given a letter stating the application has been denied under 221(g) and informing the applicant of what is missing and how to provide it to the embassy or consulate.

If your travel visa is denied for incomplete or missing information, be sure to provide the missing evidence (either documents or additional information) as soon as possible. According to State Department guidelines, you have one year from the date your visa was denied to submit the missing information. Once you provide the missing information, the U.S. Embassy or consulate can revisit your tourist visa application to determine whether you qualify for a B1 or B2 visa.

If you’re unable to provide the missing documents or required information within one year, you will need to reapply for the tourist visa (file a new DS-160 and pay another application fee). Whether you’ve already received a 221(g) denial or you’re just starting the U.S. tourist visa process, be sure to read up on the travel visa document requirements so you can provide a complete, accurate application to the U.S. government.

Another aspect of the visitor visa decision process to be aware of is “ administrative processing .” Administrative processing occurs when a consular officer determines that additional information from sources other than the applicant themselves is needed before the B visa can be approved.

If your travel visa case is placed in administrative processing, you’ll be given a letter from the embassy or consulate stating this and what to expect after the administrative processing is complete. This step takes additional time after your visa interview, and processing times will vary case by case. If you have questions about administrative processing, what this means for your travel visa case, and how soon you can expect a decision, it’s best to reach out to the embassy or consulate directly.

Let’s say you’re found “ineligible” for a tourist visa. What do you do next?

In most cases, if a consular officer determines that you are ineligible for a B1/B2 visa, they will inform you whether or not you can apply for a waiver of inadmissibility .

An ineligibility waiver may help you successfully apply for a travel visa in the future, however there is no guarantee that your waiver will be approved. It is always at the discretion of the U.S. government to issue a waiver, and it is at the discretion of the consular officer who found you ineligible to recommend that you receive one. You can learn more about the waiver of inadmissibility process and how to apply in Boundless’ guide .

There’s no set rule or specific timeline for when you can reapply for a U.S. tourist visa after being denied, but there are some things to keep in mind.

If you were denied due to ineligibility , it’s important to understand the waiver process mentioned above before trying to apply again. You’ll need to first qualify for and receive a waiver before you can seek out a tourist visa for the second time.

If you were denied due to a lack of strong ties to home , you’ll need to gather stronger evidence and prove to the U.S. government that your circumstances have changed before applying again. It is likely that you’ll be denied if you apply again soon after, with no additional proof of strong ties to your home country or new ways to show you will use the tourist visa for its intended purpose. Likewise, if your denial was based on a lack of sufficient finances, it is generally best to wait until your financial situation improves and you’re able to fund your trip to the U.S. before reapplying.

Travel visa denials can be stressful, and in many cases, it may be possible to avoid them in the first place with some additional preparation and awareness. Read Boundless’ list of the most common reasons for tourist visa denials , so you can avoid mistakes and apply with confidence.

Best COVID Insurance for Thailand Pass

Based on experience, the common problem for Thailand Pass applications being rejected is that some insurance policies are not properly worded. Your COVID-19 insurance must expressly state that it covers up to 50,000 USD medical expenses including COVID-19 while in Thailand.

You may use your own health insurance or purchase an insurance from your own country, however, it is recommended to purchase from an insurance company in Thailand such as AXA Insurance Thailand to make sure that you meet the requirement in obtaining the Thailand Pass successfully.

  • Your certificate of insurance will expressly state that it covers up to 50,000 USD medical expenses including COVID-19. It will also state that the certificate is issued for the purpose of Thailand Pass application.
  • The AXA Sawasdee Thailand provides a one page certificate of insurance which is perfect for Thailand Pass application since the system will only allow one page document to be uploaded.
  • Your insurance letter or certificate will also contain the policy number and date of effectivity or start date.
  • The AXA Insurance policy must be effective before or on the date of arrival and during your entire length of stay.

Important Notes When Buying Travel Insurance

  • Avoid the insurance providers with COVID only coverage; they do not cover medical costs from accidents (like motorcycle accidents) or common unexpected illnesses (common fever or food poisoning).
  • AXA Sawasdee Thailand covers medical expenses (outpatient and inpatient) due to accidents and illnesses including COVID-19.
  • AXA Sawasdee Thailand also covers telemedicine and teleconsultation which may be required during the quarantine period of the patient.

Denied for Global Entry or PreCheck? Here's how to appeal

Jordyn Fields

No one enjoys waiting in what can seem like endless security lines at the airport. Frequent travelers know that Global Entry and TSA PreCheck are must-haves to make travel a breeze, but what if you are denied from the programs? The good thing is a denial doesn't always mean you have to say goodbye to an easy trip through the airport.

The Global Entry and TSA PreCheck programs are vital tools for the regular traveler. Global Entry allows international travelers to re-enter the United States through expedited immigration lanes that allow you to skip the often-overflowing lines you encounter at the border, while TSA PreCheck reduces the amount of screening needed to board a flight . With both programs, since you're receiving minimal screening as a trusted traveler, in order to be approved for the program you have to submit to a background check and a personal interview. Therefore it's not unusual that a blemish on your record — even a small one — can result in being denied for the program.

Why do people get denied?

Applicants get denied for a variety of reasons, some may seem like minor infractions you didn't even think twice about.

  • Past criminal history, no matter how minor or long ago
  • Currently under investigation by a law enforcement agency
  • Violation of customs, immigration or agriculture regulations
  • Prohibited and undeclared items
  • False or undisclosed information on your application

You can appeal

The good thing is you can actually appeal the decision. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will give you the reason for being denied by a Trusted Traveler program. However, it can be a little vague and CBP doesn't have a way for you to get more details on your application.

"We cannot provide you additional information about your specific situation, as your eligibility is determined by a myriad of factors evaluated by the vetting center and the CBP Officer that interviews you if you are conditionally approved."

Related: What you need to know about TSA PreCheck

With the information you do have, write a letter to the Ombudsman at [email protected] that states when and why CBP says you were denied. Also include your explanation of what happened in the incident that got you denied and any documents that can corroborate your story. You can also submit a reconsideration request through the application website .

TSA makes appealing a PreCheck decision a little easier. If you receive a letter of ineligibility , they will also attach a list of ways to proceed if you still want to try to enroll in PreCheck. Some include contacting your local agency or submitting a letter of appeal to [email protected] if you applied for PreCheck through Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI.

Related: 5 Reason to get PreCheck

"Eligibility for the TSA Pre[check]TM Application Program is within the sole discretion of TSA, which will notify individuals who are denied eligibility in writing of the reasons for the denial. If initially deemed ineligible, applicants will have an opportunity to correct cases of misidentification or inaccurate criminal or immigration records."

What if your denial was based on accurate information? There's good news. There are multiple reports of folks who got denied even though the incident in question was correctly reported, but still managed to get approved via an appeal . First, you'll want to write the CBP Ombudsman at this address:

US Customs and Border Protection P.O. Box 946 Williston, VT 05495 Attn: CBP Ombudsman

In your letter include not only all your information — name, address, phone and GOES ID number — but also explain the situation in detail and why you believe you should be approved. If it's a minor one-time incident from years ago, you can emphasize that, and if there is any inaccurate information, you'll definitely want to include supporting documentation that corrects the record. Do NOT lie . Basically, just make your case as best you can.

You can also send your letter via email to [email protected], but since this is a government agency, we strongly suggest you send a physical letter as well, perhaps by certified mail or with some sort of proof of mailing so that everything is documented. Then be prepared to wait. A while. The CBP website says that "a response may take months" so give it at least six months before following up. Hopefully you'll hear back within that time, either with good news that you have been reconsidered or with bad news that it's still a "no."

Related: Should you get TSA PreCheck or Clear? …Or both?

Unfortunately for those who are eager to utilize the benefits of Trusted Traveler programs, there is no guarantee of approval once an appeal is filed. There is also no set time frame for how long it takes a new decision to be reached. All we can suggest is to give it a chance.

U.S. law generally requires visa applicants to be interviewed by a consular officer at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. After relevant information is reviewed, the application is approved or denied, based on standards established in U.S. law.

While the vast majority of visa applications are approved, U.S. law sets out many standards under which a visa application may be denied. An application may be denied because the consular officer does not have all of the information required to determine if the applicant is eligible to receive a visa, because the applicant does not qualify for the visa category for which he or she applied, or because the information reviewed indicates the applicant falls within the scope of one of the inadmissibility or ineligibility grounds of the law. An applicant’s current and/or past actions, such as drug or criminal activities, as examples, may make the applicant ineligible for a visa.

If denied a visa, in most cases the applicant is notified of the section of law which applies. Visa applicants are also advised by the consular officer if they may apply for a waiver of their ineligibility. Several of the most common reasons for visa ineligibilities are explained below. For more information, review the  visa ineligibilities  in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

How does a visa applicant qualify for a visa?

You, as a visa applicant, qualify for a visa by being eligible under all applicable U.S. laws for the visa category for which you are applying. During your visa interview, the consular officer at the U.S Embassy or Consulate will determine if you are qualified for the type of visa for which you are applying.

The sole authority to approve or deny (called adjudicate) visa applications, under U.S. immigration law  section 104(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act , is given to consular officers at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

What does being found ineligible mean?

If a consular officer finds you are not eligible to receive a visa under U.S. law, your visa application will be denied (refused), and you will be provided a reason for the denial. There are many reasons a visa applicant could be found ineligible for a visa. These reasons, called ineligibilities, are listed in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) and other immigration laws. Some ineligibilities can be overcome, either by you, the visa applicant, or the U.S. petitioner, in certain immigrant visa cases. Other ineligibilities are permanent. This means that every time you apply for a visa, you will be found ineligible under the same section of law, unless a waiver of that ineligibility is authorized by the Department of Homeland Security. Learn about  waivers of ineligibility .

Here are some examples of visa ineligibilities, with INA references, which are explained further below.

The visa applicant:

  • Did not fully complete the visa application and/or provide all required supporting documentation - INA section 221(g)
  • Did not establish eligibility for the visa category being applied for or overcome the presumption of being an intending immigrant - INA section 214(b)
  • Was convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude - INA section 212(a)(2)(A)(i)(I)
  • Was convicted of a drug violation - INA section 212(a)(2)(A)(i)(II)
  • Has two or more criminal convictions for which the total sentence of confinement was 5 years or more - INA section 212(a)(2)(B)
  • Did not provide an adequate affidavit of support when one was required; therefore denied under public charge - INA section 212(a)(4)
  • Misrepresented a material fact or committed fraud to attempt to receive a visa – INA section 212(a)(6)(C)(i)
  • Previously remained longer than authorized in the United States - INA section 212(a)(9)(B)(i)

For a complete list of all visa ineligibilities contained in the Immigration and Nationality Act, see  Ineligibilities and Waivers: Laws .

I was found ineligible for a visa. Can I get my money back?

No. The fee that you paid is a non-refundable application processing fee.

Can I reapply for a visa?

After being found ineligible for a visa, you may reapply in the future. If you reapply for a visa after being found ineligible, with the exception of 221(g) refusals, you must submit a new visa application and pay the visa application fee again. If you were found ineligible under section 214(b) of the INA, you should be able to present evidence of significant changes in circumstances since your last application. See more information below under  INA section 214(b) .

Can a friend or relative inquire about my denied visa application?

Department of State visa case records are confidential under INA section 222(f), so information can only be provided to visa applicants, with some exceptions. Certain information can be provided to U.S. sponsors, attorneys representing visa applicants, members of Congress, or other persons acting on behalf of and with the permission of applicants.

INA Section 221(g) - Incomplete Application or Supporting Documentation

What does a visa denial under INA section 221(g) mean?

A visa denial under section  221(g) of the INA  means that the consular officer did not have all of the information required to conclude you are eligible to receive a visa. This means you are not eligible for the visa now, for one of two reasons:

  • Your application is incomplete and/or further documentation is required -  Applicants whose application forms or other documentation are incomplete are refused. If further documents are required to complete your case, you will be informed what is needed and how to provide it to the embassy or consulate. You will also be given a letter stating your application has been denied under 221(g) and listing which documents you need to provide.
  • Administrative processing -  The consular officer could not conclude you were elegible for the visa sought and additional administrative processing of your application is required. You will be given a letter stating this; the embassy or consulate will contact you when the administrative processing is complete.

Is there something I can do about a refusal under section 221(g)?

If your application was denied because documentation or information is missing, you can provide the missing documents or information as soon as possible. After submitting the documentation, your visa application can then be re-assessed to determine whether you qualify for a visa. You have one year from the date you were refused a visa to submit the additional information. Otherwise, if you do not provide the required additional information within one year, you must reapply for the visa and pay another application fee.

If your application requires further administrative processing, this takes additional time after your interview. Processing times can vary based on individual circumstances. For more information, review  Administrative Processing .

INA Section 214(b) - Visa Qualifications and Immigrant Intent

What does a visa denial under INA section 214(b) mean?

This law applies only to nonimmigrant visa categories. If you are refused a visa under  section 214(b) , it means that you:

  • Did not sufficiently demonstrate to the consular officer that you qualify for the nonimmigrant visa category you applied for; and/or
  • Did not overcome the presumption of immigrant intent, required by law, by sufficiently demonstrating that you have strong ties to your home country that will compel you to leave the United States at the end of your temporary stay. (H-1B and L visa applicants, along with their spouse and any minor children, are excluded from this requirement.)

What are considered strong ties to my home country?

Ties are the various aspects of your life that bind you to your home country. Strong ties vary from country to country, city to city, and person to person, but examples include:

  • Your home; and/or
  • Your relationships with family and friends.

While conducting visa interviews, consular officers look at each application individually and consider the applicant's circumstances, travel plans, financial resources, and ties outside of the United States that will ensure the applicant’s departure after a temporary visit.

Is a refusal under section 214(b) permanent?

No. A refusal, or ineligibility, under section 214(b) is for that specific application, so once a case is closed, the consular section cannot take any further action. There is no appeal process. If you feel there is additional information that should be considered related to the visa decision, or there are significant changes in your circumstances since your last application, you may reapply for a visa. To reapply, you must complete a new application form, pay the application fee, and schedule an appointment for a new interview. Review the  website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate  where you plan to reapply to learn about any reapplication procedures.

INA Section 212(a)(4) - Public Charge

Why was I refused under INA section 212(a)(4)?  What is meant by “public charge”?

A visa refusal, or ineligibility, under section  212(a)(4) of the INA  means that the consular officer determined that you are likely to become a public charge in the United States.

Is a refusal under section 212(a)(4) permanent?

A refusal, or ineligibility, under section 212(a)(4) can be overcome in certain circumstances, as explained below.

Immigrants -  Most immigrant visa applicants are required to submit an Affidavit of Support from the U.S. sponsors who filed petitions for them. If your U.S. sponsor does not meet the requirements of the Affidavit of Support, you may present a second Affidavit of Support from a qualifying joint sponsor. Learn more about the  Affidavit of Support .

Some categories of immigrant visa applicants are not required to have Affidavits of Support. These are categories where no U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident relative filed a petition on your behalf, including most employment-based immigrants and diversity visa (DV) applicants.

If you are applying for an immigrant visa category where the Affidavit of Support Form is not required, the following are examples of how you could demonstrate to the consular officer that you will have financial support in the United States:

  • Your own personal funds;
  • A job offer in the United States; and/or
  • Sponsorship from a U.S. resident.

Examples of sponsorship from a U.S. resident include:

  • A letter from the U.S. resident stating financial support of you while in the United States;
  • Documents showing that the U.S. resident can financially support you, such as tax transcripts, bank statements or pay stubs; and/or
  • An Affidavit of Support (Form I-134).

The consular officer will review the additional evidence of financial support you submit to determine whether it is sufficient to overcome your ineligibility under section 212(a)(4).

Nonimmigrants -  You must demonstrate sufficient financial support during your temporary stay in the United States. Public charge denials are less frequent for nonimmigrant visa applications, but can occur, for example, in the case of a visa applicant seeking medical treatment in the United States without adequate funds to pay for treatment. Learn more about applying for a visitor visa for  medical treatment .

In order to overcome a denial for public charge reasons, you must demonstrate you will have sufficient financial support in the United States. The consular officer will review the additional evidence you submit to determine whether it is sufficient to overcome your ineligibility under section 212(a)(4).

INA Section 212(a)(6)(C)(i) - Fraud and Misrepresentation

What does a denial under INA section 212(a)(6)(C)(i) mean?

You were refused, or found ineligible, for a visa under  section 212(a)(6)(C)(i)  because you attempted to receive a visa or enter the United States by willfully misrepresenting a material fact or committing fraud. This is a permanent ineligibility, so every time you apply for a visa, you will be found ineligible for this reason.

You will be advised by the consular officer if you can apply for a waiver of this ineligibility. Review  Waivers of Ineligibility  for more information.

What is meant by misrepresentation of a material fact?

Misrepresentation means that you falsely presented facts and were not truthful in an attempt to receive a visa or enter the United States. A fact is considered material, as it pertains to this section of the INA, when, had the truth been known, you would not have been eligible to receive a visa or enter the United States.

INA Section 212(a)(9)(B)(i) - Unlawful Presence in the United States

What does a denial under INA section 212(a)(9)(B)(i) mean?

You were refused, or found ineligible for, a visa under  section 212(a)(9)(B)(i)  because you were considered to have been unlawfully present in the United States, if:

  • You stayed in the United States after the expiration date for the period of stay authorized by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for you, without the required authorization to extend your stay; or
  • You entered and were present in the United States without receiving the required authorization from CBP.

When denied a visa for unlawful presence, you are ineligible for a visa for the following length of time:

  • When unlawfully present in the United States for 180 days or longer but less than one year, you are ineligible for a visa for 3 years after departure from the United States; or
  • When unlawfully present in the United States for one year or longer, you are ineligible for a visa for 10 years after departure from the United States.

List of Ineligibilities

This webpage discusses some of the more common visa ineligibilities. For a complete list of visa ineligibilities and more information from the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), and amended laws, review  Ineligibilities and Waivers: Laws  on this site.

Waivers of Ineligibility

What is a waiver?

The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) contains provisions that may allow a visa applicant who was denied a visa for a particular ineligibility to apply for a waiver of that ineligibility. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) adjudicates all waivers of ineligibility. Waivers are discretionary, meaning that there are no guarantees that DHS will approve a waiver for you. If the waiver is approved, you may be issued a visa.

Can every applicant who is ineligible apply for a waiver?

No. If you are found ineligible for a visa, the consular officer will inform you if can apply for a waiver of ineligibility. The following factors will determine if you may apply for a waiver:

  • Whether a waiver of ineligibility is available for the particular section of law you are ineligible under;
  • You must be fully qualified for the visa you applied for, except for that specific ineligibility, in order to be able to apply for the waiver;
  • If you are applying for a nonimmigrant visa, generally whether the consular officer who found you ineligible recommends to DHS that you receive a waiver; and
  • If you are applying for an immigrant visa, whether a waiver is available for your particular situation. (For example, for certain visa ineligibilities when applying for an immigrant visa, you can only apply for a waiver if you have a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident spouse or parent who would endure extreme hardship if you were not able to immigrate.)

How do I apply for a waiver?

If you can apply for a waiver, the consular officer at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you applied will inform you how to apply.

Immigrant Visa and K Nonimmigrant Visa Applicants - If you can apply for a waiver, you must mail  Form I-601 , Application for Waiver of Grounds of Inadmissibility, directly to a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Lockbox facility, with few exceptions. Learn more on the  USCIS  website.

Spate of visa rejections have led MakeMyTrip to offer ticket cancellations if visa is rejected

A bout 10 months ago, a user took to social news website Reddit to complain about how online travel agency (OTA) MakeMyTrip had not refunded his money. He booked a honeymoon package to Greece with the OTA, paying ₹ 1.7 lakh initially last April, and later the full amount despite concerns about visa delays. After submitting the required documents, which were verified by the travel agency's visa team, he did not receive a visa in June. Although the airline and hotels agreed to partial refunds due to the refusal, the company stopped responding and ultimately refused to process his refund. Many users chimed in to discuss the same experiences they had as well and some got deterred by this experience and said they may not use the company to book their holiday plus visa package. This isn't the first time travellers have quarrelled with them and other travel agencies.

Following a spate of cancellations due to visa challenges and lack of availability, the online travel service provider has launched a new third-party insurance product for its travellers called “visa guarantee”, which ensures a full refund of the flight fare to the customer in case their tourist visa gets rejected by the embassy, the company’s co-founder and group CEO Rajesh Magow said.

In the company's recently announced Q4 results earlier this week, Magow said India is one of the top three fastest growing outbound tourism markets and is expected to become the fourth largest global spender on travel by 2030. With the country being a key source market and major tourism destination, foreign tourism boards have been trying to lure Indians with incentive campaigns, simplified visa requirements and new initiatives to attract more Indian outbound travellers.

Also read: Visa waivers, special deals: The global rush to woo the Indian traveller

However, tourist visa rejections remain a huge issue and that is probably why the company decided to introduce this feature. The add-on feature at an additional cost is a third party insurance product and the insurer offers a 100% refund if the traveller cancels 24 hours prior to departure. This includes regular tourist and e-visas but not visa on arrival. Of course, there has to be a formal rejection letter which needs to be presented. The option does not provide coverage for the inability to fly resulting from a delay in visa processing by the embassy or delays in the visa application process by the traveller.

Interestingly, there is no standard fee. It can range from anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand rupees to less popular locales in Europe to several thousands to regions like Australia. In general, while travel agencies are not responsible for any visa issues, the consumer complaints authority or Jago Grahak Jago by the ministry of consumer affairs and consumer courts come down hard on travel agencies when they do not provide these types of refunds.

The company said it generated revenue of $202.9 million in Q4 FY24, reflecting a 36.6% increase over $148.5 million in the corresponding quarter last year. The increase in revenue was primarily due to the sustained elevated travel demand in India for both domestic and international outbound travel in the Q4. Magow added that the company's international air ticketing business has also registered a strong growth of 33% year-on-year in this quarter. But while it continues to maintain its market share of over 30% in the domestic air ticketing business, during Q4, there was some reduction in overall departures possibly owing to the general elections and high airfares. For the entire year, its domestic ticketing business improved 5% year-on-year. The total number of domestic departures remained similar to Q3.

The company had mentioned in its last earnings call that the domestic supply situation will only gradually start improving and reiterated the same this quarter. It expects domestic departure supply only to improve in the second half of the current fiscal. "Go First has been grounded. So it seems like that despite all those issues that we see and hear (about engine issues, pilot and staff strikes), both IndiGo and Air India, and also SpiceJet have been able to get alternatives in place and have been able to replace some of their planes where there were engine issues earlier or the new planes coming in as part of their expansion plans. So  the potential of growth is higher. I'm not necessarily overly worried about the mid-term to long-term outlook on domestic air supply. Keeping aside the short term headwinds, the long term outlook for the Indian aviation sector is robust, driven by the expansion of aviation infrastructure, as well as record planes ordered by the Indian carriers," he added.

Also read: Airfares, hotel rates to remain high in the short term: Thomas Cook's Menon

On the hotels and homestays and packages front, the company saw a 41% year-on-year (y-o-y) growth in adjusted margin in constant currency terms. "Hospitality in India continues to be strong with most global and local hotel management chains and have set ambitious targets of signing more properties, especially in tier two and three cities. In the last couple of quarters, these chains have announced plans to add over 650 properties in India on a base of about 1,000 properties," he added. This will also increase its supply and now has 84,000 plus properties on its platform, MakeMyTrip said.

Overall, for the year, MakeMyTrip said it had an all-time high gross booking value of $8 billion and posted a record adjusted operating profit of $124 million compared to an adjusted operating profit of $70 million in FY23. Interestingly, its marketing and sales promotion expenses and customer inducement costs (or discounts) went up 12.5% for the entire year at $94,093 versus $83,618 it spent last fiscal. Overall, it generated a gross revenue of $782.5 million in the year, showing an increase of 32% over $593.0 million last year.

High visa wait times and rejection rates have led OTA MakeMyTrip to offer a paid service for refunds to anyone whose tourist visa could be rejected.

If you're picking someone up at DTW, you'd usually meet them at baggage claim or the curb, but that wasn't the case before 9/11 when almost anyone could walk up to the gate and see the planes up close. Keith McCree remembers those days.

"They'd print out the boarding pass just to get you to the gate, the family boarding pass, and allow them to sit with you while you wait. And if the plane was delayed, they'd be there. And if the plane got canceled, they could actually take you back home. So that was an advantage," McCree said.

In 2019, the Wayne County Airport Authority found a way to restore some of that lost convenience and comfort.

"And what people had to do is submit their name, date of birth, and a lot of personal information 24 hours before their visit," Randy Wimbley, spokesperson for the Wayne County Airport Authority, said.

But the COVID-19 pandemic paused the program and then came the Destination Pass kiosks.

All visitors have to do is scan their driver's license or passport, and they receive a pass instantly, allowing them to go through the TSA checkpoint.

"I think it's very sufficient; I think it's very convenient, and I don't see anything wrong with it. I like it," Sierra Brown, a traveler, said.

Those under 18 must be with an adult.

"It really allows people to experience all that DTW has to offer again: more than 100 shops and restaurants, and local breweries like Atwater and Jolly Pumpkin. We've got Chick-fil-A and all of your franchises that everyone is familiar with. We have more concessions coming in with our concessionaires program," Wimbley said.

The passes are gaining popularity; since October 2023, the kiosks have printed about 27,000.

"More people are using the program with the kiosks, and they're not having any issues, you know, with parking or what have you. And so that's not at all a deterrent," Wimbley said.

The Destination Pass kiosks at the Evans and McNamara terminals and the Westin Hotel next to McNamara are up and running seven days a week from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Real ID deadline is rapidly approaching, what to know about the new flight requirement

my travel pass rejected

The really real deadline to make your state-issued identified card, or driver’s license Real ID compliant will be here before you know it.

And you won’t be fly domestically after 2025 without it. The government has been trying to make Real IDs a thing for a while, initially passing The Real ID act in 2005 in an attempt to set “minimum security standards” for state-issued identification documents.

The law was set to take effect in 2020 but was pushed back by the Department of Homeland Security over “backlogged transactions” at MVD offices nationwide as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to USA TODAY reporting .

The May 2025 extension was necessary, DHS says, as state driver’s licensing agencies worked to address the mountains of paperwork, which in turn impacted the MVD’s ability to make any real progress on the Real ID rollout.

“Following the enforcement deadline, federal agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration, will be prohibited from accepting driver’s licenses and identification cards that do not meet these federal standards,” DHS said in 2022.

That means every every traveler, 18 or older, must have a compliant form of identification in order to travel.

Here’s what to know.

When does Real ID go into effect?

The Real ID “full enforcement date” is Wednesday, May 7, 2025, according to DHS.

When will a Real ID be required to fly?

You or your loved ones need to have a Real ID compliant document, driver’s license or identification card, by May 7, 2025.

If you have another form of identification that is TSA-approved, like an up to date passport or a permanent resident card then you probably don’t need a Real ID compliant document.

Here are a couple TSA-approved alternatives, if you’re on the fence about getting a Real ID.

  • State issued enhanced driver’s license
  •  DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
  • Border crossing card
  • An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe
  •  HSPD-12 PIV card
  • Foreign government-issued passport
  •  Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
  • Transportation worker identification credential
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
  •  Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)

How long does it take to get a Real ID?

It will take about two weeks , or 15 business days to get your Real ID or Enhanced Driver’s License from your state's Motor Vehicle Department.

Enhanced driver’s licenses, which are only issued in a couple of states, including Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Vermont, are considered acceptable alternatives to REAL ID-compliant cards, DHS says.

How do I know if I have a Real ID?

All Real IDs will have a stamp on the right hand corner to show that the identification document meets federal standards set forth by The Real ID Act of 2005.

The symbol stamped on your Real ID card will vary, depending on which state you obtain your new identification card from.

What does a Real ID look like?

Your Real ID will have most, if not all of the information that’s included on your driver’s license.

The only difference is the seal included in the right-hand corner.

Is travel insurance refundable here’s everything you need to know.

Sometimes, travel insurance is refundable. Here's when you can get your money back.

Peter Hoagland always checks to see if his travel insurance is refundable. That's because anything can happen between the time you book your vacation and when you leave — and because travel insurance isn't always refundable.

During the pandemic, he discovered that the hard way. He had to cancel a trip and asked for his money back from the insurance company. It refused.

"Since then, I always read the fine print on the policy," he says.

The refundability of travel insurance has always been an open question. Some countries and U.S. states regulate refundability. Travel insurance companies put refundability details in the fine print of the policy. And, as Hoagland found out, there are always exceptions.

Like the pandemic, when refund policies were all over the map. Some insurance companies adhered to their published policies. Others offered a credit that could be reused within a year, which was minimally useful because the pandemic was still happening a year later. Others quietly gave their customers a refund.

Hoagland says he fought for his money. Eventually, he contacted a manager at his travel insurance company.

"That produced a quick result," he says. "I got my money back."

But let's face it: Getting a refund for travel insurance can be difficult. There are times when insurance is always refundable because it's required by law. There are times when it's sometimes refundable. And there are times when it's almost never refundable. But even then, there may be a way to recover some — or all — of the value of your policy.

Getting a refund for travel insurance can be a challenge

If you have a travel insurance policy and would like to get a refund, it might be easier said than done, say experts.

"While travel insurance is regulated like auto and home insurance, it’s often less standardized," says Stuart Winchester, CEO of Marble, a digital wallet for your insurance. "So first off, it’s important to check the fine print of your specific policy. Don’t assume it’s like the last one you got."

Even when you have something in writing, a refund can require some serious negotiating skills.

"Getting a refund for travel insurance can be complicated and frustrating," says Peter Hamdy, the managing director of a tour operator in Auckland, New Zealand. He's asked for a refund on policies numerous times and says that despite what travel insurance companies may tell you, there are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to getting a refund on your policy.

"Some situations can warrant a refund," he says. "It depends on your policy."

What does a typical refundability clause look like? For example, the World Explorer Guardian from Insured Nomads notes that it's refundable only during the 10-day review period from the date of delivery or 15 days from the date of delivery if mailed, provided you have not already departed on your trip and you have not incurred any claimable losses during that time. If you depart on your trip before the expiration of the review period, the review period ends and the policy can't be refunded.

"We go a bit further with our World Explorer Travel Medical plans," notes Andrew Jernigan, CEO of Insured Nomads. "If no claims have been filed then we can refund the unused portion of the policy if you cut your trip short.”

When can you get a refund for travel insurance?

Here are the most common cases where travel insurance can be refunded:

  • If you cancel during the "free look" period required by the government. Most states require what's called a "free look" period of anywhere from 10 to 14 days. "During this period, travelers can review the purchase and make sure it fits their needs," explains James Nuttall, general manager of Insubuy . "If it does not, they can cancel it for any reason and get a full refund, no questions asked, so long as you haven’t departed yet.
  • If you cancel during the travel insurance company grace period. Many insurance companies also have a grace period for refunds (usually, they are the same as the "free look" although some grace periods can be longer). "If you’re outside your grace period, which typically lasts one to two weeks after signing, you’re contractually obliged to pay your premiums," says David Ciccarelli, CEO of the vacation rental site Lake . "Still, it doesn’t hurt to ask your company for a refund or alternative options if you’re outside your grace window. You might not get a yes, but it could lead to some cost savings or better solutions."
  • When someone else cancels your trip. "For instance, if your cruise is canceled due to low river tide, you are not at fault and would typically receive a full refund or credit for a future sailing, thus eliminating the need for the travel insurance policy," explains Rhonda Abedsalam vice president of travel insurance for AXA Assistance US.
  • If you die. Typically, the policy would be refunded to your next of kin. Generally, you can also ask for a refund if your travel companion dies before your trip.

Remember, it depends on where you buy your insurance

The refundability of your insurance can depend on where you purchased it. Commercial policies bought from a cruise or tour company are generally canceled and refunded if you cancel the trip far enough in advance of your departure date.

"The travel insurance cancellation provisions are generally tied to the cancellation provisions for the cruise or tour," explains Dan Skilken, president of TripInsurance.com . "After you have paid the last deposits on the cruise and are close enough to departure that they will not provide a refund on the cruise, they generally will also not provide a refund on the travel insurance. But if you cancel early enough to get all or most of your deposit back, you will also get your travel insurance premium refunded."

If you’ve purchased retail travel insurance from a third-party provider or comparison website, you can often get a refund if you can show receipts proving that you received a full refund of all trip deposits and have not had any cancellation penalties or taken any travel credits when you canceled your trip.

That's because retail travel insurance is sold for a specific traveler and for a specific trip. If you have proof of a complete refund and have not received travel credits, then you no longer have what's called an "insurable interest" in the trip. The insurance company must cancel and refund your premium in full, says Skilken.

Insider tip: If the insurance company refuses, just tell them you have proof that you no longer have an insurable interest in the trip. You have to have an insurable interest in a trip to own a travel insurance policy.

Your agent may be able to help you get a refund

You may also be able to lean on the agent who sold you the policy. For example, all policies on Squaremouth come with a money-back guarantee.

"The purpose of this benefit is to give travelers extra time to review their policy documentation to be sure it’s the best policy for their coverage needs," says spokeswoman Jenna Hummer. At Squaremouth, the money-back period typically lasts between 10 and 14 days, which is in line with the mandated "free look" period.

However, I have also seen agents negotiate with travel insurance companies for a more generous refund period in case of extenuating circumstances. There's no guarantee that you'll get it, but it's worth asking — and one reason to work with a third party.

Agents can also help you avoid this problem. Susan Sherren, who runs Couture Trips , a travel agency, notes that American Airlines Vacation Packages offers a predeparture protection insurance plan, which allows cancellation for any reason before the outbound departing flight time. Other restrictions apply, she adds.

"More flexibility will often cost you more," she says. "But having the flexibility is a great way to sleep well at night."

Can't get a refund? Look for other kinds of flexibility from your travel insurance company

Even if your travel insurance company says no to a refund, it doesn't necessarily mean you've lost the value of your policy.

"If a travel supplier changes or cancels your trip, you should be able to change your travel insurance policy to match the new dates of your trip or even cover a new trip, sometimes up to two years into the future," says Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA .

Pro tip: Be sure to change the dates of your travel insurance policy before the departure date of your current itinerary. You can do that online or by calling your agent. Once the policy's effective date has passed, making any changes or initiating a refund or credit becomes much more difficult.

Don't forget to do your due diligence

Bottom line: Travel insurance is refundable under certain circumstances. But knowing when can require research.

"It's important for consumers to carefully read their policy upon receipt to understand the specific terms offered by their insurance provider," says Robert Gallagher, president of the US Travel Insurance Association.

The more you know, the likelier you are to get the refund you want when your plans change.
