The 11 Best Cruises In And Around The U.S.

  • Cruises and Sailing

  • United States

Taking a cruise is an excellent way to explore the country and world without the hassle of constantly packing and unpacking. The U.S. offers a variety of cruises, both on the ocean and river, that cater to different interests, ranging from exploring the wonders of Alaska to savoring the Pacific wine country.

With so many options, finding a cruise that fits your itinerary and budget is easy. In this post, I will share the 11 best cruises in and around the U.S. for seeing the wonders of our country and having an unforgettable vacation. Here they are, in no apparent order.

Shopping street in Bangor, Maine

1. New England/Canada

Holland America offers several New England and Canada cruise options, including a 10-day getaway from Quebec City to Fort Lauderdale or a 6-to-8-day journey from Boston to the culturally rich Montreal or Quebec City. The latter option includes stops in Bar Harbor, Maine; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Sydney, Nova Scotia; and back.

If you prefer a more extended cruise with more days at sea, Holland America has a 10-day itinerary from Quebec City to Fort Lauderdale with stops in Port Canaveral, Florida, and Portland instead of Bar Harbor, Maine.

Highlights Of New England/Canada

These Holland America cruises are ideal for those seeking fall foliage, sandy beaches, fresh seafood, the iconic Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse, the Anne of Green Gables house and farm, and the East’s most famous attraction — Acadia National Park. I found the 8-mile Confederation Bridge on Prince Edward Island truly fascinating. It stands over the Northumberland Strait and costs $50.25 to cross.

Fun Fact: Confederation Bridge is the longest bridge in the world over icy waters .

Alcatraz Island

2. California Coastal And Wine Country

Princess Cruises offers several itineraries, with my favorites being California Coastal or the Pacific Wine Country and Coastal, with stops in San Francisco and Santa Barbara , ending in Vancouver, Canada. The 7-day itinerary, which currently runs less than $500 for an inside cabin, is particularly popular. It has been named “Best Cruises from the West Coast” by Cruise Critic.

The California Coastal departs Los Angeles and stops in San Francisco; Astoria , Oregon; and Seattle, and ends in Vancouver. Princess Cruises offers a variety of onboard amenities, such as culinary experiences, the best afternoon tea at sea, and Broadway-style entertainment.

FYI: I’ve been on 54 cruises and this is one of the two I couldn’t get into a port due to the weather. In this case, it was Santa Barbara and because of the fog. Don’t be discouraged when these things happen; the cruise line’s #1 priority is keeping you safe, so you have to roll with the punches.

Glacier National Park

Carnival Cruises takes you on a 10- or 11-day journey to wondrous Alaska, departing from Seattle or San Francisco. Expect breathtaking views of natural wonders such as glaciers, fjords, and Alaska wildlife, namely bears, moose, and whales.

This Alaska itinerary boasts stops in Juneau and Ketchikan where you can explore charming towns and embark on exciting excursions. Carnival Cruises emphasizes fun and entertainment and is one of the many cruise lines that sail to Alaska .

4. American Rivers (Multiple)

Viking River Cruises offers an exciting journey from Minnesota’s Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico along the Mighty Mississippi River. Three options for the American rivers that I found intriguing were Heart of the Delta (New Orleans to Memphis ), America’s Heartland (St. Louis to St. Paul), and America’s Great River (St. Paul to New Orleans). The journeys take you through iconic landmarks and scenic spots, including the St. Louis Arch, Mark Twain’s boyhood home, and Civil War battlefields.

Viking River Cruises is ideal for those interested in history, culture, and scenic landscapes, with onboard activities such as lectures, workshops, and demonstrations. All guided tours are included.

5. Columbia And Snake Rivers

The Columbia and Snake Rivers cruise with American Queen Voyages is a must-do for anyone interested in American history. This cruise follows the path that Lewis and Clark once charted through dense forests, rocky shorelines, and rich wine country.

Departing from Richland, Washington, or Portland, Oregon, this cruise is a bit pricey but well worth the investment for its educational enrichment and natural beauty. Learn about the Native American history of the area, take in breathtaking views of the Columbia River Gorge , and indulge in delicious regional cuisine.

Graceland living room

6. Cumberland And Tennessee Rivers

Immerse yourself in the charm of small-town America and the Great Smoky Mountains on a cruise down the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers with American Queen Voyages. With all guided tours, Wi-Fi, beverages (including alcohol), and a one-night pre-cruise hotel stay included, this trip offers the ultimate vacation.

Learn how to get a National Parks senior pass before you go.

Highlights Of The Cumberland And Tennessee Rivers

Expect moonshine, Civil War historical sites, country music, Nashville traditions, and the birthplace of the blues — Memphis. While in Memphis, visiting the one and only home of Elvis Presley at Graceland is a must! I’m most intrigued by seeing Paducah, also known as Quilt City and a UNESCO World Heritage Creative City .

Presidential car at the Henry Ford Museum

7. Great Lakes

A third cruising option with American Queen Voyages uncovers the grandeur and natural beauty of the Great Lakes (which meet eight states and the Canadian province of Ontario), from Chicago to Niagara Falls. Watch the mesmerizing cascade of Niagara Falls, take a horse-drawn carriage through Mackinac Island, and soak in the fragrant pine forests of the Georgian Bay.

With carefully selected destinations and daily educational enrichment, this cruise offers a remarkable way to discover America’s northernmost wonders.

Highlights Of The Great Lakes

Having been to Michigan’s Mackinac Island, this is truly one of the treats on this itinerary. Other highlights include:

  • Chicago’s photogenic architecture
  • Magnificent Mile shopping
  • Milwaukee’s craft beer scene
  • The Henry Ford Museum
  • Traveling through the locks system

8. National Parks And Legendary Rivers

For adventure lovers and nature enthusiasts, the National Parks & Legendary Rivers cruise with American Cruise Lines is a natural fit. This 15-day, 14-night cruise on land and sea takes you through some of America’s most iconic national parks: Glacier, Grand Teton , and Yellowstone . Included are guided excursions with an adventure guide, three daily meals, and breathtaking views of the Columbia River Gorge and Snake River, all while enjoying comfortable accommodations and hotels.

This cruise is perfect for those seeking an educational experience or mature adults seeking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. This might be my future dream cruise itinerary.

Riverboat in Natchez, Mississippi

9. Mississippi River

A list of the best cruises in the U.S. would only be complete with mentioning a classic Mississippi River cruise. This iconic American river flows through a stunning variety of landscapes, from rich forests to revered southern cities and towns. Enjoy live music, thrilling riverboat casinos, and impeccable southern cuisine on a cruise with American Queen Steamboat Company while taking in the beauty and history of the Mississippi River.

Potential city port visits among these Mississippi River cruise options include Natchez, Mississippi; Cincinnati; Madison, Indiana; Hannibal, Missouri; Dubuque, Iowa; Baton Rouge; and Memphis.

10. San Juan Islands And Puget Sound

A rare and delicious cruise itinerary I found while researching this post is yet another with American Cruise Lines . Have you ever considered cruising in Washington? I know I hadn’t. This enchanting 8-day cruise takes you through the San Juan Islands, with abundant wildlife and natural scenery, to the Puget Sound and Butchart Gardens in Victoria, Canada.

11. Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park is another unique cruise with American Cruise Lines that will allow you to witness breathtaking vistas. A few ports of call on this itinerary, or the Olympic National Park one, are lesser-known towns like Port Townsend and Anacortes.

The best cruises from the U.S. for every type of traveler

Looking to relax? Into adventure? Bringing the kids? We've found the perfect cruise for you.

Lauren Dana

Cruises have become increasingly popular in recent years, with over 35 million passengers slated to set sail in 2024 alone: and it’s easy to see why. Not only do cruises make for a convenient vacation option—you just need to unpack once, and you’ll never have to travel too far from your stateroom (if at all) for your next meal or drink—but they also offer plenty of onboard activities and amenities to appease all types of travelers. Plus, cruises are available across various price points and lengths. Whether you prefer oceans or lakes, islands or cities, spotting wildlife or sitting on the beach (no wrong answers!), I’ve used my experience both as a cruiser and travel writer—I’ve covered the industry for nearly five years—to narrow down the best cruises from the U.S. to suit all individuals, regardless of travel style and personal preferences.

An email you’ll actually love

Best cruises for every type of traveler

Best for wildlife spotting: Holland America’s Alaskan Explorer

1.  Best for wildlife spotting: Holland America’s Alaskan Explorer

It’s no secret that Alaska is home to some of the country’s best wildlife spotting opps, which is why I was psyched to embark on Holland America’s epic Alaskan Explorer sailing in August 2022. Both on and off the ship, I had the chance to spot many a whale—along with puffins, otters and other adorable and astonishing creatures that call the Last Frontier home. (If you’re lucky, you may even spot a bear or two!). Sailing roundtrip from Seattle, this bucket-list itinerary includes scenic cruising through the Puget Sound and Glacier Bay, along with stops in Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Sitka, Ketchikan, and last but not least, Victoria, British Columbia.

Best for island lovers: Norwegian Cruise Line’s Hawaii Inter-Island

2.  Best for island lovers: Norwegian Cruise Line’s Hawaii Inter-Island

With its varied landscapes—ranging from majestic mountains and volcanoes to stunning beaches to lush tropical rainforests—a trip to Hawaii offers something for everyone. While you can island-hop around the Aloha State via ferry or plane, it’s not exactly seamless. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Hawaii Inter-Island , which sails year-round from Oahu to Kauai, takes the stress out of planning a multi-island Hawaiian vacation. Cruisers will have the incredible opportunity to visit four Hawaiian islands—Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai— without having to schlep their luggage, unpack or worry about booking inter-island flights or ferries. Overnights in Maui and Kauai are also included in the itinerary, allowing travelers to immerse themselves and uncover the beauty of each locale.

Best for bachelorettes: Margaritaville at Sea’s Bahamas

3.  Best for bachelorettes: Margaritaville at Sea’s Bahamas

For a sun- and fun-filled bachelorette party weekend, consider one of Margaritaville at Sea ’s two- or three-night Bahamas sailings, which make for the perfect party-centric weekend escape. On board, your group can sip tropical-inspired cocktails (Mai Tais, anyone?) at one of several bars and lounges while listening to Jimmy Buffett tunes, get pampered at the spa, play a round of pickleball, and so much more. It’s worth noting that the line currently only has one ship, Margaritaville at Sea Paradise, which sails out of Palm Beach; however, the line’s second ship, Margaritaville at Sea Islander, which will debut in June 2024, will sail from Tampa. Bonus: The line offers special bachelorette and girls getaway packages, which include access to the best available fares, group discounts, and even a dedicated concierge to take the hassle out of trip planning.

Best for families with young kids: Disney Cruise Line’s Bahamian Cruise

4.  Best for families with young kids: Disney Cruise Line’s Bahamian Cruise

Character meet-and-greets, drinking and dining venues, obstacle courses, and top-notch performances: Find all this and more aboard Disney Wish , which made its grand debut in 2022. The ship’s three-night Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral (Orlando) visits Disney’s idyllic private island, Castaway Cay, known for its white-sand beaches and stunningly clear turquoise waters—and, if you’re lucky, you may even spot beloved Disney characters!

The onboard experience is just as spectacular: Little ones can live out their Disney dreams at the “Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure” culinary experiences, while more casual—albeit just as fun—eateries include Mickey’s Smokestack Barbecue, Donald’s Cantina, Daisy’s Pizza Pies, Goofy’s Grill and Sweet Minnie’s Ice Cream. The kids' programming is, as you can imagine, equally top-notch: Children can train alongside superheroes, battle it out with Marvel villains, embark on an epic interactive Star Wars adventure, and live out their dreams as a Walt Disney Imagineer, go crafting in Rapunzel’s Art Studio, and (so much) more.

Best for families of all ages: Royal Caribbean's Weekend Caribbean

5.  Best for families of all ages: Royal Caribbean's Weekend Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is best known for its show-stopping onboard entertainment offerings (think: 10-story dry slides, dueling waterslides, ziplining, carousels, surfing and skydiving simulators and escape rooms) and a seemingly endless amount of bars and restaurants. As such, this mega-ship line is ideal for families of all ages—picky eaters included!

While the kids are at play, grown-ups can bask in the sun from the adults-only Solarium, where I spent most of my time on board my Caribbean cruise. Royal Caribbean offers several weekend Caribbean itineraries that cruise roundtrip from major cities like Miami, Galveston, Los Angeles and Orlando (Port Canaveral); however, I recommend opting for one that includes a port of call in CocoCay, the cruise line’s private island paradise in the Bahamas that boasts its own waterpark along with thrill-seeking activities like ziplining and helium balloon ride.

Best for beach lovers: MSC Cruises’ Bermuda

6.  Best for beach lovers: MSC Cruises’ Bermuda

Bermuda is best known for its beautiful pink-hued stretches of sand, which pop perfectly against the clear blue waters. With that in mind, the idyllic isle is ideal for beach lovers. The best way to get there and experience the dynamic island? By booking MSC Cruises ’ six- or seven-night Bermuda itineraries. Passengers will sail aboard the massive MSC MeraViglia, which conveniently cruises to and from Brooklyn. The dazzling ship is complete with a two-deck promenade, oceanview lounge areas, an amusement area and an outdoor water park.

Best luxury: Crystal Cruises' Miami to San Diego

7.  Best luxury: Crystal Cruises' Miami to San Diego

The luxury line Crystal was recently relaunched this past summer following a multimillion-dollar refurbishment across two ships, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony. Its 16-night Miami to San Diego itinerary stops in Georgetown, Grand Cayman; Cartagena, Colombia; Colon, Panama (where it’ll cross the world-famous Panama Canal); Quepos, Costa Rica; and Alcapoco and Cabo in Mexico. On board, guests can enjoy gourmet drinking and dining options—including the first and only Nobu restaurant at sea (I had the chance to preview the cuisine this summer and was blown away by the sushi, sashimi and, of course, the chef’s signature miso black cod)—along with personal butler service and contemporary oceanview staterooms and suites. Wellness seekers will especially enjoy the Aurora Spa, where services run the gamut from acupuncture and IV treatments to salt scrubs and hot stone massages.

Best budget: Carnival’s Baja Mexico

8.  Best budget: Carnival’s Baja Mexico

Carnival’s motto is “Choose Fun,” and that’s precisely what you’ll find on any of its 26 ships cruising the world. The wallet-friendly cruise line is a favorite among budget-conscious travelers craving a fun vacation that won’t necessarily break the bank. The line’s f our-day Mexico itinerary aboard Radiance of the Seas, which cruises roundtrip from Los Angeles and stops in Catalina Island and Ensenada, packs plenty of added value. The standard cruise fare (from $234 per person) includes access to over ten restaurants—plus ample bars and lounges—and dozens of entertainment offerings (think: deck parties, game shows, trivia contests, outdoor sports activities, pools and hot tubs, karaoke, musical performances, stand-up comedy and more). So, what’re you waiting for?

Best all-inclusive: Viking Expedition Cruises’ Great Lakes Collection

9.  Best all-inclusive: Viking Expedition Cruises’ Great Lakes Collection

Viking is known for its adults-only, all-inclusive river, ocean and expedition cruises. As you can guess by its name, the 15-day Great Lakes Collection sailing—which cruises from Toronto, Canada to Duluth, Minnesota—takes adventure-seeking cruisers on an epic journey around all five majestic Great Lakes. Travelers will sail aboard the sleek Scandanivian-inspired Viking Octantis, which features all-balcony staterooms, cruising the Welland Canal, Niagara Falls, Cleveland, Michigan (Detroit, Alpena, Mackinac Island), Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, and a handful of Ontario hotspots (Georgian Bay, Silver Inlet, Thunder Bay).

While fares are pricy (from $13,995 per person), they are all-inclusive, folding in one shore excursion in each port of call, Wi-Fi, beverages (bottled water, beer, wine and soft drinks), taxes and fees, spa access, 24-hour room service and more.

Best adults-only: Virgin Voyages’ Fire & Sunset Soiree

10.  Best adults-only: Virgin Voyages’ Fire & Sunset Soiree

Richard Branson’s Virgin Voyages is one of the newest—and most innovative—cruise lines out there. The adults-only line has done away with buffets, instead offering 20-plus fun, free and flavorful food concepts (think: Korean BBQ at Gunbae, tacos and tequila at the ‘gram-worthy Pink Agave and ice cream at the cheekily named Lick Me Till… Ice Cream). With all this in mind, it’s no surprise that the line is a favorite amongst foodies. The party-centric onboard experience comprises nightclubs, tattoo parlors and risque entertainment (cabaret performances, acrobatics shows, DJs and the like). Also, do yourself a favor and upgrade to a suite to enjoy exclusive access to Richard’s Rooftop, a swanky members-only outdoor space for partying and sipping cocktails in style.

While you can’t go wrong with any of the itineraries, I’m especially partial to the four-night Fire & Sunset Soiree sailing, which sails roundtrip from Miami and calls on Key West and Bimini, where the line has its own buzzy beach club.

How to book a sailing through United Cruises

Ashley Kosciolek

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Getting frequent flyer miles for a cruise? It might sound weird, but it's a thing. If you're a points and miles aficionado, cruising is another way you can rack up miles. And if you're a cruise nut but haven't yet ventured into the world of points and miles, there's no better time than now to capitalize on one of your favorite ways to travel.

For an upcoming sailing, I reserved a cabin via United Cruises — a booking channel that allowed me to earn MileagePlus points for my voyage while saving a bit of money on my cabin.

Here, I'll explain the ins and outs of booking through United Cruises to earn (or burn) points on your next cruise vacation.

Why I chose United Cruises

I'm new to the points and miles game. Due to 2021's cruise industry restart, I found myself sailing quite a bit — and flying United to get there — which meant I achieved airline status for the first time ever and earned a ton of miles. Now I'm hooked on earning and have been making sure to rake in miles whenever I can. That's where United Cruises comes in.

I chose United Cruises because United is my airline of choice, I have status within the MileagePlus program, and the opportunity to earn extra miles was enticing.

I should also add that I recently became a proud cardholder of The Platinum Card® from American Express, which has a Cruise Privileges Program that allows cardholders to earn points and offers discounts and onboard credit with certain cruise lines. I originally planned to book through Amex, but I discovered the portal didn't have as much inventory as United Cruises' did. Plus, I wouldn't have earned miles, and I would only have been eligible for the full $300 onboard credit offered by Amex if I had booked a suite — something that wasn't in the budget.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

How you'll earn miles

The first step to earning miles through a United Cruises booking is to make sure that you're a MileagePlus member. (If you aren't already enrolled, you can sign up at united.com.)

Before booking your cruise through the United Cruises portal, sign in using the link at the top right of the screen. If you're booking over the phone, your agent should ask for your MileagePlus number, so have it readily available. This will make sure any miles earned are credited to your MileagePlus account.

Even when no promotions are in place, United MileagePlus members will receive miles based on cabin type, with 2 miles per dollar spent awarded for inside and ocean view cabins, and 4 miles per dollar given for balconies and suites. (Miles are awarded on the amount of the base fare only; they won't be accrued for taxes or additional purchases, such as Wi-Fi or drink packages.)

If you're a United MileagePlus Visa cardholder, you can earn up to 2 additional miles per dollar spent on travel purchases — including cruises — depending on the type of card you have. United Cruises also frequently runs offers that allow you to earn additional miles for cruise bookings. I've seen promotions offering as many as 10 miles per dollar spent, up to 60,000 miles, for balcony and suite accommodations booked with a MileagePlus credit card via United Cruises.

Miles will post to your account anywhere from six to eight weeks after sailing. Note that, if you book multiple cabins, you will only earn miles for the one in which you're staying. Miles for the other cabins will be awarded to passengers whose names are attached to those rooms. Miles earned through United Cruises also do not count toward elite status with the airline unless you book using one of United's fee-based credit cards.

Another important caveat is that you'll incur a $25 fee per booking for any reservations made through the United Cruises portal or handled by an agent over the phone — something that wasn't disclosed to me when I called. (I noticed the charge on my bill after the fact, but it is spelled out on the check-out page for online bookings.)

For my balcony cabin booking, which cost $2,146, I'll be earning 4 miles per dollar — a total of 8,584 miles. I also qualified for a special promotion that earned me 10,000 additional miles for booking a balcony room. Based on TPG's valuations at the time of publication, those 18,584 miles are worth about $206. That means I still come out ahead, even after the $25 fee.

Other reasons to book through United Cruises

cruises ua

If you've already got a ton of United miles burning a hole in your pocket, you can redeem them for the purchase of a cruise. If you have enough, you can cover the entire cost with miles, or you can use a combination of miles and cash. However, use caution when redeeming airline miles for a cruise.

"In general, cruises are a better way to earn airline miles than to redeem airline miles," says Katie Genter, a TPG senior writer. "So, it's typically best to redeem airline miles for flights, not cruises. But, you may occasionally get good value when redeeming miles to book an airline vacation package that includes a cruise.

"It's best to compare the cost in miles to a comparable paid rate to calculate your redemption rate. Then, compare that redemption rate to TPG's valuation of the airline miles. If you're getting a significantly lower redemption rate than TPG's valuation, it's typically best to avoid that redemption.

"Of course, there are exceptions. For example, you may have more miles than you can use for flights. Or, you may be short on cash and need to redeem miles to take a well-needed vacation."

A United representative told me that an exchange rate is applied to the dollar price of the cruise to get the mileage price. That means the mileage price for each cabin type can vary across cruise ships and sail dates.

In addition to earning and burning miles, you can take advantage of discounts and perks like reduced or waived deposits, onboard credit and free bottles of wine, offered by some cruise lines. Plus, World Travel Holdings -- the agency that backs United's cruise bookings -- offers a 110% guarantee that you won't find a better deal elsewhere at the time of booking, and you'll have access to 24/7 support if anything goes wrong during your sailing. (That's what the $25-per-booking fee is for.)

How to find and book a cruise through United Cruises

There are two ways to book a cruise via United Cruises. You can call an agent by dialing 800-211-2039, or you can make the booking on your own using the online portal.

After navigating to the United Cruises website , use the "Cruise Search" box to narrow down your choices by where you'd like to go, when, for how long and with which cruise line and ship.

Once the search results appear, browse the listings, noting any deals that look promising. To learn more about a sailing, click the "View Itinerary" button next to it. On the next page, in addition to the itinerary, you'll be able to review information about the ship, including dining and entertainment options.

If you've decided you'd like to go ahead with the booking, scroll down on the page, find the sailing date (noted in the far-left column) that best fits your schedule, and click the "Select" button for that row.

Next, you'll be taken through the site's five-step reservation process.

Guest options

In this section, you'll indicate how many people are in your party and enter your mailing zip code to see if you qualify for any local promotions. You can indicate if you're a repeat cruiser or if anyone in your party qualifies for a senior citizen discount. The form will also ask if you'd like to sign up for emails or use future cruise credits from your cruise line to pay for all or part of your voyage.

cruises ua

In step two, you'll choose the type of cabin you'd like. On this page, you'll find information about what each room style provides, along with introductory pricing for the least expensive cabin in each category. When you find the room type for you, click the "Select" button under the price. Before choosing, take care to read the fine print, as some cabins have quirks (balconies with obstructed views, for example).

Select room

cruises ua

Here, you'll select the exact cabin you want. Use the provided deck plan to see which cabin locations are available, and click the "Select" button next to the room number you've chosen.

Guest details

cruises ua

In this step, enter the name, birth date, country of residence, gender and contact information for yourself and each member of your travel party. This is also the section where you'll select your dining preferences — pick a fixed dining time or choose flexible dining, where applicable.

Complete booking

cruises ua

On the final tab, you'll be shown a summary of the cruise you're booking, along with a final price, broken down by base fare and port charges, and taxes and fees. You'll be asked if you'd like to purchase travel protection for your sailing. (I advise purchasing a third-party travel insurance plan for your cruise instead.) On the final page, you'll be asked to enter your payment information, billing address and select whether you'd like to pay a deposit or the entire amount due.

After your booking is completed, you'll be taken to a confirmation page, and a receipt will be sent to the email address you entered when making the purchase.

Is it worth it?

The platform is mostly straightforward. It can get confusing when you're trying to find a specific room type or cabin number (such as accessible cabins or ones near the elevators), or if you're trying to avoid a specific type of accommodation or location on the ship (such as rooms near the noisy kids club or directly under the pool deck). I ended up calling the customer service number to have an agent book for me over the phone.

cruises ua

Even if you're not a MileagePlus member, you can still book through United Cruises. You'll receive whichever non-miles-related deals and promotions are available at the time, along with the support of a dedicated cruise agent if you need help at any stage of booking or travel.

However, Summer Hull, TPG's director of content, advises that 2 miles per dollar generally isn't a great return. So, although United Cruises is one way to price sailings, you'll want to check other avenues to make sure you're getting the best value — especially if you're booking an inside or ocean view cabin. Absent a sizeable mileage bonus of some sort, it might not be worth it, and you could be better off booking through a travel agent who doesn't charge a fee and who can snag you some extras like onboard credit.

Odessa cruise port

Region Mediterranean - Black Sea

Local Time 2024-04-08 02:00

Odessa is Ukraine's 3rd most populous city (following Kiev, Kharkov, and Dnipro) and among the largest Black Sea ports. The cruise port is located on a small harbor.

After 2014, due to Eastern Europe's instability, most cruise brands removed Black Sea from their cruise itinerary programs. Port Odessa's cruising season is February through December. In 2017, the number of cruise ship visits to Odessa increased to 13 (bringing around 13700 passengers), compared to 2016's 5 ship calls and 1137 passengers. The most popular city tour is a half-day sightseeing excursion starting from Prymorsky Blvd.

In 2019, the port had booked Voyages to Antiquity's ship Aegean Odyssey . In 2020, Azamara Cruises booked 2 calls during 14-day "Black Sea Voyage" itineraries on the ship Azamara Journey . However, most port visits are by (USSR-made) Russian riverboats , and mainly by Viking Cruises ship Viking Sineus . The majority of river cruise passengers are from Western Europe and North America.

Port Odessa

Port Odessa (locode UAODS) is Ukraine's largest seaport and one of the largest Black Sea ports. The port is directly connected to the country's railway system. The port has 2 satellite ports - Chornomorsk and Yuzhne, and is the country's cargo and passenger shipping hub.

The port is at Odessa Bay's western coast and consists of separate harbors divided by jetties. The port is protected from the open sea by long breakwaters.

  • The passenger terminal (ferry and cruise) is located at Nova jetty and has the 4-star Hotel Odessa-Kempinski as a landmark. Towards the port's middle area is located the shipyard "Ukraina". In port's northern area are its grain and oil terminals. In the port's southern area are located an oil terminal and containership quays.
  • The cargo-logistic terminal was inaugurated in 2005. The facility has a 51,500-m2 storage area, 2 large warehouses (equipped with rack systems and a ramp for 9 vehicles at a time), office complex (30 offices), administration building (housing customs, border patrol squad and other agencies).
  • Seaport's oil and gas terminal is the country's biggest - with 6 berths for tanker ships and total storage capacity 0,671 million m3. The terminal can handle oil tankers with capabilities up to 100,000 tons. Fuel products are transferred to reservoirs through pipelines. The fuel depots have direct access to railways. This terminal also has 2 LNG berths (piers 4 and 7) and an LNG reservoir with capacity 6000 m3. Among the products handled jere are crude oil, fuel oil, diesel oil, oil products, condensed gas.
  • Port Odessa also has a ballast water treatment plant.

Shipyard Ukraina is the port's shiprepair / maintenance facility. During the USSR times (1944-1991) the factory was the main support base of the Soviet Union's Black Sea Shipping Company. The shipyard has a large wharf with capacity to handle vessels with displacement tonnage up to 30,000 tons. The yard's piers tare with otal length 1230 m (4040 ft). The piers' max depth is 7,1 m (23 ft). The shipyard has 6 cranes (lifting capacity 10 to 30 tons), 2 floating cranes (max lifting capacity 100 tons) and 1 fixed (5 tons) crane.

Port's cruise shipping operations were halted in 2017 and restarted in 2019 with the Amera ship ( Phoenix Reisen ). The liner (fka "MS Prinsendam" by Holland America Line ) visited the port on October 30 as part of a 16-day Black Sea cruise from Nice France to Trieste Italy.

For season 2020, Port Odessa had scheduled 11 cruise ship calls by the companies Phoenix Reisen, Fred Olsen , RSSC-Regent , Azamara , Ponant . Newcomer in 2021 is the premium travel brand Crystal Cruises .

Odessa cruise terminal

Odessa cruise port's passenger terminal is Black Sea's largest and located below the Potemkin Steps (downtown). Port's berthing space for cruise ships has length 1370 m (4495 ft) and has docking capacity of 5 cruise liners simultaneously and annual passenger capacity up to 1 million. Traditional way to meet cruise tourists is with live orchestra performances.

Odessa cruise terminal faces the Monument to Duke de Richelieu and Potemkinskaya Stairs (both are city emblems). Wlaking distance to Pryvoz Market is around 10 min. Passenger terminal building is modern and well equipped. Facilities include bars, restaurant, banks, DHL office, travel agencies, ATM machines, public phones, Internet, 24-hour guarded car parking area, concert-exhibition hall, marine gallery, anchor museum, Sea Museum, yacht marina, diving center, St Nicholas Church, Hotel Odessa-Kempinski.

Odessa International Airport is 8 km (5 ml) from the cruise terminal. The city's main railway station is 4 km (2,5 ml) away from the cruise terminal. There are railroad connections to Bratislava, Warsaw, Vienna, Prague, Moscow, Berlin.

Port Odessa has one of Black Sea's largest passenger (ferry and cruise) terminals.

  • The cruise port has 7 berths, allowing it to handle / dock up to 5 vessels at a time.
  • The piers' combined length is approx 1370 m (4500 ft).
  • The cruise piers' depth varies between 9,5-11,5 m (31-38 ft).
  • Here can be berthed cruise vessels with max LOA length of 300 m (980 ft).
  • Primorsky Boulevard: right when you exit Odessa cruise port terminal you are at the Potemkin Steps. If you take them, you will be at the Primorsky Boulevard’s northern end, the best place for starting a city walking tour.
  • Opera and Ballet house: located 5 km from Odessa cruise port. The building dates from 1887 (restored several times) and is in Viennese style. The most famous artists that performed here include Isadora Duncan, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff.
  • Pushkin Museum: located one kilometre and a half from Odessa cruise port terminal. The building is a former hotel. Puskin came here in 1823 after the St. Petersburg’s authorities exiled him.
  • Shopping: the most popular places are the 7-Kilometers Bazaar and the Passazh Shopping Mall. 7-Kilometers Bazaar is among the biggest markets outdoor in the world. Things to consider before going on international cruises from Dubai

Check your seaworthiness.

The most important thing to consider is whether you are prone to seasickness. Try a yacht experience in Dubai first to get a taste of what life on the sea will be like. If you are queasy, avoiding a cruise holiday in Dubai is best.

Pick a Cruise with Activities you Like

Choose your cruise based on what activities you like to do. Some cruises are known for their water sports, some for live entertainment and others for their dining outlets.

Do your research on the cabin space. Some rooms can be tiny, so being claustrophobic will pose a problem.

Adequate Packing is a Must

Pack well. This won’t be similar to a backpacking trip. You might have to follow a dress code for certain events. Make sure you take swimming costumes, formal shoes and clothes, medicines, and other things you may need during the cruise.

Pick an All-Inclusive Package

Choose the all-inclusive cruise package from Dubai if possible. While the more inexpensive options may be tempting, the meals and activities will add up. In most cases, opting for the all-inclusive deal will be the more cost-efficient choice. Remember to check if tips are included in an all-inclusive package as well.

Consider your Budget

Look out for the best cruise deals from Dubai while planning your trip. If you prefer a shorter trip, you can opt for 2 to 3-day cruise packages from Dubai. This would typically cost under AED 1,000. Book in advance for longer cruises from Dubai to the USA and Australia for a better price.

Keep some Snacks and Sunscreen

Boarding can be a long and drawn-out process. So, if you feel peckish, carry a light snack and lather on the sunscreen.

If you are travelling to the city for your cruise trip, consider some hotels close to the Dubai airports for accommodation.

FAQS About Cruises from Dubai

Which cruise liners offer cruises from dubai to europe.

Cunard, Seaborn Cruises and MSC Cruises offer different options. MSC Cruises is one of the most prominent cruise liners that provide cheap cruises from Dubai to Europe and the USA. Visit their official website and pick the package that suits your preferences.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO BOOK A CRUISE FROM DUBAI?

The cruise price depends on several aspects — from the itinerary to the room or suite you’ve picked onboard the ship. A cruise to ports like Muscat, Salalah, or Sharam El Sheikh can cost under USD 2,000 per person. Cruises to Europe and beyond may have a higher price tag.

IS IT CHEAPER TO GO ON A CRUISE FROM DUBAI OR TAKE A FLIGHT?

It depends on several factors, such as the type of vessel, the accommodation type and more. In some cases, taking a cruise might be cheaper than flying to a destination such as Europe if your cruise includes meals and tours.

Now that you know about cruises starting from Dubai, you can easily plan your sea escape. The Dubai Cruise Terminal has all the facilities for guests and fleets.

Wish to try out shorter trips that are not too far from home? The dinner cruises in Dubai  offer the perfect night out. Or try some of the popular dhow cruises from Dubai Marina . Another option is to opt for the yacht cruises that are particularly famous for their splendour and luxury.

Bigger ship, better views: 3 takeaways from Princess Cruises' newest vessel

I was rushing to make my dinner reservation on Princess Cruises’ new ship. But when I arrived at the restaurant, the view made me stop.

From the windows at the sushi eatery Makoto Ocean – part of a sphere-shaped structure near the middle of the vessel – I saw the sun sinking below the horizon, a reddish-orange dot on the Mediterranean Sea. The Sun Princess facilitates scenes like that by design.

“We wanted to make sure that within how we designed the (venues) and placed the furniture, we gave maximum opportunity for our guests to be able to celebrate those outward views,” Denise Saviss, Princess’ vice president of entertainment experience, told USA TODAY. “It is really, really unique to have so much glass on the ship.”

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

That was one of several striking features during a recent sailing (the ship is now cruising the Mediterranean before it moves to the Caribbean in October). Here are three takeaways from the first in the line’s aptly named Sphere Class.

1. The design showcases views at sea and in port

Makoto isn’t the only venue that offers that kind of view.

Other spaces inside the Sphere – which also houses lobby-slash-entertainment venue The Piazza – feature similarly sweeping vistas across decks 7, 8 and 9. I watched the light sparkle on the water while I sipped coffee one morning at International Café, and patrons dining at Alfredo’s Pizzeria can take in the scenery during their meal from many seats.

That’s also true elsewhere on the ship. At Horizons Dining Room, floor-to-ceiling windows face the ship’s wake. At the other end of the vessel, the Dome, a geodesic structure that Princess has said was inspired by the hills of Santorini, is like a massive solarium.

The space – which will also host shows including acrobatics – has multiple tiers of loungers, an indoor-outdoor pool and the Cascade Bar (which comes in handy for cooling off, as it felt a bit muggy in the Dome at one point on a sunny sea day).

The overall effect helped to bring the outside in.

2. The ship is bigger but still intimate

Sun Princess is the largest ship in the Princess fleet, and the 21-deck vessel can accommodate 4,300 guests. But that doesn’t mean everything is huge.

Given the scale of the offerings, a number of spaces on board feel notably intimate. One night, I walked to Good Spirits at Sea, a cocktail bar crafted in partnership with mixologist Rob Floyd that also hosts classes, and thought I was lost before stumbling upon it tucked around a corner on Deck 7. Inside, the 40-person venue offered a laid-back alternative to other more boisterous nightlife options.

On Deck 9, the ship’s buffet-like venue, The Eatery, gives way to narrower hallways toward the aft with backlit wood paneling and benches. At the end, they open back up to reveal specialty restaurants The Catch by Rudi and The Butcher’s Block by Dario (from Princess’ head of culinary arts, Rudi Sodamin, and in partnership with famed butcher Dario Cecchini, respectively).

Even the multi-configuration Princess Arena felt cozier than its near-1,000-guest capacity would suggest. I sat in the second-to-last row of my section for a performance by the vocal group ODY·C and was still close enough to see clearly.

3. The line leans into family-friendly activities

Part of Sun Princess’ expanded footprint has been used to broaden the line’s family offerings.

Park19, a new space on the ship’s top decks, features a variety of activities in an open-air setting. Saviss said the line worked to balance the interests of core customers and a growing family market “and make sure we're prioritizing spaces that everybody can enjoy.”

“There are some attractions that I think naturally, at first blush, people would say, ‘Oh, it's just for kids,’ but actually, the space is really comprehensive,” she said. “Our attractions are available for many different levels of ability and mobility.”

Those include Coastal Climb, an obstacle course that culminates in 360-degree views from The Lookout observation deck (the highest point accessible to guests on the ship, also reachable via elevator) and The Net ropes course.

On Sea Breeze, billed as the first Rollglider on a cruise ship, passengers will glide along the outer edges of the ship on an electric track (the ride will also be ADA-accessible, though Saviss said some mobility is required for maneuvering into the seat).

It’s as close as the ship gets to an amusement park (Princess’ version). “We're not running the rat race, if you will, of like, who can do it bigger, better,” Saviss said. “If you want to just have a really incredible bird's-eye view of Sun Princess, and in and around where the ship is sailing, you can do that. But there is an option to push a little lever while you're riding it and dial up the speed a bit faster, and then it does become a bit more thrilling.”

The ride was not yet available when I was on board, as the line moved through a testing, certification and training process, but is expected to open on April 27. Sun Princess’ original launch was delayed with the cruise line citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard, which pushed back the opening of some onboard amenities.

When is the best time to take a cruise?: We broke it down by region.

There is also a hammock area to chill when guests need a break, a recreational court that can host activities from pingpong to morning meditation, a jogging track and more. Elsewhere on board, guests will find the Firefly Park kids club and hangout spaces Neon Grove and The Underground for tweens and teens, respectively.

United States Cruise Regions

The wild frontier of Alaska has some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in the USA, where you’ll find mile upon mile of jagged, snow-capped mountains and dense forest. On a cruise, you’ll be able to appreciate this wild beauty from both a land and sea perspective. You’ll see glaciers, rocky shorelines, historic gold rush towns, and flower-strewn mountain meadows. Along the way, you can hike, kayak, spot bears, go whale-watching, and feast on fresh salmon.

New England

New England has it all: cosmopolitan cities like Boston, arty seaside towns, windswept coasts, and verdant national parks. Follow the Freedom Trail in Boston, and explore Portland’s seafaring history under Maine’s vast skies. Hike the woodlands and glacier-scoured peaks of glorious Acadia National Park. Whizz up the Space Needle in Seattle and take in the colors and buzz of Pike Place Market. In Los Angeles, browse the designer shops on Rodeo Drive and marvel at the stars’ homes. Browse the shops along Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, and explore the canals by gondola. Take a boat ride through the watery Everglades in search of alligators. Start by reviewing your itinerary.

A man and woman walking arm in arm on a cruise ship.

The best way to figure out what to pack for your trip? Knowing exactly what you’ll be doing each day.

Just because you’ll be spending most of your time on a ship, it doesn’t mean you won’t have to plan. Your cruise’s activity schedule should be square one when you start choosing your suitcase’s contents.

“When packing for a cruise, the first place to start is your cruise itinerary, as it may require specific types of gear or attire,” says Flesher, noting that activities can range from serene walks in quaint towns to adventurous hiking excursions, guided bike tours to shopping days—and everything in between. Also consider time onboard when packing, as most ships schedule special events, formal attire dinners, and themed evenings.

For exploring the ship (and excursions): Veja V-10 Sneakers

Product image of Veja V-10 Sneakers

Available in 13 colorways, these sneakers pair with anything in your suitcase as a comfortable companion for your shore adventures.

While the ship might be home base, your trip will probably include a few on-land adventures. Packing accordingly will help you get the most out of that special time. “For those planning to participate in a range of shore excursions, we advise bringing comfortable, versatile attire that suits a variety of outdoor activities, including shoes for walking and hiking,” says Flesher.

For formal dinners: Jovani Sleeveless Asymmetric Feather-Trim Midi Dress

Product image of Jovani Sleeveless Asymmetric Feather-Trim Midi Dress

This elegant gown is perfect for any formal event aboard thanks to a slimming silhouette with a kicky feather trim.

Whether it’s enjoying a meal in the formal dining room or a night of live classical music and dancing, most cruises will call for a somewhat more formal look than your typical poolside loungewear. This could translate to a nice dress or ball gown, so don’t be afraid to dress to the nines.

For chilly evenings: Lane Bryant Modern Long-Sleeve Open-Front Cardigan

Product image of Lane Bryant Modern Long-Sleeve Open-Front Cardigan

This modern take on a classic cardi staves off the chilly at-sea breezes with its longer length and sweater knit.

Although your destination might be a balmy tropical paradise, it can get downright cold on the open water at night. “Considering changing temperatures, especially at night on deck, is crucial,” says Flesher. “Packing layers will help you comfortably enjoy a destination’s fluctuating temperatures, as well as the breathtaking night skies and crisp air at sea.”

For easy days on board: The Everyday Tank Dress from Bobi

Product image of Everyday Tank Dress from Bobi

The Everyday Tank Dress is the ultimate in comfort and style for relaxing in style anywhere on the ship.

If you’re looking to indulge in wellness and relaxation, packing light, comfortable clothing for spa visits and loungewear for lazy mornings or relaxed evenings is key, according to Flesher.

Product image of Blowfish Malibu Sadie-Sun Sneakers

A pop of color and florals are a fun way to up your lazy morning game.

For poolside lunches: Pítusa Metallic Weave Thobe

Product image of Pítusa Metallic Weave Thobe

The flowing sleeves and chic metallic detailing of this coverup makes it a head-turner, poolside or otherwise.

Product image of Milmo 1813 Tote

This large tote is chic enough to take all of your belongings from lounging on deck to grabbing a cocktail or meal.

Clothes that can do double-duty: Saylor’s Gianna Set

Product image of The Gianna Set from Saylor

This set is not only on-trend with a metallic shine, but gives you the ability to create three outfits.

Cruises aren’t the place for one-trick pony clothing items. “We recommend versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits, reducing the number of items you pack while maximizing outfit options,” suggests Flesher.

For all your souvenirs: An expanding tote bag

Product image of Atacz Voyage Tote Bag Green Stripes

The funky tote expands to carry all your excursion goodies thanks to its unique knit crafted from recycled plastic bottles.

There’s one thing you can count on during an on-shore excursion—you’ll probably return to the ship with a few extra items. Think: Souvenirs, snacks, shells, and much more. But bringing along a useful expandable bag for all your treasures doesn’t have to mean you choose function over fashion.

A ghost pianist and color-changing cocktails: Inside Princess Cruises' hidden magic club

cruises ua

The pianist at a lounge on Princess Cruises’ new ship played the theme song from “Titanic” while guests sipped their cocktails.

It may seem like dark humor, but the musician is a ghost, after all. As the story goes, Isabella lives inside the space entertaining guests (she even takes requests).

In actuality, the instrument – which appeared to play itself – is part of Spellbound by Magic Castle, a new venue on the Sun Princess that combines dinner, drinks and magic. The speakeasy-like space was created in partnership with the Magic Castle , a legendary private club in Los Angeles.

Denise Saviss, the cruise line’s vice president for entertainment experience, said during a recent sailing that the Magic Castle has been a “well-protected secret.”

“As a members-only club, you can only attend by invitation, but they are keen to expand, and a partnership with us was a really great way to do that where we have a ton of international guests who may not ever get over to Hollywood and therefore it's not in reach,” Saviss said.

USA TODAY got a preview of Spellbound during a cruise ahead of its opening next month. Here’s what guests can expect.

What is Spellbound like?

Guests will start the evening with dinner in the Horizons Dining Room, choosing from a menu not found elsewhere on board (our preview did not include the dinner portion). They will then be escorted through an inconspicuous black door off the ship’s Piazza into Spellbound’s small foyer. There, a voice on a speaker tells the story of the Larsen family, who opened the Magic Castle in 1963, for a few minutes.

We were prompted to say the magic words (“Open sesame”), and the fireplace in front of us moved aside to reveal a music room and the Parlor Bar, lined with art and artifacts curated with help from the Magic Castle. A pair of handcuffs used by famed escape artist Harry Houdini even hung on one wall.

Isabella and her companion, a white bird named The Professor, can be seen in a portrait in the music room. She is the cousin of another ghost, Irma, who lives at the Magic Castle in California.

“Irma never loved to travel, but Isabella did,” said Kerry Lovegrove, Princess’ director of entertainment experience. “She traveled probably one too many times across the Atlantic, and then all of a sudden she was lost at sea. So she suddenly found the Sun Princess being built in Monfalcone and thought she’d attach herself onto that ship.”

Isabella disappears from view when she’s ready to play. The Professor, meanwhile, moves over to a nearby birdcage to enjoy the music (I saw him swaying to “My Heart Will Go On” at one point).

Behind the bar, a library holds its own not-so-hidden treasures. I picked up a gold rotary phone and heard someone ask “How can I help?” before changing their mind and hanging up. Guests might also see books float and fall, according to Lovegrove.

Even the drinks appear enchanted. One cocktail I ordered, The Magician, featured butterfly pea tequila that turned from blue to purple as the server poured it into the glass (also containing mezcal, lime, grapefruit, serrano peppers and agave).

Spellbound hosts magic in the bar as well as its 30-seat theater. Before theater seating opened, Mark Gibson kept us glued to his card deck, at one point finding the card a fellow guest chose by cutting the deck with the assistance of a tiny plunger. Woody Aragon also used cards in the theater, including asking an audience member to call someone who wasn’t in the room to pick one. (Spoiler: he named their chosen card correctly.)

The Parlor Bar magician will stay on the ship for a couple of months at a time, and the magician performing in the theater will change every cruise or two, but all are vetted by the Magic Castle team.

When will Spellbound by Magic Castle open?

Spellbound will open April 8 and is now available to book. Guests must be at least 13 to enter and just like at the venue’s Hollywood namesake, there is a mandatory dress code (my invitation called for cocktail attire).

The cruise line also will host its second Magic Castle Conjurer’s Cruise themed sailing on Sun Princess in November.

How much does Spellbound cost?

The experience costs $149 per person, including dinner, entertainment and unlimited drinks.

Spellbound will offer three theater shows a night and can accommodate a total of 90 guests (30 each night). Once they’re in the space, they can stay as long as they like (until it closes for the night). There are dinner seatings at 5, 7 and 9 p.m., and Spellbound is expected to close around midnight, though there is no hard closing time.

Best times to go on a cruise: We broke it down by region

Lovegrove said the venue serves as a new home base for magic, which already proved popular with Princess guests in other spaces on its ships. “If you love magicians, this is the spot for you.”
