Vijay Singh comes from behind for first Champions Tour victory in 5 years at The Ally Challenge

Vijay Singh, PGA Tour Champions, The Ally Challenge

Three-time major champion Vijay Singh came from behind to win The Ally Challenge, his first Champions Tour victory in almost five years.

He carded a 4-under 68 Sunday to finish at 14-under par, one stroke ahead of three-time PGA Tour winner Jeff Maggert.

“It was a long time coming,” Singh said after his victory. “Whenever I tee it up on the Champions Tour, I have a chance to win. I’ve been working really hard... So I’m really happy with this win, and I look forward to the next events. I think my game’s coming around and this was the start of it.”

Singh’s last victory came at the 2018 Charles Schwab Cup Championship at the Phoenix Country Club.

Vijay Singh, PGA Tour Champions, The Ally Challenge

But he won Sunday thanks to a collapse from Paul Goydos, the 36-hole leader at The Ally Challenge.

At the par-3 17th, only 155 yards, Goydos made a costly triple bogey. He held the lead at 15-under but quickly plunged back to 12-under at the penultimate hole.

“I saw [Goydos] hitting it on the fairways,” Singh said of Goydos. “I said okay, back there I still have a chance. Then I looked at the scoreboard, I was [14-under], and Jeff was [13-under], and no Goydos. So I’m surprised what he did there.”

If golf fans recall, Goydos held the 54-hole lead at the 2008 Players Championship. But in that final round, Goydos shot a 2-over 74, which forced a playoff with Sergio Garcia .

Paul Goydos, PGA Tour, The Players Championship

The lone playoff hole happened to be the famous par-3 17th at TPC Sawgrass, where Goydos plunked his shot into the water. Garcia went on to win, which marked the biggest victory of his career before he won the 2017 Masters .

Goydos, meanwhile, never won again on the PGA Tour but did manage to claim five PGA Tour Champions events.

Funny enough, before this week, Singh had five victories on the PGA Tour Champions too. And because Goydos collapsed on the 17th—as he did all those years ago at TPC Sawgrass—Singh was left in the winner’s circle.

Reigning winner of the senior open championship alex cejka and fellow major champs darren clarke, mike weir and john daly join pga tour champions rookie boo weekley at the ally challenge presented by mclaren.

GRAND BLANC, Mich. – Tournament officials announced today that The Ally Challenge presented by McLaren has accepted commitments from the reigning winner of The Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex Alex Cejka, fellow major champions Darren Clarke, Mike Weir and John Daly, and PGA TOUR Champions rookie Boo Weekley to compete at the sixth edition of the official PGA TOUR Champions stop, scheduled for the week of August 21-27 at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc, Mich.

Cejka, 52, grew his collection of senior major titles with his The Senior Open Championship victory last month at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Bridgend, Wales, bringing his PGA TOUR Champions win total to three—all majors. The German’s first two wins came in 2020 at the Regions Tradition, in a playoff over Steve Stricker, and at the 2020 Senior PGA Championship. This will be Cejka’s second start at The Ally Challenge. He finished T28 in 2022. Cejka is currently No. 8 in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, has nine top-10 finishes this season and $4,415,442 in earnings. In addition to his PGA TOUR Champions accomplishments, Cejka earned one victory on the PGA TOUR in 2014 at the Puerto Rico Open.

Clarke , 54, has collected four PGA TOUR Champions wins, including his most recent at The Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex in 2022. Clarke’s first two senior titles came back-to-back at the 2020 TimberTech Championship and 2021 Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. The Northern Irishman has 20 top-10 finishes in his 96 PGA TOUR Champions starts. In his time on the PGA TOUR, Clarke collected three wins, most notably the 2011 Open Championship at Royal St. George’s Golf Club. Clarke, a member of five Ryder Cup teams himself, served as European Captain in 2016. This year will be Clarke’s fourth start at The Ally Challenge, with his best finish being T10 in 2021. Clarke has a 70.33 scoring average at Warwick Hills and $63,450 in tournament earnings.

Daly , a two-time major champion, recorded musician and one of the most recognizable figures in golf, will be making his fifth start at The Ally Challenge presented by McLaren. While on the PGA TOUR, Daly won five times, highlighted by the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 Open Championship. Daly had a breakthrough season in only his second year on PGA TOUR Champions in 2017 with three top-10 finishes and his first senior victory at the Insperity Invitational, the same tournament where he made his debut in May of 2016. The 57-year-old California native’s best Ally Challenge finish was T25 in 2021 and he holds a 70.89 scoring average at Warwick Hills.

Weir , 53, made his PGA TOUR Champions debut in 2020 at The Ally Challenge presented by McLaren, where he finished T27. Since then, Weir has collected one win on PGA TOUR Champions at the 2020 Insperity Invitational, in addition to 10 top-five finishes over his 59 starts. The Canadian has been a member of five Presidents Cup teams, is a member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and, in 2009, received the Order of Canada, his country’s highest civilian honor. In his time on the PGA TOUR, Weir earned eight victories, including the 2001 Masters Tournament. The left-hander had his best Ally Challenge performance in 2021 when he finished T10. Weir holds a 70.11 scoring average at Warwick Hills and has collected $65,285.71 in Ally Challenge earnings.

Weekley , who just turned 50 on July 23, is in the first year of his eligibility on PGA TOUR Champions. The Florida native is set to make his debut this week at the Boeing Classic before making his first appearance at The Ally Challenge later this month. Weekley has three wins in his career on the PGA TOUR, with back-to-back victories at the Verizon Heritage in 2007 and 2008 as well as the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in 2013. Additionally, Weekley has 31 top-10 finishes and $15,167,517 in career earnings since turning pro in 2002.

In other tournament news, powerhouse sister duo Tigirlily Gold will take the stage on Saturday, August 26 to kick off the sixth annual Ally Community Concert. 2024 Mitsubishi Electric Classic final results: Prize money payout, PGA Tour Champions leaderboard, how much each golfer won

T he 2024 Mitsubishi Electric Classic final leaderboard is headed by winner Stephen Ames, who topped the PGA Tour Champions leaderboard this week with a win on the 2024 PGA Tour Champions schedule at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga.

Ames continues dominating on the PGA Tour Champions, winning in the Atlanta area on his birthday on 14-under 202 to beat out last event's winner Paul Broadhurst and Doug Barron by four shots.

Steve Alker and KJ Choi finished tied for fourth place on 9-under total.

Ames won the $300,000 winner's share of the $2,000,000 purse.

Mitsubishi Electric Classic recap notes

Ames wins the eighth PGA Tour Champions title of the year, getting into the winner's circle again on the 50-plus tour.

The money Ames -- and every player in the field -- earned is converted into Charles Schwab Cup points, with every dollar converted into two points during the Charles Schwab Cup playoffs.

Sebastian Söderberg targets Major spot with strong China showing

Sebastian Söderberg admits he has been thinking about the possibility of making his US PGA Championship debut following a flawless opening round of 63 at the Volvo China Open .

The 33-year-old currently leads the Asian Swing Rankings, which concludes here at Hidden Grace Golf Club, and the winner will gain £200,000 in prize money, exemption for the Back 9 events of the DP World Tour campaign and the top three will gain a spot at the US PGA Championship.

Söderberg was a picture of consistency with his irons in Shenzhen as he rolled in nine birdies to join Frenchman Romain Langasque at the top of the leaderboard.

He picked up his first shot of the day at the fourth before dialling in to three feet at the sixth, which sparked a run of five straight birdies.

Anyone in the Top 20 of the Asian Swing can still take the crown with all to play for at the #VolvoChinaOpen ⛳️ — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) April 30, 2024

Söderberg was out of position at the 13th, but a superb chip from the rough salvaged another birdie before hitting an approach to eight feet to move within one of the leader.

He drifted into the rough when trying to find the par-five 17th green in two and despite hitting his approach past the hole and on the fringe, he calmly rolled in his putt to climb to the summit at nine under.

The Swede has made just two Major appearances in his career at the 2016 and 2022 U.S. Open Championship and is edging closer to earning his place at Valhalla Golf Club later this month.

"Really solid off the tee, you have to be pretty good off the tee because trouble lurks everywhere. Put myself in good positions, hit a lot of good wedge shots and scored well on the par fives, so felt solid," the Swede said.

"Patience is something I've worked hard on for 10-15 years. When I'm playing worse, that's one of the first things that takes a beating so I've just tried to stay in the present, one shot at a time. I still hit a few bad shots, just resetting every shot and not taking that into account and been kinda key.

"I guess it would be really nice. It is the first Swing I have been involved in and I'm not really that focused on putting tournaments together like that usually. But obviously it means spots into a Major, then you are paying extra attention to stuff like that. I have to take every shot for what it is and not get ahead of myself.

"Oh yeah for sure I do. Once you are on the course you block that away and take it one shot at a time. But off the course, it's looking quite good right now but at the same time, I don't want to think about it too much. It can be tricky depending where you are."

Who Will Win the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro?

pga champions tour ally challenge payout

The fans may be missing Nelly Korda this week, but it’s doubtful that her fellow competitors are. Fresh off her fifth straight win and second career major championship victory, Korda has decided to take a week off. Even though the No. 1 player in the world will be absent, the field is still terrific at the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro, as 144 competitors are ready to challenge one another for a share of a $3.75 million purse.

Seventeen of the top 25 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings are competing, and the top 65 and ties will play the weekend. The first-place finisher will take home $562,500, which is one of the largest non-major winner’s shares on Tour. Wilshire Country Club has hosted all five previous editions of this event, and the average winning score is 13-under. Wilshire is a classic design and a very tough test. Last year, Hannah Green won with a four-day total of 9-under as the layout played like a true major test.

The weather will be dry and moderately windy this week. Temperatures are forecasted in the mid-70s, and the par-71 layout measuring 6,447 yards will play much like it should. It’s fun to see any Tour compete at a classic venue, and this setting amongst the Hollywood Hills always gives fans tremendous theater. To predict the winner among this betting board, let’s take the traditional approach and look at the last two leaderboards.

The two most impactful strokes-gained categories that correlate to success around Wilshire Country Club are approach play and putting. The top 10 from the 2022 and 2023 leaderboards gained an average of four strokes with their iron game and flat stick. Since classic courses always seem to require great approach play, keep your eye on Minjee Lee, Alison Lee, Megan Khang and Rose Zhang. Minjee Lee won here in 2019 and has earned two more top-seven results at this property.

Putting always helps on greens like those at Wilshire. Classic complexes with putting surfaces averaging 5,000 square feet in size present small targets. This championship course is nestled in a hilly city neighborhood, so when you putt, experience with the breaks and green-reading skills are required. Mao Saigo, Hyo Joo Kim, Sarah Schmelzel and Sei Young Kim lead the field in putting ability. They should have an advantage this week, with Sei Young Kim finishing inside the top six here twice.

The par-71 layout only has three par 5s, and these holes are the key to scoring. Looking at those same two groups of top-10 finishers, each played the par 3s and 4s near par. Surviving those holes will only keep you near the rest of the competitors. To contend, you must take advantage of the par 5s.

Those same 23 athletes who finished in the last two top 10s averaged 4.66 strokes on the 5s. Patty Tavatanakit, Georgia Hall, Xiyu Lin and Charley Hull lead the field in par-5 scoring. In a race to 13- or 14-under, they will have a considerable scoring advantage.

The last characteristic this year’s champion should have is a successful scrambling percentage. Small greens, a layout with 127 bunkers and 13 holes where water comes into play will make players get creative around these tiny targets. The contenders from 2022 and 2023 were successful around the greens 64% of the time, a rate that is well above the Tour average.

In this group, Ayaka Furue, Lin, Khang and Hyo Joo Kim can really score from close range. They will need to because if they don’t hit greens in regulation like Haeran Ryu, Nasa Hataoka and Hull, their short game will be tested. It becomes pretty clear by looking at those past two leaderboards what an awesome exam Wilshire Country Club is. Favor those above who are in fine recent form.

Sei Young Kim has had a sensational spring and Haeran Ryu made a serious run at The Chevron Championship. Who are you picking?

After all, that’s the point. By selecting a couple of names, you create a connection to the action. It’s fun for me to know who’s on my list, so you should definitely write your own. Once you do, the entertainment on Sundays will draw you in like a great Hollywood ending, much like the golf will this week at the JM Eagle LA Championship.
